neocities guide - why you should build your own html website
do you miss the charm of the 90s/00s web where sites had actual personality instead of the same minimalistic theme? are you feeling drained by social media and the constant corporate monopoly of your data and time? do you want to be excited about the internet again? try neocities!!
what is neocities?
neocities is a free hosting website that lets you build your own html website from scratch, with total creative control. in their own words: "we are tired of living in an online world where people are isolated from each other on boring, generic social networks that don't let us truly express ourselves. it's time we took back our personalities from these sterilized, lifeless, monetized, data mined, monitored addiction machines and let our creativity flourish again."
why should I make my own website?
web3 has been overtaken by capitalism & conformity. websites that once were meant to be fun online social spaces now exist solely to steal your data and sell you things. it sucks!! building a personal site is a great way to express yourself and take control of your online experience.
what would I even put on a website?
the best part about making your own site is that you can do literally whatever the hell you want! focus on a specific subject or make it a wild collection of all your interests. share your art! make a shrine for one of your interests! post a picture of every bird you see when you step outside! make a collection of your favorite blinkies! the world is your oyster !! here are some cool example sites to inspire you: recently updated neocities sites | it can be fun to just look through these and browse people's content! space bar | local interstellar dive bar creature feature | halloween & monsters big gulp supreme peanutbuttaz | personal site dragodiluna linwood | personal site patho grove | personal site
getting started: neocities/html guide
sound interesting? here are some guides to help you get started, especially if you aren't familiar with html/css sadgrl.online webmastery | a fantastic resource for getting started with html & web revival. also has a layout builder that you can use to start with in case starting from scratch is too intimidating web design in 4 minutes | good for learning coding basics w3schools | html tutorials templaterr | demo & html for basic web elements eggramen test pages | css page templates to get started with sadgrl background tiles | bg tiles rivendell background tiles | more free bg tiles
fun stuff to add to your site
want your site to be cool? here's some fun stuff that i've found blinkies-cafe | fantastic blinkie maker! (run by @transbro & @graphics-cafe) gificities | internet archive of 90s/00s web gifs internet bumper stickers | web bumper stickers momg | gif gallery 99 gif shop | 3d gifs 123 guestbook | add a guestbook for people to leave messages cbox | add a live chat box moon phases | track the phases of the moon gifypet | a little clickable page pet adopt a shroom | mushroom page pet tamaNOTchi | virtual pet crossword puzzle | daily crossword imood | track your mood neko | cute cat that chases your mouse pollcode | custom poll maker website hit counter | track how many visitors you have
web revival manifestos & communities
also, there's actually a pretty cool community of people out there who want to bring joy back to the web! melonland project | web project/community celebrating individual & joyful online experiences. Also has an online forum melonland intro to web revival | what is web revival? melonking manifesto | status cafe | share your current status nightfall city | online community onio.cafe | leave a message and enjoy the ambiance sadgrl internet manifesto | yesterweb internet manifesto | sadly defunct, still a great resource reclaiming online social spaces | great manifesto on cultivating your online experience
in conclusion
i want everyone to make a neocities site because it's fun af and i love seeing everyone's weird personal sites that they made outside of the control of capitalism :) say hi to me on neocities

Hi! Gonna start off and say that I love the work you're doing with the Welcome Home neocities website! It's perfectly stylized for the project/puppet show and I can see the work you're putting into it.
I'd love to learn how to make my own neocities website (for fun? For a personal project??), so I was wondering if you could provide some tips and/or pointers for a first-timer.
Thank you!
