#10040 challenge

I’ve decided to do the [100 Hours in 40 Days Challenge]. To briefly summarise, it’s about dedicating 100 or more hours of language learning in 40 days. I began this challenge on the 21st of August but left it until now to post my introduction.

My goals for this challenge:

1) I listen to a lot of Russian music, but not so much just general speaking. My goal is to listen and read along to multiple audio books during this time period with the intention of improving my connection to how words look and how they sound. I’m also using these books to be expanding my understanding of vocabulary and grammar. Not so much to jump to the level of complete understanding of these books but more to get a better feel for the language in literature. I’m also going to make a lot of use out of Easy Russian and just generally immersing myself in hearing spoken Russian more.

2) I really want to develop my understanding of grammar. I can recognise quite a few words, but my lack of understanding with grammar holds me back a lot and it also means I can’t do much with the vocabulary I have. My tutors are currently going through some grammatical concepts with me but I’d also like to work through grammar exercises myself.

3) I want to complete the Memrise Russian’s 1-3 course. Course 1 and 2 are meant to cover A1 vocabulary (and to some degree some grammar). Here the goal isn’t so much to memorise all of it by heart, but simply to have a lot of exposure to the language (relating to 1). But I do hope to be continually drilling these Memrise levels throughout the 40 days.

4) I really need to improve with Lingvist, and aim to be doing at least 100 cards a day. It’s a good resource that I definitely need to be getting back into the habit of using. It’s definitely the app that helps with memorisation the most for me, but I’m hoping that as I use my other resources more there’s a continual cycle o reinforcement from one app to the next.

5) I really want to finish the Duolingo English to Russian tree and the Russian to English tree. I was pretty far through both of these trees before I reset my progress and kind of fell out of use with Duolingo. I feel like Duolingo works best for me when I use it to drill topics and constructions I struggle with, but I can’t do that when I don’t have the trees completed. 

6) Write in the language more. I definitely haven’t written nearly as much Russian as I should have. At least not when it comes to writing about things that I want to write about. So I’m hoping to at least attempt to write more paragraphs.

Most of these goals are based around improving my listening and my vocabulary and grammar. To some extent by focusing on these I’ll also improve my writing and speaking, although I do have tutors for those specific things so I feel less of a need to explicitly have my own personal goals for these things.

Today, 10.04, is my last day of 3015 challenge, a variation of 10040 challenge.

In total, I've managed to study for a bit more than 30 hours. And there's a couple of things that this challenge really helped me with.

I've finally finished my Pimsleur course which I've been procrastinating on for months, and I have determination to complete other courses available. After all, there isn't too much stuff on Icelandic out there.

It forced me to start building my morning routine, because these days I got the most free time early in the mornings.

It reminded me that some forms of practice, for example, reviewing Anki decks, can happen anywhere, at any time, without taking too much of my mental energy, and still add up to hours.

It showed me that if I complete a course or a program it gives not only the feeling of accomplishment, but also some practical use (who would have thought!).

In conclusion, it was a great challenge. I'm looking forward to studying more, now not pushed by a challenge. I feel motivated and inspired!

100 Hour 40 Day Language Challenge - My Intro

First off, this is @nihowdy‘s challenge, which you can find here and I’ll be following the rules as closely as I can. The only exception is I’m actually going for 40/40 Challenge instead of to 100/40, which will put me at 1hr a day, which for works pretty well for me because I pick up signs fairly quickly in comparison to Spanish.

So as far as where I’m starting from, about a year/year and a 1/2 ago, I was studying ASL religiously. I was nearing fluency, I could have full conversations, with names, locations, ages, small talk, daily routine related phrases, among other things. The things I really struggled with were pairing the signs with facial expressions without feeling stupid, thus slacking off on the facial expressions, and using the right hand, as I always tend to accidentally switch and use my left for signs I need my right for, vice versa. 

After that, things came up, and I pretty much fell completely off track. I can still sign the alphabet, 1-10, a few colors, and a couple other random words, but generally I’ve forgotten the majority of what I learned.

Going into this, I’m hoping to come out having regained some of the knowledge I’d previously learned, and have a better technical understanding, and generally just a wider range.

So today is day 0, however because I know that with all my other current subjects it will be a little tricky to get an hour done every day, I’ll be counting what I do today towards tomorrow, and giving myself a tiny head start.

As nihowdy says to do in her post, I’ll be posting on day 10, 20, 30, and 40. I’ll give little updates in between as frequently as I can as well. Wish me luck!

10040 Challenge // Day 40

Goal: 92:45 /100 hours ; 40/40 days Date: October 28th Tag: #10040 challenge

Wah! it was that super lazy week I had where I didn’t do anything. I should’ve pushed harder these last five days lol. GEEZE only a little over seven hours short. That really really burns. 

