2009 The year the world Changed
The year 2009 was marked by several remarkable and unexplained phenomena that captured the attention and imagination of people around the world. From the sky to the ground, from the past to the present, these events challenged our perception of reality and raised questions about the nature of the universe we live in. Here are some of the most notable examples of these strange events:
Tumblr media

The Norway Spiral
On the night of December 9, 2009, a spectacular spiral of light appeared in the sky over Norway and Sweden (see above), lasting for about 10 minutes. The spiral consisted of a blue beam of light with a greyish spiral emanating from one end of it. It was visible from hundreds of kilometers away and was witnessed by thousands of people. Some thought it was a UFO, a wormhole, or a sign of the end times. 1
Russian claimed it was a Bulava missile, which malfunctioned and spun out of control, creating the spiral effect. However, some experts and observers rejected this explanation, pointing out the lack of evidence and the unusual features of the phenomenon. 2

The Blood Red Rain of Kerala
Between July and September 2009, several episodes of red-colored rain fell sporadically on the southern Indian state of Kerala, staining clothes and surfaces with a pinkish hue. The rain also had a yellow, green, or black tint at times. 3
As you can image people called it the end of days we clothing especially stained. The inital explanation was that the rain was colored by airborne spores from green algae. However, some researchers pointed out that the spores had unusual properties and could not be identified as any known terrestrial organism. To this day the real reason is unknown. 4

The Mandela Effect
Also In 2009, Fiona Broome, a paranormal consultant, launched a website to document her observation of a phenomenon she called the "Mandela Effect". She noticed that she and many others shared a false memory of former South African president Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s, when he actually died in 2013. She also found other examples of collective false memories, such as the spelling of the brand name Oscar Mayer, the line “Luke, I am your father” from Star Wars, and the painting of Henry VIII holding a turkey leg. 5
Broome proposed that these false memories were not mistakes, but evidence of parallel realities and alternate timelines. She suggested that some people had somehow shifted from one reality to another, or that the realities had merged or overlapped. She also speculated that the phenomenon was related to quantum physics and the Many-Worlds Interpretation. 6
Tumblr media
The Asperatus Cloud
We all take clouds for granted; we see them every day and are used to the patterns of the sky. They are like old friends that, over the years, we come to recognize. But in 2009, a new cloud occurred for the first time. The Cloud Appreciation Society, a group of enthusiasts who admire and study clouds, proposed a new classification of cloud to the official system. The cloud formation, named asperatus (meaning roughened or agitated), was characterized by a dark and turbulent appearance, with undulating waves and ripples.
These days they have become common and have been seen around the world. 8
A Coincidence or a Connection?
What is remarkable about these events is that they all occurred in the same year, 2009, which was also the first year that the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, began operating after a failure in 2008. The LHC, located near Geneva, Switzerland, was designed to recreate the conditions of the Big Bang and to test various theories of particle physics. On December 8, 2009, the LHC achieved a world record by colliding particles at an energy of 2.36 trillion electron volts, surpassing the previous records. 9
Could there be a connection between the LHC and the strange events of 2009? Some people have speculated that the LHC could have opened a portal to another dimension, altered the fabric of space-time, or created a mini black hole that swallowed our reality and replaced it with another one. These ideas are mostly based on wild imagination and conspiracy theories, and have no scientific basis or evidence. However, they do reflect the curiosity and wonder that these events have inspired in us, and the possibility that there is more to the universe than we know.
However don't take my word for it, I have included links so that you can conduct your own research. 10

Duolingo x reader x Scrub Daddy
Tumblr media
Duo gritted his beak and hooted in a low undertone, “Have you done your lesson for the day?” The green owl pressed its large hulking body against your frail, quivering form, cornering you.
You blushed scarlet at the contact. “N-n-not yet, Duo-sama. I will though.”
“I can’t let you leave yet then, watashi no koibito*,” Duo whispered, kabe-donning you against the wall with a single powerful wing. “Now be a good girl and tell me how do you count to 10 in japanese.”
“Ichi-” you began, but then Duo flipped you over, pulling your hips back, and delivering a firm slap to your naked ass cheeks. The sound rang out in your ears, and you let out a short yelp of surprise. Warmth bloomed in both your cheeks. “Keep going, mi amor*.”
You bit your lip but despite yourself, you continued counting eager to feel the owl’s punishment. “Now you’ll never forget your lesson, and we can be together forever,” Duo hooted joyfully as he spanked you.
“Y-yes, Duo-sama,” you moaned your reply.
Duo lifted up his wing, ready to smack your bubbly, voluptuous ass once more. Your phone rang and buzzed violently making you open your eyes and peer over. Duo’s eyes followed yours, Daddy scrubby wubby, it read.
Duo whispered quietly into your ear with his hot breath going down your neck, “Daddy.. Scrubby.. Wubby.. wer ist das*?”
Your glistening eyes looked into Duo’s large, black orbs, “I-I already told you Duo-sama, he’s just my bestie. It’s Scrub Daddy.” Duo let out an inhuman screech, “SKREEEEE SCRUB DADDYY, WHY WOULD YOU BETRAY ME LIKE THIS, CINTA SAYA*.”
“I’m sorry Duo, I didn’t mean to, he’s just a friend,” you pleaded.
Duo looked at you, hurt and confusion marring his handsome features. “If you mean it, apologize to me in Japanese.”
“Sorry-desu?”
You saw tears flood Duo’s face and in a flash he had flown out of the window, leaving you screaming his name, begging him to return. But Duo would not hear it. You collapsed to your knees, burying your head in the carpet floor, as you peered at your phone once again as it suddenly blared to life.
Ass up in the air, you picked up the phone, sniffling, “D-daddy. Why’d you call? You know I’m with Duo.” Scrub Daddy was silent for a few moments before replying in his deep, sexy Nelson Mandela like voice, “Why are you crying y/n? Did Duo hurt you? I’m coming over.”
Before you could tell him it’s nothing to worry about, the line cut. Expecting company, you put on hot pink booty shorts and fixed your hair. After getting yourself ready, you opened your Duolingo app staring at the messages between you and your feathered lover. Should you text him? You wondered.
Your thoughts were interrupted as you heard the screeching of tires outside your apartment building. Running over to your window sill, you saw Scrub Daddy lock his car in the parking lot and walk into your building. You heard loud thunderous footsteps make their way to your apartment’s door. The jangling of the spare keys you gave to Scrub Daddy rattled inside your tiny, throbbing keyhole.
You ran to the door, with a hint of excitement, and relief of company. The door swung wide open revealing the massive yellow unit of a man and his beautiful smile.
