12 Days Of Christmas
(Draco Malfoy Style)
Tumblr media
Image not mine
A few things to note: bulleted text is the original song line, italicized chat font text is Draco's feelings about the line, and the indented text is Draco's version of the line!
I was going for a head cannon style with this one but I probably failed...
All dividers are by @firefly-graphics
Hope you enjoy! -Ava
Tumblr media
Draco talking to Blaise:
D: Did you hear Snape today? Apparently the new girl Y/N or whatever is like a potions prodigy, like Snape was actually impressed with her potion.
B: Don't tell me you're crushing on her just because she's better than you at potions.
D: She's a half-blood from America, and she's gorgeous, intelligent, snarky, and yet also somehow kind. She's fucking perfect is what she is. I just, I've liked her since she first set foot in the Great Hall.
B: Just have fun, and do something Christmassy, at least I think that's what she called their holiday.
D: That's it! The carols she was singing while decorating the common room, there was that Twelve Days of Christmas song. I'll do something fun for those days.
Tumblr media
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree
Yeah, nope, not getting her that… but maybe…
On the first day of Christmas, I gave to my true love… an invitation to the Yule Ball
On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me, two turtle doves
Ok, that one isn't too bad, but improvements must be made
On the second day of Christmas I gave to my true love… two golden birds made of light, Avis!
On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me, three French hens
Ummm, what, why, just why?
On the third day of Christmas I gave to my true love… three poinsettias
On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me four calling birds
What is it with this song and birds?
On the fourth day of Christmas I gave to my true love… four barking cruppies
On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me five golden rings
See, that one I like, that one I really like, however I can still outdo it
On the fifth day of Christmas I gave to my true love five golden snitches!
On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me six geese a laying
Oh for Merlins sake, can they quit it with the birds?
On the sixth day of Christmas I gave to my true love… six chocolate frogs
On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me seven swans a swimming
That's actually kind of romantic, like a swan dance
On the seventh day of Christmas I gave to my true love… seven fountains performing with music and lights and colors (every ounce of my transfiguration and potions knowledge was necessary)
On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me eight maids a milking
Nope, nope, nope, absolutely not, she's a transfer from America and she's best friends with Hermione even though y/n’s a Slytherin
On the eighth day of Christmas I gave to my true love… eight house elves' freedom
On the ninth day of Christmas my true love gave to me nine ladies dancing
Good, but I have a better idea, and I think she'll like it
On the ninth day of Christmas I gave to my true love… nine mooncalves dancing under the stars
On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave to me ten lords a leaping
My day to show off my skills!
On the tenth day of Christmas I gave to my true love… ten dancing lessons (she did ask)
On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me eleven pipers piping
Ooh, I can work with that!
On the eleventh day of Christmas I gave to my true love… eleven frogs a singing with the choir
On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me twelve drummers drumming
Twelve battle drummers maybe?
On the twelfth day of Christmas I gave to my true love… twelve durmstrang students dueling (with fire)
And that was my successful Fourth year, I enjoyed it, and so did y/n, enough that she agreed to be my girlfriend.

Want to hear y/n's reactions to each gift? Let me know in the comments or by liking this post!
As always, I hope you enjoyed! Happy Holidays!

Readerly Exploration #5        March 13, 2019
Course Reading: Tompkins—Chapter 9, “Promoting Comprehension: Text Factors”
The Big Take Away: Addressing the text factors of comprehension requires teachers to equip students with knowledge of genres, text structures, and text features.
Nugget: My favorite part of the chapter was Tomkins’ section on the elements of story structure. While I am familiar with all five elements, I appreciated how she broke them down into smaller categories. For example, conflict occurs in four ways: between character and nature, between a character and society, between characters, and within a character. Characters are developed in four ways: appearance, action, dialogue, and monologue. Setting has four dimensions: location, weather, time period, and time, and lastly, point of view has four viewpoints: first-person, omniscient, limited omniscient, and objective. Through all of her detailed and organized descriptions, I felt much more confident in my ability to teach the elements of story structure. Also, if I get the chance, I would love to use some of the stories from her booklist that illustrate these elements!
