Dun-dun,dun-dun,DUN-DUN!!
Tumblr media
It's that glorious time of year again folks; SHARKFEST! When National Geographic basically lets sharks take over its programming for an entire month. And in celebration, here are some shark inspired drinks.
Mix #31 Shark Bite
3/4oz spiced rum 3/4oz white rum 1.5oz sweet & sour mix 1/2oz blue curacao tsp grenadine
Shake everything except grenadine and pour into glass. Drip grenadine over top.
This can be found on different places on the web. In every case, their pictures look way better than mine:
Tumblr media
If I really wanted this to look cool,I would've blended it and used fassionola. But the important thing is the taste, and it's not that good. Even after the grenadine mixes in,it's too sour. If I had blended and used like half an ounce of fassionola it would have not only looked better, but probably tasted better. But I just don't see me making another one.
Mix #32 Shark's Tooth
1.5oz gold rum 1/2oz pineapple juice 1/2oz lime juice 1/2oz Demerara syrup 1/4oz grenadine
Shake everything with ice.
So I've no idea what this drink has to do with sharks, but it is tasty. Don the Beachcomber made the original with more rum and cherry syrup instead of grenadine, but I'm pretty happy with this one.
Tumblr media
Mix #33 Megalodon
1oz Lemon Hart 151 1oz white rum 1.25oz lime juice 1oz agave syrup 1tsp red fassionola
Blend with a cup of ice for 5sec.
The Meg was a huge, scary, prehistoric shark. This drink is every bit as cool looking, powerful, and sneaky as its namesake. With a full ounce of 151 it's got punch, but the smoothness of the Demerara Lemon Hart combined with the sweetness of the agave and fassionola mean you won't feel it until it's too late. I found this recipe on Drunken Tiki, but apparently their site is down. They are still up on Facebook if you want to check them out. This is a really good drink, and you definitely want to limit yourself to two so as to be able to stay in the lifeboat and stave off a next-day hangover.
And I'll end this post with my favorite pop-culture mug. The swizzle totally completes it.
Tumblr media
Have fun in the water this summer folks!

Ok. I need your mixed drink wizardry once again. I need a cocktail for Muriel Aslany, the anger-ball with trust issues who weaponizes paper umbrellas. She'd go for something with just enough class and just enough fruit that someone might raise an eyebrow, but would want it strong and mean. The drink, of course, requires a paper umbrella.
Aight so we're gonna drop some tiki cocktail tech on @swaps55
First, a disclaimer! I am not an expert on tiki drinks. I haven't practiced nearly as many of them. I've sat on this one for a couple of days trying to sort out my thoughts on this one.
The drink I'd want Aslany to drink is terribly impractical assuming the constraints of space travel/agriculture. Here we go anyway!
Chief Lapu Lapu:
This cocktail is served in a hollowed out pineapple and features a blend of light and dark rum, lemon and orange juice, grenadine and simple syrup. Served, of course, with a little umbrella! It relies on balancing ingredients, and I honestly would have trust issues with this even at a dedicated tiki bar. The trick here for someone like Aslany is to request it made with 151, or overproofed rum. There are light and dark variations of 151 proof rums, and personally I'm personally partial to Plantation's O.F.T.D. 151 dark rum (I actually repurpose it to make my own coffee liquor, but that's a different post...) and there are plenty of silver 151 options available on the market.
I should point out that I want Aslany to order this because I just love the idea of Muriel walking around with a full pineapple in hand.
And now, for what Muriel Aslany would probably actually order!
151 Swizzle:
Crushed Ice, lime juice, Pernod (or other anisette I suppose), Angostura bitters, simple syrup, a dash of cinammon... But what gives the cocktail its name, and its signature kick, is Lemon Hart 151 demerara rum (though I've seen recipes that call for El Dorado 151.) after the cocktail is built in the tin cup, it is deliberately topped with more 151 proof rum to ensure the first few sips will sucker punch you straight into a - hopefully pleasant - buzz. This is easier to conscience for off-earth consumption because it doesn't require any fresh fruit (although fresh squeezed juice is ALWAYS better) and because it doesn't require Aslany to make any modifications to the recipe. Less likely to confuse bartenders, and more reliable no matter where an alliance jar-head finds themself.
Some notes before I drop my recipes for the peanut gallery to test at home!
One hundred and fifty one proof rum, 151, is a high enough alcohol content to be lit on fire (it's usually the secret behind flaming shots) and will knock you on your ass. Proceed with caution, it will burn out your tastebuds and overwhelm most anything.
For tiki cocktails in general, I highly recommend looking for some pot-stilled rum. As weird as it sounds, the funkier the better. This is because tiki cocktails play with huge, bright, intense flavors and you need to balance them with that in mind. Big, bombastic flavors are needed to combat the falernum, orgeat, grenadine, fresh citrus/pineapple/coconut, and anisettes like Pernod that are often found in this genre. Everyone's tastes will be different, but I encourage you to use rums that you wouldn't drink on their own for your tiki cocktail creations. Put it this way, I wouldn't put my friendliest aged rum in a tiki cocktail. Save that for neat or rocks sipping, or as a substitute for brandy/cognac whiskey/scotch in other drink recipes. This does mean my suggestions may not be your favorites, feel free to experiment!
Aslany's Lapu Lapu
1.5 oz Bacardi 151 or Rum Fire 1.5 oz Lemon Hart 151 or Plantation O.F.T.D. 2.5 oz Orange Juice 2 oz Lemon Juice 1 oz Simple Syrup or Gomme Syrup 0.75 oz Grenadine (use real pomegranate grenadine!!!!!) Shake in tin with ice, then strain into a hollowed out pineapple. Serve with a straw, and garnish with your umbrella (your choice of color, I recommend a light blue or something between red-pink for contrast with your pineapple.)
I'd recommend Bacardi 151 with Plantation or Rum Fire with Lemon Hart, but hey try any combination of dark and light 151 rums you can get your hands on!
151 Swizzle
1 cup Crushed Ice. (Crush it yourself in a cloth bag if you have to! You want this finely crushed.) 1 oz (fresh!) Lime Juice (I want to try 1 oz lime and 0.5 oz lemon on a hunch but haven't gotten around to it yet) 1 oz Simple Syrup (try Demerara? Seems like it would be better) 1 barspoon or 0.33 oz Pernod 1 dash Angostura bitters 1.5 oz Lemon Hart 151
to top:
0.25 oz Lemon Hart 151 dash of cinnamon
build in your collins glass. Stir til frosty, then top with the remaining rum and cinammon. Serve with a straw and an umbrella again, color your choice ;) gonna tag @ferusaurelius and @pigeontheoneandonly again because cocktails.

