“Maria de Salinas was lady-in-waiting to Katherine of Aragon, and one of her closest confidantes. Although we know little of her origins, she was the daughter of Juan de Salinas, secretary to Katherine’s eldest sister, Isabella, and Josepha Gonzales de Salas. Despite the fact that she was not on the original list of ladies, drawn up in 1500, chosen to accompany Katherine of Aragon to England for her marriage to Prince Arthur, it seems likely that she, and her sister Inez, did come to England with the Spanish princess. She may have been added to the princess’s staff when her mother, Isabella of Castile, increased the size of Katherine’s entourage in March 1501.
Maria was one of the ladies who stayed with Katherine after her household was reduced and many returned to Spain, following the death of Katherine’s young husband, Arthur, Prince of Wales, in 1502. She stayed with the Spanish princess throughout the years of penury and uncertainty, when Katherine was used as a pawn by both her father, Ferdinand, and father-in-law, Henry VII, in negotiations for her marriage to Prince Henry, the future Henry VIII; a marriage which was one of Henry’s first acts on his accession to the throne. Maria is included in the list of Katherine’s attendants who were given an allowance of black cloth for mantles and kerchiefs, following the death of Henry VII in 1509; she was then given a new gown for Katherine’s coronation, which was held jointly with King Henry in June of the same year.
In 1511 Maria stood as godmother to Mary Brandon, daughter of Charles Brandon – one of the new king, Henry VIII’s closest companions and her future son-in-law – and his first wife, Ann Browne. Katherine of Aragon and Maria were very close; in fact, by 1514 Ambassador Caroz de Villagarut, appointed by Katherine’s father, Ferdinand of Aragon, was complaining of Maria’s influence over the queen. He accused Maria of conspiring with her kinsman, Juan Adursa – a merchant in Flanders with hopes of becoming treasurer to Philip, prince of Castile –  to persuade Katherine not to cooperate with the ambassador. The ambassador complained: ‘The few Spaniards who are still  in her household prefer to be friends of the English, and neglect their duties as subjects of the King of Spain. The worst influence on the queen is exercised by Dona Maria de Salinas, whom she loves more than any other mortal.’¹
Maria was naturalised on 29th May, 1516, and just a week later, on 5th June she married the largest landowner in Lincolnshire, William Willoughby, 11th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. William Willoughby was the son of Sir Christopher Willoughby, who had died c.1498, and Margaret, or Marjery, Jenney of Knodishall in Suffolk. He had been married previously, to Mary Hussey, daughter of Sir William Hussey, Chief Justice of the King’s Bench. The King and Queen paid for the wedding, which took place at Greenwich, the Queen even provided Maria with a dowry of 1100 marks. They were given Grimsthorpe Castle, and other Lincolnshire manors which had formerly belonged to Francis Lovel (friend of Richard III), as a wedding gift. Henry VIII even named one of his new ships the Mary Willoughby in Maria’s honour.
Maria remained at court for some years after her wedding, and attended Katherine at the Field of Cloth of Gold in 1520. Henry VIII was godfather to Maria and William’s oldest son, Henry, who died in infancy. Another son, Francis, also died young and their daughter Katherine, born in 1519, would be the only surviving child of the marriage. Lord Willoughby died in 1526, and for several years afterwards Maria was embroiled in a legal dispute with her brother-in-law, Sir Christopher Willoughby, over the inheritance of the Willoughby lands. Sir Christopher claimed that William had settled some lands on Maria which were entailed to Sir Christopher. The dispute went to the Star Chamber and caused Sir Thomas More, the king’s chancellor and a prominent lawyer, to make an initial redistribution of some of the disputed lands.
This must have been a hard fight for the newly widowed Maria, and the dispute threatened the stability of Lincolnshire itself, given the extensive lands involved. However, Maria attracted a powerful ally in Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk and brother-in-law of the King, who called on the assistance of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Henry’s first minister at the time, in the hope of resolving the situation. Suffolk had managed to obtain the wardship of Katherine Willoughby in 1528, intending her to marry his eldest son and heir Henry, Earl of Lincoln, and so had a vested interest in a favourable settlement for Maria. This interest became even greater following the death of Mary Tudor, Suffolk’s wife, in September 1533, when only three months later the fifty-year-old Duke of Suffolk married fourteen-year-old Katherine, himself.
