Still Life 1

I am at a cafe that I first started coming to in the late 90’s. Over half of my life ago. Dana Street Roasting Company in Mountain View, California. It has been decades since I could call myself a regular. I don’t know who anyone here is except for Nick, the owner, and no one here knows who I am - not even Nick, though maybe he once did, a little bit. When I started coming here, when I actually was a regular, the place was called Jumpin Java. Nick still owned it then, the name change came about when he bought a roaster and started selling beans. In the old days, everyone who worked here was a punk who had moved from Austin Texas or somewhere close by, the was a group of five or six of them. The main figure among them was a guy named Aaron who managed the place. He wore tattoos from Wilson’s Illuminatus! Trilogy, constantly played loud industrial music in the cafe, and led the Texas punks. If you were sitting outside and he came out and hung with you for five minutes while taking a smoke break it felt like a great privelege, like being chosen for something. Like most people I knew in Mountain View, he has long since left, first for Arizona, and now I believe he lives in Washington. It was a lively place, for a small boring town like Mountain View, often hard to get a seat unless you knew someone who’s table you could join, and there was a little stage with live jazz and folk bands playing from Thursdays to Sundays, three tables outside for smokers, and also a whole alley where people hung out. There were two other main cafes in Mountain View in those days - Red Rocks and Cuppa Joe’s - which also had decent crowds and live music on the weekends. Also two corporate cafes further up Castro Street, a Starbucks and a Peet’s, but I’m not counting those. Also a branch of a local bagel chain, a fake French bakery, two good pho places, a ramen place, several Indian restaurants with good lunch buffet deals - one of which, Sue’s, also featured a gallery of art by the owner. Also several good dim sum places, a handful of American style Chinese food places, a couple of bars I was too young to have much interest in, a large Chinese grocery store, an excellent taqueria called Los Charros (for the food, but also there was a bartender working there with a famous mustache), a hippy ice cream shop, a small Hong Kong style bakery with great pork rolls, and a number of acupuncture and herbal medecine shops. If you were to sit at a table outside the cafe and look towards Castro street, you’d see an herb shop, an attorney’s office, a small real estate office, and then on the corner there’s Easy Food Company, a Chinese convenience store that sold a wide range of imported goods from snack foods to liqueurs to statues, where I used to buy Parliament Lights for $2.50 a pack.

This town has been through many drastic changes. The above description applies to when I was in my late teens and early twenties. When I came to the downtown area as a young child, it was different, like it came from a different era. Appliance stores that looked like they were from the 50’s, wooden boardwalks on the sidewalks, a weird fake “old west” vibe. But I didn’t spend much time here as a child so I don’t know much more about it beyond that superficial impression.

Now it is over two decades later since the time I describe in the first paragraph. The three tables are still here outside the cafe, and I’m sitting at one of them. But the inside is a jumble of upside down chairs, plastic milk crates, burlap sacks of coffee beans and burlap sacks of burlap sacks. There is nowhere to sit, no music playing, no schedule of upcoming live bands, and nowhere for any bands to play or set up anyway. But the outside part of the cafe is unchanged, and when I look towards Castro street I see the herb shop, the attorney’s office, the real estate place, and Easy Food Company, which still sells a wide range of imported Chinese goods from snack foods to liqueurs to statues and they probably still sell Parliament Lights too, though I’ve long since quit and I doubt they are $2.50 a pack.

Beyond Easy Food, Castro Street itself, is where the most drastic change has occurred. The most obvious change of course is due to the pandemic. Once busy with cars, the street has been blocked off up at California Ave all the way down to the train station, which means about five blocks of it are pedestrian only, and the restaurants and cafes have spilled out into the street. This happened back in 2020, and a number of neighborhing towns did the same. Some of those, like Palo Alto, have reversed course and opened their downtown areas back up to traffic. But in Mountain View this seems to be a more permanent situation, and personally I think it’s a drastic improvement. On evenings and weekends Castro street fills up with families eating at the many restaurants that now have tables in the middle of the street and there are musicians performing on street corners. But if you come here on a weekday morning there are few people around and the lack of cars provides a peaceful atmosphere.

