(Update 6/3)
Sit down a spell, weary traveler. Come and sit by my fire; bask in the warmth of the flame and rest your aching scrolling finger. You'll be sitting a while, for I have a tale to tell:
Okay, so I've had a Toshiba laptop for the better part of ten years. Maybe a little longer. That laptop has survived being struck by lightning, submerged in a bathtub, and literally having a whole bookcase topple down onto it. I thought it was immortal...
I was sadly mistaken.
About six months ago, I noticed that the typing was getting sluggish. I'd patter away at the keyboard and the letters would appear with a bit of lag. That's fine, since I use Dragon to talk-to-text for quite a bit of my writing. I really only use the keyboard for final assembly, editing, and doing quick rewrites. So, it really didn't bother me. Fastforward to April, which we will call The Great Depression. The time discrepancy between typing and having letters appear on screen became a whopping 40 seconds. Yes, I timed it.
But that was okay, because I could still use my Dragon headset.
Until I couldn't.
It would connect, but the words wouldn't appear on screen. I made sure that all of my programs were up-to-date, and that everything was working. The headset connected to my family's computers just fine. So that meant it was something wrong with mine.
Without being sure if it was the hardware or software at fault, I backed everything up to OneDrive and Google Docs.
I factory reset.
Twice. To no avail.
Over the next few days, my laptop stopped registering any keyboard input at all. It got to a point where I wasn't able to turn it on or off.
Taking it to an electronics store to get repaired didn't help, either. No luck. They said that it would be more cost effective to just buckle down and get a new one, since the age of the laptop meant that I would probably be constantly maintaining it.
My poor Toshiba died kicking and screaming, putting up a fight worthy of an epic ballad.
I saved up for a few weeks, got a new laptop, and went through the rigmarole of getting all of my programs back on it. My files are in order. My life is in shambles (but that's normal, LOL).
I DID do some story work without my computer, but... it's bad. Like, I'd die in shame if I posted anything that I thumbed in. So. Many. Spelling. Errors. How people write on their phone is beyond me. That's a talent I simply don't possess.
At this point, I'm thinking of renaming this story "HIATUS" lol. JK. But I'm seriously peeved that this happened after my last big break. Why couldn't the Depression and laptop breakdown coincide nicely? I guess that's too much to ask of the universe *Shakes fist at the sky*.
I'm creating a damn bingo card for every stupid thing that happens to me while I try to write. Because this is getting ridiculous. I broke my fingers, there was a total solar eclipse, I had a major-ish mental breakdown, and my computer bit the big one. With a free space, that's a bingo. Let's hope I don't get a blackout before the end of 2024.
I doubted the fanfiction curse. I really did. But it's apparently real. And this writer's curse has teeth, people. It bites hard.
I have my MerMay two-shot pretty well done (because I was typing it during The Great Depression), but the next chapter for REARRANGED is still rough. Crimson Chapter 3 is halfway done, but who knows how long that'll take.
The bottom line is that I'm alive and still working on the stories. The next update on this blog will be the posting of several chapters for a few different works. Fingers crossed.
Also, I'm very, very slowly answering the comments in my AO3 inbox. Some of them were pretty lengthy, so it might take a bit. Oof.
If there ever comes a time that I drop this fanfiction or am unable to continue for whatever reason, either I or my husband will be posting the entirety of my outline, as well as anything that's been pre-written for you guys to enjoy. That way there are no questions left unanswered or mysteries unsolved.

A link to my personal reading of the Scriptures
for the 23rd of April 2025 with a paired chapter from each Testament (the First & the New Covenant) of the Bible
[The Book of Hebrews, Chapter 9 • The Book of Nehemiah, Chapter 4]
along with Today’s reading from the ancient books of Proverbs and Psalms with Proverbs 23 and Psalm 23 coinciding with the day of the month, accompanied by Psalm 35 for the 35th day of Astronomical Spring, and Psalm 113 for day 113 of the year (with the consummate book of 150 Psalms in its 1st revolution this year)
A post by John Parsons:
The Book of Life...
The sages say every person's life is a "book," as it is written: "This is the book of the generations of Adam" (Gen. 5:1). There are heavenly scrolls written about the story of your life (Dan. 7:10; Rev. 20:12). They further note that the Hebrew word for "name" (i.e., shem: שׁם) shares the same numeric value as the word "book" (i.e., sefer: ספר), suggesting that a person's name summarizes the meaning of their life.
Likewise God's Name contains all the letters of the Scriptures - from the very first letter in “bereshit” (i.e., בּ) to the very last letter in “amen” (i.e. ן) - which, when put together, spell the Hebrew word for "son" (i.e., ben: בן). The revelation of God, then, is disclosed in the life of His Son, who “Alef and Tav” (את), the Direct Object, the Beginning and End, of all things...

Boosting a Grade
Written for Dannymay day 6 Prompt: Eclipse Fandom: Danny Phantom Characters: Danny, Sam, Tucker, Lancer, Ghost Words: 1921 Summary: it's a rare eclipse happening and Lancer is willing to give those who show up to the event a bump on their letter grade, but Danny prince of the Ghost Zone has to attend a formal event for the eclipse, and now his powers are messing up!

“Alright class as you are all aware the eclipse is happening this month. Since we want all of our students to experience this the school will be putting on a late-night after-school event. Everyone is welcome to come and watch the eclipse together. We will be providing glasses. If you have any questions please ask,” Lancer talked as he read from the paper, handing them out to each of his 11th-grade students.
“Is attendance mandatory?” Tucker Foley asked.
“While attendance is not mandatory for those of you who wish to gain some extra credit I am willing to bring up your grade by one whole letter grade if you attend the event and write a small one-page report about it,” Lancer responded, seeing the trio’s heads pop up.
Lancer isn’t exactly known for doing things like this, but he can see how hard the trio is trying to help Danny get his grades up. They have been better the recent years but are still a far cry from the straight-A student that he use to be.
Seeing the class descend into loud mumbles he clapped his hands to quiet them down to continue his lesson on the Scarlet Letter.
“Danny you have to go! This is a good opportunity! Sam told him at lunch.
“But I have to be in the Ghost Zone! It’s an official thing,” Danny groaned.
“You could talk to Clockwork, and see what he has to say?” Tucker suggested.
“Yeah I’ll go there after school,” Danny agreed when he suddenly sneezed. His friends were now giving him weird looks. “What? It was just a sneeze?” Danny asked them, shrugging.
“Dude you got the scary eyes out,” Tucker taped his own eye to make a point, completely forgetting he had glasses on.
Quickly blinking rapidly Danny rubbed his eyes in the hope to get them back to normal.
“They're still green,” Sam told him as Danny let out a curse.
“Guess I’m skipping the second half of school. Cover for me?”
“Always,” the two friends responded with a smile as Danny disappeared in thin air, leaving the two to their lunch.
“So what’s happening? My eyes are green in human form but blue in ghost. That makes no sense,” Danny paced around his mentor’s tower.
“Relax it is nothing that can be solved. It is the power of the eclipse. This is why we have the Solar event coming up that I asked you to be present for. As our soon-to-be king, it is only right that you speak on behalf of the new era,” Clockwork informed him.
“A new era? Clockwork eclipses happen all the time. . .don’t tell me this is some special eclipse?” Danny groaned.
“You would be right. This is a total solar eclipse. The smaller ones that happen throughout the years only have a small effect on us ghosts, so small that one doesn’t even notice it. But for us ghosts to have a total solar eclipse while in the process of getting a new king is a sign of a new era. I for one think that it will be an era of prosperity,” Clockwork smiled at him.
“But I need to be at school during it! Lancer said he will bump up my grade by a whole letter! I could go from a C to a B in his class,” Danny panicked.
“Is there, not a way to be excused from the event and still get the grade? Clockwork asked.
“Maybe if Jazz helps me?” Danny thought as a plan formed in his head. “Okay I can probably get out of the event and still get the letter grade but we have to figure out how to get my eyes under control,” Danny told him.
“Here this will hold but the more you use your powers the weaker the effect will be,” Clockwork waved his hands and Danny felt a shiver through his spine. “I have added an extra boost to help you get home. The effect will last till the eclipse.”
“Thanks, CW,” Danny grinned, getting ready to fly home.
“Remember young prince. This is only a camouflage spell. If you do something inhuman it will still be noticed,” Clockwork formed him as Danny nodded in understanding.
“I should be back on Friday! Send me a message if you need me before then,” Danny waved by, easily flying back.
“Hey Jazz,” Danny said into his phone.
“Hey, Danny. Did you need something?” she asked.
“If you’re not busy could you fake a note from mom and Dad? Tell the school that I will be viewing the eclipse but my parents want me to do it from a ghost perspective. I have an event in the GZ that I can’t miss but Lancer offered to bump us up a whole letter grade if we need it,” Danny asked her.
“I’ll have it sent to Tucker’s email in thirty minutes. If you need anything just let me know,” she smiled into the phone.
“Thanks, Jazz!” Danny smiled. His sister really was always there for him, even hundreds of miles away at college.
It was forty minutes later that Danny got another call on his phone.
“Hey dude.”
“Hey yourself. Jazz just sent me the file. I have it printed and ready for Lancer’s class tomorrow. Good thinking,” Danny could sense Tucker’s smrik through the phone.
“Yep well if Lancer calls my parents they’ll agree on the spot. I can get Jazz here day of if need be to distract them,” Danny shrugged.
“So did you get your eye problem fixed?’
“Yeah, clockwork did something. It’ll fade by Friday but it’ll fade faster if use my power. It’s some kind of camouflage thing,” Danny shrugged.
“Ight well let’s hope this week goes off without a hitch.”
“I have a feeling it’s going to be quiet,” Danny observed.
True to Danny’s words the week was quiet, when questioned by his friends he shrugged and said the eclipse messes with the ghost. Lancer luckily accepted the letter with no problem and agreed to let Danny write his report on the effect of ghosts and the eclipse.
Friday came too soon and the school year ended.
“Let me know how the school event goes,” Danny waved to his friends.
“Let us know how the GZ event goes!” Sam and Tucker waved by as the three went their separate ways.
Just as Danny returned home he could feel the effects wear off and quickly changed into his ghost form, flying to Phantom’s keep.
“Glad to see you made it Prince,” Dora greeted him.
“Dora you don’t have to call me Prince. Danny is fine,” the half-ghost rolled his eyes as she swatted his arm playfully.
“It is a sign of respect. You are the future king. You should really start acting more like it,” Dora laughed at his groaning.
“He could always start by fixing his posture,” Pandora agreed, entering the room.
“Look I’m standing up straight. Happy?” Danny asked, sass full on in his voice.
“Do not sass the ones who are trying to help you. I do not care to imagine the horror Clockwork has to deal with mentoring you,” she rolled her eyes, a smile never leaving her face.
“Oh it is quite troublesome, but I feel like it is well needed. Daniel is an excellent student,” Clockwork smiled as he floated into the room. “Are you ready to give your speech?”
“I’ve been working on it all week,” Danny assured him, a look of determination on his face.
“We will be in the wings watching. Good luck young sire,” Dora gave a small bow, the others following her lead.
“Not going with them?”
“I am your advisor. I feel it’s best to advise you when I am close by,” Clockwork answered, changing into an old man.
“Thanks, Clockwork. Really,” Danny smiled as the two walked out on stage to see many ghosts ready to celebrate.
“Now announcing Prince Phantom and his royal advisor the Master of Time, ClockWork!” Fright Knight shouted as the two walked out.
“Welcome everyone! We stand on the cusp of a new era. Our civilization, like many before us, has reached a turning point. We have accomplished great things, and yet we know that there is so much more to achieve. As we look to the future, we must ask ourselves: what kind of society do we want to build? What kind of legacy do we want to leave for future generations?
The challenges we face are great, but we are not alone in this endeavor. Our civilization has always been defined by our ability to come together and work towards a common goal. And as we enter this new era, we will need to harness that same spirit of cooperation and collaboration to face the challenges ahead.
One of the key challenges we face is the need to create a more sustainable society. We know that our current way of life is not sustainable in the long term. We must find ways to come together. Stop the senseless violence between communities.
We must also strive to create a more just and equitable society. We cannot continue to allow inequality to persist in our civilization. We must work to dismantle systems of oppression and create a society where everyone has access to the same opportunities, regardless of their background or circumstances.
But above all, as we enter this new era, we must never forget the history that has made us thus far. We must remember that we are not the horrible creatures others tell us that we are. We are powerful, but that does not mean that we have to go down to their level. Entering in this new Era I will protect you and guide you if you choose to have me.
In the end, the success of our civilization will not be measured by our achievements, our fear, or our wealth, but by the impact that we have on the world around us. Let us work together to build a society that we can be proud of, one that reflects the best of our potential. Thank you,” Danny bowed to the crowd as everyone was silenced. Then with a proud smirk, Clockwork raised his staff.
“To Prince Phantom!”
“Prince Phantome!!!” Screams cries, and cheers, came from the ghost as Danny exited and they could see Frostbite walk on stage.
“Now let us celebrate!” The yeti declared as it sounded like a riot was going off.
“That was excellent!” Dora greeted him, pulling him into a hug.
“Thanks I wasn’t really sure about the speech, but it made them happy,” Danny gestured towards the outside.
“Of course. Most of the ghosts never leave the zone and get stuck between battles with more powerful ghosts. You are promising them a place where they will be safe. Compared to the last ruler and what happened when we didn’t have one you are very much needed,” Pandora explained.
“I’m glad you all liked it! Now I was told there was a party?” Danny smiled.
“This way. Your subjects will be happy to have you join them,” Frostbite led the way.
Monday found Danny handing in his essay to Lancer, much longer than the required one page, but it was well worth it to see the look on Lancer’s face. It also made Danny happy that he could return back to his normal freaky powers. Of course, the surge of feeling powerful didn’t really leave him, but a part of him wasn’t bothered.

on the word “begins” —
The usual form in Old English was onginnen, perhaps “to open, open up,” and comparable to OHG in-ginnen “to cut open, open up.” It is odd — unfair? — that “ends” might be a noun, but not “begins.” There is however “The hard begin, that meets thee in the dore” in Spenser’s Faerie Queen (III, iii, 21).
The OED has an obsolete verbal sense “to entrap, ensnare” (here); no surprises in Wright’s English Dialect Dictionary (here).

