So (sadly) religious themes are very heavy in Hindi soaps and a few things/tropes/editing choices have stood out to me as a long time intermittent viewer of Hindi soaps about Aryan/Imlie and Imlie/Aditya (This is probably going to end up being a very this is why Aryan and Imlie are happening and Aditya can go suffer for the rest of his life with Malini)

1) I personally cannot recall a time where it’s the female lead that takes off her mangalsurtra and drops it in a religious fire in front of a Durga statue no less

2) The editing of Aryan’s entrance (which was a trope I guess? why do car related things happen for first meetings in soaps? I can name at least three other shows that have done this) along with Aditya’s mom’s prayers for Imlie. Nothing is more powerful than a mom’s prayers in a Hindi soap. This happens on more than one occasion. Prayers mostly asking for a better life for Imlie. Factor in Aryan’s sister and mom’s prayers for him asking for him to basically move on and heal (also get married because what self respecting Indian mother would not ask for that)

3) This whole trope following the line “You watch, Devimaya will bring happiness to Imlie’s life soon” in front of a mandir 

4)This whole moment with a statue of Ganesh in the background 

5) No reason for this one. I just liked the moment

work/review:

work has been really productive lately and i really do love it especially cause everyday presents so many chances to learn something new

i love going to the office! and i appreciate my officemates a lot kasi pantay pantay lang kami ng status so we're all going through the same things together and i just love how they come to me with their problems and i can go to them with mine

i honestly and constantly wish na hindi na talaga need mag board exam kasi sobrang hassle lang din talaga eh

our profs are all busy too

pero okay lang kasi some of the people who took the boards before us suggested naman talaga to review at your own pace and to even just read the modules as much as you can; not necessarily join every class, basta youre always obtaining more knowledge everyday

im just really lucky to be able to learn so much from my bosses and seniors and sa site mismo kasi sakanila and doon ko naman talaga matututunan lahat when it comes to our line of work

family:

we got a new puppy! we named him hiro and hes a shihtzu as well and we got him for the sole purpose of finally letting willow have a playmate/brother and so far theyre getting along quite nicely naman and he is the cutest puppy ever

i miss my brother a lot and i really cant wait for him to come home

we finally have a beach trip coming up soon! we're going to our place in batangas for a quick getaway kasi my dad invited his dj friends to perform there (and my dad is performing too!) so its going to be a small party and i hope our guests actually enjoy the free show

Nate Sewell - early years till turning

Okay, so I had this idea for a short fic spanning several years of Nate’s life, but that required that I go research the British Royal Navy, ranks and progression, and I ended up falling into a very, very deep rabbit hole. I spent about two hours yesterday just reading up and figuring out how things would have gone for him, and I think at this point I have a more or less solid idea of what Nate’s career would have been like.

I was just chatting with @mepheesto and she shared this post by @queerbrujas with me, and we both more or less came to the same conclusions, in a way that makes it so that Silvia’s ideas mesh perfectly well with mine, and one could very well be a continuation of the other, which is awesome. Go read Silvia’s post, it’s enlightening and she also includes some bits from canon that Mishka shared and which shed some light on the whole thing.

I’m going to talk specifically about Nate here, because it’s the Royal Navy bit that interests me and that I researched. Rest under the cut! It could get long.

Edit: DISCLAIMER: I haven’t read the Book 3 demo cause I want to go in blind, so I have no idea if there’s anything in there that might change what I say here ahahaha. Anyway here we go.

SO. Let’s assume that Silvia is right and Nate is, in fact, half Indian. It’s not really a far-fetched idea, especially considering the general political climate at the time and Nate’s personal details that Mishka has shared now and then in asks. By our estimations, knowing that Nate is about ~330 years old, he should have been born close to 1691, and lived more or less in the early 1700s. This is important for one main reason: the East India Company. 

By the 1700s, the East India Company was already in full swing and trading in the East Indies. While the rule of the Company in India effectively began in  1757, the Company itself was founded back in 1600, and established trade routes with the East Indies to bring back basic commodities like cotton, silk, salt, spices, tea, and opium.

It wouldn’t, therefore, be a far-fetched idea to assume that Nate’s father was involved with the East India Company, and thus found himself traveling to India more or less often, where he might have married an Indian woman and conceived Nate. Going from Silvia’s findings, Nate was then raised British in India, which means that he would have also been in an environment suited to learn Hindi growing up.