The other massive change is due to the growth of the tech industry, but this is a change that has occurred in waves, again and again, over the course of my life. The phrase “Silicon Valley” is often used in the media and discourse as a shorthand term for the computer/internet/technology business regardless of location, but also Silicon Valley is a physical place, it’s the Santa Clara Valley, and Mountain View is very much in the heart of it. The growth of this industry brings influxes of people - people from all over, but mainly from other parts of the US, from China, and from India and other South Asian countries. My own family came from Massachusetts in the early 80’s. This was of course several decades before Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. came into being. The main tech companies in those days were Sun, Hewlett-Packard, Apple still a fledgling but very quickly growing. In those days it felt more concentrated down in San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, towns where you’d see these huge corporate “office parks”. By the time I left for college there was another “tech boom” with a different suite of companies, this time around the internet. The age of Yahoo, Hotmail, Geocities, the personal web page, the AltaVista search. I wasn’t in the Bay Area at the time, and what I heard was that it changed a lot and then changed back. It was a bubble that burst. But it was to be one of several. There was another, later growth of the industry around a new set of internet companies - the ones we are dealing with now. Google in particular probably had more of an effect on Mountain View than most, when they set up a massive campus here. Now as I write this, any random person I see on the street in this town or a neighboring town has a good chance of either being an employee of one of those massive tech companies, or of being someone who was recently laid off by one of them.

In terms of this town, and my place in it, the change is both bad and good. The inequality gap has grown wider, and personally there is no way I could afford to live here now, unless my fortunes were to drastically change. I only come to this area a few times a year, when visiting my wife’s family, who are the only people I still know in this part of the Bay. All of the wonderful types of food that I describe in the first paragraph are here, and more, if not the exact same places. Los Charros is now called La Espuala, but the menu is the same, even if the guy with the mustache no longer works there. There are many good Indian restaurants, though they no longer offer cheap lunch buffets. Red Rocks, one of the other independent cafes, is also still around and even has an open mic night once a week, and more places to sit than Dana Street - but their coffee just isn’t as good. Some of the places are the same - one of the pho places that I used to go to on lunch breaks when I was a telemarketer is still here, and still looks the same. A lot of the other places are essentially just more expensive or “prestige branded” versions of the places that were here before, and there are a lot more of them, and even if I can’t afford to live here I can at least, sometimes, afford eating here, and in fact after I finish writing here I’m going to go to the Hong Kong bakery to get a pork roll.

During the time while I was writing this, someone came and joined me at the table to do some work on a laptop. After some time they mentioned that they “used to come here a long time ago” and I thought it was so odd that I was writing about the exact same subject, and wondered if this was someone I used to know. But further conversation revealed that by “a long time ago” they meant 2012, while I was thinking of the previous century.

If you’ve read all this, for whatever reason: this isn’t a story or a polemic. There’s no point to it. Just writing for the sake of writing, background without a foreground.

I'm going to try and journal on here more often!! It will be filled with my thoughts and ruminations on things, irl stuff, energy work musings and techniques, and spirit work and astral stories. You can read them and more in the #journal tag.

Anywho, read below the cut for: TL;DR observations from acupuncture today, finding out my school might be closing, and guided vs dragged and a reminder to myself to be intentional

I've had the flu (or at least I'm pretty sure what that is) this week, and today is the best I've felt all week. Still was having a slight fever and some cough/congestion, so I went in for acupuncture at my school. Some fun tidbits from my session today:

-TCM diagnosis is an External Heat Invasion, which is what I totally guessed it was! I'm learning (:

-When I had ST36 needled, on both sides my entire stomach/abdomen immediately warmed and lit up, which is a new sensation. Fun fact: ST36 is called "The Ruler of the Abdomen"

-Had my GB20 needled, which felt amazinggg but ouchy it was very tender after. I am interested in doing a Cranial Sacral Technique and some Reiki on this point, and will update more when I do this

-LR3 hurt like a b, which it normally doesn't for me (this is a very commonly used point), and my intern said it was cuz of the heat, which would make sense. (Also everyone at my school calls points that are painful "spicy" which made me laugh cuz the pun of spicy and heat. Anywaysss)

-There's three points on the forearm that when used together are called "Buddha's Triangle." Had it done today for the first time and it was super relaxing actually

Don't really have much more interesting stuff to report from that, aside from what I normally feel. It's always so wild to me to feel the energy pathways connecting to each other when needles are placed in them, like circuits connecting.

