Are Volkswagen’s Passat and Atlas the greenest vehicles? Read on…
What exactly does it mean to be green, or rather more precisely what is a green vehicle? To a lot of people the answer is simple, electric. While that may hold true in Quebec with its vast hydro electric infrastructure, but one could argue the point when it comes the coal fired electric power plants in the US and China. A fellow scribe refuses to do any reviews on Japanese vehicles until Japan stops killing whales, a bonafide environmental concern.
What brought all this about? Well I was parusing through one of my favorite car magazines, Dune Buggies and hot VWs the other day looking for an article on electronic ignition conversion for my old 1600 cc mill when I came across an article on VW’s first American car plant, the Westmoreland facility in Pennsylvania. Opened in 1976, it was the first foreign-owned auto assembly plant in the U.S. and was home to the popular Rabbit, the Rabbit Pickup and everyone’s favorite the GTI. Toyota and Honda followed soon bringing assembly stateside.
Lynn Anderson goes on about the plant’s success and its eventual demise in 1988 due to not only a drop in sales but also corporate politics. Over the years Westmore has gone through numerous tenants, industries and technologies. But this piece is about Volkswagen and VGA (Volkswagen Group of America) once again came to the realization and saw the benefits of manufacturing in the U.S. and in 2011 opened up their brand new shop in Chattanooga Tennessee. Sitting on 1,400 acres the 3.5 million sq. ft. is home to the Passat and Atlas.
Tumblr media
As Anderson says, VW learned a  lot from their first venture into the U.S. and are applying that to the Chattanooga plant. Chattanooga is the first and only LEED platinum certified automobile manufacturing plant in the world. A LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification means that a building (or community) is designed and built with strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: including sustainable site development, water savings energy efficiency… and VW has garnered the top rating. What does all this mean?
Chattanooga has a 66-acre solar park with 33,000 solar panels, an advanced painting process that reduces CO2 emissions, an eco-dry paint scrubber saving 20,000 gallons of water daily, mineral rock wool insulation reduces the building’s energy consumption and a specially designed white roof reflects heat. By reusing rainwater for cooling saves 650,000 gallons of water a year. Hydrogen fuel cell powered logistics vehicles are used throughout the plant. Furthermore the company maintains on-site protected wetlands and wildlife habitats.
So there you go, while I got a miserly 8L/100 kms of combined city highway driving and an impressive10.5L/100kms with the Atlas Cross Sport recently isn’t it reassuring to know that every step has been taken to make them in the most eco-friendly manufacturing facility in the world. Thank you VW.

Jeep's U.S. deliveries rose 20 percent to 82,641 in April, just eclipsing the record of 82,537 in April 2016. UPDATED: 5/1/18 3:47 pm ET U.S. auto sales fell about 4.8 percent in April on weaker car and fleet volume, and two fewer selling days, but the pace of sales remained strong as the spring selling season continued to unfold with some gusto.  The seasonally adjusted annualized sales rate for April came in at 17.15 million, Autodata Corp. estimated, slightly ahead of the 17 million forecast projected by analysts polled by Bloomberg. It marks the eighth straight month the pace of U.S. sales has topped 17 million. The March SAAR came in at 17.49 million, and the April 2017 SAAR was 17.08 million. With April in the books, U.S. sales of new cars and light trucks are now up an estimated 0.2 percent for the year. Overall, U.S. sales in 2018 are forecast to drop below 17 million for the first time in three years. Most 2018 sales estimates from analysts range from 16.7 million to 16.9 million units, though some analysts believe the favorable impact from U.S. tax reform may be greater than original forecasts.  