three thoughts about raven reyes (& 1 thought about Murven endgame)
ONE
I loved Raven Reyes from the millisecond she showed up on screen. I started watching from the very first episode of t100 but I got truly invested once she showed up and that has never changed. She’s so complicated but at the same time her motivations are simple to figure out if you consider her past and what it was like for her to grow up on the Ark. This might get me some shade but I don’t think a lot of fandom understands Raven at all, and that makes me sad (and also angry lbr). She’s one of the most forgiving characters on this show, she wears her heart on her sleeve and you never have to guess where you stand with her. Raven can be tremendously kind and understanding but she can also tear you down and make you feel small if she disagrees with your choices. I happen to think this is one of her strengths. She deserves so much happiness even though she thinks she doesn’t. It’s not even remotely a stretch to say that she may very well be my favorite character of all time. -JENN
A beautiful, iconic genius. I love how from her introduction, there’s no problem she can’t handle or won’t approach. She’s Raven Reyes and she’s a badass with an amazing mind. Yes, she faces challenges, as all these characters face, but she has such a tenacity when it comes to approaching them which I really love. I think it’s been so great to see this character, played by such a great actress, during the years of t100. -RYN
i find she’s often overlooked for how much representation she brings to the show. she’s not necessarily underrated, but just not appreciated enough for how much she can mean to people. raven reyes is a woman in stem, a woman of colour, and a woman with a disability. on top of that, she is so kickass and kind and funny and beautiful and strong - she isn’t reduced to tokenism, she is an integral part of the show. i love raven reyes and lindsey morgan for the comfort and inspiration they give so many people. -ELLE
TWO
Her strength is something that I think is both one of the most powerful and interesting parts of her character. Her season four arc really broke my heart, in the best way since I love pain, but I absolutely loved that she chose to live. That she fought back against every odd and said “screw that” and powered on. She does struggle, yes, she feels pain and experiences loss and everything else that all the characters face, which I think is important, to show that she isn’t unbreakable. She also confronts those struggles by continuing forward though, and doing what she can for herself and her people. -RYN
despite what canon says, i think that she has always been morally gray in her actions. she took extreme actions against grounders in season one. she wanted to turn murphy over to the grounders in season two. she was pretty complacent in the nightblood experiments in season four. she helped with the flame in season five. in season seven, she wants murphy and emori to keep up the prime act. she’s complex and contradictory and realistic and human. -ELLE
For Raven, family is everything and once she counts you as hers, she’s not letting go without a fight. She felt this way about Finn, which I hated at first, but I have come to appreciate their relationship more and respect her feelings for him as her family even after what he did. She’s willing to do anything for her family, including stay behind alone in space, facing likely death like when it meant getting Spacekru back to Earth safely. We see the devastation she takes on when she loses family and how it haunts her and also influences her actions. This outlook is still going strong in s7 when she fights to bring Echo back to herself and throws being a family in Bellamy’s face when she feels that he has betrayed them. I don’t think anything motivates Raven more than family. -JENN
THREE
Thinking about regrets I’ll have that we likely won’t see for Raven, I think it’s particularly traumatic that Finn, Sinclair and Abby all died right in front of her while she could do absolutely nothing about it. All three were her family and I think the helplessness & guilt that she felt regarding their deaths (and to an extent Monty & Harper too, based on what she says after learning of their deaths) really plays a big role on who she has become over the seasons. I wish canon took a deeper look into that but I do think Lindsey does a particularly good job at showing devastated emotions (sob) so at least I got that. I am truly turning myself into a pretzel to cross my entire body that Raven gets her happy ending, but I will add the caveat that it better make sense for her & not be some bs last-minute move that ruins her character either. -JENN
We love color symbolism!! I love Raven’s red jacket and the repeated red symbolism we get for her. Not just because, of course, it ties with Murphy’s symbolism as well (I see you red jacket patch, I see you), but also because I think it shows her character so well. I enjoyed it so much when they brought the jacket, or one like it, back this season, and think it shows how all the character arcs, but specifically hers, are circling back and connecting them to who they were in season one to who they are now. Hopefully, this circling will include satisfying conclusions for her and the others. -RYN
raven reyes is the only one who should be allowed to call murphy a cockroach. with anyone else, it bothers me, but with (the) raven, it’s fine. i think that’s just because of the development they’ve have. it was a title born out of hatred, but it has since evolved into an inside joke for the pair, and it’s even a bit of a mantra. i know a lot of people disliked the “go be a cockroach” line in season seven, but to me i think it was her way of saying (in a high stress situation) “i need you to survive, like you always do” á la season four’s “go. survive” and “that’s what cockroaches do, right?” lines. every cockroach needs a raven. -ELLE
what’s your ideal ending for Murven?
