1. Ultimate showdown was fundamental to the building blocks of my life and I loved Neil's youtube channel growing up I watched every video on there but I never gave a shit about lemon demon even a little bit other than that

2. I heard a tally hall song for the first time last summer when I was doing those song rates and I hated it so much I made a point of insulting it and saying not to send me other shit like this will woods ass garbage which was probably a bit harsh but it worked

3. One of the most important bands int he world to me from 2014-2016 then the jennt death delay and their fake break up pissed me off so much I stopped liking them entirely and when they reunited I went to their show to have a bad time on purpose. They've started growing on me more again recently and I still listen to their music some times

4. He got some fun ass songs some of them mean something to me and I really really really like his root beer video that carved a hole in my mind and filled it with a perfect rendition of both voices in the video deep in my brain forever although I think I heard the dudes a really asshole irl

5. Never really given them a chance but I like Mike patron because he is weird and also a cities aviv song references them so that's fun

6. I have exclusively bad associations with this band and it has nothing to do with their music though I'm not huge on that either sorry

7. Fun guys I have a couple of their albums on vinyl at my parents house but I don't know them well

8. I don't care about Ongo bongo

Favorite Roleplay Memory

It's really difficult to narrow it down to just one memory, I've been RPing for so long. If I have to choose a single memory, it HAS to be running the Skull Brawl in the RPC back in the summer of 2017, when I still wrote Guzma. It was such a fun event. Even though I'm no longer in contact with any of the people who participated, having the chance to run a Pokémon Showdown tournament for the community was great. The server was very lively, the challengers were really talented, and everyone was piling in to spectate every single match. From a writer's standpoint, giving Guzma a chance to go "actually, y'know what, fuck you guys, I'll start my OWN battle ring with blackjack and hookers," was really entertaining. That was coming off of the heels of the Johto PWT that was done on Showdown earlier in 2017. He didn't make it far, but, he wound up having a 140+ round match with a Red roleplayer in the bracket, and that was INSANE.

Worst Roleplay Memory

The lore. . . . . . Oooooh the Rex lore lol. If I shared my ACTUAL worst roleplay memory with you guys, you would all be a lot more concerned than we need to be. So, instead, I will say this: be cautious of who you invite into your spaces. Connecting with people irl from the RPC is a lot of fun, and having them enter your other circles is great, WHEN it is healthy. Always use discretion when revealing personal information to someone you met on the internet. Practice safety. And be mindful of the personal details you share with others.

Practice 1_3.2 - Gathering Inspiration

Inspiration for this project was a strange one as I was generally chasing more of a feeling, rather than a visual idea. So a lot of my inspiration might not necessarily work visually.

User Interface was something I knew I had to dive into for this as it is something that is integral in immersing the player in this feeling. You'll be spending a lot of time in menus over the course of a summer so they should convey the feel of the game. When studying the things you will be interacting with the most are the contents of your bag and planner. So I wanted to integrate this into the game. You scroll through your planner for your quests, scribble on a map of the town for your objectives and leaf through the yearbook to keep up with the status and your knowledge of the individual students. A game that does this exceptionally well is 2021 Sports RPG Dodgeball Academia.

However I wanted to convey the tough-as-nails overly serious nature of macho delinquents and wanted to steer away from something quite so whimsical and charming, so I opted for a lot more scribbled notes and clutter. A generally more "punk" feel. Again there was a game that did something very similar incredibly well. The 2016 School RPG Persona 5.

The fidelity and sense of momentum this provides is staggering and a lot more work than I had time for. I also didn't want to just emulate other games wholesale.

Environments & Map

The school is on it's own island, connected to chains of smaller islands, not only would this break up the overworld of the game nicely but also allow us to thread a lot of visual variety and cultures onto the island. I wanted the game to have a feeling of universal nostalgia. Eastern, Western, Tropical, etc. A little of everything, creating this unique world that makes the game more unique and locations memorable. Rockstar's 2006 PS2 hit Bully/Canis Canem Edit has a similar map design (as well as an iconically whimsical soundtrack by Shawn Lee that screams childhood mischief).

It also features some iconic and memorable locations on each island that helps the player associate the islands with their locations, making navigation easier.

Another major inspiration for me was King of Fighters. I still remember playing it on a Neo Geo console at a family friend's house and fighting in this stage that featured this burning tree and being absolutely floored by the design of the hand drawn characters, the smoothness of the animation and the beauty of the environments. I wanted the locations on the island to all feel like unique and interesting places to fight so people can feel what I felt back then.

