MOAR JEWELS! While waiting for my custom printable for the 50/50 to arrive, I have been working on holiday exchange things. For dolls. Because. So, once again, walk into the land of camera skills that totally rock (*snorts, holding back laughter*). BEHOLD! 1:6th scale shenanigans!
Tumblr media
Click the pictures. They are much better when you can see them in true cinematic horror. Also, they are clearer. (Not really.)
Tumblr media
Yes, yes, I am working on a custom doll. Ignore the sanding marks. It's a WiP... mah doll back and forth. Mah doll back and forth....
Tumblr media
Okay, shakey hands struck again. You get the idea. Most close with S clasps, but some are just wraps. Because.
Tumblr media
Okay. The glaze on that one is still drying. The light was fading! I needed picts! Never mind. Into the 1:4 & 1:3 scale stuff!
Tumblr media
Another. Another!
Tumblr media
I swear it looks much better in person!
Tumblr media
Sometimes I wonder why I try to photo silver against an aluminum foil base for my gown designs. Like a fool. Answer: Hands.
Tumblr media
This one is not so bad, I think. Also, that one above making me think of a Crown of Thorns sort of necklace... or head piece. The Inspiration!
Tumblr media
Magical purkle orb like thing! Bingy blingy bling bling.
Tumblr media
MWAHAHAHA. I really should get the rose gold and copper wire. I wonder if they make it in onyx finish..?

Dolls & Doll-adjacent Things I’ve Been Obsessed with This Month 💖 (plus links!)
1. Antu Dreamlike Teaparty Centaur BJD’s
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve thought about these constantly since they were revealed. They’re just so SWEET 🥹. I have a couple coming in this week, I really hope I get the purple one!
https://www.kikagoods.com/products/antu-dreamlike-tea-party-action-figure-bjd-blind-box-pre-order-in-2023-q1?variant=43787307057386
2. Ddung Clown Doll
Tumblr media
Ddung is a Korean doll line I just learned about! They seem to fall between collector and playline— the bodies are study & the outfits are very detailed and well-constructed. This clown is EVERYTHING
3. Licca Chan Bunny Outfit
Tumblr media
Okay so this is an outfit FOR a doll and not a doll itself, but oh my god look at Licca’s fluffy bunny outfit!! UGH!! Basic Licca dolls can be relatively affordable. Plus, the clothing sets usually fit rainbow high 👀
4. Dorothy Forest Spirit
Tumblr media
These are figures more than dolls, but I just adore these little deer ladies!! I have the one with the green raindrop dress, and I bring her around everywhere to keep me company. Their sitting position makes them so easy to display!
5. Teennar Campus Blindbox BJDs
Tumblr media
They’re fruit themed, they’re fashionable, and they’re SO baby!! There’s also going to be a series of figurines and a set of Sakura-themed recolors for this line!

