LOCATION: Napa Valley, California

The sun was bright as the elusive trio strutted up the steps of the most luxurious chateau in all of Napa Valley. Emmy pouted her lips as she checked her makeup in a small compact mirror before swiftly clicking it shut and slipping it into her clutch. Her hair swayed in the warm breeze, flowing behind her as the soft burgundy material of her sarong fluttered. She wore a matching top to the simple floral pattern of her skirt, enjoying the satin caresses on her skin along the trim of her attire. 

“You made our reservation, right?” Emmy glanced to her left, eyeing their more intellectual counterpart wearing a vibrant dress with colorful abstract stripes. 

Jade peeled her gaze from the large estate, her mouth slightly a gap from the details in the architecture as she met the stares of the other women of her group. “Yeah, I put it under Ruby’s information.”

Ruby outwardly grumbled as she stomped up the last series of steps leading to the entrance of the vineyard. “Why didn’t you use your name?” Her ringlets bounced as she reached the last step, turning on her heels while placing her hands on her hips covered in a white and rust-colored ruffle dress. 

“I’m keeping the guide busy while Emmy sneaks away to steal the bottle.” Jade reminded them since in other situations, Ruby would have been the one to seek the valuable and retrieve it. 

Ruby looked back at the building, her imagination painting vivid images of the delicious content hidden just behind the stucco. “And Emmy is getting the wine because…?”

Emmy looked toward Jade, wondering why she insisted their usual roles were rearranged. Normally, she would have been distracting the tour guide while Ruby slipped away, leaving Jade to make sure everything went according to plan and improvise any necessary adjustments in their favor.

“Because the only knowledge either of you has about wine is drinking it and Emmy is short enough to leave unnoticed.”

“Hey!” Emmy protested. “I’m not that short.” She huffed crossing her arms over her chest, narrowing her eyes at Jade. “Plus, you don’t need knowledge to distract a man. You need these.” She gestured to her breasts, smirking proudly when she caught the subtle cleavage peeking out from her blouse. 

“And what if the guide is a woman?” Jade challenged, digging through her clutch before pulling out a folded piece of paper. “You’ll need this, it’s the map.”

Ruby and Emmy were surprised as the face of their operation unfolded the small map, flickering over the layout of the chateau. “How did you get this?” Ruby was leaning over Emmy’s shoulder looking at the 2D visual. 

“I’ve got my ways. I was just able to get them last night.” Jade grinned proudly before realizing they were wasting time discussing the plans of their mission. “Come on, we can’t miss our time slot.” She stepped around her friends, peering back at them to make sure they followed suit, and stashed the map away from prying eyes. 

Emmy quickly tucked the paper away in her clutch, clicking her heels against the smooth stone pavement as she caught up with the technical genius of their group. Ruby sighed, rolling her eyes before joining them as she anticipated the soul-sucking torture of touring the grounds without being able to sneak away and steal a bottle for her own enjoyment. 

Jade reached the decorated doors of the chateau and pulled them open allowing Emmy and Ruby to step in first. Emmy skimmed the rich ambiance of the lobby, spotting a check-in desk for the tours with a cluster of individuals off to the side near the main hallway of the rest of the house. Her sparkling irises drank in a sharply dressed man standing amongst the group. Her journey down the solid, crisp white shirt over his sculpted shoulders moved to his waist hidden by the loose button-up tucked into the black trousers that accentuated the shape of his toned thighs and ass. 

“Oh shit,” Ruby whispered under her breath, catching the attention of her two companions. “They’re here.”

Emmy furrowed her brow, sneaking a quick glance toward Ruby and following her gaze back to the group of patrons waiting in the lobby. She quickly felt the blood drain from her face as the man she was previously checking out turned ever so slightly and peeked over his shoulder back at them. Her nails dug into the clutch tucked between her arm and frame as the familiar smug grin of Jungkook flashed back at her. 

Jade felt her shoulders become tense as she made eye contact with Taehyung and Jimin, the two men who compromised her and stole from her in the same manner Emmy would steal from others. “We can’t let them get that bottle.” She declared, sharpening her stare in the direction of the soft features of Jimin, ignoring how good he looked in the textured black suit with solid black pants. 

Ruby hardened her expression, letting the moment of surprise disappear without a trace as she cleared her throat. “I guess I’ll check us in.” She announced before confidently walking to the desk, flicking her stare toward the three men as if she were unbothered by their presence. 

