#Subaru jdm series#
Torque steer is also reduced with this type of powertrain layout since the front drive shafts are of equal length and weight.Īt the time of introduction, the Japanese and European market naturally aspirated models (1.6 and 1.8) received an unusual grille with a small central opening. The boxer design provides good vibration mitigation due to the principles of a balanced engine because the movement of each piston is largely countered by a piston in the opposing cylinder bank, eliminating the need for a counter-weighted rotating crankshaft ( harmonic balancer), but with some vibration from offsets. According to Subaru, their configuration of the engine inline with the transmission minimizes body roll due to the lower center of gravity compared with offset engines in most other vehicles. Subaru chose to continue their longstanding use of the boxer engine in the Impreza. Initial engine choices included 1.5, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engines. In late 1995, a two-door coupe was introduced. According to a Motor Trend article written March 1992 on page 26, the name of Subaru's new compact was, initially, to be called the Loyale, displaying an official photograph of the four-door sedan. The car used a shortened version of the Legacy's floor pan. Īnnounced on 22 October 1992, the Impreza was released in Japan in November and offered in either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) versions and as a four-door sedan or five-door wagon (Touring). Japanese models remain available in both configurations.Ī 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was renamed the XV ( Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction - this was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation. Subaru has offered 4-door sedan and 5-door body variants since 1992.

It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. Purchasing a vehicle and modifying it is sometimes the first thing in people’s thoughts. Typically the first modification is wheels and tires. In other cases, owners like to upgrade the aesthetics of the car as well.
This can easily be done with the addition of splitters to the front bumper, side skirts, and rear bumper. Rally Innovations has released a line of clean and stylish aero splitters for Ford’s performance line of vehicles, as well as the Fusion. The 0.125″ thick aluminum construction makes installation simple while offering a sleek and simple look.
For those that actually off-road their Subaru, it is a common issue to not have enough lighting after nightfall. The factory lights suffice for on-road use but do not offer near enough coverage to illuminate your surroundings or what’s far ahead. Rally Innovations released a line of light mounts covering many popular Subaru vehicles.
With a 1.50″ x 0.06″ mild steel construction, each light bar bolts directly to the vehicle complimenting the factory contour. This rally-inspired design gives the ability to mount up to four lights for ultimate visibility. As a result of the simple yet functional design, it prevents the need to modify the grille or factory bumper.
Blowing dirt or dust can be a major issue when following someone in the desert. Being that the light bar is mounted low, it offers an extra advantage when off-roading. Lower mounted lights are able to illuminate the scenery without sacrificing the ability to see what’s directly ahead.
Increase the overall look and utility of your vehicle with the quality materials that offer a black powder coat finish. Giving the vehicle a sleek look while maintaining a durable coating. Whether its rally-inspired light mounting bars or simple and stylish aero splitters, Rally Innovations have you covered!

2019’s Top Rides: Part 3/Buick Regal GS, Subaru Ascent and Golf R
By Michael Hozjan
Buick Regal GS AWD: Buick gets it right
Tumblr media
At 12, I wanted to be a car designer. Fate however had different plans for me. With an eye for automotive design, I grew up loving Buicks; from the ’57 Special to the ’59 Invicta, with the ’64 Wildcat stealing my heart time and again. Cadillacs took a close second, Fords were ok but I found Chevs too feminine. Buicks, were masculine with broad shouldered front fenders and creased lines, personifying the designing cues of GM greats, Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell.
Then came the Riviera. One snowy December afternoon as I headed to my post office, there on St. Lawrence Boulevard, with six inches of snow on the ground sat a ’65 Riviera. My heart skipped several beats and I must have studied its lines for what seemed like an eternity.
Well into the ‘70s there were some noteworthy designs that came out of Buick’s design studios however, the last four decades have been anything but exciting. That has all changed with the launch of the Regal GS – the sexiest Buick to come out of Detroit in, well the last four decades.