I feel like there’s two viewpoints I’m torn between - what I want to happen vs. what’s appropriate for the story. IMHO the ending for them that’s appropriate for the story is that they die together. It’s a huge part of their dynamic that canon has set up since early s2. If the show does it well, showing that Raven & Murphy actively choose not to leave each other or it’s a scenario where it’s inevitable and they sort of peacefully accept it and perhaps do something heroic at the end, then as sad as I’d be, I’d also probably love it and would completely accept it. And then I’d write reincarnation fic or something, LOL! But what I want to happen - oh well, in that case - I’d like them both to survive and have maybe a hint or two that the option of them being together is there. Personally I don’t need them to be romantic canon in the end if we can at least leave the ending up to interpretation but I would sell my soul for them to kiss onscreen at least once. I don’t care how or why just let me have it!! -jenn
a quiet life in sanctum. i think after all the danger and pain they’ve experienced, they deserve a nice peaceful life. my ideal would be them being together, living in a cute little cottage style house. raven would take over the machine shop, getting to tinker around all day. murphy would work at the bar/kitchen, getting to chat and joke around with people all day. they would come home and talk about their days or hang out with their friends, never without some playful teasing, and then they would fall asleep together - peaceful and happy. -elle
Okay, this is more than simply just sad, but my ideal goal is a final, important moment between them. I have been theorizing and predicting a possible Murphy death since really the season started, and I’m scared to admit I feel like it is heading there. So, while I think it’s gonna break my damn heart, I want Murphy to have a true hero’s death (if he does have to die which I am not down with or excited about but what I feel is indeed coming) and a final important moment with Raven, who I feel with pretty intense certainty will live and (hopefully) lead a very full and happy life. It’s not a perfect ending, or the ending I would’ve written for them, but this is where my ideal meets my acknowledgement of canon meets haha. -ryn
it was an absolute delight to interview these three Murven writers! you can find ryn @animmortalist on Tumblr, or here on AO3. you can find elle @hopskipawayon Tumblr, or here on AO3. you can find jenn @easilydistractedbyfanfic on Tumblr, or here on AO3. all three of them are working with @t100fic-for-blm, request a fic written by them there. <3

5 Shows We're Watching During Quarantine (and 2 We're Looking Forward To)
We’re all home for the foreseeable future, and it seems like everyone is consuming more content than ever before. We end almost every night on the couch with popcorn (and fur babies) in our laps watching something to take our minds off of everything going on right now. It’s been a nice respite and a relaxing way to wind down each day. Here’s what’s keeping us entertained as of late:
War of the Worlds
Source
If you’ve seen the Tom Cruise movie of the same name and are looking for something similar, this is definitely not it. Another retelling of H.G. Wells’ classic novel, this new series is a different and fresh take on a story we’ve all seen before, but it feels so much more humanized; even the machines that are invading earth seem to have a soul and a purpose, though the series keeps you guessing on why exactly they’re here in the first place. Without giving anything away, War of the Worlds is slow, thrilling, and sincere, and it had us hooked from the first episode.
Watch on Epix
Little Fires Everywhere
Source
Peanut butter and jelly. Oatmeal and bananas. Reese & Kerry. Some things just go together and that’s just the way it is, and these two dynamic women starring in the same show is the pairing we never knew we needed. Everything about this series is dramatic, almost to the point of extreme, but that’s kind of the point. It touches on issues of race, single mothers, privilege, sexuality, and really just the struggles of being a parent in general. It gets the point across that you can be a good person, a good parent, and sometimes still make bad decisions. It’s set in the mid to late 90’s, so it has a sense of nostalgia to it and almost makes you long for a simpler time (for some reason we have it in our minds that the 90’s were a simpler time. don’t judge.). Plus, there’s a mystery throughout that we can’t wait to figure out!
Watch on Hulu
Killing Eve
Source
This show is everything. Season 3 just came out and continues the twisting games of life and death between Sandra Oh’s Eve Polastri and Jodi Comer’s Villanelle. It’s been such a welcoming, comforting return to see this show back for another season, especially now when almost nothing feels comforting. From Fleabag producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Killing Eve is about the infatuation between these two very different (but somehow connected) women: Eve, who works for MI6, and Villanelle, an assassin being chased by Eve. But the tides turn and suddenly the chaser becomes the chased, and so begins the back and forth between these two sexy, complicated, and flawed women. It’s hilarious and thrilling and weird and everything you need. Just make sure to watch with a glass of wine and popcorn and you’re set.
Watch on AMC, YouTube TV
Schitt’s Creek
Source
Created by father-son duo Dan & Eugene Levy, this easy-to-watch comedy is one of the funniest shows we’ve ever seen. It’s so absurd and bonkers and absolutely hilarious. Each episode is only 22 minutes, and you don’t necessarily have to watch them in order to enjoy it. Moira, the mom, played by the amazing Catherine O’Hara, might be our favorite TV mom of all time. Here’s a quick synposis to catch you up on the gist of the entire show, via Wikipedia:
“The wealthy Rose family—video store magnate Johnny (Eugene Levy), his wife and former soap opera actress Moira (Catherine O'Hara), and their adult children David and Alexis (Dan Levy and Annie Murphy)—lose their fortune after being defrauded by their business manager. They are forced to rebuild their lives with their sole remaining asset: a small town named Schitt's Creek, which Johnny had bought for David as a joke birthday gift in 1991. The Roses relocate to Schitt's Creek, moving into two adjacent rooms in a run-down motel. As the family adjusts to their new lives, their well-to-do attitudes come into conflict with the more provincial residents of Schitt's Creek, including mayor Roland Schitt (Chris Elliott), his wife Jocelyn (Jenn Robertson), and the motel's manager Stevie Budd (Emily Hampshire).”
Watch on Netflix.
