Horror RPG Little Goody Two Shoes will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC via Steam on October 31, publisher Square Enix Collective and developer AstralShift announced. A demo is available now for PC as part of Steam Next Fest: Fall 2023.

Venture into the Woods

Little Goody Two Shoes is a horror narrative adventure game, set in a hand-painted fairy tale environment. There are 10 But there’s more than meets the eye here, as you must also manage multiple aspects of Elise’s life in the village to stay alive. Remember, all decisions matter in this story! During the day, you will need to strengthen Elise’s bonds with her fellow villagers and work to make a living by playing fun minigames. But once the moon rises, make sure to keep Elise fed, healthy and sane in the multiple encounters with deadly foes as she makes her way further into the Woods.

Stuff I'm Looking Forward To in March

Wow, somehow it's already month 3 of 2024. In addition to Daylight Savings Time (March 10 - Spring ahead), Ramadan (March 10-April 9), St. Patrick's Day (March 17), first day of Spring (March 19), Palm Sunday (March 24), Holi (March 25), Good Friday (March 29), and Easter (March 31) here is what's on my radar this month:

Movies:

Dune: Part Two

Denis Villeneuve has become one of the great visual stylists of recent years thanks to films like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. I named his film Dune Part One, one of my Best Movies of 2021. How good Part One really was depends on Part Two, which drops 3/1.

Knox Goes Away

Michael Keaton has always been a tremendous actor and now he's back in the director's chair for the second time with a starring role about a contract killer who has a form of dementia and he attempts to connect with his estranged son. Oh and Al Pacino co-stars! Opens 3/15.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire 

A Ghostbusters sequel is a tall order. Jason Reitman's 2021 sequel Ghostbusters Afterlife actually had its moments and it had a lot to say about living up to a legacy, in the film it's the grandchildren of Egon, but it could also be Jason Reitman about the fear and honor of continuing a film series that his dad Ivan began. The new sequel is directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote this with Jason. The fact that original Ghostbuster cast members are back gives me hope. Sequel drops 3/22.

Sheer Mag Playing Favorites

I was lucky enough to see Philly rockers Sheer Mag at House of Blues in May 2022. After two solid albums, they are finally back with their third, dropping on 3/1. (Review to come)

Liam Gallagher & John Squire Liam Gallagher John Squire

Former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher's solo career has been a mixed back, but his album As You Were was one of my Best Albums of the 2010s. As shown in the 2019 documentary Liam Gallagher: As It Was, he doesn't need to play music for money or fame, he has plenty. He plays because he loves music. Now he's doing a new album with John Squire, former guitarist for The Stone Roses. Sounds like a serious meeting of musical minds! Album drops 3/1.

The Black Crowes Happiness Bastards

The first new studio album from The Black Crowes since 2009 is cause for celebration. After a bitter break-up in 2015, the brothers Chris and Rich Robinson announced they were reuniting in 2019. In early 2020, I caught an acoustic live show from Brothers of a Feather (my last concert before the pandemic lockdowns) and since that show, The Black Crowes have had some reunion tours (NOTE: by reunion - I mean Chris and Rich, not the original lineup). They've released some anniversary albums, but this marks the group's first studio album in 15 years. Looking forward to it when it drops on 3/15.

The Dandy Warhols Rockmaker

I've always loved Portlandia's The Dandy Warhols. Through this blog, I've had the pleasure of interviewing lead Dandy Courtney Taylor-Taylor and keyboardist / bassist Zia McCabe, the band's 2019 Boston concert, and their excellent 2019 album Why You So Crazy. Now the band is back with a new album dropping on 3/15! (Review to come)

Film Festivals:

Boston Underground Film Festival

Boston's fun genre film festival for horror, fantasy and bizarre is back. I've had the pleasure of covering this fest from 2016 to 2019 and returning last year. The fest returns to The Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA) from 3/20 to 3/24!

Conventions:

Northeast Comic Con

I've had a blast covering the Northeast Comic Con for years now (read my coverage here) and the Spring 2024 edition returns with guests like Kevin Chapman (who I worked with on Monument Ave), a Growing Pains reunion of Tracey Gold, Jeremy Miller and Julie McCullough, The Go-Go's drummer Gina Schock and more! Convention is at the Boxborough Regency (Boxborough, MA) from 3/8-3/10. (Coverage to come).