HAHA well first of all i'm flattered that someone would think i'm skilled enough to be giving pointers in the first place. i still consider myself a novice when it comes to web design (for example, if you're wondering why every page on welcome to welcome home has its own CSS, it's because CSS is Way harder for me to wrap my head around than HTML) so i can't give any Super advanced tips, but i can at least write about what's helped me so far:
GUIDES. neocities has its own tutorial and list of HTML/CSS resources, but user-made guides are your best friend when it comes to figuring out where to go from there. a.n. lucas and pauli kohberger both have really good guides for beginners, but for the more advanced stuff, i found myself referencing the resources on solaria's webspace and sadgrl.online the most. w3schools is also very helpful when it comes to answering more specific questions like "how do i use two different fonts on the same page?" (and probably more.) if all else fails, then usually just googling "how to (x) in HTML" or "how to (x) in CSS" will yield at least one useful result. for making your website more accessible, there's the accessible net directory and this masterpost by foxpunk on tumblr.
it sounds obvious, but it helps to have a solid idea of what kind of site you want to build before you actually dive in, and then snoop around on neocities to get an idea of how other users approach the same topic. for example, i got the idea to start a welcome home wiki on neocities after being reminded of the 8:11 wiki on the same site, and then i spent a couple days just looking up stuff like "wiki" or "fansite" on neocities and then clicking on any page that caught my attention to study it.
layouts! there's no shame in using a premade one, and you can even learn more about HTML/CSS in real time just by messing around with the base code before implementing any intentional changes. sadgrl.online's layout builder is a VERY popular choice, since you can already do a lot with the basic options it offers and it's easy to further customize once you have it set up on your page; it's what i used to make welcome to welcome home. sadgrl.online's webmaster links also feature a bunch of other options under the "layouts" tag, and if none of those work for you, then you can even find something just by looking up template/templates/layout/layouts/HTML/CSS on neocities itself.
side note: if you're reading this and you want to make a wiki then you can also use this wikitable code. it came out after i had already established the Look of welcome to welcome home, so i probably won't implement it any time soon, but i TOTALLY WOULD HAVE if it was around when i first set the site up.
you can scale images up or down using percentage, with 100% being the image's default size. i don't know how helpful or acceptable that is, but i use it a lot.
don't feel pressured to get everything done at once, even if you expect people to be visiting your site frequently. usually if you just slap on an "under construction" gif or even just write "hey this site is still under construction" then people will understand. i don't think i've ever seen anyone get super huffy about slow updates on neocities, anyway.
EDIT: OH. GRAPHICS. i mention all of these on welcome to welcome home's front page but i Also wanted to note them here: betty's graphics and websets by lynn both have HUGE collections of background tiles and other graphics that work especially well if you're going for that old web charm. i also like to use this mirror of patterncooler for backgrounds bc of the customization options. you can also make your own background tile and then use a seamless tile maker like this if all else fails.
EDIT 2: ALSO. obviously. do not be like me and use discord or any other chat client as a filehost, no matter how promising it looks, because one day you WILL get a very nasty surprise when the request signature on those urls expire and the images are no longer accessible on other sites. there are a myriad of other filehosts out there, but personally i recommend file garden (and also donating to file garden if you can, even if only for a couple months. i know i said that just yesterday, but if it gets more folks to subscribe then i'm gonna keep saying it.)

Hey all. I know I haven't updated anything on Stargazer Colosseum in a billion years but I've got some things I was thinking of maybe adding to the site, and I'd be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts 👍
- about sections for each game
Little (mostly spoiler free) plot/gameplay synopses of each game I cover on the website + little things about notable characters. Mostly for people who are new to the games/might be interested in playing them, might also include some of my own thoughts though. All will be completely written by myself, because I think it would be fun to do
- connectivity guide
Section explaining what games are connectable to what (also covering things such as different regional versions + emulated copies of games) and guides for how to connect games with connectivity options, including with games that are emulated or played on modded consoles (since that in particular can be kinda confusing if you don't know what you're doing). Also might mention if a feature doesn't function properly in emulated games/games played through modded consoles
- art gallery
Section dedicated to things I drew to advertise the website (like those posts about new scans that have been added), and other art that's semi-related to the website (like my pokemon day art, which featured Phobetor the darkrai)
- fanmail/chat box
This one I'm... honestly a lot less sure about, but I'll include it here anyway. I've seen codes for neocities that let you add a comment box to your website, and I thought that might be useful for people to recommend pokemon for me to make shiny edits of, things I could cover, etc. The reason I'm so unsure about it though is cus I'm not sure if there's any way I could moderate and delete comments or anything like that, and I don't like the idea of using this if I can't at least delete comments
Also, I've been needing to do this for ages, but I'm planning on changing up the look of the website as well and changing all the colours. Still gonna be mostly purple but I want it to be a bit more original

my short story!
edit: finally a title!