Home Before Dark
Source
An Apple TV+ hidden gem! What originally drew us to this show was the trailer, which featured a small coastal town, a big old house, and an overlying mystery that needed to be solved. What more could you ask for in a show? Based on the real-life story of a 9 year old journalist named Hilde, this fun series at first seems like a children’s show, but after the first episode you’ll realize it’s anything but. After leaving New York City, Hilde (a 9 year old journalist who self-publishes her own newspaper) and her family move back to her father’s hometown to start their lives over after her dad loses his job. Little does she know when she moves there that she will soon be solving a decades-long murder and will stop at nothing to uncover the truth. She’s brave, relentless, and doesn’t care what she risks. A true icon. Definitely worth the watch!
Watch on Apple TV+
PLUS 2 shows we can’t wait for:
Hollywood
Ryan Murphy’s much anticipated Netflix Original series comes out next week and we’re SO EXCITED. Anything Ryan Murphy creates is always so addicting and top-notch, and we’ve been looking forward to this since we first heard about it. The series has a ton of actors you’ll recognize from the Murphy universe like Darren Criss, David Corenswet, and Dylan McDermott, and also prominently features a few gay storylines, so it’s basically a no-brainer to tune in. Here’s the synopsis via Wikipedia:
“The show follows a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in post-World War II Hollywood as they try to make it in Tinseltown — no matter the cost. Each character offers a unique glimpse behind the gilded curtain of Hollywood's Golden Age, spotlighting the unfair systems and biases across race, gender and sexuality that continue to this day. ... Hollywood exposes and examines decades-old power dynamics, and what the entertainment landscape might look like if they had been dismantled.”
Watch on Netflix May 1
Defending Jacob
Another Apple TV+ show! When we first saw the trailer for this a few months ago, we were immediately hooked. Did Jacob do it? Will Chris Evans play a convincing father to a teenager? We had questions, and we wanted more. The miniseries tells the story of a family dealing with the accusations that their 14 year old son is a murderer, so naturally there’s already a mystery surrounding the show and, if this list is any indication, we’re drawn to mysteries that keep us guessing until the end. So excited for this one!
Watch on Apple TV+ April 24
What are you watching? We’d love to add to the list and start a new series to lose ourselves in each night! xx

268 Directors and the end of the blog
This post marks the end of the Ask a Director experiment. I’m so grateful to all who have contributed, supported and engaged with it over the past six and a half years.
This blog was started at a time when I felt incredibly alone in the directing field. I had always been taught that a director operates solo, that it was a lonely career and above all, it was based on scarcity. This was a style of working and living that didn't fit for me. I wanted to talk to other directors about their practice and thoughts about the field, both national and international. This blog was started as a way to connect, to uplift other directors and to create a conversation about the changing field and practices.
It's surpassed all of these goals and brought me more joy than I can name.
I'm now at a moment where my practice and advocacy are taking different and exciting paths and it's time for me to put this site to bed. I remain committed to uplifting other directors, to talking about the practice, to flattening hierarchies, to opening doors for new ways of working, and leading rehearsal rooms, companies, and classrooms away from silos and vacuums. Featuring these 268 different directors was just the beginning.
I encourage you all to hire them (and others), advocate for them (and others) and choose to work in a system that values connection and generosity.

Hollywood Soapbox Interview
The story of how the powerful play A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing came to the Irish Repertory Theatre in Manhattan is a story of how the pandemic has shifted culture and art. During these troubled times, actor Jenn Murray decided that she wanted to develop a one-person theatrical project, and she started looking around for various opportunities. Eventually, she landed on the acclaimed novel by Eimear McBride and its theatrical adaptation by Annie Ryan. That was the beginning of a long journey.
“Basically, it was as a result of the pandemic,” Murray said in a recent phone interview. “The film industry had shut down, and I was sort of frustrated. And I thought I wanted to do something by myself, so I thought about one-woman shows. I found this play, and it had been done six years before. And I hadn’t seen the production, but I knew the piece was amazing. And I read it, and then I emailed the agent of Eimear McBride, who wrote the novel, and pitched essentially for the rights. And they gave them to me, and then I was looking for a director. And a friend of mine had seen Nicola Murphy’s production of Pumpgirl and said it was extraordinary, and I contacted Nicola and took her out for coffee and convinced her to do this.”
Then, Murray kept building the production from the ground up. She found a producer, and the plan was to mount the show in a small theater on the Lower East Side. However, they needed to raise a good deal of money to make that a reality, but luckily Murphy is an associate with the Irish Rep. So she made the connection and pitched the idea to the off-Broadway institution, which is known for presenting work by Irish and Irish-American writers.
“I came in and performed it for them, and they decided that they would produce it, which was fantastic because I had set up a a website to raise $30,000 to produce it myself,” Murray said. “But I didn’t have to do that because the Irish Rep came in and sort of saved the day. That’s the genesis of the project.”
It’s a rare thing for an actor to be the leading creative force that finds the play, the director, the producer and the theater, but this piece spoke to Murray and inspired her to remain dedicated to the project. The show follows a girl from birth until the age of 20. There are hardships involving her family life and strict rules involving her Roman Catholic upbringing. There are also scenes of sexual violence, so the show is recommended for mature audiences. As the director states in a program note, the title character was failed at every turn by people in positions of power. The experience of learning more about this girl, according to Murphy, has been difficult, yet empowering and beautiful.