Although Suffolk pursued the legal case with more vigour after the wedding, a final settlement was not reached until the reign of Elizabeth I. Suffolk eventually became the greatest landowner in Lincolnshire and, despite the age difference, the marriage does appear to have been successful. Katherine served at court, in the household of Henry VIII’s sixth and last queen, Katherine Parr. She was widowed in 1545 and lost her two sons – and heirs – by the Duke, Henry and Charles, to the sweating sickness, within hours of each other in 1551. Katherine was a stalwart of the Protestant learning and even invited Hugh Latimer to preach at Grimsthorpe Castle. It was she and Sir William Cecil who persuaded Katherine Parr to publish her book, The Lamentacion of a Sinner in 1547, demonstrating her continuing links with the court despite her first husband’s death. Following the death of her sons by Suffolk, Katherine no longer had a financial interest in the Suffolk estates, and in order to safeguard her Willoughby estates, Katherine married her gentleman usher, Richard Bertie.
The couple had a difficult time navigating the religious tensions of the age and even went into exile on the Continent during the reign of the Catholic Queen, Mary I, only returning on Elizabeth’s accession. Katherine resumed her position in Tudor society; her relations with the court, however, were strained by her tendency towards Puritan learning. The records of Katherine’s Lincolnshire household show that she employed Miles Coverdale – a prominent critic of the Elizabethan church – as tutor to her two children by Bertie, Susan and Peregrine. Unfortunately, Katherine died after a long illness, on 19th September 1580 and was buried in her native Lincolnshire, in Spilsby Church.
A widow since 1526, Maria de Salinas, Lady Willoughby, kept a tight rein on the Willoughby lands, proving to be an efficient landlady. Unfortunately, the fact she took advantage of the dissolution of the monasteries in order to lease monastic land; a business arrangement, rather than political or religious, but it still made her a target of discontent during the Lincolnshire Rising.
Maria had remained as a Lady-in-Waiting to Katherine. She was known to dislike Anne Boleyn and, as Henry’s attitude towards Katherine hardened during his attempts to divorce her, in 1532 Maria was ordered to leave Katehrine’s household and not contact her again. By 1534, as Emperor Charles V’s ambassador, Chapuys, described it; Katherine was ‘more a prisoner than before, for not only is she deprived of her goods, but even a Spanish lady who has remained with her all her life, and has served her at her own expense, is forbidden to see her.’²
When Katherine was reported to be dying at Kimbolton Castle, in December 1535, Maria applied for a license to visit her ailing mistress. She wrote to  Sir Thomas Cromwell, the King’s chief minister at the time, saying ‘for I heard that my mistress is very sore sick again. I pray you remember me, for you promised to labour with the king to get me licence to go to her before God send for her, as there is no  other likelihood.’² Permission was refused, but despite this setback, Maria set out from London to visit Katherine at Kimbolton Castle, arriving on the evening of New Years’ Day, 1536 and contrived to get herself admitted by Sir Edmund Bedingfield by claiming a fall from her horse meant she could travel no further. According to Sarah Morris and Nathalie Grueninger, Katherine and Maria spent hours talking in their native Castilian; the former queen died in Maria’s arms on 7th January 1536.³ Katherine of Aragon was buried in Peterborough Cathedral on 29th January, with Maria and her daughter, Katherine, in attendance.
Maria herself died in May 1539, keeping control of her estates to the very last. She signed a copy of the court roll around 7th May, but was dead by the 20th, when Suffolk was negotiating for livery of her lands. Her extensive Lincolnshire estates, including Grimsthorpe and Eresby, passed to her only surviving child, Katherine and her husband, Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. Maria’s burial-place is unknown, though there is a legend that she was buried in Peterborough Cathedral, close to her beloved Queen Katherine.”