The Grand Sport designation is nothing new to the Buick line up, having been associated with ‘70s era muscle cars but this is the first time that it has been used in a European sports sedan context. The stylish GS goes up against some well established rivals like the Acura TLX, Lexus ES, BMW 3 series and the like, a tough field to say the least. The Regal GS is more than just good looks, it’s a bona fide sports sedan. In fact a rebadged, German built, Opel Insignia, so the GS starts with the right genes. European engineered handling makes it the best tarmac gripping Buick ever.
Tumblr media
Red Brembo brake calipers immediately tell everyone that this is not your typical Buick.
While different drive options/trim levels are available elsewhere around the globe, we Canucks get only one trim/drive option- also the most desirable one - the all-wheel-drive version motivated by the 310 horsepower DOHC, 3.6L V6 with variable valve timing punching out 282 lb-ft of torque through a 9-speed automatic.
Tumblr media
Entry price is $44,045, my tester came with the Buick Experience Package ($3,495) that included the moonroof, a Bose premium 8-speaker sound system, wireless charging, an 8” touch screen, HD radio, LED leveling headlights, The Driver Confidence Package (yes you read that right) at $1,995 includes adaptive cruise, forward collision alert with automatic braking, lane keep assist, front pedestrian braking and heads up display. The Ebony Twilight Metallic paint was a premium option at $495.
Tumblr media
The all-wheel-drive gets a torque vectoring rear axle, which only improves traction in slippery conditions and makes the Buick eat up the corners. Buick has also given us three driving modes to choose from, Touring, Sport and GS
Inside you’ve got one color choice, black. The supportive Recaros have a massage feature as well as being heated/cooled. Both driver’s and passenger seats have 14 adjustments to suit your body, including adjustable bolsters. Following with the German sport sedan traits, it includes a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
Tumblr media
Rear seat passengers get ample legroom, but headroom is tight for taller occupants. With 30.cu.ft of space under the hatch with the rear seats up, with over 60 cu.ft with the rear seats folded, it betters many compact crossovers!
Is it perfect?
Non-functional air intakes in the front valance are mickey-mouse and a step backwards. Why not leave them open and help cool the brakes? No spare tire but a useless tire fix kit –that’ll help when you have a blow out or bend a wheel on Quebec’s pot holes. On the comical side, the audio system had mixed up the Cirius station numbers it’s 60s on 6 and not 660s on six….and the same could be said for 50s on 5 not 550s on 5, as well as 70s, 80s and 90s.
You can go through the gears manually with the console mounted shifter but paddle shifters would have been a nice touch to compliment the smooth 9-speed automatic.
Tumblr media
Will the GS steal buyers away from BMW? I hardly doubt it but it does give of us a formidable option to keep our performance dollars with domestic manufacturers, and the GS buyer has nothing to be apologetic for.

Subaru Ascent: If at first you don’t succeed…
Tumblr media
If you thought that Subaru already had a large SUV you’re right. The magic word here being had. The B9 Tribeca, later shortened to just Tribeca debuted in 2005 to, lets just say a less than stellar sales, and by 2014 had moved into the automotive history books of what once was.
It takes guts to admit that you were wrong, and it takes even big cojones to come back with a similar sized vehicle. Truth be told the SUV market has also changed over the last decade with SUVs growing increasingly larger, just like the population. Subaru appears to have been ahead of its time back in 2005 when 3-row SUV’s didn’t proliferate our roads, and minivans still reigned supreme for getting the platoon to school. But times have changed and so the new Ascent is the company’s answer to the latest trend.
Tumblr media
The Ascent is also Subaru’s largest vehicle to date, with 142 mm longer wheelbase and 134 mm longer in length than the Tribeca, so yes passenger comfort has been greatly increased. The midsize SUV is built on the company’s Global Platform, a chassis that is easily adaptable; serving as the basis for everything from their Impreza and Crosstrek to the Ascent.
Tumblr media
Available in four trim levels – Convenience, Touring, Limited and Premier - with the entry level 8-passenger Convenience starting at a meager $36,695. Regardless of trim, there’s a new 2.4L direct-injected, turbocharged boxer four cylinder dolling out 260 horses and 277 lb-ft of torque through the High-torque Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission).