“To be honest, it has become more and more powerful,” Murray said. “In the beginning, I wanted something to do. I wanted it to be a one-person show so that I could execute it as quickly as possible without needing too many people to rally, and I knew that it was a tour-de-force piece for an actor. And also I had lived in London for eight years and then in Los Angeles for a year. I’ve only lived in New York for two, and one of those years had been the pandemic. And even though I’ve done Harry Potter and Disney and stuff, you still have to find your way into the industry at all times, no matter where you are, so my objective was really to find a piece of material that would showcase what I can do. And then as Nicola and I started working on the material I realized how extraordinary it was — because if it’s not great writing, you can sort of pick it apart very quickly. Whereas this piece I’m still [picking it apart]. I must have done that show 55 times, and I still don’t know the answers.”
Murray, who has appeared in Maleficent, Mistress of Evil and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, credits McBride, the original author, with writing an extraordinary novel, and also Ryan, the playwright who adapted the piece for stage. She was won over by their careful writing of this important story, and she decided to take a gamble and find a way to bring the story once again to the stage. The gamble paid off. A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing has sold out its entire run at the Irish Rep; Murray wasn’t sure if an extension would happen, but she was hopeful. The one-woman show is playing in the smaller W. Scott McLucas Studio Theatre.
“With this piece, it is very difficult material, but to be honest as an actor, I see myself more as the vessel,” she said. “So my objective every night is appreciation that I have the opportunity because there are so many actors I know that are unemployed, and it is never lost on me how fortunate I am to be working and to be doing something that is difficult. And the second thing is to just tell the story. It’s for me to get out of the way, so, yes, I use my mind and my body and my spirit, but it also isn’t about me and how I feel. It’s about her. Because the writing is so rich, I just feel like I become her, and then at the end I leave.”

"Come From Away" show #637
Come From Away is the story of a small town, Gander, taking in thousands of American flight passengers from their diverted landings on September 11, 2001, nearly doubling the town’s population in a matter of hours. As the Canadians step up to feed and shelter the onslaught of Americans during the five-day marathon, connections, friendships, and relationships are formed. Tony-winner Christopher Ashley helmed this amazingly touching production, a musical that is incredibly sensitive at handling the emotions associated with those who remember that tragic day. Irene Sankoff and David Hein have written a script and score that deals with both Gander residents and the American passengers who are thrown into a situation neither groups desired. What comes out of it though is an appreciation for helping people, regardless of gender, sexual preference, race, or any other discriminating trait. Though it may not have been awarded this year’s Tony for Best Musical I assure you this is the best musical currently playing in a Broadway house.
This intermission-less musical has an ensemble cast of twelve incredibly talented performers, flawlessly switching dialects and emotions on a dime as they bounce between Gander residents and Americans. The structure of the book and score embeds the music within the book in such a way that there are seldom moments of true solo/duet turns, but a constant string of storytelling that is simply set to music. This is beautifully handled by Mr. Ashley’s fluid staging and Kelly Devine’s seamless choreography. The cast executes Miss Devine’s pulsating movement with finesse and true storytelling commitment, constantly making eye contact with one another and connecting as a cast rather than just facing the audience and “performing” the number. The cast never loses their connection with one another, a factor that elevates Come From Away to a compelling level most musicals never achieve.
(Company of Come From Away; Photo Credit: Matthew Murphy)
Mr. Ashley’s staging of scene transitions, on-stage costume changes, and location changes ensures that the entire performance is a nonstop roller coaster of emotions, uniquely highlighted and brought forth at various spots on the stage, aided heavily by Howell Binkley’s excellent lighting design. What makes Come From Away such an emotionally responsible musical is that the writers and director tell the audience exactly how to feel at every moment; whether it’s a funny joke, a clever line, or an intimate pause, the audience always knows where they should be emotionally. However, this is achieved through pure seizing of the moment and honesty in the performance. Not once does the script, score, staging, or cast annoyingly or self-righteously beg for your sympathy, applause, or laughs; they earn it, from the powerful opening number “Welcome to the Rock,” through the band’s curtain call number. What makes Come From Away such an emotionally intelligent musical is that each of the recurring characters embodied by the twelve actors have just enough song and scene time for the audience to deeply care about their journey, and look forward to having them come back throughout the production. Finally, the fluidity supporting the cast’s chameleon-like performances is Beowulf Boritt’s fantastic use of the turn table-centered scenic design, which truly marries Mr. Ashely’s and Miss Devine’s staging with the seamless writing of the script and score; all of these tech and creative decisions pay off big time in Come From Away.
(Center: Kendra Kassebaum (picture as Janice), flanked by cast of Come From Away; Photo Credit: Matthew Murphy)
Within the ensemble cast are a myriad of Broadway veterans who have come together to create a beautiful community of people. Kendra Kassebaum makes for an adorable newscaster, Janice, whose first day on the Gander news job is September 11th. Jenn Colella dons the vest as the flirty Annette in Gander and dons the wings and coat as Beverly, the pilot who landed the story’s featured flight. Miss Colella shines in a stirring memory solo, “Me and the Sky,” backed up wonderfully by the rest of the female cast. It’s in this song where she demonstrates how a solo can be performed as a monologue that is simply delivered on pitch; her words exude emotion and paint the picture, she tells the story and shows us the story with her face, gestures, and posture. It’s not just a time for her to shine vocally, but a musical theatre acting lesson in just a brief 11 o’clock number. Chad Kimball provides a loveable turn as Kevin T./Garth, and his baritone twang is a welcomed voice among the collectively strong sounding cast. Joel Hatch delivers a memorable performance as mayor of Gander, Claude, with his strong narrating presence, excellent leadership of “Screech In,” and hospitable demeanor that makes his mayor a standard for all other future mayor roles.