Speaking of acupuncture, now for some irl stuff. We all learned some grave news yesterday - there is a good chance that my school will be closing later this year.

Since the pandemic, the enrollment at my school has been incredibly low. My cohort and the year above me only have about 20 people - my school used to average 40-60 people per year.

Because tuition is my schools biggest source of income, these lower numbers puts them in hot water. Don't need to go into incredible detail, but that plus rising costs and the fact that the area the school is in is super rough, which makes it difficult to sell - things are not looking good.

Our president said that it's not guaranteed that the school will close, just a last-ditch option. But my intuition is saying that it will close.

I've had a lot of thoughts and emotions about this. I mean... coming to this school and studying TCM has been a goal of mine for like. 7 years. It's the whole reason I moved up here in the first place.

Naturally, I was upset and panicked to learn this. But after digging into it, it's because I had tied part of my identity to this. Like in the way that people associate "what you do" as a part of you - I had associated going to this school and studying TCM as a big part of my identity and who I am as a person. And when that was threatened to not be a thing anymore, my ego got scared. Who am I if I don't do that? What will I do?

But it reminded me that I am much more than what I do. And something else that I've been realizing and remembering the past couple weeks - the reason I came to this school was to learn about Energy, and Qi.

At the end of the day, that's what I care about. It doesn't necessarily have to be with TCM - acupuncture was just my jumping off point, as it was the first way I experienced Energy in that way, in a way that was also structured.

And so, if this is the Universe redirecting me elsewhere, I'm still having some emotions about it all, but I will do my best to welcome and roll with the change.

That being said, I'm not necessarily being totally hung out to dry. It's not official and there is no information about it yet, but if the school does close, I think they legally have to offer a "teach out" option, which basically means that another school would adopt us and help us finish our degree. So. We'll see what happens.

One other thing that I realized today, is: "In order to be guided, you have to be moving in the first place." You can't expect to be guided or helped without putting in any work or energy or intention yourself. That's not being guided or helped - that's being dragged. And while the Universe does do that sometimes, it rarely does.

So a reminder to myself - stop sitting and start walking, take initiative, be intentional, and stop waiting for confirmation before action, and instead act and let the Universe provide input and correction if necessary.

So, it's eh- complicated.

Trust me, shit's not on fire, but I have more contact to Luddick than I ever wanted, I found the Strahov and I know how to get there. I'm still not sold on blackmailing the reporter since he got caught in this...unfortunate mess on accident, but I have no choice. And I will surely not get back to Paris without solving this mystery. I am locked in my hotel room and shoved the cupboard in front of the door and shut the blinds. Hello paranoia!

Transcript of the first and second page: I contacted Luddick and it went as expected, he's furious over my threat and I really did not intend to upset him this way. But do I have a choice? He said he would call me, I will wait until he does so. He did, and fed me information that can be considered secret shit again.

What I gathered in the call: - Vasiley had ties to the Madia and owned something they wanted. They "set the Montrum on him" - The corpse was not to be found since said mafia cleaned all uo and the evidence is mostly gone - (in the middle of his gibberish I suggested to myself to look for the woman who talked to him for infromation) - He knows who Bouchard is, mot much detail, and is oblivious to his death - aaand I should never call him again and the Strahov won't let me in anyway.

What I gathered is not much, but it raises -of course- even more questions. New information is that if the Monstrum was set on Vasiley it was an assassination, and I think I know now the Monstrum is related to Eckhardt for sure, and the woman he talked to has to be Lara Croft, who he probably got into the Strahov. New questions that have risen are how to get into the Strahov without raising suspicion and if the mafia-plot is a cover up for The Agency or are they the same or related? That would tie all to Eckhardt. There's supposedly a Sanitarium in or close to the Strahov, is that my way in? And, Boaz might have had her own place to work at, but did her coworker Grant Muller, too? Is there a botanical research facility?