Tumblr media
Talk to anyone who’s ever driven a Subie in less than ideal conditions and they’ll swear by the symmetrical full-time all-wheel-drive system. A new feature, X-Mode, pushes the traction envelope even further; at the push of a button, it monitors and controls four different vehicle dynamics, including engine, transmission, torque splitting and braking.
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of standard driver-assistance technology in each Ascent without having to step up to trim levels, Items like automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist through the company’s EyeSight system. The base model gets a 6.5 inch infotainment screen while upper trim buyers will see an 8 inch screen. GPS however is only available in the two higher end trims (Limited and Premier). Both Touring and Limited are available in either seven or eight passenger configurations with captain’s chairs taking up the second row. My tester, the Premier trim comes only with the second row captains chairs. While all trims get heated front buckets it’s only the two higher trims that pamper their second row passengers with heated outboard seats. The third row looks a lot more inviting than some of it’s competitors but it’s still on the tight side with limited leg room. Still bear in mind this is a mid-size seven passenger and the seats are padded and comfortable to keep the small fry happy for longer drives. Oh and a pair of third-row USB charging ports become available in the Limited trim and are in addition to the standard two you’ll find in the front and second rows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rear cover blind and tow loop are stowed neatly under the cargo bay’s floor, the latter an option on some pricier suvs
.
Whether you’re out in the boonies or negotiating city streets, the Ascent doesn’t feel like a large bulky SUV. With above average handling and a minimum of body roll for a three-row SUV, Subaru’s use of the boxer engine and its advantageous low center of gravity immediately become apparent. It’s stable, with a soft luxurious ride and is generally quiet during normal highway cruising. But it does get loud when pushed hard.
Tumblr media
Is it perfect?
The drone of the CVT does get annoying but once you get passed that, the Ascent is typically Subaru; it does everything what it’s supposed to and does it well. I averaged 9.8L/100 km which is unprecedented in a 7-passenger sport ute. It may not be overly luxurious but you get what you pay for. I know my Subaru driving friends will all be looking at the Ascent when the time comes to turn in their current drives, and that alone will keep this big Subaru around for a long time to come.

Volkswagen Golf R: You’ll want one
If you’ve missed my installment of the Rabbit GTI, I urge you to scroll down the page and have a read.
Tumblr media
Now take the GTI and turn it up a notch, or three. The formula for the Golf R is very simple; take one German built spacious hatchback that already has solid, tight handling, and add gobbs of turbocharged horses to a 2.0L inline four cylinder. How many ponies? Two eighty-eight to be exact – enough to propel you well past the posted speed limit in less time than it takes you to say posted speed limit. Now stir in all-wheel drive to put all that power to the ground. Slam it to the ground for added handling. Dress it up with killer 19” wheels.
Tumblr media
Choose between the 6-speed manual available for $42,495 or the 7-speed dual clutch automatic with Tiptronic for $43,895. Now go have the most fun you can with your clothes on.
Tumblr media
Doesn’t look like it but there’s nearly 300 horses in there
Tumblr media
Quad exhaust tips tell you this is no ordinary Golf
The Golf R is everything you want in a performance sedan and then some. It makes no sense in a country with posted speed limits, but then neither do Porches, Ferraris and the like.

2020 Subaru Legacy Tech Dive: EyeSight, DriverFocus, Starlink Shine
Subaru Legacy Touring XT 2020 (April)
The 2020 Subaru Legacy is a near-perfect car if you’re looking for solid transportation and extensive safety technology across all trim lines. Every Legacy has all-wheel-drive, and enough driver-assist technology to be virtually self-driving on highways while protecting pedestrians in town (called Subaru EyeSight), track and alert inattentive drivers (DriverFocus), and call for help in an accident (Subaru Starlink).
The new, 2020 seventh-generation Legacy also has front cupholders deep enough to not spill a 32-ounce Big Gulp, were the car capable of a 4-second 0-60 run (it’s more like 7 to 9 seconds, depending on the engine). The engine’s “boxer” technology, similar to what Porsche uses, lowers the car’s center of gravity. The front and back rows are spacious and the trunk is enormous. Highway mileage is in the upper thirties.
