Constantin Hansen, Et selskab af danske kunstnere i Rom, 1837 (Wikimedia Commons).
A very special Eighteen-Thirties Thursday today as I have finally learned the correct word for those wacky huge tobacco pipes that were in vogue with Europeans in the early to mid-19th century.
It is a Turkish style of pipe called a chibouk ("stick"); also romanized čopoq, ciunoux or tchibouque. The more you know! Constantin Hansen's 1837 painting of Danish artists in Rome has many lovely details in high resolution, including chibouk pipes.