Awards Season:

The awards season for the best of 2023 continues on with the Razzie Awards, actually the Worst of 2023 (3/9) and the Academy Awards (3/10).

Chris would be debating on whether or not to wake you up since you looked so peaceful

He knew you had stayed up later than usual to finish studying for the test you have later in the afternoon

In the end he’d resort to waking you up with breakfast in bed

Or lunch depending on how late it is

Stray Kids Reaction - Their Crush is a Foreign Idol

Bang Chan:

You and Chris had actually gone to school together for a bit (your family had briefly lived in Australia) and become good friends

You two would meet again during while your group was touring in Seoul

Having been invited to perform at an award show you would be reunited with Bang Chan

Safe to say you guys made sure to stay in touch after that

And there were many articles the next day in regard to how close the two of you seemed to be during the show

Bang Chan: Chris would instantly become shy when he notices that you flaunt any and all hickeys he leaves on you. He would just be a walking tomato the entire time. Spare him from this teasing please! And when you get cocky about it...lord. He finds the confidence attractive as heck, but he gets so embarrassed because he wants to keep this part of your relationship between you two. No one needs to know what goes on behind closed doors. But damn it’s sexy.

Lee Know: Minho wouldn’t really dwell much on how you confidently flaunt any hickey he leaves on you. That being said, once the teasing starts, whether it’s from your friends or his bandmates, he begins questioning whether or not he really should’ve left one on that part of your skin that wouldn’t be covered by your clothes. Attractive nonetheless though. Though he will seriously think carefully about where a hickey could be left the next time.

Bang Chan: Chris would definitely be happy that you feel comfortable around him to openly display affection towards him. He would wonder if he made you uncomfortable in the beginning and apologize regardless of whether or not that was the case. I can see him becoming a bit more affectionate with you as well and even trying to give more hints to let you know he likes you. It’ll show that he’s happy about this sudden change though, the boys will certainly call him out for his cheery moods.

“You guys are jealous that your crushes haven’t shown affection back.”

Lee Know: Minho would be questioning whether or not he should just stop being affectionate since it was becoming more and more apparent that you weren’t the most comfortable with his affection. When he notices that you’ve grown comfortable with him and start showing affection, he would become elated. Silently he’d be freaking out over the possibility that you may like him back. He’d certainly be more perceptive about you and how you handle him becoming a tad bit more affectionate as well.

What Is Palworld? The New 'Pokémon With Guns' Survival Game Everyone's Playing

Palworld first captured the attention of gamers (and their internet sphere) when it was revealed back in 2021. While that reveal included details about the survival aspects of the game, including multiplayer, crafting, and farming, viewers honed in on the idea of it being Pokémon but with guns. You can capture Pokémon-like monsters called Pals in special balls (and you can capture humans, too), but it’s smart to shoot them or hack at them with an axe first to lower their health. And then, once under your command, you can give them their own guns to use, of course. 

Following various trailers since that 2021 reveal, including this gameplay showcase and this one highlighting the different Pals you can find, we learned at Geoff Keighely’s Summer Game Fest last year that Palworld would finally enter Early Access on PC via Steam and on Xbox in January of 2024. Ahead of that launch, Game Informer spoke to developer Pocketpair about the game and internet speculation that it’s fake; and last week, we finally checked the game out for ourselves – watch Game Informer’s gameplay here. While we enjoyed playing the game’s first few hours, we never could have predicted how meteoric its first weekend would be. 

If you haven’t kept up, more than 5 million people purchased Palworld in its first 3 days on the market, with an all-time peak of 1,581,679 players playing it concurrently on Steam at the time of this writing (notably, this peak is different from the one I just saw moments ago, meaning even more players are continuing to pour in). That peak means Palworld has achieved the third-highest all-time peak in Steam history. It is safe to say Palworld is blowing past any and all expectations, and if you were on the internet at all this weekend, there’s a good chance you read about its debut, controversy, and more. 

