Restaurant 1000 heralds McDonald’s Australia’s sustainable future
McDonald’s Australia has heralded a new era of sustainability by opening its 1000th restaurant as the company’s sustainability flagship for Australia.
As part of the project, WaterGroup has deployed its smart water metering solution into the flagship restaurant, forming one of 25 core sustainability initiatives the restaurant is using to reduce its environmental impact with the aim to test, evaluate and implement industry-leading sustainability innovations into the future.
“At WaterGroup, saving water for our customers is our top priority. We are so proud to assist McDonald’s with our state-of-the-art technology to achieve real savings,” WaterGroup Managing Director Guenter Hauber-Davidson said.
“Leaking pipes, leaky toilets, fixtures, valves or sprinklers are some of the typical causes of abnormally high water use. With our solution in place, the Melton South restaurant can quickly identify when these occur to save water and money.”
McDonald’s Australia National Director of Development Diana Grosmann said, “As a sustainability innovation hub, Restaurant 1000 will play a crucial role in enabling us to continue to design and build commercially practical sustainability solutions into every new Macca’s restaurant in the years to come.”

McDonald’s Australia Director of Supply Chain and Sustainability Kylie Freeland added, “Through collaboration with the franchisee of the restaurant, as well as partners like WaterGroup, we hope that Restaurant 1000 will allow us to learn quickly and expand successful innovation trials that enable us to continue to implement practices, equipment and products to improve our environmental impact.”
WaterGroup’s smart water metering solution comprises a smart NB-IoT-enabled logger that connects to a site’s existing water meter. The data from that meter is then sent to the cloud and is accessible via a client-facing portal. At Melton South they also have WaterGroup’s AWARE service, where the WaterGroup team monitor and alert the restaurant of unusual water usage turning insights into action.
During the 2019 financial year, WaterGroup has delivered measurable outcomes for its clients with water savings of almost 300 million litres and cost savings of more than $1 million.
“We wish the McDonald’s South Melton team great success with their new restaurant and look forward to saving them water and money,” Hauber-Davidson said.
Other sustainability initiatives
Restaurant 1000 customers will be served a series of new packaging items including paper straws, wooden cutlery and paper sundae cups, as McDonald’s Australia continues to phase out all plastic straws and plastic cutlery from its restaurants nationwide. The collective impact of these transitions will remove 860 tonnes of plastic from the McDonald’s system.
The restaurant will also incorporate energy-efficient air-conditioning systems, hydrocarbon equipment and a building monitoring system to help collectively reduce carbon emissions and energy used.
“Over the coming three years we plan to invest more than $500 million to open over 80 new restaurants across Australia, incorporating a range of core sustainability elements from Restaurant 1000, including PlayPlaces made with recycled content and energy-efficient equipment, as well as the use of 100% renewable energy at some restaurants.
“Through partnership with the franchisee of the restaurant, Ben Westover, we hope Restaurant 1000 will allow us to learn quickly and expand successful innovation trials, so we can continue to implement practices, equipment and products to improve our environmental impact,” Grosmann said.

In early 2021, Restaurant 1000 will commence trialling a front-of-house waste recycling system, as the business moves towards achieving its goal of diverting front-of-house waste from landfill. The trial will see front-of-house waste from Restaurant 1000 recycled into carry out bags and wraps packaging.