The Flower Shop Around The Corner (VI)
Part 6 : After The Rain
Here's another chapter! The cloud has passed, now let's get back to something a little sweeter, shall we ;)
I hope you all like this chapter!
Gif not mine
Word Count: 2220
It felt good to have him back into your life. It felt good to be expecting his letter again, and it felt even better to read about his day. It was wonderful to have someone to talk to. Although, if the Wallet Guy was back into your life in a pretty normal pattern, one thing was changing.
Chris Evans.
You had noticed over the past couple of weeks how much your relationship with him had evolved at work. You were actually having full conversations with him without being annoyed. You found out that he was pretty funny, actually. Not a full on funny – not yet – but he was making you smile quite often. He seemed to be a better listener than you had thought too. And he was quite… sweet…
What was happening? Was hell freezing over or something?
Although, Chris and you were merely seeing each other at work. You were becoming almost work-friends, which was much more than what you would have imagined only weeks before.
You were thinking about this change when Chris let himself fall on the chair next to yours at lunchbreak.
"A penny for your thoughts?" he asked with a smile and a curious glint in his eyes, grabbing his fork and studying the piece of meat in his plate with a perplex expression.
"Nothing really, just daydreaming."
"Daydreaming? About what? Or… whom?"
You chuckled.
"It's none of your business."
"Alright, keep your secrets then," he wriggled his eyebrows in a dramatic gesture that had you laughing this time.
Oh good Lord, you were even laughing with him now… you would have to check if pigs might have learned to fly over the last few days.
Meanwhile, Chris was smiling at the sound of your laughter. The sound echoed through his heart spreading warmth like sunshine in summer. The more he learned to know you, the brighter you seemed to become to him. You were solar now. Smiling and laughing, and he had to admit that you were even funny. In some of your deepest conversations, he could recognize Peony in you: in the way you spoke, in the words you chose, in the kindness you showed… Slowly but irrevocably, you and Peony were mingling to become one, the fusion of what he saw as two souls into one more complex being. And the more he knew you, the more he liked what he saw.
Was he on his way into falling for you?
He chose to push the thought away, for now at least. But what could not be delayed any longer was the test he had imagined: for now, you only spoke to each other at work, but what were you like outside? Around a dinner in a nice restaurant, with a beer in your hand at a bar, taking a walk down the Hudson River… what were you like outside the studio? Were you more like Peony then, or were you yet another part of you then?
He took a deep breath, wearing his most casual expression and making sure his tone was calm and nonchalant.
"You know… it's been a tiring week. We've been doing crazy hours and our scenes were quite rough."
"Yes, I guess."
"What about we grab a drink tonight? I've asked a few other people around, and we're already four going out. Would you like to come as well?"
You considered the offer for a moment. You would have been lying if you hadn't admitted that you were rather nervous at the idea of going out with Chris. But then, it was simply to grab a drink with other co-workers, what were the risks?
"Yeah, sure. Why not?" you accepted the offer with a grin.
Chris made a lot of efforts to ignore the way his heart sped up in his chest.
"Great! Great… We'll just leave directly after work, I think. Is that okay?"
"Yes, sure. Perfect."
Chris smiled.
"Perfect…"
------------------------------------------------------------
"You're ridiculous, mate. You realize that you're calling me in the middle of the day, panicked, to ask me advices about Y/N Y/L/N. You're acting like a teenage boy."
"I'm not behaving like a teenage boy, and I just needed to talk about it with someone, because I'm a little… nervous, I guess."
"Nervous? You're panicked."
"I'm not panicked!"
"You are."
"No, I'm not."
Anthony merely chuckled.
"Where are you hiding to make this call anyway? In your trailer?"
Chris fiercely blushed.
"A cupboard," he answered, pushing with the tip of his shoe the bottle of detergent at his feet.
Anthony exploded in laughter, and Chris rolled his eyes, heaving an annoyed sigh.
"Just… you know what? Drop it. I'll manage."
"I'm sorry, man. Go ahead, go ahead, tell me everything."
"Drop it."
"No, no, no. Go ahead," Chris's friend insisted, ceasing his laughing and teasing.
"I'm just… nervous. What if I let something slip? What if everything goes sour? Then what? I'll have lost Peony all over again."
"Chris, that's were you're wrong, buddy. It's not about Peony. It's about Y/N. You have to forget about these letters, cause they won't show you who Y/N truly is. Peony… she's just a fragment, mate. She's not real. Y/N is the real person, she's the complex, filled with paradox being you need to like or dislike. Forget about Peony, and learn about Y/N instead."
Chris remained silent for a moment, letting his friend's words sink in. He could see the truth in his words, but somehow, he just couldn't apply the advice on his life for now. Peony was too much in his thoughts, too present in his heart. She surrounded his whole existence, defined the rhythm of his days, still brought some of the best moments of his days. If you had become solar, Peony was brighter still, an entire galaxy, clouds shining as they gathered and mingled in her shape. He realized then that he didn't only need to know you better and make you brighter, he also needed to give you a chance to eclipse Peony. And for now, this tiny fragment of you outshined too much the rest of the world, to allow him to see you.
"Thank you," he breathed into the phone.
"For tonight, just… have a nice time. Don't overthink things too much. Don't think about how Y/N acts like Peony or differently. Just think about how Y/N acts, and you'll be fine."
"Thank you again. You're rather good at giving advices, have you ever thought about starting a show for broken hearts or something?"
"Very funny. Good luck for tonight."
"Thanks."
Chris hung up and leaned against a shelf covered with bottles behind him, heaving a sigh. He needed to get Peony out of his system, and yet… yet he couldn't stop writing to you and reading your notes, he knew it. He didn't have the strength to do it.
And somehow, deep down, he knew that the reason behind his doubts and difficulties was that he was afraid to lose you completely. At least, if he lost the real you, he would still have Peony. And if he couldn't have all of you, then he would accept all the pieces you would grant him. He realized then that maybe, just maybe, if he liked Peony so much, it was simply because he liked you more.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"Come on, Y/N. Focus! Focus! You're our only chance!"
"Don't stress me out!"
"I'm not!"
"You are! Just shut up!"
"Okay, okay…"
Chris was standing right behind you, staring at the target. You turned between your fingers the last dart in your hand.
If you hit the centre, you and Chris won. Otherwise, you lost. Your fate depended only on this dart.
"You can do it, Y/N, come on."
You took a couple of deep breaths, raising your hand before you and taking aim. Your hand swung a couple of times before you, and then…
3…
2…
1…
You threw the dart towards the target and…
"YES!"
Chris's shout made you jump a little, but your own joy made you cheer as well instead.
You spun around, and found yourself trapped in a tight hug as he lifted you up and made you twirl, making you laugh harder.
"WE WON! You're brilliant!"
You merely laughed in response. Eventually, he stopped making you spin, and his eyes met yours as more laughter passed your lips and his. Suddenly, you were both very aware of how close you two were…
Your breath got stuck in your throat, but you didn't let go of your hold on Chris's upper arms. You could feel the muscles tense and flex under your fingers. Your chest was pressed against his, and as air left and entered your lungs the feeling only increased. Why did you notice so many silly details? Like… how blue his eyes were up close, in the pale light of the crowded pub. How long his eyelashes were… how was it even humanly possible to have eyelashes that long? You noticed the droplets of light caught in his beard, and the way his lips parted slightly… every detail. Why was that?
And as all these questions and acknowledgements passed through your mind, Chris's brain had gone completely blank. He could use his sense, and he reacted to them, but he had no way to comprehend what was happening. There were feelings and chemical reactions to them, but no analyses. How could he? His entire body was on overload.
He lost himself in your stare as if falling in an endless, beautiful pit. He was aware of each detail of your fingers upon his upper arms, even though the contact was only through his T-shirt. He didn't dare to move his arms that were still wrapped around you, he was too much aware of how perfectly you fitted in his arms. Your breath bloomed against his face and brushed his lips, making him barely able to breathe himself. The warmth irradiating from your body and passing through him, the feeling of your heart beating against him… His heart was surely going to explode. He could barely breathe.
Slowly – too slowly for it not to make the air between the two of you get filled with electricity- he put you down. An invisible tension appeared between you, the kind that prevented any of you to break eye-contact. At one point, Chris wondered if time had merely slowed down, or if his movements truly were too slow. But it didn't really matter. After all, even if he had wanted to, he couldn't move faster. It was already requiring an extraordinary effort from him to summon the sufficient will to gently put you down to the ground.
He kept his arms wrapped around you for a long while, and you didn't make any movement to break free. You could feel his hear beating against yours, almost in sync despite their crazy speed. There was this tension, this electricity buzzing through the air between the two of you. The crowded pub was filled with noises, and yet none of you could notice any of the energy and life going on around you.
Chris caught himself right before he would lean forward to kiss you. He glimpsed at your lips and realized then that in the dim light of the pub, you were so absolutely gorgeous. There was something about you that made him forget the entire universe. Something in your eyes that captured his soul and he didn't recall having ever felt this way with anyone else. Somehow, you were outshining everyone else.
Even Peony…
He glimpsed a second time at your lips, and God… did he want to kiss you… He wondered how it would feel like, what would your lips taste like, how would your hair run through his fingers… How would it feel to kiss you?
He wanted to kiss you so badly… and finally the truth hit him. It caught the air in his lungs like a punch in the stomach, it shook his entire being to his soul.
He was falling for you…
He had kept his doubts until this very evening, but there he was now, holding you with his heart ready to explode, and there was no denial possible this time. He had not even thought about Peony this evening, he had considered only you. That was it, you were outshining even her. Because right now you were funny and gentle and simply such a wonderful person to be around. And he was ready to fall for you, the real you, the complete version of you, instead of the pieces he could see through Peony.
Should he try to kiss you? Damn, he wanted to do so so badly, but he didn't want to make you feel uncomfortable, and you were still working together, and you were just starting to not hate him anymore… should he kiss you?
But you finally pushed him away gently, and he snapped out of the trance he seemed to have entered. Red shades coloured his cheeks, and he let go of you in hurried movements before uncomfortably passing a hand through his hair.
"Well done… with the game," he gave you a shy smile.
"Thank you, partner," you joked, making him laugh.
You turned to grab your drink, and he admired how the light embraced your form, how your lips curved in a little smile, how your fingers embraced the cool glass…
He couldn't refrain a discreet sigh. He was falling hard for you… but could you fall for him too?

