Learning to Ask Why
When we think without Marx’s perspective, that is, without considering class interests and class power, we seldom ask why certain things happen. Many things are reported in the news but few are explained. Little is said about how the social order is organized and whose interests prevail. Devoid of a framework that explains why things happen, we are left to see the world as do mainstream media pundits: as a flow of events, a scatter of particular developments and personalities unrelated to a larger set of social relations—propelled by happenstance, circumstance, confused intentions, and individual ambition, never by powerful class interests—and yet producing effects that serve such interests with impressive regularity.
Thus, we fail to associate social problems with the socio-economic forces that create them and we learn to truncate our own critical thinking. Imagine if we attempted something different; for example, if we tried to explain that wealth and poverty exist together not in accidental juxtaposition, but because wealth causes poverty, an inevitable outcome of economic exploitation both at home and abroad. How could such an analysis gain any exposure in the capitalist media or in mainstream political life?
Suppose we started with a particular story about how child labor in Indonesia is contracted by multinational corporations at near starvation wage levels. This information probably would not be carried in rightwing publications, but in 1996 it did appear—after decades of effort by some activists—in the centrist mainstream press. What if we then crossed a line and said that these exploitative employer-employee relations were backed by the full might of the Indonesian military government. Fewer media would carry this story but it still might get mentioned in an inside page of the New York Times or Washington Post.
Then suppose we crossed another line and said that these repressive arrangements would not prevail were it not for generous military aid from the United States, and that for almost thirty years the homicidal Indonesian military has been financed, armed, advised, and trained by the U.S. national security state. Such a story would be even more unlikely to appear in the liberal press but it is still issue specific and safely without an overall class analysis, so it might well make its way into left-liberal opinion publications like the Nation and the Progressive.
Now suppose we pointed out that the conditions found in Indonesia—the heartless economic exploitation, brutal military repression, and lavish U.S. support—exist in scores of other countries.Suppose we then crossed that most serious line of all and instead of just deploring this fact we also asked why successive U.S. administrations involve themselves in such unsavory pursuits throughout the world. And what if then we tried to explain that the whole phenomenon is consistent with the U.S. dedication to making the world safe for the free market and the giant multinational corporations, and that the intended goals are (a) to maximize opportunities to accumulate wealth by depressing the wage levels of workers throughout the world and preventing them from organizing on behalf of their own interests, and (b) to protect the overall global system of free-market capital accumulation.
Then what if, from all this, we concluded that U.S. foreign policy is neither timid, as the conservatives say, nor foolish, as the liberals say, but is remarkably successful in rolling back just about all governments and social movements that attempt to serve popular needs rather than private corporate greed.
Such an analysis, hurriedly sketched here, would take some effort to lay out and would amount to a Marxist critique—a correct critique— of capitalist imperialism. Though Marxists are not the only ones that might arrive at it, it almost certainly would not be published anywhere except in a Marxist publication. We crossed too many lines. Because we tried to explain the particular situation (child labor) in terms of a larger set of social relations (corporate class power), our presentation would be rejected out of hand as “ideological.” The perceptual taboos imposed by the dominant powers teach people to avoid thinking critically about such powers. In contrast, Marxism gets us into the habit of asking why, of seeing the linkage between political events and class power.
A common method of devaluing Marxism is to misrepresent what it actually says and then attack the misrepresentation. This happens easily enough since most of the anti-Marxist critics and their audiences have only a passing familiarity with Marxist literature and rely instead on their own caricatured notions. Thus, the Roman Catholic Pastoral Letter on Marxist Communism rejects the claim that “structural [read, class] revolution can entirely cure a disease that is man himself” nor can it provide “the solution of all human suffering.” But who makes such a claim? There is no denying that revolution does not entirely cure all human suffering. But why is that assertion used as a refutation of Marxism? Most Marxists are neither chiliastic nor Utopian. They dream not of a perfect society but of a better, more just life. They make no claim to eliminating all suffering, and recognize that even in the best of societies there are the inevitable assaults of misfortune, mortality, and other vulnerabilities of life. And certainly in any society there are some people who, for whatever reason, are given to wrongful deeds and self-serving corruptions. The highly imperfect nature of human beings should make us all the more determined not to see power and wealth accumulating in the hands of an unaccountable few, which is the central dedication of capitalism.
Capitalism and its various institutions affect the most personal dimensions of everyday life in ways not readily evident. A Marxist approach helps us to see connections to which we were previously blind, to relate effects to causes, and to replace the arbitrary and the mysterious with the regular and the necessary. A Marxist perspective helps us to see injustice as rooted in systemic causes that go beyond individual choice, and to view crucial developments not as neutral happenings but as the intended consequences of class power and interest. Marxism also shows how even unintended consequences can be utilized by those with superior resources to service their interests.
Is Marx still relevant today? Only if you want to know why the media distort the news in a mostly mainstream direction; why more and more people at home and abroad face economic adversity while money continues to accumulate in the hands of relatively few; why there is so much private wealth and public poverty in this country and elsewhere; why U.S. forces find it necessary to intervene in so many regions of the world; why a rich and productive economy offers chronic recessions, underemployment, and neglect of social needs; and why many political officeholders are unwilling or unable to serve the public interest.
Some Marxist theorists have so ascended into the numbing altitudes of abstract cogitation that they seldom touch political realities here on earth. They spend their time talking to each other in self-referential code, a scholastic ritual that Doug Dowd described as “How many Marxists can dance on the head of a surplus value.” Fortunately there are others who not only tell us about Marxist theory but demonstrate its utility by applying it to political actualities. They know how to draw connections between immediate experience and the larger structural forces that shape that experience. They cross the forbidden line and talk about class power.
This is why, for all the misrepresentation and suppression, Marxist scholarship survives. While not having all the answers, it does have a superior explanatory power, telling us something about reality that bourgeois scholarship refuses to do. Marxism offers the kind of subversive truths that cause fear and trembling among the high and mighty, those who live atop a mountain of lies.