Emmy and Jade moved further into the lobby, stepping toward the huddled group since they seemed to be part of the tour. Emmy had her lips pressed tightly together, agitation festering in her stomach as they drew closer to the offending existence of Jungkook. She was vividly reminded of their time on the flight to Tokyo until she passed out from the combination of exhaustion and alcohol running through her system. Her cheeks became inflamed as she remembered Jungkook had kept her distracted from helping Jade retrieve the program that Jimin stole in the end. She refused to let them stand in her way again and certainly wouldn’t give Jungkook the time of day. 

Jade peered over at the men, her stare fixated on Taehyung as he played with a toothpick between his lips, twisting the thin stick with his teeth as he grinned in her direction. She snapped her gaze away, feeling a similar pit in her stomach when she realized he took advantage of her naivety back in Las Vegas. She turned so that her back was facing them, hoping to block them out and keep her mood from reflecting the frustration she felt towards them being there. “Just ignore them, they’re only going to make a fool of themselves when we find the bottle first.”

Emmy clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth, adjusting her stance as she cocked her hip. “You’re right, and even if they find it first, it won’t be difficult to throw them off their game.” She flicked her hair from her shoulder, fixing the material of her blouse and bringing the neckline down to show off her assets a little more. 

Jade rolled her eyes, chuckling under her breath at her friend’s default method of winning, especially against the male population. She was startled as a strong hand slid across her back, curling over her shoulder as the handsome features of Jungkook blocked her view of Emmy. “Well, isn’t this a lovely surprise…” His other arm was wrapped around Emmy, pulling her in close as his hand gripped their arm firmly. “My favorite little trio.”

Emmy scoffed as she slapped his arm from around her, crossing her arms over her chest. “Are you guys stalking us?” She hissed, narrowing her eyes at him as Taehyung and Jimin joined him. 

Taehyung had his hands shoved in the pockets of his copper trousers that matched perfectly with his suit jacket. He tilted his head with amusement shining behind his stupid smile. “I’m pretty sure we got here first, sweetheart.” His thumb came up to swipe against his bottom lip as he kept his smirk at bay. “I guess you just couldn’t get enough of us, huh?” He chuckled under his breath despite himself, entertained by the fire that sparked from both women. 

Jungkook clicked his lip piercing against his teeth as he bit his lip while the corners of his mouth betrayed him when they curled into his cheeks. “Maybe we can find another lavatory to sneak off to.” 

“What?”

“Fuck you.” Jade and Emmy spoke over each other, one clearly confused about what Jungkook meant by that comment, and the other pissed that he was referring to that secret moment of weakness in front of their comrades. 

The men seemed smug from Emmy’s response as Jungkook stepped forward, getting into her personal space. “I already did, baby girl, but don’t worry, I’m always willing to do it again.” 

Jade’s brows furrowed together as she placed the context of his innuendo and realized what he was insinuating from the smug demeanor of himself and his partners to the frigid attitude of Emmy. She quickly stepped in, pulling her friend away from the three idiots. “Well, we need to go…anywhere else. Excuse us.” She linked her arm with Emmy’s and swiftly left the men to their own devices as she sought out Ruby until they were forced to endure a tour alongside the additional obstacles in the way of their goal. “So let me get this straight…while I got screwed over back in Tokyo, you were literally getting screwed?” 

Emmy glared at Jade as they gathered back up with Ruby who heard the tail end of the question. Her brows lifted on her forehead as her wide eyes flicked between the two. “Ugh, I don’t want to talk about it.” Emmy groaned, shooting a glare over her shoulder, hoping the daggers she threw at Jungkook would cause him even an ounce of pain. 

“I definitely missed something...” Ruby mentioned, looking toward Jade for some enlightenment on the situation, but only receiving a silent gesture that communicated she would be filled in later.

The tour of the vineyard commenced with the group promenading through the halls of the extravagant chateau, beautifully illuminated by the large glass windows overlooking a courtyard filled with neatly arranged grapevines. The feminine trio fell back as the tour guide passionately described their daily operations, informing guests of the wine-making process. Emmy drank up the sight of their guide, his undeniably built frame accentuated in the crisp white button-up that hugged his muscular frame deliciously. He had a quality apron protecting his clothing as he brought the tour group to a pause right in a beautifully decorated room dripping in modern elegance. 