Readerly Exploration Experience:
For chapter nine, my readerly habit was to read a wide variety of genres and formats of texts to grow in my knowledge and experience as a reader. The corresponding task I chose to complete was finding texts from different genres and formats and connecting them to the course reading. Before discussing these texts, I would like to explain why I chose this task. The vignette in the beginning of the chapter described a 4th grade class’ study on frogs. Instead of only learning about frogs in science, their teacher, Mr. Abram, worked very hard to incorporate reading and writing. One way he did this was by providing students with frog books from three different genres: stories, nonfiction, and poetry books. Reading this vignette reminded me of my summer job, when I taught 2nd grade students about monarch butterflies. However, unlike Mr. Abram, I focused heavily on science. I gave students a PowerPoint presentation, had them fill out a life-cycle worksheet, and let them watch a monarch caterpillar transform into a butterfly. While I think my students learned a lot from this experience, I now realize that I missed an opportunity to provide them with rich literary experiences. Now, fast forward a few months, and I have been officially approved to lead a monarch butterfly camp in summer of 2019. This camp will provide rising 2nd to 5th grade students with an opportunity to learn about these amazing creatures. Activities will include building monarch habitats, going on nature hunts to find eggs and caterpillars, and planting milkweed patches to increase food supply.
Given that is an enrichment camp, I want to be very intentional about providing students with access to learning materials. This brings me back to my readerly exploration task. I thought it would be interesting to identify several monarch butterfly books from different genres and formats and start a wish list for my camp. Because I did not have access to a library at the time of this exploration, I relied on YouTube read alouds, online book previews, and book reviews. By the end of my search, I had created a list of several wonderful books from the genres of stories, nonfiction, and poetry!
Stories
Velma Gratch & The Way Cool Butterfly by Alan Madison
Gotta Go! Gotta Go! by Sam Swope and Sue Riddle
Hurry and the Monarch by Antoine O. Flatharta
Nonfiction
Great Migrations: Butterflies by Laura F. Marsh
How to Raise Monarch Butterflies: A Step-by-Step Guide for Kids by Carol Pasternak
The Monarch: Saving Our Most-Loved Butterfly by Kylee Baumle
Poetry
Butterfly Eyes and Other Secrets of the Meadow by Joyce Sidman
The Monarch’s Progress by Avis Harley
Seeds, Bees, Butterflies, and More! by Carole Gerber
In addition to finding these books, I wanted to draw connections between them and the course reading. Here are some of my ideas...
1. Initially, I labeled the three stories I found as realistic fiction. However, I started second guessing myself because the animals talk. I went to google to try to solve my problems, and it turns out a lot of other people are confused by this as well. One website proposed that if animals talk to humans, it’s fantasy, but if animals talk to other animals and act like typical animals, its realistic fiction. If that rule is correct, my initial thinking was correct!
2. While I don’t want to explicitly teach ELA at this summer camp, I could use the conflicts in the stories to discuss the challenges that monarch face. For example, in Hurry and the Monarch, the monarch faces a conflict with nature, as she must migrate according to the weather.
3. The nonfiction books are full of expository text structures that could be displayed using graphic organizers. For example, the characteristics of a monarch butterfly could be displayed in a web, the life cycle of a monarch butterfly could be sequenced in a numbered list, and the decline of monarch butterflies could be shown in cause and effect boxes. Since this is a hands-on summer camp, I would not want campers to complete these graphic organizers on their own. If anything, I would have a group discussion where we fill in the organizer together, and then, I would connect this information to a fun, interactive activity.
4. Seeds, Bees, Butterflies, and More! is a collection of poems for two voices. Several teacher reviews said that students loved reading this book with their peers. I think this could offer campers a fun, collaborative, and educational reading experience!
5. The poetry books could definitely be challenging for my younger campers to understand. They are full of poetic devices that they have not yet been taught. That being said, I think my older campers could really benefit from these poems. Personally, I am always emotional when I see a butterfly hatch. I am continually blown away by God’s creativity and the effort and detail he put into our world. These poems and the rich language they use could serve as a wonderful tool for campers to channel their thoughts and emotions on butterflies.