Maria de Aragão, Queen of Portugal (Wife of King Manuel I of Portugal
Tumblr media
Reign: 30 October 1500 – 7 March 1517
Maria of Aragon (29 June 1482 – 7 March 1517) was a Spanish infanta, and queen consort of Portugal as the second spouse of Portuguese King Manuel I.
Maria was born at Córdoba on 29 June 1482 as the third surviving daughter of Isabel I of Castile
Tumblr media
and Fernando II of Aragon (the Catholic monarchs).
Tumblr media
She was the fourth of their five surviving children, and had a stillborn twin sister (though some other sources claim that the queen was pregnant with fraternal twins, and the stillborn baby was a boy). Like her sisters, she was given a thorough education, not only in household tasks but also in arithmetic, Latin, several other languages, history, philosophy and the classics.
As an infanta of Spain, her hand in marriage was important in European politics. Before her marriage to Manuel I of Portugal, her parents entertained the idea of marrying her to King James IV of Scotland.
Tumblr media
This was at a time when her younger sister Catherine's marriage to Arthur, Prince of Wales, was being planned.
Tumblr media
Fernando and Isabel thought if Maria was Queen of Scotland, the two sisters could keep the peace between their husbands. These plans, however, came to nothing. Her eldest sister Isabel, Princess of Asturias, was the first wife of Manuel I, but her death in 1498 created a necessity for Manuel to remarry; Maria became the next bride of the Portuguese king, reaffirming dynastic links with Spanish royal houses.
Manuel and Maria were married in Alcácer do Sal on 30 October 1500, and was granted Viseu and Torres Vedras as her dower. She had 10 children, eight of whom reached adulthood, including King João III of Portugal, Holy Roman Empress Isabel, and Beatriz, Duchess of Savoy.
Queen Maria was described as pale and thin to her exterior, with a retiring chin, and had a very serious character to her personality. Despite the fact that she was queen during a famous time period in Portuguese history, when the Portuguese court was one of the richest in Europe, she did not play any significant part as an individual. Serious and pious, she devoted her time to sewing, pious devotion and supervising the education of her children in accordance with the principles of her parents. She maintained a close correspondence with her parents, got along well with her sister-in-law Isabel and the queen dowager Beatriz, and hosted a large court with both Spanish and Portuguese ladies-in-waiting. King Manuel appreciated her pious nature, treated her with respect and awarded her with expensive clothes and jewelry during her pregnancies.
Queen Maria was not described as politically active, though chronicles praised her for occasionally persuading her husband to an act of mercy. She was, however, somewhat involved in religious politics. She supported King Manuel's religious-imperial project, including the plan to conquer the Mamluk's realm, destroy Mecca and Medina and reconquer Christian holy places such as Jerusalem. She co-founded the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon.
During her life in Portugal, Maria was almost continually pregnant. Normally, she had but a few months pause between a delivery and her next pregnancy. This state of affairs resulted in an continual deterioration of her health and after the delivery of 1516, she was reportedly exhausted to a point that she was also temporarily mentally confused before she recuperated. She died in Lisbon on 7 March 1517, and was buried at the Jerónimos Monastery of Belém.
Tumblr media
She died as a result of her last pregnancy.
In 1580, the dynastic links from the marriage led to a succession crisis in Portugal that made her grandson Philip II of Spain king of Portugal as Philip I of Portugal.
Tumblr media
Her marriage with Manuel produced the following children:
João, Prince of Portugal (7 June 1502 - 11 June 1557), 55 years - Succeeded the throne as João III, King of Portugal.
Infanta Isabel (24 October 1503 - 1 May 1539), 35 years - Holy Roman Empress by marriage to Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.
Infanta Beatriz (31 December 1504 - 8 January 1538), 33 years - Duchess of Savoy by marriage to Charles III, Duke of Savoy.
