Live stream (Week 12)

Live streaming has been a new addition to the digital media landscape and has rapidly transformed the media industry with its technological advances. It poses the question if this will be the future of watching live sport and if watching your favourite sports team on the TV is a thing of the past. While creating my very own live stream on a relatively new up and coming website called twitch, I learnt how to set it up on my phone and laptop as I was able to stream and see comments from viewers. Popular livestream content can be interviews, question and answer, behind the scenes footage, tutorials, demonstrations and webinars (AVPartners, 2021).

People have always been drawn to sports (Gill, 2018) and some events thrive of exclusivity and keeping events or games exclusive can drive ticket prices, selling tickets or attracting sponsors which can all help sporting organisations earn money and build exposure of their sport or club. Fans now more than ever can engage in new sports or watch their favourite sports and teams via digital streaming services and online subscriptions, making the global sports community more connected than ever using digital media to communicate with stakeholders and fans from all around the world (Duncan, 2020).

Using digital media types such as livestreaming is a way to be able to provide content for fans and subscribers though out the day at any time and provide fans access at any time with the sport content that they desperately crave (Barone, 2018).

Week 11 focused on livestreaming with our activity being the successful running of a livestream. We learned about the materials needed to stream on various different platforms. We also developed the skills needed to run a livestream, particularly on Instagram and YouTube. I ran a livestream on Instagram where I also gained experience answering questions and interacting with viewers live on a platform.

Livestreams are an asset to sporting organisations as they allow organisations to stream content to their audience right away. As Chung (2020) illustrate, the “distinguishing characteristic” of livestreams “is that there is no need to upload or download content” (p. 115) as it can be shared live. Livestreams can be used by sporting organisations to share press conferences, sporting events and other content focused on the organisation. Livestreaming can benefit sporting organisations as they can help them grow their audience, show data of their audience and provide a channel of communication for their audience (AVPartners, 2021).

Livestreams add to the fan experience of sport as they allow fans to consume content live. Fans are able to watch a livestream, such as a press conference a lot quicker than if it were posted later as a video. Livestreams also enhance the fan experience by allow them to communicate live with broadcasters by making requests, submitting questions and through liking the content (Wang, 2016, p. 485).

Technical Skills Learnt:

Live streaming is something I have previously watched but it was never something I had done before today. Live streaming allows you to be “engaging proposition when it provides exclusive content that allows the fan to experience authentic insights into the rituals and traditions” (Wymer, S 2021). I chose to live stream on Twitch as it was the easiest app to make an account and begin streaming. The technical skills I learnt were how to exactly use Twitch, when I watched live streaming I've only ever viewed it on Youtube so Twitch was a new experience for me. I also learnt how to actively engage with a live audience to try and maintain and increase my viewer base. In my live stream I instructed the viewer on how to use stairs in a safe manner.

Purpose: 

The purpose of live streaming is to provide insight to fans to a raw, uncut side they've never previously experienced. The purpose of live streaming events is to create the feel that the spectator is missing out by not being at the event, in order to try and attract the person to attend the live event in the future. Statistically spectators of live stream events are more likely to attend then viewers who watch the game in the future or not watch it at all. The purpose is also to engage with fans so they are kept up to date in real time with what's occurring.

Contributing To Fan Experience:

Live Streaming enhances fan experience as they get to experience the game in real time as if they would if they were at the game. “Live streaming has several advantages over traditional media”(Sripanidkulchai, K Maggs, B Zhang, H 2014).The footage is raw, uncut and unedited making it one of the most authentic forms of media. It gives fans behind the scenes footage to scenes they may have previously not experienced.

A livestream is a modern and new way of communicating with people through the media universe. It is a great way for people to communicate online, as a livestream creates a realistic environment which stimulates engagement, due to the uncertainty of outcome. The live comments allow a two-way communication which makes you feel you are a part of a community. It is a current way of communication, as it is free to watch and easily accessible. this stimulates interest as it is a real-life situation. Livestreaming is not only unique but increasing in interest continuously. Gomes (2018) reinforces this notion as Online streaming is one of the fastest growing industries. In fact, the video streaming market is worth more than 30 billion dollars. It’s expected to be worth more than 70 billion dollars by 2021. What also makes livestreaming so unique and appealing is the ability to maximise its exposure all over the internet. AVPartners (2021) agrees with the notion as live videos tend to attract more online engagement compared with other types of content. They incite a sense of urgency, compelling people to watch.
