Robert Doisneau / The Vogue Years

From high-society balls and fashion shoots to portraits of artists and scenes from urban life in France, this handsome volume—which features an open spine binding so that it lays flat to show off the photographs to their best advantage—showcases Doisneau’s best photographs for Vogue Paris. Celebrated photographer Robert Doisneau worked for Vogue from 1949 until 1965, illustrating a postwar France filled with a renewed zest for life. His little-known images of haute couture featured models like Brigitte Bardot and Bettina, who he photographed in the studio and out on the streets. He chronicled the members of the café society in their stately homes and at glamorous costume galas, dancing the night away. Best known for his humanist approach, he masterfully captured scenes from everyday life—from the grace of a wedding procession over a footbridge to the petulance of a child impatient for cake. Doisneau’s photographs captured the spirit of the era and featured celebrities like Karen Blixen, Picasso, Colette, and Jean Cocteau, as well as jazz musicians, movie stars, and humble craftsmen at work. Legendary Vogue editor in chief Edmonde Charles-Roux’s personal homage to the photographer—who was her friend and colleague—offers intimate insight into the man behind the camera, as complex and beautiful as the people and places he immortalized.

Remembering the legendary Utpal Dutt on his 30th death anniversary (19/08/93). A pioneering figure in modern Indian theatre, he founded the "Little Theatre Group" in 1949, which later delved into political and radical theatre. His plays often reflected his Marxist ideologies. Beyond theatre, he graced over 100 Bengali and Hindi films, with iconic roles in movies like 'Bhuvan Shome', 'Agantuk', and 'Gol Maal'. He was honored with the National Film Award for Best Actor in 1970 and received three Filmfare Best Comedian Awards. In 1990, he was bestowed the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for his lifetime contribution to theatre.

Happy birthday to my favorite radio actor, Larry Dobkin (September 16, 1919 – October 28, 2002)!
Character actor Lawrence Dobkin was a frequent supporting player in radio, with hundreds of credits across dozens of different programs. He appeared in over 170 episodes of Gunsmoke, playing all kinds of characters from gunmen to gentlemen. Other shows where he was often heard include Escape; Romance; Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar; The Whistler; Let George Do It; Frontier Gentleman; Fort Laramie; Have Gun, Will Travel; NBC University Theatre; etc.
Larry Dobkin's only leading role in a radio series was the title sleuth in Ellery Queen from February 1947 to April 1948--and even there he wasn't exactly a headliner, because, in keeping with the pseudonymous source material, the show was always coy about identifying the actors who played Ellery. You might recognize him as Lieutenant Matthews on The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, the first of three main Archie Goodwins on The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe, Dave on The Man From Homicide, or Pat McCracken (usually) on Johnny Dollar--and if you ask me, his most memorable and lovable radio character was Louie, the Brooklyn cabbie who sometimes played sidekick to Vincent Price on The Adventures of the Saint.
Dobkin also played numerous roles in film and television and later did writing and directing work for television.
Here are a few of my favorite radio episodes featuring Larry Dobkin:
Ellery Queen 1947-12-04 "Man in the Street": A swindler is murdered before Inspector Queen and Ellery can put him in jail. Whodunit? There were only about ten thousand people with a motive!
The Saint 1950-11-19 "No Hiding Place": The Saint tries to help a young man who has escaped from prison after several attempts on his life. Who framed him, who's out to get him, and why? (Louie isn't in this episode as much as in some others, but the lines he does get include some of my favorite lines ever, and anyway I think it's one of the strongest episodes of the series.)
Escape 1949-07-07 "The Fourth Man": Dobkin narrates this classic story of three "civilized" men adrift on a raft in the tropics, battling thirst and each other while their "savage" pilot calmly sits by.
Richard Diamond, Private Detective 1949-07-09: An escaped convict, bent on revenge against Richard Diamond, kidnaps Diamond's girlfriend.
Philip Marlowe 1950-01-21 "The Bid for Freedom": A woman has escaped from an asylum, and now her husband is in danger of being murdered. Or maybe it's not that simple.
