CARPE DIEM, BABY

Delivering you with some ultimate, neglected high school detention drama in the mid 80′s.

Have you guys seen The Breakfast club? Well if you already did, this is sorta... Inspired by it? Maybe? It’s not actually like their outfit or something but the vibes itself.

That bench and those criss–cross thingy caught me and my old school self responded with an old school outfit habit that I’ve always been kickin. If you’ve been reading here, you’ll get it. Maybe its my wishful thinking of what if I’m living on a different era or maybe just I’m an old school rebel.

That scenery really talked to me, the vibes were really dreamy. *at least for me* there’s this football field where the jocks play and you’re just supposed to sit there because you’re asked to. Drinking your large soda with some nachos and hotdogs, wishing your crush from the field look at you. Yeah, the dream.

70′s, 80′s, and 90′s are my biggest influence when it comes to everything. I like their vibes. It’s so easy going. Sometimes its bold. Its different. It’s like being unprepared yet it kicks ass. It doesn’t give any rules, you can snatched everything in your closet and put it all together and it’ll look good. Maybe that’s why I snatched that shorts I’m wearing.

Those pants were my daddy’s old shorts way, way back when he was around high school or college. I’m really glad he kept it because i love men’s walking shorts *insert the shy emoji* It’s a good way that not only you can wear your mom’s, sisters, brother’s or boyfriend’s clothes, you can also wear your dad’s. Hahaha! Instead of going with mom jeans, these months its been a thing so making my way the other way around, I’m kicking my dad’s closet.

going to war!

So this weekend was all about the trenches! Cleaning out the trenches (or footings) ready for the Engineer’s inspection.  It felt like going to war, not war between Scottie and I as we actually work really well together; but war on my body.  You know you are getting old when you need to apply the Voltaren Gel on your back, shoulders and arms before you pick up the shovel!

This is the probably the first day that I have been on the tools and done a whole day, shoveling dirt! Previous to this, Scott has been working solo on the excavator or bobcat and I couldn’t really assist.  My role, was more that of support crew.  Making sure he had food in his belly and a clean towel after a shower.  I think Scott really enjoyed having the company today and we bopped along to the “Old Skool” radio channel blasting on his Makita digital radio, as we worked together as allies in the trenches.

We were pleasantly surprised today by a visit from our kind neighbour who took the drone photos for us.  He and his wife have recently put their house and property on the market.  They built their house over 20 years ago and now in their 70’s it has become too much for them to look after and they are preparing to downsize.  It made me think that we are just starting out on this journey and at the point that they were all those years ago.  It makes me sad to think that one day we will also be in their predicament and that our property and house will probably become too much for us too in years to come.  It is a harsh reality and a reminder that we must live for today and enjoy every moment. We can’t dwell on might happen in the future, we need to embrace the present, it is our gift and what keeps us motivated. (Karen - 19/02/2017)

                                Today’s look is one that is heavily inspired by the warm tones and psychedelic prints of the 70s. The iconic style of this period has made a massive comeback over the past few seasons from flared trousers and bell bottomed sleeves to corduroy and sherling jackets. But today I wanted to focus on something that hasn’t been seen as much – the use of print. This is a handmade vintage skirt (probably made from fabric from that exact period) and features a bold optical illusion type print. It features the colourway of black, white and brown and is a stand out piece in my wardrobe. As much as I love all of the 70s trends I though this is a really fun way of styling a 70s piece that we don’t see too much of.

To work in with the tones in the skirt I decided to add a rich warm toned knit in an olive / mustard colour. It ties in well with the colourway of the skirt and keeps up the 70s look. However I thought to keep the look current and fresh I would juxtapose the warm tones with my cool toned grey coat and metallic silver/green bag. This adds a cool twist to the look and makes it more modern and much less a simple recreation of a look from that time. To finish the look of (and to make it more casual) I threw on my trusty old skool vans, However if you was heading out for food or drinks a pair of metallic heeled boots would look incredible.