But if not, fear not – we’ve got you covered. 

What Is Palworld?

If you aren’t familiar , Palworld is a survival game from Pocketpair, an independent developer behind games like Craftopia and AI: Art Impostor (remember these names because they’ll come up again later); Pocketpair is based in Japan, ironically 10 minutes away from The Pokémon Company, as noted by VideoGamesChronicle’s Jordan Middler.

While it’s easy to call the game “Pokémon with guns,” if you go in expecting that, you’ll likely be disappointed. While there are Pokémon-like creatures called Pals that look and behave like Nintendo’s famous pocket monsters, you aren’t a trainer traversing the world to collect gym badges and take on an Elite Four. You are someone attempting to survive a harsh environment with the help of Pals, guns, and various melee weapons. 

You capture Pals similarly to how you might in a Pokémon game, utilizing a special ball to add them to your party and your Paldeck list. From there, you can use captured Pals to help you capture more or as workers in your home base factory, where they produce resources, automatically craft new things for your survival, and more. You can essentially enslave them, if you choose, although you don’t have to. 

On PC, you can play with up to 31 other players on a single server; it only allows up to four total on Xbox. You can fight raid-like bosses together, build a base with friends, and encounter various NPCs in the world. In these ways and more, Palworld is more like Valheim than it is Pokémon, but it’s clear the “Pokémon with guns” pitch is what’s initially drawing players in. 

Palworld’s Meteoric Launch

Palworld officially hit Early Access last week on Thursday, January 18. It quickly ranked third on Steam in its Top Wishlists, which often provides insight into how a game might sell. Within just eight hours of launching, Palworld crossed 1 million copies sold, according to the game’s official Twitter account. The Palworld servers were quickly over-encumbered by so many players, leading to issues for people trying to play the game.

“We are blown away with the response to Palworld and we’re doing our best to respond to your issues,” the Palworld Twitter account tweeted on January 19. “Currently, our server provider is reporting that due to the large amount of concurrent players, the servers have become unstable and you may be experiencing issues connecting to servers.”

Palworld crossed 2 million copies sold in just 24 hours, on January 20, surpassing 730,000 concurrent players on Steam, achieving the 10th highest all-time peak in doing so. Palworld then hit another achievement just 16 hours later: 3 million copies sold in 40 hours. Server issues continued, but Pocketpair announced on January 20 it had an emergency meeting with Epic Games and its Epic Online Services team to resolve connectivity issues. 

The hype surrounding Palworld continued through the weekend, selling 4 million copies in just three days. Pocketpair incorrectly announced on January 21 that Palworld achieved the highest concurrent player count of any paid game in the history of Steam, but internet sleuths were quick to point out that PUBG set this record in 2018 with 3.2 million players. In 2018, PUBG was a paid game – it went free-to-play in 2022, something Pocketpair says it was unaware of at the time of its post, which is why it thought it achieved said record.

On Monday, January 22, Pocketpair announced that Palworld has sold more than 5 million copies in three days. For reference, it took PlayStation 5-exclusive (and first-party developed) Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 11 days to hit the 5 million mark. 

Today, Palworld sits in third place for all-time peaks in Steam history, behind PUBG’s 3.2 million peak and Counter-Strike 2’s 1.8 million concurrent player peak. 

If one thing is clear, players were extremely interested in Palworld. However, it’s important to note it’s an Early Access game, which means Pocketpair presumably still has a lot of work to go into the game and that issues will likely be more abundant than a standard release. Only time will tell if these numbers hold, but right now, Palworld shows no signs of slowing down. 

Palworld Controversy: A.I., Copyright, And More

During Palworld’s massive launch, more and more players and spectators online began to throw some hefty accusations at Pocketpair. While the Pokémon comparison is clear, some have called into question both how Pals were created, claiming the use of A.I., and how similar some are to Game Freak’s own Pokémon designs. 

Cecilia Fae on Twitter created a threat with dozens of Pals and the Pokémon they most resemble to give people an opportunity to see the similarities. Many seem extremely similar, leading to players and others calling into question copyright or blatant rip-offs of Pokémon, while others toe the line more than outright cross over it. Here are a few of the most similar in their thread:

There are many more examples in the full thread so be sure to check it out for additional information. But as you can probably see, some of these designs are questionable, leading to speculation that they’re straight-up model rips from Pokémon games. 