“Daddy! You didn’t have to come all this way just for me..” you exclaimed with tears running down your face but with a smile lighting you up regardless.
Scrub daddy’s face scrunched into a concerned expression “Oh deary me, look at your state,” he whispered before bringing you into a hug. You felt yourself getting absorbed into the soft yellow foam, your body disappeared as the tears from your face went into the many small pores of Scrub Daddy.
“Better?” Scrub Daddy whispered in a soothing, comforting tone. You closed your eyes tighter, the last bits of your fluids flowing into his tight holes. As Scrub Daddy pulled away he was wet, but had an ever present smile on his face.
Scrub guided you to the edge of your bed “Have a seat, will you?” You calmly obeyed. “What happened?” he began questioning. You looked at him worriedly, “I don’t know. Me and Duo were just having some fun and all of a sudden he got angry at me..”
Shifting around on the bed Scrub Daddy asked “What do you mean? Having fun?…Was he wild?” You looked up at the ceiling and put a hand on your chin as you thought of how to phrase it, “Oh you know, owls are wild animals too. He likes dominating me and sometimes loses control of his feathers. Today he spanked me for not keeping up my Japanese streak,” you blushed but Scrubby was your best friend, you told him everything.
Scrub Daddy gasped and grabbed a pillow on your bed, putting it over his lap. He softly asked, “W-What else… Does he do?”
“Oh you know, normal couple stuff. Like whenever we go to dinner I chew his food and he eats it from my mouth.” Thinking about the sweet moments between you and Duo made sorrow fill your heart again. “I think he’s mad at me? Oh Scrubby what can I do now?” You threw yourself onto his soft spongy body and sobbed.
Both you and Scrub Daddy jumped as you heard the door creak open. A gigantic green owl stood there ominously observing the scene with an inscrutable expression.
“Duo, you came back!” You exclaimed, rising to your feet. “This-,” you gestured to yourself and Scrub, “This isn’t what it looks like, he was just comforting me.” Duo bowed his head, his eyes glistening with tears once more. “I can learn all the languages in the world but I guess I never learn when it comes to matters of the heart,” Duo muttered. Before he would let his tears fall, he turned his face away from you 180 degrees and wept.
Your heart squeezed in sympathy as you stepped towards him. Beside you, Scrub Daddy rose to his feet. Putting a hand on your shoulder, he stopped you and shook his head. You glanced up into his joyful baby blues which were now fixed on your favourite green owl.
Scrub Daddy approached Duo tenderly, gently stroking his feathers before pulling the weeping owl into a loving embrace. “You don’t have to learn anything, Duo. You’re perfect the way you are,” Scrub Daddy whispered in a husky baritone. “I wish you could see yourself the way I see you.” Duo slowly turned his head back 180 degrees. “Really?” Scrub Daddy simply smiled, gently scrubbing the tears from Duo’s face. “You’re perfect the way you are.”
Duo’s eyes widened looking Scrub Daddy, he was twinkling against the light, the tears he had soaked up made him sparkle, as if he had the skin of a killer, Bella. Scrub Daddy had droplets dripping from what you would call his forehead to between his hypothetical crotch.
Unaware of his sexual appeal Scrub looked at you and Duo confused as you two were lost in a trance. Duo felt a warm feeling rise from his depths as he used one clean sweep of his wing and pulled Scrub Daddy closer by the waist into a deep kiss. Duo inserted his beak deep into Scrub’s mouth hole, using his tongue to explore every pore possible, soaking Scrub up more with his saliva.
Scrub moaned at the gesture, feeling a tingle pass through his body. They both had seemingly forgotten about you, as you stood there at a loss of words. As Scrub and Duo pulled apart they saw you standing flabbergasted, Duo smiled as he extended his free wing, beckoning you into a hug with Scrub and himself. You bolted towards the two giving yourself entirely to them.
In a moment of heat all 3 of you strip down to nothing, as Scrub lays down on the bed, and you on top of his soft, squishy body. You could feel every pore, rub against your skin. It was slightly wet from before and a little rough textured, stimulating your body further. Duo got on top of you two, dominating and completing the sandwich.
He plucked the feathers at his crotch region revealing a marvellous featherless cock, Scrub Daddy let out a moan as you bit your lower lip. Duo had a task in front of him, two souls to pleasure. He began with pumping Scrub Daddy’s tightest hole, which was conveniently placed right beneath your spread out legs. One pump in Scrub and one in your hole, Duo chirped in pleasure, “Ah, kak*”.
Placing his beak in your mouth when he had his thick cock inside Scrub and vice versa, Daddy could feel his pores contract. Scrub Daddy was contracting before the big release, as Duo picked up speed you could hear the bird above you breathe faster. You could feel Duo's cock go in and out rhythmically bringing you to an orgasm as you rolled your head back pushing into the soft cushion provided by Scrub Daddy beneath you.
One final round of pumping and all three of you sighed in relief as Duo pulled out to release his seed all over Scrub and you. Scrub moaned in pleasure absorbing Duo’s cum feeling it drip through its many holes as your body relaxed after a big orgasm. The three of you collapsed by each other's side, chuckling at the events of the evening and basking in each other's company.

Week 9 - Forrest Gump and Inception Two-Film Comparison Essay
Carly Leavitt-Hullana
Tumblr media
The two movies I chose to watch for weeks eight and nine were Forrest Gump directed by Robert Zemeckis and Inception directed by Christopher Nolan. Both of which have many similarities and differences within their critical acclimation and conventional/unconventional attributes, which are separately discussed below along with a major historical event that occurred during the year in which each film was released.
Tumblr media
Starting with Forrest Gump, a popular fan favorite, the film follows the lucky but tough life of Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), who grew up in a boarding house with his single mother, as his father had left them when he was very young. As many may already know, Forrest was diagnosed with scoliosis which affected his ability to walk as well as was mentally challenged which affected his life greatly in many ways that we experience throughout the film. However, throughout his event-filled life he always kept in mind what his mother had instilled into him, that “stupid is as stupid does,” and that Forrest is just as normal as any other person. He also had the support of his lifelong best friend and wife, Jenny, with whom he lost touch and rekindled his relationship with multiple times throughout the span of their lives.
youtube
This scene shows how much Jenny cared about Forrest from the time he started school to the time they got into high school.
Although I cannot speak for the global audience, I know that Forrest Gump is a fan and family favorite among America in today’s society as well as when it came out in 1994. This film is notoriously known for many quotable lines as well as Tom Hanks' exceptional and award winning, (for both Hanks himself and the film) performance. I, as well as many other acclaimed film critics, consider Forrest Gump an American classic as many have seen and greatly loved this movie. Those in the audience were inspired by Forrest Gump's life story and his ability to get up and keep going despite all of his hardships that he had encountered throughout his life.
