Here’s how Murray Stein defined Jung’s conception of the shadow in Jung’s Map of the Soul, “Chapter 5 - The Revealed and the Concealed in Relations with Others”, The Ego’s Shadow:

One of the unconscious psychic factors that the ego cannot control is the shadow. In fact, the ego is usually quite unaware that it even casts a shadow. Jung used the term shadow to denote a psychological reality that is relatively easy to grasp on an imagistic level but more difficult to grapple with on the practical and theoretical levels. He wants to highlight the flagrant unconsciousness that most people exhibit. Rather than referring to the shadow as a thing, however, it is better to think of psychological traits or qualities that are “in the shadow” (i.e., hidden, behind one’s back, in the dark) or “shadowy.” Whatever parts of the personality that would ordinarily belong to the ego if they were integrated, but have been suppressed because of cognitive or emotional dissonance, fall into the shadow. The specific contents of the shadow may change, depending upon the ego’s attitudes and its degree of defensiveness. Generally, the shadow has an immoral or at least a disreputable quality, containing features of a person’s nature that are contrary to the customs and moral conventions of society. The shadow is the unconscious side of the ego’s operations of intending, willing, and defending. It is the backside of the ego, so to speak.

References to O!RUL8,2?

Like Persona was inspired by Skool Luv Affair, this comeback trailer is inspired by O!RUL8,2?.

The colors white and red are a reminder of the cover of the album.

The music samples “Intro: O!RUL8,2?” while the video includes glass breaking and subliminal drawings that are references to the video of the comeback trailer for O!RUL8,2?.

Some of the drawings are identical between the two videos. For example, we have a mysterious series of letters in both:

We also find back the square triangle circle symbols and the star. These symbols are also on the poster for the 3rd Muster ARMY Zip+.

There are also several “O!RUL8,2?″ that appeared in the video. Note that in the first screenshot, it’s actually  “O!RU8,2?″, with the L missing.

We can also catch a glimpse of the old BTS logo in one shot.

Other references

Suga is wearing a Dior outfit reminding the collection the boys wore during the  Speak Yourself tour.

The crown already appeared in the comeback trailer for Persona (see the end of the post for another point about the crown). Suga on a square stage above a crowd is also a possible nod to the video. The lyrics of “Interlude: Shadow” also appear to be an answer to the ones of “Intro: Persona��.

As pointed by several fans, the concept of BTS being surrounded by grabby hands and lens reminds of the concept photo for the version S of Love Yourself 結 Answer.

The hooded black figures that appeared in “Fire”, “Mic Drop”, and “Not Today” made their comeback. It was explained in an interview that these figures are haters turned into BTS’ followers. The press release explained that here, the crowd personifies Suga’s multiple egos and desires.

The position of Suga at the beginning is similar to the pose of Jungkook at the end of his solo performance of “Save Me” at the 2019 Melon Music Awards.

Other details

The hallway has seven doors (as many as BTS members, and like the title of the album) and an eighth one that’s the exit door.

A shot showed money symbols, Dollars and Wons, on the smartphones in the crowd.

Suga has a collar with “AMBUSH” written on it when he’s jumped at (cr.).

Several mirrors, often broken, are also in the video. Mirrors are usually an element associated with RM, notably after his Short Film, REFLECTION.

As found by Spectrum Obsessive, there are several references to Basquiat in this video. Paintings in the style of Basquiat could also be seen in “Fire”.

During the scene referencing the Angel, Inspired by Basquiat by Augusto Sanchez, several words appear:

“angels live in my heart”, a sentence actually present on the piece of art

Crown. Crowns appeared several times in the video. Considering their style, they’re another reference to Basquiat (and as mentioned above, to Persona’s comeback trailer)

Apart from the first sentence, @Octo_bangtan found that all the words and some of the symbols are from Basquiat’s “Untitled Triptych”.

@postgradksj also noticed similarities between the set of the hallway and a piece of work from Anish Kapoor called Svayambh (more details in these threads: @kkookiekoo, @minimoanie).

During the scenes on the mirror set, they used a Bolt High-Speed Cinebot Camera (cr.).