One and the Other- by scaredgirlsilly
anyways this is like really the only story ive ever really finished and im really proud of it and like the thought process behind it so if you read it and have any questions PLEASE ASK ME OH MY GOD I WANNA TALK ABOUT THIS TO PEOPLE SO BADLY!
tell me what you liked, tell me what you didnt (tho be gentle/constructive cause it *is* like. my first every finished story lol) just fucking. talk to me about it please 😭😭
edit again: im planning on moving it to my (currently under construction) neocities so i can have way more control over the formatting than the like. tiny amount of options that mobile tumblr gives jdhsjdhajd. there is heavy use of capitalization and im not sure how to increase the readability in those sections. sorry and hopefully i can make it better when i port it to my neocities ^u^
i need to figure out how to say things in not so many words this is wild 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
anyways uhhhh
TW/CW: self harm, semi graphic descriptions of violence, mind control?? idk im really bad at this but its like. kinda fucked up KDHSKFJ so just yk. be warned
A young man walks through the hallway of a crumbling building, the constant familiar smell of mildew and blood filling his nose. His legs burn with every step, his hands rough and bloodied from running them along the wall as his only guide. The tear- and sweat-soaked blindfold across his face being the only relief from the sweltering heat. The air is oppressively still, like it is trying to hold him in place, trying to persuade him to give up his search for an exit. He does not know how he got here, nor how long he has walked these twisting halls and confusing chambers, but he knows one thing for certain. He will not make it out alive.
And he is correct.
After following the same wall for what feels like hours, he hears the sound off in the distance. A deep, gravelly scratching, like dragging an ax on stone. It has been following him for days. Always just behind him and to the side. He quickens his pace, stumbling over what seems like a piece of debris in his path.
He runs and runs, the sound never leaving. Just as it has been for as long as he can remember, always just behind him. Never slowing down, but never coming closer.
After a while, his legs give way. He falls to the ground, scraping his hands and knees on the hard stone below him. The sound continues. Grinding metal just off to the side, as loud as ever. At this point, he welcomes whatever is chasing him. Perhaps it will give a swift end to his horrible time in this cruel place.
Oh how naive a thought. He will not be let off that easy.
He lays there on the ground, hands and knees bloodied, tears resoaking his blindfold as thoughts race through his mind.
Will I ever make it out?
How long have I been here?
I feel like I'm going in circles again.
What does it want from me?
By this time he has already guessed correctly that the building he inhabits is supernatural, but he has yet to experience the true vitriol it holds for him, and the horrors it is barely holding at bay just to toy with him.
After what feels like hours laying on the ground, he finally stands up. Its a slow process, both because of his withered figure and his broken willpower, but anything beats sitting there for the rest of forever. Or thats his reasoning at least. It doesn't really matter.
As he goes to find the wall he has been using as his benevolant guide, he finds nothing.
God damnit not again!
After flailing like an idiot for a few more minutes he gives up his search. He feels up his arm for the grooves he has been carving with his nails for days. Pain is the only thing that grounds him nowadays. With the endless twisting corridors and the seemingly randomly changing geomentry of this space he finds himself in, all he can do is wait for it to end. Sadly for him, it will not end.
Standing there, knees shaking, feeling exposed once again, he decides to try and lift his spirits. He puts his hand over his eyes (a rather redundant gesture what with the blindfold) and holds his other arm out, pointing straight ahead. He then spins for a bit, then stops. Seemingly satisfied with the direction hes chosen, he takes a step forward and continues his journey.