Some Affordable BJDs and alternatives from my experience
Time for some rambling from me again. I will only list companies whose dolls I own since I can't give much of a recommendation if I don't have a doll.
Guard Love- Resin company with both realistic and cute anime heads. They have variety of bodies and heads available and you're able to mix and match within the size. They also have a good range of resin colors. I think their anime heads are actually quite varied since they have different mouth and eye shapes. Hertz is a very distinct anime sculpt and they also have a head where you can use decals for the faceup instead of of painting it yourself. Their production times are fairly quick, being around 3-4 months. Your doll also comes in a grey duffel bag that you can use to carry other dolls in. Most dolls are under $300 blank.
Fatemoons - Really pushing it as their dolls are just slightly under $300, but you can get some really nice sculpts. They're popular in their home country of China but not so much on English forums, which is likely due to them being a banned company on DOA. This is due to an account issue and not from recasting or counterfeit issues. They also sell a variety of resin parts such as accessories, wings, limbs, and pets. Their current available sculpts are humanoid, but they do occasionally have a more unusual sculpt such as one of their cat heads, Willow. It's my favorite cat head sculpt and I do have one. Their 1/3 dolls are over the $300 budget and some newer 1/4 dolls are also over that.
Jun Planning Ai - This line has long been retired, but these are tiny 1/12 strung ABS dolls. Single jointed. A complete set has a wig, eyes, shoes, a full outfit set, and some have an additional accessory. Their price varies, but they show up all over the place, usually ranging from $50-100 dollars depending on which doll it is. This is actually my first BJD before I even realized what a BJD was since I found an almost complete Nerine [just missing her teddy] at Goodwill for just $3. So keep your eyes open for them in the wild.
Lots of 1/6 dolls from more expensive resin companies are under the $300 mark although shipping is a different story. A lot of companies also have 1/4 dolls under the $300 mark as well. I'm just naming a few companies that have dolls in this price range. I would say that most resin doll aren't even anywhere near even $500. If, and only if, you are collecting in 1/4 and below scale. I don't have a lot of 1/3 and I can't give you good reference for that.
Alternatives
Most of these are well known, but I'll go over them.
TinyFox - Anime styled plastic dolls. They're not vinyl though, and they're mostly called that due to the lack of proper terms to describe their classification. They are primarily known for selling elaborate full sets, or a doll that comes with faceups, wig, eyes, and clothes. No shoes though. They have a rubbery coating on them that stains super easily and is impossible to fix once stained, but I heard the newer ones don't have this coating. Honestly, I wished they never had this coating to begin with seeing how hideous the stains are on my dolls. Their clothes are well made and elaborate and you can buy just clothes once in a blue moon. These dolls are heavy and their joint system is similar to a ball socket. Think obitsu 11s. Almost all of their dolls are under $300, and they come in either 1/4 or 1/6 sizes. They also sell bodies and heads that you can customize yourself. No boy bodies at the moment though.
Imomodoll - Honest to goodness vinyl dolls structure wise like a Dollfie Dream. I have issues with their quality, but they have a bunch of available options that Dollfie Dreams usually don't have available for everyone. Such as tan skin [it's darker than DD too] and male bodies. They have 1/6, 1/4, and 1/3 sizes, and they also have a small strung doll at the 1/12 size. A complete doll from this company varies depending on size. 1/6 dolls are roughly ~$60, 1/4 ~$90, and 1/3 ~$200. Really depends on your dealer. There are a lot of different heads that you can buy and a good range of bodies with more to be released in the future. Imomodoll also has resin dolls, but they're slightly over $300, so they don't really make the list.
Obitsu/Parabox - A cheaper vinyl doll company selling a whole bunch of different sizes and a whole lot of heads. You can either buy parts individually yourself or get a premade set. Most of these dolls fall under the $300 budget range, although whether this holds true or not depends on your currency's exchange rate against JPY. And while some of their larger dolls like the 80 cm Otohime would meet the budget, the shipping costs are high. You can also select a variety of faceups, clothes, wigs, and eyes for your doll. The only issue with this company is the availability of items, with you needing to wait for several months with no idea when an item will be available. Their obitsu 11 bodies are widely available, which leads me into
Obitsuroids - A whole type of dolls that I would argue is even more customizable than the typical BJD doll. So where to even start with obitsuroids? Most are around the 1/12 scale, although it's been creeping up to 1/8 and 1/6 scales as of late. There are a variety of different materials for this doll, ranging from PVC, vinyl, resin, and even rubbery materials somewhat like silicone. These dolls are called obitsuroids due to the original ones being Nendoroid heads on Obitsu 11 bodies, but it's really used as a catch all term for all dolls with Nendoroid styled faceplates and 1/12 bodies. If you want to get into obitsuroids, keep in mind that you will need something called a headback to complete the head. A faceplate is not a complete doll head. If you get Nendoroid hair, this can complete the head, but if you don't, you will need a headback. You also need a neck card to attach your head to the body and not all companies that make bodies for obitsuroid hybridization [oh i can go on a whole tangent, only mini tangent though] comes with a neckcard. Overall, obitsuroids fall well under the $300 mark, but that really depends on what body, faceplates, hair or headback it has. And it can be difficult for some to source parts, although I'm sure there's resources available for this somewhere. I have a ton of obitsuroids and I will probably make a master post for this one day. The 1/12 blind box BJDs are also structurally based on obitsuroids, albeit modified for proprietary purposes.
Azone Pureneemo and Picconeemo - A line of 1/6 and 1/12 fashion dolls, although the Picconeemo lines and female body Pureneemo lines often have more elaborate joints like an Obitsu of a similar size. They're known for their well made clothes, and the cost of the doll is primarily in the clothes over the actual doll itself. Most of these dolls are under $200 new or secondhand, although some dolls can be over that. However, a lot of their dolls have painted eyes and their hair is rooted in, although I think they have unrooted caps available for some dolls.
Dollce Mini Sweets Doll - Cute little 1/12 dolls. Expensive for their scale and size, but you can find some secondhand ones for cheap. Most shouldn't be more than $150, although I have seen a few like that for really no reason. They use Dollce vinyl heads and obitsu 11 bodies.
If you don't mind second hand dolls and have a currency that's strong against the JPY, Mandarake is an excellent Japanese second hand shop, with some dolls even coming with accessories from their previous owners. There is a risk of running into counterfeit dolls, but Mandarake is reputable and I have bought several dolls from them. You can also find a lot of obscure Japanese brands via Mandarake as well and even parts.
There are way more affordable dolls in the marketplace than I listed here or on other lists, but they aren't accessible, or 'region locked' so to say. But keep that in mind.