The Dormant Beast - Jongho (4)
Read Part 3 HERE
Part: 4 of ?
Idol: Jongho of ATEEZ
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Friends to Lovers
Word Count: 4,028 (I was on a ROLL, baby)
Warnings: Slight prejudice and bullying (non-racial and it’s not body shame either), swearing and shit, Mild name-calling, MC is a Black Female
A/N: I use certain names in this fic that are meant to be similar to real people. It’s just to add to the whole “post-human race.” For example, if this story takes place AFTER the human race expired, it wouldn’t make sense that someone like Lizzo to exist, right? Also, I wanted to change it up bc it’s fun lol. Anyways, Enjoy!
Jongho stood outside the restaurant, annoyed and tapping his foot rapidly against the pavement.
“Crescent would never be this late.” He huffed, glancing at his watch. How did he wind up in a date with Desire? Glad you asked.
The afternoon of Crescent’s attack on Rory, Jongho walked up to his locker to put his books away for the day. The minute he opened it, a letter slipped out. Opening it, he smiled, noticing Crescent’s loopy handwriting.
Can’t walk home together today. Decided to skip town for a while. Please, don’t look for me. Don’t stop by the house either. I asked my parents to keep my whereabouts a secret. I’m sorry, Jongie. It’ll only be a few days max. I just need to clear my head on things. Shit’s getting too crazy. I won’t be alone, Clips is coming with.
P.S. à You should go on the date with Desire. It’ll do you some good to be around someone that isn’t me. Plus, I need something funny to look forward to when I get back.
Love,
Crescent
Jongho’s smile dropped, furrowing his eyebrows. What did she mean don’t look for her? Where was she going? Why couldn’t he come?
Against her wishes, Jongho sped to her house. The door swung open before he even got a chance to knock.
“Crescent owes me five bucks.” Lunar said, stepping out onto the porch. “She had faith that you wouldn’t come looking for her at least until tomorrow. I knew better.” He sat on the porch swing.
“Of course I’d come. She’s my-”
“Your best friend, which is code for the love of your life?” Lunar glanced up, amused by Jongho’s frozen expression. “I was your age once too, you know.” He said, patting the porch swing.
“I met Solar in high school. A little late compared to you and Crescent, but that didn’t make the feelings any less real.” He said as Jongho sat down. “And when you look at Crescent, you know what I see? I see the same way I looked at Solar all those years ago. That look of longing, wanting what you couldn’t have.”
“What was wrong that you couldn’t be with Mrs. Moon?”
“…She was already married.”
“What? But you said you were in high school?”
Lunar shrugged. “It was a different time back then. When it came to marriage, it was aura over age. This guy with a super-strong aura, an elephant or something, came to her house one day. Asked for her hand in marriage, he had seen her walking to and from school and wanted her for his wife.”
“And her parents just accepted some random guy who had seen her on the street leaving a high school?” Jongho asked incredulously.
“Yes, but please remember it was a different time. Beliefs were different, and because of it, people got away with a lot of things. Of course, he had to prove he was the aura he said he was, as well as proof he could care for her and other things.”
Jongho nodded. “So, if she was married, how did you end up together?”
Lunar smiled. “We started as friends. We didn’t realize when it became more. One minute it was innocent study dates, and the next we were sneaking around behind the bookcases. Word got out that I was getting too close for comfort, and her husband wasn’t pleased. He challenged me to battle, confident that a hyena had no chance against an elephant. Well, he was right. I was beaten to a pulp. He told Solar to follow him; they were going home.”
“And then?” Jongho asked, fully engrossed in the story.
“She told him no. She didn’t want to go with him. He said she had to; those were the rules, after all. She asked him what would be the point if everyone knew she wasn’t happy. She was clearly not in love with him. She stated that he should fight for someone that cared about him. Which is what I had done. So, though it took some time, they divorced and parted ways. Divorces weren’t as accepted back then, so her family shunned her, closing her out. Embarrassed that she would divorce an elephant for a measly hyena. My parents received backlash for the whole situation as well, so they wanted nothing to do with me. We did odd jobs on the weekends, sometimes living out of motels to make ends meet. To the outside world, it seemed we had nothing. But to us, we had everything. We had each other. We graduated high school, moved here to Strongville. We had a small wedding, only inviting what few friends we had. We got steady jobs, putting ourselves through college. Months after graduation, we had Eclipse. Then came Crescent. The whole point of telling you this, Choi, is that when you want something, no matter how unattainable it may seem, you’ve gotta try. There will be obstacles. There might be consequences. Even times when it seems like you’ll never come out on top. But love will always prevail.”
Jongho sat in silence, absorbing the information. “So, that’s why Crescent never mentions her grandparents. But, Lunar, Mrs. Moon and you were on the same page back then. What do I do if Crescent and I don’t see eye to eye? I’ve tried expressing my feelings before, and she shuts me down before I even get a word out. She’s always giving me excuses for why I can’t like her, whether it’s my parents, or her aura, or the stupid hierarchy. What if she doesn’t like me back?”
Lunar chuckled. “Trust me. You don’t have to worry about that.” He said, remembering the constant teasing from Eclipse. “Crescent’s her father’s daughter. Stubborn and stuck in her ways and opinions. But if anyone can get through to her, it’s you. Don’t give up on her just yet.”
Jongho shook his head. “I wouldn’t give up on her for the world.”
“I knew you’d say that.” Lunar smiled. “So, get outta here. She’ll be okay. She has two auras, and that’s two more than she’s had all her life. Let her sort things out. She’ll be back. She can’t go too long without ‘Jongie’.” He said, repeating the nickname in a mocking tone.
“Oh, and Jongho,” Lunar called out before heading inside.
“Yeah?” Jongho responded from the walkway.
“Have fun on your date.” Lunar winked, closing the door swiftly.
Just when Jongho registered what Lunar had said, his phone rang. The contact was listed as “Don’t Answer.”
“Hello?”
“Jongho! Honey, is everything alright? I got a frantic call from Crescent. She didn’t say much but told me to call you. Did you have to talk to me?”
Jongho sighed. Of course Crescent would call Desire, knowing he wouldn’t do it himself.
“Yeah, actually. Are you doing anything Friday?”

Now here he was, dressed uncomfortably in a dress shirt and pants with his ash-colored hair gelled back, standing outside a restaurant where the prices were bigger than the portions, waiting for Desire, who was 20 minutes late.
Just when Jongho had lost all hope, Rory’s Lamborghini Veneno pull up to the curb. Desire’s Giuseppe heels clicked onto the pavement, her emerald green dress contrasting with her fire-red hair. Her smile didn’t match up with Jongho’s grimace.
“Have fun, you two!” Rory called out, raising his eyebrows in amusement at Jongho’s expression before speeding down the avenue.
“I told you to be here at 4:30 because the reservation was for 6:00. It’s 6:45.” He deadpanned.
“I’m so sorry, sweetie! I was going to make it on time, I swear but, then I couldn’t decide between the red clutch or the black clutch. The red goes with my hair, but the black goes with my shoes. So, I brought both!” She said. She squeezed Jongho’s hand when he didn’t react. “C’mon, I’m here now! Let’s go in.”
They entered and were immediately recognized and seated despite the reservation having passed. The waiter sped to their table.
“Good evening, may I start you both off with some drinks?” He asked, flipping open his notepad. “Our special of the night is the Moet & Chandon Nectar Rose, which has been chilled on ice.”
“Ooou, that sounds good, let’s have that!” Desire said, opening the food menu.
The waiter nodded, turning to Jongho. “And for you, sir? The same?”
Jongho gave the man a baffled look. “You realize we’re like 16, right?”
“Oh, Jongho honey, age restrictions don’t apply to us! We’re the future Duke and Duchess!” Desire laughed, shaking her head. “If it’s your first time drinking, I’d suggest not ordering tequila. I made that mistake last year and between you and me, I can’t remember much about that night.” She shrugged.
“So, just because we’re a little stronger than others, rules and law don’t apply to us? Then what’s the point?” Jongho sighed. “Sprite, please.”
“Are you sure, Sir? If not the Moet, we have other options that might better satisfy your palette. A Chateau, perhaps? Maybe even our prized possession, the Dom Perignon? I can guarantee our batch is the most aged, dating back to human times.” The waiter pressed, surprised at the fact that Jongho wasn’t jumping at the opportunity to drink the way Desire was.
Jongho gave him a tight smile. “Sprite.”
“Very well, then. I’ll be back with your drinks and will take your course orders when I return.”
“I can give you some of my glass to try if you’d like? That way you don’t have to order something you’re not sure you’ll like?” Desire offered.
“No thanks, I’ll wait till 21 like everyone else.” Jongho said, opening the menu. “What are you having?”
“A garden salad.”
Jongho looked up at her. “Is that it?”
“Oh, you’re right. It’s my cheat day. I’ll order some shrimp on the side.”
“Cheat day? You work out?”
“Oh no, I’m on a diet because I bought this dress and they didn’t have it in my size so I’m gonna lose weight to wear it.”
Jongho furrowed his eyebrows. “Aren’t you already pretty slim? How much smaller can the dress be? Why couldn’t you just get the dress in your size from the portal?”
“Ugh, no! Only lower auras use the portal. High auras like us should use storefronts. Plus, I’m a 4 and the dress is a 2, so it should fit pretty soon.”
In midst of the technological advances that caused auras to become a thing, the internet evolved into the Portal. The Portal allowed for a more intimate internet experience. For instance, one who may be shopping for clothes or shoes could choose to have their order shipped to their home or a storefront like in human times, or they could choose the Portal, which opens up a large egress on location. This allowed the person to then reach in and grab their item from inside the threshold. It was popular amongst the lower auras who were intimidated from the possibility of running into higher auras and to avoid higher auras from snatching things right out of their carts, which was a common occurrence. Being friends with Crescent, Jongho knew the ins and outs of the Portal and even frequented it himself.
“There’s nothing wrong with the Portal. You can shop right from home, in your pajamas or the middle of the street and get your things right then and there.”
“Exactly, but higher auras are to be seen. Not hidden away at home.” Desire said, as the waiter came back.
“Still better than starving yourself into oblivion,” Jongho said, shrugging. “Are we ready to order?” he asked her.
“Yes! I’ll have a garden salad, hold the dressing, croutons and cheese. And an order of steamed shrimp, hold the cocktail sauce.”
The waiter nodded, turning to Jongho.
“I’ll have the top sirloin steak with roasted potatoes.”
“Will that be medium-rare?” The waiter asked, writing everything down.
“Uh no, well done, please.”
Desire scrunched up her face. “Well done? You’re killing the animal all over again, Jongho.”
“Well…it’s gonna be on my plate so, I hope it’s dead.”
“Where’s the flavor in that, Jongho?”
“The seasoning? Anyways, sirloin, well done, end of discussion. We were already late so I’m pretty hungry. Can we move this along?”
“Yes, right away, sir! Your orders will be expedited.” The waiter said, rushing off to the kitchen.
“Did you learn to eat well-done steak with Crescent? Even your parents don’t eat it like that.” Desire asked.
“How’s that store you opened last year doing, Desire? Is it seeing profit?”
“You’re changing the subject. You don’t wanna talk about her?”
“I finally took you out on a date, which is what you’ve wanted me to do for the past three years, so I’m confused as to why you would,” Jongho said, twirling his salad fork coolly. “So, about that store…”
Desire sighed, sitting up in her seat. “It’s going well, a lot of sales in-store and online, we received a purchase from Teyoncé. You know, the singer with the eagle aura?”
Jongho nodded, impressed. “I’m sure you’ll have members of the Teapot flooding in from all over to buy your products now. They idolize her so much, they follow every trend she portrays.”
“I’m excited. If we continue selling at this rate, we can open up another storefront.”
“Do you offer Portal?” Jongho asked as their food was placed in front of them. He thanked the waiter, cutting into his steak.
“Why would I do that?” Desire asked, annoyed that they were once again discussing Portal.
“Well, you’re targeting the Teapot. You know how many fans Teyoncé has? She comes from a long line of performers, starting from her great-great-great-grandmother. She has fans everywhere, from Strongville to Freehold to Cherrynight Valley. Surely, you can’t expect everyone to come to one store in the middle of Strongville?”
“Anybody who’s somebody will make it. Those who can’t will miss out.” Desire said.
“And the one missing out on money will be you. Exclusivity is for companies with seniority, like the brand on your feet. People are gonna see what it takes to even buy from your store and give up when you can easily offer Portal and have your brand all over the world. Or is Portal beneath you?”
“I just don’t think someone of my caliber should have to settle or beg for sales by lowering my standards.” She retaliated.
“What if Crescent was a fan? She can’t just walk into your store, especially with the way you’ve treated her and her reputation amongst your friends, also your fault by the way. Someone like her would need Portal. Imagine what would happen if word were to get out that you don’t even accommodate for people right here in your town? That’s the thing, though. When you become an entrepreneur, you have to be money hungry. Imagine all the sales you could be making this very minute if you activated Portal.”
The conversation died down, the pair eating in silence. Jongho set his utensils down, finishing his plate rather quickly. He sighed. He’d definitely need to stop at Patty Queen on his way home. The portion was nowhere near enough; he would need at least a burger to be full.
“What do you see in her?” Desire asked suddenly.
“Huh?” Jongho asked. He had heard her but wanted to buy himself some time before having to answer.
“Do you know how much I’ve done to catch your attention? I wear the best outfits, watch my figure, always have my hair done. I’ve wanted to dye my hair so many times, you know why I never did? When we were younger, and I was getting picked on for how bright red my hair is, you defended me. Told me that it suited me, and that I didn’t have to change it. So now, even when I want to change it, I don’t. Because you liked it the way it is.”
“That’s the problem, Desire. You’re always doing things to impress me. Impress others. Haven’t you ever thought I’d like you much more if you were just yourself? That’s what I like about Crescent, to answer your question. Someone living without an aura for that long, especially being scrutinized by the likes of you, would’ve broken down at some point. Not Crescent. She stood her ground, even when she knew you could crush her. She’s seen as weird for liking things like true crime and poetry, but that doesn’t stop her from watching documentaries or geeking over underground poets. She’s unapologetically herself, always. Doesn’t mean she’s perfect, but she’s real.”
Desire laughed humorlessly. “She’s got you wrapped around her little finger. Pathetic.”
“Now I’m pathetic?”
“YES. You’re pathetic! You could have this entire town eating out of the palm of your hand. You could be getting bottle service, Ferragamo shoes, thousand-dollar threads, the best of the best! But you walk around in Converse and Levi’s just like that inferiority! You’re sitting here drinking a Sprite when you were offered Dom Perignon. You’re eating burnt meat and running the school passively when you can easily be treated like a King with me by your side. But instead, you treat everyone kindly like they were your equal. All because of that chick. What’s she got that I don’t? It’s certainly not money or strength. I’m tired of being overlooked by her. I’m so sick of it. Grow up, Jongho.”
Jongho stared her in the eye, silent at first. Then, what started as a chuckle turned into a full-on cackle.
“What’s so funny?” Desire asked.
“You know, it’s so fitting that you’re a wolf aura. I don’t think I’ve ever met a bigger bitch.” He said, taking out $200 from his wallet and throwing it onto the table. “Tell the waiter he can keep the change. I’ll see my pathetic ass out.” He said, getting up.
“Oh, before I go.” He turned back around. “I already wasn’t interested in you romantically, but after today, you can forget about this whole Duke and Duchess narrative. I wouldn’t marry you even if there was a gun to my head. And all that whining you just did? The one that has growing up to do is you.” He said, walking out of the restaurant to his car.
“Crescent, Crescent, Crescent.” He sighed, unlocking his car door. “You owe me big time.”