So what’s not to like? Not much. This Subie won’t move the excitement needle quite like Mazda or Honda does among midsize sedans. It’s not as dazzling as the 2020 Hyundai Sonata. There’s less ground clearance than the similar Subaru Outback crossover. The new infotainment system and navigation had a few quirks, the kind a firmware upgrade typically cures, and stop-start twisted the steering wheel and my thumb a couple of times (more below).
The Nappa leather cockpit of the 2020 Subaru legacy.
The Car for Inattentive Drivers?
You say you’re a good driver; I say I’m a good driver. Yet surveys find the majority of Americans self-describe themselves as above-average drivers, which is statistically impossible. And yet, we also know people close to us whose driving skills or cognition worry us: teenagers and others in their first few years of driving, aging parents, a spouse or partner who’s had a couple of fender-benders that were the fault of “the other guy,” and people who text or create on-the-fly playlists even when they know it’s unsafe.
Subaru is a leader among automakers in making virtually all its safety technology standard across every one of the six trim lines, or model variants, of this new 2020 car. Buy any Legacy Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, or Touring XT and you get:
A dual front-facing camera system, Subaru EyeSight, to keep you in your driving lane, warn of / brake for possible forward collisions, detect and brake for pedestrians at speeds up to 20 mph.
Full-range adaptive cruise control as part of EyeSight.
An active driving assistance system that controls speed and lane centering, pacing any car in front of you, also part of EyeSight.
LED low and high-beam headlamps with automatic high-beam control.
All-wheel-drive for extra grip in snow or rain, or on gravel roads.
Any Legacy other than the base model has safety telematics (called Subaru Starlink) standard. Blind-spot warning is available, optional on two trim lines and standard on three; it also includes rear cross-traffic alert and automatic braking while backing up. An excellent eye-tracking driver distraction system, DriverFocus, is standard on the top two trim lines and optional on a third.
One feature not offered is a surround-view camera array that primarily improves tight-spaces parking, but it also protects you (if you watch the screen) from running into kids’ tricycles or kids on tricycles. Rear auto-braking provides that protection.
With the 260-hp turbo engine (top two trim lines only), you’ll hit 60 in 6-7 seconds. Add 2 seconds for the 182 hp engine on other Legacies.
Legacy on the Road: Mostly Smooth Sailing
I drove the top-of-the-line 2020 Subaru Legacy Touring XT, about $37,000 including shipping, with warm brown Nappa leather, moonroof, an 11-inch portrait-orientation center stack LCD, vented front seats, heated fronts and rears, onboard navigation, and immense amounts of back-seat legroom and trunk room.
Subaru lie-flat boxer engine: two cylinders go left, two cylinders go right.
With the new, 2.4-liter turbo engine of 260 hp and continuously variable transmission on the Limited and Touring XTs, it was quick, hitting 60 mph in 6-7 seconds. Highway miles went by quickly. Under foot-down acceleration, there wasn’t much noise from the CVT transmission; some testers have noted it on the non-turbo Legacy that has to be pushed harder to get up to highway speeds.
Most four-cylinder-engine cars have an inline design. Most Subarus including the Legacy have horizontally opposed, flat or boxer engines. They are effectively V engines where the angle is 180 degrees, not the 60 or 90 degrees of V6 or V8 engines. The engine is more compact, has less inherent vibration, gives the car a lower center of gravity, and allows for a lower hood and better driver sightlines. Against that, the engine requires two cylinder heads. Porsche also uses flat-six engines in the 911, Cayman, Spyder, and Boxster. The term boxer alludes not to the small crate it fits in, but rather the in-out motion of the two adjacent pistons that looks like a boxer’s fists.
Where most automakers use a combination of radar and a camera for driver assists, Subaru’s Eyesight system uses stereoscopic cameras. It’s standard on the 2020 Legacy, Forester, Outback, and Ascent; and available on the Impreza, Crosstrek, and WRX.
