Okay so i finally checked a suspicion I’ve had for a while and ive realised i was right. I think a few people have talked about Whizzer dropping the falsetto in Marvin Hits Trina and how it originally helped to sort of compare them/show solidarity (I’ve seen a few different interpretations on this although most of them I think are pretty flimsy). But i think what people miss is that Trina is actually now singing down with Whizzer.
Originally Whizzer sang that bottom line in falsetto, Trina had the top line, both singing at the octave written. In the revival however, they’ve swapped, Trina is singing that bottom line at the octave written but Whizzer has the top line down an octave. Andrew Rannells is talented but an E5 is very high. (I actually think this change might have been made so Stephanie didn’t have to sing it - she mentioned not liking the notes for ‘and still the bastard divorced me’ and took it down for the proshot and that’s E5-F5. Trina was also dropped from the high harmony in this had better come to a stop which is also on an E5. Personally if this is the case then I think this change was the right choice, SJB was a great Trina and no symbolism or meaning is worth putting an actor at risk of vocal damage if they feel they’re pushing their limits)
If this helps to visualise it my computers broken, but i drew the change out (apologies for my scribbly hand-writing). You can see they’re kind of closer in pitch in the revival than the obc for a lot of it.

my favorite stephanie j. block onstage performances and why
1. trina, falsettos
perfect. just perfect in all aspects from steph. no shade at all to rbj, but i am firmly believe that sjb deserved the tony that year. that's a post for another time though because nothing will be more upsetting than the 2017 tonys.
2. judy bernly, 9 to 5
sjb showed her acting, singing, and dancing chops in the best way in this show and it still remains underrated to this day. would've killed to see this live. robbed of a tony nom.
3. the baker's wife, into the woods
what's surprising to me is that i knew she was going to be good with sebastian, but her with brian was actually amazing. a duo i didn't know i needed to see, and their comedic chops were at their peaks together. she justifuckingfied the hell out of those beans.
4. star cher, the cher show
as someone who loves tcs with my life, some parts of the script were written weirdly, but miss block worked her ass off through it and absolutely deserved that tony win. no bias at all in terms of my name LOL
5. elphaba, wicked
deserved to originate the role, and i stand by that. this is the show i loved watching her together with seb in, because i felt like they played off each other better here than in itw. love, love, love her elphie to bits.
reno sweeney, anything goes
special mention goes to stephanie's reno just because she learned that choreo, score, and script at such short notice and killed it in both times she came in for the role, as temp and permanent replacement for sutton. made it her own and absolutely adore her performance for that.