Emmy smiled in his direction as he glanced over the guests he was responsible for, pushing her chest out as she entertained the man in the only way she knew how. Ruby placed a gentle hand on her shoulder as Jade walked away from them, utilizing the small break to seek out the handsome vintner. 

“This should be interesting.” Ruby grinned in amusement, watching as Jade’s dress swayed with each step as she radiated a confidence the girls usually never associated with their technology-savvy partner in crime.  Emmy narrowed her eyes, watching as wine was poured for sampling, a selection of grapes and cheeses available as accompaniments to the rich alcoholic beverage. 

Emmy quickly snatched up two of the small glass offerings, twisting to face Ruby as she passed one of them off. “It’s free, might as well indulge.” A smirk crawled over Ruby’s features as she brought the glass up to clink against Emmy’s, nodding her head in agreement. 

“Don’t mind if I do.” The two girls took a sizeable gulp of the dark red wine, savoring the sweet sting of the nectar as Ruby eyed an employee walking around with a tray of various cheeses. It only took one glance at each other before they chased after the tray to feed their appetites. 

Meanwhile, Jade managed to make her way toward the tour guide, noticing his name distinctly displayed against the material of his nametag. He was clearly a very athletic man, his love of wine matched perfectly with his fitness goals, creating a very alluring and attractive man. Distracting him should be easy, especially given her extensive knowledge of wines and vineyards.

Once Changbin was clear of guests, Jade swiftly moved to stand beside him, flashing him her most beguiling smile. Changbin’s eyes clearly raked over her figure as he took in the sight of the dainty lady standing elegantly before him. Before he can ask her about her experience so far, Jade mimicked Emmy’s typical actions, tossing her hair back over her shoulder as she offered him a sweet smile.

“It’s Changbin, right?” Jade inquired as she bat her eyelashes, watching happily as Changbin drank her in like a tall glass of wine, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. 

He politely nodded before turning toward one of the bartops, selecting a small glass of red wine, and holding it out as an offering. “That would be me. May I interest you in a sample of our boldest selection of red wine?” Jade accepted the drink, swirling the liquid seductively before lifting the glass to her lips to steal a taste of the bold flavor. 

Jade gulped back the strong taste as she puckered her lips, enjoying the flavor as Changbin watched intently. “What do you think?” Jade smiled as she looked down at the glass, swirling the liquid once more to observe it carefully. 

“Must be a younger wine given its bitterness. ” She commented softly, watching as Changbin’s eyes widen in wonder. “I bet that has enough tannins to cause headaches.” She giggled. 

Changbin’s expression changed subtly, his curiosity replaced with a good first impression of the female as Jade handed him back the glass. “You must know a thing or two about wine.” He smiled warmly as they continued their discussion, getting interrupted by a few tour guests with simple questions about the winery and their red wine samplings.

Emmy and Ruby stood just beyond the threshold of the large glass windows, taking the opportunity to step out on the terrace to enjoy the large fountains on the property. Ruby was currently savoring a small plate of expensive cheeses as she enjoyed her third sample of wine, smiling brightly at the sight of Jade mingling through the windows on the inside. 

“Looks like our little mouse is doing well after all,” Ruby remarked as Emmy turned her gaze back onto the oldest of the trio. Emmy quickly noticed the manner in which Changbin was engaging in conversation with Jade while equally addressing other guests. 

Emmy glanced around, analyzing her opportunity to sneak off before realizing that this particular location had far too many workers circulating the area. She would clearly be seen if she took her leave, sighing as she brought her wine back up to her lips for another taste. “Let's just hope she can keep it up.” 

As the group concluded their time in the large ballroom, Emmy placed her glass against one of the tabletops, following as the various guests crowded together to follow Changbin’s lead down toward the cellars. 

Emmy assessed the surroundings, her eyes suddenly finding a glimpse of silver metal reflecting from her side. She was annoyed to find Jungkook’s piercing pulling her attention as he leaned against the wall, patiently awaiting the remainder of the tour. He made eye contact with the youngest female hustler, the corners of his lips pulling into a smirk as he nodded his head to the side. Emmy’s features scrunched together as she followed the direction in which he gestured, noticing a sign for the restrooms posted not too far from his location. 

