by Mike Christ | The exact moment when I sensed the inadequacy of my understanding of sanctification is engraved in my mind. It occurred in a small-group meeting, while discussing the dynamic between our actions and the work of the Spirit in the process of becoming holy. As these conversations often go, people were sharing what helped them grow—or at least what they learned in church about what ought to help them grow—you know, reading the Bible, praying, etc. At the same time, everyone steadfastly maintained that the Holy Spirit actually did the work of sanctification. Finally an honest woman blurted out...

Q&A with Nathan Knight
Evan: Tell us about yourself?
Nathan: I grew up in the south (Nashville, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Raleigh). My Mom loved Jesus and I’m hopeful my Dad did. Regularly attending church in the United Methodist church, I later came to faith in a Southern Baptist church as a sophomore in college…

Story: In the Rain
December 3, 2023
1 Corinthians 1:3-9Mark 13:24-37
The heavy rain this past week put me in mind of some hard rain that fell on some young ‘elepaio. I would guess you weren’t happy about all that hard rain? Well, neither were the ‘elepaio.
I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s go back a bit.
When the eggs hatched, there were two chicks in the ‘elepaio nest, a brother and sister and within just a…

(9Marks)

Jason Min: Most Asian American churches I’ve been a part of have been fairly apolitical usually because of a fear of being perceived as too political or a general unfamiliarity with navigating topics like these. At least within our community, it’s clear that the younger generation desires to have more of these kinds of conversations in the church and seeks a faith that is more civically engaged.

by Dan Darling | Well, that’s what they want you to think,” a friend insisted, with particular emphasis on the they and want, after the end of a long and fruitless argument about whether or not a group of secretive bankers was plotting in smoke-filled rooms to destroy the world. I tried, in vain, to convince him that Donald Trump’s election, a natural disaster in Indonesia, and the rise of the price of plastics were not, in fact, tied to a central, evil, dark conspiracy...

Q&A with Phil Newton and Rich Shadden (Shepherding the Pastor, Part Two)
By James Tarrance
I remember the impression Phil’s example made on me – the example of a consistent devotional life in the spiritual disciplines. Even on busy Lord’s Day mornings, he would eagerly share fresh insights or encouragements he gleaned from early time with the Lord before coming to the busy schedule at church. (To this he alludes on page 73 under “Shepherd the flock with the Word.”)…

The Movement for Congregational Singing
The Movement for Congregational Singing
Many have not yet heard about it, but a movement has been spreading among independent churches to “congregational singing,” which means “singing together” in unison excluding concert formats. The movement emphasizes going back to the biblical form of worship in song. The apostle Paul wrote, “May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord…