However, a more indepth look into Forrest Gump reveals more complexity of the film and the director's message. Critically acclaimed film critic Roger Ebert skims the surface when he says, “And yet this is not a heartwarming story about a mentally challenged man. That cubbyhole is much too small and limiting for Forrest Gump. The movie is more of a meditation on our times, as seen through the eyes of a man who lacks cynicism and takes things for exactly what they are” (Forrest Gump via Roger Ebert). An academic article, written by Yunling Zhang, takes it a step further when he states, “It analyzes the plots related to social, political and cultural context and discusses main themes reflected in the work, namely anti-war ideas, anti-racism and the realization American dream” (A New Historicist Interpretation of Forrest Gump via Universe Scientific Publishing).
Tumblr media
Taking Forrest Gump’s political and social commentary into consideration around the time of its release in 1994, we see similar events that relate to the film’s emphasis of a changing society with Nelson Mandela’s inauguration. An article describes this major event in South African history, “On 10 May 1994, Nelson Mandela, at the age of 77, was inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president and F W de Klerk became Mandela’s first deputy. Although the ANC gained a majority vote, they formed the Government of National Unity (GNU), headed by Mandela” (Nelson Mandela is inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president via South African History Online).
Tumblr media
Despite these three main historic events being a large part of American history, they were highly controversial which leads to the conventionalism of Forrest Gump. I argue that it is both conventional and unconventional, as it has many conventional aspects such as: starring already famous, big name actor Tom Hanks; it quickly became a fan favorite for a large population; and it regards many, high critical acclimations for the American comedy-drama. On the other hand, it also contains multiple unconventional aspects of: showcasing the perspective of a mentally challenged man; adding many controversial and/or devastating moments in politics and society; inadvertently displaying the majority feelings of society during those times; ‘promoting’ bullying; and ‘advertising’ a relationship between Jenny and Forrest that greatly goes against societal norms.
Tumblr media
Moving into Inception, this film takes you through the impossible job of mind inception, hence the title of the film, which is the act of planting the seed of an idea into someone's mind to allow it to grow until it is all they can think about. Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), a thief with the ability to enter people’s dreams, leads this assignment as they work with their employer to get the company’s rival to dismantle their business. As they scheme up a plan and finally begin, Cobb fails to mention his own compromises he may expose to the mission and how dangerous it is. As well as how easily it can go south as they are working under a sedative to go into a dream, within a dream, within a dream.
Tumblr media
I greatly enjoyed watching Inception as it is a great action-packed, suspenseful film that truly does keep you on the edge-of your seat guessing. However, it is not the best film I have seen and can agree with film critic Peter Bradshaw when he says, “Well, Inception is still very impressive; looking back, I see that I found its tech and technique dazzling, but the narrative inert. Yet maybe that was not doing justice to how staggering its fantasy set pieces were” (Inception review – the virtual reinvention of virtual reality via The Guardian). Even so, further in his article he applauds Nolan on the uniqueness of this film as well as the brilliant creation of the dream scenes throughout the film, where I also argue Nolan’s focus of the film was prioritized.
youtube
This scene shows off some of the great visuals and tech that the movie has, especially during the dream scenes.
With that being said, I claim that Inception is unconventional despite having a few conventional aspects. The few main conventional aspects are the use of multiple big name actors such as Leonardo Dicaprio, Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, and Elliot Page (formerly Ellen Page); the film’s distribution by Warner Bros; and the plot following a normal action film. Regardless, this film is unconventional as it poses a unique and confusing idea of building, entering, and controlling a or another's dream, has a very subjective and perplexing ending and plot overall, and adds commentary to the corruption of business politics commonly heard about big name corporations.
With Inception’s release in July of 2010, it adds commentary to the state of not only America’s government and social corruption, but of those issues shared globally as well. We see an example of the effects of a corrupted society and government with the 2010 Haiti earthquake of a magnitude of 7.0, that greatly devastated the country and world’s population. An article comments, “Haiti's capital city, Port-au-Prince, was almost completely flattened in the space of 35 seconds. The loss of government buildings and staff in the quake meant the country's ability to manage the response was severely weakened. Even today, issues such as lack of infrastructure, limited access to basic resources and weak political governance still plague the country” (Britannica & Sky News on 2010 Haiti Earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0).
Tumblr media
In conclusion, Forrest Gump and Inception are similar in ways that they both regard high critical receptions, both add to the commentary of societal and governmental views/issues during certain timelines, they both share aspects of being both conventional and unconventional films, and they share connections with historic events that occurred during the years that both films were released. On the other hand, these films are different as they came out in different eras, showcase different aspects of societal views during those times, and are completely different genres and concepts.

Wednesday 10th April 2024
Wednesday dawned with strong sunshine in the east and blue skies pushing across the vista from our apartment windows.
We had pre-booked a tour to Robben Island; a boat trip of some 11km taking 30 minutes. The girl at the ferry terminal yesterday wagged her finger at us and told us to be there by 10.30 for the 11am ferry or else. So it all relied upon Ivan the taxi turning up at our apartment at 10am as promised. Fat chance of that happening. Well he romped in at 10.15; very pleasant, but announced that we had to make a small detour to pick up some Americans somewhere downtown. We crossed the finish line at 10.45, so not too late I suppose. Ivan was unrepentant and accepted his tip with grace.
The actual trip was conducted at a pace completely outside of Ivan's understanding. The ferry docked on the Robben Island quayside and we were instructed to board buses in order to fulfil phase 1 of the prison tour. A small black child in the row in front of us on the crowded single deck bus wept, I don't want to go to prison! The old rickety bus clattered around the site and our cheery guide pointed out the little house where Robert Sobukwe lived for 6 years in silent solitary confinement with 4 guards outside and 2 inside with him. The bus slowed but did not stop; we were on a schedule. Next to Sobukwe's house were high risk political prisoner cells. We did not dwell. The bus carried on and pulled into a parking area with toilets and souvenirs. Despite the 13 minute queue for the toilets we were allowed 10 minutes before instructed to reboard for phase 2 of the tour; the main prison block. Once more the small child pleaded that he didn't want to go to prison.