A LIFE WITHOUT STAN LEE? -- Part One
This is the first month of my life without Stan Lee alive in it.
Tumblr media
I think it’s appropriate to post this essay today, on Stan Lee’s birthday, the first one without him actually here to celebrate it. I couldn’t bring myself to write about Stan the day he died, just shy of 96 years old, and the week and month that followed were no better. Today I can put down some thoughts.
I am a child of Stan Lee. His work with Jack Kirby and John Romita appeared in the first comic book I remember reading – the Marvel-produced America’s Best TV Comics, a 25-cent comicbook that promoted the ABC Saturday morning cartoons.   It's one of the first powerful memories of childhood that have stayed with me for all this time.
Tumblr media
Across my formative years, Stan Lee's words encouraged me to learn, to read more of everything -- not just comics. I spent much of my early years in the library and ordering Scholastic books every month through school. I read everything -- fiction, biographies, histories, science books.
Yet I grew up loving the comics that blazed brightly with his public persona and, while my parents toiled at just earning a living and staying alive, I learned much from "The Man." Stan taught me a lot about being a decent human being. It wasn't all, "With great power there must also come...great responsibility," though that was there, as well.
Tumblr media
In recent years we corresponded a bit about the morals and messages of his words in his scripts, his Stan's Soapbox, and his many lectures and interviews. I told him we should assemble a book, Everything I Know, I learned From Stan Lee.
He wrote back -- "The paperback you suggested, 'Everything I Know I Learned from Stan Lee,' sounds like it could be funny. Especially if it consists of only one page with only one thing learned -- how to spell 'Excelsior!' Keep the faith, David. You're one of the good guys! Excelsior! Stan"
Tumblr media
We discussed it a bit more but, soon after, Stan's eyesight worsened and he stopped answering his own mail; whoever took over had no idea what we'd been talking about. I let the idea drop.
Back when I was 12, I decided my career goal was to work with Stan Lee. Eventually, I achieved that goal but not by submitting stories in my teens and 20s but much later in my life, as an agent and book author. By the time I was 14, he'd gone from editor-in-chief to Publisher -- which meant he'd need more writers, right?
Tumblr media
The first time I met Stan Lee and got to take a photo with him, I looked up at him and said, “Smile, and look as much like my Uncle as you can.” He laughed and gave my artist friend Scott Rockwell and me a good half-hour of his time, looking at art and answering questions. That was in 1978 – fully 40 years ago – and I remember it all as if it were yesterday. Stan was a memorable guy who could make you feel like the most important person in the room. I only wish I still had that photo; maybe Scott has it buried somewhere.
Four years later, I sold my first professional comics scripts to Pacific Comics and two years after that was writing a Superman assignment for DC with Kevin Juaire. Instead of ending up at Marvel as I’d hoped – which would’ve required moving to New York and being involved in daily office politics – I became a comics packager, then a publisher, then an agent. That’s how Stan knew me professionally, as a writer and an artist’s agent.
In early 1989, at a Capital City Distribution trade show, my Innovation Publishing was set up promoting the books we would be releasing into comics shops in a few weeks.  Stan was walking by, and I suggested to my assistant Paul Curtis that we should invite Stan to dinner.  He ran over, asked, and Stan said yes!  He not only brought along Carol Kalish and regaled us with two hours of stories about life at Marvel, Stan insisted that Marvel pay for the meal!  Nobody thought to bring a camera, but the memories stayed with us.  As I recall, Steve Sullivan, Paul Curtis and his girlfriend Amy, and I were the happy Innovation team at that dinner.  Kevin VanHook came on the trip but was elsewhere at that time.  He made up for it later at a party by chatting on a couch with Stan and later dancing with Carol.
In the '90s, Stan and I would chat at every opportunity at conventions.
When Marvel released a limited edition hardcover reprint of his 1947 book Secrets of the Comics, I decided to give in to my fannish impulses and use its endpapers as my autograph book.
Stan, of course, was the first to sign it in 1996, and a batch of Silver Age stalwarts followed.
Tumblr media
By then we made it a point to get photos together every year across two decades. It was a clear timeline of the both of us getting older.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the internet blossomed, I helped Stan a little when he first joined AOL. He asked me how AOL Instant Messenger worked, how to turn it on when he wanted to communicate and off when he didn’t want to be bombarded with Messages, and so on. Another time, an article he wanted to read was behind a login/password, and he asked me help get him through that. It tickled me to help Stan “The Man” with such basic web-things.
From the mid-'90s through the early 2000s, Stan would call the Glass House offices about once a month to ask for my perspective on what was going on in the comics biz, since we dealt not only with all the Marvel editors but everyone else as well. Real conversations, not the "'Nuff said, Pilgrim!" stuff. He'd graciously take an extra few minutes to chat with my assistant Graeme, who loved talking to his childhood icon.
Around 1997, Marvel's savvy publisher asked Glass House to create two dozen project proposals for a line of second-tier titles that my company would package. We ended up over-achieving and submitted 28 of them -- one of them for the first-tier Fantastic Four that I understood we had little chance of getting, but I had to try. The art was Joe Bennett's doing a Kirbyesque style.
Tumblr media
Stan was kind enough to read over my FF proposal/outline and fine-tune my dialogue for the pages, before I submitted.
Likely worried about how an outside packager controlling so many titles would affect his own position, the editor-in-chief buried all 28 projects until, two years later, he assigned an editor to reject every proposal outright; that editor told me my FF dialogue didn't capture the essence of the characters -- not realizing the words were Stan's.
(Sidebar:  It was so ridiculous, that editor even rejected a proposal that another Marvel editor already saw, bought, and published!)
When Meryl and I got married in 2001, Stan sent us a gift -- a lemon cake and a note saying he wished he could've made it to the wedding. We still have the note; we ate the cake.
Tumblr media
In 2006, Stan's POW! Entertainment launched Who Wants to be a Super-Hero? on The Sci-Fi Channel, and my Glass House Graphics contributed all the cover artwork for both seasons of the TV show. We even drew the comicbooks that starred both winners -- Matthew Atherton and Jarrett Crippen, both of whom became our friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When my friend, then-GHG artist Will Conrad, worked with him on the Dark Horse Feedback comic book, Stan took the time personally to choose Will out of our roster of artists, and to phone him in Brazil for a long talk before sending him the plot. (And yes, it was a full page-by-page plot.) They spoke several times during Will's month working on the book, each time helpful and upbeat.
Tumblr media
The second book, with The Defuser, was more problematic. The network and producers weren't honoring their commitments to the winner, so I reached out to Stan who said, "I don't see any compelling reason to bother doing it, since we weren't renewed for a third season." I replied, "Because you said you would? Because you have the power to do it, and with great power there must also come great responsibility?" He made it happen, and Glass House Graphics's Kajo Baldissimo did the art.
Tumblr media
We also drew the box art and insert comic books for multiple DVD animation projects that POW! released, with art by GHG's fabulous Fabio Laguna.
Stan always made time to meet privately with my artists, and my family, for which I was always grateful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course when Comics Buyer’s Guide published a big feature issue for Stan’s 75th Birthday, I contributed an essay and hired the great Marie Severin to do a caricature cover for it and sent Stan a giant print of the art.
Tumblr media
Around the time of Stan's 90th birthday celebration, I had Tina Francisco create a new birthday cover for Comics Buyer's Guide, and I penned a long article about him, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, we sent to Stan a poster of the color art, and he sent back this card -- as always, written in his own handwriting.