Infante Luís (3 March 1506 - 27 November 1555), 49 years - Duke of Beja. Unmarried but had illegitimate descendants, one of them being António, Prior of Crato, a claimant of the throne of Portugal in 1580; see: Portuguese succession crisis of 1580.
Infante Fernando (5 June 1507 - 7 November 1534), 27 years - Duke of Guarda. Married Guiomar Coutinho, 5th Countess of Marialva and 3rd Countess of Loulé (died 1534). No surviving issue.
Infante Afonso (23 April 1509 - 21 April 1540) 30 years - Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church
Infante Henrique (31 January 1512 - 31 January 1580), 68 years - Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who succeeded his grandnephew, King Sebastião (Manuel I's great-grandson), as Cardinal Henrique, King of Portugal. His death triggered the Portuguese succession crisis of 1580.
Infanta Maria (3 February 1513) Died immediately after birth.
Infante Duarte (7 October 1515 - 20 September 1540), 24 years - Duke of Guimarães and great-grandfather of João IV of Portugal. Married Isabel of Bragança, daughter of Jaime, Duke of Bragança.
Infante António (9 September 1516) - Died immediately after birth.

Children of Henry VIII and His Two Wives AU
Lady Mary Tudor — born 18 February 1516; the only child of Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, to survive to adulthood. Upon her father’s remarriage she was stripped of her title as Princess and declared a bastard. Mary never married nor had any children. Upon the death of her father in 1547 she joined a nunnery where she spent the rest of her days. She died on 17 November 1558.
Princess Elizabeth Tudor (later Elizabeth Dudley, Countess of Leicester) — born 7 September 1533; the eldest child of Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. At the age of 4, she was betrothed to Frederick II of Denmark, however when she was 15 she met and fell in love with Robert Dudley. She begged her mother to allow her to marry Dudley. Queen Anne was reluctant at first, knowing this could cause tension with Denmark, however, after seeing how happy Dudley made her daughter, she finally agreed. Elizabeth and Robert were married on 4 June 1550 and had 13 children (10 of whom survived to adulthood)—Henry, John (died of a fever at age 9), Anne, Jane, Robert, Elizabeth and Eleanor (twins; Elizabeth died six days after birth), Thomas, George, Mary, Edmund (stillborn), Katherine, and Charles. Her beloved husband died on 4 September 1588. She never remarried and died on 24 March 1603, survived by her ten children.
Prince Edward Tudor (later King Edward VI) — born 9 November 1534; the second child and firstborn son of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. His father’s son in every way, not only did Edward share many physical characteristics with his father (most notably his red hair and tall stature [Edward stood at 6ft 3in in adulthood]), but he also shared his father’s charm and charisma, and his love of sport and hunting. However, Edward could also be short-tempered and arrogant. He ascended to the throne upon his father’s death in 1547 at the age of 12. His grandfather, Thomas Boleyn, served as his Lord Protector until he came of age. Edward and Queen Mary of Scotland (who had been betrothed since Mary’s infancy) were married by proxy on 24 April 1553 and then again in person on 8 December 1553 (Mary’s 11th birthday). The couple did not consummate their marriage for 7 years, but when they did, Mary got pregnant almost immediately. On 25 October 1560, Mary gave birth to a son, Prince Henry. Three years later, Mary gave birth to a daughter, Princess Catherine, on 17 September 1563. Mary gave birth to her third and final child, Prince James, on 19 June 1566. Queen Mary died on 8 February 1587 after tragically falling off her horse. After Mary’s death, Edward inherited sole rule of Scotland. King Edward VI of England and I of Scotland died just four months after his older sister on 6 July 1603. He was succeeded by his son James (as his son, Henry, had died seven years earlier of consumption). James I of England and VI of Scotland finally united the two kingdoms under one ruler.
