Bratislava Slovakia
Dear Little Mosey:
I am getting close to where your great step grandfather’s last mission ended before he was captured. Back in 1944 this country was called Czechoslovakia. Now it is called Slovakia.
I am having a rest day and exploring the city but wanted to take some time to tell you about what the last mission was like. Here is how his last day would have started.
A typical mission day for a B-17 bomber pilot in the 15th Air Force, based in Foggia, Italy, during September 1944, was tightly scheduled:
### Early Morning
- **O2:30 AM - Wake Up:** Pilots would start their day early. Get dressed
- **03:00 AM - Breakfast:** A quick meal of eggs, bacon, and coffee was served.
### Pre-Mission Activities
- **03:30 AM - Mission Briefing:** Intelligence officers provided details about the mission, including objectives and weather.
Tumblr media
- **04:30 AM - Gear and Prep:** Pilots prepared their flight gear. Two pair of long underwear flight-suit, electric suits, flack jacket, parachute.
Ride to airplane
- **5:00 AM - Aircraft Inspection:** Pre-flight checks were conducted on the B-17s. This was done by pilots and crews. The crew chiefs would be there usually having worked all night.
Tumblr media
### Mission Execution
- **06:00 AM - Takeoff:** Missions typically began around this time, lasting as many as 8-10’hours.
Here is what the cockpit of a B-17 looked like
Tumblr media
His last mission was to Blechhammer oil refinery which was one of the most heavily defended targets. It was also far from Italy. Here is what it looked like flying in formation.
Tumblr media
Temperatures at altitude of 30,000’ often got to -50 to -70 below zero.
Return and Debriefing
- **Afternoon - Return:** After landing, pilots participated in a debriefing to discuss the mission’s outcomes.
Often there were wounded aboard they had to go to hospital so it could be a long time before you what happened to your crew member, tent mate and friend.
Before every mission each guy put all of his things on his bed in case he didn’t make it back. This would be returned to the family.
Evening
The day ended with dinner and downtime to try to unwind.
Once in position most crew members were restricted to their areas.
There are times when they did this 3-4 days in a row. I am not sure how a person could do this. It must have been terribly stressful. When I have problems I think about how hard other people have had it. Then I feel very luck even when things don’t go right.
Love you little buddy
PS
Today I ride to meet your step grandmother and her mom. We will travel to where your great step grandfather had to bail out and was captured. This began his journey as a POW.

1944 06 01 Summer of 44 - Nicolas Trudgian
As the Allied invasion of northern France drew nearer, the entire length of southern England had seemingly become one huge army camp. While the local population went about its daily business as best it could, British and American troops massed at every point near the coast in readiness for the imminent crossing of the Channel. Though the RAF fighters of 10 Group were tasked in the Air Defense role, like all RAF squadrons that could be spared, they became involved with the softening up process, a pre-requisite of any large scale landing on enemy occupied territory. Under the leadership of Wing Commander Peter Brothers, 10 Groups Spitfire Wing based at Culmhead was heavily involved flying shipping patrols over the beachhead and Rhubarbs - low-level strikes of opportunity - disrupting enemy movements and communications.Nicolas Trudgians comprehensive painting Summer of 44 recreates with such realism a scene in southwest England just a few days before the Normandy landings in June 1944. Mark IX Spitfires of No. 126 Squadron, returning from combat over France, sweeps low over the local branch line railway station on their way back to Culmhead. Below, as the GWR Prairie tank engine pulls out of the station, American troops are assembling their equipment in readiness for the impending invasion. Adding great atmosphere to his composition, Nick has painted a classically peaceful English landscape, highlighting the unique contrast between war and peace that pervaded Britain during that summer of 44.