Location Competition
Through web searching and local shopping I have found three main companies in the String Art industry that I will be putting my business up against. Scholastic Inc., String of the Art, and Craft-Tastic, each have their own unique String Art products that make them different from competitors.
Scholastic Inc. is the largest company of the three and has manufactured many products for children since 1996. They have a great relationship with the education system in North America, promoting their products at Book Fairs within schools and providing kids with catalogues to order from. They also have a great website that is easy to navigate through. They are mainly geared towards children, and provide a Book kit that explains to kids how to create string art as well as shows them what their finished product should look like, and provides the material. I think they do a great job of promoting to their target audience as well as providing a fair price for what you are receiving. One of their weaknesses would simply be their limited options.
String of the Art also sells String Art kits that are more geared towards an older demographic. they have higher quality products such as hand sanded and stained wood boards for creating a more appealing product for an adult to display in their home. The website design feels cold and kind of primitive, it could definitely use an update, but is relatively easy to navigate. It’s price point is much higher but that’s reflected in the higher quality material. They don’t have a concrete store you can buy from as all their sales are online but they do ship within two business days. Quality and design is definitely a strength of this company as it offers many more options. It’s weaknesses might be it’s lack of promotion and eye appeal.
Craft-Tastic is another company that focuses mainly on children’s crafts. It has a great selection with tons of different styles and patterns to choose from. they offer more than simple DIY canvases with 3D models also being part of their catalogue. the packaging looks great and they can be found all over Amazon, Indigo, Walmart, Toys R Us, etc. Their price point seems high to me especially after reading some unsatisfactory customer reviews stating that their material is cheap and and advised people not to buy. Quality in this company looks to be a weakness to me as well as the fact that I could not find a Craft-Tastic website or brick and mortar store to browse. The looks of the products themselves and the amount of stores that carry their products are definitely a strength.

The True Story of Typhoid Mary - The first confirmed 'super-spreader' in history?
What happens when a person's reputation has been forever damaged? With archival photographs and text among other primary sources, this riveting biography of Mary Mallon by the Sibert medalist and Newbery Honor winner Susan Bartoletti looks beyond the tabloid scandal of Mary's controversial life. How she was treated by medical and legal officials reveals a lesser-known story of human and constitutional rights, entangled with the science of pathology and enduring questions about who Mary Mallon really was. How did her name become synonymous with deadly disease? And who is really responsible for the lasting legacy of Typhoid Mary? This thorough exploration includes an author's note, timeline, annotated source notes, and bibliography.
Awards: Newbery Honor, Carolyn Field Award, Lamplighter Award, Parents Gold Choice Award, Outstanding Pennsylvania Author of the Year, Children's Book Guild Award for Body of Nonfiction Work
Abstract:
Susan Campbell Bartoletti was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1958 and grew up in rural Pennsylvania, a place she has used as a setting in her young adult novels and nonfiction books. A student, author, and teacher, Bartoletti uses historical elements as the backbone of many of her works, and she has won many awards for her ability to combine historical facts with her unique writing style.
Biography
Susan Campbell Bartoletti was born Susan Campbell in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on November 18, 1958. Two months after her birth, her father was killed in a car accident. Her mother later remarried after Bartoletti finished kindergarten, and the family moved to the outskirts of Scranton, Pennsylvania. She loved growing up in the countryside of rural Pennsylvania, and she later used this setting in many of her works. As a young girl, Bartoletti enjoyed reading, drawing, horseback riding, playing piano, and listening to the Beatles. By the eighth grade, she was editor of her newspaper and had discovered her passion for art and writing. She decided to pursue her career as soon as possible, and after her junior year of high school, she left to attend college early. Bartoletti attended Marywood College and majored in art at first. After realizing the stiff competition in the field and receiving praise from her creative writing professor, Campbell switched gears and decided to major in English and secondary education instead. After her sophomore year, she married Joseph Bartoletti, and the couple later had two children, Brandy and Joey. Bartoletti received her BA in 1979 and obtained her first teaching job at the age of 20. She began teaching English at North Pocono Middle School and remained there for 18 years. She also co-advised the school's award-winning literary magazine for 15 years. While teaching, she simultaneously earned her MA in English at the University of Scranton in 1982. Bartoletti became involved in many different activities, including the Children's Literature Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Rutgers Council on Children's Literature. She also found time to write more. Her first picture book, Silver at Night, was published in 1994. This was an autobiographical work about her husband's grandfather, an Italian immigrant who spent nearly half a century in the coal mines. Bartoletti wanted a lot of her writing to focus on historical events, particularly labor history in her native Pennsylvania. In 1996, her work Growing Up in Coal Country was published. This book focused on the working and living conditions of Pennsylvania coal towns and won her numerous awards including the Carolyn Field Award, the Lamplighter Award, and the Parents Gold Choice Award. She remained ambitious, and as she was writing and teaching eighth grade English she became an instructor in children's literature at the University of Scranton. In 1998, Bartoletti decided to stop teaching at the middle school in order to pursue her writing career and earn her PhD in creative writing. She attended Binghamton University with a full fellowship, where she won the Excellence in Research award for her doctoral dissertation.
In 1999, Susan wrote a book concerning child labor laws and the hardships children endured as they were forced to work in big industries. Kids on Strike! discussed the problems of child labor and the actions to strike against them. The pictures within the work reveal children suffering from sleep deprivation and missing fingers and showed the world just how tragic child labor was. She also focused on another historical tragedy in 2001 when she finished writing Black Potatoes: The Story of the Great Irish Famine, 1845-1850. This work tells the story of the Great Potato Famine in which one million Irish died from starvation and disease, and two million had to leave Ireland to escape death. That same year, the Pennsylvania Library Association named Bartoletti the Outstanding Pennsylvania Author of the Year. In the midst of all the attention, Bartoletti wrote yet another book titled The Flag Maker (2004). This was a story about Caroline Pickersgill and her mother, Mary, sewing a large-enough American flag for the British to see it during a major battle in the War of 1812. She was inspired to write about it after she saw the 80-pound masterpiece in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
One of Bartoletti's most compelling books was written in 2005. Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow is a story about young Germans devoting their lives to Hitler and his Nazi regime. The book also incorporated stories about young people resisting the movement, a dangerous and often fatal move. The photographs in the book put the impact of Hitler's campaign in perspective and are difficult to look at. One of the first photos was a 1934 photo taken during German Youth Day in Potsdam where a young boy is shown raising his hand in the Nazi salute. In 2006, Hitler Youth became a Newbery Honor Book selection.
On her website and in interviews, Bartoletti mentions that she is often asked if she writes the works she does, which often delve into difficult and complex topics, "to show kids today how good they have it." The answer is no. Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook
“It’s a secret society. Dumbledore’s in charge, he founded it. It’s the people who fought against You-Know-Who last time.” —Description and history of the Order
Why did Lord Voldemort single Harry out? For five books, this mystery seemed somewhat clouded. It was not until Order of the Phoenix Audiobook free that we realised what a burden Dumbledore had been carrying on his shoulders, and that the rather batty Professor Trelawney (of all people) had predicted the fate of Harry Potter in a pub before he had even been born.
About Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook
Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook free is a fantasy audiobook written by British author J. K. Rowling and the fifth audiobook in the Harry Potter Audio Books series. It follows Harry Potter’s struggles through his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, including the surreptitious return of the antagonist Lord Voldemort, O.W.L. exams, and an obstructive Ministry of Magic.
Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook
Plot of The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook
The Order of the Phoenix was a secret society founded by Albus Dumbledore to oppose Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. The original Order was created in the 1970s. It was constructed after Voldemort returned to England from abroad and started his campaign to take over the Ministry of Magic and persecute Muggle-borns. The Order worked with the Ministry to oppose the Dark Lord and his followers, and played a crucial role in the First Wizarding War. Their first victory came in 1981, with Voldemort’s first defeat at the hands of Harry Potter. The victory came with the high cost of many of their members.
The Order disbanded but was reconvened in 1995 after Harry Potter informed Dumbledore of Lord Voldemort’s return. The Ministry refused to admit that the Dark Lord had returned, thus the Order alone worked to protect Harry Potter and the prophecy concerning him and Voldemort in the Department of Mysteries. After an intense battle occurred there on 18 June 1996 between the Order, Dumbledore’s Army, and the Death Eaters, the Ministry finally admitted the truth.
The following year would see the Order losing their leader and the Ministry being conquered by Voldemort. The Order remained an underground resistance, trying to protect Muggles and broadcast the truth during the worst days of the Second Wizarding War. They answered the call to arms by Dumbledore’s Army on 2 May 1998, fighting Voldemort and his Death Eaters for the final time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Battle of Hogwarts ended with Voldemort’s death at Harry Potter’s hands and a decisive victory for the Order and their allies.