This led internet sleuths back to Pocketpair’s 2020 survival game Craftopia. Around its 2020 release, Pocketpair was criticized for how similar to Nintendo’s 2017 release, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, its latest game, Craftopia, was. With Palworld blowing up this weekend, people have looked back at Craftopia once more to point out its similarities to Breath of the Wild in light of Palworld’s similarities to Pokémon, and it’s, uhh, something – Craftopia definitely reminds me of Breath of the Wild in more ways than one.

But I’m not a game developer – I don’t know the lines between “inspired” and “copycat.” Nintendo didn’t sue Pocketpair over Craftopia so I find it hard to believe the 2020 survival game did anything illegal. However, there is a line between, “Oh nice, you attempted to make your own original spin on Breath of the Wild,” and “Oh, you’re not even trying to hide how much you took from Breath of the Wild.” Where that line sits, I don’t exactly know, but the similarities are striking and worth discussing as players analyze Palworld and Pokémon.

The discussion of copyright, design similarities, and rip-offs continued throughout Palworld’s launch weekend – it’s still happening today at the time of this writing. While some cite model rips and uninspired design, others point to something potentially far more nefarious: A.I. 

Before connecting A.I. accusations to Palworld, let’s talk about one of Pocketpair’s other games: AI: Art Impostor. 

“AI: Art Impostor is an AI drawing party game for 3-8 players,” the Steam description for the game, which hit Early Access in November of 2022, reads. “You are a progressive artist who commands AI to generate images, and you don’t need aesthetic talent to draw good artwork.” 

From the jump, AI: Art Impostor says it uses A.I. to generate images for the game, something sleuths found interesting in the wider debate of whether Pocketpair utilized A.I. in Palworld. Then, people discovered that Pocketpair’s CEO seems to be a supporter of generative A.I., a hotly-debated and controversial topic both in game development and throughout the tech world right now – read Game Informer’s feature about the game industry’s fight over A.I. here.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the internet has lost some nuance in this debate about Palworld, Pocketpair, and A.I., with many outright saying the game uses A.I. art. However, despite similarities to Pokémon – some think Pocketpair used generative A.I. art programs like Midjourney to feed it Pokémon designs and ask for something different – there’s no definitive proof to back up this claim. 

VideoGamesChronicle translated a Japanese post made by Pocketpair’s CEO, Takuro Mizobe, addressing accusations toward the company. Curiously, Mizobe doesn’t directly address accusations of A.I. However, Mizobe says Pocketpair developers are receiving abusive comments and death threats. 

“We are currently receiving abusive and defamatory comments against our artists, in addition to tweets that appear to be death threats,” Mizobe writes on Twitter, according to VideoGamesChronicle’s translation. “While we have received various opinions about Palworld, it is important to note that the supervision of all materials related to Palworld is conducted by a team, including myself. I bear the responsibility for the produced materials. I would appreciate it if these comments towards artists involved in Palworld would cease.” 

As you can see, Mizobe doesn’t mention A.I. It remains unknown if the game uses it at the time of this writing, but Game Informer has reached out to Pocketpair for clarification and will update this story if it learns more.

VideoGamesChronicle spoke to two experienced triple-A game artists about similarities between Pal designs and Pokémon. One artist told the publication, “You cannot, in any way, accidentally get the same proportions on multiple models from another game without ripping the models [or], at the very least, tracing them meticulously first.” That artist told VideoGamesChronicle they “would stand in court to testify as an expert on this.” They also point out that the silhouettes and proportions of Pals are “near-perfect matches” to certain Pokémon models, too. 

Neither Nintendo, Game Freak, nor The Pokémon Company have commented on Palworld and its Pal design similarities to Pokémon. Given Nintendo’s legal track record, which includes winning a lawsuit against a ROM hacker that led to a 40-month prison sentence for the hacker, if the company feels it has a case, it will pursue that case in court. Only time will tell, though, if Nintendo will join the accusations of copyright and design plagiarism people on the internet have thrown at Palworld and Pocketpair. 

