The Audi R8: Origins, Generations, Specifications
Tumblr media
All things Audi R8 on Automobile.
Audi R8 Essential History Despite a rich motorsports history with overwhelming success in both rallying and endurance racing, Audi's always remained at arm's length when it came to producing a true sports car. The once-popular Audi TT has most of the right ingredients, but the front-wheel-drive underpinnings pulled primarily from the VW Golf kept it well below the Porsche Boxster, Nissan Z cars, and BMW's assorted roadsters and two-seat coupes.
Since the early 1980s, Audi remained content developing high-performance versions of its premium coupes and sedans, focusing on promoting all-wheel drive technology and turbocharged engines, even if the resulting speed-specials were softer and more road-oriented than the adrenalin-charging weapons from Mercedes-Benz' AMG or BMW's M division.
It was only during the early-2000s when the reality of an Audi supercar began to coalesce, born from Audi's ongoing Le Mans domination and the then-recent acquisition of Lamborghini by the Volkswagen Auto Group. To amortize the cost of development of the nascent Lamborghini Gallardo and to bring Audi a little closer in-line with Mercedes and BMW, the plan for the mid-engine Audi R8—the brand's first supercar—took shape with the Le Mans Quattro concept in 2003.
Audi Le Mans Quattro Concept Visually, the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept was nearly identical to the production R8 that arrived in 2007, though the wild twin-turbo V-10 engine was tossed for a more production-friendly iteration of Audi's naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V-8. Power was reasonable for a mid-engine sports car of the era, with 414 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque sent to all-four wheels through either Audi's R-Tronic six-speed automated manual or a gated six-speed manual transmission. Zero-to-60-mph times for these early R8s were around the low four-second mark, with a top speed around 188 mph.
The Audi R8 Goes V-10 For the 2009 model year, the R8's Lamborghini roots shone in full-force, when the updated 5.2-liter V-10 from the Lamborghini LP560-4 was shoehorned into the R8. Fun fact—that Lamborghini V-10 is actually an Audi V-10 pulled from the S6 and S8. So, the R8 V10 actually uses an Audi V-10 pulled from a Lamborghini, but we digress. The V-10 engine increased the R8's output to 518 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, dropping the zero-to-60 mph sprint to 3.9 seconds, and raising top speed to 196 mph.
The Audi R8 Spyder Drop-top Spyder variants launched for both the V-8 and the V-10 models, with the V-8 adding an extra 14 horsepower over the V-8 coupe, growing the total to 428 horsepower, though torque remained unchanged at 317 lb-ft. The limited edition R8 GT arrived in 2011, cutting 220 pounds from the curb weight of the regular R8 V10, while increasing the V-10's output to 552 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. As you'd expect, the R8 GT also brought with it a range of suspension, braking, and aerodynamic upgrades over the regular car to compensate for the additional power and to enlarge the overall performance envelope. Production of the GT was limited to 333 units worldwide, with an additional 333 unit run of the corresponding R8 GT Spyder.
The first-generation R8 received a mid-cycle refresh for 2012 in the rest of the world, arriving in the U.S. in 2013 as a 2014 model year. The refresh brought mostly aesthetic updates, though a few significant mechanical upgrades were also brought to the R8, most significantly a new seven-speed dual-clutch replacing the balky R-Tronic automated manual transmission. Standard magnetic damping was also added for the R8 V10, an optional upgrade for the V-8 models.
The R8 V10 Plus arrived on our shores in 2014, adding a new range-topping trim with extra power and performance in the same vein as the older R8 GT. The same 5.2-liter V-10 as found in the standard R8 V10 was upgraded to 542 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque in the R8 V10 Plus, which also got a re-tuned suspension, updated interior, and massaged aesthetics.
Second-Generation Audi R8 After these short-lived upgrades, the first-gen R8 was replaced by an all-new model in 2015 for the 2016 model year. In keeping with the Lamborghini bones of the prior generation, the second-gen R8 shares much of its structural DNA with the Lamborghini Huracan. This includes the familiar 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V-10—the only engine offered at the moment—initially available with either 533 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque in the base R8 coupe or 602 horsepower and 413 lb-ft in the R8 V10 Plus coupe. With the exception of the limited-edition R8 RWS (Rear Wheel Series), power is transferred to all-four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
For 2019, the second-gen R8 was updated with extra power and an aesthetic refresh. Power for the base coupe jumped to 562 horsepower and 413 lb-ft, while the newly renamed R8 Coupe Performance Quattro packs 602 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. Performance for all iterations of the second-gen R8 is impressive; factory-quoted zero-to-60 mph times range between 3.2 seconds and 3.5 seconds, though these times have proven to be conservative in independent tests.
