#NeverForget #Cynthia Wesley #CaroleRobertson #AddieMaeCollins (all 14 years old), and 11-year-old #DeniseMcNair - The four girls murdered in the #16thStreetBaptistChurchBombing 60 years ago today (Sept. 15, 1963) in Birmingham, Alabama. The heinous act of white supremacist domestic terrorism was carried out soon after the 1963 #MarchonWashington for Jobs and Freedom (Aug. 28, 1963.)
#SarahCollinsRudolph was severely injured in the bombing and two Black boys were murdered that same day in Birmingham: 16-year-old #JohnnyRobinson and 13-year-old #VirgilWare.

Video and caption reposted from @nmaahc #OnThisDay in 1963, a bomb planted by the Ku Klux Klan ripped through the 16th Street Baptist Church, in Birmingham, Alabama, killing 4 little girls—11-year-old Carol Denise McNair, and 14-year-olds Carole Robertson, Cynthia Diane Wesley and Addie Mae Collins—and injuring several others.
This atrocity marked the third bombing in 11 days in Birmingham, Alabama, following the federal court order integrating Alabama schools. Shards from the church's stained-glass window are on display in our exhibition "Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom: The Era of Segregation" as a reminder of this tragic incident.
Racially motivated attacks on Black people, their homes and their churches grew so common that the city was referred to as “Bombingham.” African American civil rights activists made Birmingham a focal point of their desegregation campaign.

We will never forget the bombing at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, on this date September 15, 1963.
From left to right:
Addie Mae Collins, 14.
Carole Robertson, 14.
Cynthia Wesley, 14.
Denise McNair 11.
A bomb planted by Ku Klux Klan members ripped through a Birmingham church, killing four little girls as they prepared for Sunday services.
The FBI determined that four members of a local KKK klavern known as the "Cahaba River Bridge Boys" were responsible for the bombing. The first prosecution didn't come until 1977. Then two more in the early 2000s. The fourth killer died, never being brought to account.

As we remember the loss of the 4 Little Girls today, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the fifth little girl my friend, Sarah Collins Rudolph, the sister of Addie Mae Collins who survived the bombing. Mrs. Collins Rudolph was in the bathroom with Addie Mae when the bomb exploded in the 16th Street Baptist Church. She lost her right eye and was hospitalized for two months after the bombing forcing her to miss her sister's funeral. I ask that everyone please remember this historic day and lift Mrs. Collins Rudolph and the families of the victims in prayer. #16thstreetBaptistchurch #4littlegirls #alabama #survivor #the5thlittlegirl #civilrightshero https://www.instagram.com/p/B2ci2VIlMH8/?igshid=5jne7ia2ew3d

#Spaces - There are spaces that are hidden but nevertheless necessary. These spaces must be sought out, engaged, loved and made to feel appreciated. This in turn will birth more spaces that turn into community. I went in @thecoloredgirlsmuseum today hoping to catch a tour, instead I gained a lesson in history, presence, subtlety and love. . Thank you so much Vashti for taking time out of your day to welcome me into the space. Can’t wait to help with whatever you guys should need. @mclemmons_art your piece on the 4 colored girls from the #16thStreetBaptistChurch is breathtaking and moving. 🙌 . #ArtAboveReality #LookWhatArtFound #Inspiring #Art #Curator #ContemporaryArt #CollectingArt #FineArt #ArtMarket #ContemporaryPainting #CollectArt #ContemporaryArtCollectors #LiveWithArt #ArtConsultant #TheColoredGirlsMuseum #BlackWomen #Philadelphia (at The Colored Girls Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpmxhwLn1hy/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1uslr0mmnrk5h

On September 15, 1963, #AddieMaeCollins, #CarolDeniseMcNair, #CaroleRobertson, and #CynthiaWesley were killed when a bomb planted by members of the #KuKluxKlan exploded at the #16thStreetBaptistChurch in #BirminghamAL. Today marks the #55thAnniversary of the #September151963 #16thStreetBaptistChurchBombing which took the lives of these #4LittleGirls and wounded 22 others. #FBI concluded in 1965 that the bombing had been committed by four known #KuKluxKlansmen - #BobbyFrankCherry #HermanFrankCash #RobertEdwardChambliss #ThomasEdwinBlantonJr. No prosecutions ensued until 1977, when Chambliss was tried and convicted of the first degree murder of one of the victims, 11-year-old Carol Denise McNair. Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr. and Bobby Cherry were each convicted of four counts of murder and sentenced to #LifeImprisonment in 2001 and 2002 respectively. Herman Cash, who died in 1994, was never charged with his involvement in the bombing. #BlackLivesMatter #BlackGirlsMatter #BlackChildrenMatter #Birmingham #BirminghamAlabama #Alabama #CrazyCoolGroovy #CCG #CCGalatoire https://www.instagram.com/p/BnxWommHuvQ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1js3molo89lod

#16thstreetbaptistchurch #birmingham Funny to see such a historic site in person and realize it looks like so many other churches. But knowing #4littlegirls lost their lives due to a bomb changes your perspective. I need to rewatch #spikelee #documentary I didn't know that very same day a young boy was killed too. And a Sunday school teacher survived who is still alive today. They too are included on monument to the girls.. (at Birmingham, Alabama)