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook Review
Narrator
There are two versions of the Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire Audiobook free, one is narrated by Stephen Fry, the other Jim Dale. Now, you can enjoy both of them on EZ Audiobooks.
The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook by Stephen Fry: Stephen Fry makes the characters even more vivid. His voice for Hagrid is low, gruff and gentle, just what you would expect. Hermione sounds incredibly precocious and annoying but gradually becomes less so as the book progresses. The story wraps you in a warm cloak of positive feelings, happiness and a sense of belonging. Having Fry read such a lovely story to you makes it all the more comforting and enjoyable. Even though Harry Potter is J K Rowlings first audiobook and her prose may be flawed in places, (particularly in the beginning describing life with the Dursleys) Harry Potter is undoubtedly a classic made even more magical by Stephen Fry. I highly recommend this audiobook for all ages.
The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook by Jim Dale: Jim Dale is another fantastic narrator. Born in England, Dale also has an English accent. Dale is a voice artist, and definitely weighted towards to the dramatized end of the scale. Dale invites a sense of urgency in his voice, and has you on your toes. This increased dramatization, although predominantly great, I feel it is sometimes a little over the top.
Dale is magician in character range; he created 134 voices for the Harry Potter Audiobooks series. This series has given Dale more awards than any narrator previous. His prestige, and breadth of bestseller coverage is rather astonishing.
The Goblet Of Fire Audiobook Story
Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook free is the longest book in the series, which makes it very hard to whittle down to just 10 things we loved about this epic story. But we must try.
Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook free download
The story of Harry and his misadventures reaches new levels of complexity and darkness in this audiobook. The audiobook introduces the Order of the Phoenix, a group committed to fighting against Voldemort and all he stands for. We also get to meet a whole load of new and loveable characters.
Standouts for me would have to be Dolores Umbridge, Nymphadora Tonks and the mischievous Mundungus Fletcher. Not only do we get to meet new characters, but we get to spend a little more time outside of Harry’s usual haunts (Hogwarts, the Dursleys, Ron’s) which is nice because we get more than a glimpse into the magical world. St Mungo’s hospital for magical maladies and injuries is innovative and original, it is also where one of the many very humorous scenes between Arthur and Molly Weasley takes place. Grimmauld Place, the home of Sirius and headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix gives us an understanding of wizarding homes- particularly those of dark wizards. With a filthy, old, grumpy House Elf, a vile painting of Mrs Black which- when opened, will scream insults at anyone in the near vicinity.
Without a doubt, Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Audiobook free has some of the most exciting, humorous, uplifting and heart-wrenching scenes of the series. One of my all-time favorite parts has to be when Dumbledores Army decides to wreak havoc with the High Inquisitor (with even some of the teachers joining in with the fun) and Fred and George’s spectacular desertion. I still smile thinking about it! This audiobook really is a gem of a story and brilliantly told.