Audi R8 Highlights Time will likely be kind to the Audi R8. The first generation of the supercar consistently ranks at the top of many enthusiast's lists of best designs of the 2000s, and it's only going to get better with time. Although older R8s may carry a bit of a stigma as simply a used supercar, give it time—or pick one up now, while they are at the bottom of their depreciation curve.
Once the first R8s are out of the too-new-to-be-classic but too-old-to-be-cool dead zone, the R8 will be one of the better ways to get into something genuinely exotic for not much more than the price of entry to a loaded mid-size crossover SUV. Early V-8s are particularly inexpensive to purchase, and compared to a Ferrari or Lamborghini of similar vintage, significantly less expensive to keep on the road. As far as upkeep price goes, think more than a BMW or Audi sedan, and less than an Aston Martin—maintenance on a regular Porsche 911 is likely a good comparison.
By design, the R8 of any generation is a more professional, lower-key supercar—if that's even a thing. The current R8 is priced closer to the Porsche 911 Turbo, current Acura NSX, and Aston Martin Vantage than to Lamborghini's Huracán or McLaren's 720s, but in our experience, the R8 doesn't fall far short of those more exotic models in performance or theater. In fact, we'd likely take a new R8 over any of the listed alternatives on the strength of its sound and the vicious launch control. We've also heard whispers that a first-gen Audi R8 V10 with the gated manual transmission is one of the best "exotic" experiences that can be had for less than $100,000, so there's that.
Audi R8 Buying Tips Audi R8s of any generation or spec are fairly robust and shouldn't provide too many undue surprises mechanically. A thick sheaf of maintenance records is always a welcome inclusion with any potential purchase, as is a pre-purchase inspection at a local specialist or dealer. Parts availability for the R8 is high, considering even the oldest R8s still have factory support from Audi—for now. As stated above, expect regular maintenance bills similar to what you'd expect of a Porsche 911.
If you are in the market for a first-gen R8, we highly suggest you seek only those with either the six-speed manual transmission or the later dual-clutch examples. Avoid the R-Tronic at all costs; it's clunky, slow, relatively fragile, and for some enthusiasts, ruins the overall experience. Engine type matters, too, as V-8s will obviously be more affordable than the V-10s, but there is a significant difference in both speed and upkeep between the two engines—as well as a difference in prestige, which can enhance (or detract from) collectibility.
Audi R8 Auctions Despite undeniable desirability, the Audi R8 isn't collectible enough to cross the stage at major auction houses—yet. Bring a Trailer never disappoints, as the healthy record of sold R8s is enough to give an idea of what you might pay for a first generation. For second-generation R8s—the current model—there are enough on Audi lots that you might be better off getting one straight from the source.
This 2009 Audi R8 4.2 w/ six-speed manual and only 8,000 miles sold for $67,000
A 2010 Audi R8 V10 w/ six-speed manual sold for $72,000
This second-gen 2018 Audi R8 RWS claimed $118,000
A late-model first-gen 2015 Audi R8 4.2 with six-speed manual was bought for $80,000
Audi R8 Quick Facts   First year of production: 2007 Last year of production: Ongoing Base Price: $171,150 (2020) Audi's first supercar Lamborghini bones for (relatively) cheap Time will be very, very kind to the R8 family We'll take ours with the V-10 and the gated manual, please Audi R8 Articles On Automobile We drove the refreshed first-generation Audi R8 in 2012.
Here's our review of the second-generation Audi R8 V10 Plus.

And just for fun, here's a test of the race-ready Audi R8 LMS.
Audi R8 FAQ You have questions about the Audi R8. Automobile has answers. Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked Audi R8 queries:
Is The Audi R8 A Supercar? Absolutely. With any engine or transmission and from either generation, the Audi R8 is quick, fast, and visually stunning enough to be considered a supercar.
How Fast Does An Audi R8 Go? The early first-gen Audi R8 4.2s topped out at 188 mph, while the latest and greatest Audi R8 V10 Performance Quattro smacks a mighty 206 mph.
How Much Is The New Audi R8? The base 2020 Audi R8 will run you $171,150.