The idea that Nate wanted for nothing growing up also suggests that his family was wealthy, which would put him in a position of privilege amongst the gentry, even if not titled. And if his family was wealthy, then it would make sense to conclude that his father worked with the East India Company and probably held stakes in it and was part of the upper echelons of the Company.

Following this line of thought, we can also draw the conclusion that 1) he had more or less a background in sailing, even if tangentially, and, more importantly, 2) he had connections and at least some sway because of his family name.

Now, there are three avenues for a “gentleman” (or, in Nate’s case, a “young gentleman”), i.e. a member of the gentry who thus holds a higher social position than regular seamen on board, might have joined the Navy. And this is where things get interesting:

1) The traditional way: Nate would have joined the Royal Navy at age 12, probably to be taken on as an officer’s servant (the highest and most important position a boy–that’s literally the rank–could hold). There, he would have studied and learned the ropes of sailing while also serving a commissioned officer. After about 3 years, at the very least, he would have been promoted to the rank of midshipman, effectively becoming an aspiring officer. Being a midshipman also would have put him in a position of relative power, as middies were held above most seamen because of their social status. Once a midshipman, Nate would have continued to train and study for another three years, which would have him completing the required time at sea to take the Lieutenant exam and finally earn his commission (do note that passing the exam didn’t automatically get him a commission, but rather turned him into “passed midshipman” awaiting a vacancy). And so on and so forth, climbing positions based on a number of factors.

2) The less-liked and more-frowned-upon but still valid way: Less likely, since this would have required Nate to be born, at the very least, in 1714. Nate would have attended the Royal Naval Academy (founded in 1729) to study sailing for three years, which would have earned him two years of time at sea, with none of the actual time being at sea at all. He would have then joined a ship as a midshipman-by-order, paid less than midshipmen who trained at sea, but a middy all the same. The school, however, was unpopular in the Navy, because officers enjoyed the privilege of having servants and preferred the traditional method of training officers via apprenticeship. All of this said, even if Nate had been born at a time when he could have gone to the Academy, I personally believe that his family wouldn’t have allowed it, specifically because the school was unpopular.

3) The highly illegal but generalized way: Now, remember how I said Nate’s family was probably part of the gentry? This is where that’s important. His father, having social and political connections, could have used his sway to have Nate’s name entered in ships’ logs from a young age, without him actually being on said ships. This would have made it so that he would have racked up the required years at sea to become a midshipman or, less often, a lieutenant, without ever actually having been at sea. It would have saved Nate the arduous and sometimes grueling training at sea since he was 12, and he would have been able to comfortably join a ship at about age 17-18, as a full midshipman. I personally believe that if Nate had heard that his father was doing this (which I wouldn’t put past him), he would have opposed the notion, even as a child, and would have insisted on doing thing the right way. Which is also the hard way, but the payoff would probably have been much greater, and he would have earned his place, however far he went.

All of the above said, I choose to go with 1), even if 3) wouldn’t be a surprise at all. This makes it so that Nate might have spent his first 10ish years of life in India, being raised British, and having tutored, as Silvia explained, to then be sent “home” to England so that he might join the Navy when he turned 12 and worked his way up in the Navy at a time before all-out naval warfare had quite broken out (that was closer to the mid 1700s, if my research doesn’t fail me). At this point in time, the British Navy was starting to recover from their horrible defeat at the hands of the Dutch in the Anglo-Dutch wars, and had already helped defeat France in the War of the Grand Alliance, starting to establish their foothold as the largest maritime force in the world.

So, with this bit of background, and after my two hours of research, this is what I imagine Nate’s career, following a childhood being raised British in India, must have looked like:

- Age 12, circa 1703: Nate joins the Royal Navy, ranked Boy, the lowest possible rank one can hold on a ship. Being of the gentry, he is taken on as an officer’s servant and begins learning the ropes and applying himself. Studious as he is, Nate probably had no issue following the theory and the classes taught on board, but the more physical part, and getting used to life at sea, could not have been easy for him.