Pedestrian Detection Saves Another Jaywalker
Highway driving was enjoyable with the driver assists, a nicely sound-insulated cabin, very good Harman Kardon premium audio, Wi-Fi on Starlink telematics cars, and USB jacks for four people. In town, the driver assists work well; a jaywalker who popped out mid-block was picked up and the car came to a quick (sudden) stop. But spirited back-roads driving was not as much fun as some other cars in its class, notably the Mazda6 and Honda Accord. The 2020 Subaru Legacy is based on the same new platform as the 2020 Subaru Outback crossover-almost-wagon. But the Legacy’s ground clearance is 5.9 inches to 8.7 inches for the Outback. So the Legacy is fine in the rain, snow, and on gravel roads, but not the first choice in Subarus if the road to your country cabin is deeply rutted.
Subaru has rudimentary self-driving capabilities utilizing EyeSight, although Subaru doesn’t consider it to be formal self-drive tech and has no Eye-something shorthand name such as, say, EyeDrive. (BMW might not be amused.) Once activated, it centers you on a highway and proceeds at a pre-set speed, slowing for cars in front of you. It combines Subaru’s Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control feature with Lane Centering. As with other vehicles, activation is a multi-step process.
DriverFocus, on upper trim lines, combines a camera and infrared illuminator. It watches to see if the driver’s eyes are on the road ahead.
DriverFocus: Big Brother Is on Your Side
Take your eyes off the road, and the DriverFocus eye-tracker tells you to pay attention.
Subaru DriverFocus, an eyebrow module at the top of the center stack, contains a camera and IR illuminator to track where the driver is looking, and rats you out after 10-15 seconds of not looking ahead. GM’s highly regarded Super Cruise self-driving technology uses eye-tracking also.
Some driver-attention monitors count the micro-movements a driver continually makes as he or she drives.
I had two concerns with my test car: I was startled a couple of times by the gas-saving stop-start system. Occasionally as the engine came to a stop at a traffic light, the steering wheel on my test car abruptly turned a couple of inches and twice caught my thumb that was loosely holding the wheel next to the spoke. After the second time, I decided to keep my thumbs off the thumb grips once this car stopped at a light.
The infotainment system had trouble parsing some spoken commands, wanted to drive me to the intersecting street with the same name plus “Extension” at the end, and occasionally would not connect an iPhone using two different Apple cables or with Bluetooth. On sunny days, the LCD was sometimes hard to read and the brushed chrome-look trim strip around the center display reflected the sun’s glare.
The Subaru Legacy instrument panel. The center multi-information looks busy. (It is.) But it also gives the driver lots of information at a glance. If this feels like TMI, you can flip to simpler views.
EyeSight Is Improved, Still Unique
Subaru says EyeSight has been improved and I sensed that both in the ability to pick up a car ahead from a greater distance and to be less affected in the rain. In some ways, EyeSight in snowy conditions may be better than radar in that windshield wipers clear the paths in front of the two cameras. If snow blocks the radar sensor, you have to get out and scrape it off with a brush or your gloved hand, assuming the driver knows where the sensor is located in the grille. Also, snow and rain reduce the effectiveness of radar to some degree.
Subaru Legacy Touring XT, the top trim line.
Safety Features Abound
Even if you are a statistically good driver, a car such as the Legacy improves your odds of staying safe. It also improves pedestrians’ odds: A 2019 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study found Eyesight-equipped Subarus reduce pedestrian-injury claims by 35 percent. IIHS also found Subarus with second-generation Eyesight did better than first-generation systems dating to 2010. IIHS said it found no significant self-selection bias, meaning the idea that safety-conscious good drivers might seek out safe-seeming Subarus and Volvos. Separately, IIHS found Subarus with EyeSight had up fewer rear-end collisions and passenger injuries.
How solid is Subaru on driver assists and safety technology? Here’s a rundown:

Should You Buy?
The 2020 Subaru Legacy is a solid midsize car for people who don’t need a status symbol. The Legacy wins a lot of awards but not all of them. Consumer Reports has it as the best midsize sedan and one of only 10 CR Top Picks among 300 models for 2020. In contrast, Car and Driver put the Legacy eighth behind the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, and the Mazda Mazda6, among others. Guess which publication favors safety features and comfortable ride versus spirited handling? The Legacy is also a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, which means good ratings in crash tests, advanced or superior ratings in available front crash prevention, and (the plus part) acceptable or good headlamps standard.
