Day 12: But You Still Take the Damage @arcvmonth

There are a few running gags or bits both in the show and even in the fanbase that are pretty funny. Yugo's name gag is classic. It does make sense why both Yuto and Shun thought that he was an alley for Academia, but it kept going throughout the rest of the series. That combined with Yugo mistaking Yuzu and Serena for Rin made it clear that he was a lovable goofball, which is still so much different than what I thought Yugo was going to be like when he first appeared in Yuto's flashback. I only managed to see season one of the dub. It isn't the worst dub in the franchise, but I just felt that if I wanted to rewatch Arc V, which of course I do, I'd rather stick to the Japanese version instead of mixing up both versions. That being said, they still had a hard time trying to adapt that running gag with the typical dub dialogue. Sawatari's whole gag of adding to his self-imposed title was also pretty funny. It's perfectly on brand for him and they even kept it up for the last chuck of the series.

Fans really had a fun time with the whole “But you still take damage” bit. It wasn't a running gag exactly, but it happened a lot during the duels throughout the series that fans focused on it. I only lurk around to see some reactions to the series after Arc V since I don't want to get too involved with the fanbase for a lot of reasons, but even when the line comes up in later series, people tend to still bring up Arc V, which is pretty nice.

The crowing fandom joke definitely is Zarcmas though. I was busy spending the holiday with my family, so I didn't see the reactions until late that night. The timing for Zarc's revival was pretty hilarious in a way. Zarc had been revived, we didn't know what happened to the Bracelet Girls yet, the four Dimensions were becoming one and all of the characters were in danger. What a way to start off Christmas Day and fans just jumped on it by coining the term Zarcmas. I love Zarc, so the fact that fans often still bring up Zarcmas every year for the holidays is pretty great too.

i am already starting to feel the itch to finally write the last arc of that one night again, as soon as i finish the glorious, heart-consuming, soul-satisfying jelsa collab project with the gorgeously talented @callimara. ✨ and how beautiful it will be to finish this fic the same year as when i, personally, defend my dissertation???

could i have known back in 2012 that i would one day be wrapping up this mammoth of a fic 12 or so years later while finishing my own ph.d. program? (definitely low-key manifested my doctorate through this fic, i tell you 😂)

like at the center, it started as a series of micro-fic/drabbles/one-shots/single scenes occurring within the same AU! at that time in my life when i was first posting, i was wrapping up my undergrad, and transitioning to full-time work, so i didn't have a lot of time to write full-scale, plot-driven long!fic; however, in undergrad, i learned a very valuable lesson while attending one of our professional development trainings, which really proved to me the necessity of allowing myself time to dabble in creative hobbies like writing, even if i could only produce a little bit every day.

quick reminder and anecdote to PRIORITIZE and KEEP UP with your hobbies for your mental health (and the exact moment, 13 years ago, when i realized how truly important this really is):

at the life-changing professional development training, we learned strategies and framework-driven ideologies for how to spot concerns re: our residents' mental health, especially with the first-year college students who were in my building. at one point, the lecturer pointed out a fact that really resonated with me, based on my first three years of my undergrad:

in many cases, when a person moves to a new environment (new "life" or "lifestyle"), as is the case with many young adults moving to an independent college-based lifestyle and being on their "own" completely for the first time, the first things that "drop" from people's minds/behaviors/habits/lifestyles are their hobbies, especially if individuals associate their hobbies as part of their "old" lives or their "younger" selves.

i sat in the audience, totally shocked. "that's me??"

my middle/high school friends and i had been writing handwritten fanfiction to each other on fancy paper for christmas and birthdays for years (i still have all of them!!). i had written from age 11 to age 18 and then when i got to college i got so caught up in the "college life" (social life, academic work, parties, NEW hobbies), that i completely........ let go of writing creatively...... i hadn't even thought of fic in months.