Prince Arthur Tudor, Duke of York — born 29 January 1536; the third child and second son of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Teased by his elder brother for being a “mama’s boy”, Arthur was a surprisingly sensitive soul, not unlike his namesake, his late uncle. He was very close to his mother who he shared many characteristics with (such as his dark hair and shorter stature [Arthur was only 5ft 9in at his tallest]). He also shared his mother’s love of learning and music. Arthur was an accomplished poet and spoke 6 languages fluently. He was also a devout Protestant and considered joining the church as a child. He never did, but he still devoted his life to promoting Reformist education. Arthur was betrothed to Lady Jane Grey in 1554 and the two married on 25 May 1556. They had four daughters: Frances, Isabel, Alice, and Grace. Frances, Isabel, and Alice survived to adulthood, but Grace died just hours after birth. Lady Jane passed away on 12 February 1604. Arthur lived twelve more years after his wife’s death, dying on 18 March 1616.
Princess Margaret “Maggie” Tudor (later Queen Margaret of Denmark) — born 12 October 1537; the youngest child and second daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Maggie was very similar to her brother, Arthur, to whom she shared a special bond (just as Elizabeth and Edward shared their own special bond). Maggie loved music and dancing more than almost anything else. She was known to always be bubbly and happy. She thoroughly enjoyed composing and even set some of her brother Arthur’s poems to music. After her sister broke her betrothal to Frederick II to marry Robert Dudley, Maggie was betrothed to Frederick in her place. Maggie and Frederick married on 20 July 1552 and had 7 children (all of whom survived infancy, however, their youngest son died at 19 of illness). Their children were: Elizabeth, Anne, Christian, Henry, Augusta, Hedwig, and John. Frederick died on 4 April 1588 and was succeeded by his and Maggie’s oldest son, Christian. Maggie stayed in Denmark as the Queen Mother until her death on 3 July 1612.

1918 06 09 RE8 forces to land a Halberstadt CLII - Steve Anderson
The incident depicted in actually quite famous; the RE8 was from No. 3 Sqdn Australian Flying Corps. The Aussies of that squadron flew their RE8's very aggressively (more like Bristol Fighters), and this wasn't the only victory they claimed. They liked flying the RE8. On 9 June 1918, the crew of Lts. R C Armstrong and F J Mart of No 3 Sqdn had noticed the Halberstadt headed for home, and Armstrong headed it off "spoiling for a fight." The German crew were "lost and inexperienced," (according to Aussie sources) and showed little inclination to resist. They allowed themselves to be herded back in a westerly direction towards the Aussie's airfield at Flesselles, followed by the RE8 100 yards behind them. The Halberstadt landed at the No. 3 Sqdn airfield, soon followed by Armstrong and Mart. Some sources have the CL.II landing at Villers Bocage. The Halberstadt was CL.II 1534/17, and it came from Schlasta 13. The crew consisted of Gefreiter Kuesler and Vzfw. Müllenbach. The CL.II was given the captured a/c number G/5Bde/16, and detailed technical reports were made of it, and numerous photos taken. Its colors and markings were recorded in the reports, thus it has always been a popular subject for modelers. It was handed over to the Australian government as a war trophy. Unfortunately, unlike Clauss' Albatros D.Va of Jasta 29 and a Pfalz D.XII, for some reason it did not survive to be displayed today in the Australian War memorial.

LA Restaurants With Outdoor Seating And Patios (1) added to Google Docs
LA Restaurants With Outdoor Seating And Patios (1)
On May 29, LA restaurants were given the OK to re-open for dine-in service - and a lot of guidelines to follow when they did. (You can learn more about those guidelines here.) Somewhat understandably, there’s been a bit of confusion about the whole situation - though one thing Infatuation readers don’t seem confused about is their desire to eat outside whenever they do head back to their favorite restaurants.
So we made this guide.
We’ll continue to update it as spots re-open around the city, and there’s a patio you think needs to be included, email us at [email protected]. Still don’t feel ready to return to a restaurant? For our full guide to the city’s takeout and delivery options, check out the Ultimate Los Angeles Delivery & Takeout Guide.