Phase 2 was the thing. This time we were out and about, loose but with our guide, an ex political prisoner. We were lead through the virtual system that was in place from 1962 including being admitted, stripped, assessed, categorised, uniformed and assigned a cell; single, isolation or communal. The whole process designed to dehumanise and humiliate. The regime did all it could to make life hard or nigh on impossible for the prisoners; severe punishment, hard toil, restrictive communication and family visits and no parole. The prison complex is now a UNESCO world heritage site and the intention is to maintain its integrity and authenticity. Curiously although Nelson Mandela is mentioned a lot, the whole museum does not revolve around his story. Moreover, his cell was not even labelled; just the one with the red bucket. The reason given was that all prisoners were there because of political persecution and he would not be singled out as being more important than anyone else. We came away subdued but very much in awe of what these people were prepared to suffer for their cause. He might have had a long walk to freedom, but we had an exceedingly choppy sea to contend with on our return to Cape Town. Sick bags were provided!
We had hoped we could catch a cable car up Table Mountain after this adventure. The weather had improved enormously during the day, and there was only one cloud in the sky. Sadly this was over Table Mountain! It's closed the lady said. Come back tomorrow she said.
Instead we repaired to a nice bar on the waterfront where we could sup local beer in the sunshine whilst watching various street entertainers. Our closest artiste appeared to have been given a gold lame Darth Vader outfit for Christmas from his mum and the success of his act relied entirely upon twirling battons majorette style. It might have worked if he could stop dropping them. Still, it was entertaining.
Home after all that excitement to chicken and SB.

Examples of the Mandela Effect
Ever remembered seemingly minute details of one thing, but reality shows you that detail was entirely different? Some suggest we have jumped into an alternate reality and the things we remember were from the reality we left behind. That’s called the Mandela Effect.
The namesake: This phenomenon was named after Dr. Nelson Mandela, whom many of the older generation could distinctly remember dying in prison in the 1980s. Actually, he died only 10 years ago!
Often misquoted movie lines: I’ll give a few in the same entry, since I could make a list on its own of those alone. In undeniably the greatest plot twist in all of cinema, when Luke faces Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back, Vader reveals to the young Skywalker that instead of killing the boy’s father as old Obi-Wan Kenobi had told him, Vader IS, in fact, young Luke’s father! He doesn’t actually say “Luke, I am your father,” as many people like to say, but rather, “No, I am your father!” Also, the Evil Queen says “Magic Mirror on the wall,” instead of “Mirror, mirror, on the wall.” Also, upon first meeting FBI agent Clarice Starling, incarcerated cannibalistic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter actually says “Good morning,” not “Hello, Clarice!”
The wrong family of bears - Did you know it’s Berenstain Bears and not Berenstein Bears?
Wait, I thought these were cartoons, not songs - Looney Tunes. Not Looney Toons. Just remember the name of its sister cartoons, called Merrie Melodies.
How do you spell the cereal? - Froot Loops
Speaking of fruit - What’s with the lack of the cornucopia in the Fruit of the Loom logo? I swore it was there?
Rich uncle - Contrary to what we remember, “Rich Uncle” Pennybags, better known as Mr. Monopoly, never wore a monocle.
Gotta catch ‘em all - I’m sorry, but Pikachu actually didn’t have a black detail on the tip of its tail.
Talking about tails - Curious George doesn’t have a tail! Wouldn’t that make him a chimpanzee instead of a monkey?
The magic comedian - Who remembers Sinbad being a genie in the movie Shazam back in the 1990s? Wait, he didn’t? And there didn’t exist such movie title until 2019?? I guess we’ve gotten that confused with Kazaam staring Shaquille O’Neal, not Sinbad!
Got it going on with the wrong band - “Stacey’s Mom” was not written by Bowling for Soup, instead it was by Fountains of Wayne.
How does the song end again? - The final chorus of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” doesn’t end with “Of the world!” Just ends with “…’Cause we are the champions!” And that is a perfect ending to my list!

China's been after Taiwan for a long time...
@poshglam went to Russia, then China tried to steal it off of the @scad website...#SCADHongKong closed. Now Russia, who touches China on the boarder is saying 757 years of landmines in Ukraine. I wasn't able to buy POSHGLAM Ukraine when they wanted it. Hopefully #VogueUkraine is updating the right way. The war is so sad. Ukraine guarded their borders for so long. Both Ukraine and Russia, now have a Mormon Temple. I don't have all of the details about the Russian one yet. POSHGLAM is international. I was born by Hartsfield, attended World Changers and moved to East Cobb in GA. It's sad in the dumbest state when people don't do what they are supposed to do. It's the end of Minority Mental Health. I got though July 4th, July 7th and Bastille Day. Made it to Prince George's birthday after I tried to name him Charlette, 10 years ago with the Telegraph. At the time, I had an article about Nelson Mandela's clothing line. Rest in Peace tata madiba, I almost died saving your life.
Hopefully we can save as many lives as possible in Europe and Taiwan as China tries to invade the country after stealing three of my business ideas. Years of IP theft, and apparently trying to rewrite the bible.