that night, after the workshop, i went home and opened up FFNET for the first time in 3 years, and i read until like 3 in the morning. three months later, i got a comment on an OLD harry potter fic asking if i would ever update, and i posted a new chapter a few weeks later. 💕 and i have not stopped since! 😂

so the reason that stories like that one night and at the center exist is because i was trying my best to take the lesson to heart, to make sure i was always writing a little bit, all the time, (almost) every day. i started with an AU premise, i opened my tumblr askbox for prompts (in the case of that one night), i let myself imagine what kinds of scenarios could happen in this AU at this stage in the characters' development, and i thought of all the connections i could make between various characters/canon plot points/rapport-building between characters/backstories, and i wrote a little bit every day before and after work, and posted them pretty much immediately. 😂

the problem with cool thing about this kind of thought experiment, however, is that you end up accidentally creating rich, full, detailed mental landscapes and emotional contexts and goals and hopes and fears for the characters in them, and then before you know it a plot develops (and 14 more wild sub-plots appear!!!) and you're suddenly 100k 200k 300k words deep into the lives that you've constructed for these characters. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 and now you've accidentally created a full-length, long!fic over the past decade, with extensively detailed slice-of-life!worldbuilding by accident!

why do you ship tahno/korra? (post from may 10, 2013!!)

i also ship other ships in lok (including korra/asami!) but tahnorra has always always had a special place in my heart! as you'll see in the post, i have always really loved this kind of character, characters like tahno are SO interesting to me, and i always love to think about their backgrounds, the ways and whys of and hows of who they are. i was really drawn to this ship even when they were "evenly-matched" (@evenly-matched) rivals, and then once he lost his bending i wanted to explore the idea of a proper redemption arc/personal growth in tahno. 🙏 and then after i got to know their characters better (i.e., my interpretations of them) from writing the break the ice series, i decided that it would be fun to get to know them in a context that i, myself, was hoping to explore in my real life. 😂 i started to write that one night when grad school (master's degree) was just a goal on my radar! i continued writing it while i got my first master's degree, and, although i'd known for 10+ years that i would one day get a PhD, i never actually expected to be completing the fic the same year (and getting tahno to get his bio swamp phd 😂) the same year that i would get my phd. 😂💕

this summer, i have really been grateful to make money, work on my fun projects, be grateful for the ins and outs of learning to be a homeowner, spending time with family and friends, and reflecting on the past four years of my phd program, and the year ahead. 🥹 it's been a calm summer! i was really leaning into this 'calm before the storm' and i'm so ready to get back into the swing of academia and finally complete this beautiful doctoral program experience and finally finish half a decade's (and more, honestly) worth of hard work. 🥹💕

i actually really like peter capaldi as the doctor. i did watch his run all at once in 2016 or 2017, not as it aired, and i don't remember having very strong feelings about it. i think i was just checked out and not invested anymore. coming back to 12 now during this rewatch has made me appreciate capaldi a lot more. i watched "heaven sent" last night, and it is genuinely GREAT, and that is because it is 100% capaldi just giving it. he has a very different energy from 9-11, but it works so well. it helps that moffat is a little less moffaty in the material at this point.

unfortunately for 12, i can't stand clara. nothing against jenna coleman, i'm sure she's lovely, but two and a half seasons of clara was painful. can i tell you anything about her character arc? her wants vs needs? anything at all about her life? no. i can't. because none of that showed up at any point over the course of her THIRTY-SEVEN episodes.

now i have made it past the Clara Era, it is time to watch some christmas specials i've never seen before & revisit BILL, who i remember being great. and then capaldi's final episode, which i also never got around to watching. i may actually catch up with 13 as well before the 60th anniversary, which is pretty wild. it's taken me like two months to get this far. i will never attempt this again.

It's unlike any Danganronpa characters are going to appear in the show for a while since I don't really see Monokuma V Korosensei making it to the end.

//And to be frank, everyone's power level is a bit different (most of the time greater) in Survivor's canon. Especially the likes of Makoto and Kaede, who in the main series can barely lift 5 pounds.

//So for this year's festive event, I'm doing a full crossover and bringing characters from DR Survivor in a Death Battle format, where I'll pit them against opponents from other media outlets, and see how their skills size up in greater media canon.

//I will confess, this is very self-indulgent, but I like to have fun with this blog every end of year. And as it so happens, I'm going to let YOU guys choose the opponents.

//This is actually pretty in depth, so I'll lay out all the details under the cut. It's very important you read this, because this arc rides on you guys feedback, so I'm counting on you.

1 - Your votes will determine the matchups.