In SEGA's hit-series Yakuza you spend almost every game in the same location. Kamurocho, a small part of a much larger city. It's not a large open world, but it is full of life and packed with memorable locations. Over the course of the many games you see time pass, businesses open or close, things change. It makes the place feel real and living. Additionally River City Ransom - Rival Showdown also does a lot with a small map, that changes with it's day and night cycle. Both are iconic locations to me that squeeze a lot out of small locations. I endeavoured to use the school and surrounding islands as ever-changing and interactively dense hubs that support the nostalgic feel of the project.

Characters

I knew the cast had to be vibrant, unique, diverse and creative. It was tough to try to come up with so many characters, until I started to think of them less as individual characters and more in the context of their social groups. One of the main things that inspired me for the designs was the nostalgia for old Fighting Game casts. Particularly King of Fighters and Street Fighter had a big impact on me in childhood. Their personalities shining through in their visual design as well as their movesets. Also a big inspiration visually were Shonen Anime, in particular Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and the live-action film Crows Zero.

My opinion changes all the time, but at the moment it's "Bloody Mary" and "Boss Witch". I love the mystery in both of these maps.

"Dark Horse" from Just Dance 2015! Uuu, that's such a good map! I remember that me and my cousin had a problem with setting up the ps4 camera and we choose this one as a test, because "it looks easy!". Well at that time - it wasn't for us, lmao

'Roughly $2.4 billion in combined worldwide ticket sales? Universal critical acclaim? Twenty-one Oscar nominations between them? It might seem like everyone's a winner when it comes to lifting up Barbie and Oppenheimer as shining examples of Hollywood excellence, and yet the "Barbenheimer" narrative that swept the summer of 2023 continues as the high-profile blockbusters prepare to square off at the 96th Academy Awards.

So, will the 2024 Oscars ceremony finally put to rest the long-standing (and good-spirited) war between Greta Gerwig's tentpole and Christopher Nolan's historical epic? In one context, it should, as Oppenheimer — Nolan's three-hour drama about the titular father of the atomic bomb that ended World War II — is the clear-cut frontrunner to win Best Picture.

With 13 overall nominations (the most at a single ceremony since La La Land notched 14 nods in 2017), Oppenheimer has clear, cross-branch support from all sects of the movie industry — compared to Barbie's haul of eight total nods. While Barbie showed up in Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrera), and Best Adapted Screenplay, Gerwig was shockingly omitted from the Best Director lineup — a category Nolan was nominated in and is poised to win.

As Barbie suffers on that key front, its Oscars chances significantly dwindle...

Since Oppenheimer is generating heat for multiple victories in other key categories (Robert Downey Jr. is the likely Supporting Actor winner, while Cillian Murphy is still alive in the Best Actor race, though far from a sure thing), it probably will notch higher on the voters' preferential ballots across every branch of the Academy...

Some Oppenheimer skeptics might say that the film has, thus far, only won hardware from groups that don't share crossover membership with the Academy (Golden Globes, Critics Choice), and they'd be right — but the film is the most consistent presence on the awards trail so far, later dominating nominations announcements from the industry-inclusive SAG Awards, BAFTA Awards, Producers Guild of America Awards, and the Directors Guild of America Awards.

In the end, does it really matter who wins the Barbenheimer showdown of 2023? For studio prestige, both Universal and Warner Bros. have huge victories under their belts: In the age of the dying box office draw, Robbie flexed her might at ticket booths around the world, and Oppenheimer proved that a director's name can sell a project perhaps more than any actor working today. Shades of pink and black dividing the two will meld to gold at the Academy Awards on March 10, with both films winning by mere virtue of existing as pillars of success, side by side, just like those adorable Barbenheimer houses on the beach in Santa Monica.'

If you're interested in seeing Maria use the emotion extractor to full effect

I’ve opened the beam on the extractor and set it to full power. Maximum extraction. A sudden shock to the system should knock anyone within the beam out. Thankfully, they’ve helpfully lined up well within it. In seconds Tony and I are the only conscious people around. I even managed to knock out a couple of the cows, though I’m not 100% sure cows have emotions beyond ‘Moo’. Whatever. I do a quick check to make sure Joey is still breathing before getting Tony to help me drag him back to my car.

‘Tony, can you grab the car manual out of the glove box for me? I want to make sure Joey can’t get out if he wakes up while we’re driving.’

‘Sure thing.’ Tony seems more than happy to help. He’s holding up really well considering. So I do feel just the tiniest bit guilty when I blast him with the extractor when he’s not looking. He falls face first into the dashboard, but his make-up stays intact. Gotta hand it to the staff at Glam-a-Rama: they do good work.

