The coming months may be some of the most important in our students' academic life. This video from Horizons National explains why summer is a make or break season for kids in our neighborhood. 

The challenge is bleak but there are also clear reasons for hope. We can make a difference by providing much-needed interventions at the most important time. Last year, every student in Urban Ventures summer program made measurable academic gains!

Is that really the first thing they're going to say to you?

"It is, considering how the last time I saw you, you were already running a low fever."

You didn't even realize you were speaking out loud. They sigh and set the plastic bag they were holding down on your bedside table. Sitting down on your mattress, they fix a stern gaze on you. "I thought we agreed that you wouldn't shoulder things on your own anymore."

You look away to avoid their judgement. You feel your cheeks heat up even more on top of the fever. "I didn't think I'd get this sick. And I've been through worse." You can't help the pout that forms on your lips. Maybe being sick has left you with no filter to hide your true thoughts.

Their eyes soften but there's still a hint of sadness in it. "Imagine my shock when I got a text from O saying you almost passed out during a shoot," They reach out and place the back of their hand on your forehead. You lean into the cool touch instinctively. "And you're still burning up. You have to know when to take a step back. If not for yourself, then for me."

"For you?" You whisper softly.

Their heart clenches at the sight. If it's your watery eyes or the way your voice wavers with emotion, they don't know. They pull back their hand and you whine a little at the loss. "Yes, for me. After all, we're both pretty shit at taking care of ourselves for our own sake. Might as well do it to keep each other from worrying too much."

You don't reply right away. You take a deep breath, but it comes out a little watery and a little strained. You'll blame the fever for it. "Okay. I'll try to do better next time."

For the first time since they've arrived in your apartment, they smile. "That's all I ask for," They reach for the plastic bag and pull out a few things. A bottle of lemon tea, cooling patches, and cold medicine from what you've managed to see. "Is there anything you want me to get you?"

You think for a moment, trying to push through your fuzzy mind. Eventually you reach out for their hand. "Stay with me? Until I fall asleep again."

They smile again, leaning forward to kiss your warm cheek. "Of course. I'm not going anywhere, I'll be here even when you wake up."

You close your eyes and fall back on your bed, sighing with contentment. There's still so much the two of you need to work on in your budding relationship but each day is always a small step forward.

And that alone is enough.

Alarming Decline: National Scores Drop for Middle School Students

A troubling trend has emerged as the latest assessment results show a concerning decline in student test scores across the nation. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report for the previous year highlights a significant drop in average scores for reading and mathematics.

The NAEP report reveals that the average scores for 13-year-old students dropped by 4 points in reading and a substantial 9 points in mathematics compared to the previous assessment. What is especially concerning is that students who were already struggling in their studies saw even greater decreases in their scores. In other words, students who were already behind their peers fell even further behind.

Another disheartening finding is that fewer students are finding joy in reading. Reading for pleasure is not only important for academic success but also for personal growth. Declines in reading for fun can have lasting effects on their overall literacy skills and enjoyment of learning.

The decline in scores was not equal for all students. Those in under-resourced communities faced more significant challenges, with a more noticeable decline in their scores compared to students in wealthier areas. For the first time since Urban Ventures was founded, the achievement gap is widening. This inequality highlights the urgency of providing targeted assistance and ensuring fair access to resources for all students, regardless of their background.

This report further emphasizes the necessity for targeted support to help students catch up and succeed. Thankfully, with the right interventions, students have the potential to reverse the downward trend and make remarkable progress. For instance, students enrolled in Urban Ventures' Reading Plus program tend to progress at twice the speed of their peers.

Likewise, through Summer Ventures, students dedicate their mornings to developing their reading, writing, and math skills. By continuing their studies during the summer, students can avoid the detrimental "Summer Slide" and start the next school year ahead instead of lagging behind.

While the national trends are troubling, they also underscore the dire need for the services provided by Urban Ventures. These services are only made possible with your support.