//I will be the one who chooses which characters from the blog get thrown into the ring, but I will be making weekly polls featuring a list of at least 5 potential combatants. Whichever one gets the most votes will be the one I pit against them.

//Which is why it's imperative you guys vote on this. Like I said, I'm counting on you. Participation is not necessary, but it is very much desired.

//If a character from the blog is not chosen in any of the matchups, don't worry. I will most assuredly do this event again should it turn out to be successful, and any characters I missed then will be run next time.

2 - This is unnofficial.

//It goes without saying but I'm not sponsored or licensed by Death Battle in any way, and I have no intention of capitalizing off their brand. This is just for funsies.

//It's also important to bare in mind that while I plan on having some of my friends help me with this, I'm not as capable of the same math as Wiz and Boomstick. So if I make any mistakes with the calculations, try not to hold it against me.

3 - This will take a different post format, and won't feature sprites.

//The idea I have in mind for the arc is to have two characters from the blog, those being Hifumi Yamada and Leona Vasquez, take the place of the Death Battle hosts, Wiz and Boomstick, to discuss the matchups and calculations.

//But considering this features characters from outside the blog, as well as how it will definitely fuck up the daily image limit with this website, I've decided, unlike the last few years, not to employ the use of sprites this time. Instead, the discussions and calculations will be done in script format, like those you see on the DB Fanon wiki.

//There will still be images, like charts and source images, and for the fights itself I plan on drawing my own artwork for some of the scenes. But no sprites or expressions like my usual post

4 - The Danganronpa characters will be in Survivor Canon specifically.

//This also goes without saying. For this series, I will take the characters exploits from the main series into account, but will mainly be focusing on their exploits from Survivor's continuity.

//It will take into accounts plot points like Kaede's fight against the Exisal's, Makoto's battles against Mr Kuma and Yukari Koime, Hajime's confrontations and fights with both Nagito and Ayumu, and lots more.

//Also, these are PHYSICAL BATTLES. Not mental debates like the main series is known for. We will be fighting with fists, not words or bullets of truth.

5 - It's up for debate whether these matchups will be featured on Tumblr.

//Honestly, Tumblr posts have a tendency to spaz out when they're very long, so I might post the official matchups on other websites like DeviantArt or WattPad, or somewhere else.

//I'm saying this now because I haven't decided yet, and if that does turn out to be the case, at least you were given advanced warning.

//For now, that's all we need to know, and the reason why I'm announcing this now is because I will need time to prepare the scripts and set up the fights.

//And this time, I'm really hoping not to cut right in the middle of the current arc so that I may do this one. I'm hoping to get what I'm writing now finished by that time, while also putting my efforts into PToH and the next part of ReCaptured.

The Toonami Trending Rundown for November 2023. After two years of being stuck in “Crunchyroll Jail”, Demon Slayer has finally returned to the better cartoon show to premiere the highly acclaimed Mugen Train arc. And it’s not alone, as Dr. Stone has also returned to resume the second half of the 3rd season, the New World, while IGPX returns to the lineup for the first time in 10 years, as Discotek releases an HD Remaster of Toonami’s first original series.

November 4-5 was a post-Halloween marathon night, as Toonami re-aired Part 1 of Attack on Titan: The Final Chapters, in addition to the first two episodes of IGPX due to the extra hour the block got due to the end of Daylight Savings. In terms of trending, both shows trended in the USA, although the former got some assistance as Part 2 was just released in Japan and on simulcasting. For the night of November 11-12, the premiere night of Demon Slayer and Dr. Stone, #Toonami trended in the USA alongside Demon Slayer and Dr. Stone. #Toonami also trended on Tumblr alongside Demon Slayer and One Piece. On November 18-19, #Toonami trended in the USA on Twitter and on Tumblr, while Demon Slayer and Dr. Stone both trended in the US. And on November 25-26, #Toonami trended in the USA alongside Dr. Stone and IGPX.

The feature for November 11 was a new ID bump made by The Foreign Correspondents' Club. You can check it out below.

The feature for November 18 was a game review of Sea of Stars, a role-playing video game by Sabotage Studio that is available on modern platforms. TOM and SARA have called it a modern-day rendition of the classic Chrono Trigger video game.