What Year Is The Best Audi R8? Hmm, great question. We reckon it depends on what you want from the car. For an engaging drive, we'd pick the cleanest first-gen V-10 with the gated manual we could find. However, the current R8 is stunningly quick and aurally spectacular as any car we've driven, so perhaps one of the few R8 RWS would find its way into our dream garage. ผลบอล7mคะแนน

The Least Boring Cars, Trucks, and SUVs Under $55,000
Lucky you, car shopper with cash to spend! The top end of your budget is $55,000, and you’d like to grab the most car (or truck, or SUV) you can for that sum. You’re not interested in something average. Perhaps you’re simply looking for more character than you’d get in some appliance-grade luxury product, or performance is more your bag. Whatever you have in mind, it can’t be boring. So, what can you afford for between, say, $45,000 and $55,000 that will bring uncommon joy or a sense of occasion to your commute? Try these, arranged alphabetically and with their base prices called out:
2020 Audi TT | Base Price: $46,495
Forget the debate over whether or not the Audi TT qualifies as a “sports car.” The small coupe and roadster pairing certainly delivers an exciting drive along with pointy, pill-shaped looks you won’t confuse with any other car. Mostly thanks to the TT’s small size, its assembly of modest components from throughout the Volkswagen Group universe combine for an experience beyond the sum of its parts. A 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard, along with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive. The cabin takes “driver-focused” design to a new level with its novel gauge-cluster display (without a central screen—sorry, passenger!) controlled by and facing only the driver. For under $55,000, you can buy a modestly equipped TT coupe ($46,495) or convertible ($49,995), but the spicier TTS and TT RS models start at more than our price cap.
2020 BMW M240i | Base Price: $46,795
This might be a little confusing, but stick with us: There are two 2-series BMWs these days. Two times two does not equal four, although there is a 4-series. Anyway, look, the 2-series to buy, if you’re a fan of BMWs of yore, is the two-door. (BMW recently introduced a new, front-drive-based four-door compact 2-series Gran Coupe variant—but it’s completely different from this one, which sits on a proper rear-drive platform.) For our budget range here, spring for the six-cylinder M240i model—a less-expensive four-cylinder 230i is also offered, and is great for those with slightly lower budgets. Grab the six-speed manual transmission, skip the available xDrive all-wheel drive or the convertible model, and have yourself a fine-driving, tidy BMW performance coupe that evokes the brand’s best days.
2020 BMW Z4 | Base Price: $50,695
Dig the new Toyota Supra but wish it came in convertible form? You’re in luck—the BMW Z4 is, basically, a Supra underneath and is offered only as a convertible. (The Toyota, alternately, is only sold in coupe form.) The goods are the same, but the details are slightly different. For example, the only Z4 that qualifies for our list is the 254-hp four-cylinder sDrive30i, which starts at $50,695. The same turbocharged inline-six you get in the Supra is relegated to the $64,695 Z4 sDriveM40i. Otherwise, the rear-drive chassis and eight-speed automatic transmission are similar, and the BMW has its own rakish, eye-catching styling. BMW and Toyota co-developed the Z4 and Supra, and both are assembled at the same Austrian Magna Steyr plant. Can’t decide between the two? We compared them head-to-head—and if that doesn’t help, well, the Supra also makes this under-$55,000 list but comes standard with the Z4’s available bigger engine option.
2020 Ford F-150 Raptor | Base Price: $55,150
The incredibly bad-ass Ford F-150 Raptor doesn’t so much sneak under our price cap as it sort of straddles it—and we couldn’t resist bending the rules to include it, even though it starts at $55,150 including the mandatory destination charge. Our rationale? That the F-150 Raptor comes pretty decently equipped, in full-size pickup terms, even beyond the standard pile of hard-core off-road hardware, including a 450-hp twin-turbo V-6, four-wheel drive, Fox shocks, burly tires, and sweet wide-stance bodywork. (Almost) nothing else on this list can be jumped, either.
In entry-level form, the F-150 Raptor comes in the F-series’ SuperCab extended-cab body style, with stubby, clamshell rear doors. What this body style gives up in rear-seat room (it still seats five), it more than makes up for with its rad, desert-race-truck appearance. The larger Crew Cab model with four normal-size doors costs more.