Overall, I found this readerly exploration to be both interesting and enjoyable. Not only did I get myself super excited about monarch camp, but I did it while learning course content! I am really excited to integrate these books into my summer camp and give campers access to a wide variety of genres. I hope they have just as much fun reading them as I did!
Multimedia Extension:
Click here to view the read aloud of Hurry and the Monarch by Antoine Flatharta!
This is loosely related to my readerly exploration, but I had to include this video. When I was teaching my 2nd graders about monarch butterflies, I decided to use this song as a brain break. Little did I know that my students would ask me to play it every day for the rest of the summer. Needless to say, this song became the anthem of our classroom, and I am pretty sure it will be stuck in my head for the rest of my life. ENJOY!!

I didn’t mean to leave people hanging on the latest Baccano! merch I received in the mail on Monday - sleep deprivation plus realizing you’re supposed to be at a D&D session when you’re at the library is a bad combo.
In any case, like @toushindai realized from the kanji, this is a Settings Research Collection for the 2007 Baccano! anime adaptation. The three images above are scans I did at the library of the front and back covers and the very first illustration - a height sheet for the main cast. The front cover edges are slightly creased, owing to the fact that this is a used copy, but the illustrations themselves are in fine condition.
Edit: Tumblr quality does not represent actual quality of those scans, and those scans aren’t even the best scans I did of them.
Now, there should be a good number of you who recognize that height sheet; after all, @the-baccano-warehouse shared it and other height + model sheets once upon a time on their own blog, and I’ve uploaded those already-online scans to the Baccano! Wiki here. However... Those weren’t the only illustrations that were done for the anime, something I’ve verified thanks to now owning this collection.
Going over the collection again... If I have this right, the following sheets aren’t included in the group of online scans I linked above:
Previously Unseen Character Sheets
Model Sheet: Firo; full-body
Group Sheet: The Three Gandor Brothers; full-bodies
Group Sheet: Full-body designs for 9 members of Szilard’s elderly coterie
Model Sheet: Molsa Martillo
Model Sheet: Kanshichirou Yaguruma
Model Sheet: Randy and Pezzo
Model Sheet: Seina
Model Sheet: Lia Lin-Shan
Model Sheet: Faces for Fang, Jon, and Melody
Model Sheet: Faces for Nick, Donny, and Jack
Model Sheet: Faces for Dune and Vicky
Model Sheet: Faces for Placido and the two Ep 4 Russos
Group Sheet: Full-bodies for Spike, Goose, and three dining car Lemures
Model Sheet: Faces for Spike and Goose
Model Sheet: Faces for three dining car Lemures
Model Sheet: Manfred, Natalie, and Mary Beriam
Model Sheet: Tony and Lemur conductor
Model Sheet: Benjamin and Samantha
Model Sheet: Carol
Model Sheet: Bartolo Runorata
Model Sheet: Gustavo Bagetta
Model Sheet: Begg Garott (1711)
Model Sheet: Denkurō Tōgō (1711; just says Tōgō)
Model Sheet: Victor Talbot (1711; I LOVE this one)
Model Sheet: Bill Sullivan and Edward Noah (poor Donald isn’t there)
Group Sheet: Full-bodies for five of the Advena Avis alchemists
Previously Unseen Setting Sheets (all of them, basically, except the FPF engine and car)
Alveare exterior
Alveare honey shop interior
Alveare speakeasy interior
Alveare speakeasy bar
Coraggioso basement: sitting area? (view of tables and chairs; can see entrance to billiards room)
Coraggioso basement: Billiards Room + bar (facing previous dining area)
Coraggioso basement: Billiards Room, facing the opposite direction (towards the Gandors’ office)
Firo’s Apartment: a whole layout of the living room (the place where Ennis is writing her letter in episode 02)
Flying Pussyfoot: First Class cabin
Flying Pussyfoot: Dining car
Flying Pussyfoot: (First Class?) Corridor design
Flying Pussyfoot: Corridor with the water closet (the one Mary hides in)
Flying Pussyfoot: (Third Class?) Corridor design
Flying Pussyfoot: Third Class car (the one with the booths that the Rail Tracer finds Czes in)
Grand Central Station: Overhead layout of both floors
Grand Central Station: View of ticket counters
Station/Switch point: View of Track 29
There weren’t any Advena Avis setting drawings in this one, sad to say; I’d hoped for a layout of the Advena Avis floors/interior (cabins....etc). However, that’s a lot of illustrations to enjoy and discover, you know? I particularly love Victor’s model sheet (it’s so him) and Begg’s, and I’d always wanted to see Akira Ito’s setting drawings ever since he’d said he paid careful attention to layout designs.