- Age 15, circa 1706: After completing his three years of time at sea, Nate is promoted to midshipman. He becomes one of the group known as the cockpit mates, who berth and mess in the cockpit, largely midshipmen like himself. Being a midshipman means that, because of his social standing, he now ranks higher than most petty officers, and is given responsibilities by his superiors when necessary (which could include commanding a small vessel if necessary). Being a midshipman also means that he is now considered an aspiring officer, which is to say, someone whose aim is to take the Lieutenant exam and one day earn his commission. He continues to apply himself for the next three years, showing excellent discipline and self-control, and probably an adeptness for strategy, charting, and a number of other areas that appeal more to his brains than to his brawns. He is, of course, still expected to perform the physical tasks expected of his position, and thus he’s filling in and gaining muscle, in addition to a nice tan.

- 1707:  The Kingdom of Great Britain is formed by the Act of Union, which had the effect of merging the Scottish navy into the Royal Navy, effectively making the Royal Navy the largest maritime force in the world, which maintains superiority in financing, tactics, training, organization, social cohesion, hygiene, logistical support and warship design. They would hold this title for the next century or so.

- Age 18-19, circa 1709: It’s been six years since Nate first shipped out as a boy of 12, and he is now a sailor in full, with all the knowledge and experience to back it up. Now that he meets the time at sea requirement of six years, he is able to take the Lieutenant exam, which he passes with flying colors, having had to stand before a board of three members of the Admiralty and answer their questions. Thus, Nate becomes a passed midshipman, and awaits the day he receives his Lieutenant commission.

- Nate spends the next 2 years or so as a passed midshipman awaiting his commission. Usually, passed midshipmen are placed on a roster to be promoted as vacancies open up, but Nate does have an advantage, and it is that he has connections and a family name that holds sway. Thus, as a gentleman, he is placed somewhere at the top of the list of candidates to promotion, and doesn’t have to wait as much as he might have had to to receive his commission. Aged 21 or 22, his commission finally comes, and he is sent to a new ship, with a new crew and captain, to serve.

Throughout these years, the War of Spanish succession (1701-1714) is in full force. Once it’s over, Britain is granted Gibraltar and Menorca, which gives them a foothold to begin establishing their naval empire.

- Now that Nate holds a position as a Commissioned Officer, gaining higher ranks is not simply a matter of application and hard work. At this point, being promoted largely involves a number of other factors: favoritism, likability and popularity are, unfortunately, large players, together with achievement. He does, however, still hold sway because of his family name, and I imagine he makes a name for himself as a man who runs a tight, yet efficient, ship while simultaneously not being hated, in large part thanks to his congeniality and generally friendly disposition. It’s a bit of a balancing act, like walking on a tightrope, and he does fairly well, all things considered.

- Finally, after a number of years serving as a Lieutenant, Nate is promoted to Master and Commander and given command of his own ship, probably a frigate. By then, he’s probably in his mid-to-late-20s. And it is at this point in his naval career that something goes horribly wrong. Tragedy befalls his ship, his crew, and himself. He barely makes it out alive, no longer human, but something else, something more. Enter Nathaniel Sewell, vampire. His career in the Royal Navy is thus cut short, and his human life ends when it was barely beginning.

It was like June 2020 when I started playing with Kristine. That was also the time na she got laid off so we got the chance na magkalaro sa game full time. It was also the time na, I slowly opened up to her. Because I have strong walls eh, I do not let people come in my life easily. Since Kristine looks sincere and a listener to me, I gave her the way to get in. I talk about my rants about how my day goes and my relationship status with Joan. There is something about her that makes me want to know her more. There are many things na napagkakasunduan namin that leads to laughing and feeling na magaan lang kausap. I also liked that she is interested in the Game that I am playing, We shared things from the moment she started playing pc games back then, her ex gf's, her dramas in life, her fam, her girlfriend but not too much of it. Back then, I got curious about Kristine because of the stories that I have heard from Joan about her and her ex-gf and the toxicity of her relationship with Rose.

Then came an issue of this gaming headset that she wants to give me without malice as claimed by Kristine. Joan did not like the gesture. So, we talked secretly and talk about it. We agreed not to pursue the headset anymore.

December came and yah, we still play. I found out she resigned at her work.

I had an issue with a basher of my page, so I have to deactivate my gaming page and make an investigation who the hell is she.