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (also rec’d by André Leon Talley, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno, Ernest Hemingway, Martin Luther King Jr. & Nelson Mandela)
“Tolstoy is considered by almost everyone as the greatest novelist that ever lived, and I can only say, me too. From his first beautiful book on [war] and [Sebastopol,] all through his long and marvelously productive life he stands alone as a writer…It is interesting to me to think of the seeds of his stories, ‘his illuminations.’ Anna Karenina was evolved because he had heard of a woman who had jumped in front of a moving train and died. The grandeur of [War and Peace], a historical novel, which must have brought Tolstoy almost daily illuminations. He was fastidious as Proust in his realism of the styles and fashions of the times, and like Proust he was working on an immense canvas.” -CM
The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky (also rec’d by Grimes & Ralph Steadman)
“The next and possibly one of the strongest influences in my reading life is [Dostoevsky] – Tolstoy, of course, is at the top… One is just swept away from one incredible scene to another incredible scene. The scene when [Nastasya] lights a fire to burn up the bank notes in front of [Ganya] is almost like a [True Story] fiction, but in spite of it, the emotions of the scene make it so real.” -CM
My Life by Isadora Duncan
“When I was fourteen years old, the great love of my life, which influenced the whole family, was Isadora Duncan. I read [My Life,] not only read it but preached it. My daddy, who believed with my mother, that a child should read without censorship, could not help but be amazed by my preaching of ‘free love’ to the family at large, and anyone else who would listen. One nosy neighbor criticized my parents for letting me speak so precociously about [Isadora] Duncan and her love life.” -CM
Dubliners by James Joyce (also rec’d by Cheryl Strayed, Ernest Hemingway, Hozier, Jim Morrison & Leonard Cohen)
“This week I’ve been reading [Dubliners.] How such a spasm of poetry could have come out of the grimy Dublin streets of that time is miraculous to me. [A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,] I also read every year or so. … Whenever I think of artists having a hard time I think of James Joyce. He had one hell of a time to earn a living for himself and his family. [Dubliners] was suppressed, and at one time burnt, I believe [Ulysses] was suppressed and pirated all over the world, and of course James Joyce did not receive any of the pirated money. He earned only the fame and the grandeur of a noble spirit.” -CM
Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald (also rec’d by Cate Blanchett, Gene Wilder, Henry Rollins, Julianne Moore & Peter Hook)
“…Another lesser writer who is also dear to me. Scott Fitzgerald, always in debt to his agent; with a wife that was mad and confined to institutions. Scott, extravagant, [lovable,] playful and impossible. His genius flourished, and he wrote [Tender is the Night,] in the most appalling psychological situation.” -CM
The Beast in the Jungle by Henry James (also rec’d by Susan Sontag)
“It’s a bleak white January day, and I’ve been drinking cup after cup of hot tea and reading Henry James. I’d never realized how really good he is. One is quite willing to stumble through pages of ambiguities for those sudden, exquisite lines, those almost unexpected revelations. I’d never realized how deeply he has influenced the present poets—Eliot, Auden, etc. I want us to read the Beast in the Jungle together.”  -CM
Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen
“[Edwin Peacock and John Ziegler] insisted that I read a book called [Out of Africa,] and since I thought it was about big game hunting, I insisted just as firmly I didn’t want to read it. In the end they got their way, for when Reeves and I were in the car on our way to Fayetteville, they slipped two books in my lap; they were [Out of Africa] and [Seven Gothic Tales.] I started [Out of Africa] in the car and read until sundown. Never had I felt such enchantment. After years of reading this book, and I have read it many times, I still have a sense of both solace and freedom whenever I start it again. I have naturally read all of her books, but these particular two are my favorites.” -CM
Black Boy by Richard Wright (also rec’d by Howard Zinn)
“Another writer who was particularly dear to me is Richard Wright. … Dick and I often discussed the South, and his book, [Black Boy,] is one of the finest books by a Southern [Negro.]” -CM
Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (also rec’d by St. Vincent)
“After the postman comes this afternoon I’ll read Proust. Today I was thinking of the immense debt I owe to Proust. It’s not a matter of his ‘influencing my style’ or anything like that—it’s the rare good fortune of having always something to turn to, and great book that never tarnishes, never become[s] dull from familiarity.” -CM
Where Angels Fear to Tread by E.M. Forster
“Another author whom I read constantly is E.M. Forster. One of the most enjoyable times I’ve ever had was when Mary Mercer read aloud [Where Angels Fear to Tread.] We both went into fits of laughter.” -CM

Eliminate Brain Fog and Build Your Empire
Tumblr media
One of the hazards they never bother to tell you about when you become an online marketer is brain fog. You know what I mean… you’ve been sitting at your computer for 10 minutes or 10 hours when you realize your brain is moving slower than a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter.
Tumblr media
And you know if you could just get your brain in gear, you could get a ton of work done today. But despite that 5th cup of coffee you still can’t seem to focus. What’s a marketer to do?
I take a cue from Nelson Mandela when this happens and I take a walk. If the weather is good, I get some sun on my face, too. Taking even just a 10 minute brisk walk outside can do wonders for your brain, and 20 is even better.
Did you know that making a habit of writing backwards with your non-dominant hand can create an abundance of new connections in your brain that make it work better, faster and more creatively? Leonardo Da Vinci filled entire journals with mirror writing – and you have to admit, the guy was no slouch when it came to intelligence or accomplishments.
Doing things that you don’t normally do, such as taking up a new interest or hobby, will also awaken sleeping parts of your brain. Make it a point to learn a new skill so well, you can teach it to others.
Try going to bed earlier. Most people don’t get enough sleep, and this is one of the biggest causes of brain fog. Sleeping in until noon isn’t good, either. As they say, moderation in all things. Get up at a decent time, drink water and exercise, and then get straight to work.
Take a mid-afternoon nap. Thomas Edison was a prolific napper and look at what he accomplished. And Winston Churchill – despite running a powerful country during a world war – set aside hours each day just for himself to nap, bathe, dress and eat in peace.
Take risks. If you’re taking a risk, it’s going to be something important to you. If it’s important, you’re going to have an enthusiasm for it. And if you’ve got enthusiasm, brain fog tends to vanish. Henry Ford believed that if you’re going to fail, you should do it fast and learn from it. In other words, stop dreaming and take some action. No one who base jumped off a bridge ever felt like they had brain fog at that moment.
Cut out the sugar. The more sugar you eat today, the more tired you will be later today and again tomorrow. It’s not worth it. No doubt you’ve seen the studies that suggest sugar is as addictive as cocaine. It makes for a great headline, but the bottom line is sugar is addictive and as we’ve known for years, it’s bad for you, too. Go 21 days without your favorite sweet tweets – whatever they may be – and see how you and your brain feel.
Bonus: When you cut out the sugar you’ll not only feel better, you’ll look better too. They did a double blind study where men were asked to rate the attractiveness of women. Those women who did not eat sugar the previous day were rated as being more attractive than those that did. Sugar not only makes you and your brain sluggish – it can also make you less beautiful or handsome.
Make health such a big priority in your life, you end up creating a product in the health niche and sell 100,000 copies. Why not? It’s been done before and it will be done many more times because there will always be people who are willing to pay to get their health and energy back. So let them pay you.
See what happens? I start out by writing a few ways to combat brain fog when you’re stuck behind a computer for too long, and I end up creating a new product.
It’s good to be an online marketer, don’t you think? The ideas are everywhere and the market for solutions never ends.
Now put away the candy and go take a brisk walk to clear your head. Then come back and get to work on building your online empire!

Record Mirror- 08-25-1984
Ministry Of Works
Did you know that Freddie Mercury wants to make a reggae record? And that Roger Taylor would be selling flowers if he wasn't in Queen? Read on for more fascinating facts
MAYHEM IN Munich! Freddie Mercury is cavorting with a scantily dressed transvestite and it's only three in the afternoon. Are you man or woman enough to read on? Then swallow your vitamin pills and follow me.
Queen are limbering up for their forthcoming tour in Germany and to celebrate another single rising majestically up the charts, they're holding a little press bash in Munich's P1 club. A place even more decadent than the South Finchley Whiskey A Go Go.
The ghost of Adolf Hitler probably wanders around here on dark nights, as The Fuhrer used to store his paintings and other plunder in the club and the building next door. Unfortunately there's nothing left around today.
Instead, the club has gems of another kind. A selection of Queen's videos including the notorious 'Body Language' — and champagne and wine flowing like Niagara Falls.