Electronic Book Visitor.
Greenmoxie-an excellent website for all factors eco-friendly and environmentally friendly-recently addressed a Tiny House. Due to my parents, which consistently attempted to increase my education and learning, one of my very first exposures to computer games was to participate in Hike at the college. He made this clear that the mod was actually merely obtainable by modifying the authentic code, which no gender settings came in a standard retail copy from the activity. You'll be actually blown away by exactly how intricate video games are actually these times if you have not played an online video activity since PacMan. Buying a video game console at launch is constantly something from a punt, however especially with the Change, you are purchasing possibility. Initially, let me point out that before reading this book I was unwavering in my love for Gray Grayson. Letters Concerning Literature, financed by the Facility for the Book in the Collection from Congress, encourages pupils to write to writers. That is actually not to point out that the journey hasn't viewed its allotment of incorrect beginnings and alternate routes: Computer game tourneys go back to the early 1970s, and tries to switch them into watchable movie theater started as distant as the very early 1980s. Video games don't need to have scholastic validation to offer, however academia has to involve along with activities if you want to modernise its method to social past history. A kit is a game theme that comes with pre-made resources, setups and game logic. Requiring some rigorous participation off your peers, Always keep Chatting as well as No person Explodes is an enjoyable video game along with the right team from folks, as well as that's even more enjoyable in Virtual Reality making use of either a Samsung Gear VR or Oculus Rift headset. The LovePlus gals also appreciate special favors that true girls can easily commonly just rivalry. William Chyr's activity appears like a lithograph, its own architectural drawing and also brutalist dreamland rolled into one. That choice, created in the heat energy from a minute, showed the provider as ultimately unready to fight this ideological war on the social phase, working as a multi-million-dollar preventive for activity designers hoping to represent sex in their games. In the event you loved this informative article and you wish to receive more details relating to mojeszczescie.info generously visit our web site. Right now, sex was actually the natural" development, as he put this to Kolbe, a vital subject for games to deal with if they were actually to claim the imaginative flexibility managed literary works and also cinema. An effective player or even a sportsperson could play also the video game of lifestyle efficiently. As a result our team count on the designers to have a bit additional time to focus on the first few episodes from Period 3, in order that they will not have to hurry all of them out the door; along with additional prep work having actually been performed prior to the 1st episode debuts in the very first few months of 2015. This ill me at first, however at that point our company are actually introduced to this brand new cast of enjoyable, loud volleyball gamers and also it made up. I was anticipating an unsafe, spectacular game from one-upsmanship along the lines from the flick The Stature. LOL, source when X-mas comes Sony shoppers will actually havea bunch of brand-new activities to purchase, and some true brand-new components to enjoy too. The most significant stick you can trump Infinite Warfare along with isn't that this's not as strong as Field of battle 1 or Titanfall 2, this is actually that it is merely kilometers out of even the game that is actually packed from it: Modern Warfare Remastered. Among the packed activities are every Sonic name discharged for the platform, along with the three authentic Deadly Kombat names. And GBAoid (additionally named GameBoid) takes care of these handheld games without breaking a sweat. The redemptive popularity of Battlefield 1 has revealed there is a huge cravings for video games that treat their historic settings along with respect. All in all, this manual supplies superb war from titans, intelligent strategies that can easily take on The Victor's Affliction, a non-standard charm and every thing you can request for from a dystopian dream. Previously, long animations would certainly show up as white colored squares appearing inside mobile games due to an image-size limitation. In the sentimental preamble Wenger bore in mind outlawing Mars pubs prior to his 1st game accountable, in the past in 1996. You view, this is what I love about Salinger's thus frequently opposed work - its ability to rouse notions and also viewpoints that surpass the manual and also the story file and make you assume, as well as perhaps -simply possibly - be actually a contact defiant, as well. I regularly checked out pre getting as a technique to get a video game as well as you perform a spending plan. Players that desire to try out a brand new sport or even get inside the activity without devoting to a total time are encouraged to obtain on the belows lists for as lots of sporting activities and also evenings as they select. Concerning Blog site - United States Making quilts is actually a pleasant quilt store found in Orem, UT that has a large collection from excellent quality making quilts cloths, ideas, packages, and also classes. Educators have located that video games not only involve trainees, however they also inspire knowing. From his deal with Game of Thrones," Dinklage is precisely comfortable with ensembles, and the upcoming Avengers" movie is actually pointed out to consist of dozens from other Wonder signs. Regardless of the copious amounts from rape in Video game of Thrones, the ghastly nature of this scene need to make it the one that most leads to audiences to firmly press their lower legs shut. I carry out have to provide this publication some props, since this is the first time I have ever had to close a publication for 90 few seconds so as to frantically laugh. Interior demonstrations provide our company a suggestion of exactly what the activity seemed like before this initial show but a considerable amount of work was poured right into developing the finished disclose. Below's every thing you must find out about the device, off the video games to follow in the adhering to weeks and months as well as the hardware that energies this. Yet another approach is actually to ignore mixturing right into the video game and also as an alternative ask players to endure an ad in exchange for online activity currency.