Times Like This (Top Gun: Maverick: Bradley Bradshaw)
Tumblr media
ok forgive me! i’ve been in a t-swizzle mood so every song i hear inspires me to write something for you guys. This is a short one, which I usually have problems writing cause I never know when to stop, so hope you like it! :))
summary: female reader (she/her) x Bradley Bradshaw Being with Rooster was never going to be easy. As you both were pilots you understood the danger that surrounded your job, but somehow he always made it seem like it was life or death. With him, you never knew if he was going to come back, and sometimes you weren’t sure if you wanted to deal with the back and forth, the up and down. It was all just too much. Not to mention that you weren’t officially together… notes/warnings: angst? word count: 406
It was times like this when it felt like being in love with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw would kill you. Felt even more dangerous than the years you spent assigned to strike fighter squadron VFA-151 Vigilantes with Hangman.
You knew the risks that your job entailed; you were both great pilots who risked your lives every day. But something about having someone you could lose was even harder.
As training for this special detachment seemed to get even more mentally and physically demanding, the only comfort that could be found was within your teammates. They were the only ones that truly knew what you were going through.
Everything with Bradley was so easy, it started off with casual hook-ups. Just moments to let the frustration out.
But as time passed, it felt like so much more. Bradley knew you on a level that no one else had even came close to.
You used to joke that you’d die for him, not realizing how much it meant for him to say he’d do the same for you.
Everyone warned you, they said the road gets hard and we’d get lost if we were led by blind faith.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
After a particularly rough day where he nearly killed himself and Maverick in training by breaking the hard deck and barreling towards the ground in his plane is when you really felt your heart hurt.
You almost lost him, and if it wasn’t because of training it would be because of this mission.
He couldn’t exactly talk to you when you got like this.
A screaming match about how stupid and careless he was being, pushing and shoving him against the door while you stabbed your finger in his chest before you could do anything but cry as he held you.
And he would hold you so tightly that you could barely breathe, but it felt like Heaven.
Whispering “What would you do if I just left like that?”
He would move your head from his chest, using his thumb to ghost over your lips.
All it took was the one touch and he’d have you crumbling before him.
He could make everything better with his touch, all the displaced anger and frustration would melt away.
You loved him, so deeply it hurt.
You weren’t prepared for what this mission would bring, and it terrified you to think about it.
Regardless, you were prepared to worship this love.
a/n: If you like my work please support by liking/reblogging. Also, feel free to message me about ideas. I haven’t written in a while because I don’t have a lot of time, but when inspiration hits i’ll sit down for hours

“Duct tape fixes everything. Except marriages. And broken homes.” (Eliot)

Swizzle stick swirls inside the glass half full (optimism in alcohol form?!) of nearly glowing topaz blue.  Pineapple half stained green wedged between the glass and the ice.  If she was going to try and swallow a few of her worries away, she’d at least bring in the beginning of summer and get the rest of her day under wraps festively?  With as much of a beach side drink she was gonna get in the middle of the Village.
The lament of many a day/early evening drinker.  Seems she’s found company though.
A light laugh as she hooks the heel of her boot into the rung of the stool and relaxes back.  “True.  Thank god I don’t have either one of those on my list.  Just a bad day and an a shitty attitude I need to self adjust.  Or drown in blue curacao, pineapple juice and 151,” then under her breath, “shit if I can figure out what else is in here punching me in the face though.”  Gray blue eyes squint into the drink and she throws the idea of figuring it out right into the overflowing trashcan underneath the bar.
“What are you drinking?  Think we both need a refill.  I owe you one for that piece of advice.”