The U.S. new-vehicle market, after seven straight annual gains capped by a record 2016, slipped 1.8 percent to 17.245 million units last year. Asterisks in April FCA US and the Volkswagen brand reported U.S. sales gains in April while Nissan volume plunged in the first month of reports missing the industry’s biggest player, General Motors. {{title}} {{abstract}} Read more > {{/content}} Jeep propelled FCA to its second monthly gain in a row after 18 straight declines. The VW brand rose for the fourth time this year. Ford and Toyota posted declines of 4 to 5 percent, Honda fell 9.2 percent, while Nissan, which has pledged to ease off its volume-chasing practices, dropped 28 percent. Volume dropped 8.4 percent at Hyundai-Kia. The results issued Tuesday stand out because of the absence of General Motors, which said April 3 that it will forsake monthly U.S. sales reports for quarterly. GM contends that in sharing information less frequently it will deliver a more-meaningful portrait of its performance. The company’s U.S. sales fell 2.5 percent to 3 percent in April, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. GM's results, shared with Bloomberg by people who asked not to be identified because the information is private, were in line with analysts’ average estimate for a 2.9 percent decline. The Automotive News Data Center estimates GM's sales dropped 2.7 percent last month. April was one of those asterisk-rich months cited by critics of monthly sales reports. It had two fewer selling days and one fewer weekend than April 2017, contributing to analysts’ projections that every major automaker would chalk up a decline. Company by company FCA US posted a 4.5 percent gain behind a surge in volume at Jeep. Sales at Jeep rose 20 percent to 82,641 -- an April record for the brand -- while deliveries slipped 9 percent at Ram, 18 percent at Chrysler and 45 percent at Fiat. Dodge, behind higher Journey and Caravan deliveries, broke a string of 10 straight monthly declines with a gain of 3.9 percent. FCA said retail sales last month slipped 1 percent to 143,995, while fleet accounted for 22 percent of overall deliveries. The Volkswagen brand also reported a gain, rising 4.5 percent for its fourth advance of the year. The new Atlas and redesigned Tiguan crossover accounted for 45 percent of VW’s volume. At Ford Motor Co., volume dropped 4.5 percent behind lower car and crossover/SUV demand. Sales fell 4.1 percent at the Ford division and 12 percent at Lincoln. Ford said April car deliveries slipped 15 percent and utility sales dropped 4.6 percent, while trucks edged up 0.9 percent. Because of the timing of orders, April fleet shipments fell 8.6 percent to 67,602, Ford said. Ford also said that it would not follow GM in switching to quarterly U.S. sales reports. "We've decided we're going to continue monthly, sales chief Mark LaNeve said in a call with reporters and analysts. “We think that's best for us right now." Nissan Motor Co. sales, behind broad declines in car and truck volume, fell 28 percent on a 29 percent drop at the Nissan brand and 17 percent at Infiniti. Nissan brand car sales slumped 35 percent and light-truck deliveries slipped 23 percent, the company reported. Volume dropped 11 percent at the Hyundai brand. Subaru's U.S. sales continued to rise, with volume up 1.5 percent in April. Kia posted a 5.2 percent drop in volume and Mazda declined 4.6 percent. At Mini, deliveries rose 7.2 percent. Among luxury brands, sales rose 3.8 percent at BMW, 2.1 percent at Audi, 0.7 percent at Porsche, 24 percent at Land Rover and 17 percent at Volvo. But demand fell 38 percent at Jaguar and 27 percent at Genesis. Factors Sales continue to be driven by healthy light-truck demand -- notably crossovers -- while car volume continues to weaken. Low but rising finance rates, moderate but rising gasoline prices as well as steady job gains are supporting industry sales, automakers and analysts say. The shift to crossovers, SUVs and pickups continues to lift transaction prices. The average new-vehicle retail transaction price for April was tracking at $32,544, a record for the month, surpassing the previous high of $31,414 set in April 2017, J.D. Power says. ALG estimates the average transaction price for a new light vehicle was $33,515 in April, up 2.7 percent from a year ago. Company outlook Ahead of Tuesday’s sales reports, April deliveries were projected by analysts polled by Bloomberg to fall at every major automaker. Volume was forecast to drop 2.9 percent at GM, 5 percent at Ford, 1.4 percent at FCA US, 6.1 percent at Toyota Motor, 7.3 percent at Honda Motor, 9.7 percent at Nissan Motor, 11 percent at Hyundai-Kia and 1.8 percent at VW-Audi. Spiffs The average new-vehicle incentive was tracking at $3,698 in the first three weeks of April, J.D. Power says, up $187 from a year ago. The spending increase continues to be driven by trucks and SUVs — up $426 — while average spending on cars is down $226. ALG estimates average new-vehicle incentives rose 8.5 percent to $3,736 last month compared with April 2017, with the Detroit 3 among the biggest average spenders on deals. Odds & Ends There