Electronic Publication Viewers.
Update: Inspect the newly-added final video game on our list for a video game you can easily play in the background at the workplace! Nintendo's positioning of Change as its next house console has actually quite camouflaged that it is one of the most qualified portable video games equipment ever before created. Effectively, that day has happened, such as yet another activity gotten in touch with Robo Recall-- the best and also most refined virtual truth video gaming take in I've attended date. Our company have actually received no suggestion that Sheeran are going to be playing, yet showrunners David Benioff and also Dan Weiss disclosed that they had been aiming to publication him for a while. Many times when you make a game in Stencyl, you'll would like to begin along with a Kit. Isobel that may review tarot card cards as well as begins a love with her that could help him succeed the activity when Marco expands right into their adult years he fulfills a young woman. The first official photographes from the seventh time have actually likewise been discharged, along with HBO providing 15 shots coming from the upcoming set from episodes. This is actually one reason that in tennis I feel I go on strengthening my video game as; I simply can certainly not criticize anybody for my loss in an activity. If you have any kind of inquiries relating to where and ways to use 3dplastick.info, you could call us at our own website. In an impressive (as well as entirely fracical) Facebook Live show, Video game of Thrones showmakers motivated audiences to comment 'FIRE', which will trigger a weapon to gradually dissolve the ice protecting the launch day. Benediktsson's excursions begin in the town from Akureyri, on Iceland's north shoreline, and feature numerous locations in the place around Pond Mývatn that will recognize to Game of Thrones lovers. I'll be truthful, between this book and Beyoncé introducing she's having identical twins, I think that the planet is attempting to relieve the impact of Donald Trump's following executive order. There are actually associations and training programs looking into computer game as social background, while the well-liked online video set, Past Respawned possesses scholastics evaluating exactly how video games like Assassin's Creed IV as well as Fallout 4 current background to players, as well as exactly how those players react. When they were actually young needed me therefore considerably, absolutely nothing rips with my center even more than to be helped remind the women I abandoned. Developed by Steal Dog crate Gamings, Maintain Talking and Nobody Takes off requires cautious attention from an encouraged 2 to 6 gamers. This was actually whatever I genuinely expected from this second publication in the collection as well as more. Because yet another video game can be found in package that is far better in comparison to Infinite War in just about every method is quite frightening. No, I advise XOne S create that can upscale resolution when attached to a 4K TV, on XONE Slim you possess even more features as well as the best online solution also ... more applications, Backward compatibilty, EA get access to and also an align of games delivered as promised. Tomb Raider is actually an Action-Adventure activity that presents gamers to the origin from among the most identifiable computer game symbols from everlasting, Lara Croft. In not one other activity rate, pluck, methods as well as clearheadedness are actually required, as that is located in the activity from football. That is actually why our team are actually below - telling you the activities that you must play due to the fact that we've tried them out ourselves. I so appreciate that nothing at all, completely nothing came very easy to anybody in this publication. In the timeless preamble Wenger always remembered prohibiting Mars pubs just before his first game in charge, in the past in 1996. You see, this is exactly what I enjoy regarding Salinger's thus often objected to job - its own ability to stir ideas and also point of views that surpass the manual and also the plot document and make you presume, and possibly -simply possibly - be a touch defiant, also. I always examined pre purchasing as an approach to get an activity as well as you get on a budget. Because Time 3 isn't in full development yet, this time there is actually no after-credits cutscene by the end to provide our team an examine for The Strolling Lifeless Video game: Season 3. But do not fret, the downloadable episodic video game collection will be back for more with The Walking Lifeless Activity Incident 12 to 16! The only light quibble is actually periodic structure pop-in as the video game is actually a little late to fill the neighboring views, however aside from that, I am actually commonly questioning how in the world this thing is actually operating on a PS4. The activity, which finds you exploring a zombie-infested Wild West, is a refreshingly lengthy experience that you could definitely drain your teeth right into, which contrasts along with the a lot more arcade-like experiences delivered through various other video games. Bind Area's brand new task, Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, just released a brand new teaser exposing a fast illustration from the program's initial cast. Desires is actually a little intricate to reveal, but if you're innovative and also excelled in the Create Setting of LittleBigPlanet, at that point this is your greatest video game. Substantial congratulations to your for writing your blog and also cookbook simultaneously - I dealt with the same difficulty in 2013 and can totally relate - this is actually fun/exciting/exhilarating, but may be incredibly nerve-racking and also make you think that you're regularly in a grind.

In Washington DC: disrupting the notion of what public education and what black boys can do and be #JACBA Newsletter 2Feb2018
These kids started a book club for minority boys. It's the most popular club in school.
Tumblr media
The club dates back to December, when a fifth-grader complained one morning that his lackluster results on a citywide English exam didn't reflect his true reading abilities.
The principal, Mary Ann Stinson, placed a book she had lying around - "Bad Boy: A Memoir," by Walter Dean Myers - in his hands and told him to start reading.
The boys quickly became engrossed in the 2001 book about Myers's childhood in New York's Harlem.
The club's sponsor and the boys meet once or twice a week at 8:15 a.m. - a half-hour before the first bell rings - and use the book to launch into conversations about their own experiences with race, identity and adolescence.
"It's a blessing to be in this predicament, to have kids who are becoming ravenous readers," Redmond said. "We're disrupting the notion of what public education can be and what little black boys can do and be."

Bonnier Publishing USA's Five Pillars of Positive Children's Books
Bonnier Publishing USA has developed five pillars to guide its children's imprints in publishing books that have a positive impact on kids and teens
During an all-hands planning meeting this past fall, the children's team at Bonnier Publishing USA realized they'd hit a critical point. Their titles were coalescing around five themes, which they dubbed their "five pillars": acceptance, anti-bullying, awareness, diversity, and empowerment. According to Sonali Fry, publisher of the children's book group, "while we had already been publishing books connected to some of these themes," such as Freedom in Congo Square by Carole Boston Weatherford and R. Gregory Christie, which received a 2017 Caldecott Medal and a Coretta Scott King Honor, "we wanted to refocus our lists so that we hit every one of them."
"We feel that now, more than ever, it's important to give kids stories that reflect the world they live in and encourage them to imagine how they could make it better," says Fry. While, she says, the kids' team doesn't limit its acquisitions to books focused on one of the pillars, "there's often a natural connection to at least one. These themes unite the types of books we're passionate about, which helps shape our lists and, in turn, define who we are as a publisher," she says.

Greenwich Academy quilts its commitment to MLK's message
Tumblr media
The colorful quilt squares are inked with words like unity, resilience, trust, hope and harmony. Crafted by the Greenwich Academy student body and staff, they are a patchwork representation of Martin Luther King Jr.'s message of equality and inclusion.
"In order to memorialize the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's assassination, each advisory was asked to create a square for the quilt," said senior Elisha Osemobor. "This quilt represents our dedication as a school to follow the principles and behaviors of the beloved community in our everyday lives."
Greenwich Academy's quilt was inspired by the work of African-American artist Faith Ringgold who combined images and text in "story quilts," among other projects. An outspoken civil rights supporter, she demonstrated against the exclusion of black and female artists by New York's Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art from 1968 to 1970. Her work was later shown at the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Children, Culture, Community: Muskegon Museum of Art celebrates diversity with a variety of events this winter
Tumblr media
This year, the museum's annual children's book illustrator exhibition highlights a Hispanic artist and Native American author. Thunder Boy, Jr.: Illustrations by Yuyi Morales runs through May 20 and includes illustrations and sketches by Yuyi Morales for Sherman Alexie's children's book.
Morales herself has an inspiring story. Although she loved drawing as a child, she wasn't a trained artist and studied physical education in Mexico, later working as a swim coach. She moved to America in 1994 with her husband and young son and felt isolated and alone without a job or friend, barely knowing English.
That all changed when she discovered children's picture books in a San Francisco area public library, learning English by also reading the books to her son. Inspired by the vivid colors and visual stories, Morales took up painting and enrolled in a class on writing for children.
Morales since has written several original stories, including Viva Frida, which received the 2015 Pura Belpre Medal for illustration, as well as the 2015 Caldecott Award Honor.

