I've been missing having an AUX jack to play music, so I spent the last couple of days researching USB C to 3.5mm adapters. I figured I'd share my findings for anyone else who might want an adapter but finds USB C confusing.
If you know your phone has an internal DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) connected to your USB C port, you can get away with a simple adapter sans DAC and save a few dollars.
If you don't have a built-in DAC and are driving standard headphones, the Apple adapter ($9) seems like a great deal for the price and is compatible with most devices. The exception is Android devices, which appear to lack the ability to configure the Apple adapters' DAC volume to be above 50% by default.
So, for Androids, I would suggest the Samsung adapter ($9), which has similar performance.
If you're driving fancier headphones with a high OHM rating, you'll want a beefier DAC, which is outside the scope of what I was looking for.
I ended up buying both the Samsung and the Apple adapters due to the mix of devices in my household. Waiting for them to arrive in the mail.
Based on reviews, there still seems to be some amount of chance involved when it comes to compatibility, but I think this info minimizes the chance of you needing to return something. I'm also skeptical of the durability of these devices, I sort of wish they had some chunkier leads.
Also, here are some reviews I found helpful: And they even have graphs!

my galaxy s10+ has served me faithfully since 2018 and has been paid off for a few years but alas
with front and back facing cameras broken, more and more apps no longer supported, and the battery feeling a few degrees away from literally burning me after using it for more than 10 mins
it's finally time for an upgrade
rip s10 you were actually for real the best phone i've had 😔
#this also means im saying goodbye to my 3.5mm headphone jack 😭#which was one of the reasons i've held off for so long bc i really should have done this a year ago#t: wench.txt

My favourite website for Herbert Niebling patterns updated with some new patterns and I found this really fucked up looking doily. Since I wanted to knit a quick lace pattern anyway, I wanted to see if the pattern ended up as fucked up as it is in the Ravelry sample photo.
#lace knitting#knitting#knitblr#lace rot#WIP#project: doily 8#when i say this is fucked up i mean it in the most affectionate possible way#most niebling patterns seem to be more like#floral? natural looking? than this one does. My dad said it looked cool tho so like i'm the real winner#I also think my gauge might be too loose#the original pattern said size 100 crochet thread with a 2.5 mm needle and i'm using size 10 thread and 3.5mm

Have two sets of Bluetooth headphones. One from 2017 and one from 2019. They have weathered all cell phone changes until this year. Poking around, I realize that the standard has been sunsetted so the recent protocols the phone is expecting just aren't there and the devices have difficulty connecting.
Yes, the battery life is half of what it used to be but they still work. So they should "still work".
Noted the same with the 2017 car's connection. Certain status indicators didn't update after I got a new phone earlier this year. Turned out that info now requires a protocol that the car will never have.
And it's frustrating that I'm going to have to spend money for new headphones every four years when I can take the wired cans I've had since 2003 and plug them into any jack and they work just the same as always.

Do you think there's a connection from phones (esp iphones) dropping the headphone jack and people just listening to things on their phone speakers?

No one tells you how stressful headphone shopping can be when you are NOT a guy w audio knowledge
#twist rambles#my prev headphones were like 20 bucks and generic. they worked great for like 4 years until they cracked lmao. trying to get a more comfy#pair of headphones. ive heard v good things about Sennheiser. so i look into it. there are 70 different varieties. i temporarily forget i#need easily exchangeable cords (prone to breaking them+ use them for discord calls so need a cord w a mic) and am entranced by the GORGEOUS#hd 595s. insanely gorgeous to me. i then remember oh god. ok time to see if there are things that you can easily swap to get this to work.#there are NOT. i continue looking through the pairs ive seen. i find some i like. they for some reason have proprietary cord things. i would#have to modify them to have them work. this is not good for me. my head is killig me by this point. i find some 595s that are modified for#3.5mm jack. they are 3x the price of the normal ones. so. all of that to say i am learning a lot and it is horrifying for me as a guy that#is so clueless. not even 2 mention the open vs closed back stuff. or the sound blocking stuff due to sensory issues. it is agonizing