And for November 25, Toonami aired another new ID bump featuring TOM and SARA trying out an explosive new weapon, this time from MoreFrames AnimationCo.

With Demon Slayer finally back on the lineup, Toonami has plenty of Demon Slayer to catch up on. Demon Slayer’s Mugen Train arc is only 7 episodes long, given it’s a TV version of the hit Mugen Train film. But there is also the Entertainment District Arc, which will be an addition 11 episodes in length to complete season 2. Followed by the 11-episode Swordsmith Village Arc that makes up season 3. During the Aniplex panel on Saturday morning at Anime NYC, it was announced that the Entertainment District Arc will also be making its way to Toonami on January 13, following the completion of Mugen Train.

Demon Slayer fans will have plenty more to celebrate in the future, as the official Kimetsu no Yaiba Japanese website has already confirmed that a fourth season is in production, to cover the Hashira Training arc. Additional details are to be revealed on December 10.

When it rains, it pours, and with Toonami rekindling relationships with Aniplex (and potentially all of Sony-Crunchyroll LLC), Aniplex USA has announced on Friday at Anime NYC this weekend that a second show is also on the way for the better cartoon show. Lycoris Recoil, an original anime series directed by Shingo Adachi, the character designer and chief animation director of Sword Art Online, will be joining the Toonami lineup on January 20, as the first new acquisition in the 2024 calendar year.

Luffy from One Piece made his debut on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade this year, as he had his own float parading down the streets of New York City for the very first time. Anime was well represented, as he was joined by a Goku float from Dragon Ball Super, as well as a Christmas themed Pikachu and Eevee float from Pokémon. Unfortunately, Luffy’s hat would deflate after it got snagged by a tree branch due to strong winds in the area. The float was still able to fly and would later be showcased on the NBC broadcast, albeit with Luffy’s straw-hat looking like a bucket hat as a result of the tear and partial deflation.

Finally, Toonami has announced marathon nights for Christmas and New Year’s as the block winds down with the year coming to a close. For Christmas week on December 23, Toonami will air all 7 episodes of Dr. Stone: New World Part 2 it has aired to that point from Midnight to 3:30 a.m. EST. While for New Year’s week on December 30, Toonami will air all 7 episodes of Demon Slayer’s Mugen Train arc from midnight to 3:30 a.m.

Wow, so Lent is over now, so my tumblr fast is also over and I'm still a little in shock, lol. I had hoped the past six weeks? My wifi wasn’t totally working last night so I missed about 15 minutes of the svu episode. And tbh because over on Twitter everything was negative and my wifi situation being so frustrating I think I made too many snap judgements about the ep. Now that I’ve come over here and have you doing what you do best aka making my brain think with different lenses about different scenes and character interactions I def like what I saw of it a lot better! When I rewatch I’ll be like see now Leah’s perspective was this and think about it that way. Sometimes snap judgements come from confusion as well I think…

Thank you so much for this!!! The morning after dissections we do here are so important for me bc we move through forming opinions in stages. Our knee jerk responses don't always hold up as we discuss and consider and review and that's true of all of us, and it's ok!!! An evolving perspective based on developing information is healthy. We should all allow ourselves the grace to process things and change our minds. I've been thinking about this all day and turning over everything everyone is saying in my head like a rotisserie chicken.

One thing I wanna mention is that this is the start of an arc. And for the first time in a very long while we have a writing team that appears interested in consistency and following up on the threads they've woven into earlier episodes. Olivia didn't solve anything in the Bronx bc she's just getting started, she'll be there for two more episodes. Elliot wasn't there in this episode (spoilers look away if you don't want) but we know he's gonna be there in episode 12. Noah was unintentionally cruel to his mother at Christmas but last night we saw him telling her he loves her and that he wants to stay with her - what do you want to bet the Noah arc this season culminates with him making it clear she is the mother he wants? Olivia has been hurt - tho not nearly as badly as we thought she was gonna be based on the promos - and we actually get to see her react to that, and it feels like she is gonna dig deeper into her trauma before she finds her way out.