Governor's reply to student's letter is lost opportunity
Hope Osgood, a 16-year-old High School student, wrote to Maine Gov. Paul LePage to express her concern about the negative impact the pending repeal of internet "net neutrality" rules could have on her schoolwork. His response: "Hope. Pick up a book and read!"
The episode calls to mind a famous letter exchange between the Soviet leader Yuri Andropov and a Maine school child, Samantha Smith. Andropov, who became General Secretary of the Communist Party (in effect, leader of the Soviet Union) on Nov. 10, 1982, was hardly a gentle or sentimental man.
In November 1982, Samantha, then a 10-year-old elementary school student living in Manchester, Maine, wrote a famous letter to Andropov in which she expressed, with child-like sincerity and naiveté, her concern about the risk of nuclear war between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. during the Reagan era.
Samantha's visit inspired other exchanges of child goodwill ambassadors and may even have signaled the start of a thaw in U.S.-Soviet relations.
It is ironic that the remarkable achievements of Samantha's short life were inspired by the words of a political leader who had neither experience in nor sympathy for democracy. If Andropov could react appropriately to Samantha Smith, why couldn't a democratically elected governor do at least as well with Hope Osgood?

Film based on Simcoe author's book gets Oscar nod
Tumblr media
The Breadwinner, an animated movie based on the book by Simcoe author Deborah Ellis, has been nominated for an Academy Award.
Nominations for the 90th annual Oscars were announced Tuesday morning, with The Breadwinner getting the nod in the animated feature category.
"You always hope for the good things and today it happened," Ellis said in a phone interview.
Ellis, who was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2016, won't travel to Los Angeles for the March 4 event. In February of last year, Ellis announced publicly she would not travel south of the 49th after the U.S. government attempted to implement sanctions to restrict immigrants from predominantly Muslim nations.

Oscar-nominated film 'The Breadwinner' depicts daily danger in Afghanistan
It's a delicate balancing act, bringing something like Canadian author Deborah Ellis's novel - published in 2000 - to the big screen.
While aimed at children, the story directly confronts the misogyny and chauvinism of contemporary Afghanistan.
It may sound a little much for a children's story but then perhaps that's underestimating the book's youthful audience. Saara Chaudry, the 13 year-old Canadian actress who voices Parvana, says it was "shocking" when she first read Ellis's book and its two follow-ups. "I was ignorant," she says. "Living in a First World country, I didn't know. Having read the books and seen these different stories, it opened my eyes to a whole new world that I never really knew."
Impressively, the team behind the film produced an online study guide, at www.thebreadwinner.com to complement the film. "If young people watch a film like The Breadwinner, they can start to explore answers," says Twomey. "For me, the whole thing is about education. It's not about easy answers ... anything we can do to have young adults ask questions and understand the complexity of places like Afghanistan [is a good thing]."

Oscars 2018: Nearly every animated feature nominee spotlights women. Finally.
IN THE entire first decade of the Oscars' animated feature category, which launched in 2001, only one woman - "Persepolis" creator Marjane Satrapi - received a nomination.
It's a measure of just how much has changed that on Tuesday, women received nods for four of the five animated feature nominees.
"We're delighted that Nora is in the limelight this year, of course," "Breadwinner" producer Tomm Moore, a two-time Oscars nominee, tells The Washington Post's Comic Riffs on Tuesday morning, "as well as her talented screenwriter Anita Doron and indeed, the book's author, Deborah Ellis, and our executive producer Angelina Jolie.

Forgive me, time out while I brag.  This January 2018, I am named a Super Lawyer, in the top 5% of lawyers, as voted by my peers.
Every year, Super Lawyers evaluates lawyers across the country for its annual list of top attorneys. Each candidate is measured against 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. Nominees from more that 70 practice areas are considered. The patented multiphase selection process is rigorous and methodical. I have a personalised badge with my name on it, but I have had difficulty downloading the badge. It requires a webmaster, not.  Jay W. MacIntosh
I cannot remember a time when I bragged about something just because I needed to brag without need for a result. Possibly when I was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Most often, I bragged because I wanted a acting job, or a client, or something. Phi Beta Kappa was something else. I knew I had gotten good grades in high school and in college. But, I was in Drama School. That wasn’t considered a “scholastic pursuit”. An honor like Phi Beta Kappa was reserved for “scholars”.  You can imagine my surprise and thrill when I got news at the University of Georgia that I had been elected to Phi Beta Kappa. I remember Hugh Mills, a member of the Selection Committee, told me later that I was an exception to the rule because my highest grades were in History and Science. Go figure.
Those of you who know me, know that I decided to go to law school in 1995, when I was 58 years old. At that time, I was acting, selling real estate, and engaged in a mean-spirited divorce. When I had to file bankruptcy, my family law attorney backed out of the case, unable to help me in Bankruptcy Court. I represented myself. Big mistake. I ended up “giving away the farm” – properties that were mine by law – to be rid of things pulling me under.  I wish I had hired an attorney.  Could-a, would-a, should-a.
I remember the day I signed the final agreement – April 1995. It was over. Damn! What had I done? My family law attorney was at the hearing and helping me from the sidelines. I kept arguing with the judge, who finally told me, “Sit down, Ms. MacIntosh! Otherwise, I will hold you in contempt of court!” It was that day that I decided to give soon-to-be-ex what he wanted- my rights to our and my money – most of which was tied up in a Pacific Palisades property.  At some point that morning, my attorney said, “Let’s go to lunch. I will treat you.”  We went to some café and got a sandwich, sitting outside under a tree. While I was drowning my sorrows in grease, she said, “Have you ever thought about going to law school?” “NO, of course not.” “Well, if you ever do, I will write you a letter of recommendation.” That was how it started.
That day, I asked her what I had to do, getting names of nearby ABA-accredited law schools. That day, I began ordering catalogs. From then on, powered by anger, frustration, and despair, I took the LSAT, got letters of recommendations from attorneys, mailed four applications, and got accepted at Whittier Law School, starting August 1996. No one thought I could do it.  I was 59.
I graduated from Whittier in May 1999. I was 61.
Passed the California Bar Exam in 2000. I was 62. I started practicing law in 2001, in Los Angeles. I was living in an apartment in Brentwood. My Law Office was a post office box on San Vicente. My intention was to join a Law Firm, as soon as I could find a good “fit”.
Needless to say, I was a “boutique item”. At my age, few established attorneys were interested. Plus, I had a hard time, taking orders from men younger that I was. Meanwhile, while I was sending out applications and resumes, I started getting cases. The first one was a friend of a friend who needed help with an outstanding warrant in the Beverly Hills Criminal Court. I got him off on a misdemeanor. The second one was a woman who needed an entertainment attorney to help her set up a corporation to raise monies for a theatre production and obtain rights to the book she planned to use. The third was a Pilipino woman who got “wrongfully terminated” from Union Bank of California Private Bank – a discrimination case. We settled that case.
I continued practicing law, taking discrimination cases, practicing entertainment law, and taking other odds and ends as a sole practitioner, plaintiff’s attorney, suing huge corporations and government entities, until the day my husband and I boarded the plane to Nice, France. Doctor’s Orders. If I continued the way I was going, I would either have a heart attack or a stroke. OK. I get it. If I stay here, I will practice law. I love it. I am good at it. I must go somewhere I cannot practice law. If I stay in the U.S., I will practice law – go to Federal Court, if we move states.
So, here I am – at the age of 80, a Super Lawyer in Southern California. I did what few try to do.  I am proud. Most of all, I am honored.
Signing off for now, JAY
SUPER LAWYER – January 2018 Forgive me, time out while I brag.  This January 2018, I am named a Super Lawyer, in the top 5% of lawyers, as voted by my peers.

