Valor Unbound: The Legacy of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment

Happy Black History Month!

This week, we are highlighting the honor and bravery of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first African American units in the Civil War. Established in 1863, following the Emancipation Proclamation, the formation of the regiment marked a pivotal moment in military history, challenging racial barriers and setting a precedent for the inclusion of African Americans in the United States military.

Under the leadership of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the 54th Massachusetts consisted of free African American men and escaped slaves eager to fight for the Union and the freedom of their fellow Americans. Their most notable engagement, at Fort Wagner, South Carolina, showcased their courage and determination. Though the battle was fierce and the regiment suffered heavy casualties, their sacrifice significantly bolstered the Union’s morale and support for African American soldiers.

The legacy of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment extends beyond their military achievements. By demonstrating the valor and capability of African American soldiers, they helped change public opinion and policies, leading to the enlistment of nearly 200,000 African American men in the Union forces by the war’s end.

The long bezzle

When it comes to the modern world of enshittified, terrible businesses, no addition to your vocabulary is more essential than "bezzle," JK Galbraith's term for "the magic interval when a confidence trickster knows he has the money he has appropriated but the victim does not yet understand that he has lost it"

The bezzle is contained by two forces.

First, Stein's Law: "Anything that can't go on forever will eventually stop."

Second, Keynes's: "Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent."

On the one hand, extremely badly run businesses that strip all the value out of the firm, making things progressively worse for its suppliers, workers and customers will eventually fail (Stein's Law).

On the other hand, as the private equity sector has repeatedly demonstrated, there are all kinds of accounting tricks, subsidies and frauds that can animate a decaying, zombie firm long after its best-before date (Keynes's irrational markets):

One company that has done an admirable job of balancing on a knife edge between Stein and Keynes is Verizon, a monopoly telecoms firm that has proven that a business can remain large, its products relied upon by millions, its stock actively traded and its market cap buoyant, despite manifest, repeated incompetence and waste on an unimaginable scale.

This week, Verizon shut down Bluejeans, an also-ran videoconferencing service the company bought for $400 million in 2020 as a panic-buy to keep up with Zoom. As they lit that $400 mil on fire, Verizon praised its own vision, calling Bluejeans "an award-winning product that connects our customers around the world, but we have made this decision due to the changing market landscape":

Writing for Techdirt, Karl Bode runs down a partial list of all the unbelievably terrible business decisions Verizon has made without losing investor confidence or going under, in a kind of tribute to Keynes's maxim:

Verizon isn't just bad at being a phone company that does non-phone-company things – it's incredibly bad at being a phone company, too. As Bode points out, Verizon's only real competency is in capturing its regulators at the FCC:

Short-sellers – who bet against companies and get paid when their stock prices go down – get a bad rap: billionaire shorts were the villains of the Gamestop squeeze, accused of running negative PR campaigns against beloved businesses to drive them under and pay their bets off:

But shorts can do the lord's work. Writing for Bloomberg, Kathy Burton tells the story of Nate Anderson, whose Hindenburg Research has cost some of the world's wealthiest people over $99 billion by publishing investigative reports on their balance-sheet shell-games just this year:

Anderson started off trying to earn a living as a SEC whistleblower, identifying financial shenanigans and collecting the bounties on offer, but that didn't pan out. So he turned his forensic research skills to preparing mediagenic, viral reports on the scams underpinning the financial boasts of giant companies…after taking a short position in them.

This year, Anderson's targets have included Carl Icahn, whose company lost $17b in market cap after Anderson accused it of overvaluing its assets. He went after the world's fourth-richest man, Gautam Adani, accusing him of "accounting fraud and stock manipulation," wiping out 34% of his net worth. He took on Jack Dorsey, whose payment processor Square renamed itself Block and went all in on the cryptocurrency bezzle, lopping 16% off its share price.

Burton points out that Anderson's upside for these massive bloodletting was comparatively modest. A perfectly timed exit from the $17b Icahn report would have netted $56m. What's more, Anderson faces legal threats and worse – one short seller was attacked by a man wearing brass-knuckles, an attack attributed to her short activism.

Shorts are lauded as one of capitalism's self-correcting mechanisms, and Hindenberg certainly has taken some big, successful swings at some of the great bezzles of our time. But as Verizon shows, shorts alone can't discipline a market where profits and investor confidence are totally decoupled from competence or providing a decent product or service.

