Katharine was abandoned at the age of eight by her parents. While she had been with them, it was not a healthy or stable relationship. She was forced to watch her parents constantly fight and leave the house for days at a time. She rarely had enough food in the house to keep her going and would often get fed by neighbors or soup kitchens as a child.

She was placed into foster care once neighbors reports her parents’ disappearance. She jumped from group homes/foster parents until she was about sixteen.

At sixteen she dropped out of school (and got her GED instead) and ran away from her group home to live on her own. She made due through petty crimes (pick-pocketing and breaking-and-entering) or by charming a stranger into letting her into their home for the night.

At eighteen, Katharine legally changed her surname so she wouldn’t be related to her birth parents. She also didn’t want to risk her bio-parents ever finding her.

Katharine met her husband through a fake charity event where she was posing as an event coordinator (but really using it to steal people’s money). Winston found her charming after a handful of conversations with her, and ended up asking her out for dinner the following evening. She figured she would only be kept around for a bit and tried to get as much money out of him until he kicked her aside, but found herself falling for him after continuous months of seeing each other. The pair were engaged and married by the one year mark, much to his family’s horror.

Prior to meeting Winston, she really didn’t believe in love or the idea of marriage. Looking back at her relationship though, she’s realized it was a giant whirlwind of love-bombing and subtle manipulation on his side to her that kept her blinded to what was going on. Having what felt like a “fairy-tale” romance had her turning a blind eye to some of the red flags she would’ve otherwise not put up with before.

Riley’s favorite thing to do is sit on their rooftop and look up at the stars. They’re hoping that Swynlake isn’t big enough to ruin this because it’s been such an important part of their routine. They seem pretty good at functioning with only a couple hours of sleep so why wouldn’t they just sit outside otherwise? In the winter they would just shovel off some of the snow from their favorite spot and bundle up extra well.

Yule is friendly, optimistic, laid-back, enthusiastic, kind, confident, funny, and a nature-lover. A brilliant but lazy student, he tends to fall asleep in class but still manages to maintain his average grade. Despite this, he's a natural-born magician, able to control three major elements way before he enrolls in NRC, which secure his place as a Prefect of Terraludus.

He's a true believer of the "power of friendship". He wants everyone in his dorm to be friends, which was nearly impossible because of the intense rivalry between all the heir in the dorm. He also seems ignorant of the dislike that other individuals have for him.

==/Backstory/==

Yule is the only son of the Titor Family. His father was the trusted advisor of the Royal Family of Miraculous Dominion. The King and Queen themselves couldn't have a child so they picked Yule as the next line of the throne. Yule didn't really say anything about it. The change from being a normal kid (as normal as you can imagine being the King's adviser's son would be) to a prince was a bit overwhelming, but he managed to get over with it. Sure he would throw tantrum earlier, but he could live with this.

On the day, when he was exploring the forest, he found a hurt Forest Spirit. Being a kind kid he was, he healed the Forest Spirit with his magic. As a thank, you, the Forest Spirit, whose name was Lief, vowed to be Yule protector and will grant any wishes that he wanted. Yule meanwhile was just happy he had a friend to talk to. This created a bond between them.

Being a prince came with a price though. Assassination attempts and kidnapping kept on coming. However, Lief always protected Yule, killing the assassins without Yule knowing. Lief became more overprotective toward Yule. Every time some royal brats were being mean to him, they would end up in an accident the next day. This caused most kids to be terrified of Yule, which the young boy didn't understand. But Lief made sure Yule remember that he would never leave them.

One day though, Lief crossed the line. One of Yule's instructor was scolding Yule for not doing his assignment. Lief saw then as him threatening the boy, so Lief killed him right in front of Yule's eyes. This, of course, traumatized Yule who immediately ran to his parents and the King and Queen. The King decided to cut the bond between Lief and Yule, leaving Lief half dead and banished him back to the forest while Yule lost his memories about the Forest Spirit.

Life continued as normal for Yule, but deep down he was always wondered why he felt like he was missing something...

More than anything this story was a history lesson for me - and a welcomed one, because I have never researched Chile and the turmoil it went through in the 20th century. The author´s style is not my favourite, it felt a bit too dry and clipped on more than one occasion, but even if I didn't mesh with it I read the book very quickly.

Mr Rochester

Thank you Sarah Shoemaker for taking a different road than the majority of Jane Eyre retellings, which invariably portray Mr Rochester as a devil incarnate. Because that seems to be the general modern consensus. But you have managed to create a portrait of a man, who retains his flaws (and yes, he becomes manipulative), but finally has a voice and can offer his own point of view. The book has a slow, languid pace and it very much reminds the reader of the 19th-century novels in style, which fits the narrative. There are no great surprises, since everything dramatic we already know, still I greatly enjoyed reading about Rochester as a somehow lost and starving for affection little boy, awkward teenaged trying to please, optimistic and charmed young man and eventually bitter adult who struggles for bits and pieces of happiness. I also believe that this version of Edward Rochester (as well as Bertha Mason) is much more loyal to what Charlotte Brontë had in mind when she was writing them, than what many other have managed, when they tried to twist the characters and their motivations in their own attempts to retell the masterpiece that is Jane Eyre.

My Best Friend's Exorcism

This may not have been as half as scary or half as hilarious as I had expected it to be... but it turned out to be a perfect book for the given moment. It reads very easily and quickly and more than on possession it actually centres on the friendship between two teenage girls. I enjoyed it immensely.

The Only Good Indians

I am rather new to the horror genre, so I have little to compare this book to. That said, I think it was solid, even if unevenly paced. Scenes which truly leave you scared and interested are interchanged with ones that I suppose were mean to give you the less obvious creeps, but quite a lot of them bored me. And frankly, there was way too much basketball, even if it was important in the later parts of the story. Still, I appreciate the Native American culture representation as well as the thrill and immersion I got near the end. I believe it is not a spoiler to say that the finish left me satisfied and actually moved.

I have read some truly excellent books on remarkable cities (like London, Prague and St. Petersburg) and while I admit writing a book on Jerusalem must have been a much more daunting task, it still does not excuse this book being rather lacklustre. Perhaps my own expectations were simply misplaced? I would have liked a story of Jerusalem more focused on the culture, the interesting personalities, the architecture, perhaps even literature and other art forms... focused on what makes Jerusalem special and unique. Instead, this book is an exhausting encyclopedia of every massacre and war and ruler. Which is fine when you are trying to look up something basic, but not nearly enough to make for good reading. I have also come across some inaccurate statements, which, even if seemingly minor, put in question other claims made in the book. Not to mention the author´s obsession with informing you on the sexual prowess (or lack of it) and perversion of nearly everybody he mentions. For example, I did not need to know that Gustave Flaubert once had sex with three girls and orgasmed four times when he visited Beirut. A catalogue of events and names, not a particularly impressive tribute to one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

I read this book because I thought I would give Sarah J. Maas a chance, her being so popular an author. So my homework is done now and...yeah... this is a super trash literature that is completely fine to enjoy when you want your brain to completely switch off and not think at all. But as for the world-building, editing, writing, characters, pacing.... nah. Not good. I could write a 24-page-long essay on what all there is to criticize, but then I realized this book did not really give me anything so why should I bother reviewing.... Givin it 2 stars here because I did not feel the need to throw it across the room and burn it, it did not make me mad (like some other books did in the past), and that vacuum cleaner scene WAS funny.