Session 2 of the Program
Subject: Examining lack of representation within the classroom while exploring the benefits of including multicultural children’s literature as a possible solution.
Topic: Using culturally authentic children’s literature to breakdown stereotypes regarding race, gender, ability, familial structures/sexuality, to enforce a sentiment of inclusiveness and tolerance in the young minds of students.
Objective: Participants will be able to identify certain stereotypes in society and how these stereotypes can be reflected within literature. Participants will also learn that the idea of multicultural literature extends beyond looking just at racial representations but the representations of various facets such as gender, professions, family structures, and sexuality. Participants will be able to relate their findings to the readings provided and expected to educate their peers on their particular topic. They will analyze children’s books that will be provided in order to see what kinds of books are inclusive and showcase quality children’s literature.
Purpose: The purpose of this session is to convey the fact that multicultural children’s literature should be inter-sectional. Race is not the only aspect that needs to be addressed in order to build tolerance within children. As the world grows more and more diverse in different ways including gender, sexuality, ability, and family, students should be exposed to these different facets to be exposed to different people and lifestyles in order to internalize the same message we want them to take when it comes to race; the message that everyone is different and should be valued and respected.
Summary of Tasks: To begin the session, participants will be split up into four different groups. Each group will be given a different aspect that they will be in charge of looking into for the session. The groups will be assigned the following:
Group one: Stereotypes projected upon girls/women and boys/men.
Group two: Stereotypes based on ability. (How people with different disabilities are portrayed by others).
Group three: Stereotypes based on race.
Group four: Stereotypes about family structures and sexuality.
Giving the students ten minutes to complete the task, they will use a sheet from a Post-It Easel Pad, to write different stereotypes that they have seen in society or literature that relate to their topic. After each group is finished they will stick the sheet onto the wall and each group will be given five minutes to go around the room and read what the other groups have come up with. After this is complete, each group will be asked to present what stereotypes they have included for their topic, as well as how they are portrayed in children’s literature. Example: For stereotypes about girls, the group could have said “girls/women cook and clean” and they could say children’s literature often portrays the mother figure as doing such activities.
Each group will be given a reading corresponding to their topic.
Group one:  Gender Stereotypes in Children’s Books: Their Prevalence and Influence on Cognitive and Affective Development by Sharyl Bender Peterson and Mary Alyce Lach.
Group two: Disability Bias in Children’s Literature by Ellen Rubin and Emily Strauss Watson.
Group three: Gender, Racial, and Ethnic Misrepresentation in Children’s Books: A Comparative Look by Hani Morgan
Group four: Investigating Shifts in Diverse Family Structures in Newberry Award and Honor Books Utilizing U.S. Census Data, 1930-2010 by Shannon M. Despain, Michael O. Tunnell, Brad Wilcox, and Timothy G. Morrison with a focus on pages 329 to 334, and look at the overall results from each decade.
While going over these readings, they should summarize the main argument and points of the articles in order to share with their peers later on.
After reading the articles pertaining to their topic, participants will be given various books that have to do with their topic. These books have been selected due to the way they address these topics without giving in to stereotypes. (These are recommended books, any books about the topics that fit the criteria of quality multicultural literature can be used; it does not have to be these books).
Group one will analyze: Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman, The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, Allie’s Basketball Dream by Barbara E. Barber, William’s Doll by Charlotte Zolotow,  I am Jazz by Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings, Jacob’s New Dress by Sarah and Ian Hoffman.
Group two will analyze: My Brother Charlie by Holly Robinson Peete, We’ll Paint the Octopus Red by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen, The Alphabet War by Diane Burton Robb, Keep Your Ear on the Ball by Genevieve Petrillo, and Just Because by Rebecca Elliot.
Group three will analyze: City Shapes by Diana Murray, Thunder Boy Jr. by Sherman Alexie, The Quickest Kid in Clarksville by Pat Zietlow Miller, Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena,  Mamá The Alien by Rene Colato Lainez.
Group four will analyze: Jalapeno Bagels by Natasha Wing, Donovan’s Big Day by Leslea Newman, Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born by Jamie Lee Curtis, Who’s In a Family by Robert Skutch, Daddy, Papa, and Me by Leslea Newman.
The groups will be given 10 minutes to look over these books. The groups should compare the books to what they wrote about stereotypes. They should answer the following questions: Does this book include any stereotypes we have identified? How does this book break stereotypical boundaries? What message does this book convey to readers? Who would benefit from being exposed to this book? How do these books connect to the content in the readings they were given?
After, each group will present to the class by sharing their findings and taking the opportunity to educate the other groups on their topic.
Materials/Equipment:
Post-It Easel Pad (or posters) for students to write on and hang up.
Quality multicultural children’s books that encompass the following topics: gender stereotypes, disability stereotypes, racial stereotypes, and family/sexuality stereotypes.
Readings that are provided for groups to discuss.