Speaking of, this also finally answers my longstanding curiosity over what he meant when he said he drew Firo’s apartment; while it’s not the entire apartment, it’s the whole living room and that’s definitely more than you’d think he needed to do.
(I was also surprised that there wasn’t a 1932!Elmer model sheet? He moves around enough in the OVAs that you’d think there’d be one. Same for 1932!Sylvie...but since Graham and Shaft aren’t in here either, I guess this collection is just for the first 13 episodes.)
I’ll see if I can scan all of them before the end of the month; scanning at high quality takes a while, so we’ll see. Ideally I’ll scan all of the drawings, including the ones we already have scans for, because having higher quality versions is never a bad thing. Edit: Although, this is hindered by the fact that you can see other illustrations ‘bleeding’ through the scans... But I’m not about to tear all these illustrations out, Lord know.
I took a few photos to show you (e.g. how big the drawings are + sneak peeks at some of the scans above), so I’ll try and upload them in a separate post.

Battle of The Walking Dead - Batch#3 Quarter-Finals (featuring Rick, Carol, Eugene & Negan)
Were we shocked by the results of the Batch#3 heats?  Probably not.  Will we be shocked by the results of the quarter-finals?  Well, that's up to you!
The Battle of The Walking Dead pushes forward as eight characters await your votes, to see who will prove popular enough to make it to the semis.  All you have to do is head over to twitter, add procrastinalien, and vote for your favourite characters from THE WALKING DEAD and FEAR THE WALKING DEAD.
Who are the options?  Read on...
RICK GRIMES
Tumblr media
The lead character from THE WALKING DEAD was always going to be a popular one, not least thanks to a stunning performance from actor Andrew Lincoln.  It's no surprise he received more votes that any other characters in this batch so far.  Rick was our way into the zombie apocalypse, from episode one, and we've followed his adventure right up until season nine... which will be his last!
AARON
Tumblr media
Ross Marquand joined the cast of TWD back in season five, when Aaron met with the main group and took them back to his home - the Alexandria Safe Zone.  Marquand was promoted to the main titles in season eight, and will continue into (and maybe beyond?) season nine.
TARA CHAMBLER
Tumblr media
We first met Tara in season four, when she aligned herself up with The Governor.  That was a bit of a mistake, but Glenn took her under his wing and she became a part of the main gang.  Alanna Masterson was promoted to the main titles in season seven, and continues to battle the walkers and other nasty types.
CAROL PELETIER
Tumblr media
A bit of fan favourite, Melissa McBride's brilliant performance has made Carol a staple in the series.  She was one of the original gang, with McBride getting promoted to the main titles in the fourth season.  Heading into season nine, she's one of the longest running characters, and will be one of the lead females stepping up once Lincoln goes.  Not bad considering comic Carol died years ago.
DR EUGENE PORTER
Tumblr media
He's a character that can be so frustrating sometimes, especially in recent seasons when he turned his back on the group to save his own backside.  He did end up kind of saving them in the longterm though... so all is forgiven, right?  Actor Josh McDermitt was introduced in season four of THE WALKING DEAD and promoted to main cast in season seven.
NEGAN
Tumblr media
Some might disagree, but I think Jeffrey Dean Morgan was a brilliant addition to the series, which great charisma that almost makes Negan likable. Negan has been the series villain since his appearance in the season six finale where he killed off Glenn and Abraham with Lucille, his barbed bat.  He starts season nine a prisoner in the 'brave new world'.
SIDDIQ
Tumblr media
A new character only just introduced in season eight.  He's a doctor, which is nice.  However, Siddiq, was also the reason Carl Grimes died... so he's had a troubled entry.  Avi Nash returns in the role for season nine.