Carbon-neutral McDelivery via Uber Eats and DoorDash, where carbon credits will be used to offset the emissions from deliveries made from Restaurant 1000 for 12 months.
McDonald’s distributor will act as a consolidation for waste streams such as cardboard, cups, coffee grinds and soft plastics and return these to a central location, creating opportunities for circular economies.
All lighting and signage at Restaurant 1000 utilises LEDs, which use around 80% less energy than neon systems, meaning there’s less strain on the environment and electricity grid. LEDs also don’t include any toxic gases and are cleanly recycled.
The green wall at the entry to Restaurant 1000’s dining room, full of living plants that increase biodiversity, provides insulation and clean the air.
Wheel stops and kerbing throughout the drive-thru and car park are made from recycled cups and plastics. The wheel stops are made only from cups and plastics from McDonald’s restaurants and not only complete the loop for a circular economy, but are more hard-wearing than concrete alternatives.
Two electric vehicle charging stations provided by Evie Networks, and supplied by 100% renewable energy.
A bulk oil supply system that pumps bulk oil directly from the tanker into a plumbed tank in the restaurant, reducing the cardboard and plastic packaging, which would have previously been delivered each week.
Similar to the bulk oil supply system, the restaurant utilises a bulk milk system that will remove the need for approximately 1650 kg of plastic bottles from the restaurant.
Strategically placed sensors will monitor the amount of sunlight shining into the restaurant. If it’s a bright day, the sensors will automatically dim the lights in the dining room to conserve energy.
Hydrocarbon refrigerant equipment will vastly reduce the carbon footprint of the restaurant due to its low Global Warming Potential and Zero Ozone Depleting Potential.
A high-efficiency air-conditioning system that doesn’t generate as much heat and therefore doesn’t force the system to work as hard to cool. This means the air conditioning system is up to 32% more efficient than the minimum BCA-compliant system.
Paper straws, wooden cutlery, paper sundae cups and a new type of wrap that can be composted will all be trialled at the restaurant.
All irrigation on-site will utilise two 5000 L water tanks that collect and harvest rainwater.
Using specialist technology provided by WaterGroup, water usage will be monitored by a cloud-based system that will help to identify any anomalies so any leaks are addressed early.
The restaurant will also use a heat recovery hot water system that absorbs heat from the air-conditioning system to heat water. This system is more efficient than conventional water heaters and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
All timber cladding is Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification endorsed.
A building-monitoring system will assist McDonald’s to optimise energy use while the restaurant serves customers. Any anomalies in the air conditioning, lighting and refrigeration system will trigger an alert so the restaurant can rectify immediately.

However, if you still get slapped with a large energy bill in June the cause could be in your garden. Data experts at Loop, the home energy-saving assistant, have revealed that homeowners could be missing out on huge savings in their garden.
‘Creating an energy-efficient home isn’t just about what’s on the inside,’ explains Steve Buckley, Head of Data Science at Loop. ‘As the weather gets warmer, now could be the perfect time to transform your garden into an energy-saving haven.’
Here are five easy ways to save energy (and money) in your garden.
Save on energy bills in the garden
1. Switch to solar lighting

Garden lights might look pretty, but when left on all night they can rack up a hefty bill.
‘With warmer weather and longer days ahead, it’s important you take the time to change any garden light that runs on timers,’ advises Steve. ‘Make sure you switch off those you don’t need to keep on before you go to bed too.
‘Two outdoor 60W lights left on overnight could add up to £63 to your yearly bill,’ he adds.
To make even bigger saving consider opting for solar powered garden lights. Not only are they cheaper to run, but they are also less disruptive to wildlife as they emit a dimmer glow.

The number of people who consider to change their life and go to live  on a boat in London is increasing more and more.
According to an analysis by Savills ,emerged in 2016, the prices of the houses in London has risen in value by 105£ a day since 2012. This leads  the majority of the people to choose to live on a boat as a more affordable option.
Consequently, the number of people living on a boat has increased, according to the statistic of Canal River Trust on 2016, by almost 60% since 2012.
But, is anyone able to live waterway?

Why did you decide to live on a boat?
“When I first came to London I was living in a sharing house, one day a friend of mine told me he needed to get rid of his boat for work reasons and he could not take care of it anymore. He offered me to stay in the boat, he spent days showing me how it works and explaining me everything. For me it was just amazing and all I could do was accept.”

