Australian Car Sales in May: Electric and Hybrid Cars Accounted for One in Four

According to foreign media reports, the Australian Federal Automobile Industry Chamber of Commerce released automobile sales data in May, the month of new car sales in Australia hit a record high. Sales of hybrid vehicles doubled year on year to reach 15.8 percent of the market, compared with a 0.4 percent increase in electric vehicle sales.

Almost one in every four new cars in Australia is currently a low-emission vehicle, so hybrid and electric vehicles are taking a greater share of the market. Meanwhile, Australians’ love affair with larger cars is still on the rise, with SUVs still dominating and ute sales continuing to grow.

This trend has more than doubled the popularity of hybrid cars in 2024, with more than 66,000 units sold, compared to less than 30,000 in the same period in 2023.

Electric vehicle sales also increased in Australia in May, with more than 8,900 units sold, accounting for 8.1 per cent of all new car sales, with more than 40,000 new electric vehicles on the road in Australia in the first five months of the year.

Tony Weber, the chamber’s chief executive, said the auto industry is working hard to meet the needs of drivers. “The continued growth in vehicle sales underscores consumer confidence and demonstrates the industry’s ability to meet the diverse needs of Australian consumers in the face of the current economic challenges,” he said.

However, large vehicles remain a popular choice for drivers regardless of fuel consumption, with SUVs accounting for more than half of vehicles sold and light commercial vehicles accounting for 22 percent of new vehicles. UTE also took three of the top five best-selling cars in May, with the Ford Ranger taking the top spot, followed by the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu’s D-Max light truck in fourth place.

Toyota was again the top-selling car manufacturer in Australia for the month, followed by Ford, Mazda, Kia and Hyundai. The data also showed a drop in sales for electric car leader Tesla, with the US company selling 3,567 vehicles in Australia in May, compared with 4,476 in the same month last year.

Its main electric car rival BYD, however, saw sales climb, with the Chinese company selling 1,914 electric vehicles in the month, up 32 percent from a year earlier.

The growing sales of electric and hybrid vehicles come ahead of the introduction in January of Australia’s first fuel efficiency standard, a legal standard that will set emissions limits on carmakers’ fleets of passenger cars, large and commercial vehicles in an attempt to reduce transport emissions by 2030.

A Ford apresentou, nesta quarta-feira, 11, no Salão de Frankfurt, na Alemanha, a maior linha de veículos elétricos já lançada pela marca no mercado europeu. As novidades incluem o híbrido Puma EcoBoost, os híbridos plug-in Explorer e Tourneo Custom e o Kuga, primeiro modelo da marca a oferecer as opções de híbrido leve, total e plug-in. No início do ano, a Ford anunciou que todos os seus veículos novos de passageiros na Europa terão uma opção elétrica ou híbrida leve, total ou plug-in. Serão 17 modelos até 2024, sendo oito deles lançados já em 2019.

Até o final de 2022, os modelos elétricos da Ford devem representar mais da metade de suas vendas de veículos de passageiros na região, superando os carros convencionais a gasolina e diesel, e cheguem ao marco de 1 milhão de unidades.

“A eletrificação avança rapidamente como principal tendência do mercado e estamos aumentando substancialmente as opções de modelos elétricos para os nossos consumidores”, disse Stuart Rowley, presidente da Ford Europa.

Na contramão da modernização e da ampliação da linha para a Europa, a Ford mantém no mercado brasileiro apenas os modelos Ka (hatch e sedan), EcoSport, Fusion, Edge, Ranger e Mustang.

O último dos elétricos da Ford expostos é uma perua. A Mondeo é totalmente híbrida com propulsão elétrica e a gasolina com rodagem refinada, principalmente no trânsito urbano.

Ainda de acordo com a Ford, em 2020 chega ao mercado o novo SUV elétrico de performance inspirado no Mustang, com uma autonomia elétrica estimada de 600 km – calculada pelo World Harmonised Light Veicle Test Procedure (WLTP) – e capacidade de carga rápida.

A fabricante montou uma área especial em seu estande, chamada Go Electric, com experiências interativas e de realidade aumentada para o público conhecer o funcionamento e a sensação de dirigir um elétrico da Ford, desmistificando essa tecnologia. Uma delas é o primeiro simulador de aceleração de carro elétrico do mundo.

