The extreme Right was represented by the nationalists, who were contained in several parties. By far the most important was the National party (Stronnictwo Narodowe, or SN), the latest version of Roman Dmowski’s National Democratic (Endecja) movement. [..] Its program was based almost exclusively on fostering anti-Semitism while simultaneously combatting any activity from the Socialist and Communist Left. [..]

Even more extreme in their anti-Semitic views were the so-called “young” nationalists, who split off from the National Party to form the National Radical Camp (Obóz Narodowo-Radykalny, or ONR), which in turn divided into the ABC and Falanga factions. Outspokenly militant, the National Radicals fashioned their party along the lines of the European authoritarian movements then in vogue, and continually attacked the National party as being opportunistic and ready to compromise its nationalist principles. The Falanga group, youthful and dynamic, exerted a particularly powerful hold over the university students. In Bolesław Piasecki, they possessed a leader characterized by a leading Piłsudski-ite as an intelligent person but also “a cold-blooded gangster” without scruples who would use any means to seize absolute power and establish a genuine Fascist system in Poland.

Understandably, the two nationalist camps displayed [..] profound differences with the Sanacja [OZN] over certain political questions. [..] The Endeks [i.e. National Democrats] adopted as their cardinal principle the dictum that the nation itself, rather than the state or a political group, was solely responsible for its defense against internal as well as external enemies. When it became clear that [First Marshal] Rydz was actively involving the army in political life, the party was quick to voice its disapproval of this trend. [..] As a movement of action rather than rhetoric, the Falanga possessed a less developed body of doctrine than the National party. Yet certain points of divergence with the OZN’s ideology were discernible from this quarter as well. While not denying them outright, the Falanga dismissed completely the past accomplishments of Piłsudski and the Legionnaires as irrelevant for Poland’s future, totally ignored the broader political role of the armed forces, and advocated the overthrow of the April Constitution and other vestiges of the Sanacja system. Furthermore the state, the object of special reverence for the regime, was tolerated by the Falanga only insofar as it could serve as an instrument to realize “the historic destinies of the Polish Nation,” and Catholicism, mentioned favorably but vaguely in the Koc declaration, was made the basic premise of the entire Falanga program, which justified everything by the slogan “God is the highest end of Man.”

These differences notwithstanding, there were certain key similarities between the Sanacja and Nationalist ideologies. Although the Endek theory advanced no specific state structure as an objective, [..] the party still believed strongly in the existence of a powerful, centralized executive branch of government. Anti-Communist and pro-Catholic tones were as dear to the Endeks as to the Piłsudski-ites, and both groups placed strong emphasis on the Polish nation as the prime force in the country. The Falanga was [even] closer to the OZN in political outlook. Both movements believed in the compulsory enrollment of the community in a homogenous, universal, and hierarchical organization, in the Falanga’s case the so-called Political Organization of the Nation. This formation would be based on Führerism, Catholicism, anti-Communism, and Polish nationalism, and all political parties were to be eliminated. In short, the basic, underlying premises of both programs were very similar, while Piasecki had merely advanced them to a degree of sophistication far above the elementary level attained by [OZN leader Adam] Koc. Since the chief differences between these two groups were questions of extreme rather than of fundamental concepts, the Falanga and OZN appeared far more likely to find a common basis for cooperation than did the Camp of National Unity and the National party [..].

[The] emphasis on the preponderant role of the state in the national economy did not mean that the Sanacja was prepared to endorse the Falanga’s call for the complete abolition of the private sector. Koc was careful to qualify his praise for etatism by assuring the public that his camp would preserve the principles of private property as well as individual private enterprise. [..]

Not surprisingly, Koc refused to sanction any radical treatment of social questions, promising instead to solve economic and social problems “by looking to our national idea, which is the defensive strength and power of the State.” He proposed to seek solutions not by destroying current values through the use of revolutionary methods, “but by perfecting the existing institutions and creating new ones.” It was especially important that Poland develop and modernize “without shocks and violence, which always threaten the State.”

Kraków Rynek Główny 47 / Floriańska 2 Kamienica Margrabska, XIII-XVIII w. foto z 21 października i 4 listopada 2017 oraz 10 lipca 2019

Kamienica licznych naj - jeden z najstarszych murowanych budynków Krakowa; od początku swej historii jeden z największych mieszkalnych i zawsze jeden z najdroższych. W 1444 r. miała wartość 2100 grzywien - koszt budowy dużego kościoła lub średniego szlacheckiego zamku, porównywalny z ówczesnym rocznym dochodem kasy Krakowa. W listopadzie 2018 r. wyceniono ją na 55 mln zł.

Zbudowana pod koniec XIII w., zyskała swój aktualny rokokowy styl w pierwszej połowie XVIII w. W ciągu kolejnych stuleci przeszła pomniejsze adaptacje według projektów Szczepana Humberta (1814-1816), Antoniego Siedka (1882) i Teodora Hoffmanna (1920-1922). W latach 2003-2007 przywrócono jej fasadom pierwotne kolory w miejsce jasnoszarych, które nosiła przez ostatnie stulecie.

