3.1 Weapon Characteristics
Ranged weapons possess four characteristics. These are:
Firepower (FP): how much damage one shot with that weapon deals at range
Melee Power (MP): how much damage one attack with that weapon deals in melee
Targets (T): how many targets that weapon can hit with one attack
Armor Piercing (AP): how well that weapon can deal damage against armored targets
Dedicated melee weapons work the same way, but have Parrying Rate (PR) as a fifth characteristic. It allows soldiers to negate enemy melee attacks.
Units, on the other hand, have Health Points (HP - how much damage a single soldier can take) and, as a group, Coordination Rate (CR) as important stats. Coordination Rate represents how well organized troops conduct their attacks, a low CR could for example mean that a lot of soldiers fire at a single enemy, leading to lots of excess damage which could've been put to use against other targets instead.
The last important factor in fighting itself is Initiative (I) - it governs in which order casualties are resolved, which can significantly influence the relative damage output of two groups attacking each other.
I know that might be a lot to take in - but don't worry, this is not a tabletop miniature wargame. The code will do the maths for you. The only one suffering is me, who has to teach the code how to.
3.2 Damage Calculation / The Actual Fighting Part
But still, let's look at two simple examples (disclaimer: I wrote these like a year ago, so there might've been some oversights that escaped my vetting process):
Example 1 - Ranged
Let's say you have 100 troops with rifles, as well as four pieces of medium artillery. There's an enemy formation of 100 riflemen in front, and you launch a surprise attack - you have the Initiative.
So, 100 rifles and 4 medium artillery make 1 attack each on a group of 100 enemies. Your CR is, let's say, 50%.
50 of your rifles do 1000 (50 rifles * 20 FP * 1 T) Concentrated Damage (CD - those are attacks that hit directly, assuming soldiers successfully aim at enemies until they're dead, and then switch target);
the other 50 of your rifles do 20 Dispersed Damage (DD) each, sometimes hitting targets already dead or switching target without finishing the first one off;
2 medium artillery do 800 (2 medium artillery * 80FP * 5T) CD;
the other two medium artillery do 80 dispersed damage each to 10 (2 medium arty * 5T) targets.
All human units have 100 HP each. This means the rifles kill 10 enemies directly with their CD, and bring another 50 enemies down to 80 HP. The medium artillery kill 8 enemies with CD and bring 20 enemies down to 20 HP each with their DD.
But this is an interim result: CR comes into play again. Some of the wounded enemies were wounded by both the rifles' and the arty's DD, or by multiple rifles at once. To be precise, 50% of them (since the CR is at 50%).
In concrete terms, of the 45 enemies wounded, 22 will get consolidated, meaning their damage will be transferred to the other 23, starting with those with the lowest HP. So, 22 will actually be unwounded, while of the 23, 10 will die due to having 20 damage added to the 80 they already got from the artillery, while the other 13 will be reduced to 60 HP.
Which means the total result of your ranged attack is 28 dead (18 from CD, 10 from DD), 13 wounded (with 60 HP left for each), and 59 who are still fine. Since you had the Initiative, the remaining enemies may only now fire back.
Example 2 - Melee
In this scenario, you have 80 saber-armed foot soldiers (dismounted cavalry perhaps?) as well as 20 saber-armed riders charging at 100 enemies (all with sabers only, and no horses). For the sake of simplicity, we'll say both your infantry and cavalry reach the enemy at the same time.
Once again, your CR is at 50% - and so is the enemy's. That's right, they'll be hitting back this time. The reason for that is that, while your charging horseback troops may have Initiative 2, your foot soldiers only have Initiative 1, the same as the enemy.
The cavalry sabers hit first thanks to their Initiative. 10 of them (CR 50%) do 1600 CD (10 sabers * 80 MP * 2 T (sabers get +1 T when mounted)), the other 10 do 80 DD each to 20 enemies.
Those enemies now parry with their sabers, at a rate of 40%. This means that for each enemy that's been attacked (number of attacks = total T value of attackers; if the total number of defending soldiers is less than that, then that value is used instead), there's a 40% chance to negate one attack. Since there's 40 attacks (20 sabers * 2 T) raining down against 100 enemies, that means 40 chances to negate one of them. Negating works by adding up the potential damage those attacks would've caused (number of parried attacks * MP of attacking weapon) and substracting it from the CD.
Alas, our poor training dummies have been clumsy and failed to parry even a single attack. This means that before factoring in CR, there are 16 dead and 10 wounded (with 20 HP each). When CR comes in, 5 additional ones die with -60 HP each, and the overhang damage gets added to the others (unwounded ones, as there are no wounded left), causing 5 of them to get reduced to 40 HP each.
Which means the total result of this devastating cavalry charge are 21 dead (16 from CD, 5 from DD), 10 wounded (20 HP), 5 wounded (40 HP), and 64 unwounded.
Now, onto the infantry.
40 of your foot sabers do 3200 CD (40 sabers * 80 MP * 1 T), the other do 20 DD each to 40 enemies.
Soldiers with HP < 50 are assumed to be out of action, so of the 79 enemies still alive, only the 64 unwounded can parry. This time, they do far better, and manage to reduce the CD to 800, with no less than 30 successful parries.
In any case, they don't actually receive the damage before hitting back, as their Initiative is the same as that of your infantry, and that means both will attack and be afflicted by damage at the same time.
Since their CR is also conveniently sitting at 50%, 32 of them deal 2560 CD (32 sabers * 80 MP * 1 T), the other 32 deal 20 DD each to 32 of your troops.
This damage will go entirely towards your infantry, as units can only hit back against a unit with higher Initiative than them if there are no other targets. If there are multiple eligible targets, the damage will go to a random unit (in its entirety, due to mathematical limitations).
So, let's see:
Your infantry initially suffers 25 dead and one wounded (40 HP left) from CD, and another 32 wounded (80 HP left) from DD. After CR calculation (rounded down, so the damage from 15 wounded is added to that of the 16 other wounded, starting with those most heavily wounded). That's still 25 dead, one wounded (20 HP left), one wounded (80 HP left), 16 wounded (60 HP left), and 15 actually unwounded, in addition to the 22 who were unwounded in the first place.
The enemy initially suffers 8 dead from CD and 40 wounded (80 HP left), which after CR becomes 8 dead and 20 wounded (60 HP left). 24 enemies are left unwounded.
This would conclude this round of combat. In the next turn, your 20 cavalry and 55 infantry (one of whom is down to 20 HP and won't be able to do much) would face off against the remaining 44 enemy infantry, with recalculated Initiative and CR values.
Or maybe the enemy will just run away; which brings us to the next topic, which, considering the length of this, will be postponed to tomorrow's dev diary: Morale and Commitment.

Grafton Center por David Blazejewski Por Flickr: Another from this fun morning out along the Grafton and Upton Railroad. This little pike is now so busy that it has two daily jobs. After both worked in tandem up in North Grafton they departed south with GU 1191 (blt. Feb. 1978 as SCL 4221) and GMTX 226 (blt. Sep. 1975 as MILW 480) trailed by a half dozen cars and crew number two aboard GU 1160 (blt. Oct. 1977 as SCL 4010) tagging along on the rear. Upon arrival at West Upton the crew on the hind end cut off their unit and three cars and stayed to go about their work in the busy transload yard. Here is the combined train curling Center historic Grafton center on this twisting and undulating interurban style route between North St. and Upton St. near MP 3.1. Rising above the town common is the 1863 wooden Italianate Unitarian Church built after the original was destroyed in fire. I can never quite find the angle I like here as the classic broadside has been marred since modern crossing signals with gates were add several years ago.