Elétricos da Ford contam com novas soluções de recarga

A disponibilidade de pontos de recarga para carros elétricos vem crescendo rapidamente na Europa. A Ford anunciou uma parceria com seis grandes empresas de energia do continente para oferecer uma nova estação de recarga doméstica e tarifas diferenciadas para os usuários de híbridos plug-in. Ela tem potência 50% maior que uma tomada comum e reduz em até um terço o tempo de recarga.

Outra novidade da marca é um aplicativo para smartphones e tablets que permite aos donos de híbridos plug-in encontrar um ponto de recarga e fazer o pagamento. Ele é oferecido em parceria com a NewMotion, a maior rede pública de recarga da Europa, com mais de 118.000 pontos em 30 países.

The Tipping Point

Today at the Frankfurt Motor Show we are showcasing a range of new vehicles that will help pave the way for electrified models to outnumber combined sales of conventional diesel and petrol models in just a few years.

Earlier this year, we committed that every new passenger vehicle nameplate in Europe will include an electrified option and shared our initial plans at a special event in Amsterdam.

Now we are displaying the all-new Kuga Plug-In Hybrid and all-new Explorer Plug-In Hybrid SUVs, as well as the new Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid people-mover, the new Puma EcoBoost Hybrid compact crossover and the Ford Mondeo Hybrid wagon.

Our new Mustang-inspired all-electric performance SUV will arrive in 2020, and in total, we plan to launch eight electrified vehicles this year that will contribute to sales of 1 million electrified vehicles in Europe by the end of 2022. A further nine vehicles are planned for introduction by 2024.

“With electrification fast becoming the mainstream, we are substantially increasing the number of electrified models and powertrain options for our customers to choose from to suit their needs,” 

said Stuart Rowley, president, Ford of Europe. “By making it easier than ever to seamlessly shift into an electrified vehicle, we expect the majority of our passenger vehicle sales to be electrified by the end of 2022.”

Puma Titanium X

The high specification new Puma Titanium X debuts, featuring standard technologies usually reserved for large executive cars. The SUV-inspired compact crossover model delivers removable seat covers, as well as comfort-enhancing lumbar massage seats and wireless charging for compatible smartphones.

It also offers EcoBoost Hybrid mild-hybrid technology for enhanced fuel efficiency and performance – one of a range of electrified powertrain solutions alongside self-charging full-hybrid; plug-in hybrid; and all-electric.

“There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution when it comes to electrification – every customer’s circumstances and travel needs are different,” said Joerg Beyer, executive director, Engineering, Ford of Europe. “Our strategy is to pair the right electrified powertrain option to the right vehicle, helping our customers make their electrified vehicle experience easy and enjoyable.”

Leading the charge

The company also announced details of new pan-European charging solutions that will support electrified vehicle owners and operators with a stress-free experience, helping plug-in hybrid customers to be even more confident of reaching their destinations in comfort. 

We will partner with six energy suppliers in Europe, including Centrica in the U.K. and Ireland, to install home charging wall boxes and provide green energy tariffs that will make charging faster and more affordable for customers. A further initiative in partnership with NewMotion will help drivers locate and pay for charging more easily at more than 118,000 charging points in 30 countries.

A new Go Electric experience also debuts at Frankfurt, helping customers understand how seamlessly they can step into electrified vehicle ownership.

The declared fuel/energy consumptions, CO2 emissions and electric range are measured according to the technical requirements and specifications of the European Regulations (EC) 715/2007 and (EC) 692/2008 as last amended. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are specified for a vehicle variant and not for a single car. The applied standard test procedure enables comparison between different vehicle types and different manufacturers. In addition to the fuel-efficiency of a car, driving behaviour as well as other non-technical factors play a role in determining a car’s fuel/energy consumption, CO2 emissions and electric range. CO2 is the main greenhouse gas responsible for global warming.

Since 1 September 2017, certain new vehicles are being type-approved using the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) according to (EU) 2017/1151 as last amended, which is a new, more realistic test procedure for measuring fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Since 1 September 2018 the WLTP has begun replacing the New European Drive Cycle (NEDC), which is the outgoing test procedure. During NEDC Phase-out, WLTP fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are being correlated back to NEDC. There will be some variance to the previous fuel economy and emissions as some elements of the tests have altered i.e., the same car might have different fuel consumption and CO2