Hahaha, you won't beleive it, even if I teleported you to see for yourself. The oldest Sanitarium in Prague is located UNDER the STRAHOV. I don't think that's a coincidence. So there's of course not much to fing on the whole building, who operated it or what the institution behind it was; all I got is this:

it's not even 23 years old, yet was abandoned and it not used anymore

it was built by an unknown party, yet financed by the Argentinian government (Boaz!)

it used to be a place to stay, including a cafeteria, rooms for entertainment, a medical facility and a research area

there were not only Czech people there

it has 8 floors, all being cellars and the eighth is the lowest, where the people lived

there's even a pool for swimming classes

and after an incident it was shut down and never oficially used again.

So it's...a lost place, right?

There used to be several parts of the institute that were used accordingly. The overview is as follows:

Dining Room; used as a cafeteria. All patients were to gather and eat together. The food was usually something easy to process and handed by the staff. The tables were for groups only, so no one would be left out. Laboratory; Filled with a lot of paperwork and shelves with information. The patients which required therapy in person were talked to and the notes were analyzed for better treatment. The files were printed (back then that was cool) and categorized. Also, the individual prescription of any of each person was noted among the process of their recovery. Testing Room; A room to evaluate a patient's condition and character. There was a lie detector to not allow contradictory information on the patient's condition, as a huge amount of information on their health is gathered as today via person-to-person evalation. Acupuncture Room; A place to relax and get some Chinese acupuncture. In a lot of medical conditions it is known to bring relief without actual pharmaceutical drugs. The patient would lie on a bed or semi-bed and relax, then one would select the place according to the pain on the body and get punctured by needles. Sometimes the relief came immediately, sometimes one had to redo the treatment every so often. Acupuncture is known to be relatively gentle to the body and psyche. Morgue; When people lived int he Sanitarium and died due to age, rarely due to illness, they were kept int he morgue after death. It's basically a lot of fridges on the wall where bodies are kept fresh until a pathologist would check on the cause of death. Later an undertaler would be called to pick up the dead and contact the family to schedule the burial.

So far, so normal. Not sure if all of the 8 floors contain the same rooms or if they have more specializted floors that have all of the basic rooms. There used to be a visitor's entry which is now closed, you can only enter if you pass the Strahov. Great. I have to find another way...what if there os another way in? I need to check if Muller has his own facility, liek Boaz apparently did. They surely wouldn't use the same place. Could this have been hers?

I have tried to get in touch with Luddick again, but he doesn't answer. He has yet to update his socials and there is no new article or post by him. It's been a day and a talkative guy like him would not just disappear. He'd love to yell at me at the phone. Where the hell is he? I have aquired an ID for the medical center (which is being sold at the black market for urban exlorers) which should open me ways in, shouldn't it? I sketched a map of the center and my plan to get in, in case the doors are still to be used. If not, I might have to use force, or...something.

My path so far: I'll try to get in and update my way.

UPDATE 1: I just had to cross some loosely made barricades. The doors to the reception room were open. UPDATE 2: My security card worked! It's such a silly thing to say, but it opened. I'm pretty sure this is part of the urban exploring. I'm heading downstairs and there's dust and spiders everywhere. They surely made this look cool. UPDATE 3: I could use the lift, and I prayed to five different deities since this place is running on stolen electricity from somwhere. There was a door labled "The Biodome", I'm still contemplating whether or not to use the lift further down. I stopped since it started making weird noises. UPDATE 4: The electricity is down! I have no idea if that was my mistake. Thank god I haven't t puched the lift again, but I also cannot go back now. I mean...this place is being explored usually, so someone will find me, even if I cannot use the lift now. But maybe the Biodome is the place I'm looking for?

I can hear nothing specifically, it feels like the room after the door is enormously large. Sometimes I think leaves are rustling? I'm contemplating moving further in, or starting to panic and scream my lungs out. But if the Strahov is near I might as well be shot on sight.

Yeah, I'm eating a cereal bar and considering my options. I wish I had someone to talk to. It's getting lonely here.

Stone!Figure x God!Seek post reconciliation headcanons.