SIMON
Tumblr media
Under Negan, Simon was the biggest, baddest of the Saviors.  Some might say he was the baddest, as he's pretty unpredictable, and loves killing people on mass.  He challenged Negan's leadership and died for it.  Steven Ogg was a popular addition to the cast and some would have liked Simon to have survived season eight over Negan...
Those are the options.  Which four get to the next round?  You decide!  You've got three days to vote!

Pentatonix: A Contemporisation of The  First Noel
The First Noel is a popular Christmas Carol sung from ages old till today in the 21st century across the world, mainly during Christmas to celebrate the birth of Christ in the Christian Faith, although in more secular groups, it is regarded as a seasonal song.
This essay will trace the origins of The First Noel and its significance to the themes of Christ and the celebration of Christmas, from the beginning of its existence to a modern-day interpretation of it by a popular A capella group (Pentatonix) that now performs it to a globalised audience.
The History of Carols
To begin, a carol, simply put, is a festive folk tune. Christmas carols are mostly similar, except they revolve around Christian ideologies. There is much dispute over when exactly The First Noel was composed and performed, but it is largely agreed upon that its first official date of publication was in Carols, Ancient and Modern (1823), in London. The publication is a collection of popular Christmas Carols, edited, arranged, and compiled by William Sandys, and Davies Gilbert. Depite that, the actual origins come from far before the early 19th century, between the era of classical antiquity and the dark ages, where churches held prominent power.
To understand how the form of a Carol has evolved to its universally adored figure today, its relationship with the church – the sanctified figurehead most people associate with Christmas Carols – must first be clarified.
During the earlier days of the Roman Catholic Church in Europe, ‘Paganism’ referred to all beliefs outside of its body, in basic terms. The challenge of classifying Paganism into a single religion lies in its inclusion of multiple traditions with ways of life heavily influenced by nature, which unfortunately, are associated with witches, dark rituals, and cultists due to misrepresentations by current-day media and the early church who were the first to invent the label ‘Pagan’, which was originally Paganus -  as translated in the Latin Dictionary by Charles T. Lewis and Charles Short as ‘Of or belonging to the country or to a village, rustic’. To summarise, the meaning of ‘Pagan’ can range from anything between a commoner residing in the outskirts of town to an actual follower of the Pagan beliefs.
Due to its dissenting relationship with the church, the meaning of the word ‘Pagan’ has fluctuated and changed greatly in the time since its existence. Nonetheless, the Church at that time abhorred these Carols that the Pagans sang as they were a celebration of an entire community of beliefs that went against the Catholic Christian faith.
In an article written on BBC, Burton-Hill wrote that singing and related Christmas festivities were abhorrent and sinful because they viewed celebrating Christ’s birth on 25 December as a ‘commercial’ tradition that derived – with no biblical justification – from the Roman Catholic Church, threatening their core Christian beliefs as nowhere had it been written that God had called upon mankind to celebrate Christ’s nativity in such manners. In 1644, an Act of Parliament effectively banned the festival. Following up in June 1647, the Long Parliament passed an ordinance confirming the abolition of the feast of Christmas.
Despite difficult circumstances, carols have persisted from the dark ages far into the 18th century, mostly by word of mouth, given that they did not exist in the form of a score sheet as the singers of these tunes – peasants – were often illiterate.
Fast forward into the 19th century, The First Noel is collated and published with the introduction of lyrics for the first time in history under Carols, Ancient and Modern, as mentioned before. From there, it grows into the tune of The First Noel that the world is familiar with today.
In between the 20th and 21st century, The First Noel has been performed several times and published in many commercial Christmas albums in the style of the singer in question, a few notable ones being Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and more recently, Pentatonix.
A Contemporary Interpretation of The First Noel
Pentatonix is an American-based performance group consisting 5 vocalists - Avi Kaplan, Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Mitch Grassi, which reflects the pentatonic scale of five notes.
The group first rose to fame after winning NBC’s The Sing-Off in 2013. Since then, they have toured all around the world, including Singapore, where they will return again in 2017 as part of Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix’s Headlining Acts as a contemporary pop group performing in the style of A Capella singing.