Meanwhile, Crescent panted, leaning against a tree. She’d been training with Eclipse all day long, same as she’d been doing since Wednesday.
“Come on, Crescent. Again.” Eclipse said, sweat dripping down her neck and into her sports bra.
“I told you, Clips. I can’t activate the tiger aura on command.”
“And I told you, AGAIN. In order to activate your aura, you must become one with the animal. You have to feel it. You can’t just clap or jump and become a tiger or a seal. It has to stimulate your senses.”
Crescent sighed, momentarily regretting bringing Eclipse along. The older girl had done nothing but boss her around day in and day out, attempting to train the younger girl aurally.
Crescent closed her eyes, envisioning a seal in the middle of the ocean. She felt a rush of warmth against the frigid breeze.
Lunar and Solar owned a log cabin on the outskirts of town, at the beginning of the woods. It was far away enough that Jongho couldn’t sniff them out, but close enough to rush back home in case of an emergency.
Crescent opened her eyes, the usual dark brown replaced by a dark abyss, similar to that of a seal.
“Good,” Eclipse said. “Now, the tiger.”
Crescent took a deep breath, envisioning a tiger in a vast grassland. But, just like all the times before, the tiger was laying down in the grass, fast asleep. Nothing Crescent did woke it up.
She shouted in frustration. She envisioned it perfectly. What was she doing wrong?
“Okay, let’s take a break. Maybe it’s having an off day. Could it be the climate?” Eclipse asked, taking a seat next to Crescent. “But, tigers and cheetahs are kind of similar, and I can activate my aura out here just fine. But it’s okay. We’ll figure it out. Together.” Eclipse pulled Crescent in for a hug.
Just then, Eclipse’s phone rang. Crescent rolled her eyes. Her phone had been going off nearly every hour since they had reached the cabin.
“Can you stop answering your booty calls? Just for ONE night?” Crescent sighed.
Eclipse smirked. “Why? Am I making you miss Jongho? Maybe he can come over after that date you forced him to go on. I heard from Rory he took her out after all. Still don’t know why you made him take another girl out.” She said, typing something into her phone.
Crescent huffed, looking away at the mention of Jongho. The truth is, she wanted to be sure Desire didn’t stand a chance. She felt that Jongho never gave much thought to the idea of him and Desire because Crescent was always around. So, she decided that isolating herself and putting them both in a situation without her would be the only way to know for sure where Jongho stood. It was a weird, convoluted plan, but Crescent wanted to be positive her feelings wouldn’t be met with heartbreak. If she returned and they were together and in love, she’d keep her feelings to herself and move on. If not, she’d confess once and for all.
“Okay…don't be mad.” Eclipse said, pulling Crescent out of her thoughts.
“No. You’re NOT leaving me here alone again tonight.” Crescent glared at her sister.
“It won’t be the whole night! Jared is a jackrabbit aura, I’ll be back in like an hour tops! And that’s if I stroll!”
“Eclipse, gross! And still, no!” Ever since Eclipse turned 18, Crescent was plagued with hearing about her sexual endeavors with nearly half the graduating class. And, being the blunt person she was, Eclipse held nothing back. There are people Crescent couldn’t even look in the eye anymore after hearing her sister’s stories.
There was an awkward silence between the two, until Crescent saw the amber glint in Eclipse’s eyes.
“Eclipse, I swear to everything I love-”
Crescent couldn’t even finish her sentence before a gust of wind ran through Crescent’s curly, auburn locks.
“ECLIPSE!” Crescent shouted, smacking her hand against the bench in frustration.
And that’s when she felt it. The tiger suddenly jumped up in her envisioning, running rampant. Crescent took off too, her eyes turning a bright amber. But something was different this time. A cheetah appeared next to the tiger. The two cats ran in unison, their astral projections blooming from Crescent’s chest like sun rays. She had the speed she needed to reach Eclipse, and that she did.
Once she was close enough, she pounced at the older girl, the strength of her tiger aura allowing her to overpower the cheetah aura of her sister.
“Why. Do. You. Keep. Leaving.” Crescent gritted through her teeth.
“Crescent. Your aura activated!” Eclipse exclaimed, completely disregarding her sister’s death mission. “But, how did you catch up to me? Tigers are fast but no way are they fast enough to reach cheetahs.”
Crescent sighed, falling back onto the dirt. “Because I’m using both.”
“Woah, wait, what?” Eclipse asked, puzzled.
“The tiger is awake, and the cheetah is right next to it. They ran together, and that’s how I was able to catch you.” Crescent said, describing the envisioning.
“Crescent, did you just hear yourself? Not only do you have THREE auras, TWO of them work TOGETHER. I’ve heard of multiple aura holders, but never have I ever seen anything like what you just did. Double aura? Dual aura?” Eclipse shook her head. Her phone rang again. She fished it out of her pocket, silencing it.
“So, if not even you know what’s going on with me, what happens next?”
“That’s the scariest part, Cres. For the first time in my life, I don’t know what to tell you.”
Stephie here! Don’t wanna make this longer than it already is, but just checking in. Jongho finally told Desire off, is anyone relieved? Anyways, please look forward to the next chapter. Happy Reading!

You had been calling to meet the queen of the mer-people and you didn’t even realize it. That’s what Eclipse energy is all about, the unexpected. Now that you know to expect the unexpected, you can be aware of the frequency you’re putting out in the world. It makes a big difference. You want to call in a mermaid queen, not a sea monster.
On to the Frequency Report! It’s a prolific week energetically.

Moon goes into Virgo at 9:25 pm
There are no aspects today, and the Moon doesn’t go into Virgo until late in the day. Basically, if something strange happens today assign it to the person who decided to be weird. There’s no energy today poking or provoking odd action, it’s just them. Judge accordingly.
Saturday, July 6th
Moon in Virgo
An awesome day to ask for the details to a story with holes that you have questions about. If you’re single, someone whose had you in their sites for awhile may ask you out. If you’re taken it’s a nice day to write a letter to your beloved with details about why they make your heart flutter.
Sunday, July 7th
Moon goes void at 9:50 am Moon goes into Libra at 11:07 pm
Alert! Mercury is now Retrograde! Expect to do everything twice. Be flexible with plans. People who usually seem very with it, and in charge have a hard time remembering what they were about to say to you. The energy in the air, charged with Eclipse frequency grows lax and fluid. Do your best to go with the flow rather than fight it. Decide now where you plan to keep your cell phone and keys all month, and don’t change that spot!

July 6, 2019 - My Farewell Love Letter to Santiago, Chile
It has taken me a while to put this post up on my blog. I’m not sure if this is due to my crazy busy schedule now that I am home or due to being in denial about the fact that I’m no longer abroad, but it seems to be six of one and half a dozen of the other.
The week before we started packing our bags, Lisi and I retraced our steps back to all of the spots that turned Santiago into home for us and I photographed her in them on film. I wanted to capture the tumultuous feeling of being alone in a big new place and the growth that came with finding ourselves in it. This country gave me more than I ever could have expected. Below are the pictures from the project, accompanied by the journal entry I wrote on the plane ride home.
So, the day has come. I am sitting on my flight home from Chile, using the pen of the sweet woman next to me, listening to the playlists I made at the beginning, middle, and end of this grand adventure, and reading new Rebecca Solnit words (The Faraway Nearby) to celebrate and understand this beautiful journey. I’m not quite sure how to put it into words, but I suppose I will start by describing what I’ve learned and (as usual) the song and/or Rebecca Solnit quote that solidified it for me. Here is my love letter to the me that I have become here in Chile.
A quote from “The Faraway Nearby” by Rebecca Solnit that summarizes my feelings about Chile’s impact on me is a great place to start:
“I talked about places, about the ways that we often talk about love of place, by which we mean our love for places, but seldom of how the places love us back, of what they give us. They give us continuity, something to return to, and offer a familiarity that allows some portion of our lives to remain connected and coherent... And distant places give us refuge in territories where our own histories aren't so deeply entrenched and we can imagine other stories, other selves, or just drink up quiet and respite. The bigness of the world is redemption. Despair compresses you into a small space and a depression is literally a hollow in the ground. To dig deeper into the self, to go underground, is sometimes necessary, but so is the other route of getting out of yourself, into the larger world, into the openness in which you need not clutch your story and your troubles so tightly to your chest. Being able to travel both ways matters, and sometimes the way back into the heart of the question begins by going outward and beyond. This is the expansiveness that sometimes comes literally in a landscape or that tugs you out of yourself into a story.”
I deeply feel this quote. She perfectly put into words why I not only wanted but needed to come to Chile.
Times/places this feeling was most present:
- looking out my window at the cordillera my first morning and the fresh new feeling
- laying in the sand of the Atacama with Tori, Josh, Lucas, and Eliza watching the clearest stars I had ever seen
- in the metro surrounded by strangers
- the first day I sat in Cafe Colmado and felt as though I had found home again
- walking in the rain at the end of the W trek in Torres del Paine
- staring up at Mount Aconcagua in Argentina
- watching the sunset in the Concon Dunes with Chris while “Inside Out” by Spoon played
- staring down from Huayna Picchu at Machu Piccu
- staring down into Devil’s Throat in Iguazu
- petting the labrador on the beach in Rapa Nui
- watching the solar eclipse from the Elqui Valley
What I learned here in Chile:
1. I am strong beyond measure. I have such a deep sense of self now and I am deeply proud to be who I am. I’m happy with the me that developed here. I think this may be the first time I can say that I unabashedly love myself.
2. Change and new environments are good. They are critical to growth.
3. Every moment of my past life was crucial in getting me to where I am now. This includes the things that used to make me bitter. I have no bitterness left in my body. Only love and hope for the future.
4. Not everything is easy. But everything can be overcome.
5. You will find new kinds of love in every person you meet. Every moment of this love is worth it.
6. You could die in a plane crash or fall off of a mountain at any moment. There is no productivity in regret.
Songs of Chile:
Sisters of the Moon by Fleetwood Mac: I developed a much deeper love for the sun and moon and stars and their influence on the natural order of things here in Chile. These ideas now ground me in a very special way.
Drops of Jupiter by Train: This song is an embodiment of my journey. I feel as though I am the woman being described and that the feelings expressed are now what I expect from those I love. I want to walk across the sun and surround myself with people who encourage me to do so.
No Plan by Hozier: This song makes me think of the first bus I took to Valparaiso. The idea that this semester would take whatever path it found and that I was absolutely okay with that exists in this song.
World on Fire by NOAH: This was a lesson that the songs you need to hear can come from the most unexpected people, as it was sent to me randomly by an acquaintance on instagram. A symbol of my world that is beautifully on fire, and that those that join must burn with me.
Wide Open Spaces by the Dixie Chicks: The exact sentiment of the Rebecca Solnit quote. I needed the physical movement and new hardship and distance to finalize my process of moving on beyond an old me.
Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine: Happiness hit me and it still can and still does all the time.
Back in My Body by Maggie Rogers: You can lose yourself, but sometimes you just need a certain spark to find yourself again. My spark was Chile.
I am deeply happy with these past six months. I feel that this experience helped me grow in such a necessary way. I am ready to return to normal Michigan life. I got the mental health reset and adventure break I needed, and I’m ready to return to an intense pursuit of my dreams.
I am who I am. I’m proud of that. I’ll take me as I am. They’ll take me as I am. If they don’t, I leave. I’ll never turn down an adventure like this ever again without a really good reason.