April May and June Duck as teenagers - Quack Pack AU and Quack Pack Reboot - Quack Pack Week - Duckverse and Ducktales 2017

I should have done this a long time ago, but here I am regarding one of my favorite characters in the Duckverse and the characters I'm sure should be in the Quack Pack (either as a sequel or a reboot) are definitely Daisy's nieces, April , May and June Duck. They might look like the Chipettes from Alvin and the Chipmunks, but to be honest Daisy's nieces came before the Chipettes so Daisy's nieces have the upper hand. Anyway, I did two versions, one related to the Quack Pack AU and the other to the Quack Pack reboot (if it was a sequel to Ducktales 2017).

I know that in the Ducktales 2017 finale April, May and June are clones and that Webby is April, but since I don't like them being really Daisy's nieces, I added my own way of how they would look, especially in the Quack Pack reboot (see second drawing) and I got my inspiration from here: https://ducktalks.com/2018/07/04/april-may-and-june-duck/

And took inspiration from fanart by @avespecora.

April, May and June would really be Daisy's nieces and act like Donald's nephews. April would be like Huey, May would be like Dewey, and June would be part Louie. Plus I added their clothes so they don't look the same, and drew them in my own way. And let's face it, I have nothing against Webby, May and June, I just wish they hadn't collapsed the duck family tree like that, and both DT17 May and June were really good characters in the end. It would be interesting to see people with the same names get to know each other. For the second drawing (more precisely the first) is my redraw of April, May and June as teenagers in the Quack Pack pose as well as Donald's nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck, with the fact that I think that pose would suit Daisy's nieces more than Donald's nephews. That version would be in my Quack Pack AU or the Quack Pack reboot if it was based on the Donald Duck comics. April, May and June would be like Donald's nephews, in terms of personalities, but they would definitely be ordinary girls, but not too "cool" or too feminine. And I drew in my own way, combining from the Dutch comics as well as from the series The Legend of The Three Caballeros, so here you can see the combined colors of the clothes as well as the hair they wear. May would be like Huey, June would be like Dewey, and April would be like Louie. And yes, they would cause a lot of trouble for their Aunt Daisy.

I hope you like these drawings and these ideas as well as these versions that I drew in my own style. Also this is my present for my friend, @nuvemzinhacorderosa, who loves Daisy's nieces very much. And this is also dedicated to @quackpackweek, even if I'm late. Sorry!

Rooftop Bop

Season 4 Episode 1 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips: Volume AI

Man, Scatman John...what an interesting relation he has to the internet, huh? For whatever reason back in the early days of YouTube, his titular hit song Scatman became really prevalent to use in amateur comedy videos, most notably with the "Super Mario 64 Bloopers!"-genre of video. These are actually videos that I have memory of watching - people just playing around in their childhood 3D game and making up their own little stories and sketches to the tune of silly music. But Scatman, and its less-viral sibling Scatman's World, are more than just nonsense, there's an emotion to John's two legendary songs, a distillation of raw nostalgia - one that the internet suddenly rediscovered back in 2019, and one that SiIvaGunner itself celebrated in bursts throughout the whole year, with Rooftop Bop being an absolute standout example.

Like with most memes, its hard to really trace down a logistical reason for their upbringing - check any KnowYourMeme page, and its bound to just say something along the lines of "on this date, this video/image was posted, and gained tons of attention". The Scatman-posting of 2019 was a pretty interesting case on top of that - the "AWESOME - HE FINALLY" memes that initiated it all were like a big mishmash of memes old and new. Part of the joke was in using nostalgic pieces from the old internet, the music and the "black border" template, over clips from Vine or elsewhere edited to have a positive, borderline innocent outcome, as if to intentionally turn the "Loud equals funny" format that so much of Vine fell under on its head. It's like three layers deep into irony, to where it loops around into finding sincere happiness funny - but it is genuinely still just a really good bit, the perfect kind of stupid comedy that's at once unexpected yet also brings its audience together over the nostalgia it evokes - nostalgia for two different eras of the internet, even! Despite being so core to the old internet days, Scatman wasn't very prominent on the Unregistered Hypercam 2 takeover of 2018, taking a backseat to other internet anthems like Never Gonna Give You Up in Never Gonna Give Up Mahjong and Dreamscape in How 2 Do Anything. But, as if it was fated to be, just a few months later in 2019 Scatman John would once again be made relevant - and the SiIva team was right on top of things.