There are times that I felt jealous whenever there is a guy flirting with her on the game and sometimes she makes me feel that she is jealous too when I do the same.

And then came February, we had an argument.

My thoughts went confused, concern at Pacsy, and at the same time jealous.

Felt bad because we made a promise to each other to be open and not keep secrets. But things fail.

I broke down and cried.

Then came Joan who confronted Kristine, and Pacsy without me knowing it because I was asleep when Joan hacked my phone. I lost all of my phone datas and apps.

And I did not like it. Joan should have talked the proper way but instead choose to hysterical all the time.

She discovered that, there is something between me and Kristine based on our exchange of chats in Messenger.

Since I'm woman enough to admit my fault, I did.

I admit that I fell to Kristine.

Joan blocked her in my Messenger first.

And next is IG.

CODM became an exception.

It was a week of pain and confusion and discoveries.

I have discovered that She admits that she felt the same way for me.

That she doesn't want to lose me too.

FEB 17: That night, we played, me, Pacsy and her. Dhanush invited me. I said sorry to them. And Kristine drop this line that it will be the last time she will talk to US. So I distant myself.

FEB 18: It was like 5pm, I called Pacs and I apologized to her of what happened and I cried because of what I feel in my situation. I told her, it was so hard to tell Joan that I fell in-love with her friend.

I asked Pacs not to update Kristine about me anymore because I wanna distant too.

FEB 18: 10:30 PM Pacsy texted me that Ktine asked her a favor to tell me that Joan is attacking her on messenger. I just said, it was noted.

FEB 19: Vertigo attacked me.

FEB 26: I received an XP rewards from Kristine. Just to be clear, giving away XP rewards is customized, you are the one who will choose who to give it to. And with that gesture, I knew in my heart she wants to talk and play with me. The past days Dhanush has been chatting me whenever he is playing with her. I told Dhanush I cant because she does not want to talk to me anymore and I wanna keep my distance too.

FEB 27-28

I played in CODM that night and I message her in the app, and invited her to play. Just a duo. At first she said, "Hi joan." then I told her, "Hindi nuh, hahaha." Then we play both off mic. And I notice she is messaging me while playing and says she misses me. "imy" I asked her "Kumusta" etc. At first I did not want to answer back I miss her too, because I am doubtful that it might be Kamille who's playing, but again, I knew it was her. So I told her, I miss this duo. Then she replied ":(".

Its like we had 2 games only, I said goodbye yet she tried to invite me again for another round for a squad with Dhanush but I have to leave the app and so I did.

FEB 29

We talked in CODM Global server app. We did not play instead we just talked. She told me she created an account in deviantart.com which is a website for artists, I actually have account there for art purposes. However she cant find my account there so I suggest how about Twitter. She opened up to me that day, as I remember, she apologized to me of the things she have done like how she cracked my secret to Joan etc. She said she does not normally say sorry to anyone yet she is doing it for me that day. I asked her if, "hindi ba kapani paniwala kapag ako ang nagsabi na mahal kita?"

She answered, she feels things the same way. She understands that my IG stories was for her mostly, and I claimed it. She told me she was scared to lose communication with me, that sometimes she feels like she's using another person just to get connected at me. And I get what she is saying. She said that she felt something for me.

I am sorry but the words we shared felt like... there is something.

Days have gone by, We played again. However I am hiding it.

1. The Sky is Pink - Ishaan at the Train Station

Ishaan Chaudhary gets a call from his sister, Aisha, when she is at her most helpless. Not much older than her, Ishaan is at a young age where his understanding of death may not be as mature as that of his parents. Till now, we have not seen how he is dealing with his younger sister’s illness and imminent death. In this scene, when Aisha calls up in tears, Ishaan’s first instinct as an elder brother is to be supportive. To reassure her, he tells that in their next life, through reincarnation they will all be reunited once again. He wants to be there for her, but inside, he is falling apart. As soon as she hangs up, he breaks down. All the pain, anger, sadness bursts out in the moment as he smashes his bag on the ground. In front of his parents and sister, he has to project himself as a strong individual. But in reality he is suffering as much as they are. The frustration builds inside him as he maintains composure in front of his family. And finally, in this scene, he lets it all out. The love between two siblings is rarely explored in films. This scene is so fresh and unique that it ultimately becomes the most emotional scene in the film. And without Rohit Saraf’s brilliant acting as the loving brother, this scene would have not been as passionate and impactful as it became.