How did you adapt your life on the boat?
“I did not really have problems finding myself here. I never felt like I wanted to go back or this is not working. Of course living on a boat is not really practical, it demands a lot of attention, there are always things that you need to fix or improve but I got used to it now. And somehow it is similar to living in a house, you have everything, but just  smaller.”

What about the maintenance and costs?
“Regarding the costs if you have the continuous cruiser license, ( it means you need to move every two weeks) you will have to pay it annually and the cost depends on the size of the boat, for mine it is around 800 £ a year. I also pay the insurance, 170£ a year. This includes all the services you will need.
For the maintenance there are few supplies you need. First the gas (diesel) that you can charge directly from a supply boat passing along the canal. Then concerning the toilet, as I have a chemical toilet I need to throw the tank when it is full in a facility point. My boat does not have any heaters and I usually use stoves and wood for the cold winter. It is important you take care of all of that and think about your daily schedule: heating the boat, moving it every two weeks, empty the toilet. And I learned how to reduce my needs and to save what I can.”

Have you made any changes to bring more comfort?
“I have made a few changes since I have been here.
First I installed the solar panels so now I usually use only that for electricity. Even during a cloudy winter, it is enough for the fridge, lights, charging phone and computer. Before, I needed to move many times as the battery charges when you move the boat and turn the engines on. Still moving from one neighbourhood to another was not enough to charge it. Now 95% of the energy is provided by the solar panels.
Water, is something else that I needed to change often. I always had to keep in mind how much water I was using as it came from a container. Before I had 100 litres container and I was changing it every 5 days. Then I decided to upgrade to a 1000 litres, meaning that I can change it every two weeks when I need to move.
Also, the boat before had a small transformer that was just plugging 12 volts, which you can actually just use to charge your laptop. I bought a bigger transformer and I changed the plug for 220 volts.”
What are the mooring rules?
“So, as I have a continuous mooring licence, I need to move the boat every two weeks. I have to go to the next borough, following my kilometre area (which is determined by which direction you are coming from). You need to keep going. And also really important is to move really slowly to not create waves and disturb the other boats.”
‘Canal River Trust’ is the organisation which takes care of all the canals and river in UK.
It is its job to examine how far the boats have moved during their cruising licence, and to see if it has satisfied the requirements it needs to follow.
How strong is the sense of community between boat owners ?
“It is really strong. When I first moved I did not know anything, I started to moor and all the people asked me if I needed help. They are really connected and help each other a lot. There is also a group on Facebook called “London Boaters”, there are around 4000 members and anytime you need something or you have an issue you can ask for advice.
“I have an example of the sense of community between us. Once I moored to Victoria Park and at that time I was working, some kids got into the boat and the alarm took around 20 seconds before it went off. When it, immediately the owner of the boat next to mine  went to check and he tried to catch whoever was in there and called the police. He also wrote to the Facebook group, asking if anyone knew the owner of the boat and exactly 15 minutes after I received a call from him. I was impressed, from that moment I started to feel part of a community.”

“I enjoy the quietness of living on a boat. Space was a big problem at the beginning. I do not have much space so I just started to give away things that I did not really need. How does solar water heating work? Solar thermal panels use heat from the sun to warm fluid passing through them, as the diagram below shows. This is then used to heat your water, which is stored in a hot water cylinder. 5.       What is the integral collector-storage system?
In this collector and storage are encased in a single unit. It contains single or multiple black painted tanks or collectors. Coldwater flows through the preheated collector tubes or tanks and gets heated. This is more utilizable in mid-freeze climatic regions. Mostly used for household applications.
 6.       What are evacuated tube collectors?
It contains parallel rows of transparent glass tubes. Each tube has an outer glass tube to receive maximum solar radiation and an inner metal tube which acts as a heat absorber attached to the fin. The fin is duly coated to restrict the heat loss and transfer maximum possible heat to the running fluid or water. These types of collectors are most frequently used across the globe. For determining  the efficiency of the solar water heater, there are two indices used worldwide, also relevant in India:

·         Solar Fraction
 ·         Solar Energy Factor: Solar Energy Factor is a mathematic formula to determine the efficiency of the system. It is the result of the division of energy obtained from the solar water heater system by the energy obtained by the electrical, gas or other conventional water heater. The higher the number, the more will be the efficiency of the system. Normally, it ranges from 1 to 11.  If it is 1, it means your solar water heater is performing equivalent to your previously used conventional one while 11 means your solar water heater is 11 times more efficient than the conventional one.
·         Solar Fraction: If you are using a conventional water heater as a backup, solar fraction gives up the value of the solar water heater in your overall obtained heat from the combined system. It ranges from 0 to 1. Normally, it is around 0.5 to 0.8. e.g. 0.5 SF means 50% of your heating demand is fulfilled by the sun.
 While selecting a solar water heater, one must choose a higher efficient one. If you are choosing a combined assembly, put the SF above than 50%.
 Also, the sole consideration of efficiency is not advisable. You must consider the overall cost of the system as well.
 Calculation of annual operational cost:
 Before making the final decision on the type of solar water heating system, you must consider the annual operational cost of the available options and compare them to have a detailed overview. It will help you in the evaluation of annual savings and also determine the payback period. While considering the efficiency, always opt for a lower operational period to minimize the payback period.
 For calculating the annual operational cost, follow these steps:

 2.       If the conventional system is electric geyser: Use this formula:
365 × 12.03 kWh/day ÷ SEF × Electricity Cost (kWh)= estimated annual operating cost saving
This formula is based on taking 250 liter/day as the water requirement.

  11.   How to find out the correct size of the solar water heating system?
The system size solely depends on the type of solar water heater system you have opted and the total requirement of the hot water. Here are the three types of solar water heating system. Follow the steps for sizing the system:
·         Calculate the overall hot water demand.
·         Select the type of system.
·         Find out the cumulative sum of area requirements of all the components.
 Let’s have a look at the sizing of the solar water system on the basis of their type:
Sizing the tankless or direct system: Tankless system or direct system means that the hot water is directly transferred to the end-user without hauling at storage tank. For sizing such system, follow the steps:
·         Find out the flow rate of the hot water application.
For finding this, determine the flow rate at individual outlet points. For example, required flow rate at the taps, showers or another utility point. Find out their algebraic sum.
·         Find out the temperature rise
The temperature rise is the difference of the inlet cold water temperature and required hot water

 Sizing solar water heater system: In this, the overall collector area and storage capacity is calculated to determine the overall size of the system. After calculating the water requirement, follow these steps:
·         Collector Area: For the first two family members, normally a collector area of 20 to 25 square feet is suggested. For every additional member, collector area of approximately 8 to 10 square feet is added to the previous one. It again depends on location and its solar resources.
·         Storage Volume: A storage volume of 150litre is recommended for a small family. It increases with an increase in number of members of family. A medium storage tank of 250 liters is enough for 5 to 7 members.
 Sizing storage or heat pump type solar water heater: If you are thinking of an active solar water heater, calculate the area requirement of heat pumps and other plumbing components.

  13.   Which solar water heater is best?
All are good, depends what you require and need.
 ·         Evacuated tube collector systems are fragile in nature as they contain glass. Thus require smooth handling and care. These systems work satisfactorily in the colder regions even at sub-zero temperatures. If there is much salt content in the water, it gets deposited inside the tube. Therefore, tubes are required to cleansed properly after specific time period.
 ·         Flate Plate Collector system has a longer effective life as they are metallic, but they are expensive than the evacuated tube collector system. If there is much salt content in water, heat exchanger mechanism is required to avoid salt deposition which further adds to the cost of the system.
 ·         Passive solar water heater systems are preferable for small domestic or residential purposes while for larger commercial practices, an active system i.e. systems with additional pump is required.