We like the Legacy a lot, even if within Subaru this is an outlier, a sedan in a company known for outdoorsy crossovers and SUVs: Crosstrek, Forester, Outback, Ascent. The Ascent had arguably been the best midsize SUV until the Kia Telluride / Hyundai Palisade came along last year. The Legacy had been unique in offering all-wheel-drive, but the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry added it for 2020.
The steering wheel has big buttons and rockers, all legibly labeled. If only all cars were this clear with switchgear.
Subaru is a relatively reliable brand. The car is eminently practical. From the side, though, it’s hard to distinguish from a half-dozen other brands. Fuel economy is good, an EPA combined rating of 23 mpg for the turbo models, 29 mpg for the non-turbo. Real-world mileage should be several mpg higher, and with judicious driving, the non-turbo could approach 40 on the highway.
If you’re shopping Subaru for max safety, we’d suggest: Move past the Legacy base ($23,645 with freight) because you can’t get blind-spot warning / rear-cross-traffic alert or safety telematics, and past the Legacy Premium ($25,895) because you can get BSW / RCTA, but not reverse automatic braking (RAB). Blind-spot warning matters: Not all young drivers know to check side mirrors and look over their shoulders; older drivers may know, but may not have the dexterity to turn their heads sideways.
Every Legacy has dual front USB jacks (above) and, except for the base model (below), two more jacks in the back. Note how every jack and switch is nicely and legibly lettered.
The Legacy Sport ($27,845) lets you get BSW-RCTA-RAB in a $2,245 options package, along with a power moonroof and onboard navigation, for $30,090 total. Or for $30,645, you can get the Legacy Limited that includes BSW-RCTA-RAB, and the one options package, $2,045, gives you the moonroof again, a heated steering wheel, and DriverFocus. The top two trim lines, the Limited XT ($35,095) and Touring XT ($36,795), give you nice and nicer leather, DriverFocus, and the moonroof. So the sweet spot may be the Legacy Sport plus the options package, or the Legacy Limited, at about $30K each. Cross-brand shoppers comparing front-drive-only midsize competitors should attribute about $1,500 of Subaru’s price to AWD.
The Subaru Legacy should be at the top of your consideration set along with the Hyundai Sonata, the ExtremeTech 2020 Car of the Year. I had a RHD kind of day today!!! A friend of mine works for Subaru R&D and he showed me the JDM RHD pre-production 2019(?) Impreza he brought home.
And before that, I hooked up with three other Subie guys and we cruised up to a Subaru car show at the High Octane Bakery north of Detroit. There were MANY A SUBARU, and many with copycat/tribute wraps that mimic the classic WRC design, but this car was an actual ProDrive WRC car imported to Florida via shenanigans. It’s plated and registered in Michigan now somehow! (2002 WRX STI.)
(LOL everyone in a normally-RHD country who views this post is just gonna be like... uh okay. THIS IS IN THE UNITED STATES. We’re LHD! And you can’t import cars until they’re at least 25 years old--neither of which these are.)

Volkswagen unveils its most powerful Golf yet
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/volkswagen-unveils-its-most-powerful-golf-yet/
Volkswagen unveils its most powerful Golf yet
Volkswagen said it won’t be selling the base version of its newly redesigned Golf compact car in the United States, but it will sell this new, more powerful Golf R, which has a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 27 more horsepower than the previous Golf R model. It also sells the 228-horsepower Golf GTI here.
That’s because, while most Americans prefer crossover SUVs — and VW has several of those to offer — there’s still a market here for small cars with outsized performance.
The new Golf R will be available in the US during the second half of 2021. VW hasn’t announced pricing yet, but prices for the 2019 Golf R started at over $40,000.
The Golf R will compete against models like the Subaru WRX STI, a version of the Subaru Impreza, and the Honda Civic Type R, both extreme performance versions of other efficient small cars.
The Golf R has an improved torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system that can automatically send more power to one or the other rear wheel depending on the traction needs from moment to moment. It also shifts power automatically from the front wheels to the rear as needed. The car’s top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.