THE SPOTS  A.O.C. $ $ $ $ American ,  French  in  Beverly Grove $$$$ 8700 W 3rd St 7.8 /10
This upscale French restaurant in Beverly Grove has one of LA’s most iconic patios, so our guess is you won’t be the only one excited about their return. The Spanish fried chicken is the most famous dish on the menu and is still a must-order, but everybody’s really here to drink a lot of wine and pretend they’re someone deep in Provence.
 Alta Adams $ $ $ $ Southern  in  West Adams $$$$ 5359 West Adams Blvd 8.5 /10
West Adams’ excellent Southern spot Alta has a huge back patio that’s tucked back from the busy street into a quiet residential neighborhood. They’re only open from 11am-6pm at the moment, but fortunately, they offer some of our favorite dinner items in the daytime: Pimento dip, black-eyed pea fritters, and perfectly crispy fried chicken.
 Alcove Cafe & Bakery $ $ $ $ American ,  Cafe/Bakery  in  Los Feliz $$$$ 1929 Hillhurst Ave. 7.7 /10
Both the dining room and patio at this Los Feliz restaurant are open. Located in two converted houses on Hillhurst, this is one of the best outdoor spaces out there — perfect for penning the next King Lear, or sweating through every fiber of your clothes. Plus, they have a really good eggs Benedict.
 Angelini Alimentari $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Cafe/Bakery ,  Dessert  in  Beverly Grove $$$$ 7317 Beverly Boulevard 7.8 /10
Fairfax’s local Italian cafe, Angelini Alimentari, reopens their courtyard patio on June 12. Our order is always the prosciutto panini and some chocolate gelato, but they’ve got all kinds of sandwiches, salads, and pastas available. Next door, they’re also re-opening the more formal Angelini Osteria.
 Bacari W. 3rd $ $ $ $ Wine Bar  in  West Hollywood $$$$ 8030 W 3rd St Not
Rated
Yet
Bacari has an excellent outdoor dining room, covered with massive trees and hanging lamps. It’s tucked far enough back from busy West 3rd St. that it doubles as an impressive oasis, and the wine list - impressively large and just as full of affordable options - only helps. The menu of Mediterranean-ish small plates compliments both the surroundings and the wine very well.
 Barrique $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Venice $$$$ 796 Main Street 8.0 /10
The patio at Barrique feels like the backyard of the Venice bungalow you’ll probably never be able to afford. The candles, low light, and extensive Italian wine list make this a great place for your first date night in months (especially with the added privacy of socially distanced tables). Share some housemade pastas, like beef ravioli or Dungeness crab spaghetti, and some smoked duck, and you’ll walk out happy.
Big Dean's Ocean Front Cafe $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Bar  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 1615 Ocean Front Walk
The classic Santa Monica hangout - located steps from the beach and basically, like, kinda behind the Pier? - reopens both their front and back patios on June 11, with the usual precautions in place (face masks required, no more than six per table, etc). You also have to order food, a rather clever way to skirt the state’s “bars must remain closed” mandate, though you would’ve anyway - Big Dean’s double cheeseburger is one of the best in the city.
 Ddong Ggo $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 528 S Western Ave 7.8 /10
If you’re looking to cut loose, drink a dozen beers, rip a few cigs, and power through a seafood pancake or six, then Ddong Ggo is your spot. This no-frills Ktown party pavilion is open for business, and even though the patio can (and will) get smoky, if that’s your kind of scene, then this is exactly what you’ve been dreaming of after 475 days in quarantine.
Double Zero $ $ $ $ Pizza ,  Vegetarian ,  Vegan  in  Venice $$$$ 1700 Lincoln Blvd Not

Vegan specialist Double Zero serves largely gluten-free, nut-free, plant-based pizzas on their excellent patio in Venice. Our favorites are the pepperoni (with Calabrian chili, macadamia ricotta, and agave) and pesto pie with zucchini and arugula. We highly recommend finishing it all off with some olive oil cake, too.