‘Sorry Tony,’ I push him back into a sitting position and buckle his seat belt. ‘You seem like a nice guy, but I’ve got to keep my promise to your father and keep you out of this.’ An extraction at this level will helpfully wipe the last two hours from his memory, so as long as I get him back to the parking garage before he wakes up, I can pretend this whole thing never happened.

With my two boys safely tucked away, I do a quick check of the others. Vito and his pal are still out, but the hazmat suits are starting to stir. They were only just within range so I give each one another dose of the extractor before investigating the boxes.

Each box contains an emotion condenser unit ready to be hooked up to an extractor. The extractor will gradually extract emotion from a crowd, without all of the nasty side effects of my hand held unit. The condensers are empty, and the boxes are addressed to the Airport Ho-Jo’s my classmates and I are due to invade in a little over four hours. Since I know for a fact the supplies for tonight’s extraction have already been delivered, it looks like someone has decided to violate the yearly truce and break out on his own. At least, that’s what I tell Tony’s father when I call him from the car on the way back to the mall.

‘I’m sorry to tell you this, Sir. I know family betrayals are the worst kind. I disabled all of the surplus units. There’s no risk to the truce tonight.’

‘That’s…that’s very good Miss Esposito. I certainly wouldn’t want that.’

‘I was sure you didn’t.’ I was actually sure he was behind the whole thing. But I was equally sure he’d deny all knowledge if confronted with the evidence and use the perceived insult as an excuse to start openly feuding with my dad again. Better to blame Vito and let Tony’s dad save face. Give everyone a chance to back away gracefully. Like I said before: you have to know when to show some respect. I pulled the car back into the underground parking garage and found a spot as close to my original one as possible. Beside me, Tony started to mutter as he woke up.

‘Tony’s waking up now, Sir, I have to go.’

‘He’ll have no memory of today?’

‘Not of the last few hours anyway. I’m sorry I used the hand-held on him. It was the only thing I could think of.’ I didn’t want to tell him that Tony already knew pretty much everything and all I was erasing was some of the finer points. ‘He’s not stupid Mr de Luca. One day he’s going to figure it out.’

He sighs. ‘I know. But I want him to be happy and carefree as long as possible. You did well Maria. Consider the scales balanced.’

‘Good bye, Mr de Luca.’ Beside me, Tony stirred.

‘Were you just talking to my dad?’ he rubbed his eyes and let out a jaw cracking yawn.

‘Yeah. You conked out after the makeover. I didn’t want to wake you, but your phone was ringing so I picked up. He was just checking to see that we have everything we need for tonight. I told him we’re fine.’

‘Sorry I fell asleep.’ There was a thump from the trunk. ‘What’s that?’

‘Nothing. Let’s get out of here.’ I sped towards the exit, making sure to hit every speed bump along the way. Once I let my father know how easily Vito had taken Joey down, I wouldn’t have to worry about him harassing me anymore. I probably wouldn’t even see his precious perfect abs again, so I wanted him to have fond memories of our last day together. A concussion or ruptured spleen seem like good souvenirs.

‘Hey Maria, d’ya think you could slow down a little?’ Tony clung to the door handle as I launched us out of the garage onto the street. ‘I don’t wanna die before we get to prom.’

I eased back on the accelerator. ‘Sorry Tony. I guess I’m just excited about tonight.’

‘Me too,’ his smile faded. ‘Um…there’s a problem. A big one. I’m not sure how to tell you this. And you aren’t going to like it.’

‘Spit it out Tony.’ Did the extraction not work? Did he hear me talking to his father? Can he hear Joey swearing in the trunk? Any one of those things means I’m going to have to think of an excuse fast. Tony won’t be able to keep a secret and his father won’t be happy if he thinks I spilled family secrets.

‘I don’t actually know how to dance. Hey, why are you laughing? It’s not funny. I’m very vulnerable here. This is a real problem for me.’

‘I’m sorry Tony,’ I gasped, wiping a tear from my eye. ‘But after everything I’ve been through today, this is nothing. Let’s grab something to eat and I’ll show you some moves. Prom won’t know what hit it.’ We awkwardly high fived.

‘Prom, here we come.’

The Original Karens: From Emmett Till’s Accuser To The White Woman Who Sparked The Tulsa Massacre

In this current climate of protests and demands for justice, the entitled and indignant white women known as “Karens” appear to be falling apart.