2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt | Base Price: $48,900
Break out your tweed blazer, dark-colored turtleneck, and most retro shades. It’s time to role play as Steve McQueen, the captain of cool. You’ll need a ride, and if some vintage motorcycle or some such thing isn’t available, you can walk into your Ford dealership and pick up one of these, the Mustang Bullitt Edition. Modeled after the Highland Green ’68 Mustang fastback driven by McQueen’s hard-edged cop character in the movie Bullitt, the modern Mustang wears black-painted Torq Thrust–style rims, minimal badging, and subtle retro cues such as the cue-ball shift knob and ribbed seat covers. It’s only available in Shadow Black or, our pick, Highland Green. And it features the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V-8 enhanced by the GT350’s intake. Output swells to 480 horsepower, and the sound—oh, the sound!—that this ’Stang makes is epic.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Mojave | Base Price: $45,370
Meet the new top-of-the-range Jeep Gladiator, the desert-focused Gladiator Mojave. Perched above the rock-bashing Rubicon trim level, the Mojave receives unique hardware to refashion the Gladiator into a higher-speed off-roader more along the lines of Ford’s F-150 Raptor. (Jeep even considers the Gladiator “Desert-Rated,” instead of the “Trail-Rated” descriptor it uses for its regular off-roaders.) Remote-reservoir shocks and hydraulic bump stops help the Jeep pickup quickly cycle its suspension over washboard surfaces or—get this—jumps without overheating its shocks or shaking its occupants into oblivion. Other equipment includes 33-inch tires, Mojave graphics, a front-end suspension lift, skid plate, and special low-range gearing that can propel the Jeep at up to 50 mph (versus 30 mph on the other Gladiator models).
2020 Land Rover Defender | Base Price: $50,925
Land Rover’s Defender 4×4 is back in the U.S. after a multi-decade hiatus, and it’s all-new. The Defender has traded its old-school, body-on-frame dual-solid-axle setup for a more modern independent suspension and a unibody design. The fabled nameplate lives up to its reputation, as we found on a recent drive in Africa’s wilderness, and better yet, pricing starts at just over 50 grand. While that sum only buys you an entry-level four-door Defender with the base turbocharged four-cylinder engine (instead of the upmarket V-6), if you stick with the absolute base model, you get an awesome set of white-painted wheels. So, there’s that.
2020 Porsche Macan | Base Price: $52,250
Have you always wanted to buy a new Porsche? Guess what? The Macan is the brand’s most affordable model, and the only one that starts under our price cap. The downside? It is a compact luxury crossover. The upside? Porsche builds it, meaning it drives like a hot hatchback, not some top-heavy SUV. For less than $55,000, you can afford the entry-level, four-cylinder Porsche Macan, which has 248 horsepower. The Macan S, which gets a turbocharged V-6, costs just over $60,000, and the spicier GTS and Turbo models are pricier still. But, hey, it’s a Porsche! Just be careful with the Macan’s myriad options—like all Porsches, its list of optional extras could stretch to the moon and back.
2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro | Base Price: $50,985
There are quite a few off-roaders that make this list of nonboring stuff, and the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is one with a baked-in legacy of toughness and ruggedness. The TRD Pro trim sits atop the capable 4Runner lineup, bringing sweet matte-black 17-inch TRD (Toyota Racing Development) wheels, a special front skid plate, Fox shocks, TRD front springs, a locking rear differential, a roof basket, and retro-style “TOYOTA” grille lettering in place of a Toyota logo. Four-wheel drive is standard. If there is a hangup, it’s that the general 4Runner package, right down to its ancient 4.0-liter V-6 engine, is old-school and delivers pretty abysmal on-road dynamics. But that just keeps things interesting, and that ponderous pavement behavior translates to goat-like off-road dexterity.
2020 Toyota GR Supra | Base Price: $50,945
The resurrected-for-2020 Toyota Supra is a performance bargain, a thoroughbred sports car that starts at pretty much fifty grand on the dot. It comes with a 335-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine that, for 2021, is being boosted to 382 horsepower. (A new 255-hp four-cylinder engine, like that in the entry-level BMW Z4, joins the lineup, too.) The rear-drive Supra is mechanically similar to the BMW Z4—the two share a platform—but comes only as a fixed-roof coupe, while the BMW is strictly a roadster. With voluptuous and unsubtle looks, the Supra looks fast; thanks to its well-tuned hardware, it actually is fast.

AUDI TT: A LIMITED EDITION "20 YEARS" ANNIVERSARY
Before being marketed, the Audi TT first appeared in 1995 in the form of a concept car at the Tokyo show: Audi TTS Roadster. The Audi TT 20 years echoes this "original TT" with finishes inspired by the style study of the time. Let's focus on this anniversary version that was presented in July 2018 during the restyling of the Audi TT range . At the beginning of the year, the Audi TT 20 Years is once again talking about her, including a video published by the German manufacturer (see end of article). On the program for this limited edition are the "Nano Gray" and "Silver Arrow" shades. The "Nano Gray" being the color of the 1995 TTS Roadster. The Audi TT 20 Years also benefits from Audi rings on its profile, Matrix OLED taillights, exclusive exhaust outlets in stainless steel as well as specific 19 "high-gloss wheels, not to mention the" Black Style Outdoor Pack " Audi exclusive ".