False Idol
This is False Idol in Little Italy, San Diego. The brain-child of Anthony Schmidt (beverage director) and Martin Cate, of Smuggler's Cove fame in San Francisco, opened on September 2nd to a full house (and booked out since btw). False Idol is a mesmerising homage to Tiki and it's “false history”. The list contains some Tiki Gods (Trader Vic's Mai Tai), some California Gods (Marcovaldi Dionysos' Chartreuse Swizzle) and a few that will singe your vocal chords and have you forgetting your native language after a few sips like, my first tipple, the 151 Swizzle.
One drink in particular drew my immediate attention: The Pearl Diver. Upon inquiring about one of the ingredients, Don’s Gardenia Mix, to my friend Erick Castro (Polite Proviosion, San Diego) the explanation made me realize I really was back in SoCal.
"So some guy, fuckin' crazy guy figured out a way to stabilize butter with water using this TIC Gum".
To get the feel for this think Keanu Reeves in Point Break meets Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting.
That guy was Dave Arnold by the way and I’ve found references to his experimentation in the field of emulsification dating back to 2009 so this isn’t exactly new. A few years ago I attempted to stabilise a Hollandaise using gum arabic and then xanthan, both of which after numerous attempts failed. Ticaloid 210S is blend of both gums so apparently I was on the right track. It’s available online or if you can’t wait and have a set of precision scales you can find the ratio online, with a little scouring, and you can blend them yourself.
The rest of the ingredients included two aged rums and a blend of orange and spiced bitters. It was served over ice with an edible pink orchid. It's at this moment I must point out the difference between edible and non-toxic; don't eat the orchid. The texture was amazing, with a softness without being at all creamy. The butter flavour was pronounced and forward; this is a great drink. It’s places like this that make it great to be back in the land of sun.

This past weekend I saw the full length of the island: from Somerset down in the South (or “East End”) all the way up to St Georges in the North (“West End”) via a trip down to the Crystal Caves, trying rum swizzle at the eponymous “Swizzle Inn” and exploring NASA’s abandoned research station at Cooper’s island.
I’ve learned a lot about the history of Bermuda. The people here were essentially pirates who relied on the laws of salvage to go and “rescue” (loot) wrecks and would then smuggle any treasures from the British monarchy. There are still archaic laws about the waterline and what belongs to the Crown. Even the churches were designed so that the relevant preacher/vicar/priest (honestly I don’t know which is applicable) could keep one eye on the sea whilst at the pulpit. One can only assume that if a wreck was spotted it was see ya later prayer and all hands on deck to purloin and pilfer the good stuff.
The rum swizzle is Bermuda’s national drink. It was invented at the Swizzle Inn and is made up of about 7 different Gosling rums, pineapple juice, orange juice and grenadine. Everyone has their own preferred swizzle recipe, with some being more authentic than others. I’m told that one of the rums is Gosling 151 proof rum (which is actually 140 proof at the airpot because the airlines won’t allow 151 proof on the plane). Allegedly the reason it’s called “proof” is because the sailors used to test their rum ration by setting it on fire. If it caught flame this was “proof” it wasn’t overly diluted: if there was too much water in with rum it wouldn’t light and they’d know they were being duped. This might be complete bullshit, but it sounds cool.
The caves were absolutely amazing. Two teenagers playing cricket in 1907 discovered them. It takes literally millions of years for the salt stalagmites to form and they are each very beautiful and unique. It was me and two other families. Each little family would take turns at each photo op and the guide would take a photo. They would then look at me as if to say “do you really need one?” Answer: hells yeah.
My only other insights are that I have noticed that nearly everyone has a Helly Hansen jacket. I don’t know if it’s to do with what’s in fashion, practicality (keeps you cosy on the scooter) or whether they are the only jackets actually available. Perhaps it’s all 3.  It’s truly astounding: the trademark “HH” is everywhere. I’ve also upgraded my TV viewing to season 2 of Sex Education- “wash your hands, you detty pig.”

(Dark) Rum Swizzle
You could do this drink in the way that the vodka cocktail was intended, an easy way to make orange juice alcoholic. But a dark rum Screwdriver means that you have the option to taste something great. Pusser's Navy Rum is probably the best choice because its funky flavor will stand out. I used a mix of Dark rum and 151-proof rum just so that I wouldn't be wasting as much of my good dark rum in an orange juice drink.
2 oz. dark rum (Pusser's and Cruzan 151 used)
Orange Juice
Build drink in a Collins glass with rum and ice. Top with orange juice and stir.