How do I define a magic system, so it doesn’t seem like a god in a machine type of thing?
Rules, limits, consequences – and don’t make the story’s resolution pivot on magic. (That last one is probably the most crucial, really.)
You don’t have to explain the rules in the story, but they must be somewhat intuitive by virtue of consistency. If a character can only do X magic when it’s night, make very clear it’s night, the stars are visible, and never, ever break that rule. Some readers will miss it, some will put the clues together, but you’ll write with an assurance that will make pretty much all of them roll with the system as internally logical, just on gut instinct.
Limits are something that tends to get explained, because it’s useful for adding tension. Although you might not want to do a hard system (hard as in outlined and nailed down with very specific rules and limits; Sanderson’s novels are entirely hard magic vs Tolkien’s novels are soft magic), it’s still good to elucidate the limits so readers can get worried.
A limit doesn’t always have to be explained, but like rules, it should be implied by context. It’s like… we know from the real world about how fast a given kind of horse can go, so if a horse is written going twice that fast, some readers will call foul. And even people who don’t know horses will give you the side-eye if you have the horse running for days on end without rest (unless you have some kind of worldbuilding detail to handwave that).
So, a rule is what you can do, and a limit is how much you can do — and consequences are what happens if you do everything right, everything wrong, or something you shouldn’t, or do more than the limits say you’re allowed to do. Consequences will vary based on the situation and context, but they should always be present.
Consequences are simply the cost of doing a thing (anything, regardless of value or intent), and the cost depends on the metaphor you’re using to conceptualize the magic. If you think of magic like technology, well, there’s a cost in the time to learn it, and a cost in terms of what it, well, actually costs to purchase. But you don’t feel physically exhausted after using your phone, I mean, you might, but that’s not inherent to the phone.
If your metaphor is that magic is like running, then you’d have a physical cost like feeling drained or getting shin-splints, but you probably wouldn’t have a cost in terms of learning to put one foot in front of the other really fast.
My favorite metaphor for magic is treating it like a complex area of study. It takes concentration, checking your work, and the ability to think logically and clearly. You might have eye strain, a headache, or just feel dull-minded after an hour or more hammering at an equation. You won’t necessarily have a cost in outright physical exhaustion, and the monetary cost might be little more than the effort of getting a library card.
There are two reasons for consequences. One is that we’re dealing with a gaming-influenced genre, and a game gets boring if someone can power up to the point they can destroy worlds without breaking a sweat. Just like you’d expect a character to get exhausted if they push past their physical limit, consequences penalize them for pushing past a magical limit.
The other reason is that consequences are the best way to introduce (or raise) stakes. Take the rules (ie, only magic at night) and the limits (ie, cannot do it for more than ten minutes): what happens if someone tries to do magic for twenty minutes? Lose their voice, or hallucinate? What if they do magic during the day? Maybe they have nightmares? What if they do magic for longer than ten minutes and it’s during the day? They get all of the above plus go bald?
And then you put the character in situations where magic — during the day, for ten-plus minutes — is their only option for getting themselves or someone else out alive. If you’ve done your groundwork, the reader will be on pins and needles, knowing the character is choosing a path that’s going to have severe consequences.
Of course, then you do need to impose those consequences — or find some clever loophole in the rules and limits. Frex, a solar eclipse is one of the oldest ways around ‘only happens at night,’ but hey, it works, and it’s observing the letter of the law: the sun is gone, ergo, it’s not-day.
The last one is the biggest, and it’s one of the reasons authors like Sanderson rely on hard magic. It’s a lot easier for the reader to visualize (and recognize) the validity of those loopholes if they have a fairly solid idea of how the magic system works.
If, say, magic is like water, and the story consistently shows magic acting like water, the reader won’t see it as a deus ex machina but as a clever loophole to have the protagonist use magic that has the properties of ice. We know ice = water, so the final resolution to defeating the bad guy doesn’t violate our understanding of the metaphor.
If you look at older fantasy works (Tolkien being the biggest name, of course), the magic is usually soft. From start to finish, exactly what Gandalf can and can’t do, or how much he can do, isn’t explained (and I should note that he doesn’t do a great deal of it, either, which makes it harder because there’s no laundry list to derive rules or limits).
However, the pinnacle of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings isn’t magic at all. In one, it’s a man shooting an arrow at a dragon; the other, it’s three hobbits in a volcano, and one falls in. (Note: there is an extremely subtle magic going on there, that’s foreshadowed quietly and explained very clearly, and that final showdown is internally consistent with the explanation given.) For the most part, though, the resolution comes from reasonable actors and their believable actions, so it doesn’t require we know more about the magic than we’ve previously been told.
If you feel the impulse when writing the resolution to have another character exclaim, “I didn’t know you could do that!” and the protagonist say in awe, “gee, I didn’t know, either,” you’ve just instinctively lampshaded your own deus ex machina. What you want is a surprise not for the unexpected but for the obvious, once the characters (and reader) have hindsight. Of course water has more than just its fluid state! The magic’s not been bent out of shape; we just hadn’t considered all the possible implications; now that we realize that, it’s obvious that was the best way to defeat the Big Bad.
That said, one of the most satisfying resolutions (admittedly also harder, but that’s what makes it satisfying) is when you have magic throughout a story… and the resolution is entirely independent of magic. In other words, if the reader hadn’t been so focused on the world’s rules and limits around magic, they could’ve realized every ingredient was right there for an incendiary flash-device that would blind everyone and allow the good guys to get away.
Granted, that’s a lot harder, because that means you have to come up with a way to get out of a (hopefully) really sticky and intense set of dire straits without being able to use Stuff You Made Up. Basically, you went through all the work of setting up this convenient system… and then setting it aside for the harder work of characters rolling up their sleeves and wading into the fight.
As a good example of that kind of magic-is-everywhere except the resolution, get a copy of Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers. There’s an anime version of the first light novel, from a few years ago, but the novels have been translated up through volume 6. Yamagata is an author who writes phenomenally tight stories; every single word and detail is a clue.
It starts off with a very D&D-like premise: six heroes are mystically chosen via a tattoo that appears on them, and they must journey across the land to fight the oncoming evil. The six meet up at a temple, and from there they’ll set out to battle. Except there’s two problems: one, a barrier’s suddenly appeared, locking them all in, and two, there’s seven of them, not six.
It’s basically a locked-room mystery, filled with magic and the usual tropes and a few totally unexpected twists that in hindsight were laid out perfectly. At least for the anime, rewatching meant catching a dozen or more clues in every episode, even in throwaway lines, and I’m told the light novels are all that times ten — and the resolution never lies in magic. It lies in something in the real world, some facet of geography or climate or physics.
That takes a lot of work, and it’s really a story where you have to work backwards from the end, to make sure every clue is laid down but just enough obscured by various red herrings. When the story makes sense backwards – each clue leads to another – then you’re ready to tell it forward. Hard, but boy is it satisfying to get to that conclusion.

The Seven Liberal Arts
March 26, 2015JoeDubs, Natural Philosophy
The seven liberal arts are the disciplines of study that the Pythagoreans taught in their mystery schools. They’re the subjects or skills, that in classical antiquity were considered essential for a free person to cultivate to gain a solid foundation of their physical reality.
(Latin: liberalis, “worthy of a free person”)
The Trivium is made up of Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. But not exactly in the sense of the words. Grammar is information we gather, the “Who, What, When, and Where”. Logic is the processing of that data and attempt to make sense of it. It’s our reason and understanding. Logic answers”Why”. Rhetoric is the applying of knowledge to gain wisdom. Rhetoric answers the “How”.
The Seven Liberal Arts: The Occulted(Hidden) System for Understanding Reality
The 7 Liberal Arts
The Trivium: (tri for three)
Grammar (Who, What, When, Where)
Logic (Why)
Rhetoric (How)
The Quadrivium (quad for four)
Number
Geometry (Number in Space)
Music (Number in Time)
Astronomy (Number in Space and Time)
We use our five senses (sight, sound touch, smell, taste), utilizing the Trivium as a method for discerning our own epistemological truths.
It is by our nature that we search for the truth. We desperately seek to understand our world and how it all works. In our attempt it’s important not to put our logic in front of our grammar. The order of the Trivium is very important. We shouldn’t make a decision about something (Logic: Why), before we’ve gathered all the facts on the subject (the Who, What,When, Where). Academia, politicians, science, medicine, and the mainstream media all make this fundamental mistake.
For instance there’s a lot of evidence to merit the existence of telepathy, but since scientists already “know” that’s impossible, the evidence is simply ignored. Mainstream science puts their cart before their horse, making the critical error of forming their beliefs before all the evidence is looked at.
We use our five senses and the Trivium to understand the world around us, while making sure to recognize and reject logical fallacies and other flaws in reasoning. We form our own subjective truth utilizing the Trivium as a way of striving toward the Universal Truth, oft times examining the Quadrivium, in an attempt to better understand our self and our surroundings. We may never know the whole truth(The Universal Truth), but we can attempt to gain all the gnosis in the ‘akashic records’ by using this system.
There is much knowledge hidden into the geometry of the Pythagoras’ first triplet.
The Pythagorean 3-4-5 Triangle is a good symbol to conceptualize the Trivium, Quadrivium, and our Five Senses. 3,4, and 5 are the first numbers that combine to form the first so called ‘Pythagorean Triple‘, which obeys the rule ‘A squared plus B squared equals C squared'(High school geometry did come in handy after all!).
The physical sizes of Earth and Moon encode the 3-4-5 triangle, which itself also encodes Phi, and therefore encodes life. From our perspective here in Earth, the Sun is oddly the same exact size in the sky as our Moon. This fact is proven every time there is a solar eclipse. This cosmological trinity fits nicely with the 3-4-5 model in their amount of letters in English.
The Platonic Solids
Like our five senses there are five Platonic solids, each of which is made up of shapes that have 3, 4, or 5 sides. The tetrahedron is made up of 4 triangles(three sided). The octahedron, 8 triangles. The icosahedron has 20 triangles. The cube is composed of 6 squares(four sided) and the dodecahedron is made of 12 pentagons(five sided). Three-Four-Phive is reflected in the way nature structures itself, based upon the simplest 3-D geometries in our reality.
Platonic Dice
In addition the Platonic solids also encode 3-4-5 in the way the shapes fit together. The tetrahedron, cube, and dodecahedron have three shapes at their corners. The octahedron, four. And the icosahedron has five shapes coming together at every point. Again, the Three-Four-Phiveness, if you will.
We use our five senses to understand the world around us. The Trivium is essential in the process of understanding reality, and must be used in the correct order, Grammar, Logic, then Rhetoric. We must not put logic before grammar. We shouldn’t form an understanding (Logic:Why), before we have all the facts (Grammar:Who, What When, Where). Only then can we begin to describe the How (Rhetoric). Logical fallacies, or flaws in reasoning, must also be recognized and avoided in the attempt to ascertain the Universal Truth.
https://PopUpFallacies.com
It is also important to recognize how the human psyche operates. We are innately resistant to new information that shatters our worldly perspective. We block out information that doesn’t conform to our previously accepted ideology. As Mark Twain put it “It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they’ve been fooled.” This resistance to new information was coined ‘cognitive dissonance‘ by a social psychologist in the 1950’s. It is this aspect of our psyche that dissuades progress in science, medicine, philosophy, and any other characterological structure system.
The Trivium is a method of bypassing the inefficiencies of modern thinking. This classical education has been occulted(hidden) from the people of Earth. It’s quite ironic that the word ‘occult’ has itself been occulted. What better way to hide information than to obscure the very definition of the term? Contrary to popular beLIEf, the word ‘occult” has nothing to do with witchcraft and black magik.
The truth can be occulted (kept hidden) very easily when you condition the people of Earth to viscerally reject it, creating a gag reflex of incoherence just for sounding bat-sh*t crazy. The appeal to authority logical fallacy is particularly useful among the propagandists and ruling elite. When the people blindly trust the experts they bypass critical thinking and often common sense. The experts are seldom correct, but we reinforce our trust in them with more fallacies like the argumentum ad numeram, the appeal to popularity. Just because 97% of scientists, for example, believe in anthropogenic climate change, doesn’t make it sacrosanct and fact.
The more widely accepted a theory is, the less evidence that is required to support it.
“We have to be able to recognize that the attainment of knowledge is the highest labor of mankind. And that the attainment of knowledge is the basis of all philanthropy, the basis of all unselfishness, the basis of all cooperation, and the strengthening of all the constructive emotions of the human being. Therefore to do this, it must be a discipline. And all ancient people set aside certain disciplines for those who wanted to know the truth more than anything else. These they called the mystery schools. The greatest of all wisdom is the love of truth, the love of reality. We’ve had years of years of corrupted wisdom. We’ve head years of years of pseudo knowledge and we’re now very much in need of the real thing.” – Manly P. Hall
“Pythagoras was one of the first teachers to establish a community wherein all the members were of mutual assistance to one another in the common attainment of the higher sciences. He also introduced the discipline of retrospection as essential to the development of the spiritual mind. Pythagoreanism may be summarized as a system of metaphysical speculation concerning the relationships between numbers and the causal agencies of existence.” -Manly P. Hall
“We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society.” – Edward Bernays “The Father of Propaganda”
“The engineering of consent is the very essence of the democratic process, the freedom to persuade and suggest. In practice, the freedoms of speech, press, petition and assembly — freedoms that make engineering consent possible — have tacitly expanded our Bill of Rights to include the right of persuasion,” -Edward Bernays
“It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere” -Voltaire
“I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.” -Harriet Tubman
“If we have no heretics we must invent them, for heresy is essential to health and growth.”
― Yevgeny Zamyatin
“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” -Aristotle
“When you begin to think cosmically you will advance rapidly if your desire is keen. But from the very day you begin you will note increasingly greater power in your work, and still; a greater transformation of your personality. Your capacity for joy and happiness may be measured by your capacity for grief and suffering. All of the knowledge in the world should not dehumanize you. Your knowledge will, however, balance all opposite emotions, and thus enrich you for having experienced them while ignorance will breed fears, worries, superstitions, and other unnatural emotions which act as a terrible burden to your progress. Knowledge of Universal Law will give you courage to transform the greatest defeat that ever threatened you into your greatest victory.”

