In case you’re interested, I am using a Vision Scientific VS-2FZ Trinicular Zoom Stereo Microscope with a 5MP camera for pics.

We begin at MAXIMUM ZOOOOM!

[ID: Hard to tell what this is up close. But they’re white, shiny, and sharp looking, interspersed with teeny dark bits. Are those fibres? Crystals? Flakes? Skin? Is that dark stuff dirt? Ink? Bugs? Blood? /End ID]

[ID: Um, still a mess of…stuff. Kinda white. More little dark dots. Definitely fibrous. But is it paper? Plastic? Some third and mysterious thing starting with a P merely for the sake of alliteration? And…Is that a curve at the bottom? /End ID]

Ok, not too helpful, let’s back out some more.

[ID: Ok, now we’re getting somewhere. It’s round and it’s fibrous and it’s white with little black specks. There might be a flake there too, same material. Can’t tell if this is normal or out of the ordinary. But it’s really round, even up close, and the round thing looks raised. Like the top of a LEGO block, but…fibrous, thready. /END ID]

[ID: It is clear to me now from this vantage point at which I find myself that there are yet more of these round, fibrous masses. They are arranged in some geometric pattern whose ultimate purpose, for all my scientific knowledge, I cannot fathom. /END ID]

[ID: Thé image is the same, but an immense blade has descended from the heavens, its reflective point, glinting and metallic, pointing at the original target of our investigation. Perhaps if we zoom out fully we would have a better perspective. Quick Watson! The game is afoot! /END ID]

[ID: our perspective shifts beyond zooming, beyond the microscope. Returning to the macro-world, we find ourselves affixing our gaze upon an iPhone picture of an Xacto knife, blade pointing downward at a torn fragment of brightly illuminated absorbent paper towel. We can now see the circular, dotted landscape as the embossed dots making up the pattern on the paper towel fragment. /END ID]

Huh. The part I find nearest about this image set is the black dots. Totally can’t see them without the scope.

Oh yeah, and the fact that this entire time we’ve been looking at little dipped valleys as opposed to raised mountains. The final iPhone image of the microscope viewing area shows the paper roll dimples are all facing downwards.

Hi thank you! And I'm sorry for the very late reply. I haven't been paying much attention to my messages since the flood of gaza gofundme messages started last year. they drowned out any other messages my inbox for a good while.

thank you! for a long time I have been walking that line unconsciously, it was only after editing a nightscape photo of a mountain lake in the Pyrenees from 2019 (https://nature-hiking.tumblr.com/post/682430133684076544/) that I realized that had become my style :)

I think this is the result of my trying to capture how I experienced the landscape rather than a perfect one on one representation of how it looks. that's also why I usually dislike having people in my photos, as my mind is typically able to filter them out while experiencing the landscape, but not when viewing the photo later on. (and also probably why most of my "sunny" photos are done with a polarizing filter, as I always wear polarizing sunglasses while hiking 😅)

as for my background, I wasn't really big on artistic outlets when I was young. absolutely hated doing arts & crafts for example, and never really got into playing an instrument either. in that sense I'm probably a very stereotypical scientist 😅. the one artistic thing I was into was photography. I remember getting my first 5MP point and shoot camera for my birthday in the early 2000's. Unfortunately I dropped it again fairly soon out of fear of being seen as different by my classmates more than I already was.

I only picked it back up when I went for a three month hiking & festival tour of the western US in 2015. I got a canon 70D with a 18-135mm kit lens (~30-200mm full frame equivalent) for that. I spent a fair bit of time doing concert photography on the vans warped tour, as a band I was friends with was playing it. and spent a lot of time visiting Yosemite, Yellowstone, & Grand Teton national parks. and at Yellowstone is where I met up with @rivermusic. meeting up with her and a few other people in the area also big on photography is probable what kept my passion burning bright from there on out.

I continued to do a ton of concert photography for several years after that. however the difficult lighting conditions when shooting from the audience and severe time crunch involved took the fun out of it after that. I do think it played a big part in my rapid development as a photographer, as each concert would result in me editing through around a thousand photos within a couple of days afterwards.

to close off with how these photos are created:

step one for me is finding an exciting long distance trail to hike, as this takes me to remote places that aren't run over by other photographers yet. multi-day / -week / -month hikes also let you really live the landscape and get intimate with it. which I feel makes it much easier to find cool shots. though the time pressure of needing to hike a certain distance each day does also lead to a lot of rushed, more snapshot style, of photography. still, I much prefer it over the roadtrip style of finding photo spots that most other landscape photographers seem to prefer.