From Amy Cooper, whose over dramatic 911 call on a birdwatching Black man blew up in her face, to Lisa Alexander, who was shocked to discover that no one needs her permission to write “Black Lives Matter” in chalk on their own property, Karens are in a rage. Not even a camera in their face will stop their toxic entitlement, which has led to a string of viral sensations.

When thinking of the country’s experiences with white supremacist violence, the discussions are typically centered around men. However, white women have historically been at the helm of this terror, using their tears and imaginary delicateness as ammunition for victim hood and ultimately destroying lives or at its worst, taking one.

Once upon a time, even the slightest hint that white womanhood may be in danger resulted in the lynching of Black children or a thriving town full of Black families being burned to the ground.

Here are some of the most horrific stories of Karens going wild before the term came into existence.

Sarah Page

There has been a lot of talk around Tulsa, Oklahoma due to this month's 99th anniversary of the tragic race massacre that took place there in 1921. Many people may not know the race massacre began with a 17-year-old named Sarah Page.

Page was an elevator operator in what was called the Drexel Building in downtown Tulsa. On May 30, 1921, reportedly, Dick Rowland, a 19-year-old Black shoe shiner, was getting on the elevator to use a segregated bathroom on a higher floor. He allegedly tripped when entering the elevator, accidentally grabbed Page's arm and she reacted by screaming. Rowland fled but the police were called. The next day, Rowland was arrested and word spread that a Black man assaulted a white woman.

According to the 2001 Tulsa Race Riot Commission Report via The Washington Post, Rowland was accused of assaulting Page “on a public elevator in broad daylight."

Within 18 hours, the Greenwood district of Tulsa, also known as Black Wall Street, was annihilated. In 1921, The New York Times described the massacre as “one of the most disastrous race wars ever visited upon an American city.”

No one knows what happened to Sarah Page or Dick Rowland after the massacre.

Fannie Taylor

On January 1, 1923, 22-year-old Fannie Taylor began screaming outside of her home. A neighbor rushed to the distressed white woman only to find her beaten and bruised, yelling for her baby. Miss Fannie claimed a Black man broke into her home and attacked her. The neighbor searched her house to find the baby safe and no signs of a break in.

Rumors quickly spread that Taylor was raped and robbed by a Black man. Taylor’s husband, James Taylor, gathered a group of men to find the imaginary criminal, even calling on the Klu Klux Klan for assistance.

A pack of 400 terrorists headed to the neighboring area, an affluent Black town in Rosewood, Florida, accusing any Black man they could of the crime. Fannie’s fraudulent tears was the excuse these envious hellions needed to purge out their rage.

Their first victim was Sam Carter, a local blacksmith, who was tortured and hung. They eventually began looking for a man named Jesse Hunter, who they claimed was an escaped convict.

The Black residents of Rosewood fought back but there were many casualties, including Sarah Carrier, a woman who did Fannie Taylor’s laundry. She was shot in the head, according to History.com. Her son Sylvester Carrier was also fatally shot.

The race massacre lasted for a week, burning Rosewood to the ground and killing countless Black people.

As for Fannie Taylor, she reportedly had an affair with a white man who beat her, which is why she had been found abused that night. She thought it was better to accuse a Black man of assault then to take accountability for her own actions.

The 1997 film Rosewood, directed by the late John Singleton, depicted the massacre.

Eleanor Strubing

In December of 1940, Eleanor Strubing, a wealthy white woman in Connecticut accused her 31-year-old Black chauffeur, Joseph Spell, of raping her four times and throwing her into a river. Spell was arrested within hours and immediately sent to jail to wait for trial.

The New York Times famously ran a story with the headline, "Mrs. J.K. Strubing Is Kidnapped And Hurled Off Bridge by Butler; WOMAN KIDNAPPED; HURLED OFF BRIDGE." The article claimed he “confessed after 16 hours" of questioning.

Spell was facing 30 years in prison.

Thankfully, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and its head lawyer, Thurgood Marshall, represented Spell. Marshall and his co-counsel proved evidence that Strubing lied. She, in fact, had consensual sex with Spell and jumped in the river because she was terrified that she might become pregnant from their affair. In her mind, the only option was to accuse Spell of rape in order to justify a possible pregnancy.

An all-white jury found Joseph Spell not guilty, which was shocking for the time. Nonetheless, if this accusation would have been made in the South, Joseph Spell certainly would have died by public lynching.

Wil Haygood, the author of Showdown: Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court Nomination That Changed America, wrote about the ruling, "It was a miracle. But Thurgood Marshall trafficked in miracles.”