 Electric Owl $ $ $ $ American  in  Hollywood ,  West Hollywood $$$$ 1451 N Gardner St. 7.8 /10
After a long hiatus, this train station-themed bar in Weho is back for dine-in and takeout service. And the best part? They’ve made their 4/20 Happy Hour menu available all-day long. Which means you no longer have to wait for the late afternoon to get discounted prices on smashburgers, French bread pizza, and mimosas. Or to get high, for that matter.
 E.P. & L.P. $$$$ 603 N LA Cienega Blvd
The rooftop at Weho spot EP & LP is back open with plexiglass barriers, cashless transactions, and “sanitation hosts” (which are not, contrary to what we thought, Westworld characters). They also have an all-new menu, a Southeast Asian-inspired selection of small plates that are all $8-$15, like three-pepper squid, fried crab curry, and twice-cooked BBQ pork belly.
Formosa Cafe $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Chinese ,  Bar  in  West Hollywood $$$$ 7156 Santa Monica Blvd. Not

Formosa Cafe, the recently-revived Old Hollywood haunt in Weho, has re-opened for excellent cocktails and dim sum from the same chef as Little Fatty. Get some chile wontons and XO Fatty (chow fun) to go with whatever tropical cocktails you’re chugging. Their upstairs outdoor space is small, so we highly recommend making a reservation through their website.
 Fia $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 2454 Wilshire Blvd Not

They took over the old Wilshire spot in Santa Monica last year, and remain one of the city’s best-kept secrets, thanks in no small part to their fantastic, tree-filled back patio. Now’s your chance to see it for yourself. While the Coastal Mediterranean menu’s not the most inventive (plenty of burrata, handmade pastas, and a raw bar), Fia makes the kind of crowd-pleasing food that absolutely anyone will enjoy. And, again, the patio …
 Holly Liss Guisados $ $ $ $ Tacos  in  Echo Park $$$$ 1261 W. Sunset Blvd. 7.6 /10
Guisados has re-opened almost all of their locations, including the Echo Park outpost, with its back patio in the hills of Chavez Ravine. All the tacos are $3.50 or less, so you can really go crazy here and try a bunch of different stuff. Our favorites are the chicharrón - pork skin simmered in salsa verde - and the super-spicy chiles toreados, with four kinds of hot peppers.
Home Restaurant $ $ $ $ American  in  Los Feliz $$$$ 1760 Hillhurst Ave 6.4 /10
In a neighborhood that knows good patios (Los Feliz), Home is one of our favorites. The leafy space on Hillhurst doesn’t exactly feel like a home, but it is a great place to hang with a few friends and burn an entire Thursday afternoon drinking mimosas and people-watching.
 Idle Hour Bar $ $ $ $ North Hollywood $$$$ 4824 Vineland Ave
One of our favorite bars in The Valley is back open, although, according to their Instagram, “space is extremely limited.” Make sure to email [email protected] for a table before you head over. Social-distancing rules remain in effect, though it’s not clear if you have to remain six feet away from the giant bulldog statue on the patio.
Inn of the Seventh Ray $ $ $ $ American  in  Malibu $$$$ 128 Old Topanga Canyon Rd Not
Rated
Yet
Buried deep in the Malibu mountains at Topanga State Park is Inn Of The Seventh Ray, which has reopened for all-day dining. The leafy patio is an extremely pleasant place to spend a Saturday afternoon, especially with a cheese plate, some crispy shrimp cakes, and a glass of wine. Or three.
 L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele $ $ $ $ Pizza  in  Hollywood $$$$ 1534 N McCadden Pl 6.3 /10
Hollywood pizza spot L’Antica re-opened their big patio in early June, with limited seating. If you’re headed there, we recommend sticking to the pizzas - our favorites are the Bianca and the Margherita. The original location in Naples is the pizza spot in Eat Pray Love, which are three things you’re probably trying to do a lot of right now.
 La Cabaña Restaurant $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Venice $$$$ 738 Rose Ave 7.9 /10
In a town full of rowdy Mexican restaurants, La Cabaña is among the most fun, even if there are fewer tables available on their excellent courtyard patio. The margaritas are a must-order, and make sure you get some chiles rellenos to go along with them. The restaurant is using disposable cutlery and menus, and they’re enforcing strict social distancing - no word on whether that includes their iconic mariachi band.