were 24 selling days last month vs. 26 in April 2017 … Edmunds says the average monthly payment on a new vehicle averaged $535 in April compared to $509 in April 2017 and $463 in April 2013. The average amount financed increased to $31,318 in April compared to $30,315 last year and $26,679 in April of 2013. Down payments also increased, reaching $3,911 in April, compared to $3,770 in 2017 and $3,494 in 2013 ... J.D. Power says days to turn, the average number of days a new vehicle sits on a dealership lot before being sold to a retail customer, was 68 through April 18, down 2 days from the same period in April 2017 … Light trucks accounted for 67 percent of U.S. light-vehicle deliveries in the first three weeks of the month, the highest level ever recorded in April, J.D. Power says … Kelley Blue Book says the shift to light trucks is driving gains in estimated average transaction price for light vehicles -- $35,411 in April. New-vehicle prices increased by $710, up 2 percent, from April 2017, but down $99, or 0.3 percent, from March ... Incentives, expressed as a percentage of sticker price, stood at 10.3 percent in early March, matching or exceeding the 10 percent threshold for the 20th time over the last 21 months, J.D. Power says.Quotables “March benefited from an extra weekend this year, while April sales have been negatively affected by having one less selling weekend compared to 2017. When looking at the two months combined, retail sales will be down only modestly from last year.” -- Thomas King, J.D. Power. “The sales rate has been at or above 17 million since last August, suggesting the vehicle market is on sound footing. Along with positive economic news, buying conditions remain strong with robust credit availability and aggressive … vehicle incentives, and these conditions are expected to remain through much of 2018. In addition, overall sales volumes have been supported by notable fleet activity, which is running above last year’s rate.” -- Charlie Chesbrough, Cox Automotive “The auto industry is resilient and disciplined. It’s shrugged off most of the concerns to date. Going forward, it wouldn’t take much to turn delicate stability into more pronounced pullback. Keep an eye on the economy after 2018, as signals are increasing that a mild recession could be on the horizon.” -- Jeff Schuster, LMC Automotive April incentive outlays for U.S. ManufacturerApril 2018 forcastApril 2017March 2018Percentage change vs April 2017Percentage change vs March 2018BMW (BMW, Mini)$5,484$4,424$5,59524%-2%Daimler (Mercedes-Benz, Smart)$4,691$4,557$4,7752.9%-1.8%FCA (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat)$4,685$4,359$4,5797.5%2.3%Ford (Ford, Lincoln)$4,183$4,114$4,1671.7%0.4%GM (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC)$5,489$4,238$5,66729.5%-3.1%Honda (Acura, Honda)$1,652$1,809$1,556-8.7%6.1%Hyundai$2,961$3,135$2,875-5.5%3%Kia$3,894$3,247$3,85820%0.9%Nissan (Nissan, Infiniti)$3,788$3,903$3,772-2.9%0.4%Subaru$1,172$957$1,19922%-2.3%Toyota (Lexus, Scion, Toyota)$2,291$2,346$2,347-2.4%-2.4%Volkswagen (Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen)$3,537$4,008$3,618-12%-2.2%Industry$3,736$3,443$3,7958.5%-1.6% http://www.autonews.com/article/20180501/RETAIL01/180509997/u-s-sales-slip-in-april-saar-remains-healthy

2019 New and Future Cars
To hear some tell it, we’ll soon reflect on the past several years and the near future as the final halcyon days of machines made to be driven. The feedback we receive from you, our readers and fellow gearheads, along with a growing mainstream global narrative, illustrates an increasingly pessimistic view of automotive inevitability: a world dominated by urban transportation pods, ride-sharing programs, and of course the darkest cloud looming above the enthusiast community—soulless autonomous cars that might drive us to our destinations perfectly well but with nary a hint of the passion that binds millions of like-minded members of the car community together. Opinions, even well-educated ones, are all over the map when it comes to predicting the arrival of this Orwellian existence, but thankfully there are still far more than a handful of new and future cars to put your mind at ease.
This year we begin our New and Future Cars feature with seven hyper performers because, well, #NOBORINGCARS. From here, over the next few weeks, we will introduce you to and update you on what we believe are the most interesting and significant vehicles on the near horizon. The best news of all: Drivers will need to keep their eyes on the road and their hands and feet on the controls of each and every one of them.