The cabaret is Freddie's own idea: a group of well passed it drag artists, so outrageous in G strings and lingerie that they make Divine seem as tame as Marjorie Proops. Freddie's more than willing to join in when one of the girls does a rendition of 'I Want To Break Free', but the rest of the members of Queen look on shyly from the comforts of the bar. Everybody, but everybody is here to witness the event, including a film crew from the US air force, tramping around in full combat gear making a nuisance of themselves.
Freddie's doing well considering he's in quite a lot of pain. He remains tight lipped about the full details but he injured his leg after an incident in a club. A physiotherapist has been pummelling at it nearly every day.
"This c+ + + kicked me," says Fred. "I'm hoping my knee will be ready in time for the tour, but it's still giving me a lot of trouble. It might mean I will have to cut down on some of my more elaborate gorgeous stage moves."
FRED'S ALSO been hobbling around a Munich recording studio putting the finishing touches to his first ever solo album which should be out in January. Gadzooks, could this be the start of a split with Queen? Is it true Limahl's going to take over?
"Not at all. I've wanted to do a solo album for a long time and the rest of the band have encouraged me to do it. Some of them are even featured doing a few bits and pieces to help me out.
"There are a lot of musical territories I wanted to explore, which I couldn't really do with Queen. I wanted to cover such things as reggae rhythms and I've done a couple of tracks with a symphony orchestra. It will have a very rich sound."
Fred's also done some work with Michael Jackson, but he still doesn't know when this is going to see the light of day. They've done a selection of tracks together in Michael's home studio. For a while, Fred was even in the running to do 'State Of Shock'.
"I was out of town at the time so Mick did it instead," he says. "I don't mind at all. I'd like to release something with Michael because he is a really marvellous person to work with. It's all a question of time because we never seem to be together at the right time. Just think, I could have been on 'Thriller'. Think of the royalties I've missed out on.
"Michael has been a friend of ours for a long time. He's been to our shows and enjoyed them. We make a great team."
One of Fred's songs 'Love Kills', is being used on the soundtrack of the reactivated 'Metropolis' film and he hopes to make a 20 minute video using four or five of his own songs.Freddie and all the members of Queen have a long standing appreciation of 'Metropolis', which originally came out in 1927. Their stage set, in the shape of a futuristic city, has been inspired by it.The lighting rig measures 74ft by 50ft and the original design was so heavy they had to change it because it was in danger of bringing theatre roofs down. What a way to go, crushed by your own equipment.
AFTER THE European tour. Queen will be taking the whole shebang down to South America, headlining a 10 day festival in Rio. The place they will be playing is an amphitheatre down by the sea that can seat 300,000 people a night. It all makes Castle Donington seem like just another night at the Marquee. A local radio station in Rio held a survey to see who the most popular bands were and then some local promoters went out and booked them for the extravaganza. Naturally, Queen came out top.
Queen will also be doing some shows in South Africa. This is more than just a little bit controversial. Especially with the memory of Nelson Mandela still very warm.
"We've thought about the morals of it a lot and it's something we've decided to do," says Brian May. "This band is not political, we are not out to make statements, we play to entertain anybody who comes to listen. The show will be in Botswana in front of a mixed audience."
The band wanted to play Russia but the authorities objected. This situation might change now though, considering that Iron Maiden have been let into Poland to wreak havoc. *
"The Russians still think we're very decadent," confides Roger Taylor. "We want to play China as well, and Korea. John and I spent a holiday in Korea and it's a fascinating place. They're finishing work on the Olympic stadium for the next games!
Perhaps the Ruskies heard about Roger's high living on Ibiza. He's bought a house there and enjoys powerboat racing. Play time is over for the time being, though. After their two year break. Queen have been working more than 12 hours a day rehearsing.
"It's strange how rusty we are, and so we're trying to blow the cobwebs away," continues Roger. "It's taking a lot of work. Usually we rehearse until about nine and then we eat together and decide what we're going to do in the evenings. The clubs here are really fun. Something to cater for every taste or perversion.
"On the tour we'll be playing a lot of the old material and we'll be giving the audience what they want. A lot of the music I hear in the charts today doesn't interest me. I just can't see how anybody can get excited over Spandau Ballet. It doesn't send shivers up my spine. I like listening to Bruce Springsteen."
They might be old stagers, but Roger claims that tickets for Queen's British shows sold oul in three hours flat and they could have easily played another 12 nights here.
"We still have the rock and roil gypsy mentality," he says. "Even after 12 years without a line-up change we still really enjoy the buzz from playing live and the fact that we have hit singles. Some bands in our position might take it all in their stride, but we're still like kids, we get very excited.

The Week Ahead: September 13-19, 2021
Void of Course Moon
Tuesday, September 14, 10:57 UT (Sagittarius) - 11:34 UT (Capricorn)
Thursday, September 16, 05:40 UT (Capricorn) - 15:23 UT (Aquarius)
Saturday, September 18, 09:14 UT (Aquarius) - 20:22 UT (Pisces)
One shortie on Tuesday.
Lunar Phases
Monday, September 13, 20:29 UT - First Quarter Moon, 21:16 Sagittarius
The key phrases for the First Quarter lunar phrase are to "take action" and to "build new structures" of support. This is a tricky one, as we're looking for something to believe in - and we're so desperate we're liable to be deceived (perhaps by ourselves). Some of us want a more spiritual direction, but we have to remember to be discerning about it. We can learn how to keep our head in the clouds and our feet on the ground, and still function productively.
Friday, September 17, 08:18 UT - Gibbous Moon, 9:40 Aquarius
The key phrases for the Gibbous lunar phase are to "tweak and adjust" our plans, and to "pour more effort" into our New Moon project. The chart for this is intense. There are strong "flowing" aspects as well as strong "challenging" aspects. We could have to make some difficult choices, and/or be forced into making a choice we don't want to make. We feel personally strong and powerful, but that doesn't seem to make any difference! Keep the communication lines open, and for Heaven's sake don't sulk.
Retrograde/Direct/Etc.
Pre-retrograde shadow: Mercury/Libra, Ceres/Gemini
Retrograde: Pallas Athene/Pisces, Jupiter/Aquarius, Saturn/Aquarius, Chiron/Aries, Uranus/Taurus, Neptune/Pisces, Pluto/Capricorn, Eris/Aries
Post-retrograde shadow: Juno/Sagittarius
On Tuesday, September 14, at 08:19 UT, Mercury achieves its "greatest eastern enlongation" from the Sun - that is, it is as far ahead of the Sun, in the Zodiac, as it's going to move in this cycle. It acts a bit like a Last Quarter Moon situation, in that we "turn away" from something that isn't working any more. This may not be something we particularly want to do, and we may try to manipulate our way out of it, if we can't negotiate our way out of it. Yet there are blessings if we do, and deep down we know that!