The driver can select from different driving modes that change settings for the car’s steering, suspension, four-wheel-drive system and gas pedal response. Besides Comfort, Sport and Track modes, there is also a Special mode with settings designed for Germany’s famous Nürburgring Nordschleife track. Among other things, the suspension is softer than in Track mode to better handle the Nordschleife’s undulating pavement.
There is also a Drift mode — which is not intended for use on public roads — to allow drivers to more easily slide the car sideways and do smokey, tire-burning donuts.
The Golf R will be available with either a seven-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. The manual transmission was an important feature for the US market, which has been the number one market for the Golf R worldwide. In the past, 40% of Golf R buyers in the US have chosen the manual transmission, according to a VW spokesman. The automatic transmission will be manually shiftable, with steering wheel paddles.

This combines battery-powered electric motor assistance with two of Subaru's core technologies: Boxer Engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. With e-BOXER, the Forester now offers smoother and more responsive acceleration, enhanced off-road capability and better efficiency. This also makes it well suited for both city and highway driving.

Frugal, Funky, and Fun: The 10 Safest Small Cars for 2020
Here at MotorTrend we measure the fun stuff, but testing car safety is out of our wheelhouse. For that, we turn to the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
Those agencies crash, smash, and break poor, innocent cars all for the sake of keeping you safe on the road. The NHTSA rates safety out of five stars, and the IIHS awards the safest cars on sale with a Top Safety Pick + designation.
You don’t need to buy a giant SUV or expensive luxury car to stay safe on the road. In fact, these affordable small cars earn high marks in crash performance. These are the safest small cars for 2020, according to the IIHS and NHTSA.
2020 Honda Insight: IIHS Top Safety Pick +; NHTSA Five-Star Overall Rating
The Honda Insight is a great compact hybrid sedan, achieving terrific fuel economy while not being terrible to drive—or look at. It was a finalist in our 2019 Car of the Year competition, and we added one to our long-term test fleet for a 12-month ownership evaluation. We like how infrequently we go to the gas station, and the aptitude of its standard driver assist features. It’s zippy around town and a comfy cruiser on long road trips. The Honda Insight is among the safest small cars for 2020, earning top marks across the board from IIHS and NHTSA.
2020 Subaru Impreza: IIHS Top Safety Pick +; NHTSA Five-Star Overall Rating
Subaru spins the Impreza into numerous variants, and regardless of your choice, they all earn some of the best safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. The standard Subaru Impreza is comfortable and refined, if quite slow. Of course, hatchback is the way to go. We found the related Crosstrek surprisingly capable off-road, even in its fuel-efficient hybrid variant. If these choices are too pokey for you, the WRX is a classic turbocharged all-wheel-drive sport sedan that turns out 269 hp. It’s available in some cool limited edition trims, too. Opting for the EyeSight driver assist system makes this safe small car even safer, but it’s not standard and is unavailable on the WRX.
2020 Hyundai Elantra Sedan: IIHS Top Safety Pick +; NHTSA Four-Star Overall Rating
Excellent build quality is apparent in new Hyundais, and contributes to the safety ratings on the brand’s 2020 Elantra compact sedan. It provides solid bang for the buck, packing standard active safety features across all trims. Interior trimmings are unremarkable, but we appreciate its roomy back seat. Driving enthusiasts should opt for the Elantra Sport, which has a 201-hp turbocharged I-4 and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It scored well in IIHS testing, save for the poor-performing headlights on lower trims. Also, the NHTSA found excessive intrusion in the rear side impact test. The Hyundai Elantra hatchback performs about the same and is an IIHS Top Safety Pick, albeit without the “+” bonus. Regardless, the Hyundai Elantra is a safe compact car for 2020.
2020 Kia Forte: IIHS Top Safety Pick +; NHTSA Four-Star Overall Rating
Dare we say that the Kia Forte is a looker? It has upscale and sporty styling, but unfortunately, not-so-sporty driving dynamics due to the performance-sapping CVT. Nonetheless it’s a nice place to spend time, with an attractive cabin layout and a quiet, comfortable ride. On the safety front, a suite of driver-assist features comes standard, and the Forte returns impressively short 60-0 braking distances. Given that this Kia shares its platform with the Hyundai Elantra, it’s unsurprising that it performs the same in IIHS and NHTSA tests; weak headlights and excessive side intrusion are the primary issues. Otherwise, it’s a safe compact car, scoring highly in every other area.