Mystery Babylon Revisited 01: Notes from the "Dawn of Man"
And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
~ Revelations 17:5-6 KJV
The late Bill Cooper took the time, not only to uncover the Mystery Babylon religion, but to expose it at all costs. It cost him his life, but that is for another story. This series of posts will be an analysis of Bill Cooper's exposé of the mystery schools. I will boiling it down to notes.
Someone has taken the time to preserve the radio broadcasts of Bill Cooper on Youtube, and you are encouraged to speed watch it here:

Unknown if Lucifer is Satan or if they are different.
There is not enough time in one life to learn all that would be needed to know for a full understanding of the Mystery Babylon religion.
It is possible, if you search, to become more "illumined" than those who have followed the mysteries of individual secret societies.
The first UFO sighting, when Lucifer fell from heaven, as described in oral history.
Lucifer, described as the morning star.
Christ is also described as the morning star.
Some of those indoctrinated into the mystery schools believe that Jesus and Lucifer are one and the same.
The ape who struck those bones and learned the use of tools was the first priest of the mystery schools.
These mystery schools were the ones who learned and hid their secrets, what we know as technology, and they used it to control.
The first object of worship in the mystery schools was the Sun; the second: the moon.
Mans newfound intellect set him on a quest, modern mystery schools refer to themselves as the "Order of the Quest".
Science Fiction is used as a decimating force of Science Fact, because the mysteries maintain a lead of more than 100 years of technological advancement.
The next level of man's evolution is consider to be of the number, or level, 666.
Study and make your own discoveries. Add to the discussion and exposure.
Another look at early man from outside of the movie’s context.
Man was alone, subject to the cold and dangerous animal predators.
Man's first enemy was darkness.
Man's greatest gift from the heavens: the Sun.
The first understanding of a birth, life, and death of a deity: the Sun rising, passing over the sky, and setting.
Man noticed the moon also behaved similarly, but the moon assumed the feminine aspect because it reflected (or paled) in the light of its master.
Lucifer is the son of the morning star or the morning star itself.
Note: These are not the beliefs of Bill Cooper. These are the teachings of the Mystery Babylon religion. Bill Cooper believed in the words attributed to Jesus Christ only. Bill Encouraged all to believe what they choose to believe, but he was against these Mystery Schools because of their desire to undermine free will and control others.

Taking A Closer Look: How Our Words Create Our Reality
I have this quasi tarot card deck that is called, “Seeds of Wisdom” by Elka and the purpose of the book and deck is to assist in guidance and growth. There are twelve cards in the deck for the twelve months we have in the year. Each card deals with a different theme.
Today is a full moon+Solar eclipse. I started my period yesterday and I feel VERY connected to just about everything. I feel really in sync. As I cement and hone in on my spiritual practice, I love shuffling both my tarot decks and calling upon the Divine Energy and Spirit Guides to help guide me navigate today’s realm so that I may do my best and feel my best in every moment I experience.
Today is a big day for me. I have two meetings, one in the morning at 10:30 am and the other later at 8:00 pm. In between, I am shopping for my girl’s birthday present+my dad’s bday present, and I have a manifestation class at 6! I’m really looking forward to learning tips and hacks on how to solidify my intention setting and manifesting abilities. I want to really get laser like focus in that class and really figure out the best way for me to learn to manifest what is most important and in alignment with my passions and values.
I woke up this morning and lit up my luxurious, scented candle along with the palo santo and gave thanks for a beautiful morning, and for my beautiful, fulfilled, and blessed life.
The cards that I pulled today are the Eight of Cups and the Creation Card. I feel that I am right on track with where I am meant to be. School is going great, work is fabulous, my personal relationships are taking off, and my social life is awesome. Really, my life isn’t perfect, but it’s magical and amazing for me and I am so happy and grateful I get to wake up every morning and I get to be ME. I’ve been working on reprogramming my mindset, my words, my beliefs, everything that is holding me back I am acknowledging and releasing. I am meant to shine baby, that’s all I know. I am the stuff of stars.
Elka states in this chapter for the Creation card, “use your abundance of life force energy to bring forth life in the form of your heart’s desire. Remember this about creation: it is a messy process. What you are creating may look nothing like your desired outcome. In fact, it may seem like chaos at first. But if your intention is clear and your actions congruent with it, then your creative effort will unfold according to your design. Recognize the power of you words to shape your thoughts into vibrations that interact with the world in a very physical way. Your thoughts are precursors to creation. Your words are vessels of intention. Your actions transform your words into reality, into your Creation.”
I like to visit the word “spelling”. We learn letters, we learn how to formulate them into words, sentences, and turn them into thoughts, ideas, expressions…if you drop the “ing” part however, you are left with the word “spell”. As in, you are writing and casting a S P E L L. I had this aha moment a few years ago and have been working on mastering my speech and thought patterns ever since. Les Brown, one of my favorite motivational speakers has said, “If you don't’ program yourself, LIFE will program YOU.” There’s these two really awesome books that I’ve been reading/listening to that I feel really get at this from a more practical sense, less woo-woo for those of you who don’t really resonate with this. The first is called, Mind Hacking by John Hargave and the other is called The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. Mind hacking takes the metaphor of your brain/mind being the same as a computer in that a computer has codes and systems that help it run smoothly. Similarly, the mind has beliefs and behaviors that stem from that belief (those are our ‘codes’). Whenever a computer has a bug, we take it apart to figure out how to debug it and rewrite the code so that the software and computer can run more efficiently. Hargave offers that meditation is an opportunity to learn to train your mind to concentrate. When you can train your mind to focus, you can expand your sense of awareness. You begin to notice things that perhaps, you were too busy in the mind to pay attention to. When you have self awareness you can go about cracking the code and debugging your belief system so that you can rewrite, and reprogram the codes in your mind. If you can do this, you can change the course of you life. You just have to be willing to change, and to be open+receptive. The Slight Edge builds upon the premise that EVERY decision either propels you forward toward your dream or keeps you stuck and stagnant. If you can have that slight edge and do the small things that will garner success, you have a better chance of changing your life for the better. One of my favorite authors, Gretchin Rubin states, “What you do everyday matters more than what you do once in a while.”
So if we are constantly unaware of how we are feeling, thinking, acting, we are perpetuating this cycle of feeling unfullfilled and being complacent with how things are. Some of you might have even heard the phrase, “its just the way it is.” If you agree, and accept this statement to be true, remember what you think and what you believe becomes true for YOU. If we are constantly engaging in negative self-talk, let me gently remind you that it WILL take some time to get a handle of engaging with yourself and showing yourself compassion by stating in present tense that ‘No, I am not stupid, I refuse this thought and remind myself in this moment that I am loved, I am brilliant, I am deserving of all the good things this world has to offer, and it is readily available to me now by focusing on the good.”
When I began noticing and paying attention to my own self-talk I felt drained and also shocked at the things I would say to myself. I was in awe that I would be so kind, and considerate for others-heck I’d even bend over backwards for most people, but not for myself, to myself. It felt like a lot of mental gymnastics. Which is why this is a process and it is for life. We have spent most of our lives engaging and participating in this spiral of negative self-talk, criticism, lack of direct communication, and honesty for most of our lives. You can learn to rewire your thoughts. You CAN be confident in expressing your feelings to yourself and others.
I challenge you this week to pay attention to your thoughts. Be an observer in your own body. Like guests checking into a hotel, observe your thoughts (they are the hotel guests) for they will come and go. Pay attention to the thoughts that you ruminate over. Notice how you feel: are they making you feel good or feel bad? Then ask yourself Why? Once you get answer, keep asking yourself another four or five WHYS if it is a thought or emotional situation and you keep ruminating…sit with yourself and your thoughts and just observe and see what you can learn about yourself.
In a world that tells you how to be and what to be, you must know who you are in order to drown out the lies and the illusion. You are truth. You are love. You are light.
Make space today to proclaim words that empower, uplift, and change your direction. Your words ARE the ship that will help said in whichever direction you please to go. As always my friends, STAY LIFTED. I love you. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