AUDI TT: A LIMITED EDITION "20 YEARS" ANNIVERSARY
Recalling the TTS Roadster, the interior of the Audi TT 20 Years brings out a brown leather upholstery. The latter is supported by yellow stitching. In terms of engine, this version already promised a "future collector" is proposed with the 4-cylinder 2.0 l 45 TFSI of 245 horses for 370 Nm of torque. The quattro all-wheel drive is also topical, as is the S tronic 7 gearbox.
Finally, the Audi TT Coupe 20 Years starts from 64 900 € and, the price of the Audi TT Roadster 20 Years starts at 68 400 €. The French website dedicated to the booking of this anniversary model is already showing a good demand because very few copies are still available today.

Audi Sport Deserves its Own Hypercar, CEO Says
Ever since Audi Sport was born from the ashes of Quattro GmbH in late 2016, the performance unit went to work launching eight models within 18 months. Over the coming years, it will bring out its own versions of Audi crossovers and electric vehicles. Although Audi Sport obviously has a lot on its plate, CEO Stephan Winkelmann would eventually like to see a halo car for the brand. Speaking with Automotive News, Winkelmann acknowledged he’s interested in a low-volume exotic car that slots above the R8. “I’m very keen on working on this in the future,” he said. “I think not only the brand deserves it, but there is a demand outside, and the [customers] are looking into it.” If an Audi Sport hypercar does come to fruition, it would borrow components from Volkswagen Group but maintain its own identity. It would serve as a halo model not only for Audi Sport but also for the Audi brand. While such a vehicle is definitely on his radar, Winkelmann said his immediate goal is expanding the rest of the Audi Sport lineup. Right now, Audi Sport is in charge of a variety of models including the R8, RS 3, RS 7, and TT RS, as well as race cars for Formula E, GT3, and GT4 series. The only RS crossover it has is the RS Q3 sold outside the U.S., but that may soon change. Audi Sport should grow its crossover offerings with an RS Q5 expected to debut later this year and an RS Q8 that could arrive by the end of this decade. Another new frontier will involve electric vehicles. In 2020 or 2021, Audi Sport will offer a version of the e-tron in the form of a coupe-like sedan and/or a coupe-like SUV, says Winkelmann. 2020 Audi A5 Sportback 🔥 ______________________________________ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌙 [9/10/19] #ACNAfterDark Somehow I forgot to include the Sportback in the updated A5 post so here it is: The facelifted 2020 A5 and S5 Sportback are here and bring loads of technological and mechanical changes so let’s dive in!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🏁 @Allcarnews Spec Sheet: So far we only have the European specifications so don’t worry US buyers! All four engines get a mild hybrid 48v system and the 2.0L Turbos start at 161HP, and around 188HP. (Another 2.0L Turbo should be coming with more power aswell) Then the Europeans lose the gas S5 and get the TDI 3.0L TwinTurbo diesel V6 making 342HP and 516 lb-ft of torque while US buyers will get a 3.0L TT V6 making 349HP and 369 lb-ft of torque. 🏁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Outside of the new A5 line, Audi has fitted all new Matrix LED lights upfront and new LED taillights to give the car a more agressive look. Audi also has gone to slightly revise the design of the front and rear fascias! Inside is a major update as the old MMI system is OUT in place for the new 10.1in touchscreen and the 12.3in Virtual Cockpit. There are also new interior lighting options and up to 11 new exterior colors with that stunning District green being one of them. Info for the US markets should be coming soon! ________________________________________ ACN EXTRA: Keep in mind this is just a mid cycle refresh and not an “all new” car. ________________________________________ -Text by @allcarnews -Images by Audi ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #Audi #S5 #A5 #V6 #TDI #Quattro #RS5 #coupe #German #Sportback #carbon ||#powerful #performance #turbocharged #supercharged #Supercar An #allcarnews post https://www.instagram.com/p/B2QaAt4BYSy/?igshid=79v30wk4so9v

Nosso fãs no Brasil reconhecerão o percurso imediatamente, incluindo o famoso S do Senna e a Ferradura (...)