Okay so my initial hopes for the end of the challenge were to:

1. have finished reading/listening to In Other Words because I get lazy and don’t read everyday

I did this! I read the last chapter Friday. I feel like I’ve been reading this book for forever. I think I checked it out of the library back in July and renewed it like four times. If it wasn’t for the challenge to keep me focused, I’d probably still be reading it into the new year. 

2. become more comfortable writing (without looking things up so much)

Well I can certainly say I’m more comfortable with writing than I was when I first started out. That isn’t to say I’m any better at it, however. Before, I used to avoid the writing prompts in the edX beginner’s course like the plague and then when I would sit down to write, it’d take me a super long time to do it. With the past two prompts from the intermediate course, I literally just start writing. I think the few free-writing exercises I did helped with this as well. I don’t think as much. I don’t use the dictionary as much, but I still refer to my notes. And I still have plenty of errors.

3. recognize more words/dialogue when watching tv shows/movies

Hah! hahahahahaha! No, seriously. I didn’t watch as many things in Italian as I wanted to. Actually, I barely did. Sometimes with the the Pimsleur program they would give the speaking prompts in Italian. I don’t understand what the man says; the speaking is still too fast. I just wait until they say the answer or repeat the prompt in English. 

 4. understand grammar and sentence structure better

I mean I think I do. What’s still most confusing is passato prossimo vs. imperfetto, of course. And prepositions with cities, nations and places. Oh and the whole essere or avere with passato prossimo. Recently learning reflexive verbs really was an “AHA!” moment for me though. 

FINAL THOUGHTS 💭

I’m grateful for the challenge because I feel like prior to, my studying was all over the place. Besides the edX beginner’s course, nothing was really structured. The challenge helped me make a plan and figure out specific ways to improve all aspects of language learning. I didn’t succeed in doing everything, but I improved in many other areas. I completed Pimsleur Italian 2 and started the first lesson in Italian 3 yesterday. I got through 12 new skills with Duolingo, only have five more skills to complete and reached level 22, woo! I started listening to Italian music and gained a ton of new vocabulary from reading In Altre Parole by Jhumpa Lahiri, which is the first book I have ever read in a language other than English. 

Moving forward, I think I’ll be, more or less, sticking to the study schedule I’ve got going on. Hopefully in about seven weeks I’ll be finishing up the intermediate course from edX and maybe I’ll be starting the reverse tree (Italian>English) on Duolingo.

Starting point: I took Korean classes two and half year ago, but i’ve realized that my Korean knowledge has deteriorated more and more. So i needed to do this challenge to help me enhance my language skills.

I finally understand why the people at my volunteer place were so happy that I learned how to use the register so quickly. I'm with this lady who isn't even that old who cannot figure out the register. It isn't that hard but she's messed up almost every purchase she's done today. It's almost an art. She made it so a customer paid with $10040. I don't know how you can do that.

At least I get to see all the nice cars.

And don't get me wrong. I enjoy working here but it's hard to deal with people who don't understand technology. The register isn't that old nor hard to use.

Note: As my aim is to listen to more spoken Russian, I am including a note of passive listening (where I’m just listening and maybe doing something else rather than say looking at text, making flashcards out of it etc). Although this passive listening does exclude when I listen to Russian music as it’s harder to track. But I will make separate counts for those that would consider this part of the 100 hour total, and those that would not.

My thoughts and reflections

In between trying to find a job, trying to figure out if I can go to Moscow to study or not, my head has just been all over the place. It didn’t help that I was getting so little sleep and feeling the exhaustion preventing me from studying. I was also just generally feeling pretty sick and miserable. In terms of what I set out to do with this, I feel like this week has been very unsuccessful.

With that being said, I definitely feel like I have a better feeling for when I just can’t focus on my work (but can take a break and come back to it) and when I’ve really hit the wall and can’t push myself further. I did have goals for the resources I wanted to use, but generally was finding trying to concentrate on them (or even adapting to other resources) just a little too difficult. I’m hoping that having slightly turned round my sleeping towards the end of these 10 days that I’m in a better position for the next 10. With that being said, I’m also hoping to try and get a full time job where studying Russian on shift won’t be possible. I have to learn to make both compromises with my health and with the world around me.

I suppose I've been quiet here... But that's because I've been busy with the 30 hours in 15 days challenge! Today is the 8th day, exactly in the middle, and so far I must say I'm pretty much happy with where this is going!

I'm currently lagging half an hour behind, but I'll be able to compensate for this as far as I can tell!

Raising kids is not an easy task. It takes constant patients and reinforcing the same thing over and over. The old saying is, it takes a village to raise a child. Parents have to take into consideration that whoever they allow their child around will have a influence on them. My dad always said “pick your friends wisely, you become your environment”. Here is a family that is doing just that! 50 Day Review ❤ Well so far it has been an intense 50 days 😂 Around 2 weeks ago (sadly I didn't write the date down) I completed Chapter 11 and am now waiting for the release of 12.