Episode 108: Aimo Koivunen's Nazi Meth-Fueled Survival Saga Photodump
Image 01-02: Aimo Koivunen was a Finnish ski patrol soldier in a Nazi-Occupied Finland during WW2. Image 03: During WW2, Finland was constantly staving off attacks by Soviet Russia while under Nazi occupation. Eventually, Finland would join the Allied forces to fight Germany; however, Finland’s location between the Nazis and Soviets forced a strategic hand. Image 04-06: In April of 1944, Aimo was serving on ski patrol in Soviet territory. Ski warfare was extremely difficult as it required combat skills, cold weather survival knowledge, and expert skiing. Fun fact: the modern biathlon was modeled on ski warfare during WW2. Image 07-08: Aimo’s ski patrol squad was fleeing an attack from Soviets when he accidentally overdosed on a ration of Pervitin (Nazi Meth pills) large enough for his entire squad. Pervitin was distributed to Nazi soldiers as a “perfect war drug” which would help soldiers act quickly and energetically under the pressures of combat. Image 09: Hitler was rumored to have taken Pervitin regularly. Some report that he was injected with the drug intravenously. This video depicts Hitler at the 1936 Olympics- what do you think? Image 10: Aimo woke up from his meth overdose to find himself alone and lost (and still very high) in the Arctic Circle with no food, no ammunition, and no maps. Miraculously, Aimo survived and wrote about his experience in a magazine. Some believe that Aimo tapped into some sort of supernatural power or accessed another realm during his high, others believe it was just dumb luck. His story took 2nd place. He lived to be 71 years old. What do you guys think of this story? What is the craziest thing you learned this episode? Could you survive in Aimo’s place?

IMAGES: USAF this time performs a "Mammoth Walk"
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 06/08/2023 - 18:02 in Military, War Zones
The U.S. Air Force's most recent "Elephant Walk" was so impressive that the U.S. officially called it the "Mammoth Walk", or Mammoth Walk.
On May 5, 57 subordinate aircraft of the 7ª U.S. Air Force from the bases of Osan and Kunsan, where the 51ª and 8ª Air Wings are stationed, respectively, were aligned at Osan Air Base, South Korea.
Tumblr media
There were on the runway forty F-16C/D Fighting Falcons of the 35º, 36º and 80º Fighter Squadrons, twelve A-10C Thunderbolt II attack jets of the 25º Fighter Squadron, two U-2S Dragon Ladys spy planes of the 5º Reconnaissance Squadron and three C-12 Hurons transport turboprops from the 2ª
youtube
The F-16 and A-10 aircraft shown in the photos were armed with real missiles and bombs of various types, such as AIM-9 and AIM-120 for air combat, AGM-65 to attack ground targets and AGM-88 HARM for anti-radar, and GBU-38, GBU-54, GBU-31 and GBU-31(V)3 (Pilantogi
Tumblr media
Some F-16s have also been equipped with the HARM system, which is rare in the Block 40 versions, but allows them to perform SEAD (anti-aircraft defense) missions such as the Block 50 versions, which are usually designed for this.
Tumblr media
With the exercise, the United States of America impressively emphasized its commitment to the Indo-Pacific region. The presence of its air forces in South Korea should contribute to the stability of the region. Osan is the closest air base to communist North Korea.
Since World War II, the "Elephant Walk" has been a constant term in the U.S. Air Force. The Army Air Forces had a large number of bombers available in 1944, with which the U.S. regularly flew attacks with more than 1,000 aircraft. For this, the heavy planes rolled to take off in long rows one after the other. The image resembled the march of heavy elephants on their way to the next water point, the USAF statements described. The term remained and even entered the USAF regulations and since then, the Elephant Walk has been the official expression of an exercise with a maximum number of aircraft.
Tumblr media
In elephant marches, the machines roll one after the other on the track. In their simple variant, they occur as a rolling exercise without takeoffs and subsequent landings. With the exercise, the air forces regularly check all aspects of a squadron's readiness to fulfill its war mission. "Correct" Elephant Walks end with the departure of all participating machines. Each aircraft capable of flying and ready for use and each crew must comply with the starting window of the war plan.
Tumblr media
The recent "Mammoth Walk" at Osan Air Base was impressive, among other things, due to the wide variety of participating aircraft types - from twin-engine turboprop connecting planes to high-altitude reconnaissance jets. One of the largest Elephant Walks in number, on the other hand, is one that occurred in the 1980s, when 120 F-111 bomber fighters took off in less than an hour as part of Operation Desert Storm of 2003.