My New Doll Project - Paradox House 1.0
Around 2005, the last time I was messing around with 1/6 scale (Barbie) dolls, I commissioned a local hobby miniaturist to make me a dollhouse. It has some issues, so it has actually spent the last 10 years as a small bookshelf, stacked on top of a larger bookshelf, holding me and Mal's series of collaged scrapbooks. Since I want a dollhouse to hold the exponentially expanding Led Zeppelin doll project, it is getting a remodel before I commit to commissioning a different one. So, it's a first draft!
If you'd like to see the before pictures, they are below the cut. I tried to make a little photostory out of them but it's not as good as the camper pics.
Tumblr media
This is the wide view of the house. Sun damaged collage from when the house was displayed in a window. One of the major issues of course, is that the door is not the same scale as the windows.
Tumblr media
The whole interior. The interior manages to be both too dark and dominated by overly large windows. Luckily, there a lot of new mini-LED light products on the market now.
Tumblr media
Have a skeptical Tris and Alex for scale. Unfortunately those old HP stickers are covered in several layers of modpodge. The whole outside is getting painted. The lads are both wearing early-1960s Barbie jackets today. Wow are those early Mattel clothes high-quality. Alex may not be giving the red silk boucle jacket back to the Barbies.
Tumblr media
And here we see the problem with this build. Creatable World dolls are shorter than Barbies so they actually fit in here better than the previous inhabitants but it's still tiny. And the interior is dark. And the door looks stupid. But, if I use what I've learned from the Barbie camper and from studying the Tiny House movement, I should be able to come up some kind of interior. First thing, I'm going to repair the door and put up a false wall at the back. Maybe, a fake window on one of the sides. This room will be styled as a kitchenette.
Tumblr media
Center room. This room will be mostly instrument storage/display. If I put 1-2 dolls per room I can display all 4 of the guys in the house and most of the accessories that are specifically theirs.
Tumblr media
Top floor, negotiating with Realtor!Barbie. This room will be a conversation pit-esque sitting room. It has a cathedral ceiling that I never bothered to finish the last time.
I would appreciate thoughts and suggestions. The general plan for now is to do a general repair and repaint of the whole doll house and replace the clear plastic windows with paper insert windows (urban scene on the inside, blinds on the outside). Then I can start working on the fun stuff.

For, not Of.
I really need more Barbie-accessory-makers to start tagging their things with "sixth scale" or "1/6" too - not because I'm snobby and trying to pass my dolls off as ~Action Figures~, but because with the movie out, there's Barbie-themed stuff everywhere.
And I'm trying to find a phone/tablet/laptop for a Barbie, not decorated in the theme of Barbie.
(If anyone has any good recs for UK options, please share!)
For the time being I might just find my good scissors and see what I can do with printables. All these bags I want to crochet and not a thing to put in them.