Sneakers have always been important to me. My dad had me laced in cool kicks before I was able to walk, and buying sneakers was something we bonded over ever since.

Over the years, I’ve sampled many a silhouette, not to mention a plentiful number of brands. It’s taken some trial and error to hone in on what styles and shapes complement each other best — i.e., workwear pants and Vans. Granted, my favorite pairings are subject to change with time; people used to make memes about people wearing cool trainers with bootcut jeans, but I felt no shame wearing this outfit a few months ago.

Keeping up with the “kick game” can be complicated (and in some circumstances, expensive), but also a lot of fun once you find your ideal apparel-sneaker equation. Continue below to see how I recommend styling six classic sneaker silhouettes.

1. Low-Top Sneakers

Wearing crisp new trainers with dresses makes me feel like I’ve cracked the code on creating my ideal balance, which is two parts grown woman and one part little brother — exhibits A, B, and C. If you’re wearing a bright or printed dress, I recommend pairing it with a solid sneaker, and vice versa.

2. Basketball Sneakers

Prior to this shoot, I’ve never worn a pair of Jordans off the court — I’ll spare you the details of my completely embarrassing career as a near six-foot-tall woman who stinks at basketball. Anyway, since I’m a newbie to this sneaker silhouette, I took a hint from Aleali May and leaned completely into a streetwear vibe for styling. Pairing an oversized jersey with baggy cargos brought me right to the intersection of Low-key Lane and Cool Girl Avenue, which I plan on revisiting again soon.

3. Dad Sneakers

Something about wearing dad sneakers makes me feel a lot like a seasoned professional commuting to the office — hence the blazer. After reading Leandra’s thoughts on ugly sneakers, the concept of chunky kicks as “leg weights” stuck with me. That said, going really top-heavy clothing-wise felt right because the thickness of these sneakers balanced me out on the bottom.

4. High-Top Sneakers

Although I haven’t been drawn to them in recent years, I’ll always have a soft spot for Converse. In middle school, picking out the right pair was essential to establishing my sense of self. Plus, they’re extra sentimental because my dad used to wear them as a kid back in the ’70s (often with super short shorts, I might add). So I figured, what better way to style a timeless sneaker than with some other equally timeless pieces: a white T-shirt, a rugby shirt and Dickies.

5. Minimalist Sneakers

Although I don’t naturally gravitate toward such simple sneakers, I appreciate their ability to transcend the streetwear aesthetic. With an outfit like this, I would normally reach for a strappy sandal or a mule, but these Common Projects sneakers turned out to be a seamless, no-pedicure-necessary substitute.

6. Skate Sneakers

You’d think that after being teased by a 12-year-old boy for wearing a Thrasher T-shirt, I’d learn to stop inserting myself into skate culture, but here I am. This look was born out of my appreciation for sartorial contrast: These “Old Skool” Vans are totally worthy of “shredding the gnar,” but this delicate silk skirt made me think twice about taking a seat on the subway. In my opinion, I’ve turned the “poser” nickname into a glass-half-full situation and I invite you to do the same.

“Martin Luther King, The N-word and 2012″

It's so hard to believe how quickly the years are going by. Just three years ago, I was debating whether or not to make my annual Martin Luther King Day CD. New York City seemed to be changing drastically and the kids who were coming out to Escuelita were not interested in my traditional musical celebration of Rev. King.

Last year this time, I posted a blog about my appreciation for the achievements of President Obama. That blog garnered me some un-welcomed comments where a well known drag queen high-jacked my blog to promote her agenda of bad-mouthing Obama. She went on and on about all the things he did wrong or didn't do. It was almost as though she was telling me that I had no right to be proud of our first African-American President.

And now that I am spending most of my time in Canada where they do not celebrate"Martin Luther King Day", I really had to take a moment to think about what the holiday means to me.

A long time ago, I looked up the word "nigger" in the Webster Dictionary. It defined the word as "a stupid person" and "a racial slur for Africans". As I look around in this New Year, it disturbs me that this word is part of the daily lexicon in our youth's culture. Thanks to Hip Hop artists keeping it real, everyone feels like it is okay to just drop the N-word whenever they feel like it.