2. Gully Boy - Doori Poem

While Gully Boy is at its core a film about a rapper’s rise to fame, it is also a commentary on the politics of modern society. The scene in which the Doori poem is recited in the background as Murad drives the car is the most socially relevant scene in the film. It brings out the brutal class divide omnipresent in Indian society. Murad and his passenger are both around the same age, in the same car, with a physical distance of a few feet, yet they are distant from each other. Her tears moved Murad, but his position as a driver prevented him from providing her with any comfort. He doesn’t have the aukaat (status) to help her and thus he continues to drive in silence. This strikes a chord with audience, some who are either of Murad’s status, or those who identify with the young woman. As passengers, people barely take notice of those in the driver’s seat, because there is an unspeakable divide that is difficult to bridge. And that’s what Murad uses as inspiration for the lyrics of his next song. The lines of the poem resonate well with the context. Kahne ko hum paas hai par, kitni doori hai, yeh bhi kaisi majboori hai….main yeh behte aasun pochun, itni meri aukaat nahin hai. They are close, yet they are far. And the barrier between them renders them helpless.

3. Soni - Conversation about Soni’s Misconduct

Soni is a film about women empowerment. But it isn’t just about women going up against men who knowingly discriminate against them. It is also about women facing small instances of prejudice even from somewhat progressive men. In this scene, Kalpana is having dinner with her family, as her husband and brother-in-law discuss Soni’s misconduct. It is clear from their casual tone that they find her aggressive behavior hilarious. According to them, women who behave in this manner come from violent homes. To them, it’s just a simple case of a woman who has faced violence at home leading to her relieving her frustrations at work. These two new-age men, sitting at a table with a female police officer, talk about women in such a stereotypical, mildly sexist manner. Even though Kalpana believes Soni’s actions crossed the line, she also attempts to understand the frustration that leads her to behave in a certain manner, which is why she remains silent at the table, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with her husband and brother-in-law. This scene shows the inherent sexism that seeps into modern families as well. There is blatant sexism everywhere, and that is easily recognizable. But, this hypocrisy and subtle patriarchy, exists in many homes, and is much more difficult to notice. And this scene makes us aware of it.

4. Section 375 - Food as a Metaphor for Justice

In this scene from Section 375, lawyer Tarun Saluja uses food as an analogy for the legal system, while explaining the intricacies of law to his former student, now opposing lawyer, Hiral Gandhi. This film, which deals with the twisted ways of the law, is summed up in this one scene. Tarun equates the different parts of the legal system, with different food items on the table. The dal is the prosecutor, trying to win in order to gain a promotion or a pay hike. The rice is the defense, trying to win for the fame, leading to a rise in fees. The next container is the judge, trying to win to reach a higher position in the court system, and get the opportunity to present landmark judgments. And the dahi is justice, which is forgotten in everyone else’s race for victory. The message that he attempts to convey is that everyone is in it for his/her own personal benefit. The courtroom is a battlefield for ambition, where the ideal is left far behind. That is core theme of the film. The absolute law, and ambitious professionals in the field, can lead to justice being left behind.

5. Article 15 - Asking about Caste

Ayan, a police officer from the city, is appalled by the caste discrimination in the small town where he is posted. He doesn’t have much knowledge of the intricacies of the caste system, as he has been living in an environment where caste barely has any bearing. In this scene, he is finally fed up of the constant references to caste by other members of the force working under him. His incredulity becomes apparent when he gathers all his subordinates, asking them about each of their castes and how they are related to the case on hand. It is quite a humorous scene as it is clear that he doesn’t actually have any interest in the caste system. He just wants to see to what extent these people will go to defend this discrimination, ultimately losing his cool at the end of it. The setup is meant to be hilarious, especially for those in the audience who are in the same boat as Ayan. But the comedic nature of the scene is just a means to show the grim reality. In many places across India, caste discrimination is such a common way of life, that even supposedly sensible people don’t protest against it. To Ayan, it is ridiculous. But for many others, it is their life, and that is the reality of society today.