(Down Left: Jenn Colella (pictured as Beverly), Up Right: Cast of Come From Away; Photo Credit: Sara Krulwich)
This is a show where the musicians making up the band are not to be ignored. Ian Eisendrath, Ben Power, Caitlin Warbelow, Alec Berlin, Nate Lueck, Carl Carter, Romano Di Nillo, and Larry Lelli bring the score to exuberant life, and even get their own rightfully-earned times to shine in the Newfoundlander romp, “Screech In,” and with their own curtain call bash after the “Finale.” One comes away from Come From Away emotionally-drained (in a good way) and stunningly impressed at how well the musical honors not just those who lost their lives or lost someone on September 11th, but how well it honors humanity, kindness, and hospitality. This musical is based on an absolutely true event of a true town with real people. Come From Away deserves your attendance and demands your emotional availability, and no, they don’t have to force it by any means.

Chelsea Handler Trolls Trumps With Nordstrom Shopping Bags Outside of White House
Chelsea Handler added a side of snark and political statement to her latest shopping trip.
“A Jew and a Gay went to pick a Muslim up from the airport, headed straight to Nordstrom, and then headed over to @whitehouse to give our thanks!” the comedienne shared in a caption on Instagram alongside a photo of herself with Quinn Murphy, her makeup artist (left), and her driver Omar (right). All of them, posing in front of the White House, are holding grey shopping bags from the retailer that recently dropped Ivanka Trump’s label.
A Jew and a Gay went to pick a Muslim up from the airport, headed straight to Nordstrom, and then headed over to @whitehouse to give our thanks! @POTUS! @quinnmurphy
A photo posted by Chelsea Handler (@chelseahandler) on Feb 9, 2017 at 9:14am PST
The post, shared on Thursday, was met with mixed reactions.
“Love you, Chelsea Handler! Positivity! We are FOR the marginalized. We are not against anyone,” Jenn Ulschak wrote on Facebook. “May every garment in your bag have the sweet feel of justice against your skin. Carry on, sister!” As Denton Melvin shared on Twitter, “The world needs more of this.” Others simply wrote “LOL,” “Love it!” and “LMAO!”
Yet others did not find the humor in her picture.
Multiple commenters called out Handler, a self-proclaimed feminist, for being a hypocrite. “So much for empowering women huh, celebrating Ivanka being dropped… all these celebs are a dime a dozen, pathetic,” Elizabeth Durán shared. “So this is your way of respecting women? Your entire career is based on making fun of others and fowl language. Just saying,” Stacy Renae wrote.
Many also called Handler too “political,” although it should be noted that the New Jersey native openly supported former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton throughout the campaign. She also famously doesn’t have a filter, which applies to her social media pages as well (her topless pic on top of a horse mocking Putin is a prime example).
Last week, Nordstrom announced it was dropping Ivanka Trump products from its website, pointing to “poor sales” as the reason for the changes. The decision followed President Donald Trump’s executive order that banned immigrants from predominantly Muslim countries entering the United States. Although the company released a memo that expressed support for immigrants just days before dropping the Ivanka label, Nordstrom denied any connection.
“They couldn’t handle the political pressure, someone new came in, and there was a change in the attitude toward the brand,” a source told Refinery29.
Trump says his daughter has been treated ‘so unfairly’ by Nordstrom. Oh, was she detained for 19 hours when she tried to enter the store?
— Chelsea Handler (@chelseahandler) February 9, 2017
In support of his daughter, POTUS tweeted on Wednesday, “My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom. She is a great person — always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!” That day, Nordstrom stock rose 4 percent, closing at $44.53, jumping $1.75 per share.
In addition to Chelsea Handler, social media, celebrities, and shoppers have rallied behind Nordstrom.
Since then, other brands have followed suit, including TJMaxx and Marshall’s, which instructed its employees to remove Ivanka Trump merchandise from being featured in stores.