A lot of Scatman John's prominence on SiIva in 2019 was, of course, on the legendary Not Funny Didn't Laugh day - on the 10th of September (whats 9 plus 10?), a series of shitposts intentionally drenched in as much irony as possible were featured on the channel, the depths of which I explored back in Sex - Steve Harvey. But beyond giving us all brain damage, the event was like a huge shot in the arm for Scatman Stocks - and just two weeks later, we would receive perhaps the best Scatman rip yet. The guy had been lurking as a meme on SiIva before, notably being in some Season 1 rips here and there - and so his return on Not Funny Didn't Laugh day felt like just one more piece of internet history to be nostalgic for. Early YouTube, Vine, and the very first months of SiIvaGunner - all rolled into two songs filled with such whimsy, yet also filled with pure emotion. Now: Does that ring a bell to anyone else?

I feel like Rooftop Bop is the definition of a "more than the sum of its parts" rip, if that makes any sense. It's an excellent melody swap/mashup no doubt, the kind that almost makes you wonder how it was even done with how authentic the violin's lead melody sounds, and the chorus returning to the original Rooftop Run: Act 1 theme with Scatman John's vocals hits oh-so-hard - its an amazingly paced out rip throughout, ping-ponging between melody swap, mashup and both at once throughout - but like I said, the rip is so much more than all of that. It feels almost like a universal experience (at least, for my generation) to have an attachment to Scatman John - but more than that, we all have an attachment to the very thing his two hits represented. Because his balance of silliness and genuine heartfelt emotion is the exact thing that made SiIvaGunner so special all the way back in Season 1, the kind of balance that has made us all smile, laugh, empathize and outright cry, althewhile never losing its core of pure whimsy. Be it The Paragoomba and the Wiggler, Aphex, Planet Wisp Mashup Medley, Turnabout Fishters, or indeed Rooftop Bop - SiIvaGunner, very much like Scatman John, has gotten so many emotions out of us, and made us all too attached to an entity others may consider naught but a silly gimmick.

It's a fantastic listen - but more than that, it's an incredible experience. The latter half of Season 4 Episode 1 of SiIvaGunner was perhaps the most exciting period to ever follow the channel during, and Rooftop Bop's unprecedented ability to unite us all through a raw dosage of nostalgic memories couldn't have come at a better time.

Only 2 short shippy prompts all month! All 4 modern girls got a couple spotlights, various family cameos and backstories, a future prompt as is tradition, Zaine had a few posts, a few NPC-only scenes, a LOT of Endwalker, and even Ancient Icarus got a story, tying into 2021's "Destruct" prompt and how/why the siblings' souls have been connected through time and reincarnations.

A few of these are alternate takes on scenes I've touched on before, but it's interesting what a new prompt at a different time can get one to say, how we change as writers in what we focus on and how we say it.

This comes in roughly 300 words shorter than last year, at 18,493. The week of the 18-22 I had off work for my birthday, and that had the most 1k+ prompts, with a word count nearly double the other 3 full weeks. While the longer prompts are good, I'm really happy with how so many of the short ones turned out!

I was again trying to be realistic about my time, energy, not pushing free write days...and also working on an original writing project on the side, so I actually did do more writing over the month, just not FFXIV related!

(Also why some of my responses were in just under the wire...)

But this was a good break and exercise from that other writing, and let me try a few new things.

And comparing to earlier years--especially 2017 and 2018 when I was getting back onto the writing horse and feeling out my OCs--I feel like my growth as a writer, especially to be more succinct yet still evocative when needed, is evident. I've gotten a lot of practice in over time, and this challenge is one of the things that helped me get to where I can write an original story on top of my fanfic!

I didn't look at the totals until the end; I only checked some of the shorter ones during the challenge to see if they hit my personal "500+ words" cut off for adding a Read More to the posts.

"Grave" honestly could have been a lot shorter; I started the plot too early, and much as I like Zaine making one last visit to his childhood Nana, for the purposes of the challenge, I could have just focused on going to the lichyard to save myself time and energy, and wrote about the visit on my own another time. On the other hand, it's done now!