hi!! i love your art + ocs they are so cool i know you have an art FAQ but i was wondering if u had one for your dollies? i actually have been getting into them recently bc of you :D i was kinda just wondering about like models you have/where you got them from/where you get clothes for them from etc. im more interested in smaller scale ones generally but still if u wanna share anything that would be cool :3 thank you!! p.s. i love the 3d sculpts/prints you do for them its so cool....
thank you!!! i didnt think i'd get anyone into dolls actually lmfao
zephyr doll is an imomodoll 75, with jointed hands from DF-H
rali doll is a wip but she has an obitsu 50 skeleton/shins/feet/arms/hands, angel philia thighs, dollfie dream dynamite hips, and a dollfie dream flat L bust... shes a piece of fuckin work
their heads are sculpted by me with luv... hehe
anywho i usually get my clothes from luts! they carry a lot of nice stuff for zephyr's size (a whopping 2 feet tall...) i havent looked around for much stuff for rali yet. they also make dolls themselves as well
i actually ordered directly from imomodoll's tao bao shop via a proxy (super buy) to get zephyr's doll body which idk. i dont really recommend it's scary as fuck navigating that site. as for rali, i ordered the original obitsu 50 cm from parabox.jp and hybrided/modified the dollfie dream parts (ordered from the volks usa site) onto the skeleton. I got the AP thigh parts from faithz
if you're interested in smaller scale bjds I reccomend 1/6 scale lil guys. they're about 30cm tall usually (around barbie doll height) but typically, from what i know about, have more chibi/child-like proportions!
i've heard good things about tinyfox's 1/6 line and also imomodoll's 1/6 line - they're both vinyl bjds and have an internal skeleton as opposed to a resin bjd which are strung tightly with elastic. also i will say imomodoll and tinyfox have some suprisingly cheapo prices (around 200 iirc???) for their fullsets which include a faceup/wig/clothes/eyes/etc along with the doll itself.
i'm anti recast (which everyone should be btw. dont steal people's art. jesus) so i dont reccommend anyone shop for dolls themselves (like heads/bodies/etc) on aliexpress, temu, ebay or etsy--- they're usually stolen from the artists.
sites i can reccomend for buying legit doll stuff is alice's collection, jane's doll land, clover singing, and i think i've heard good things about stacy's pink ocean but i can't remember lol. those sites i just linked carry all sorts of stuff from official dolls to clothes and accessories to maintenance items.
if you're interested in getting vinyl dolls i recommend starting with an obitsu parabox like i did! they're cheaper than dollfie dreams and if you dont like their head sculpts for their dolls it's mega easy to mod a DD head onto one.
thank you!! ill probs make a doll faq soon so this doesnt get lost.

i got some of the girls of many lands!
everyone was a bit rumpled (the first lineup picture is before I fixed them up a bit) and everyone is missing most of their smaller accessories (if you look closely you can even see that minuk is only wearing one of her shoes and the other is a sock). poor chou spring pearl only came with her pants and one of her shoes, but thankfully she also arrived in isabel’s dress, so she is borrowing it. the only loose pieces I have left over after fixing the girls up are said pants and shoe.
also, all of the stands have aged quite poorly, likely due to sun damage - the plastic parts that hold them in are pretty brittle now, and nearly everyone’s base has yellowed severely.
despite these problems (which just come from getting them secondhand), these dolls are INCREDIBLE. i haven’t read their stories, so i don’t know how those hold up, but from an aesthetic and material quality standpoint the dolls are blowing me out of the water.
Tumblr media
the details on the clothes and faces are stunning, and the fabric they used for the outfits feels really high quality. the accessories are also incredible - all of the metallic jewelry pieces feel cold to the touch, meaning they are at least metal plated, if not fully made of metal. everything about these dolls’ design and execution just blows me away.
if i preferred to collect dolls just to display them, i would absolutely be hunting down the remaining dolls and accessories. however, that’s not really how i collect.
my 18 inch dolls are the focal point of my collection, and i actually purchased these in order to be dolls for my dolls, and add to the ambiance of my dollhouse. however, when they arrived, i realized i had been a bit foolish. i expected these to be only a bit larger than normal AG mini dolls, but they are actually significantly larger.
Tumblr media
mini nellie here is about 6 1/2 inches tall, while cécile is about 9 1/4 inches tall.
the problem here lies of course with my own assumption, rather than the actual dolls. i think that 9ish inches is actually a wonderful height for these dolls - there are many dolls that represent adults (like barbie) that are about 12 inches tall. as a result, these dolls, meant to represent tweens, could potentially fit really well into a doll collection at that scale, while still looking their age and not being mistaken for adults. i think that’s really neat!
however……. that is not the collection i have. for me, they’re a bit too big to be dolls for my dolls (though that is absolutely up to personal taste). i don’t really collect dolls to display in the somewhat more common manner of dolls displayed on stands - my dolls are all displayed in my dollhouse, engaged in various scenes. the only exception to this is the one draculaura doll i own, who lounges around on my bookshelf instead. i think other people’s doll collections displayed on stands are absolutely beautiful, but that’s just not really how I most enjoy my own dolls. even miss draculaura is posed sitting on the edge of a shelf, instead of posed in a stand (and she’ll be getting a friend to hang out with and add to the scene later tonight!). as a result, i am a bit tentative about adding these girls displayed more statically on their stands to my doll room.
for now, i will hang onto these new friends, as they’re just really beautiful and i am simply enjoying staring at them lol. in the future, however, if i find myself spending less time with them, i will sell them to a collector who will continue to give them love.

