wip what could have been wednesday

A few days of lost time, even a few months was nothing for Shen Wei. Would be nothing, for any Dixingren. But for Zhao Yunlan — Haixingren lived such short lives, in comparison. There was no need for Zhao Yunlan to burn his life away trapped here. Shen Wei says, “There’s a way out, maybe. I found it yesterday morning.”

Zhao Yunlan misunderstands. “I won’t make you stay here, Shen Wei. I didn’t know what I was getting us into when I dragged you here. You have — classes, and students.” He trails off.

Shen Wei’s crossing to Zhao Yunlan before he registers himself moving, hand coming up to cup Zhao Yunlan’s cheek, but he catches himself and grasps Zhao Yunlan’s shoulder instead. “No,” he says, too sharply. “No. Do not mistake my meaning. I am not leaving you in here alone, Zhao Yunlan. Do not ever think that I will ever leave you alone of my own volition."

Zhao Yunlan’s eyes, wide and dark, find Shen Wei’s. His exhale trembles across Shen Wei’s wrist, and Shen Wei lets go of his shoulder with a jolt. It’s too much. Shen Wei jerks his gaze away.

ahh this isn't a snippet of a wip so much as it's a BELOVED cut scene from Day After Day |日复一日 that i couldn't figure out how to keep. there was going to part of a whole argument between weilan in loop 3, but then it turned out to work better for shen wei not to figure out how to get out until zhao yunlan puts it together later. but i was so sad to not get to keep shen wei being way too intense for the situation, so here you go

VALORANT Agent Popularity Contest

As a new returnee to the VALORANT fandom, I was astounded by the lack of Harbor - I had imagined he would be at least moderately popular, not down at the bottom. That's fixable, but it got me wondering, Just how unpopular is Harbor really?

I decided to use AO3 as a measure of fandom popularity because it's easily searchable. The total number of fics doesn't mean much, because some characters have been out for much longer, so I divided it by the number of days since each character's release to get the rate of fics per day. Without further ado, the list:

It turns out, the answer to Just how unpopular is Harbor really? is that he is at the absolute bottom of the list (at least according to our narrow definition of popularity). This definition isn't perfect, but it's the best I can think of - if you have any suggestions let me know!

I also got information on the most popular ships and tags, which I will post as soon as I get them presentable. Spoiler: people are horny for Chamber.

Did this turn out how you thought it would? Who did you expect to be lower or higher? (Harbor aside, I was quite impressed that Sage has managed more than one fic per day on average for four years now.) I'm going to end this here because that Harbor fic isn't going to write itself. Shen Wei swallows. “And this is why you asked me to—” he makes a vague gesture that means go undercover as your husband “—pretend with you.” Zhao Yunlan comes to a stop, eyes on Shen Wei. “That’s why the cover is a married couple. The reason I’m asking you is because there are no other options for people to go undercover with.” Shen Wei scoffs to give himself an excuse to look away. “You certainly know how to flatter someone, Zhao Yunlan.” Or: Four Haixingren disappear for two months after a stay at a romantic mountain retreat. Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan book a weekend there to find out what happened.

it's finally here!!! my beloved fic for the 520 day guardian reverse exchange! this was written for trobadora, who gave me the most delicious set of ideas to fit into a story. it was so fun.

i have no idea how to describe this fic, frankly - this is, hands down, the most complex and most heartwrenching and most incredible thing i've ever written in my entire life.

here is a list of some things in it: a kiss, a mystery, a change of heart. old chinese people, dark energy world-building, lesbians, big-time character parallels, forgery of documents, rainstorms, rowboats, lollipop symbolism, [redacted], bedsharing, grading, the stupidest undercover name ever. zhao yunlan described with so many light metaphors. shen wei being the most shen wei i could make him.

Zhao Yunlan finds him, of course. “Something wrong, Professor Shen?” he asks, coming to a stop in front of where Shen Wei is sitting, back ramrod straight, in one of his guest chairs, gaze trained on the floor. “Nothing’s wrong, Chief Zhao,” Shen Wei says without looking up, and his voice is calm and measured, but he’s lying. Against Zhao Yunlan, who can see through him to a terrifying degree, it’s almost a pointless gesture. Zhao Yunlan moves to sit in the other chair, but seems to think better of it and merely leans against it, body turned slightly away from Shen Wei as if to give him some privacy. He laughs, awkward. “It was that bad pretending to be my new husband, huh.” Shen Wei’s eyes snap up. Zhao Yunlan is uncharacteristically still, uncharacteristically despondent. There’s a tired slant to his shoulders that Shen Wei doesn’t like. “I won’t make you do it again,” Zhao Yunlan says, quiet and decisive. “We’ll find some other way to talk to her. I’ll go in alone if that’s the best we can come up with.” Shen Wei’s out of his chair before he registers himself moving, hand coming up to cup Zhao Yunlan’s cheek, but he catches himself and pats Zhao Yunlan awkwardly on the shoulder. “No,” he says, too sharply. “No,” he tries again, gentler, “my apologies. That wasn’t my intention at all.”

“Hmph,” the matchmaker says, but there’s a quiet, sad undertone to the sound that catches Shen Wei’s attention. He knows that intonation, from having heard it in his own voice before. “So,” the matchmaker says. “You’ll be wanting to get evaluated for marriage compatibility, is that it?” “Yup,” Zhao Yunlan says, beaming at Shen Wei. “Shall we sit down?” “I suppose I can’t stop you,” the matchmaker says, and leads the way into a smaller antechamber. Once they’re seated, they go through some standard things, then “Take his hand again,” the matchmaker says, with the same bored cadence that she’d said everything since they sat down. Shen Wei jolts, composes himself, and reaches over. Zhao Yunlan’s hand is big, warm palm and cold fingertips. Unconsciously, Shen Wei laces Zhao Yunlan’s fingers between his own to warm them. “Hm,” the matchmaker says again, watching it, and then falls silent.

wheeeeeeeeee! another cut scene from the scrapped version of the 520 day fic. honestly idk what to say. i feel lightly unhinged, i think it's going great, it just needs to keep going great for a little bit longer.

there is, of course, his long-cherished secret dream of quietly sharing space with zhao yunlan doing something quiet and domestic like grading, rather than what he’d gotten so far, which was sharing space with zhao yunlan while finding out just how terribly the man took care of himself on a daily basis. but it is also true that shen wei has grading to do, and will forever have grading to do. only tenured professors who selectively jumped between personal research and teaching graduate seminars could afford to dodge grading over the break. those lowly tenure-track professors who taught introductory courses on cell biology and were occasionally allowed a one-credit evening course on dixing dna were mandated by university standards to give assignments that were due the friday before the break. "thank you, zhao yunlan," shen wei says evenly. "i will be happy to have some grading time."

Shen Wei first gets word of the whole situation when Li Qian flops dramatically into his office, mumbling about eligible young bachelors and where they can stick their — something.

Shen Wei carefully blots his ink, sets his brush down, and says, “Something wrong, Li Qian?”

“Ah, no, professor,” she says, and then barely a minute later says, “Isn’t it so annoying to get matchmade? Like how does anybody know who you’re compatible with? I just really think these are things that need to be found out on your own, through happenstance, or some random life-changing encounter.”

This is … also how Shen Wei feels, based on his limited relevant experience. “Yes,” he says, for lack of anything better to say. “I certainly agree.”