Philip Marlowe 1950-07-28 "The Glass Donkey": Lieutenant Matthews calls to ask about a girl Marlowe used to date--a girl who's just been murdered. It's real personal as Marlowe offers his services to find out why a nice girl had to die.
Philip Marlowe 1951-08-18 "The Young Man's Fancy": There's no murder in this somewhat atypical Philip Marlowe episode by Kathleen Hite. Marlowe goes out for Moscow Mule ingredients, and gets involved in the family troubles of the nice old man from whom he buys his limes.
The Story of Dr. Kildare 1950-10-25: A madman with a gun is holed up inside a school building. Dr. Kildare goes in after him, while Dr. Gillespie scrambles to remotely diagnose a mental illness without ever talking to the patient.
Gunsmoke 1952-06-28 "The Ride Back": This recently rediscovered Gunsmoke episode is almost entirely a radio play for only two voices, as Marshall Dillon brings a twisted killer through hostile Indian country.
Gunsmoke 1952-08-02 "Renegade White": Matt goes after a white man who's been selling guns to Indians, and winds up a prisoner of the Indians himself.
Gunsmoke 1953-02-21 "Meshougah": Matt and Chester find a whole town held hostage by a crazed killer and his gang of outlaws.
Fort Laramie 1956-05-13 "War Correspondent": A smart newspaperman from the East tags along with Captain Quince, hoping to show the folks back home a fair picture of life on the frontier. He's got a lot to learn!
Fort Laramie 1956-06-03 "Don't Kick My Horse": One of Captain Quince's soldiers is a meek little man whose only friend is his horse. He's been in the cavalry ten years, and it's time for a new horse. Dude is not ready to accept this. Tragedy ensues.
Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar 1956-01-09 – 1956-01-13 "The Todd Matter": A tip on an old burglary leads Johnny into a very fresh shooting. Dobkin plays five roles in this story (two of them in close proximity) and what always strikes me is that he doesn't do five radically different voices--he doesn't even change his accent very much! He just acts each character so completely that you're not even inclined to pay attention to the actor.
Have Gun, Will Travel 1958-12-14 "The Outlaw": Paladin makes a deal with a convicted killer who wants to see his newborn son before being hanged.
Suspense 1954-07-27 "Destruction": "And it had a kind of warmth to it, this dying…" A strange, melancholy, poetic script by radio noir greats Fine and Friedkin, about a pathetic little man at the end of his rope.

Famous Five Art Nostalgia #08 – Part 5
Introductory post
Masterpost
🚲🦉🚪 Five Get into Trouble – Le Club des Cinq en péril
Original publication date: 1949 (UK), 1957 (France)
Tumblr media
(Cover by Jean Sidobre, 1979)
Plot summary (adapted from Wikipedia):
Siblings Julian, Dick and Anne are spending the Easter school holidays at Kirrin Cottage with their cousin Georgina and her dog, Timmy. After George's parents, Quentin and Fanny, depart for some scientific conferences, the Five embark on a cycling and camping holiday.
Tumblr media
(Breakfast and holiday planning)
Tumblr media
(Onwards to adventure!)
At a lake, they encounter a boy named Richard Kent, who wants to spend the day cycling with them. He promises to stay at his aunt's house at the end of the day, if his mother gives him permission. The children agree, and Richard joins them without bothering to request parental permission.
Tumblr media
(A gorgeous camping place)
Tumblr media
(Anne has apparently been foisted with a third brother… what’s up with that?? 🤔)
[Please note: Dick’s wet hair lol 🤣]
Tumblr media
(New plans!)
Richard is later chased by a car driven by Rooky, one of his wealthy father's former bodyguards, who was fired because Richard had told tales about him. Rooky's associates chase Richard on foot in Middlecombe Woods, where they mistake Dick for Richard and kidnap him. Richard finds Julian and George, who berate him for his mendacity and cowardice.
Tumblr media
(The Five are intrigued with Richard’s behaviour, who left them quite hurriedly)
Tumblr media
(Alerted by Richard that something is afoot, Timmy, Julian and George hurry back to Dick and Anne, who had been left behind due to a flat tyre while Julian and George went to a nearby farm in search for food)
Tumblr media
(Julian and George find Anne hiding in a tree, from which she witnessed Dick's kidnapping)
The children trace Dick to a large manor house called Owl's Dene. On the way there, Julian observes a man changing clothes and another man throwing clothes down a well.