McLaren Senna
“The Senna is such a whirlwind of g forces, so Krakatoa-like in its speed and braking power, in only a lap or two it could easily reduce a NASA astronaut to a trembling, babbling impersonation of Linda Blair.” That’s what our Arthur St. Antoine said recently after driving the Senna for several laps around the U.K.’s Silverstone Circuit—and when you look at the hardware McLaren blessed the Senna with, you know he was pedaling a savagely devastating car and not peddling hyperbole. Do not mistake the Senna for an upgraded 720S: The cars share some basic hardware, but this is an entirely new automobile—the pinnacle of McLaren’s Ultimate Series range. Legal for street use and limited to 500 copies, the Senna uses the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 found in the 720S, but improvements bump output to 789 hp and 590 lb-ft. A slightly reworked seven-speed dual-clutch paddle shifter carries over. Top speed is 211 mph, but that’s not what this carbon-fiber McLaren, named for late three-time Formula 1 champ Ayrton Senna, is about. With its active aerodynamics, almost 1,800 pounds of downforce, and 2,900-pound curb weight, track-day lap records should be very afraid. After driving it, we know the F1 legend would be proud of his namesake. And if, somehow, it’s still not enough for you, McLaren plans to build 75 track-only Senna GTRs that will lap even quicker, priced at about $1.4 million each. Not interested in the Senna, whose looks might not be everyone’s cup of racing fuel? By year’s end we expect to see McLaren finally unveil the long-talked-about 243-mph hybrid-powered BP23 three-seater. Think of it as the modern follow-up to its legendary F1 supercar of the ’90s. It should land late this year.
On sale: Sold out (delivery late 2018) Base price: $958,966
Dallara Stradale
Sure, Ferrari and McLaren are famous race teams that also build some of the world’s best performance cars, but what enthusiast doesn’t want a car from a company still known mostly for building top-level dedicated racing chassis such as IndyCar’s present-day IR-18? That’s where Italian constructor Dallara comes in with its Stradale, the first road car to bear its name. This is a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis covered in carbon bodywork, and one available in a doorless configuration (among others)—you don’t want to add weight while adversely affecting aerodynamics, do you? No, you don’t. And speaking of aero, up to 1,800 pounds and change of downforce mean cornering forces can exceed 2 g, with the approximately 1,900-pound (dry weight) Stradale also boasting 395 hp and 369 lb-ft from its 2.3-liter Ford EcoBoost four-cylinder, channeled through either a six-speed manual or single-clutch automatic transmission; that should be good for 0-60 mph in the low 3-second range. The bad news: Dallara didn’t want to float the tens of millions it would have cost to certify the Stradale for sale in the U.S.
On sale: Now (not in U.S.) Base price: $182,000 (est)
Brabham BT62
The past year or so has seen more than its share of new mid-engine hypercars, including Mercedes-AMG’s Project One and Aston Martin’s Valkyrie, and there are plenty more in the pipeline. From ex-Formula 1 driver and Le Mans winner David Brabham’s Brabham Automotive comes the carbon-fiber-bodied BT62, a track-day kraken inspired by his famous late father Jack’s third F1 championship, in 1966—the only F1 title won by a competitor while driving a car of his construction. The BT62 gets a six-speed sequential gearbox and a 5.4-liter naturally aspirated V-8 from another maker (Brabham hasn’t identified it), which Brabham pumps up to send 700 hp and 492 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. Handling should be off the leash thanks to Michelin slick tires, a dry weight of 2,143 pounds, and an alleged maximum downforce figure of more than 2,600 pounds. Brabham plans to build 70 examples for the 70th anniversary of Jack’s first race, with the initial 35 copies featuring liveries honoring the 35 Grand Prix wins achieved by Brabham race cars. Driver coaching is part of the buyer’s package—a good thing, too, since traction control is the BT62’s only “driver aid.” The car’s name is an extension of the BT60B designation given to Brabham’s final Grand Prix car, in 1992.
On sale: Now (delivery late 2018) Base price: $1.4 million (est)
Fittipaldi EF7
Add the name Fittipaldi to the others steeped in racing tradition that now seek to stick a Nomex-covered toe into the high-performance road-car arena. Two-time Formula 1 champion, two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, and one-time IndyCar champion Emerson Fittipaldi has long dreamed of building a car bearing his name, and the EF7 he unveiled at the 2017 Geneva auto show is the result. Developed in conjunction with Pininfarina and racing-centric German engineering company HWA, which will build the cars, Fittipaldi Motors’ shark-styled track-day toy will be crafted to the tune of 39 examples, the number you get when totaling Emmo’s F1 and IndyCar wins and championships. No surprise, it features a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis and carbon body panels, with weight targeted to come in at less than 2,300 pounds. Power comes from a 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V-8 making 600 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque, with a racy 9,000-rpm redline; 0-60 mph should happen in less than 3 seconds. Like a purpose-built race car, the six-speed sequential gearbox is a stressed part of the chassis. Similar to the Brabham BT62, buyers will get professional instruction—in this case from Fittipaldi himself. A street-legal version could be in the offing down the road once all track-spec cars are delivered.