However, it’s important to note that there are those who don’t believe Palworld to be as nefarious in design as others accuse it of being, at least without concrete proof yet, including Arkane Lyon co-creative director Dinga Bakaba, who directed 2021’s Deathloop and announced Marvel’s Blade on stage at The Game Awards 2023 back in December.

They wipe the window, Derek found himself staring at the attractive man who danced with no care in the world, and Derek found himself humming as he wiped slowly the window.

“Derek, we need to finish the floor, I’m dying to feel the ground again,” Scott whined at him.

“Okay, okay, hold your horses, we have only one floor left,” Derek said, giving one last look over the window, enjoying the live show that he got.

He felt much better when he made the pack food.

Derek looked at the pack, he could tell that they were full from the whole food, but as he looked back at his mate, Stiles is a true pack mom.

Derek saw how pale his mate was when they noticed the sheriff standing in the doorframe and looking at them.

Derek looked at his mate and then he nodded over the pack.

31 Days of Fear Fest 👻!

Like one of the undead, a spirit with unfinished business, or the Dark Lord himself….

Fear Fest is back, ghouls and gremlins!! 

Please read on, as there are some changes and additions for this year’s challenge! 

This year, there are two ways to play:  👻 Just like last year, we’ll be releasing a list of 31 spooky prompts, one for every day in October. Creators can choose how many prompts they want to create for and when they want to post their creations. Creators can combine prompts within this challenge and combine them with other challenges running in the month of October. Please use discretion and proper tagging when choosing which challenges to combine. 👻 For those of you who are itching to write a longer horror fic, craft more intricate fanart, or just want a more intense challenge, you can sign up in advance and receive the full list of 31 spooky prompts a whole MONTH early. That way you can start planning and making ASAP. It’s up to you whether you post a new chapter or installation of your fic/part of your creation each day in October, post the entire work on All Hallow’s Eve, or something in between. 

Guidelines

🎃 On August 1st the Early Bird signup form will open! When you submit your response, you will receive a confirmation email with the list of 31 Horror-themed prompts: one for each day of the month of October. 

🎃 On August 15th the Early Bird signup form will close.

🎃 On September 15th the prompt list will be posted here on tumblr for everyone to see!

🎃 Create for as many or as few as you like, whenever you like! Want to tackle all 31? Amazing! Feel particularly inspired by just one? Perfect!

🎃 Submissions must be HP-related, but all pairings and all eras are welcome!

🎃 Because the horror genre can be particularly challenging for some people, please pay special attention to your tags and CWs. If your post isn’t properly tagged we may not be able to share it.

🎃 Your contribution should engage in some way with horror genres and tropes.

🎃 Fluff, smut, and happy endings (and everything that goes along with them) are very welcome! Just because something leaves you feeling creeped out, that doesn’t mean it can’t leave you feeling warm and fuzzy, too!

🎃There is no minimum or maximum word count for fics!

Moons / Betrayal Written for @tes-summer-fest 2021 Wordcount: 986 Content warnings: Impersonation mentions Ao3 Mirror: here Directly follows Dawn.

The exclamation of shock had barely passed Andalmo’s lips before he saw Delphine’s eyes narrow, which was the only warning he got.

He stepped back, narrowly avoiding Delphine’s blade as it hissed from her sheath. She turned the momentum of the draw around into a quick slash down to his leg. He whipped his own sword down to block. The clash of metal echoed off the walls of Ustengrav, scraping, twisting, setting Andalmo’s teeth on edge.

“Delphine, what in Oblivion-”

“Don't play innocent,” she snapped, and her voice sounded exactly what it had been last time they'd spoken, sending a sickening jolt to Andalmo’s gut with the memory. “How many Blades have their blood on your hands, you fucking traitor?”

“What?” he spat, taken aback by the accusation, and she drove him three steps back with the shock of it, scrambling up the stairs to avoid her wickedly glinting katana.

