While not directly Titanic related, I did pop in to see the Hope Diamond at the Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. during my last trip. The exhibit featured a photograph of Evelyn Walsh McLean, a former owner wearing the diamond in its current setting. It was a series of personal tragedies of McLean 's that seemed to drive the idea of a curse. The Hope Diamond is one of two necklaces that inspired the Heart of the Ocean from James Cameron's 1997 Titanic. The other was a real sapphire and diamond necklace given to Kate Florence Phillips by her married lover, Henry Samuel Morley when the eloped aboard Titanic. The necklace was called L’Amour de la Mer: The love of the sea. (Which can be viewed at the traveling Titanic: The Exhibition).

In my prediction for what I would learn in this class, I initially said I would learn the core concepts, processes, and tools of Business Intelligence, learn business process analysis, and learn the core business processes that business intelligence systems gather data for. I did anticipate learning the basic building blocks necessary to really understand the real logistics of Business Intelligence and the role it plays in businesses and decision making. The information gathered and analyzed can help build a company and lead to increased revenues just as easily as disregarding the information can lead to unforeseen decline or profit losses. This is imperative information for the decision makers to have before making changes or implementing new products or procedures.

The course content taught me about how data sets can be used in applications such as Microsoft Power BI to deliver the analyzed data to other employees throughout the organization. A lot of the time the information is being delivered to a team that may not be as tech savvy or understand analytical jargon. Using and application like this can allow the analytics team to create pictures and diagrams of what is happening in the business and where the trend is heading. This can allow the operations team to decide what the next steps should be to ensure goals are being met.  

Understanding what stage of the process you are in and what the goals are at the moment will give us the understanding of how and when to proceed and what information is being looked for. Knowing what the next step is and knowing the information you need going into that step is important. There are unlimited amounts of data that can be pulled, so you want to make sure you really pay attention to what your pulling and uploading.