Ingress
Wednesday, September 15, 00:14 - transiting Mars enters Libra
Mars is in detriment in Libra - this sign is opposite Aries, which Mars rules. We can boil it down to: Libra wants to negotiate, and Mars wants to fight! Much of this transit is going to be about us learning when to negotiate and when to fight. (This was both Abraham Lincoln's and Nelson Mandela's natal Mars placement.) There are learning opportunities and challenges ahead of us....
Et Cetera
There is one Opportunity Period this week: from Friday, September 17, at 16:45 UT, to Saturday, September 18, at 09:14 UT. "Very versatile OP. Take advantage of it before Mercury turns retrograde next week." (The exact moment is Monday, September 27, 05:10 UT.)
Monday through Thursday are very busy; then The Cosmos seems to taper off just in time for the weekend. We're in "search for meaning" mode, and although sometimes that gets us into trouble - other sometimes, that rewards us well. We're building up to a Full Moon coming on Monday the 20th - which will be followed by the Libra Equinox on Wednesday the 22nd. We can get each other through all these changes if we work together.

World War Z was published in 2006, but takes place in 2009 at the earliest.  Late in the book, astronaut Terry Knox states that the International Space Station took over 10 years to complete; it started construction in November 1998, and Chief of Staff Karl Rove Grover Carlson says that the Republican party barely eked back into power after a disastrous 2-termer who started a “brush fire war” in the Middle East (George W. Bush).  He mentions an election year, but he doesn’t specify if it was the new president’s first or second term, so it’s either set right after 2008 or 2012.  This was written before the Nintendo Wii was announced, but one chapter mentions that people brought their GameCubes with them as they fled their homes in search of safety in the frozen Canadian wilderness.  This same chapter also mentions that they didn’t know how to pick survival gear; a park ranger finds a SpongeBob SquarePants sleeping bag frozen in the mud because its owner didn’t know the difference between a child’s indoor sleeping bag for slumber parties and a real insulated survival bag for camping.
The new president is never named, he’s just told be be pro-big business and anti-regulation, pushing a placebo zombie vaccine through the FDA to jumpstart the economy.  When shit hits the fan, he is “sedated” and his vice president takes power; we’re never told what happened to the president, whether he was bitten or had a stroke, just that he was “sedated.”  His Vice President is directly implied to be Colin Powell; he’s former military with family in Jamaica and black.  He appoints Howard Dean to be his vice president to form a bipartisan coalition; he is never referred to by name, but it is clearly supposed to be Howard Dean.  He was a rising star in the Democratic party from Vermont whose wife is a doctor and whose career imploded after he had a passionate outburst.  In 2004, Howard Dean gave a speech where he started passinately screaming about how he was gonna start sweeping state primaries and ride a wave into the White House, punctuating his point by going “HHEEUEAHHGH!!”  This was political suicide in 2004, and he was laughed out of the race.  In the book, he is referred to only as “the Whacko” because of this.  It is implied that he was Powell’s second choice for VP, his first being Barack Obama; the Whacko says that the Democrats wanted somebody else, somebody of the same skin color as the president, but that the country wasn’t ready for that.  In 2004, Obama was a candidate for senate in Illinois, so popular and so well spoken that he gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention before he even won his seat; then and there, pundits already had him pegged as the first black president, they could see the writing on the walls.  The Whacko becomes president when Powell dies of stress, but he is consistently referred to only as the wartime Vice President, out of respect for his boss.
Also, the Attorney General is implied to be Rudy Giuliani; all that is said about him was that he was the mayor of New York and once tried to give himself emergency powers to stay in office after his term.  Giuliani did exactly that after 9/11.
Other real life figures mentioned in the book
Fidel Castro; a ton of Cuban Americans flee the continent and return to the island during the zombie war, and he jumpstarts the economy by putting them to work as cheap laborers and slowly integrating them back into Cuban society.  He rehabilitates his image by stepping down as dictator and democratizing the country, voting himself out of office before the “nortecubanos” could hang him for decades of war crimes.
Nelson Mendela, referred to by his birth name Rolihlahla, the father of modern South Africa, he personally invites Paul Redekker, a former apartheid era political analyst, to solve the zombie problem; in the 80s, Redekker created a plan for the white minority government in case the black majority ever rose up against them.  In real life, Mandela lowered the temperature when he was elected president, saying that revenge against the apartheid government would do more harm than good.  In the story, Mandela uses this as justification to reuse the apartheid era plan to handle the zombie outbreak instead.  Redekker is so overcome by his compassion and forgiveness that he has a mental episode and dissociates, believing himself to be a black South African.
Kim Jong-il, the dictator of North Korea, he withdraws all troops from the DMZ and shuts the entire country down.  After months of radio silence, it is revealed that the entire country’s population has vanished; all satellite imagery shows a desolate wasteland, no zombies, but no humans either. He presumably moved everyone into subterranean bunker systems where he not only control their lives as on the surface, but now their access to food, water, and air.  He presumably became the god emperor he always wanted to be; either that, or the entire tunnel complex has been overrun, turning every man woman and child in North Korea into zombies.  The South Korean government refuses to send a expedition into the North to figure out what happened, lest they open up one of the tunnels and unleash millions of zombies onto the surface.
Martin Scorsese, mentioned in passing only as “Marty,” a friend of world famous film director Roy Elliot, who himself is a thinly veiled pastiche of Steven Spielberg.  Interestingly enough, the audio book features Martin Scorsese doing the voice of the conartist who created the placebo vaccine
One chapter has a ton of vapid celebrities hole together in a fortified mansion on Long Island, and takes great care to show each of them getting torn apart not by zombies but by regular people who storm the facility because they were stupid enough to broadcast their location on reality television.  A redneck with a “Get’er Done” hat (Larry the Cable Guy) and some bald guy with diamond earrings (Howie Mandel) blow themselves up with a grenade.  Rival political commentators, an annoying guy who talks about feminization of western society and a leathery blonde (Bill Maher and Ann Coulter) have end-of-the-world viking sex as the facility burns to the ground.  A dumb starlet (Paris Hilton) is killed by one of her handlers and her little rat dog escapes on foot.  A radio shock jock (Howard Stern) actually survives the war and restarts his show.
Michael Stipe of REM joins the army to fight the zombies
Another war veteran mentions how his brother used to have a bunch of Mel Brooks’ old comedy skits on vinyl record, and how he and his squad acted out the “Boy meets Girl” puppet skit with some human skulls.  Mel Brooks is author and narrator Max Brooks’ father.