The Planets Wrote Your January Horoscope, All I Did Was Translate
Happy New Year and holy Oprah! I just realized that part of what I love about Astrology Zone’s Susan Miller is that she speaks like a fourth “Mrs.” (there are three: Who, Whatsit, Which) in A Wrinkle in Time. For example, Mrs. Miller equated some celestial good fortune thing (I can’t even remember) to that of a joyful cup of hot cocoa. And then, to some sign who she imagined was asking, “Whyyyyyyyy” to a bit of life-related bull crap caused by the January 31st eclipse, she said this:
“The universe wants us to live a happy, productive life, and will not abide stagnation, so the universe sends an eclipse to test the strength of relationships and situations and to shake the status quo.”
I liked that.
She is also, Bob (the Builder) bless her, a bit long-winded. And no shit!* It takes an awful lot of words to pack a month’s worth of your life into a single horoscope seeing as it’s based on all the wackadoo planets and their various dramas.
But you’re busy! Who has time to read astrological novels? And speaking of the aforementioned shit, Uranus is both being one and doing some, I’m sure. Who wants to read about that? (Though I promise that when it comes to Uranus’s shit, you can handle it. At least Mercury’s out of retrograde.) So in an effort to keep January moving at a positive, forward-moving-into-the-new-year-and-your-best-self clip, this round of horoscopes is going to be a little different, themed around THE ONE THING YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO KNOW. There will hopefully be less poop references than there were in this intro (no promises about excessive parenthetical asides) although that has nothing to do with keeping the mystery alive and everything to do with my your tolerance of my humor.
And with that, en garde! Strap on your ice skates and let’s get started!
Capricorn
What kind of friend would I be if I didn’t decorate your proverbial locker right here in Horoscope Hall and proclaim to you, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!”
With that settled and out of the way, hello Capricorn nuts (great snack)! Susan Thriller says that “this will be an extraordinary month for you. Heavenly bodies are migrating to your sign at a scale you’ve never seen, including the Sun, new moon, Venus, Mercury, Saturn, and Pluto in Capricorn on January 16.” Per her, “this is your chance to get your way.” Or the HIGHWAY! Am I right? But what’s so bad about a highway, anyway?
Hit it, Tom Cochrane!
Assuming you don’t consider this the “sitting in traffic” equivalent of celestial predictions, you’ll be focused on your home next month and for years to come, apparently. That sounds awfully cozy to me.
January 6th and 8th are great days for friendship so tell everyone to text you then. Keep yourself unplugged until then. When it comes to charm, I’m pretty sure I just saw a toothpaste ad-quality sparkle beam off your tooth, because from now until the 17th you’re dazzling the pants off everyone. Your shine’s so sparkly I heard them calling you a Liberace jumpsuit from a mile away. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some keys(board) to tickle.
Aquarius
Fresh water Aquarius, I hear from my frood friend Frusan that you need a little vacation after your vacation! If you don’t know where to start, do what I just did: remove the first letter of words then add an “fr” to frem (see? “frem” instead of “them”) — for literally no reason. Do that in your work emails and see if anyone understands what you’re talking about. They won’t, and I typically don’t, so it’s kind of like being alone on a relaxing deserted island, until someone gets annoyed with you, I guess.
If confusing everyone is not your thing and you hate seeing the angry red squiggle of your computer’s inner editor shouting, “THAT IS MOST DEFINITELY NOT A WORD!!! STOP PUTTING ‘FR’ IN FRONT OF WORDS UNNECESSARILY,” then just try taking it easy until the new moon on January 16th, “when most of the solar system will be grouped in your twelfth house of solitude and reflection.” I.e. you won’t miss out on the party if you put your feet up for a bit and stay in. It’s too cold out there anyways.
Even though you’re chilling, now’s a wonderful time for your career, especially when it comes to new job stuff. Keep your ear hopes open around the 5th. Susan said the 6th too but that’s a weekend so byeeeeee.
Overall, this is bound to be a year of excitement, change, and growth. Susan said that. She baked those words like cookies made with love. I just put the oven mitt on and took them out of the oven.
Pisces
My favorite fish sticks! If you couldn’t relax in December, well guess the hell what? Now you can. January has you primed for straight chilling. (Join an Aquarius under the sea: they too have their feet up.) And please do chill all you want, but don’t forget your reflexes because–
Suz Mail coming in hot! “January 16 finds more than half the solar system circulating in your eleventh house of friendship and fun events, thanks to the arrival of the Sun, new moon, Venus, Mercury, Saturn, and Pluto, all in Capricorn. This configuration will bring new friends, invitations to groups, and happy experiences with friends, and for you, this will be the case.”
Okay! So it’s going to be all about the friendship for you this month, to which you may say, “I love my friends, but they do not help me relax. They are party animals.” That’s why it gets cold in the winter, silly fish! Do you forget because you live in the ocean? (So cool, by the way.) Mammals hibernate in the winter, especially humans! Encourage your friends to join you in a furry-leg filled rendition of how much cookie dough can we eat without getting so sick that we don’t want to eat the pizza we just ordered. Let me know if I can come.
Something else you might like to know before I pack a bag and head over is that, “Mars will tour your tenth house of honors, awards, and achievement from January 26 until March 17.” That means that if you were even beginning to think about feeling work-guilty about relaxing, now you have no excuse not to say, “You know what, I rule, and I deserve this nap.”
Aries
First of all, Aries, in the name of a new year and therefore potentially a new monogram (why not!) I’d like to run some new nicknames by you and let all Aries vote in the comments. Do you like…
A) Aries David, like Larry David, but more Ram-like.
B) ArieZona Iced Tea, stylized as such to keep in line with the tall boy can choice of my youth — a harrowing stylistic decision given that I was unsure if it was more responsible to add the Aries’ standard ‘S’ before the AriZona Z (but I stand by it).
C) Faries, instead of fairies. A little less fun but it makes me think of FernGully, which I do only every so often, when looking for mullet inspiration.
Anyway, let me know in the comments below. All of this was a lead-up to tell you that sometimes, when it comes to horoscopes, I truly believe (though you wouldn’t know it) that less is more, which is why, Aries, by January 6, you will be a “virtual money magnet,” per Susan Miller, and you’ll reach “a major development in your romantic relationship.” If that doesn’t hint toward a similar vein as the Markles’ recent engagement photos and sound like a good time and a bottle of wine, then I don’t know what does.
Taurus
Thanks for getting the door, Taur! This month, I have to tell you, is all about travel for us. Just a whole butt and bucketload of travel! When I read this I was like, listen Susan, I traveled on January 1st as you said I would (which, no offense, wasn’t exactly the most revelatory prediction of the year given that a lot of people traveled on this date what with the holiday and all), but I have no other travel planned.
And then I thought to myself, wait a minute, I did not grow up watching Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood for nothing, and I can travel using my imagination to do all sorts of things like draw or write or be more creative or check out what kind of bedspread my neighbors may or may not be using. I can time travel a la the tesseract if I truly needed. (Put me out of my misery, please, and just let me have a private showing of A Wrinkle in Time, Ava, I beg of you!!! Are you still reading? Who am I and in what century are we partying?) I can also very well travel to and from all sorts of local destinations. This weekend, for example, I’d love nothing more than to travel the entire circumference of my couch.
So anyway, if you have trips of any kind, I’d love to know about them.
Something else to know about our sign because that wasn’t much (blame the planets!!!), is that Mars and Jupiter are doing the horizontal dance in Scorpio, our house of marriage this month, which they have not done since August 9th, 1982 — and I wasn’t born yet. So get ready to take that metaphorically or literally and run with it. A partner will come in handy toward the middle of the month (January 16th) when Susan says something’s going to try to come out of NOWHERE and fuck shit up (blame Uranus, who I know I said I wouldn’t talk about and am done with this sentence) but she is confident we can blast through whatever’s head so long as we think calmly (hahahahah I don’t do that!), act methodically and react swiftly. But that partner, remember? They’ll be your saving grace.
Gemini
Gemini. I can’t lie to you. Things have taken a turn for the strange this round of horoscopes. What started out as an idea to offer up the ONE THING each sign needed to know turned into a whirlwinded fury of subconscious blathering-ons and I just am not too sure if any signs know what the hell is going on, but they’re all sure as hell going to try to make it work. Is that not a true and sort of beautiful metaphor for our human existence, or by George, did I do it again and lose my mind in the jungle? Let’s conduct a poll, shall we? That’s the only real productive thing I’ve managed to accomplish.
When it comes to Repell-o Scopes, do you read them to:
A) Pass the time while getting a wax
B) Actually want to know how to predict your month ahead
C) Have a solid example of what NOT to do with your journalism degree
or D) Waffles
If you chose D, here’s some maple syrup: on January 8th, Jupiter will send a “shimmering signal to the Sun on January 8,” which is a brilliant day to schedule meetings and set up times to talk with VIPs, or anyone who you need to really listen to you, to your ideas, to your greatest existential being. If that meeting was good but not “WOW-IE!,” no worries, January 10th bring even more support from the higher-ups you need to move along your next area of ladder climbing. Susan encourages that you use this time to negotiate and keep negotiating.
“That entire week, from January 6 to 9 will be special for you,” she says, even though the 6th is a weekend and she keeps forgetting this, “but you must make an effort to negotiate finances and make decisions about them.” Apparently tension about money, if you’re feeling any, will let the hell up by the 19th. After that, you’ll turn to travel. Apparently I’m going to be aboard Steve Zissou’s underwater vessel all month so join me, won’t you?
Cancer
Crunchy lovely orange crabs!!! I thought of you the whole time I was home in San Francisco because I brought my man friend who was visiting various tourist destinations and I forgot just how interwoven the theme of the CRAB is into the city. It’s like Maine’s lobster, but not, because it’s the San Francisco crab. (Btw I’m looking at the California bear as we speak — my mom got me a pillow with the bear on it — and the bear seems on board. We’re all friends here!)
Let’s talk ‘scope because my fingers are going numb: A lot of your January horoscope revolved around career and money. All good things because I say so! But!!! You’re positioned to enter a highly romantic period, too, and right now that just feels more festive to type about.
Susan writes, “If you feel the energies of the month in a more romantic way, you may get engaged or married, especially at some point during the first seven days of January (which may have started December 30 or 31, too). A golden triangle will appear in the sky at that time, formed by several heavenly bodies, specifically the moon in Cancer (you), Mars and Jupiter (true love and romance), and Neptune (sumptuous long distance travel). Additionally, in the first ten days of January, your crowd of planets will receive shimmering vibrations from Neptune (inspiration), Jupiter (happiness), and Mars (energy).” It was just a lot which is why I had to copy/paste it. Also, I refuse to pass up an opportunity to read someone else’s words about “shimmering vibrations.”
Anyway, please remember that everything is a metaphor when it comes to horoscopes and “engaged” or “married” can mean whatever you want it to, in whatever field you want it to. For example, I may become “engaged” to a BLT in about four seconds, and I feel like I’m about to get “married” to my couch the moment the clock strikes weekend.
Oh and enjoy all the money you’re due to make at the end of the month!
Leo
Oh you big beautiful cat! Let me comb your mane with my fingers. I just told Virgo down below that I forgot to watch Love, Actually over the holidays. I weirdly watched barely any holiday movies, come to think of it, which makes me sad because I have a pretty strong policy against post-December holiday movie-watching…but if there’s a snowstorm, fuck it, I’ll slip in Family Stone and you can’t stop me! Also, when it comes to holiday movies off-season, am I the only other person who loves Dan in Real Life and doesn’t know where it belongs on the calendar? It’s not a SUPREMELY holiday-ish movie, but it’s also not not one either. Sigh. Anyway, the movie I did watch over the holidays that was slightly holiday-thematic is The Chronicles of Narnia!
You know, I love this music video^ but have always felt that this is a rather active Sunday. Like they go from the West Village to the Upper West Side for a movie? That is a lot of schlepping, mostly because it involves a commitment to being somewhere on time. Kinda gives me Sunday anxiety.
I forgot my point. OH FOUND IT! The lion thing made me think of Chronicles of Narnia, hence the detour, and now we’re here:
Your one thing to know this January round of horoscopes is that January will be a “strenuous month at work,” (Susan said but I know you can handle this!) “so find frequent ways to treat your body, mind, and spirit with care.” Roll your Lion sleeves up, crack your knuckles, get down with the get down toward your road of success and then later that night, have a DIY spa. Ahhh.
Your biggest day of the whole MONTH, just as a heads up, is January 31st. It will bring about a big ol’ conclusion on something major in your life you’ve been working on. Don’t you just love giant bows that wrap things up?
Virgo
Virgo I have a quick poll to run by you, which Virgo-name-pun would have been more funny had I not just felt the need to run it by you?
Would it have been:
A) Virgo-go Power Rangers!
B) Virgo who can’t drive (an homage, of course, to Clueless)
or C) Virgo Mobile/Virgo Airlines
I want to say A or B, feel like I dropped the joke ball on C and more than anything need you Virgos to know that unfortunately, you will probably hear D, all of the above, in the future. As for your great horoscope that is the OPPOSITE of unfortunate, you can kind of just chill a bit and eat pineapples or whatever it is you do in your recreational time until the new moon of January 16th, because on that date, your fifth house of true love is going to be lit ALL THE WAY UP!
Here’s your one thing to know about your sign this month: “With an extraordinary number of heavenly bodies filling this area of your chart,” writes Susan, who should definitely have a cameo in A Wrinkle in Time, I am now convinced, “including the Sun, new moon, Venus, Mercury, Saturn, and Pluto – if single, you will be open to meeting new people. Virgo rarely has unrealistic expectations, especially in matters of the heart, and that will put you in a good position to decide which persons you’d like to meet and know better, as well as which persons to pass up.” If you’re not single, well then get ready to get all Vir-goo-goo eyes at your loved one! Nothing says devotion like staring straight into your loved one’s pores. IT IS A MONTH OF ROMANCE!!! The whole month. All of it. I may have just decided this but don’t I get a say? It’s your life so you certainly do.
January 6th is a good day to start a project and the 31st is going to be extraordinarily relaxing, where love is not concerned. Even though “love, actually … is all around.” Or however that movie goes. I forgot to watch it in December!!!
Libra
Liberace, I hope you can forgive me for making a Liberace joke in another sign, I know that’s usually our thing but I was referencing a glitter jumpsuit or some such nonsense.
Let’s focus, because I promised we’d streamline these ‘scopes this month and if we’re being honest (we always are, aren’t we) I haven’t done the best job streamlining it. I’ve been rambling — realllll rambling man, as they say.
Lotta money for you this month, especially close to January 6th, when “Jupiter, giver of gifts and luck, will conjunct Mars.” (Hi Suz quote!) “This is a rare aspect, for these two Titans of the planetary lineup only happen once every two years, but when they do, the always meet in a different sign. This year these luminaries will meet in your second house of earned income, so you will have the money for any life transitions you might be planning. Take this aspect seriously – it won’t come again until November 24, 2053.”
What the hell is in 2053! What kind of sneakers will you be wearing? WHO WILL BE PRESIDENT? Who’s to say, but let’s pray for great things and until then, enjoy your piles of money. Part of me wants to say spend them wisely but the other part of me is like, “I’m hungry!”
(Okay fine, sure: Susan gives one slight heads-up that come January 16th, you will be happy you have an extra cushion for the pushin’ because you’ll want to spend some cash on your home. She suspects you’re making changes in your “living situation.” Should we talk shelves? Should we talk apartments at large?
One more thing! This month, LOVE IS IN THE AIR AND IT SMELLS LIKE BABY GOATS IN PAJAMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Scorpio
Scorpio I hope your pinchy claws can hold umbrellas because you’re going to need to take cover come January 6th: whole lotta MONEY is about to rain down!!!
$$$$$ YAYYYYY $$$$$$$$$$$$$
Mars is in your sign until January 26th, which means at work, it’s time for you to take the lead. People already listen to you, per Suz, but boy oh boy is the floor ever yours and are people watching you! It means that now is your time to shine. Would you like some wine with that cheese?
I was just in Napa and can barely tell you anything about my opinion on which wine selection to choose today, if you were about to ask me. The one that doesn’t taste like vinegar that I just found in my fridge? For real: how long can you drink a bottle of wine after you open it and put the cork back in? How do you know if it “tastes a little funky,” or if it’s straight up poison? Can you cook with bad wine like you can make banana bread with old bananas? All ears in the comments down below.
Actually no! I am not drunk today, thank you for asking!
But, er, what I think I keep attempting to get at is that a lot of your money may come from approved proposals and such because of that floor being yours, and you taking advantage of it. Catch my drift? And you’re scheduled to get an award at the end of the month. That sounds grand. You deserve it. I’ll hang it on my fridge if yours isn’t magnetic!
Sagittarius
Hoorrayyyy half-horsed and behooved friend of mine! If you’ve been working on a big idea, perhaps one that lives behind your gut or within your brain space or within the confines of your computer — wherever — then this is the month for it to begin to see the light of day! “Mars will allow you to push your idea or project out in the open for all to see when it moves into Sagittarius on January 26 to stay until March 17,” writes Thriller.
But I think she uses a key grouping of words there: “Mars will allow you to push your idea,” meaning Mars has its hands out like, “Alright fuckers! Stand back and make way for brilliance!” so that you can charge through like the four-legged cool creature that you are and really make some progress. Fight for your right to party and succeed! It’s all up to you though — that’s what I’m getting at. Sleep now, rest now, so that you’ve got a fire (the safe kind) lit under your butt when it comes time to make moves.
“This will be the most important part of the year for you to push through your biggest ideas,” Susan continues, and I keep quoting her because I’ve lost my damn mind and I like what she has to say today. “You will have the podium, the spotlight, and the microphone; and influential people will sit up and take notice of all you have to say. VIPs will be impressed with your courage, energy, and drive, and will be drawn to want to help you reach your goals. This is no time to be shy or to think on a small scale. You only get Mars every two years in your own sign, and once you have it, as you will starting on January 26, you must use it.”
USE IT ALL, CELESTIAL NEIGH-BOR. I’ll be over here with my chin in my hands, ready to text you a bundle of confetti when you say, “I did it!”