A Capella is a form of music-making where a group (or at times, a soloist) of voices are unaccompanied by any other instrument in performing a piece of music
Originating from Gregorian Chants first sung in the Renaissance period in Roman Catholic churches across Western continents and composed by anonymous groups of people whose names are now lost to time, the structure – including notation, composition, and distribution of voice – has evolved greatly between the time of Gregorian Chants to what A Capella is today, though both forms still keep to the rules of producing music purely with the human voice.
With that introspective, alike Gregorian Chants, The First Noel we know today is vastly different from what it was.
For comparative purposes, the ‘original’ The First Noel that shall be used as a study against Pentatonix’s cover will be the version published in Carols, Ancient and Modern (1823).
Length-wise, the original The First Noel is much shorter, with only one stanza of combined lyrics and scores for piano and an accompanied voice:
The first Nowell that the Angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
In a cold winter’s night that was so deep
Nowell Nowell
Nowell Nowell
Born is the King of Israel
Pentatonix’s cover is the version inherited from the New English Hymnal, with extended lines as it has already shifted from its original form, which was meant for a singular voice sung along with the piano based from its score sheet.
The New English Hymnal (1986) has rearranged The First Noel to fit the four-part harmony (Soprano Alto Tenor Bass) structure that majority of church choirs are familiar with singing, and Pentatonix has taken an excerpt of that with the lyrics mentioned beforehand along with the following:
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
The old rendition of The First Noel lacks a contemporary flair introduced to its more recent cover by Pentatonix’s usage of the SATB voices interchangeably. In its predecessor’s form, there is no presence of the SATB format, given that it was not produced to be sung by four voices at that time. Instead, it resembles a series of tonal harmonies with a bass constructed purely to harmonise with the melody.
Pentatonix has the luxury of 5 flexible voices that range between a mezzo soprano to a bass along with a beatboxer who all actively play different parts, although they overlap responsibilities with melodies often being either shared all switched amongst all voices involved in the song as a stylistic decision to brand themselves as a performance group with this as their specialty. Sopranos are often the main skeleton of a melody that people hear as what the tune encompasses. The Bass Line provides the harmony to match the main tune sung by the Soprano while the Alto and Tenor are known as harmonic fillers that flesh out decoratively to give finishing touches and to fill up what otherwise would sound empty in its wake.
Based on a video on TIME, Pentatonix has broken down rearrangements for A Capella in a very simple form – introduction of the beatboxer to establish a ‘groove’, which would be a common tone constructed by beatboxing, the emptiness amongst the beats filled up by a bass line, followed by background part(s) that would also be sounds made by the mouth instead of actual lyrics, then a harmonisation to match said background part before the proper solo lyrics of the song are introduced. Decorations to individual songs are added along the way to the end of the arrangement to provide a uniquely ‘Pentatonix’ personality to each cover.
Disregarding just the altered medium of presentation, the team behind Pentatonix has completely unwrapped and redressed the original The First Noel in a fashion that was impossible in the 19th century, utilising aural and visual communication skills via publicity through social media, in the entire package of a music video on YouTube as its method of delivery to its audience.
Pentatonix’s The First Noel is targeted to its audience of a general age between early teenage years to late adulthood. Other than performing live at concerts and touring around the world, as primary consumers of the world-wide web, their audiences have easy access to YouTube, where similar covers have been published on their channel, granting them the ability to rewatch the video repeatedly to their heart’s content at no cost, thus allowing the band to monitor their fans’ reactions to everything they do from a statistical viewpoint as YouTube collects data on its watchers with precise accuracy.
Compare this to the target audience of the original The First Noel, or even the New English Hymnal’s version of only churchgoers. The target audience has changed incredibly, from being a song sung in churches to celebrate the birth of Christ to now being marketed as a seasonal song for anyone of any religion, as long as they are connected to the internet. Carols in the context of the 21st Century have advanced beyond the Pagans and the Church to reach people across all walks of life who listen not for religious reasons, but to keep up with the everchanging inclinations of society as a single unit.
Previously, The First Noel were notes on a score with words scribed into them that were an entire entity distanced away from its audience, but Pentatonix’s version has revamped the carol completely with the usage of audio-visual tools that involve cinematography in the form of a music video showing the five-member band singing at the consumer in stylised fashion attires, branding the experience as almost ‘being interpersonal with the singers’ to sell the song in way where the watcher feels as if the cover was made only for them, the marketing team going so far to involve fans in a competition designed to include audiences in a community where they are able to feel closer to their idols.  These methods have influenced how The First Noel is being received today as a Christmas Carol, as it is now promoted as a pop song with multiple marketing strategies to attract new listeners, even if in the eye of the hurricane, it is fundamentally a simple tune that has been refurbished and republished time and again.
Concluding Thoughts
Pagan carols were appropriated by the Roman Catholic church and now further appropriated by secular performance groups for a modern audience as part of entertainment. A traditional song with a religious subject is able to reach a modern-day audience through its presentation which appeals to aural and visual senses for communication. Alike a chameleon, the survivability of The First Noel has been dependant chiefly on its ability – or man’s ability – to change its form and colour to keep up with trends of different times and to cater to the demands of the public, or spending power, which used to be the Church, but now belongs to the common people.
Ultimately, it is an everlasting symbol of Christ as well as the impact of the religious affiliations by the early church, which is evident still in today’s version of The First Noel as it is still considered a celebratory seasonal piece released as covers during Christmas. Pentatonix has opened up the listening audience by blending 21st Century technology together with an old tune known by millions – a direction that will be able to bridge connections and form bonds between the old and the new.

#tenirjusqualaube #carolefives #bookstagram #roman #instabook #instalivre #fiction #maternite #feminisme https://www.instagram.com/p/Bnx9gVWHw5R/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=14ugql5286rx8

I hate like hell for it to be thought that I only watch TV and read the obits.  But...today there was an obit for Vic Damone that jarred loose a few thoughts.  I never looked forward to gigs with him because he was such a sourpuss.  Thinking of him this afternoon I recall one Catskill related  incident that will take some setting up.
On Labor Day weekends the incorrigible Boris Malina would hire the extra players (of which I was one) to do a two day engagement.  We stayed over in a dorm like building with few amenities. We did it for the money.  One such double bill featured Diahann Caroll and Vic Damone, who were then a couple (I liked her much better than I liked him).  Her show was on Saturday; his was on Sunday.
But this story (and I hope I am getting the important things right) involves, not me, but someone who turned down the job, a musician who had very recently come to New York from the West Coast.  Boris was always quick to pounce on any newcomers he heard about, call them, and tell them, in his distinctive baritone, that he would make them famous.
This story is told by the new guy.
After Boris explained the job he was told that, though greatly appreciating the call, “this was not the kind of work he came here to do.”  Boris said, “So take my job and wait one week to be a star.”

Another day another obit.  Marty Allen, of Rossi and Allen fame.  In the late Sixties this was one of the Catskill acts.  It was a time when partner acts were in, one suave, the other rough around the edges.  Sandler and Young was the first act I ever played (the Concord).  Of Rossi and Allen I remember very little except that Allen’s signature greeting was “hello dere” and it always got a laugh.  He always looked like he had just gotten up.  Of his lines I remember only: “I loaned my friend five hundred dollars for plastic surgery and now I can’t find him.”

St Valentine’s Day.  My sister’s sixty-fifth birthday.  Wow.  Tempus fugit.
I meet AB and Avis and we drive out to Wheatley.  A young man I’ve never met joins us in the percussion section.  Interesting story here...  He has a doctorate, teaches in a school on Long Island, plays with a percussion group and is not a member of the musicians union.  Fewer young musicians are going to the trouble to join the union because there is so little union work.  This means that can’t do the work, what’s left of it, paying union scale.  Today’s job pays a rate called “public service scale.”  The job could, if the contractor chose, consist of part time musicians.  There is talk of reforming an orchestra on Long Island but I have no idea if I’d be asked to participate.  It’s okay because old fogeyism is, after all, closing in, and I would find it terribly demeaning to have to ask to be included.
Note: Putting on my black gig attire.  My pants hang loosely on me after all that weight loss.  The bunched up waist concealed by a black vest.  Must update my wardrobe.
Note: I thought it a good idea to do some walking between the rehearsal and the performance.  AB and I walked a lot at the Roosevelt Field Mall.  But later, at home I experienced a great deal of foot pain and was up most of the night because of it.  One hopes for painless days ahead.