Tumblr media
(Julian and George study the map to locate Owl’s Dene, the place where the kidnappers brought Dick, according to what Anne was able to overhear)
Tumblr media
(On the way to Owl’s Dene)
Tumblr media
(Just when the children arrive to Owl’s Dene, they see a car coming out of the gate, and they take this opportunity to walk into the grounds)
At Owl's Dene, the children sneak into the house but are caught and imprisoned, while Timmy remains outside.
Tumblr media
(On the grounds…)
Tumblr media
(…and into the house!)
That night, Julian finds Dick locked in an upstairs room and discovers a secret room with a man sleeping in it.
Tumblr media
(Julian uncovers one of the house’s many secrets, namely the mechanism used to open the gate from inside the house)
The next morning, Rooky arrives and sees his associates have kidnapped the wrong boy. The Five and Richard are nearly freed, but Richard is recognised and they are imprisoned on the grounds of the house.
Tumblr media
(Timmy is not fond of Rooky, grrr!!)
Tumblr media
(Freed from the house but trapped on the grounds!)
Tumblr media
(George is happy that her trick with Hunchy worked: after he provided poisoned food for Timmy, George retaliated by outwardly feeding the same food to Hunchy’s chicken – fortunately, neither dog nor chicken were actually poisoned!)
Tumblr media
(Aggie, the house’s cook, is sympathetic to the children’s ply and provides them with a nice picnic basket…)
Tumblr media
(… including a delicious-looking and poison-free bone for Timmy, yay! 🤩)
When one of the gang members leaves in their car, Richard hides in the boot, narrowly escapes being recaptured and then goes to the police.
Tumblr media
(Richard prepares to hide in the villains’ car)
Tumblr media
(Richard’s exit from the boot is somewhat acrobatic, but he manages!)
When the police arrive to Owl's Dene, Julian shows them the secret room, where an escaped convict is hiding along with stolen diamonds.
Tumblr media
(The policemen are rather surprised at Julian’s extensive knowledge of the house’s secrets)
The Five later join Richard for a meal and praise his heroism.
~~~~~~
Thanks for reading!
Marlene Clark (December 19, 1949 – May 18, 2023) was an actress that made her first theatrical appearance in the 1968 movie "For Love of Ivy." Between 1968 and 1971, Clark starred in several films and T.V. shows, such as "Putney Swope" (1969), "The Landlord" (1970), "Marcus Welby, M.D." (1970), and "Bonanza" (1971). In 1972, Clark elevated her acting career by starring in the horror films "Night of the Cobra Woman" and "Beware! The Blob." In addition, Clark appeared in "Slaughter" with Jim Brown. Unfortunately, she and Brown coincidently passed away on the same day (May 18, 2023). Clark's career persisted in horror movies in 1973 by starring in the Bill Gunn film "Ganja & Hess" with Duane Jones. She also had a minor role in "Enter the Dragon" as Roper's assistant. Clark appeared in two horror movies in 1974, which include "The Beat Must Die" and "Black Mamba" and "Lord Shango" in 1975. At this point, no other black actresses appeared in more horror movies than Clark. She starred in T.V. shows in the mid-70s, with "Sanford & Son" as her most notable. She played Janet, who was Lamon't girlfriend, in seasons 5 and 6. Additional movies and T.V. shows Clark appeared in the 70s were "The Richar Pryor Show," "The Baron," and "What Happening!" Finally, during the 1980s, she starred in only a few T.V. shows, with her last acting credit in 1988. Marlene Clark established herself in the horror genre when black actresses did not see a lot of opportunity in that area. She had a beautiful screen presence, and we are thankful for her work. https://www.daarac.ngo Slaughter (1972) https://www.daaracarchive.org/2009/07/slaughter-1972.html Night of the Cobra Woman (1972) https://www.daaracarchive.org/.../night-of-cobra-woman...
