So NFTgate has now hit tumblr - I made a thread about it on my twitter, but I'll talk a bit more about it here as well in slightly more detail. It'll be a long one, sorry! Using my degree for something here. This is not intended to sway you in one way or the other - merely to inform so you can make your own decision and so that you aware of this because it will happen again, with many other artists you know.

Let's start at the basics: NFT stands for 'non fungible token', which you should read as 'passcode you can't replicate'. These codes are stored in blocks in what is essentially a huge ledger of records, all chained together - a blockchain. Blockchain is encoded in such a way that you can't edit one block without editing the whole chain, meaning that when the data is validated it comes back 'negative' if it has been tampered with. This makes it a really, really safe method of storing data, and managing access to said data. For example, verifying that a bank account belongs to the person that says that is their bank account.

For most people, the association with NFT's is bitcoin and Bored Ape, and that's honestly fair. The way that used to work - and why it was such a scam - is that you essentially purchased a receipt that said you owned digital space - not the digital space itself. That receipt was the NFT. So, in reality, you did not own any goods, that receipt had no legal grounds, and its value was completely made up and not based on anything. On top of that, these NFTs were purchased almost exclusively with cryptocurrency which at the time used a verifiation method called proof of work, which is terrible for the environment because it requires insane amounts of electricity and computing power to verify. The carbon footprint for NFTs and coins at this time was absolutely insane.

In short, Bored Apes were just a huge tech fad with the intention to make a huge profit regardless of the cost, which resulted in the large market crash late last year. NFTs in this form are without value.

However, NFTs are just tech by itself more than they are some company that uses them. NFTs do have real-life, useful applications, particularly in data storage and verification. Research is being done to see if we can use blockchain to safely store patient data, or use it for bank wire transfers of extremely large amounts. That's cool stuff!

So what exactly is Käärijä doing? Kä is not selling NFTs in the traditional way you might have become familiar with. In this use-case, the NFT is in essence a software key that gives you access to a digital space. For the raffle, the NFT was basically your ticket number. This is a very secure way of doing so, assuring individuality, but also that no one can replicate that code and win through a false method. You are paying for a legimate product - the NFT is your access to that product.

What about the environmental impact in this case? We've thankfully made leaps and bounds in advancing the tech to reduce the carbon footprint as well as general mitigations to avoid expanding it over time. One big thing is shifting from proof of work verification to proof of space or proof of stake verifications, both of which require much less power in order to work. It seems that Kollekt is partnered with Polygon, a company that offers blockchain technology with the intention to become climate positive as soon as possible. Numbers on their site are very promising, they appear to be using proof of stake verification, and all-around appear more interested in the tech than the profits it could offer.

But most importantly: Kollekt does not allow for purchases made with cryptocurrency, and that is the real pisser from an environmental perspective. Cryptocurrency purchases require the most active verification across systems in order to go through - this is what bitcoin mining is, essentially. The fact that this website does not use it means good things in terms of carbon footprint.

But why not use something like Patreon? I can't tell you. My guess is that Patreon is a monthly recurring service and they wanted something one-time. Kollekt is based in Helsinki, and word is that Mikke (who is running this) is friends with folks on the team. These are all contributing factors, I would assume, but that's entirely an assumption and you can't take for fact.

Is this a good thing/bad thing? That I also can't tell you - you have to decide that for yourself. It's not a scam, it's not crypto, just a service that sits on the blockchain. But it does have higher carbon output than a lot of other services do, and its exact nature is not publicly disclosed. This isn't intended to sway you to say one or the other, but merely to give you the proper understanding of what NFTs are as a whole and what they are in this particular case so you can make that decision for yourself.

Apologies for making a bunch of posts about this recently but I think it's important for people to know (and for other people on Tumblr who stream) To give you an idea of how silly Twitch's stance on external vs 'direct' views are - it's nearly impossible to not have more views when posting a link to my stream externally. Whenever I go on Twitch, the front page carousel is dedicated to 3 or 4 huge streamers that play the same game every day. The recommended for you section is only meaningful if you have an account and this makes discoverability is a nightmare. I'm absolutely not blaming anyone who clicks on my streams via Tumblr - it's just utterly shite that Twitch see viewers who click through from external sources as being lesser than someone who searches and clicks on me from Twitch's homepage. That's the excuse they're giving to not grant me Partner status even though I fulfilled all of the requirements. I needed to achieve all of these requirements within a 30 day period and I have busted my gut to make them.

