In this 2008 video, young Wendy Sulca sings about alcoholism due to an absent husband and the suffering of working in mines. Though the young Sulca may be singing from a script rather than actual experience, it can be read as a “docu-ficción” of rural life in the Andes. The emphasis on mentioning various regions can be a tendency of collective experience.

Regina José Galindo is a internationally-recognized contemporary video artist from Guatemala. Some of her work superficially dialogues with the subject of Indigeneity in the United States (such as her video project America’s Family Prison), but can Galindo’s videoart be synonymous with “Indigenous video”?

MATANGI／MAYA／MIA

Tamil visual artist Matangi “Maya” Arulpragasm was born in London but grew up in her parents’ homeland of Sri Lanka since infancy. As an artist and musician she has created and collaborated in many of her internationally self-shot music videos. In her 2018 documentary MATANGI/MAYA/MIA, most of the footage is shot by herself in the UK, Sri Lanka, Los Angeles and elsewhere; though the film was complied or “curated” by her friend, Steve Loveridge. Arulpragasam’s amalgam of global media and locations illustrates an arbitrariness to the political labelling of art and artwork. Can her videos be considered “Indigenous video” in London, Sri Lanka, Tamil-speaking India or only those three exclusively? Is Indigenous video emphasized by generational time in a specific location?

i don't know.. just everything she does..  her attitude, her passion, her whole way of doing what she does it's just astounding! ha i love everything she's made+i'm so glad that i was lucky enough to meet her that day..  ah! god! hope you guys are enjoying the #MatangiMixtape the album isn't too far behind!