 Lowboy $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Bar  in  Echo Park $$$$ 1534 Sunset Blvd
One of our favorite bars in Echo Park has been doing limited seatings for more than a week now, but if you’re a little nervous about grabbing a burger and a beer inside, fear not: They’ve also got a small enclosed patio on the sidewalk, and they’re cocktails are just as delicious (and deadly strong) outside.
 Malibu Farm $ $ $ $ American ,  Scandinavian  in  Malibu $$$$ 23000 Pacific Coast Hwy 7.2 /10
Home to one of the best views in LA, Malibu Farm has reopened their restaurant - or at least the patio portion of it - on the Malibu Pier, if you want to stop in for a brunch cocktail and those excellent berry-topped pancakes after a trip up PCH. Malibu Cafe (their sibling restaurant at the end of the Pier) is still closed.
 Playa Provisions $ $ $ $ American  in  Playa Del Rey $$$$ 119 Culver Blvd 7.3 /10
Playa Provisions, the sprawling spot by the beach in Playa del Rey, has a couple small patios for you to socially distance on, and they’ve just turned their parking lot into an even bigger space for dining. We go straight for the patty melt when we’re here - it’s made with dry-aged beef and some really tremendous BBQ sauce. Their cocktails are good, too, and if you’re into whiskey, they’ve got one of the best selections in town.
 Roberta’s $ $ $ $ Pizza ,  Italian  in  Culver City $$$$ 8850 Washington Blvd 7.6 /10
This Brooklyn transplant actually reopened before their East Coast cousins, though they’re currently only accepting reservations for patio seating. That patio, however, is pretty nice - it spreads through the courtyard of Culver City’s Platform complex - and Roberta’s roster of pizzas (including the sweet-and-spicy Bee Sting and their savory, mega-cheesy Famous Original) is deep. They’ll also be debuting several new menu items as they ramp up to full dine-in service.
Rooftop By JG $$$$ 9850 Wilshire Blvd
Unless you count that time in April when you tried to scare a raccoon away from your chimney, you probably haven’t spent much time on rooftops lately. If you want to change that, The Rooftop By JG is back open at the Waldorf Astoria. Focus on the cocktails - we like the ginger margarita - which are ideal for drinking next to a pool and pretending the world isn’t on fire.
Sausal $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  El Segundo $$$$ 219 Main St 6.8 /10
Sausal is a modern Mexican spot in El Segundo with a front patio that’s great for kicking back, drinking a few margaritas, and snacking on some tacos. Food can get a bit pricey here, so we’re hoping their excellent Happy Hour returns as well.
Solidarity $ $ $ $ Eastern European  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 1414 Lincoln Blvd Not
Rated
Yet
Santa Monica Polish spot Solidarity has a secret back patio that’s a great place to eat pierogies and drink a few too many Warsaw Mules (made with Zubrowka). If you’re looking for something a bit bigger, the golabki (stuffed cabbage, beef, and jasmine rice) is one of our go-tos, but with comfort classics like schnitzel, stroganoff, and handmade gnocchi in mushroom cream sauce on the menu, you can’t go wrong.
 Yamashiro Hollywood $ $ $ $ Japanese  in  Hollywood $$$$ 1999 N Sycamore Ave 6.7 /10
Yamashiro, the massive Japanese restaurant in the Hollywood Hills, feels as much like a public garden as it does a restaurant, with their meticulously manicured courtyard patio. They’re re-opening on June 19, and should be able to take care of your sake and spicy albacore-related needs.
 Zinque $ $ $ $ American ,  French  in  West Hollywood $$$$ 8684 Melrose Ave 6.1 /10
Zinque has several locations around town and they’re all open. That means the days of drinking too much rosé on their patio, snacking on tartines and their famous “Le Bowl,” and stumbling home on a Saturday night have returned. Hooray.