David Baron's new nonfiction work, American Eclipse: A Nation's Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World, chronicles how three scientists raced to study the rare solar eclipse of 1878 as it darkened America's wild west. Baron is a journalist, author, and broadcaster who has worked as an environment reporter for NPR. In preparation for the first total solar eclipse to cross the United States from coast to coast in 99 years, Baron wrote this literary guide to the celestial event: When a total solar eclipse—like the one that will cross the United States this August 21—darkened skies above the American West on July 29, 1878, astronomer Samuel Pierpont Langley found himself at a loss for words. "I once experienced an earthquake, and I think this and a total eclipse of the sun are two things that it is no use trying to describe," he explained in a letter to his family. "[Y]ou must feel or see for yourself."I understand Langley's dilemma.I have had the good fortune of witnessing five total solar eclipses in various parts of the globe. I can attest that they are unlike anything else in the realm of human experience and are impossible to capture fully in words. While writing American Eclipse, however, I did not have the luxury of simply calling the spectacle "indescribable." My charge was to bring the experience to life on the page, and I became fascinated with how others have attempted this daunting feat.My favorite modern description of a total eclipse comes from the brilliant Annie Dillard. "The sky snapped over the sun like a lens cover. The hatch in the brain slammed," she wrote of the sudden extinguishment of daylight that she observed near Yakima, Washington, in 1979. (Her essay "Total Eclipse" appears in the collection Teaching a Stone to Talk.) "The eyes dried, the arteries drained, the lungs hushed. There was no world. We were the world's dead people rotating and orbiting around and around, embedded in the planet's crust, while the earth rolled down."Yes, the language is surreal, but that is precisely how one feels—perplexed, disoriented, off-kilter—when the sun disappears.Almost two centuries earlier, another great writer—the American novelist James Fenimore Cooper (author of The Last of the Mohicans)—witnessed a total eclipse in upstate New York. He was a youth and wrote up his memories much later, in an essay published posthumously (in Putnam's Magazine, September 1869). Although Cooper's prose is of a different era—infused with overt religiosity—he, like Dillard, describes the bewilderment and deep emotion evoked by the sight. "It seemed as if the great Father of the Universe had visibly, and almost palpably, veiled his face in wrath," he recalled. Cooper remembered feeling a profound sense of awe—"a clearer view than I had ever yet had of the majesty of the Almighty, accompanied with a humiliating, and, I trust, a profitable sense of my own utter insignificance."Science can explain the mechanics of a total eclipse, but it requires the sensibility of a poet to convey how the human mind perceives the experience. Perhaps no one was better suited to the task than Mabel Loomis Todd. Remembered today as Emily Dickinson's editor, who engaged in a scandalous affair with the reclusive poet's brother (see the book Austin and Mabel), Todd was married to an astronomy professor at Amherst College and witnessed a total eclipse on the Japanese coast in 1896. "Grayer and grayer grew the day, narrower and narrower the crescent of shining light. The sea faded to leaden nothingness," Todd wrote in Corona and Coronet. "Well might it have been a prelude to the shriveling and disappearance of the whole world,—weird to horror, and beautiful to heartbreak, heaven and hell in the same sky."On August 21 millions of Americans will witness this same ineffable sight. They will find themselves with a new understanding of the immensity of the universe—and the inadequacy of language.David Baron's new book, American Eclipse: A Nation's Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World, hit bookshelves in June. On August 21 Baron will be in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to witness the eclipse. Divertimento #123
Video of a patient with severe Parkinson's Disease, before and after ingesting medical marijuana. Impressive. Fossilized trilobite eggs discovered. "When [President] Roosevelt heard that a torpedo was zooming toward him, he asked to be moved with his wheelchair over to the railing so that he could see it. Fearing an assassination plot, the Iowa turned its guns toward the William D. Porter — however, the crisis ended when the torpedo finally detonated as it struck heavy waves created by the Iowa’s increased speed. Walter reportedly answered with a meek “We did it” when pressed. The entire crew was placed under arrest and sent to Bermuda to face trial — the first instance in U.S. Naval history that the entire crew of a ship had been arrested." Intraoperative virtual reality may be useful in allowing lower doses of sedatives and hypnotics for surgery patients. "Today saw the release of a new study from the Grantham Institute for Imperial College London and the Carbon Tracker Initiative. It argues that solar photovoltaics and [electric vehicles] together will kick fossil fuel’s ass, quickly. “Falling costs of electric vehicle and solar technology,” they conclude, “could halt growth in global demand for oil and coal from 2020.” That would be a pretty big deal." Explanation of the floating dry-erase stick man. Impress your friends.
"The 588th was the most highly decorated female unit in [the Soviet air force in WWII], flying 30,000 missions over the course of four years -- and dropping, in total, 23,000 tons of bombs on invading German armies. Its members, who ranged in age from 17 to 26, flew primarily at night, making do with planes that were -- per their plywood-and-canvas construction -- generally reserved for training and crop-dusting. They often operated in stealth mode, idling their engines as they neared their targets and then gliding their way to their bomb release points. Myths about what does and doesn't constitute treason. "På väg mot vaken såg vi älgen göra flera misslyckade försök att ta sig upp själv. Den klarade heller inte att knäcka isen och ta sig in till land på egen hand, så min sambo, Sigrid Sjösteen, började ivrigt hugga upp en ränna in till grundare vatten. Vi turades om att hugga i omkring 30 minuter innan älgen var i säkerhet på land." (saving a moose frozen in a lake) About those little dots on your car windows. "Most importantly, it acts to prevents ultraviolet sun rays from deteriorating the urethane sealant." And "there’s another group of dots on the windshield right behind the rearview mirror. As shown in the clip below, these dots, called the “third visor frit,” are there to help block the sun as it beams in from between the two front sun-visors." Collector's Weekly has an extensive article on the history of model railroading. Everything you need to know (or not) about the baton or truncheon (also called a cosh, billystick, billy club, nightstick, sap, blackjack). "The one for daytime was called a day-stick and was 11 inches in length. Another baton, that was used at night, was 26 inches long and called a night-stick, which is the origin of the word "nightstick"." Someone did a detailed analysis of the most recent Super Bowl (LI) and determined that the ball was in play for a total of 16 minutes and 4 seconds. "There were 178 plays (including kickoffs, point-afters, spikes, etc) with the average play being only 5.47 seconds long."
Dragonfly wings kill bacteria. "...the bacteria are essentially caught in one of those sinister traps of which movie villains are quite fond. If they don't move, the bacteria might survive. However, when they do move, shear forces pull on the EPSs, ripping the membrane apart. This results in a fatal leakage of cellular contents, which causes the cell to deflate like a balloon..." How to make ice cream from snow. Why British roads are called "metalled" when they have no metal. "Gravel is known to have been used extensively in the construction of roads by soldiers of the Roman Empire, but a limestone-surfaced road, thought to date back to the Bronze Age, has been found in Britain. Applying gravel, or "metalling," has had two distinct usages in road surfacing. The term road metal refers to the broken stone or cinders used in the construction or repair of roads or railways, and is derived from the Latin metallum, which means both "mine" and "quarry". The term originally referred to the process of creating a gravel roadway. Pie chart explains pyramids. "The paternoster is kind of elevator that consist of a chain of open compartments that move up and down continuously through the vertical shaft of a building in a loop and without stopping. Passengers step into the moving compartments in the direction they wish to go and then hop off when the elevator reaches the desired floor. There is no stopping in between the floors, and passengers must remain alert and get their timing right or else get severed." China is now the world's biggest producer of solar energy. Read about Mohamed Bzeek, a foster father who takes in children with terminal illnesses.
"Now, Bzeek spends long days and sleepless nights caring for a bedridden 6-year-old foster girl with a rare brain defect. She’s blind and deaf. She has daily seizures. Her arms and legs are paralyzed. Bzeek, a quiet, devout Libyan-born Muslim who lives in Azusa, just wants her to know she’s not alone in this life. “I know she can’t hear, can’t see, but I always talk to her,” he said. “I’m always holding her, playing with her, touching her. … She has feelings. She has a soul. She’s a human being.”
Apeirophobia is fear of everlasting life. UNIT 731 (2015) "A research unit of the Imperial Japanese Army during the second Sino-Japanese War and WW2, who conducted human experiments and committed horrible war crimes. After the war, the U.S. government assisted in a coverup of their activities in exchange for the medical data they acquired." "A Utah mother has received immense amounts of praise on social media for dressing up as a man to take her son to a "dads and doughnuts" event at his school... Kittrell said she became a single parent three years ago, and eventually asked her son if he wanted to take his grandfather to the event. Her son told her no and that he wanted to take her because she was his mother and father." An argument that the phrase "Dark Ages" is inappropriate. "Far from being a stagnant dark age, as the first half of the Medieval Period (500-1000 AD) certainly was, the period from 1000 to 1500 AD actually saw the most impressive flowering of scientific inquiry and discovery since the time of the ancient Greeks, far eclipsing the Roman and Hellenic Eras in every respect." The CIA has a Flickr account with a webpage with many albums of declassified maps. The Bay of Bengal is dying. "Many once-abundant species have all but disappeared.... Fish stocks have been decimated by methods that include cyanide poisoning. The region was once famous for its coral reefs; these have been ravaged by dynamite-fishing and climate-change induced bleaching. Yet the exploitation of these waters continues without check." "Queen Elizabeth had her own “Watchers,” a network of agents who intercepted letters, cracked codes, and captured possible dissenters to protect the crown in secret. The queen’s network of spies formed the original surveillance state in the U.K., and she started it for good reason... When spying abroad, Dee signed each private letter to Elizabeth with the insignia “007”—a moniker that was later borrowed by Ian Fleming, writer of James Bond." A mother saved her baby from a house fire by strapping him into a car seat and then dropping him from the second-story window.
"Soul-crushing facts about income inequality." Why you shouldn't play dodgeball with a softball player. "Technology can also allow people to access cars long after they’ve sold them, which is enough to leave any buyer uncomfortable." "Hungry hungry humans." A discussion thread suggested this was either a corporate team-building exercise, or a Mormon youth-group activity. This Finnish resort bills itself as "the world's most enchanting Arctic resort." I believe it. Look at the photos and the videos. "There have been rumblings regarding some sort of nuclear incident—or possibly incidents—in the Arctic over the last month. Multiple reports, some of them from official monitoring organizations, have reported iodine 131—a radioactive isotope often associated with nuclear fission—has been detected via air sampling stations throughout the region." A waitress physically drags an unwanted guest from a restaurant. (this) How to use a can of tuna to cook a dinner (clever, but I asked a friend who does long-distance hikes; he said he'd rather consume the oil than burn it) This week's gifs:
