Retrospectiva del #AI4Good

El pasado 29 y 30 de junio de 2018 se celebró en Madrid el hackathon #AI4Good organizado por el equipo de Terminus 7, referente en el desarrollo de Software para AI, con el apoyo de IBM, y el uso de Power 9, el Hardware líder para los despliegues de clúster orientados a la analítica predictiva, el reconocimiento de patrones, Deep Learning y la informática de alto rendimiento.

El hackathon empezó el viernes. A las 18:30 comenzaron a venir los participantes poco a poco al IBM Client Center de Madrid.

A las 19:00 arrancó una charla contando brevemente la historia de IBM y las virtudes de sus máquinas [VÍDEO]. Se comentó que es un gran privilegio pues las máquinas que se iban a utilizar en el hackathon son las mismas que se han utilizado para el ordenador más potente del mundo.

A las 19:30 se habló del crecimiento y la importancia de la Inteligencia Artificial en todos los ámbitos de nuestra vida [VÍDEO], como por ejemplo en el ámbito de la salud, y de cómo un análisis médico bien hecho puede salvar la vida de un paciente. Se recalcó la valiosa labor que en esta área está consiguiendo la gente de Terminus 7.

A las 20:00 se explicaron los retos y la operativa del día siguiente. Los retos eran 2:

- Desafío básico - IA & Detección de diabetes: a partir de un conjunto de datos de población real de personas, había que detectar qué sujetos tenían diabetes y cuáles no.

- Desafío avanzado - IA & Detección de tumores mamarios: en donde se trató un conjunto de datos de imágenes de mamografías, desarrollando una solución para indicar en qué imágenes se detectan anomalías y en cuáles no.

A las 20:30 hicimos la ya famosa rueda de presentaciones [VÍDEO] en la que cada uno de los participantes fue saludando a la cámara y al resto de compañeros.

Acto seguido dejamos un rato de networking en donde la gente fue haciendo los equipos.

Y terminamos el día con un buen conjunto, pero esta vez en lugar de datos, fue de cervezas y de pizzas. Ya en estos momentos los grupos empezaban a cavilar cómo se iba a desarrollar el hackathon.

A la mañana siguiente, puntualmente, los participantes llegaron a las 9:00 y les esperábamos con un desayuno energético para coger fuerzas.

A las 9:30 los equipos fueron subiendo a las salas de trabajo, cerca del centro de datos con las máquinas que se usaron durante el hackathon.

Después de los primeros problemas habituales de conexión, los equipos empezaron a trabajar y no pararon hasta la hora de comer.

A las 13:30 bajamos al IBM Client Center de Madrid para comer. Hubo bastante networking, aunque los equipos eran reticentes a enseñar todas sus cartas, de hecho algunos metieron prisa para volver a subir a sus puestos de trabajo.

La tarde se desarrolló sin sobresaltos. El silencio y la concentración eran la tónica general en las dos salas en donde trabajaban los equipos.

Se alargó la entrega de proyectos hasta las 20:00. En ese momento los participantes bajaron de nuevo al IBM Client Center de Madrid mientras esperaban el fallo del jurado.

Dado el alto nivel de los participantes y el gran nivel de las propuestas entregadas, la decisión del jurado fue bastante difícil. De hecho, tuvieron que llamar a los representantes de los distintos equipos para preguntarles por las distintas soluciones adoptadas.

Tras un tiempo de espera largo por parte de los participantes, finalmente se otorgaron los siguientes premios [VÍDEO]:

- Desafío básico - IA & Detección de diabetes:

Tercer clasificado: grupo 4 (150 €).

Segundo clasificado: grupo 20 (225 €).

Primer clasificado: grupo 5 (300 €).

- Desafío avanzado - IA & Detección de tumores mamarios:

Tercer clasificado: grupo 13 (300 € + 300 horas IBM Power cloud platform).

Segundo clasificado: grupo 12 (450 € + 300 horas IBM Power cloud platform).

Primer clasificado: grupo 9 (600 € + 300 horas IBM Power cloud platform).

Mientras el resto de la gente disfrutó de cervezas y comida, aunque el cansancio era ya evidente en todos los participantes que no tardaron en irse.

La verdad es que el feedback de los participantes fue bastante positivo. De hecho a la pregunta de si “se lo recomendarías a un amigo”, el 71,4 % de los encuestados contestaron que “sí, por su puesto” y el resto, contestó que “tal vez sí”, todo un éxito pues no hubo nadie que contestara “no creo” o “no, rotundamente”.

Recordamos que además el dinero de las inscripciones y el de las camisetas que suelen entregarse en este tipo de eventos se ha destinado a ONGs de afectados de diabetes y cáncer de mama: Diabetes Madrid y Geicam.