three thoughts about john murphy (& 1 thought about folklore)
ONE
John Murphy… where to start?! I didn’t like him exactly, but I was intrigued by him from early on. His motivations fluctuated and he was hard to pin down initially, but I found him much more interesting than the other male characters so I guess that’s how it started for me. Canon tries to sell Murphy as selfish or uncaring or primarily out for himself, but only in very early s1 do I ever buy this about him. He was making efforts to be helpful & doing good deeds ages ago, so I actually find it pretty frustrating that both canon & some of fandom are now suddenly on the “we’re so proud” of Murphy train. He has matured into a better person, yes, but the seed of that was clearly visible in s1 and it’s one of the reasons I love Murphy because for me at least, the glimpses of who he really was when he let his guard down have always pulled me right in. -JENN
One of the best arcs on the show. Murphy’s grown and changed so much over the course of the show, while also staying true to himself. I think it’s been interesting to him progress, but just as fascinating to see where he stays the same or even regresses at times. I think Murphy really encompasses how good people can be bad sometimes, but learn and overcome and, ultimately, live. -RYN
he is far more fair and pragmatic than people give him credit for. i think a lot of it is him feeling the effects of being expendable. i also don’t believe this is a new development - he wanted to help finn in season two, he helped bellamy in season three, he stole medicine in season four, he stayed behind for raven in season five, he didn’t want to start a war in season six. he’s not a hero or a villain, he’s just a typical complex human. -ELLE
TWO
I’m a big fan of Murphy’s sense of humor, his ability to read people & situations, and how he’s really not much of a grudge holder, all things considered. He doesn’t get enough credit for that. I don’t view him as comic relief for the show though - to me Murphy’s arcs over the seasons have often been deeper and more complex than they first appear to be, and I don’t know that other characters would have come out of them as intact as Murphy has. He doesn’t get enough credit for that either. Yes, he’s a survivor but he’s also had to develop an incredibly thick skin to deal with the things he has been through. So basically what I’m saying is that Murphy deserves the world! -JENN
Morality. I think Murphy perfectly demonstrates the morality of t100. How it changes, ebbs and flows. How it can adapt and become better, but also lose hope and go to extremes when under pressures to survive. Then, even amongst the darkest times, there’s always the lingering feeling of hope and light.  -RYN
john murphy (thanks to richard harmon) elevates every storyline and character he’s involved with. i know i’m biased, but i feel he is criminally underused. he’s often used in the b or even c plots, but he shines so much when he’s with the rest of the mains. part of the reason i love murven so much is that i find murphy and raven so natural and electric together. they have such an easygoing banter, and their development is second to none. i feel like the characters (and actors) can bounce off one another like no other pair. -ELLE
THREE
he is more than just comedic relief or the resident “cockroach” (while i’m here: i viciously hate the cockroach joke as well as the “shut up murphy” shtick). i think a lot of people tend to overlook him, but he is actually such an interesting and compelling character in terms of mental health. i definitely feel like in the modern world, he would be diagnosed with something. that’s why so many of his fans relate to him and see something that maybe a lot of viewers wouldn’t. he’s smart and loyal and kind - but like anyone, has inner struggles. -ELLE
Dad!Murphy rights. This has been living in my mind for a while now, and I am even part of the dad!murphy enthusiasts founded by the amazing @queenemori. We all are passionate about Murphy being a dad, and regardless of our ship of choice, love to talk about it and come up with headcanons and fic that includes the dynamic. -RYN
Now that we’re so close to the end, I do regret that canon likely won’t delve more into Murphy’s ties to Abby (before and after her death) and how he connects her to his own parents. Also his isolation/PTSD in s5 & his reliance on drinking in s6/s7 are pieces I think we’re missing out on too. I think these aspects of who Murphy has grown to be are important to his character, his past and his future. I’m glad that fic writers who love Murphy will tackle topics like these though, because they are stories that deserve to be told. -JENN
what’s your favorite song from folklore?
Probably betty, though I really love august and cardigan as well! There’s just something about betty that really gets me in my feels and it’s such a poignant song. It’s been on repeat for me for a while and I don’t see that changing soon. -ryn
other than all of them? right this minute it’s maybe ‘invisible string’. though again, it’s really all of them. -elle
How dare you ask me something so difficult! Every listen this answer might change but Exile & Mirrorball are consistently in the top 3. -jenn

The cast of Come From Away has a raucously good time on stage and it shows during numbers like “Wherever We Are” and “Screech In.” (Photo by Matthew Murphy)
September 11, 2001, is a day New Yorkers will never forget. We know about the heartbreak and tragedy and we know the stories of people coming together in the aftermath, but there is a story of that day we don’t already know that warms hearts instead of breaking them. Come From Away tells that story magnificently.
When the unthinkable happened in New York City, American flights around the world were grounded. Thirty-eight airliners carrying 7,000 people were diverted to Gander International Airport on the island of Newfoundland in Canada, practically doubling the population of the small surrounding cities. On the grimmest day in anyone’s memory at the time, all anybody wanted to do was help. The townspeople opened their homes to the stranded passengers, welcoming them with open arms, and displaying a breathtaking level of kindness.
It sounds like an anecdote you might read in the newspaper or learn about from a segment of This American Life, but these events are best told from the stage, with music inextricable from the culture of Newfoundland. Celtic influenced song drives the narrative with an infectious rhythm, using instruments not common on Broadway—bodhrán hand drums, fiddles, accordions and an “ugly stick,” a uniquely Newfoundlander instrument fashioned out of household items.

Jenn Colella delivers a soaring ballad that tells the life story of the first female airline captain, Beverley Bass. (Photos by Matthew Murphy)
The locals in Gander dropped everything to help stranded travelers on Sept. 11, 2001.
The diverse cast of Come From Away each portray multiple characters throughout the show.
Love triumphs in Gander.
Kendra Kassebaum plays Janice Mosher, a composite character based on reporters Brian Mosher and Janice Gouldie.
Theatergoers are encouraged to pin their names on a map, for a unique picture of where everyone came from.