Figure’s the little spoon, it acts all tough due to pain but the moment its touched it melts.

And Seek hasn’t slept next to it, or even been intimate with someone in decades.

Seek just holds It because one of the worst and hardest things for stony to do is sleep because the pain gets worse at night.

Hearing Figure cry out in pain is very, very hard for Seek.

Two frequently go on dates, mostly just wandering around the city and the areas surrounding it or reading books in braille together.

Being called “Sweetness” again make Fig want to cry and when Figure calls Seek “My love” it melts and holds it close.

Sometimes they visit the hotel. Full of painful memories though.

The connection between physical pain & tension, emotional blockages, and clinging attachments

This is knowledge I have realized and then forgotten, but I am remembering again now. It is not new to me or the world.

These last few days I've had lots of free time, which I've dedicated some of to caring for myself, especially my body. Ereyesterday (yes, we're bringing back some old english phrases) I massaged my legs and face; I even stuck my fingers in my mouth and rubbed my gums, the inside of my jaw, and up into that crease where the cheeks and gums join together, possibly the most sensitive area. Give it a shot sometime, you'll probably be surprised at how much tension is held just within your mouth. But oh man, my legs are so bad too. The pain isn't as bad when I take magnesium supplements (I think I have restless leg syndrome). I really enjoy the practice of touching my body & feeling my muscles & fascia to find the tension, and sometimes I look of anatomical diagrams of the muscle groups I'm attending to to satisfy a curiosity and get a better idea of what exists just on the other side of my skin.

Anyways, theres a poetic resemblance between my ability to now stop clenching when I notice my muscles tightening and my ability to release my grip on that which I desire, tell myself I need, and the feelings and emotional pains so familiar to me; the improvements parallel each other. Right now I can both relax my jaw and not feel like I want him back in my life. I'm more accepting of my emotional state, without a desire to breeze through it and feel something "healthier," and I can hold my shoulders upright with increased ease. With my body at ease, things can pass through me much more easily; I do not hold onto as much as I do when my muscles are gripped, tight and unreleasing.

I think the point of saying this and sharing it is to document this reminder to myself and share it as advice to others: when you are stuck in a feeling or narrative, tend to your physical body. Emotions and the state of your body are directly connected. Emotional transformation can be assisted or even triggered with a physical opening. For me, massage is the best tool I have that is immediately accessible to me whenever I need it. Acupuncture is also great but that shit is expensive and its difficult to find a good practitioner. Movement is second best, and sometimes what I need more than massage. I tend to run when my anxiety is overbearing. But somatic movement is really great. It can look like dancing, intuitive mobility exercises, trashing around on the floor, or screaming and punching something. Whatever it is, it is the physical embodiment of emotional release. I neglect my need for massage too often though. Breath work is also fucking amazing. It is amazing what happens when you slow down and breathe fully.

I find it both frustrating and funny how often I forget what happens when I consistently tend to the needs, pain, and posture of my body, and how much it effects me emotionally and mentally. Without the care, my chronic pain gets worse and I become meaner, less forgiving, and more irritable. But when I take really good care of myself, and I get better, I start slacking because I feel like I "fixed it" and theres no pain to remind me to take care of myself. But honestly I'm curious what would happen if I reached that point of no longer having constant pain, and kept going, trying to improve even further. What new level of experiencing reality might I reach?

Yesterday I was noticing these very brief moments where I felt like I was seeing things more clearly and like I was more real or more fully experiencing reality; increasingly alive. This is actually what inspired me to look at this experience more closely, analyze the experiment. The flashes of being more present were exciting, it was like I was fully awake for the first time in a long time. I know giving up smoking has helped this too. Weed puts me in a haze and even when I sober up it still takes so long to fully escape that haze. And then cigs just limit my lungs' ability to absorb oxygen.

But it feels good to realize this again. I'm excited to keep going with it, nurturing it and keeping the momentum for as long as possible again. If I forget again, that's okay. I can forgive myself and trust I will remember it again when I need to. For now though, I am happy to be in my empress energy (thats a tarot reference for the unfamiliar). And I look forward to finding out what I attract by caring more deeply and affectionately for myself.