A huff of annoyance slipped between her lips as she quickly turned her attention away from him, leaving Jungkook chuckling mischievously as he pushed off the wall to join Jimin and Taehyung. The tour group proceeded down the lavish halls, descending beneath the property to visit the cellars and basements. 

The clean modern decor from upstairs soon faded into stone walls and polished wooden floors, resembling an elegant rustic lodge as they venture down the corridors toward one of the cellars with oak barrels allowing the wine to age to perfection. 

Changbin began to explain the aging process to the group, allowing Emmy to scan their surroundings. Before she could find a space to sneak off to, she felt an arm wrap around her shoulders as Taehyung leaned in between herself and Ruby, smiling smugly. “Enjoying yourself, ladies?” 

Ruby rolled her eyes dramatically as she scoffed at his touch, shimming his arm off from around her as she sent a piercing glare in his direction. “Not with you breathing all over me.” 

Jungkook walked up from behind Taehyung, chuckling at her reaction as he turned his attention to Emmy. “How about you, baby girl?” The manner in which he said his pet name for her was flirtatious and suggestive, causing her to narrow her eyes in annoyance. “Enjoying that buzz from the wine?” 

His eyes shimmered at the memory of them on the plane, indulging in glasses of alcohol before getting a much-needed taste of each other. Emmy simply offered him a sarcastic smile until her attention was pulled by a cheesy laugh echoing through the corridors. Her eyes flashed toward Jade who is hunched over, laughing hysterically at something that happened ahead of them. “Oh Changbin, great minds really do drink alike.” 

Emmy internally cringed as she processed Jade’s pun, watching her helplessly try to imitate some basic flirting techniques to no avail. Ruby practically slapped her palm against her forehead, feeling the embarrassment seep in as they listened to Jade’s subpar flirting abilities. “I knew it.” Emmy groaned under her breath, knowing it was only a matter of time before Jade fell back into her quirkiness.

Taehyung chuckled loudly between the girls, his eyes latched onto Jade as she tried to pull Changbin’s attention, who was now clearly focused on conversing with other guests. “Yikes.” Taehyung winced, slapping his hand against Jungkook’s back as his eyes shimmered in mischief. “No wonder they let that one do all the flirting.” He gestured toward Emmy with his head before looking over to Jimin who was standing not too far from their current location. 

Emmy simply offered them a glare of vexation before pulling Ruby away from them, noticing that they have more glasses set out for another round of samples. Hopefully, this would lead to another round of socializing, allowing her the perfect opportunity to slip away to retrieve their real target. One of the cellars contained a selection of rare, expensive wines; one of them being a Romanee-Conti 1945 valued over five hundred thousand dollars. 

Jungkook pushed his lip piercing between his teeth, flicking it in amusement as Changbin began offering a sample of one of their dry white wines. Jade giggled endearingly as she tried to keep luring Changbin’s attention, clearly oblivious to her efforts given his need to attend to other guests. “Another glass? Wine not?” Jade offered cutely, leaving Jungkook and Taehyung to laugh once again. 

“Pathetic.” Jungkook chuckled.  Jimin stood beside him innocently as he watched Jade whip out pun after pun of clever wine jokes. While his teammates found her attempts embarrassing and pathetic, he found Jade quite endearing. Jimin smiled to himself, enjoying the way Jade’s eyes seemed to draw him in as she cutely continued her efforts. In a different setting, Jimin would have been all over the opportunity to socialize with Jade, admiring the way her dress hugged her figure. 

Jimin snapped out of his momentary daze as he glanced around, searching for his comrades only to find Jungkook standing beside him, alone. His distraction with Jade caused him to forget why they were even at this vineyard, knowing their end goal was more important than observing the cute actions of a terrible flirt. 

Taehyung completely vanished through the crowd to escape in search of the expensive bottle, knowing that the only way to score would be to seek it out before the girls had a chance to beat them to it. Jungkook glanced over to Jimin, smiling coyly as he moved to retrieve some samples. 

Emmy chugged back most of the wine in her sample glass, acting as if it was a shot to ease her annoyance as she desperately attempted to ignore the nuisances looming around them. It wasn’t until Ruby tapped her shoulder that she turned her attention away from the wine. “Look,” Ruby spoke plainly, glancing back toward Jimin and Jungkook as she observed only two of the members of their rival trio. “Seems one of the snakes got free.” She spoke softly, low enough for only Emmy to hear. 