Disadvantages of the integral collector storage system

 Advantage of Thermosyphon system
 ·         Highly reliable: these types of systems are most widely used because of their reliability, good performance, and efficiency.
·         Cost-effective: Being a passive system, it requires lesser component than the active one. Thus, it is more cost-effective than active systems.
·         Less Maintenance: It involves lesser maintenance and operational cost. Thus, a faster cost breakdown can be achieved.
 Disadvantages of Thermosyphon system
 ·      Freezing point operation: Thermosyphon system doesn’t work properly at the freezing point which makes is unapplicable for cold prone regions. For such locations, additional fluid is required to use either to mix with water or as a collector fluid.
·      Multipurpose uses: For multipurpose use, separate heaters are required which makes it a costlier alternative for multipurpose applications.
 27.   What are the maintenance guidelines of a solar water heater?
 ·      Passive systems require lesser maintenance while the active system needs more. If you are opting for the second category, duly discuss the maintenance and operational guidelines with the service provider and ask for the maintenance manual.
·      Plumbing and other components require the same maintenance as the conventional system.
·      Glazing of the collectors is required to be cleansed in dry climate where rainwater is no option for natural cleansing.
·      Regular maintenance is required every 3-5 years by certified service providers. If your system has electric components, typically in 10 years, you will need to replace the parts.

·         For ETC, glass tubes can break. Therefore, you may have to provide occasional replacement
·         Remove the scaling or deposits regularly. If there is much hardness in the water, acid can be used to clean the collector.

·         Occasional leakages or other issues need to be repaired periodically by local plumber or service providers.

A- Solar Water Heater is a device which provides hot water for bathing, washing, cleaning, etc. using solar energy. It is generally installed at the terrace or where sunlight is available and heats water during day time which is stored in an insulated storage tank for use when required including mornings.

Q- What is the approximate cost of Solar Water Heater?
A- Cost of Solar Water Heater depends on size and type of system installed. Smallest size of a system is 100 liter per day, which means that it can deliver 100 litres of hot water in a day at 60 c. A 150 lpd capacity system is sufficient for a family of 3-4 members and it may cost rs. 15,000 to rs.22,000 in plains depending on the type of system. In hilly & N-E region, the cost may be 15% to 20% more.
The system cost only includes hot water tank and does not include the cost of cold water tank, and its stand which is required if overhead tank is not installed in a house/ building. Cost of hot water insulated pipe line may be extra if number of bathrooms is more than one. additional cost towards all these components may increase by 10 to 20%. The cost, however, does not increase linearly with increase in capacity; rather it comes down proportionately as we go for higher capacity system.
Q- Is there any subsidy available from government?
A- No, the subsidy scheme has been discontinued w.e.f 12.08.2014 onwards.
Q- What happens on cloudy/rainy day? Do i still get hot water?
A- On cloudy days also, if it is for a day or two, you still get warm water as water gets heated due to diffused radiation available in the atmosphere. The system, however, is either connected to an electric geyser in the house or an electrical back-up is provided in the storage tank of the system which is switched on when water is not sufficiently hot. so, you get hot water all the time even on rainy days.
Q- How do i assure that a good quality system is installed at my house?
A- Ministry has laid down some minimum technical requirements for installation of solar water heating systems in the field. These have been made mandatory for manufacturers and suppliers and are available on mnre website: www.mnre.gov.in. These requirements are have been prepared in such a way that even a lay man can also check them and ensure that those are being adhered to by the manufacturers/suppliers. In case any manufacturer is found not sticking to these requirements, he may be blacklisted if informed to the ministry.

Q- Are there any maintenance requirements?
A- Domestic solar water heating system do not need significant maintenance requirements. occasional leakages in the plumbing could be easily repaired by common plumbers. In case quality of water is hard, scale deposition in the collectors may result over the years. this may require de-scaling with acids for which it is best to contact the suppliers. broken glass may also have to be replaced by the suppliers. If outside exposed surfaces are painted, the paint may have to be redone every 2-3 years to prevent corrosion of the surfaces.