So, I started reading tiger’s curse, because someone said it was good and deserved to be made into a tv show/movie... and I cannot even with it.

Here are my thoughts:

1. Why does she keep on feeding the tiger, who she doesn’t realise is human cursed to being a tiger, random foods (e.g. cupcakes, beef jerky, a protein bar, etc. etc. etc.)? 

2. And on that thought, how did she even get a job at a circus to look after a tiger? Like I am 99% sure you need to be qualified to do that? Or have some experience? But I guess any white girl can get a job looking after a wild animal right?

3. The king’s name is King Rajaram. So King King Ram... very nice. I can’t wait till they drink tea tea, and eat bread bread. 

I was waiting for some random person to be called Raja/Raj/Rajan... I mean this is an Indian character written by a white person after all?

4. Also, how did she get a visa to India in the span of like a week? Like I know that it took my parents WAY longer... Or is this because she’s a magical white girl? Also, how were her parents cool with sending their foster kid to India with some man that they met once? And why did she think it was normal that she was the only one left in charge of the tiger and transporting it to India?

Like she doesn’t even speak Hindi? What is she going to do when she gets there?

5. Every character that has an accent is depicted in a way that is really racist (I am talking about both the Italian circus owner and the swami/guru)

6. Which brings us to Durga. WHY THE HECK WOULD AN INDIAN GODDESS CHOOSE SOME RANDOM ORANG PUTIH (WHITE GIRL) TO BE THE CHOSEN ONE? 

“If I had to read this, then so does everyone: “Phet know girl is Durga’s favoured one. She struggle for tiger. I tell Anik: watch or goddess; special girl. I give indication-girl alone, brown hair, dark eyes. She be devoted to tiger, and her utterance are powerful like goddess melody. Help Tiger be free again. Tell Anik: discover Durga’s favoured one and bring her to me...”

7. At one point the main character says: he even looks powerful even barefoot with normal clothes... and I am like... wow, the Indian dude from India... looks powerful... even barefoot... In India... where people take off their shoes all the time? Wow. 

8. Also, to no one’s surprise, the Indian dude has blue eyes... how very Hrithik of him. What is up with white people and their bizarre fetishization of people of colour with blue eyes/green/hazel eyes?

9. At one point, a character goes: “In the language of the Hindus, Durga means ‘invincible one’”.

My question, dear author, is this: What, pray tell, is the language of the Hindus? 

10. At one point in the story, the main character says, and I quote: “I didn’t usually follow strange men around” and I am like, bitch you followed some dude and his tiger to India? 

11. So she at one point wears a lengha... but someone in the book calls it a “sharara” now, I don’t know enough about Indian clothing, but that is not the same as a lengha right?

12. She goes to India with no knowledge of Hindi or anything of Indian culture... which is fine (or is it?) but here are some questions: 

WHY DID SHE GO ALONE TO A FOREIGN COUNTRY? 

How did she manage to not get robbed/harrassed/kidnapped (she is literally by herself)?

So she eats Indian food... and doesn’t find it spicy... or get Delhi Belly...

Final thoughts:

 I decided to look up the author. Because you know? Life?

Anyways in regards to the Indian setting she (the author) apparently google shit to get authenticity:

I have never been to India though I would really like to visit. I had to research everything from what kinds of cars are popular there to what the Mumbai airport looked like to where the forests are found. I spent a lot of time on Google maps zooming into the cities and forests and trying to figure out the distances between places. 

And in regards to Indian mythology (because you know Hinduism is obviously mythology and not a religious belief of a great many people):

Indian mythology is very complex because the same god or goddess can have many incarnations with different names, appearances, and personality traits. My Indian mythology is “westernized” meaning I took the basic premise and either romanticized it to fit my theme or put my own spin on it so it made sense in my own mind. Bottom line-don’t try to pass a test on Indian mythology based on my version, however, I hoped to make it seem real enough that if you happened to visit Hampi you’d look for the statue and the entrance to Kishkindha.

In another interview, the author says she wanted her readers to feel like they went on a mini vacation like they got to see and feel and taste India and taste the chocolates (?!) and spices...

To which I say, okay? But how were you planning on doing that if you have never been to India? 

So, I haven’t actually finished reading the book. I don’t know if I can bring myself to... it’s just so bad!