“Shit.” Emmy cursed under her breath as she pushed her empty glass into Ruby’s hand. She looked around, noticing most guests were distracted in conversation, seeing a perfect opportunity for her to sneak away. She remembered the map of the vineyard that Jade retrieved prior to their visit, knowing that while Taehyung might have a head start, she had the layout of the facility and the code to get into the private cellar. Hopefully, those two elements would give her an upper hand. Worse case, she’d take the bottle from him by force. 

Stepping lightly, Emmy slipped out of sight from the group and got a rush from her sly nature. She swayed her hips in confidence as she fished the map from her purse, gaining a sense of her location compared to the layout. She paused in her stride, taking in the outline of her surroundings to determine her trajectory. As she examined the map, she heard the soft scuffles of boots against the floorboards.

Emmy silently gasped, quickly hiding behind a large barrel to go unnoticed in case it was a worker. She held her breath as she peeked around the barrel to see another individual with a similar apron to their tour guide and sighed as they continued down the corridor in the opposite direction that she was heading. She cautiously stepped back out into the open space and adjusted her attire before correcting her stance.

She turned on her heel and avoided clipping her heels against the flooring to seamlessly make her way through the underground. Her eyes sparkled with delight as she spotted the vaulted area of the wine cellar that presumably housed the esteemed bottle of Romanee Conti. She stashed the map back in her clutch, keeping vigilant for Taehyung or any other obstacles that would be in her way. 

Upon reaching the entrance of the vaulted room, she stood close to the keypad blending into the wall in case someone were to walk by as she snuck into their small fortress. She took one look over her shoulder before pressing in the code for entry, her fingertips creating a pretty little tune with each button tone. She heard the click of the lock sliding open and pulled the handle to swiftly step inside the vault.

As she stepped into the room, she could feel the temperature drop since they keep it refrigerated for long-term storage. Her skin automatically bristled with the abrupt change in the air before she noticed the bright copper suit of Taehyung standing in the middle of the room. “Hold the door!” He yelled, causing Emmy to furrow her brow as he ran towards her with his hand reaching out.

Reflexively she moved out of his way, watching as he dived for the vault door until it shut and she heard a series of small sounds. Taehyung slammed his fist against the surface and groaned in frustration with no regard for the volume. She pulled him away from the door and spun him around, “Are you out of your mind? If you keep that nonsense up, we’ll be caught!”

Taehyung looked annoyed as he hovered in her proximity. “There’s no way out otherwise, sweetheart.” He stepped around her, going back to the opposite side of the room and grabbing a bottle of wine around the neck before sliding to the ground. “Better get comfortable 'cause we’re not leaving until someone finds us.”

Emmy was processing that the noises she heard were the locking mechanism resetting itself as she watched Taehyung settle on the ground cradling the wine with the recognizable label that brought them there in the first place. She had half the mind to steal the bottle from his hands but was distracted by the horrifying reality that she might be stuck in a room with him. “There’s gotta be another way to get out of here.” 

She glanced around the room, finding the walls lined with racks of wine bottles from the ceiling to the ground. She sighed as she pulled open her clutch and dug for her phone. Taehyung noticed the device and rolled his eyes, “I’ve already tried, there’s no reception.”

Emmy didn’t take his word for it until she saw the absence of bars on her signal indicator replaced with a small red “x”. She shoved the phone back into her clutch, snapping the lip shut sharply. “Shit.” She hissed, taking in the environment she would need to endure for an undetermined duration.

“It’s not all bad…I can think of a few things we can do to pass the time.” Taehyung relaxed his posture, letting his legs create an inviting space between his thighs that looked comfortable and alluring all at once. 

Emmy scrunched her nose at his implication, crossing her arms over her chest as she cocked her hip. “I would keep thinking if I were you.”

Taehyung chuckled, subconsciously dragging his thumb across his bottom lip as he grinned mischievously. “I heard it doesn’t take much to change your mind. JK says you had no problem joining the mile-high club after a few drinks, and last time I checked we’re surrounded by very expensive wine.” He winked for good measure and Emmy narrowed her eyes with a spiteful flare in her irises. 

“Fuck you.”