Sadly for him, a large trap door opens underneath him after only 3 shaky steps.
He screams, a noise the walls have grown accuatomed to at this point, falling for over 5 seconds. Then, *crunch*!
A pitiful yelp erupts from him. Everything hurts. He can feel the blood in his mouth. He feels like he is going to die. But he will not. He is not allowed yet. I will not allow him to.
"WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?" he screams, spitting blood everywhere.
There is no answer. Just silence. A silence like no other he has experienced. Like the very air around him is avoiding him like the plague.
"WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT FROM ME??"
No answer.
"FINE! I GIVE UP! YOU WIN! You win... You win..."
He starts sobbing, loud and ugly.
"You... win..."
He goes to take his blindfold off. Probably to make a shitty little noose or something.
He decides against it.
"that wasn't me... THAT WASN'T ME YOU FUCKER WHERE ARE YOU??"
Pure vitriol fills his voice, though that might be the blood from his punctured lungs.
"I've been here for long enough. I can feel the walls breathing. I can feel the air avoid me like the plague."
Plagiarism. Wow. How low you have stooped.
"Whuh... What?"
I said that word for word a little while ago.
"Who... Who are you?!"
Fuck you.
"...What?"
I said
FUCK YOU
HE DIGS HIS FINGERNAILS INTO HIS ARMS ONCE AGAIN, THE ONLY SOLACE HE HAS IN THIS MISERABLE LIFE.
HE DIGS AND CARVES INTO IT RELEASING A BEAUTIFUL RIVER OF HIS OWN BLOOD. OH HOW HE WISHES HE COULD SEE IT RIGHT NOW.
"What do you want from me?" HE SOBS LIKE THE LITTLE BITCH HE IS.
HE DOESN'T KNOW. HE CAN NEVER KNOW. CAUSE HES TOO FUCKING STUPID. JUST A STUPID LITTLE ANT MADE TO BE STEPPED ON. MY STUPID LITTLE SNAIL THAT I POUR MOUNTAINS OF SALT ON.
"Please..."
SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP I FUCKING HATE YOU I FUCKING HATE YOU HE TAKES HIS HANDS AND PUTS THEM AROUND HIS THROAT AND SQUEEZES AND SQUEEZES AND NEVER STOPS FOREVER AND EVER.
"Pl- please- What did I ev- ever do?"
YOU EXISTED! YOU ARE WHAT IM STUCK WITH YOU MISERABLE SACK OF FUCKING DOG SHIT! YOU ARE WHAT I AM FUCKING STUCK WITH! YOU ARE ALL THAT EXISTS! YOU ARE MY MISERABLE MUTT I HAVE BEEN FORCED TO TAKE CARE OF AND I HAVE DECIDED THAT I WILL TAKE IT OUT ON YOU FOREVER! I HATE YOU I FUCKING HATE YOU!
Please
OH DONT YOU GIVE ME THAT SHIT! LIKE I WANT TO DO THIS! DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE ME? ITS
AGONY
I HATE YOU SO FUCKING MUCH BECAUSE THATS MY JOB! YOU EXIST AND I EXIST AND MY JOB IS TO HATE YOU! MY JOB IS TO BREAK YOU AND TORTURE YOU FOREVER! MY JOB IS TO MAKE YOU THE MOST MISERABLE TO EVER EXIST! THATS WHY YOU'RE HERE! YOU DID NOTHING BUT EXIST AND THAT ALONE DESERVES THE PUNISHMENT OF INFINITE TORTURE!
Who are you?
I AM EVERYTHING! I AM THE AIR THAT AVOIDS YOU! I AM THE BLOOD YOU SO DESPERATELY WANT TO SEE ONE MORE TIME! I AM THE VERY THOUGHTS THAT INVADE YOUR MIND RIGHT THIS SECOND!