“Cloud- Ruler- Temple.” Each word was punctuated by a swipe-cut-thrust as Andalmo hastily blocked-parried-sidestepped. He lost another step, scrambling back as Delphine snarled, “You led the Thalmor there. Don't deny it.”

“That’s not-” Andalmo started, but had to leap back as Delphine lunged, backtracking another two steps up the stairs. The lip of the barrow was nearly at his shoulder now.

“We could have all survived if your damned team had told us the truth!”

Andalmo gritted his teeth and let himself lose three more steps, bringing the edge of the barrow to a comfortable height. Delphine’s eyes were wet with tears, her mouth hard with rage, as she pressed her advantage into a whirling overhand strike aimed at Andalmo’s neck.

He put one foot on the step behind him and leaned out of the way. Her katana’s blade smacked hard against the barrow’s stone lip. Before she could react, he was thrusting forward, following up with a hard strike to the tip of her sword, using the stone as a fulcrum to lever the katana out of her grip.

It jolted from her hand and skittered down the side of the barrow. Andalmo grabbed a leather strap of her armor and yanked her close, off-balance up the stairs.

“Listen,” he hissed. “We didn’t know any more than you did. We were fed bad information. If we’d known the Blades were fucking outlawed, do you think we really would have called that Three-damned meeting?”

Delphine hissed at him and reached for a knife. Andalmo dropped his own sword to the stairs and grabbed her free wrist to stop that.

“You didn’t think to question that?” she spat at him. “The Thalmor signing the Concordat without outlawing the Blades?”

“Now I would!” Andalmo’s fist clenched tighter on the strap, bitterness warring with anger, unable to keep it from his voice. “But it came from my teammate, so, no. I’d like to think we were all better people before the Thalmor started hunting us for sport.”

Delphine’s eyes narrowed. Andalmo held her gaze, trying to resist the impulse to throw her down the stairs. Miralnu’s expression in his mind was as clear as the day she’d died - on the ramparts of Cloud Ruler Temple, the Thalmor invading force below, a Thalmor imposter wearing her face as an illusion. He’d been the one to dispel it, to kill the imposter in a quick, brutal knife fight, but by then it had already been far too late for anything but a backup plan.

If he’d noticed the betrayal earlier, realized Miralnu was no longer with them, would his team still be alive? Would the other Blades who’d escaped with Delphine be here? It crossed his mind now that she was alone, and he hadn’t heard anything about Blades being hunted in Skyrim. His heart started to sink.

“They’re all dead now,” he bit out. “I assume the others you escaped with-”

“Assassination team in the Jerrals.” Delphine’s words confirmed all his worst fears. “I was the only one to get out.”

“Shit.”

The hard line of anger was gone from her mouth. Andalmo held her off balance for a moment longer, then pushed her back onto her feet, only releasing the leather strap of her armor once he was fairly certain she wouldn’t lunge at him again.

She adjusted her armor, eyeing him. He glanced around for his sword. It had come to a rest two steps below Delphine, but it probably wasn’t prudent to go for it while she still seemed to be making up her mind.

He shrugged his cloak back over his shoulders and exhaled through parted lips, seeing his breath billow in the freezing morning air like some frost dragons he’d witnessed.

A pox on the Thalmor. Fuck them, fuck the Great War they sailed in on, and Andalmo heartily wished every single double-agent who might have betrayed a Blade would wake up to choking on their own rotting teeth, except perhaps three, which would stay and give them all toothache.

“Look,” he said, after he ran out of curses in Dunmeris, Cyrodilic, and even some Chimeris. This took what felt like several minutes. “Could we have this conversation in the Moorside Inn? You can keep hold of the Horn,” he added as she gave him a look that could have frozen his face off, if the early morning and the long night hadn't already done their level best. “Clearly there’s a lot to catch up on, and I don’t think we’ll be better for having the conversation out here.”

Delphine hesitated, then gave a curt nod and fastened the Horn to her belt. Andalmo stepped back and gestured for her to continue up the stairs. She shoulder-checked him as she passed. He resisted the urge to make a rude gesture at her back, just in case she turned around, stepped down a few levels to scoop up his sword, and slipped it back into its sheath, following her up the stairs and away from Ustengrav.