Queen Elizabeth II, refuses to evacuate England when the island is overrun by zombies.  She intends to remain in Buckingham Palace “for the duration,” mirroring the fact that her parents refused to evacuate to Canada during World War II.
Vladimir Putin declares himself Tsar of the Holy Russian Empire, an ultra-orthodox religious state that has armed priests execute political dissidents under the guise of mercy killing people who have been bitten by zombies.
Yang Liwei, the first “taikonaut” (Chinese astronaut) has a space station named after him
While the main conflict is about government responses to the zombie pandemic, we see glimpses of a greater war torn planet.
A major plot line involves a Chinese Civil War which sees the entire communist politburo nuked out of existence by a rebel sub commander, as well as an attempted “scorched space policy” where the government planned to blow up their space station with scuttling charges to cause a cascade of space debris to encircle the Earth and prevent any other countries from launching missions in the future (this is known as Kessler Syndrome in real life, and was featured as the inciting incident of the 2013 movie Gravity).  The People’s Republic becomes the United Federation.
Iran and Pakistan destroy each other in nuclear war; everyone thought it would be India and Pakistan, but they had very close diplomatic infrastructure in place to prevent such a catastrophe; Pakistan helped Iran build a nuclear arsenal, but as millions of refugees fled from India through Pakistan to the east, Iran had to blow up some Pakistani bridges to stem the flow of zombies, which led to a border war and eventually total nuclear retaliation.
Floridians flee to Cuba, Wisconsinites flee to Canada, the federal government flees to Hawaii.  Everything east of the Rockies is abandoned and ruled by warlords until the government sorts itself out and mounts an expedition to clear the continent of zombies by literally marching an unbroken line of soldiers stretching from Canada to Mexico across the wasteland to the Atlantic.
Israel withdraws from Gaza and the West Bank to become super isolationist, building a wall around the entire country to stop the zombies getting in (they were the first country to respond to the pandemic, and the most successful), but the religious right rebels against the secular left in a civil war that sees Jerusalem ceded to a unified Palestine.
It is an amazing, multifaceted story with so much going on that nobody recognizes.  It was written as a response to the end of the Cold War and the start of the War on Terror.  It’s about a geopolitical shift, a change in the status quo, a disaster from which the world never recovers; America before 9/11 was a very different place than American after 9/11.  Iraq and Afghanistan changed everything, and we’re still feeling their effects to this day; the story uses the zombie apocalypse as the next big international disaster the world must adapt to.  World War Z is World War III with zombies, and I think it would do a lot better if it were published today, now that we’ve had several decades to respond to the fall of the Soviet Union and the endless wars in the Middle East and a global pandemic.

Can the ANCYL bounce back? The crisis of youth leadership and development in South Africa
The formation and the announcement of the African National Congress Youth League National Youth National Task Team (ANCYL NYTT) on the 8 April 2021 has brought back the much needed discussion of youth leadership in the country. Although the primary objective of the ANCYL NYTT is to deliver the long-awaited congress of the ANCYL that has been postponed several times now. The revival of a once powerful political force in South Africa is on the cards. One cannot forget the vibrant ANCYL coming from way back, the ANCYL of Anton Lembede with the likes of Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Oliver Tambo to the more recent ANCYL under the likes of  Melusi Gigaba, Fikile Mbalula and lastly Julius Malema.
It is not a secret that the ANCYL has been in disarray for almost 10 years now since the departure of now President of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema. It is concerning that the main worries about the formation of this ANCYL NYTT mostly in the press and general public is that it must not fall in the party factions fights, it must not be used by the older comrades and that it must make sure it is independent. While these are legitimate worries they are not the most important ones in this conjecture, at least when it concerns the struggles of young people and youth leadership.
Due to the crisis of leadership in the ANC itself, with the “RET bloc” led now by Ace Magashule and the Cyril Ramaphosa supporters it is likely that this “revival” might end up being used as a “political knife” in the political battles of the party as the convener Nonceba Mhlauli conveyed.  This may also be made easier by the long crisis in the leadership of the ANC YL in the recent years, the discontinuity and inconsistency that we saw with its leadership being disbanded, reinstated, changed ect. Another worry that might contribute to this is whether the radical history and memory of the ANCYL will not be passed on to the new leadership and that massive changes within the struggles of young people have occurred and this will require a much deeper understanding on which direction the ANCYL takes going forward.
The ANCYL has been absent in recent crucial struggles of young people. The 2015/2016 Fees Must Fall(FMF) movement and recent 2021 uprising, struggles of learners at schools, struggles against youth unemployment which is at its worst, struggles against Gender Based Violence, the struggles for the implementation of the Basic Income Grant – the list is endless. Youth development agencies and youth governance structures like the NYDA have been in crisis, with young people taking the process to court. The National Youth Policy (2030) is a complete joke and a copy and paste of the National Youth Policy (2015).
The task of the ANCYL NYTT must not only focus on rebuilding the leadership structures which might end up just being a step leader to positions of power in the ANC but it must also focus on reviving itself as the leader movement of young people in South Africa, a movement that took to the streets to fight for Free Education, against youth unemployment and for the interests of young people before.
It is important that the ANCYL NYTT doesn’t take a linear position that says, 1; we fix the leadership crisis then, 2; we organize and mobilize to fight for young people’s interests. Young people have beared the brunt of the economic woes of this country. The coronavirus pandemic accelerated these woes of young people. The chaos we saw in public schooling, with closure and opening schools, young people being the first in the retrenchment lines due to the “last in, first out principle” and continuous FMF protests.
The ANCYL should not wait until it is “organized” or “ready” to mount a struggle. The fight is already going on and it has been on for some time.  Young people in the townships, at universities, at workplaces have been part of social struggles. The need of a youth movement in the political arena that is able to organize young people across, to unify and give a sense amongst young people that the struggle of a young person who financially excluded at Wits is the same struggle of a young person in the township and rural areas who needs that R350 unemployment grant and the same for young women and girls fighting against gender based violence.
Tumblr media
It is important then to ask this question of whether the ANCYL will bounce back and return to the political force we all have known it to be. Historically in South Africa, groups that lose power once never seem to be able to bounce back. Maybe the reason the ANCYL is important is that no form of national youth organization has risen in the period of its disarray. The rise of the EFF has been visible but it has not fully taken over the position that was occupied by the Youth League in our townships and rural areas.
The ANCYL might not be the answer to the struggles of young people, it might not go back to its glory days and be a political force but any form of effort to build youth organization, to bring back the youth representative structures that have been absent to guide the struggles of young people, to respond to the onslaught on young people surely presents a moment of hope.