“That’s the point, sweetheart.” He chuckled as Emmy groaned, moving to one of the racks and pulling out the first bottle she could find. 

She moved toward him and handed the wine to him. “Make yourself useful.” She demanded, allowing him to take the bottle and examine the wax seal. He glanced at her with a raise of his eyebrows as if questioning why she would want wine when he just teased her for being easy when she drank. “I’m gonna need all the wine to survive however long I’m stuck in here with you.”

The tour of the cellars concluded as the group of patrons migrated back upstairs to indulge in another round of wine tasting, this time sampling selections of their specialty wines.  Jade was diligently working on keeping Changbin in conversation, coming on too strong as the handsome tour guide internally recoiled from the thought of having to entertain her any further. 

Jimin moved up in the group, hovering not too far away from the terrible flirt as he picked up on some of the cute mannerisms of her attempts to engage Changbin. He smiled as he watched her nose scrunch each time she laughed, finding her adorable despite her terribly awkward flirting. 

He was studying a pamphlet of their wine selections, genuinely considering purchasing or, more so, stealing some to take back with them for a nightcap. He glanced up from the flier, watching as Changbin mentally began counting the guests huddled around him. Jimin quickly glanced back toward Jungkook, noticing that Taehyung was still nowhere to be seen.  He folded the paper in his hand, tucking it into the back pocket of his dress pants as he walked up toward Changbin knowing that Jade’s efforts to distract him were starting to fade as his irritation with the brunette grew.

Thesis Process Journal - 7.22.23 - Experimentation

So this past year I got very into custom doll making. I’ve gotten obsessed over Dollightful’s channel over on youtube, specifically her heavily modded doll stuff - I love seeing her engineer points of articulation and make these beautiful custom dolls out of it (My favorite is her Aquarian dragon doll). So… at the beginning of this summer I asked my aunt to take me thrifting to buy some cheap dolls to cut apart. I had the sneaking suspicion I could use the techniques to make a stop-motion friendly doll.

I found these Barbies (and one old disney Belle doll I think?) with very little existing articulation. I beheaded them, cleaned up the paint, took off the hair, and then tried to figure out where I wanted articulation. I wanted to try a more ball-jointed approach with a lot of rotational capacity - so I cut one of the dolls at the hips, under the breast, at the upper arm and elbow and at the knee. 

The legs have been proving difficult because they're jointed within the doll rather than in a more easy to access/ workshop way. They’re rubbery and hard to get epoxy putty to cling to because they’re flexible :( They’re also really lacking in hip mobility so I honestly might just end up breaking them off and making them wireframe because by god can I make a good wireframe puppet and they’ll most likely be covered by pants..

I tried making a cup for a ball joint in the midsection between the hips and breast, forming it out of epoxy. However making the ball waist has been impossible? I initially tried making one out of epoxy and now I’m gonna try a wooden bead wrapped in polyurethane foam and see if that flexibility helps anything. All these mods have honestly been doing so far though is fucking up the proportions in a fun and insane way… so I’m treating this as just a functional test so I know what I’m doing with my final, properly proportioned piece. 

I added a coat hanger wire to hook the elastic around to create the ball joint. We'll see how this goes.

I also started thinking about the head - I want moveable eyes and replacement faces to accommodate lip syncing (because I really really love to lip sync). To make the moveable eyes  took the wax on the outside of babybel cheese and spread it over a piece of thick glossy paper, cut a quarter circle out and wrapped it around my eye bead. It moves pretty smoothly but I think the wax will melt under the light (the red also kinda stains the eye bead but eyes do have red on them so I don’t find that to be bad).

I think I’d maybe try a harder thing in placement of the paper since it still kinda squishes around (though my test with an aluminum can material has pretty much failed bc I can't bend it into a cone shape well enough). Or I’ll just wrap it in epoxy and call it a day. I’ll then embed that into a skull backing and build the replacements up front like I did for Dressmaker.

Aesthetically I want to maintain a papery/fibery visual image. I’ve been considering the idea of animation on paper/cell for little cutaways/memory overlays to incorporate that 2D sensibility and maybe make everything a little more collagey? I ended up finding and looking through a bunch of old ass family photos and want to recapture that sort of hazy energy I got while looking at those. I’m not sure though - I kind of desperately wish I was around my peers so I could get some conceptual critiques before the school year started and maybe more ideas with regards to aesthetic and focus. Oh well, It’s a little under a month left before I’m back in Bmore.