Not sure which is a favorite; there's a lot I like.

I like a lot of things,but mostly whimsical, folksy aesthetics,forests and plants, and glowy flowers and things like wisp motifs (there's no limit actually).My favourite colours are,as you might have guessed, the multitude of shades of red, deep maroons and browns. I love fantasy,and folk tales and Celtic things in general have been my passion for a long,long time ,though I also love things inspired by Alice in Wonderland .

As far as music goes...I sang soprano at a choir for a larger part of my teenage,and choral music is very close to my heart. My favourite genres of music are Celtic, especially Irish traditional, new age, classical/neo classical, sea shanties,and whatever Yuki Kajiura and Mili have going on.

Now...art! When not doing fanart,I like drawing fantasy illustrations, and one day I'd like to illustrate books but that's a pipe dream. I'm self taught,and use mostly watercolour and ink. I also love sculpting. It started with trying to sculpt figures and while that's still what I do most,I sculpt other things too,and in general it has to be the favourite of my scores of hobbies . I also do bookbinding...and music box strips ...and doll customs...yeah there's no rhyme or reason to what I do and don't actually.

LET'S TALK ABOUT WHY LEO DIDN'T RECOGNIZE THE NIGHTWATCHER.

everyone- EVERYONE for years has been calling it "dumb" that in tmnt 2007, casey recognized raph as the nightwatcher, but his own brother didn't. and maybe it was something the writers overlooked or forgot to write out, i don't know, but this is MY hyperfixation and I get to choose the english teacher overanalysis.

let's put this into perspective: leo has been in south america for well over a year. not only did he choose to extend that period, he stopped writing to his family. there's been a lack of communication for months so he has no idea what's been happening. if april didn't find him, he probably would have stayed even longer.

something i noticed is that when leo goes home, he acts like none of his brothers changed or grew the whole time he was gone. it's just "oh, i'm home! back to normal! i'm bro-mom again" and raph is the only one who's actively reminding him that things ARE different, he can't just act like they aren't. but leo doesn't see that, he treats it like "oh the typical Raph Antagonism that's just how he is."

i'm not saying 07!leo's dismissive or sanctimonious, (which lbr he is but that's irrelevant rn) it's more like. when you've been away for college or on a long trip or something, there's that awkwardness of the home you remember vs the home you just came back to. furniture has rearranged, there's new dishes in the cabinets, there's a weird shift in the atmosphere, ygm? maybe you're gonna act like nothing is different, but it totally is and it bugs you for a good while before you can mentally settle back in. (i was away from home for half of 2018 so i can confirm IT WAS WEIRD)

the reason leo doesn't figure out raph is the nightwatcher is because he doesn't recognize that change in him. he sees the same raph he left over a year ago who didn't sneak out and go full red hood, he assumes he just slept all day and did nothing because that's what april told him. that's what everyone believed he was doing. ngl i could speculate that leo was against the nightwatcher because he felt guilty for leaving and someone else had to pick up the slack but that has nothing to do w this.

that's also why casey DID recognize him. he saw how raph changed overtime. raph is the turtle he's closest to and considering his backstory, he would ABSOLUTELY be the first to put two and two together. casey is literally the ONLY CHARACTER raph opens up to right before leo comes back. it's likely casey has been the only one he's actively talked to the whole time and that's also why he realized raph was the nightwatcher. my friend's upset that he and his brothers aren't a team or allowed to fight anymore, then a few weeks later some new mysterious hero appears? gee, that SURE IS A COINCIDENCE.

G-Dragon from Big Bang launched his fashion brand Peaceminusone in 2016. His association with Nike began in 2019 and this year he is collaborating on the half sneaker - half shoe Nike Kwondo 1.

Peasceminusone has collaborated on a number of campaigns with Yoon Ahn's brand Ambush. She was appointed Director of Jewellery Creation for Dior Homme in 2018 and has worked closely with Kim Jones, remember him?

Also present KB Lee from the Emotionally Unavailable brand who has been working with Nike since 2019 and is another long time G-Dragon collaborator. Also Code Kunst music composer and producer known for his R&B and hip hop music.

It's very well written, the characterization is spot on and the 'what if they met just before the ZA broke' is an 'what if' we carylers love to explore.