2020 Hyundai Kona: IIHS Top Safety Pick +; NHTSA Five-Star Overall Rating
More than a hatchback, yet not quite a full-bore SUV, the funky Hyundai Kona is among the safest small cars for 2020. We dig its agile handling and, with the optional turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive, surprisingly quick acceleration. The Kona seems to live up to its “Big on Adventure, Smart on Space” tagline, as we’ve taken it on some proper road trips and even used it as a moving vehicle. Its available suite of driver safety aids is impressive. Despite a fair amount of road noise and a miniscule back seat, the Kona remains a charmer.
2020 Kia Niro Hybrid: IIHS Top Safety Pick +; NHTSA Four-Star Overall Rating
Whether in its standard or plug-in hybrid variants, the Kia Niro is a safe compact car. The IIHS found it to have top-performing crashworthiness, but headlight performance was an issue on lower trims. NHTSA side impact testing earned five stars, but four-star rollover and frontal crash protection earned the Niro a four-star score overall. It being a hatchback, the Niro offers ample room for people and gear inside, and the hybrid powertrain achieves impressive fuel economy—over 51 mpg combined, by our Real MPG measurements. The Kia Niro EV hasn’t been safety tested yet, but if it performs similarly to its combustion-assisted counterparts, you can expect to get a small car with among the best safety ratings.
2020 Kia Soul: IIHS Top Safety Pick +
The Kia Soul is all-new for 2020, continuing with quirky styling and some of the best safety ratings for small cars. We like its cargo capacity and refined drivetrain, with good tuning for the CVT. Being able to see everything around you is the first step to safe driving, and the Soul’s upright sides and big windows provide a great view. The trade-off for those is a lot of wind noise at highway speeds, but that’s muted by the upgraded surround sound system in the Kia Soul GT-Line Turbo. While the 2020 Kia Soul hasn’t been tested by the NHTSA, it earned high marks from the IIHS. Poor performing headlights on lower trims was the only ding.
2020 Lexus UX: IIHS Top Safety Pick +; NHTSA Five-Star Overall Rating
We’re not convinced the Lexus UX 200 and UX 250h are real SUVs, given their propensity to flounder off pavement. They’re also not anywhere near as roomy as what we’d expect from true utility vehicles. Those concerns aside, the UX is stylish, upscale, and a compelling value. Interior quality is what you’d expect from a Lexus, with a smart dashboard layout and premium materials. The infotainment system used in the UX and other Lexus products is due for an update, though. Regardless, it’s undeniably safe, with standard driver-assist features and strong crashworthiness scores from the IIHS and NHTSA making it one of the safest small cars for 2020.
2020 Toyota Corolla: IIHS Top Safety Pick; NHTSA Five-Star Rating
The Toyota Corolla is the epitome of small cars, and in its newest generation it’s safer than ever. Its standard suite of driver-assist features provides what might be the closest thing to self-driving for the least amount of money to date. Ride and handling is improved, and while it never feels powerful, it borders on being fun to drive. Corolla safety scores are identical whether in hatchback or sedan form, including the hybrid. The IIHS gave all variants top marks in crashworthiness, but noted room for improvement with its headlights. Meanwhile, the Corolla got four stars in rollover protection from the NHTSA, but five stars in every other area.
2019 Volkswagen GTI: IIHS Top Safety Pick; NHTSA Five-Star Rating
Fun driving dynamics and great safety are combined in the Volkswagen GTI. This classic hot hatchback has a powerful turbocharged engine and can be had with a slick manual or quick-shifting dual-clutch transmission. When it’s not being tossed down a twisty road, it’s supremely practical for daily needs, too. The GTI’s next generation is right around the corner, but for the time being this one is among the safest small cars for 2020. The NHTSA gave it four-star front impact and rollover ratings, but five-star side impact and overall scores. IIHS data shows that Volkswagen GTI safety scores are improved with the optional driver assist suite and upgraded LED headlights.