This is cohesive, long form storytelling and I love that. No, every question doesn't get answered right away, it's unfolding across multiple episodes. That's a good thing. It's something we've been missing, as we've spent much of the last few seasons begging for some fucking follow up on literally anything. We have been trained not to trust that they're gonna follow thru bc they didn't, but the new leadership is making itself known and I have faith.

Overview: My foray into holiday romance continues with this collection of 4 novellas written by some heavy-hitters in the romance world. Because this is an anthology, my review will be structured a little different than normal.

"Meet Me in Mayfair” by Tessa Dare

"Meet Me in Mayfair" follows Louisa Ward, the eldest daughter of the Ward family. The Wards have been living in their London home for more than a decade after borrowing money from the Duke of Thorndale. Their father's friendship with the duke has meant that the debt has been forgiven, but when the Duke dies, the new Duke calls in the debt (plus interest). To keep their home past New Year's, Louisa must marry a wealthy gentleman, but when she stumbles into that very Duke - James - at a Christmas ball and he takes a liking to her, things get... complicated, to say the least.

What I liked about this story was the appropriate pace and scope. Dare didn't go for a whirlwind romance with improbable outcomes, but kept the focus on the scope of one night. As a result, this story felt more emotionally and mentally intimate, and the small, "mundane" moments felt heavier and more important than bigger shows of love or attraction. The only thing I didn't like was the epilogue; I felt like the story ended in a natural place at the close of the last chapter, and the epilogue felt inserted in order to bring some hot, sexy times to a story that frankly didn't really need it. Still, this story was a pleasant read with a couple that had a relationship built on mutual respect, and I enjoyed the experience.

"The Duke of Christmas Present” by Sarah MacLean

This story follows Eben, Duke of Allryd, who is awakened in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve by Jaqueline "Jack" Mosby. Jack is Eben's childhood friend (and later lover) who left him and disappeared for 12 years; now, she has come back for a mere 2 days - to spend Christnas with him before she leaves for Scotland. Eben is too hurt to want anything to do with her, but when a massive snowstorm prevents either of them from leaving the house, they confront must their pasts and examine their feelings towards one another.

This story was a very angsty romance that didn't go too far into sad boy territory. The 12 year absence meant that the angst felt well-earned, and I liked that MacLean didn't push it aside too readily. I also think that MacLean did a good job flashing between past and present, which helped give depth to the couple's past and emotions, and Eben's arc had some nice development. The side characters were also pretty fun, and I don't think I can identify much that I thought could be improved.

"Heiress Alone" by Sophie Jordan

This story follows Annis, the second eldest daughter of the Ballister family. When her parents and 4 boisterous sisters accidentally leave her behind in the Scottish Highlands, Annis is left to spend the winter in the company of her two elderly servants and her neighbor - the surly Duke of Sinclair.

This is my first time reading a Sophie Jordan story, and unfortunately, it wasn't to my taste. For one thing, the Duke embodied all the stereotypes I dislike most about Highlander romance heroes - bad Scots dialect, random antagonism with the English, and a bossy, grumpy demeanor that made me wonder why the heroine found him attractive. The romance also didn't feel very organic, and it was based more on physical attraction than emotional intimacy. If you like old school romances where the hero and heroine are thrown together in scenarios where sexual tension is palpable, you might like this story. But personally, I found it dull.

"Christmas in Central Park" by Joanna Shupe

Rose Walker is a popular advice columnist for a New York City newspaper, posing as a wealthy married woman and dispensing tips for cleaning, baking, decorating, and all sorts of household improvements. But when the owner of the paper - Duke Havermeyer - insists that she host a Christmas party at her home to charm the paper's board of trustees, she must pull off the ultimate deception in order to keep her job.

I'm off mixed opinions regarding this story. I really enjoyed the premise, and I think Shupe did a good job setting up the stakes. However, I also think this story would have worked better as a full length novel. There were a lot of themes and emotions to unpack, and while the pace wasn't bad, I also felt like I needed more time to process all that was going on. The extra time would have also allowed Shupe to show rather than tell a bit more, but even so, this was an interesting story and I liked the ideas she was playing with.

TL;DR: In my opinion, three out of the four novellas make this collection a worthwhile read. While I could nitpick each of the stories, they are light and enjoyable enough for the holidays, and I would recommend this set to any historical romance reader.