a terrible new sideline
Tumbling down the old-skool fashion doll slope I somehow ended up here?
These tiny Integrity creatures are like potato chips. There are too many ways to collect. Are you a completionist? Do you like hunting down rarities? Are you a curated theme kind of person? You are? Uh oh.
I will confess right here that (luckily for me) about 75% of what I’ve seen from Fashion Royalty and the other Integrity doll lines does nothing for me. I find it all too pretty, too severely code-compliant. But then, something nutty happens.
Would you like a severe white European lady wearing Bergdorf Goodman, topped with a creepy black lace half-veil? An Indian gentleman in man bun, expedition jacket, and mary janes? How about a Tibetan martial arts guy wearing hakama and a splendid pleather jacket? No? Perhaps an astonishing Mexican trans model in micro-sequins with some of the best bone structure you have ever seen on a doll? Unfortunately, Integrity does all of this. Pricing will seem, not reasonable really, but in comparison to your standard ABJD, ominously within reach. The accessories are clever, the tiny 1/6 scale purses open, the shoes buckle.
And then there’s Kimono Go Go Poppy Parker.
Tumblr media
I love this weird and cool girl with her highly pedigreed outfit, based on Rudi Gernreich’s indescribably peculiar kimono minidress of 1968.

I showed my jewels for dolls to the rest of the Paper Army recently. They liked them, but say that Sorcha is more of a fire and gold kinda girl. I was like... but... mah jewels! Anyway, this happened:
Tumblr media
I promise, they look just as bad IRL. (♫♪♪ Can you see, can you see my Camera Work! - it needs some work, got no skill - Oh my Camera work! ♪♪♫) These are the same leaves I used to make that necklace above, in case you wanted to see unblured photos. Why you come here for decent images, I dunno.
Tumblr media
This one looks enchanted. It's not for Sorcha. Mostly because I made it too small. It fits play scale - Barbie and the type.
Tumblr media
I made a bracelet too.
Tumblr media
Thinking of making earrings for the leaf necklace and all that. Not sure. Thoughts?

Doll ‘scale’ is so unreliable. V0lks yo-sd is generally considered to be 1/6 scale, portrayed as a toddler/very young child. So far, so good, she looks cute with other V0lks dolls too. 26.5cm x 6 = 159cm so converted to inches = 62. Toddler. 5 ft 2 inches. Wat? And no, I’m not nit-picking, I was just was baffled why Barbie kitchen furniture just looked so ‘off’ with my friend’s yo. Accessories? All cute! But put this girl in a Barbie house kitchen and she just looks so weirdly large!

What if I did my doll parts destash as a blind junk box.... I think I could handle the whole ordeal if I had everything pre-packaged and ready to slap postage and labels onto...
Main downside is the flat rate priority boxes I have are even more expensive to ship these days. =_= And I'd probably make way less than I would if I individually photographed and listed each item separately... but I kinda just want them out of here at this point. :/
Let's poll it actually.