Strubing, whose father was an investment banker and the former governor of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, suffered no punishment for lying under oath. Her husband, John K. Strubing, died in 1961 and she remarried to John W. Barclay. Stribing died at 92 years old in 2000.

Joseph Spell moved to East Orange, New Jersey after the trial. It’s not clear when he passed away.

Carolyn Bryant

In August of 1955, 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant accused 14-year-old Emmett Till of touching her and whistling at her in a store (he reportedly had a lisp and was unable to whistle.) Till, who was visiting from Chicago, was in Mississippi for the summer spending time with family. Within hours, he was kidnapped from his uncle’s home. The child was tortured, mutilated and thrown into the Tallahatchie River. His naked body was weighed down with a fan blade.

Carolyn’s husband, Roy Bryant and her brother-in-law J.W. Milam, the terrorists who lynched Till, were found not guilty by an all-white jury.

In the 2017 book The Blood of Emmett Till by Timothy Tyson, Carolyn Bryant admitted to lying and claimed that she actually didn’t remember what happened that day in the store.

She is still alive today, living in Mississippi at 86 years old. Emmett Till would have been 79 years old on July 25 if it wasn’t for Carolyn Bryant.

The 65th anniversary of his death is August 28.

Victoria Price and Ruby Bates

Before The Central Park Five in 1989, which would become the Exonerated Five in 2002, there was the Scottsboro Boys in 1932.

On Mach 25, 1931, a group of Black and white teenagers were riding freight trains looking for work, which was common during the Great Depression. The white teens wanted the Black teens off the train and a fight broke out. The white teens attempted to forcibly throw the Black teens from the train. In defending themselves, the Black teenagers instead kicked the white teens off the locomotive.

The angry white teens went to a local sheriff who demanded the train be stopped.

Nine Black teens were removed, ages 13 to 19. However, two white women, Victoria Price and Ruby Bates, were also on the train and spent their time wrongfully accusing several of the Black boys of rape.

Similar to the Exonerated Five, that one accusation stole the innocence of nine Black children.

The teens were jailed in Scottsboro, Alabama: Haywood Patterson, 18; Clarence Norris, 19: Charlie Weems, 19; brothers Andy Wright, 19 and Leroy Wright, 13; Olin Montgomery, who was nearly blind, 17; Ozie Powell, 16; Eugene Williams, 13, and Willie Roberson, 16, who could barely walk due to severe syphilis.

The all-white and all-male jury trial was over in a matter of days and all of them — except 13-year-old Leroy Wright — were found guilty of rape and given the death penalty. There was no evidence of course since Bates couldn’t identify the men she claimed raped her.

The NAACP and the International Labor Defense (ILD), the legal wing of the American Communist Party, joined the case. By November 1932, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Scottsboro defendants had been denied the right to counsel. Shortly after, Ruby Bates admitted she lied.

Nonetheless, the back and forth with the courts continued for years.

By 1936, Haywood Patterson was convicted of rape and sentenced to 75 years. In 1948, he escaped from prison and made it to Michigan. The governor refused to extradite him to Alabama. By 1951, Patterson was convicted of manslaughter after a barroom brawl. In 1952, he died of cancer. He was 39 years old.

In July of 1937, Clarence Norris was eventually convicted of rape and sentenced to life in prison. He was paroled in 1946 and moved north, where he married and had children. His autobiography, The Last of the Scottsboro Boys was released in 1979. He passed away in 1989 at 76 years old.

In July of 1937, Andrew Wright was convicted of rape and sentenced to 99 years. He was released in 1950 at 38 years old. Charlie Weems was also convicted of rape and paroled in 1943. He spent the rest of his life in Atlanta. It’s not clear when or if Wright and Weems have passed away.

Ozie Powell’s rape charges were dropped but he pled guilty to assaulting a deputy, which happened while in custody. He was released from prison in 1946. After spending four years on death row as adults, all charges against Willie Roberson, Olen Montgomery, Eugene Williams, and Leroy Wright were dropped.

It is not known how or when Willie Roberson, Olen Montgomery, Eugene Williams, or Ozie Powell died.

After being released, Leroy Wright, the youngest, went on a national lecture tour and then joined the Army. In 1959, according to PBS, Wright accused his wife of having an affair, fatally shot her and then committed suicide. He was 41 years old.

As for Victoria Price and Ruby Bates, Price never recanted her testimony and died in 1982 at 77 years old. Bates had the privilege of going on a speaking tour, bizarrely, for the International Labor Defense (ILD), which defended the Scottboro Boys. She claimed to have lied because she was "excited and frightened by the ruling class of Scottsboro." Bates died in 1976.
