In this tutorial, we will create a parametric infinite cube table and we will see how to keep some of its parameters parametric, meaning that, after making the main geometry, we can go back and change things in it. After extracting the necessary segments from a base chamfered box(used as a path), we will use Loft to make the main shape using a custom rectangle as a profile.

Sometimes you need your transform gizmo to be oriented in a certain way, other than the typical orientations, to perform operations like Move, Rotate, and Scale. Starting from Max 2023 we have this nice tool called Snap Working Pivot Tool, that allows us to do that, and it comes with multiple options to help us create and manipulate the working pivot point. Also, in addition to that, it gives us the ability to extract a construction plane out of the created working pivot. This tool is useful in many areas, like transforming objects, rigging, animations, Smart Extrude, etc,... So watch the video until the end to learn about this tool and its various options.

If you wanted to animate an object spinning really fast, there are three main embellishments at your disposal. You could add smear frames, you could add doubling, or if you wanted to get a little crazy with it, you could have that object bend and stretch to really emphasize the inertia of the motion.
Or you could do all three at the same time!
I didn't want to like Zenshu at first.
Saying I'm not a big fan of isekai as a genre would be an understatement, so I was straight up peeved when I found out that what I initially thought would be a flawed industry's unflinching look in the mirror made by THE studio that has become the symbol of the Japanese animation industry's broader problems with overworking and underpaying, this was just gonna be yet another in a long line of paint-by-numbers escapist power fantasies in a genre that was tired from the moment it was born, just like yaboy, sleepy to the max if you know what I'm saying.
And this recreation of a scene from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), (which was one of the first breakout roles for anime legend and Evangelion director Hideaki Anno) certainly helped soften my attitude towards it, but a series of references to old stuff wouldn't be enough.
(both versions trimmed here)
But its tribute to classic anime and animation in general goes beyond just references.
This absurdly over the top modernized version of a magical girl transformation animated by Keisuke Toyoda (豊田 桂祐 ) feels like it contains all the possibilities of animation and imagination in just 3 preposterously dense cuts. There is just WAY too much going on here at once, in a way that feels very self aware.
Every color you could imagine, lighting from three different directions, what looks like three different layers of effects and sparkles, countless compositing effects, what looks like some sort of 3D particle simulation in the background,
this psychedelic background art that seems to represent Natsuko's blood vessels, a bit where you can see what it took me several episodes to realize are Natsuko's actual blood vessels and skeleton through her body,
and… some birds of course.
Most of the main elements are animated on 2's, but there are so many layers -- the timing of each offset from the rest -- that it almost feels like the whole thing is animated on 1's because there is practically no single frame where at least something doesn't change.
It's really an assault to the senses that contrasts hilariously with the mundane action of actually sitting down at a desk and drawing. There's even a little death note reference thrown in there to poke fun at this contrast!
And fully committing to the sailor moon bit, they repeat this stock animation in almost every episode. While it's no masterpiece plot-wise, it is at least more than I expected on that front too, but that's more than I can get into here. I talk about that some more and a bunch of other stuff in this video, from which this post is an adapted excerpt! Go watch it and comment, "wow sWIMP John, I used to like your videos but you've really fallen off hardcore. Go back to making magic school bus AMVs. Unsubbed."

I love your disabled reader stories, how would you feel writing a low vision/blind reader. Any driver you want for it, also maybe reader possibly having a guide dog. Keep up your amazing writing and have a lovely day.
Lowkey in the hospital rn (not ER, no worries) so this is a nice distraction :)
Drivers with Visually Impared Reader

