do you have any 2nd or 3rd gen gg songs you think everyone should listen to? or what are some of your faves?
this is such a hard question lmao, because i grew up on second and third gen kpop. if any followers have recs, feel free to drop them as well.
for me, of course there's the big or moderately popular groups (kara, 2ne1, f(x), snsd, wonder girls, apink, girls day, sistar, miss a, brown eyed girls, 4minute, aoa, after school, t-ara, secret, etc etc)
in terms of groups that might be considered more obscure:
all of 9muses' discography, in particular glue, drama, and dolls (they were not that obscure but they didn't get a single win before disbanding so they still count as flops)
evol - get up, we are a bit different (ngl they were the original girl crush concept, like girl groups were not making music like this back then! they were totally ahead of their times)
stellar - sting, vibrato (they were totally exploited by their company and sold using sex appeal, but their music was great. they deserved all the success, but NOT under that management)
spica - you don't love me (the original vocal group. if you like m*mamoo, consider listening to spica instead)
fiestar - one more, you're pitiful
rainbow - A, black swan, cha cha (rainbow blaxx)
hello venus - wigglewiggle, stickysticky, i'm ill
dal shabet - be ambitious, joker
ladies code - hate you (they're regrettably known more for the deaths of rise and eunbi than for their music, but they really did make some bops)
kiss&cry - domino game (queens.... debuted w/ this incredible song and then disbanded immediately </3)
laboum - what about you (literally one of my favorite songs of all time)
secret - shy boy (I KNOW they were fairly successful and got a triple crown w/ this song but kpoppies these days don't know them???/)
BESTie - i need you
and this isn't even getting into any of the third gen proper girl groups i loved and lost 😭 (clc, pristin, wjsn, lovelyz), OR the discographies of any of the groups i listed in the big or moderately successful category above, but I think those songs would just be easier to find if you just look up collections of 2nd or 3rd gen girl group music.
other groups i remember but never rlly got into: glam (problematic but made some fun songs), tiny-g, sunnyhill, rania (dr feel good is still iconic), berrygood
tagging @neonunau because i feel like you'd appreciate the nostalgia hit lol

Why are people making fun of itzy's comeback? So far it sounds wonderful! Personally I've added Bet On Me to my playlists after the first listen.
Granted, I know that everyone has different music tastes. But at least people who dislike it should be less harsh with their negative comments about it without fully giving it a chance. It feels unfair for them to objectively say that something sucks, you know?
i think hating on itzy has become the fun, trendy think to do for kpoppies regardless of whether or not they actually put out music that they like. people enjoyed their message of self-love when they debuted, but when they saw the numbers they pulled with it, suddenly they were tired and overachieving and had to change their sound. when they started singing about love, people hated the change in sound. when they picked up self-love again, people doubled-down on the dislike because they're 'regressing' and jyp aren't helping them 'improve'.
people have hated them for 'talking' rather than singing during mafia era while praising other girl groups for doing the same thing (a/espa, e/verglow) and actually calling for more ggs to do the same. when they did sneakers, the negativity spread to actual bullying, to the point where the girls talked about it multiple times and were nervous to release cheshire because of it. that's probably why they've gone so hard for this comeback and essentially have 4 different concepts that appeal to 4 different types of fans.
i think when it comes to itzy we've long since moved past different music tastes, to be honest. their discography has a little bit of every genre anyway, but i know enough about kpoppies to know that they don't sit through more than the title track (not even that, in itzy's case) before deciding they don't like something. with itzy it's about their status as people as well, in my personal opinion, because they're some of the only idols that have so many 2nd gen male and female idols backing them up ever since predebut and across different companies. everybody has always wanted them to succeed and only ever has nice things to say about them, from fellow idols to company staff. so what else can people pick on but the music?
even then, ALL their seniors and juniors love their music, so all the antis really have is each other to rely on to try and bring their rep down. it's pure, unfiltered rage and jealousy. it's the only constant within the girl group community as it remains oversaturated with rookies who keep debuting and disbanding every few months -- people pick up the newest girls to support and discard the 'old' ones as soon as the newbies debut. unfortunately for itzy they're the most popular girls to hate because they're also the nicest and best-liked. nothing to do with their music :(