Partner would both help me improve my stream for my viewers with more emotes, priority on Twitch's video encoding, longer storage of my VODs etc as well as help financially when aiming to get sponsored.

If that 'Direct / Other' percentage doesn't go up that'll keep me locked out of Partner forever. It's just really disappointing, and it forces me to beg people to search for me on Twitch, follow me on Twitch, click the notifications on their phone Twitch apps when I go live. It's so incredibly short-sighted when Twitch is definitely claiming those viewer numbers to market themselves for advertisers.

I got a Barbie Typewriter!

After a couple years of searching, I finally managed to get my hands on a Barbie toy electric typewriter! 

For the unfamiliar, a neat aspect of Barbie typewriters is that some models have built-in cipher encoding and decoding modes, which, due to some quirks in how the typewriters were developed and marketed, were not advertised as features, so the cipher functionality was basically secret!

These days, the old school Barbie typewriters are relatively rare and usually pretty expensive, although the one I got was actually fairly cheap, due to being in somewhat rough condition. It unfortunately had quite a bit of battery corrosion, so it was untested and sold to be a “display piece”:

It even came with the original box (although it is certainly a little worse for wear lol)

The battery compartment was absolutely filled with corrosion residue, and traces of it had spread across the whole typewriter—it was everywhere!

I’m no expert in electronics, but I know that the presence of battery corrosion doesn’t necessarily mean that a gadget is broken beyond all repair, so I decided to try to see if a thorough cleaning could possibly get it working again.

So, I cleaned up the battery compartment with vinegar, took the whole back of the case off and wiped out the inside of it (which was coated in a thin layer of corrosion dust), and finally popped in some new C batteries. Then came the moment of truth, flipping the power switch!

And…nothing. Darn. 😔

Ah, well, it’s still a very cool display piece, and I’m happy to have it!

hi. robotics question: i want an electric motor that receives input to control its force, and outputs its position. im kinda confused with different kinds of motors. controlling force is easy, right?

in terms of scale, im talking about an arduino prototype so pretty small but im fine if the motor is big enough to have its own power cable.

but! based on some research, it sounds like torque control in a DC motor can be achieved by limiting the current to the motor (versus speed control, by setting voltage).[1][2] look for brushed DC motors with built-in encoders, that's the part that will tell you the motor's position. encoders can be absolute (tells you where the rotor is wrt some fixed "zero" position, consistent across power cycles) or relative/incremental (just tells you how far you've gone since you started/that you've taken a step). i'm not sure what kind of circuitry you might need to handle the current control, although looking for something marketed for arduino makes sense as a first step.[3]

there are also AC motors, brushless DC (BLDC) motors, and stepper motors, and they all have more complex control schemes that I know next to nothing about!

EDIT: god damn this got longer than I expected

Listening: I almost exclusively listened to Against Me! during this trip for some reason. On Saturday night my metro got interrupted and I got kicked out a few kilometers from my hotel, and after watching a couple full busses skip my stop, I just walked back. I put on Black Crosses for the first time, which is a combination of demos and acoustic versions of the songs from White Crosses which is probably one of my favourite punk albums.

I can't listen to some of Against Me! without having a good bad time because of Memories but I do not have that issue with White Crosses. As far as the demo/acoustic versions go, they are much lighter than the mainline releases which is bad if you want something energetic but good if you kind of want to soak in the lyrics.

There's a lot of great ones on Black Crosses including the obvious ones like Spanish Moss and The Western World but the one that really got me while walking back was the acoustic version of Because of the Shame which is positively heartbreaking when given space like this.

Reading: I fell down a rabbit hole on delta-sigma conversion while doing simultaneous reading up on 32-bit float audio and what the hell DSD is. I will reverse explanations.

Delta-Sigma is a collection of techniques used, roughly, to convert between high-sample-rate, low-bit-depth data and low-sample-rate, high-bit-depth data. A delta-sigma audio analogue-digital converter might sample a low-pass-filtered version of incoming signal at 6MHz and 1-2 bits and use that to reconstruct a 16-bit 44kHz version of the signal. Thanks to nyquist and other various equivalences this works with basically zero quantization error if you chose your filters right.

I was familiar with this from class-D amplifiers, which are effectively delta-sigma digital-analogue conversion, which reproduces a low-frequency analogue signal by feeding a pulse-density encoded chain into an amplifier and a low pass filter.

Anyway, DSD is a silly audiophile brand name for an audio codec that stores the 1-bit pulse encoded form of an audio signal rather than storing traditional PCM audio. Fundamentally if your hardware is correct there's basically no difference in information content or density between them.

This led me to these two good articles on dithering and delta-sigma architecture, among others.

Watching: I stumbled across this ongoing good series on YouTube a few weeks ago discussing trends in marketing movies as being "no CGI" when they are absolutely the fuck not. The second part just came out, but here's part 1:

"No CGI" is always a ridiculous claim in basically any modern movie, but this is a really good breakdown of how a combination of irresponsible journalism and intentionally poor communication creates the impression that tons of incredibly effects heavy movies are actually "free of CGI".

Treating computer graphics and effects as some kind of scourge is a misled reflex. It reminds me a lot of backlash against pitch correction, because in most cases people do not realize how much pitch correction is used in basically all music you hear. Big artists playing live performances are even pitch corrected in real time these days.

It's just part of the business, and in a very parallel way, people expect the output of CGI/pitch correction even if they don't know that. If P!nk were to go out on stage and sing her music without pitch correction you'd hear the effects of her ridiculously energetic acts, and people would bitch about it because as evidenced by people who describe good sounding music systems as feeling "like live music", people don't know what live music sounds like! Live music sounds like crap compared to studio production, you're there to inhale six different kinds of cigarette and get hit in the chest by a drunk girl who isn't paying attention to where she's going.

Wow I have a lot of opinions about how people don't realize how much production is in things. This should probably be a post. Later. Hey this is like guys who talk about "no makeup" look-*I AM YANKED OFFSTAGE WITH A COMICALLY OVERSIZED SHEPHERD'S CROOK*.

Tools and Equipment: Sometimes you will find that your phone is dead and you need to find your way back to your hotel in a bizzarely convoluted part of La Défense late at night. And at this time you will be grateful that you took the time to orient yourself relative to local streets and the river and the metro station so that you do not have to find a corner to charge your phone and can instead just get back to your hotel. They were widely considered to be one of the best in the business—in any business—at deciphering encoded messages from supervillains. It was a weird form of job security for a reporter, but in a world of superheros and supervillains, you take what you can get.

This message, however, was from the Overlord, the longest-standing and most mystery-shrouded supervillain in the city. It was by far the longest decoding task of the reporter's career... and the strangest format. (AO3 link here.)

“EVIL WILL RISE. WE ARE LEGION. ALL HAIL THE OVERLORD WHO SHALL REIGN OVER THIS LAND. PROSPERITY AND PLENTY ARE THE PRIZE OF THOSE WHO JOIN OUR CAU.”

The reporter sat back from their whiteboard and sipped their tea.

They were widely considered to be one of the best in the business—in any business—at deciphering encoded messages from supervillains. It was a weird form of job security. The newspaper loved it, of course, because it ensured them the scoop on whatever the latest supervillain was up to. They had initially worried about getting on supervillains' radar, but, ultimately, the villains wanted their messages to be deciphered—otherwise there was no reason to encode a coherent message. In fact, the reporter was fairly certain some of the paper's anonymous tip-offs came directly from the villains themselves.

Hero organizations and law enforcement were probably the worst part of the deal. They needed the help, but they wanted the decoded messages kept under wraps and especially didn't want it advertised that the newspaper managed to decipher the clues before the police. The paper and the cops had come to a detente of sorts years ago: the paper continued to publish whatever deciphered messages they saw fit, and the closest hero league got a courtesy heads-up with the deciphered message before it hit the front page. The paper didn't call attention to the fact that the superheroes and the cops couldn't figure it out without help… unless the other side started trash-talking first. (They seemed to have learned after the first few times.)

This message had been by far the longest decoding job of the reporter's career.

“The Evil Overlord” had been taunting their foes for years that their manifesto was openly published and that no one had managed to find and decipher it yet. Every word and image they released had been pored over by investigators, journalists, scholars, and hobbyists in search of hidden meaning. There was plenty of fodder for the search. Overlord had their fingers in pies all over the area.