Last year, a popular gay burlesque troop in Toronto had a major show where one of it's black performers was being honored and a white dancer paid tribute by performing inblack-face. A female impersonator from Toronto actually had professional photos of himself in black-face posted on his facebook page. And in the news, there were some firemen who dressed in black-face for Halloween.

And let us not forget the popularity of another black-faced performer....Shirley Q. Liquor. I must admit when I first heard her material I laughed. She is a brilliant comedian and if I had never seen her, I'd probably still be a fan.

A long time friend released an old skool bitch track where he says "nigger please" twice in the recording and on his YouTube video. After closer inspection of some of his videos on YouTube, I noticed that the N-word was dropped very casually in several. I mentioned it to him, but he said that it wasn't racial it was just how the kids talk.

Almost every trip I take to New York City, I cringe at how many latinos are dropping the N-word like it's going out of style. But if someone said "wetback" or "spick" they'd be ready to fight in a minute.

Well in my opinion, all of these folks using the N-word (or any racial slur) are the first definition of the word!

I dated an individual who was from St. Louis and he was what some might call a "wigger". He had all the slang and had no qualms about dropping the N-word. At the time, he really wanted to go out with me, but I told him that I couldn't. Mainly because of his unfortunate use of the N-word. He saw nothing wrong with it. He tried to tell me that the young people of today have taken that word back and it has lost its power.

NO IT HASN'T! The older people who run congress and the finances in the United States have not forgotten what it means. The Republicans who are running for the oval office have not forgotten what it means. The people who hire and fire employees have not forgotten what it means. It's just your stupid asses who are running around disrespecting the African-Americans who gave their lives for you to be able to walk and talk freely. And this is what you do with your freedom? Sitting on subways talking loud and cursing while calling each other "nigger". That is the true meaning of "a stupid person".

Because I was raised by my grandmother, I grew up with a different sensibility about race. I know what it is to have a bottle thrown at you from a passing car as someone yelled"nigger". I watched my grandmother get spit on in a grocery store by a white woman who called her "nigger" because she wanted to skip her in the check out line. I grew up watching my grandmother despise "All In The Family" because the Archie Bunker character was just a little too real for her. So, don't tell me that the word has lost its power.

Just like slavery was abolish, so should the word "nigger".

Back in the 70's, my mother had a an album by The Last Poets. On it was a track called"Niggers Are Scared Of Revolution". I used to listen to it even though I didn't fully understand the meaning behind it. It wasn't until much later in the 80's that I really got what they were saying. The stupid people were afraid of change. And in a way when I hear a young black kid say "nigger" I believe that his family and education has taught him to hold on to that word. There is a safety in that word. You know where you stand with that word. I have never accepted that word and never will!

I don't believe that Martin Luther King or Malcolm X died for black people to accept being called that word. No matter who is saying it. You as black people are giving everyone the right to call you that word when you callously just drop "nigger" in a sentence.

I remember watching Jay Z on Oprah and she had an issue with the word in his music. He explained that rappers are telling stories that the police don't want you to hear. BULLSHIT!You stupid people are letting the music industry exploit you. They give you a lot of money to get on a mic and be as black as you can be. Meanwhile, back at the ranch....some midwestern teenager thinks its cool to sound and act black. But deep down inside, they would never want to be black. They know the repercussions and deep down inside, so do you. You have been conditioned to let that word live. Let it be an anthem for black youth. Well, I say it sucks!

As a drag performer, I occasionally lip synch to Millie Jackson. Most of her material uses the N-word. So, I always give a disclaimer about the N-word (especially if it is a predominantly white audience). I tell them that it is not cool to use that word. I advise against it. Why do I do that? I do it because I feel a responsibility to those who came before me. All of the people who fought for equal rights. All the people who died in the struggle. And I know the word isn't gonna go away. But I would hope that as this Martin Luther King Dayarrives everyone will take a moment to really think about what the word "nigger" is still doing to our lives and culture.