With a true ensemble cast, Come From Away captures the spirit of the islanders as well as the emotions of the refugees. Each cast member plays several characters, seamlessly switching identities through simple costume changes and intricate choreography. With 12 actors on stage, plus the band, and no intermission, following along could become overwhelming, but it doesn’t due to the caliber of performers and the attention to detail paid by the creative team.
Some characters were based on real people, while others were composite sketches of folks creators Irene Sankoff and David Hein met during the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in Gander while conducting research for the show. As real-life airline pilot Beverley Bass, the first woman captain at American Airlines, Jenn Colella’s performance of “Me and the Sky” is a standout moment deserving of a standing ovation. However, the show pauses for nothing. Every moment unfolds to reveal a new relationship beginning or a new friendship forming or a commonality being found between the unlikeliest of people.
Among these connections is a thread of social commentary—a gay couple worried about how they’ll be received in an unknown small town, an Egyptian passenger who faces suspicion based only on his race and a young black man incredulous about how nice and trustworthy the locals are. One of the funniest moments in the musical comes when Bob is instructed to gather barbecues from backyards for a big town cookout. He obliges, expecting to be shot, but ends up pleasantly surprised.
Come From Away does not dwell on the devastation of 9/11. It is always present, but there is levity. A lot of it, in fact, because this isn’t the story of September 11th; it’s the story of September 12th, and 13th, and the days after that, when the goodness and generosity of the Newfoundland people shone through a dark time.
The show is truly inspirational. You’ll walk out feeling like a Newfoundlander too.
Come From Away earned seven Tony nominations, including one for best musical. It will certainly give the other nominees a run for their money at the 71st Annual Tony Awards on June 11 on CBS.
The hit musical is at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, 236 West 45th St. For tickets, visit www.comefromaway.com or call Telecharge at 212-239-6200.
Come From Away tells a story of human kindness with uplifting music and great humor. Read Long Island Weekly's review of the hit Broadway musical, nominated for seven Tony Awards. September 11, 2001, is a day New Yorkers will never forget. We know about the heartbreak and tragedy and we know the stories of people coming together in the aftermath, but there is a story of that day we don’t already know that warms hearts instead of breaking them.

Looking Forward // April 2017
I’m mixing things up a bit this month. Normally I only include books which I haven’t read yet and I am excited to read but this month I decided to include all the books I’ve both read and haven’t which are being released this month. I want to get folks excited for books and I want to make sure everyone wants to read too. Basically, I am attempting to spread the love whilst failing epically at talking myself out of spending money.
Geekerella - Ashley Poston Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Retelling, Young Adult Release Date: 4th April 2017 Red Sister – Mark Lawrence Genre: Fantasy Release Date: 6th April 2017
Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.
Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. But when she disappears at midnight, will he ever be able to find her again?
Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom.
It's not until you're broken that you find your sharpest edge.
A brilliant new series from the bestselling author of PRINCE OF THORNS.
"I was born for killing – the gods made me to ruin"

But even the mistresses of sword and shadow don’t truly understand what they have purchased when Nona Grey is brought to their halls as a bloodstained child of eight, falsely accused of murder: guilty of worse.

Beneath a dying sun that shines upon a crumbling empire, Nona Grey must come to terms with her demons and learn to become a deadly assassin if she is to survive…
A brilliant new series from the bestselling author of PRINCE OF THORNS.
Why Am I Excited?
Well, I’ve read it so it’s easy to give reasons why I’m excited for everyone else to get reading but it is one I want to get my own copy of. I mean, it’s a brilliant book and it’s one for all those who have been a part of any fandom ever. Also, I am very much in love with Darien and I’m not normally a fan of celebrities in books.
Why Am I Excited?
I got an ARC of this book in my Illumicrate box and I’ve not started yet but it sounds amazing. I’ve not read anything from Mark Lawrence before so I am a little nervous about it. It looks utterly awesome, though.
Letters to the Lost – Brigid Kemmerer Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult Release Date: 6th April 2017 Alex, Approximately – Jenn Bennett Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult Release Date: 6th April 2017
Juliet Young has always written letters to her mother, a world-traveling photojournalist. Even after her mother’s death, she leaves letters at her grave. It’s the only way Juliet can cope.
Declan Murphy isn’t the sort of guy you want to cross. In the midst of his court-ordered community service at the local cemetery, he’s trying to escape the demons of his past.
When Declan reads a haunting letter left beside a grave, he can't resist writing back. Soon, he’s opening up to a perfect stranger, and their connection is immediate. But neither of them knows that they're not actually strangers. When real life at school interferes with their secret life of letters, Juliet and Declan discover truths that might tear them apart. This emotional, compulsively-readable romance will sweep everyone off their feet.
Bailey “Mink” Rydell has met the boy of her dreams. They share a love of films and talk all day – Alex is perfect. Well, apart from the fact that they’ve never actually met . . . and neither of them knows the other’s real name.
When Bailey moves to sunny California to live with her dad, who happens to live in the same town as Alex, she decides to track him down. But finding someone based on online conversations alone proves harder than Bailey thought, and with her irritating but charismatic (and potentially attractive?) colleague Porter Roth distracting her at every turn, will she ever get to meet the mysterious Alex?
From the author of Night Owls comes a story of summer, first love and hidden identities . . .
Why Am I Excited?
Another book I have read already but had to make sure got a feature because it is an utterly amazing read. I know some people haven’t enjoyed it but I seriously loved this book. I loved the connection between Juliet and Declan and they were utterly adorable and then the book dealt with grief and a complicated relationship between parents and children. I just loved it.
Why Am I Excited?
I have been excited about this book for ages and all I see is rave reviews of this book. I want to read it so bad so I need to get a hold of a copy. I mean Jenn Bennett writes good books anyway but this is a sex positive books which everyone seems to have loved I want to read like last week.
Duels and Deceptions – Cindy Anstey Genre: Historical, Romance, Young Adult Release Date: 11th April 2017 The Upside of Unrequited – Becky Albertalli Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult Release Date: 11th April 2017
Miss Lydia Whitfield, heiress to the family fortune, has her future entirely planned out. She will run the family estate until she marries the man of her late father's choosing, and then she will spend the rest of her days as a devoted wife. Confident in those arrangements, Lydia has tasked her young law clerk, Mr. Robert Newton, to begin drawing up the marriage contracts. Everything is going according to plan.
Until Lydia—and Robert along with her—is kidnapped. Someone is after her fortune and won't hesitate to destroy her reputation to get it. With Robert's help, Lydia strives to keep her family's good name intact and expose whoever is behind the devious plot. But as their investigation delves deeper and their affections for each other grow, Lydia starts to wonder whether her carefully planned future is in fact what she truly wants…
Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love. No matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.
Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly's totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie's new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. If Molly can win him over, she'll get her first kiss and she'll get her twin back.
There's only one problem: Molly's coworker, Reid. He's a chubby Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there's absolutely no way Molly could fall for him.
Right?
Why Am I Excited?
I mean, it’s a historical and a romance and it sounds awesome. I heard about this book last year and I’ve just been counting down to the release ever since. I have enjoyed all the Swoon Reads books I’ve gotten so I don’t doubt I will feel the same about this one. I just need it in my life already.
Why Am I Excited?
Another one I actually have an ARC of but I’ve not read it yet. I am so excited/nervous about this one as I’ve not actually read an Albertalli book before but I heard about this one at the beginning of the year and I wanted to get reading it.
Fireworks – Katie Cotugno Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult Release Date: 11th April 2017 It Happened on Love Street – Lia Riley Genre: Contemporary, Romance Release Date: 25th April 2017
From Katie Cotugno, bestselling author of 99 Days, comes Fireworks—about a girl who is competing with her best friend to become the new pop star of the moment—and all the drama and romance that comes with it—set in Orlando during the late-'90s boy-and-girl-band craze.
It was always meant to be Olivia. She was the talented one, the one who had been training to be a star her whole life. Her best friend, Dana, was the level-headed one, always on the sidelines, cheering her best friend along.
But everything changes when Dana tags along with Olivia to Orlando for the weekend, where superproducer Guy Monroe is holding auditions for a new singing group, and Dana is discovered too. Dana, who’s never sung more than Olivia’s backup. Dana, who wasn’t even looking for fame. Next thing she knows, she and Olivia are training to be pop stars, and Dana is falling for Alex, the earnest, endlessly talented boy who’s destined to be the next big thing.
It should be a dream come true, but as the days of grueling practice and constant competition take their toll, things between Olivia and Dana start to shift . . . and there’s only room at the top for one girl. For Olivia, it’s her chance at her dream. For Dana, it’s a chance to escape a future that seems to be closing in on her. And for these lifelong best friends, it’s the adventure of a lifetime—if they can make it through.
Set in evocative 1990s Orlando, New York Times bestselling author Katie Cotugno’s Fireworks brings to life the complexity of friendship, the excitement of first love, and the feeling of being on the verge of greatness.
The most romantic place she never wanted to be . . .
Pepper Knight moved to Everland, Georgia, as step one in her plan for a successful legal career. But after this big-city gal's plans go awry, going home with her tail between her legs isn't an option. So when the town vet-and her sexy new neighbor-offers Pepper a temporary dog-walking job, she jumps at the chance. No one needs to know that man's best friend is her worst nightmare . . . or that Everland's hot animal whisperer leaves her panting.
The last thing Rhett Valentine wants is to be the center of small-town gossip. After his first love left him at the altar, he's been there, done that. These days, life is simple, just the way he likes it. But sultry southern nights get complicated once sparks fly between him and the knockout next door. When she proposes a sexy, secret fling-all the deliciousness and none of the prying neighbors-it seems too good to be true. And it is. Because Pepper's determined to leave Love Street, and when she goes, she just might take his heart with her . . .
Why Am I Excited?
A book set in the 90s? I am totally down for that. I have enjoyed Cotugno’s past two books, I had issues with them but I enjoyed them and this is the last chance I’m giving her to totally impress me but I am excited. I think it’s the 90s setting, I am a 90s child after all.
Why Am I Excited?
I blame this one on Nick. All of it. She told me about this book on Twitter and then I got myself a review copy! What?!?! I am insanely excited to get reading but I’ve been waiting to read until it’s closer to the release because that’s how I roll. I adore romance and I trust Nick’s opinion absolutely.
And those are my books for April (maybe, if I can get them all anyway). Have you read any of these? Is there one I should read first? And have any missed any books because you know what I need is more books on my TBR?