Hell, there was an entire collection of local businesses in the region that everyone knew to be a front for Overlord. Owners Erik, Victoria, Isobel, and Lyle, the self-proclaimed children of their ever-masked villainous parent, made no secret of their allegiance. Out-of-towners were generally baffled that no one had shut down a known supervillain-owned business front, even if no one had been dig up admissible evidence of legal wrongdoing on the part of the business itself. Locals mostly shrugged—law enforcement and the superhero league together had failed to touch Overlord and their organization for decades; what else was new? Legally the businesses were squeaky clean, the prices were pretty good, and their staff was well-paid and well-treated, with competitive benefits. If your city was stuck with a resident supervillain, might as well reap what fringe benefits you could, right?

Their advertising, signage, and even coupon fine print had been scrutinized for hidden messages almost as much as Overlord's overt proclamations of doom, with absolutely no luck in finding the fabled “manifesto.” They did occasionally conceal a marketing easter egg, e.g., a passphrase or set of instructions to collect a free “Evil, Inc.” coffee mug. (The reporter had the entire collection: Nine were displayed on the shelf above their desk; the latest one, a rainbow-themed June design with each full-height letter of “EVIL, INC” in a different color, contained their current cup of tea.)

They were all looking in the wrong place.

To be fair, it had taken the reporter a long time to figure it out themselves, even with their experience.

It was common knowledge, of course, that Overlord's own children's names spelled out “EVIL.” They frequently highlighted it themselves—it was, after all, the official explanation for why they called their businesses “Evil, Inc.” And on the face of it, that was a simple, self-contained joke—the Overlord had only four children.

…Right?

The reporter no longer recalled exactly what had drawn their attention to the employee birth announcements in the first place, but they did remember the names they'd noticed in that first batch: Hadley, Arwen, Ivy, and Liam. HAIL.

It was a minor thing, easily explained by sheer coincidence, or by the newsletter author having some fun with acronyms once they saw the collection of names. They probably wouldn't even have registered it if it hadn't been an announcement from the local acronym-of-sibling-initials company. And at the time, no one else was really looking—those births long pre-dated Overlord's earliest claims of having published an undiscovered “manifesto.” But the reporter hadn't become a supervillain decryption expert by not chasing patterns down just for curiosity's sake.

Finding the earlier parts of the message wasn't trivial. Access to back issues of the employee newsletter wasn't exactly front and center in the company's public-facing communications; the early formatting and wording of the announcements had varied, and, in perhaps the biggest hurdle to deciphering the message, not every employee's baby was part of the pattern.

Still, once you tracked down all the announcements and figured out the indicators that flagged which ones were part of the message, it was a simple a matter of listing the names in the order announced (not always corresponding to birth order) and adding some spaces and punctuation.

Walker, Ian, Lucy and Lily (twins). Regina, Ibrahim, Sara, Eli. William and Earl. Ana, Robert, Evie. Lori, Edward (Jr.), Gabriela, Imani and Omari (twins again), Nathan. Allison, Laci, Laetitia.

The reporter had been quietly keeping track ever since, watching the message slowly, slowlyunfold. It was about at the point the message hit “who shall reign” that they started to suspect Overlord had never intended this to become a thing and just wasn't sure how to end the “tradition” without insulting the next employee who wanted to include their baby. (“Prize” had been a particularly amusing section to observe—whoever organized this effort had clearly gone to some contortions in terms of message planning and announcement order to make little Zachary the 3rd, aka “Tripp,” fit into the message.)

The phone on their desk chimed a gentle reminder—one hour until Jason's Little League game. The Evil, Inc.-sponsored team, the Minions of Darkness (also home to four of the letters in “Prosperity”: Peter, Ollie, Ignacio “Nacho,” and Tyler) had been having a blast this season, and Jason had been bouncing off the walls all week about their upcoming game against the Metropolis Lions.

Lyle, who ran the Evil grocery store closest to the baseball field, always supplied snacks for the team, and the reporter had promised to swing by and pick them up on the way. (They wondered, as they had many times before, whether they should ask if his parent wanted their “manifesto” to be revealed or to remain a mystery to those who didn't find it for themselves.)

They sorted the latest Evil, Inc., birth announcement (Angela and Uri) into the folder with the rest, scrubbed all traces of the message off of the whiteboard, and flipped off the lights on the way out of their office.

Hopefully Lyle included some of Evil's store-brand alphabet cookies this week. They tended to forestall the away team's commentary about the terrors of living in a city with an active supervillain, and besides, all the kids loved them!