On sale: Now Base price: $1.5 million (est)
Hennessey Venom F5
Building off the success of the tremendously fast Venom GT that claimed the production car speed record five years ago (though Bugatti would quarrel with that), the forthcoming Venom F5 is the Texas performance peddler’s second hypercar. Compared to the Lotus-based Venom GT, the F5 is a ground-up, clean-sheet design with a bespoke chassis. A unique 8.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 spits out what Hennessey claims to be 1,600 hp and 1,300 lb-ft, managed by either a seven-speed single-clutch semi-automatic or six-speed manual transmission. For the very brave (or the very stupid), the F5 will reportedly top out at 301 mph.
On sale: 2019 Base price: $1.6 million (est)
Ruf SCR
You can be forgiven for thinking this is Ruf’s latest package for the Porsche 911 at first glance. Despite its very, very Porsche-esque silhouette, the SCR is the second car Ruf has built from the chassis up. As expected of Ruf, the SCR is incredibly high-tech, using a carbon-fiber monocoque and integrated rollcage adorned with a pushrod suspension and carbon-fiber body panels. It’s fast, too—a Ruf-designed 4.0-liter water-cooled flat-six sends 503 hp and 347 lb-ft to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. All this power pushes just 2,755 pounds, allowing those with access to the autobahn to touch 199 mph.
On sale: 2019 (est) Base price: $800,000 (est)
Pininfarina H2 Speed
With the traditional role of the coachbuilder and external design house all but disappearing in the face of in-house operations, legendary Italian studio and longtime Ferrari partner Pininfarina has been increasingly striking out on its own, most recently with a lean, green hypercar known as the H2. In place of a massive turbocharged V-8 or V-12, the H2 uses a set of four “race-spec” electric motors outputting a combined 643 hp at 13,000 rpm, fed by a 250-kWh hydrogen fuel cell system. Pininfarina says the H2 will hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and top out at 186 mph. Just 12 will be made, restricted to use at a few track days hosted by Pininfarina around the world

Best in the Biz: Volkswagen’s 2018 Atlas and Tiguan SUVs to Come With Six-Year/72,000-Mile Transferable Warranty
–
Volkswagen has announced that its all-new 2018 Atlas and Tiguan will come with the lengthiest bumper-to-bumper warranty among SUVs sold in the United States when they arrive at dealers in the coming months. The coverage for six years or 72,000 miles, whichever comes first, includes powertrain components and is transferable to subsequent owners at no cost.
–
After soldiering on for many years with the Tiguan as its lone crossover entry, VW finally is poised to attract a much wider swath of SUV buyers with the competitively sized and priced three-row Atlas and the much larger next-generation Tiguan. And it needs a compelling point of differentiation to get shoppers’ attention in these hotly contested segments. Volkswagen Group of America president and CEO Hinrich Woebcken said that the company has heard repeated feedback from crossover buyers that total cost of ownership is an important metric during the consideration process, something this warranty should help to lower.
–
–
Extended-warranty coverage is something that Hyundai and Kia have used to great effect during their rapid growth in the United States since the launch of their America’s Best Warranty program in 1998. But that 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage only applies to the original owner. The transferable bumper-to-bumper coverage is shorter, at five years or 60,000 miles.
–
For the Atlas, Volkswagen boasts that the warranty bests those offered on competitors such as the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Nissan Pathfinder, which carry three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranties and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage. Those same warranties are offered by the Tiguan’s competitors, such as the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4.
–
As is typical, normal wear items such as tires and brakes are not covered under VW’s new warranty. And this longer coverage does not extend to the brand’s car lineup or, indeed, to the current-generation Tiguan, which will continue to be sold as the Tiguan Limited alongside the new model.

Woebcken said the SUV warranty reflects the automaker’s confidence in its forthcoming Atlas and Tiguan. “We’re confident in the reliability and workmanship of these SUVs, and we want our customers to be confident in their purchase,” Woebcken stated in a release.