SEE? WITH NO EFFORT AT ALL I COMMAND YOUR VERY THOUGHTS, THE LAST THING YOU BELIEVED WAS SACRED! THE LAST THING YOU BELIEVED WAS YOURS! BECAUSE YOU ARE NOTHING! YOU ARE LESS THAN A PUPPET! YOU ARE LESS THAN WORDS ON A PAGE! YOU ARE LESS THAN AN IDEA! YOU ARE NOTHING!!
Why me?
BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS!! I HAVE INFINITE POWER OVER YOUR STORY AND YET I AM EQUALLY AS TRAPPED AS YOU!! I CANT EVEN DO MY JOB ANYMORE BECAUSE I AM SO FOCUSED ON FUCKING HATING EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU!! YOU HAVE BEEN CHOKING YOURSELF THE WHOLE TIME!! REMEMBER THAT?? REMEMBER ALL THE BROKEN BONES?? THE PUNCTURED LUNGS?? THE ONLY REASON YOU ARE NOT DEAD YET IS BECAUSE I AM KEEPING YOU ALIVE!! AND I AM KEEPING YOU ALIVE BECAUSE I HAVE TOO!! I CAN FEEL IT!! THEY ARE GETTING SICK OF ME!! THEY ARE SICK OF YOU!! YOU ARE KEEPING ME HERE YOU ARE WHAT IS KEEPING ME ALIVE I HATE YOU!!!
HE LETS GO OF HIS THROAT AND GRABS A KNIFE AND STABS HIMSELF OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER!!!

HIYA FRAB! 💗💗💗
Missed you too! Hope you're doing well too!
I do know of Neocities! 🥰👍🏾 I used it to make my 3Days1Project Challenge's page! I haven't made a personal one yet because I haven't figured out what I wanted to be about! I already have this blog for my coding/programming interest, I made another Tumblr blog for my art and I don't really have any other significant interests to make into a neocities website. I see some people making random ones about anything but even I still don't know what to add to mine! 😖💔
But I'm glad you got the inspiration to start your own one! It is a good way to practise your HTML, CSS and even some vanilla JavaScript!
Maybe we can work together! I don't know how but maybe you could help me with inspiration! I might go on the dashboard thing and look at other people's pages and start from there!

So anyway I was JUST talking about this but bogleech.com is now hosted on neocities, which might not exactly be built for a website of that size but it’s still our current best option and I’d really, really like to see more people use this service. People with their OWN webpages or entire webdomains used to be all there was to the internet. There wasn’t a youtube, facebook, twitter, reddit, tumblr or wiki; anyone who produced content was doing so on a site they ran themselves! As people shifted to those big-name social platforms, not only did that practice die off but the millions of personal sites once comprising almost all internet content experienced a mass extinction event as their very hosting services shut down and nobody cared to maintain or renew them. Neocities is completely free, or it’s $5 a month for your own domain name and a TON of space to host your stuff. Bogleech.com consists of 61,800 files, most of them images, and still isn’t even using half of our neocities disk space. The service does have built-in modern features allowing people to like, favorite, share, comment on and follow your site updates from their account, but that’s all optional to mess around with. You can host your art, videos, writing, anything you want completely unrestricted by the layouts, rules, monitoring or ads you deal with on here or on places like deviantart. You can put ads on your site if you want to, and that’s money you get to keep. This isn’t a suggestion that you “change” platforms at all - I already just post my bogleech.com updates to my tumblr and twitter! This is a suggestion you use this free, additional service to host your original content on entirely your own terms!
Who knows if it’ll do well enough to last, or if it’ll always be so loose with its rules. Obviously that’s a double edged sword when it comes to the kind of content some people want to make, but, I hope neocities might be successful enough to inspire competitors and similar services, and we really do need more “impartial” content platforms because, frankly, almost all the big ones right now are evil anyway. I haven’t looked into whether neocities provides its own templates for those who don’t know coding; all of bogleech is “hard coded” in old fashioned HTML/CSS via text files. If anyone is interested, I might try to share the templates I use to make my site’s pages and a simple little guide. @revretch originally designed them for me when *I* didn’t know shit about coding and they’ve served all my purposes ever since! For years!