Verstappen, Piastri, Tsunoda, Hamilton, Alonso
Max Verstappen
Whenever you and Max run into signs that don't have braille, he tweaks out
Even if you're kinda used to it, Max is always infuriated by the ableism of Europe and the Motorsports community
If you use a white cane he always gives anyone who walks on blind paths the nastiest stimk eye
If you have a guide dog, whenever it's off duty it's just the bestest friend with Max's pets
Racing is actually very hearing oriented, so he is very exited to teach you to sim race
He gets 3d models of the tracks and teaches you how to listen for how fast you're going
He loves being able to share his passions
There is nothing hotter to him than his boyfriend sim racing
Oscar Piastri
When you guys first get together Oscar wants to know what it's like to be blind, so he tries to walk around his apartment blindfolded
He doesn't even make it an hour, and aquires tons of bruises
He doesn't tell you he did that until you'd been dating for over a year, and says it really helped him understand what your life is like
He also learns the importance of dulled furniture
And he makes sure his mom's house is also disabled friendly
Which she does without question of course
Yuki Tsunoda
He puts 亀吉 on your service dog's back all the time
Part time service dog, full time taxi
Japan is actually pretty Blind-friendly, so he really likes taking you there
It makes him happy to see you not be treated like an other, instead just be treated like a person
Whenever you come to the paddock he gets really protective of you
Like he sticks by your side because he knows someone is gonna be rude, but maybe they won't if they know he's about to punch them
Lewis Hamilton
As soon as you decided to move in together Lewis spent an entire day making a 3d model of his apartment for you
It is perfectly to scale
He also makes sure that any corners of his furniture aren't sharp in case you bump into them when you're still getting used to the apartment
Whenever your service dog is off duty he will spend hours playing with it and Roscoe
He gets a customized service dog vest with Ferrari/Mercedes colors for when you're in the paddock
Even if you can't see it, he'll make sure that you still slay
Pierre Gasly
Whenever he's away for races, he record audio books for you
He says that his voice is better that the boring monotone ones
He loves having cuddle piles with Simba, your service dog, and you
All his pretty boys
He's very sweet with you, and loves going on walks with you, but if you run into someone being rude and getting in your way, he'll snap
He's very protective
He knows you can hold your own, but he also wants to take care of you

HELLO!! big fan of your animatics!! How do you make them and do you have any tips for inspiration, planning, and what software do you use?
Thank you! I'm glad you like them!
I think the realization that revolutionized the way I think about storyboarding the most is that you HAVE to let your imagination drive. I start off every animatic with super loose, super messy, barely legible sketches, with wrong anatomy, janky movement, etc. Instead of focusing on making it look good, I can just focus on setting it up for its potential, and starting my motivation at the highest point it can be. I never let my first draft take more than a few hours over the course of like 2 days max, or else the drive dissipates.
If I start a board right away with the cleanest, most beautiful art I can muster, I'll kill my own motivation, like "Oh god, in my head, I imagined a huge spinning 3D camera shot here, with a bunch of dancing characters. That last panel alone took me like 30 minutes to draw, I don't wanna do this! I'll draw a simpler, flatter scene instead." and then it ends up looking nothing like how I imagined, and I get demotivated before abandoning the project. But if I start with super messy lines, just barely enough to get the idea out onto a screen where I can watch it, the excitement and imagination will drive, like "Wow, this shot with a huge spinning 3D camera and all these complicated characters looks SO COOL! It's gonna take a lot of work, but look how interesting it looks already! I can't give up on this!"
For reference, this was puppet boy's first draft!
Storyboarding is a bit different from a lot of other visual art mediums because it takes a LOOOOT more work before it starts feeling rewarding. Learning to manage your own motivation is a huge part of building the skill that I feel a lot of people don't mention.
But when it comes to learning how to finalize it, study up on your storyboarding rules! Learn about perspective, anatomy, screen direction, and learn to draw FAST (that's a big one). Draw out shots from your favourite movies, study their composition and take note of their camera/character movement, and how it aligns with the shots sandwiching them. Learn from other artists (I recommend Toniko Pantoja, he's a very experienced board artist who makes a lot of videos abt improving your boards and what it's like to work in the industry), and PRACTISE! Your first piece of art, whenever you try anything new, is going to SUCK. You're gonna think its bad. That's just how art goes. But the next time you do it, you'll always, always, improve, even if just a little, even if you can't see it for yourself.
The biggest thing to keep telling yourself when making storyboards is DON'T GIVE UP YET. YOU'RE SO CLOSE TO MAKING SOMETHING COOL. And then you have to keep telling yourself that over, and over, and over, and over, through all the sighs, and the frustrated rage-quitting, and the exhausted temporary give-ups, and then eventually, those animatics you keep building in your head get to be real! And it feels incredible.
#I have been feeling very sentimental over storyboarding recently for some reason#I feel like I've been struggling to get to a point where it feels 'easy' for years and I've only just now cracked the code#honestly I think making puppet boy was a load-bearing task in my journey as an artist as silly as that may sound#because I've never made anything like it even though I've been dreaming of making something like it for years#and now that I've made it I know I CAN make stuff like this#so making more just feels easy#teehee I love animation and I love art#I love storyboarding and I love my job and I am so incredibly lucky to get to do this every day#I'm so thankful for all the opportunities I've been given to get to do this and I'm even more thankful people like what I make#feeling hashtag sappy#thank you for the ask!#maybe I'll make a full video talking much more in depth abt storyboarding someday#because I definitely have a lot more to say#mailbox
