Note
I'm working on a small ESC project atm for which I'm looking at some national finals from this season and the 2021 season. And I noticed that there used to be a lot more internal selections two years ago compared to nowadays. Do you have any idea why that was the case/ why it changed? (I know it's a really random question but I thought you'd be the best person to ask :))
There are many countries that have their established national selections that are organised every year. UMK, Melodifestivalen, MGP, DMGP, Söngvakeppnin, Eesti Laul, Supernova, Festivali i Këngës, Festival da Canção just to name a few.
Then there are those countries that try different selection methods every few years, depending on the participating broadcaster, their financial situation and if there are any established artists showing interest to be selected internally. Some examples of those are Netherlands, Belgium (with two broadcasters), Moldova, Spain, San Marino, France, Malta, Georgia, Australia and Israel. Sometimes they organise a full national final, sometimes they choose just the artist via a talent show (Malta's X Factor 2019 & 2022, Georgian Idol 2019 & 2020), and sometimes they make an internal selection.
In 2022 TRM was planning to hold a full national selection but cancelled it after the preliminary round when it became clear there was no competition for Trenulețul. San Marino's 1in360 was scrapped after only one year letting Senhit & Flo Rida to represent the country and then Una voce per San Marino was founded in 2022. Israel, Slovenia and France also got big names with Noa, Joker Out and La Zarra so organising a NF would have been a waste of everyone's time and money, and so forth. This leads to the number of national selections changing from year to year, and I must admit that I haven't been invested in the subject enough to notice any strong trends.
2021 national final season is very exceptional since it was strongly effected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the 2020 contest got cancelled, a total of 24 countries decided to send their representative again the next year, and that lead to one-year hiatus for many established national selections. Most of those then returned again in 2022 👇
Czechia: Benny Cristo won Eurovision Song CZ 2020, was internally selected in 2021, in 2022 they had national selection ESCZ 2022 Iceland: Daði & Gagnamagnið won Söngvakeppnin 2020, were internally selected for 2021, Söngvakeppnin returned in 2022
Serbia: Hurricane won Beovizija 2020, were internally selected for 2021, in 2022 they had national selection Pesma za Evroviziju '22
Latvia: Samanta Tina won Supernova 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Supernova returned in 2022
Slovenia: Ana Soklič won EMA 2020, was internally selected for 2021, EMA returned in 2022
Australia: Montaigne won Eurovision - Australia Decides 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Australia Decides returned in 2022
Israel: Eden Alene won Rising Star 2020, was internally selected for 2021, in 2022 The X Factor Israel was used as the national selection
Romania: Roxen's entry was selected via Selecția Națională 2020, she was internally selected for 2021 as was her song, and Selecția Națională returned in 2022
Ukraine: Go_A won Vidbir 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Vidbir returned in 2022
Malta: Destiny was chosen via The X Factor 2020, internally selected for 2021, and in 2022 Malta Eurovision Song Contest was used as the national selection

San Marino: Who We Are is Bad at Eurovision
San Marino: Who We Are is Bad at Eurovision
After threatening to withdraw from Eurovision, San Marino launched their revolutionary international final 1 in 360. After months of speculation, crowd-funding and wildcard heats, a winner was finally crowned in Bratislava (a good 900km away from San Marino). The Maltese singer Jessika featuring German rapper Jenifer Brening will represent the landlocked microstate with the song Who We Are in…

I’m more mad that IROL decided to drop out of “Who We Are” and got replaced by Jenifer B. with cringy lyrics to her part. Jessika is fine on her own with this song if the producers let her done that. IROL is actually a great rapper when given a decent song for him to rap. I hope he gets to reprsent his country of San Marino in the future.

Sara de Blue was robbed of the chance to represent San Marino, “Out of the Twilight” was clearly the class of the field and her extraordinary voice gives it so much life.  Everyone was rooting for her... yet the juries gave the win to Jessika and Jenifer (one juror didn’t even care about the music and spent his time questioning people’s costume choices).
I for one will keep enjoying Sara’s track and here’s hoping she tries for Eurovision again

In Belgian news paper De Standaard. Do you like to hear a song about LGBTQ-love on the Eurovision Song Contest ? It has never been done in 62 years!!! People are pro or totally against it as it seems. But that shows that it moves people. Homosexuality is still a taboo. Please like or share my video on Youtube to express your opinion. ESC2019 Preshow #22
22. IRELAND Sarah McTernan - “22″ SemiFinal 2, #02
youtube
Oh come on guys putting her at #22 was just a given, bear with me. Don’t tell me you did not see it coming. 😏
ENTRY ANALYSIS
What I didn’t see coming however was a lovely entry from Ireland, but here we are. 😊 I’m not sure how we even got here? RTE claims they conducted an “extensive search” and got over 350+ submissions and the best they could come up with is apparently a generic bubblegum pop song by a muppet woman who was rejected from 1in360?
Still I enjoy this song. There’s something warm about “22″ that always makes it a pleasant listening experience. It sounds retro in a timeless, rather than dated, sort of way. Like, a song from Hairspray maybe?  (which Sarah definitely should be using because her giant fluffy ponytail keeps battering her face in that VC  😂)
Tumblr media
I quite enjoy the lyrics as well: they’re banale and very silly, but in a good way:
~Everytime I’m with somebody I’m confusing him with you~
How does that even work, like... you decide to date and then sleep with someone and you spend the entire time imagining he’s someone else?  😂 I mean, think about it for a sec: you’re hooking up and letting some random dude bone you (or you bone some random dude/chick we don’t heteroshame/topshame here) but all you can think about is your ex? Imagine how awkward your sex life must be. 🤭 but let us move on before this turns into a Jack Whitehall sketch.
QUALIFICATION ODDS: not qualifying.
Not a chance, sadly enough . "22″ joyfully bounces around in the Leonor Andrade Zone of “There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with this entry, but it’s never going to qualify, despite their best efforts” and it’s sad because I hardly ever like Ireland in ESC and when I do they always get drawfucked 😭 (RIP Sinéad Mulvey & Molly Sterling)
The issues Sarah struggles with though are problems which Leonor (or Svala, or Lidia Isac) never had deal with: Sarah’s live performances are sort of... listless? Lifeless? Slow? Inert? Definitely not something you’d want to pair with a cheerful and uptempo song such as “22″ It creates a disconnect that shouldn’t be there. As much as I regret saying it, I think Ireland will be the last place of the year. They’re just waiting to become an embarrassing mess, and when it happens you can be damn’ sure I’ll be there to affectionately poke fun at it, like always :-)
Projected Placement: 14th-18th in the SemiFinal.