A clinical trial is recruiting thousands of volunteers — including a large number of Black women who face disparities in breast cancer death rates — to try to find out.

People like Carole Stovall, a psychologist in Washington, D.C., have signed up for the study to help answer the question.

“We all need a mammogram anyway, so why not do it with a study that allows the scientists to understand more and move closer to finding better treatments and ways of maybe even preventing it?” Stovall said.

The underrepresentation of women and minorities in research is a long-simmering issue affecting health problems including Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and COVID-19. Trials without diversity lead to gaps in understanding of how new treatments work for all people.

“Until we get more Black women into clinical trials, we can’t change the science. And we need better science for Black bodies,” said Ricki Fairley, a breast cancer survivor and advocate who is working on the issue.

Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women and tend to be diagnosed younger. But it’s not clear whether 3D mammography is better for them, said Dr. Worta McCaskill-Stevens of the National Cancer Institute.

“Are there populations for whom this might be important to have early diagnosis?" asked McCaskill-Stevens. "Or is it harmful,” causing too many false alarms or unneeded follow-up tests and treatments?

McCaskill-Stevens, who is Black, leads NCI’s efforts to boost access to cancer research in minority and rural communities. She has joined the study herself.

The newer 3D technique has been around for a decade, but there’s never been conclusive evidence that it's better than 2D at detecting advanced cancers. The screening technique combines multiple pictures of the breast taken from different angles to create a 3D-like image. Both 3D and 2D mammograms compress the breast and use low doses of radiation.

Prior studies suggest that 3D finds more cancers than 2D, but catching more cancers doesn’t necessarily mean more lives saved. Some cancers missed by standard screening may not progress or need treatment. Previous studies did not randomly assign patients to a screening method, the gold standard for research.

The notion “that if it’s new, it’s shiny, then it’s better,” isn’t necessarily true, McCaskill-Stevens said. “Until we have the evidence to support that, then we need well-designed randomized trials.”

The trial has enrolled nearly 93,000 women so far with a goal of 128,000. The NCI-funded study is now running in Canada, South Korea, Peru, Argentina, Italy and 32 U.S. states. A site in Thailand will soon begin enrolling patients.

“We added more international sites to enhance the trial’s diversity, particularly for Hispanic and Asian women,” said Dr. Etta Pisano, who leads the study.

Overall, 42% of participants are Hispanic. As recruiting continues, enrolling Black women and other women of color will “absolutely” continue as a priority, Pisano said.

Participants are randomly assigned to either 2D or 3D mammograms and are followed for several years. The number of advanced cancers detected by the two methods will be compared.

At the U.S. study sites, 21% of study participants are Black women — that's higher than a typical cancer treatment study, in which 9% of participants are Black, McCaskill-Stevens said.

The University of North Carolina has signed up more Black women than any other study site. Nearly a quarter of the nearly 3,000 women enrolled at UNC’s two locations are Black.

“Women in North Carolina want to take part in something that’s bigger than them,” said Dr. Cherie Kuzmiak, who leads the UNC arm of the study. “They want this active role in helping determine the future of health care for women.”

In Washington, D.C., word of mouth has led to successful recruiting.

A chance encounter at her hair salon persuaded Stovall to join the research. While waiting for a hair appointment, she met Georgetown University cancer researcher Lucile Adams-Campbell. The two, both Black, started chatting.

“She explained how important it was to get women of color into the program,” said Stovall, who jumped at the chance to catch up on her mammograms after the COVID-19 pandemic delayed screening for her and thousands of others.

For Stovall, there was a personal reason to join the research. Her sister recently completed treatment for triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive type that affects Black women at higher rates than white women.

Women ages 45 to 74 without a personal history of breast cancer are eligible for the study, which launched in 2017. Many women also are providing blood and cheek swab samples for a database that will be mined for insights.

“It’s a dream that people had since the beginning of screening that we wouldn’t fit everybody into the same box,” Pisano said. The study's findings could “reduce disparities if we’re successful, assuming people have access to care.”

Stovall, 72, had a brief scare when her mammogram, the traditional 2D type, showed something suspicious. A biopsy ruled out cancer.

“I was extremely relieved,” Stovall said. “Everybody I know has heard from me about the need for them to go get a mammogram.”