Pierwszym znanym jej właścicielem był wójt sandomierski Witko - stracił ją razem z głową, gdy opowiedział się po niewłaściwej stronie w buncie Alberta. Najdłużej, bo od końca XVI do pierwszej połowy XIX w., pozostawała w rękach rodu Myszkowskich-Wielopolskich, margrabiów ordynacji pińczowskiej - to wtedy zaczęła być nazywana Margrabską. W 1792 r. została rezydencją pierwszego prezydenta Krakowa - Franciszka Wielopolskiego - jednak tylko na pięć miesięcy i tylko na wyższych piętrach - parter był zajęty przez Zajazd Pod Opatrznością. Najsławniejszy z jego gości, Tadeusz Kościuszko, spędził tam noc z 13 na 14 grudnia 1792 r. W 1814 r. Wielopolscy sprzedali kamienicę Piotrowi Lipińskiemu, który dwa lata później ogłosił w Gazecie Krakowskiej co następuje:

Piotr Lipiński donosi Prześwietney Publiczności, iż własny Dom pod Nr. 499 w Krakowie w Rynku narożnie od ulicy Floryańskiey stoiący, urządził na Dom zaiezdny czyli Oberżę dla przeieżdzaiących, z wygodami i staynią w temże Domu, za naypomiernieyszą zapłatą. Można także w tym Domu miewać obiady zamowione i na kilkadziesiąt osób z wszelkiemi potrzebami i usługą.

Stary numer 499 widoczny jest wyżej na zdjęciu głównego portalu. „Oberża” przez kolejne stulecie była znana jako Hotel Drezdeński.

Reklamy miewały różną formę:

Wprost Sukiennic przy kościele stoi hotel w miasta czele - hotel pański! - któż go nie zna? Toż to hotel miasta Drezna! Kto po mieście nie rad gości chce mieć Kraków jak na dłoni, widzieć wiele - widzieć wielu w Drezdeńskim siada hotelu, i nie męcząc swe pedały z okna widzi Kraków cały (...) Wszystko z okna widzieć będzie. Chce wyjść to ma blisko wszędzie. Kalendarz Djabelski, 1888 r.

Stanisław Moniuszko po raz pierwszy zobaczył Kraków w zimnym maju 1858 r. Wrażenia opisał w liście do żony: Deszcz ze śniegiem prószył rzęsiście. Więc z kolei w zamkniętej hermetycznie dorożce kazałem siebie wieźć do Drezdeńskiego Hotelu. Tu nająłem sobie wygodny pokój z doskonałą pościelą, z widokiem na rynek, za cztery złote i gr. 10! Taniość ta ujęła mnie za serce.

W 1879 r. hotel gościł Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego, któremu miasto urządziło jubileusz 50-lecia pracy. Kalendarz Józefa Czecha relacjonował: O godzinie 9 1/2 delegat hr. Badeni w pełnym mundurze udał się do hotelu Drezdeńskiego z upoważnienia namiestnika, aby Jubilata zawiadomić, że Najj. Pan raczył go odznaczyć krzyżem komandorskim swego Imienia, na co Jubilat zastrzegł sobie, że sam przybędzie do Starostwa dla uroczystego wręczenia...

Bolesław Prus, w 1877 r. początkujący literat, przywitany został z mniejszą pompą: Około północy ledwiem dostukał się do hotelu. Zaspany szwajcar, po tutejszemu: odźwierny, podając mi klucz, wsadził w jego dziurkę kawałek zapalonego stoczka na patyku, abym gdzie na schodach nie utknął.

Gabriela Zapolska w 1898 r. również miała niespokojne noce: Stoję w Drezdeńskim hotelu i od piątej przez hejnał spać nie mogę.

Zatrzymali się tutaj także: hiszpańska tancerka i ówczesna międzynarodowa gwiazda Pepita de Oliva (w grudniu 1854 r.), bł. Edmund Bojanowski (w 1862 r.) oraz rzeźbiarka Zofia Baltarowicz-Dzielińska (w 1917 r.), pierwsza studentka krakowskiej Akademii Sztuk Pięknych.

Kamienicę Margrabską mijają wszyscy przemierzający Drogę Królewską, więc królewsko pozdrawiała cesarza Franciszka Józefa I w jego oficjalnej podróży po Galicji: Hotel Drezdeński zawieszony gęsto flagami o barwach kraju i państwa, a ozdobiony na wszystkich ścianach zewnętrznego muru herbami wszystkich ziem Polski, imponujący sprawiał widok, gdy tę dekoracyę podniosło rzęsiste oświetlenie. Szum i szelest setki proporców i flag podobny był do szelestu orlich skrzydeł husarskich. ...relacjonował dziennikarz w 1881 r.

Ponad trzydzieści lat później podobnie świętowano zwycięstwo armii niemieckiej i austriacko-węgierskiej pod Gorlicami: Przy wejściu na Rynek zwraca uwagę dekoracja hotelu Drezdeńskiego; wszystkie okna przybrane niebiesko-białymi festonami, na froncie wielkie chorągwie. ...donosił krakowski Czas w 1915 r.

W 1876 r. kamienica i hotel przeszły w ręce rodziny Ziembińskich. Ich potomek po kądzieli, adwokat i taternik Władysław Krygowski, w 1980 r. wspominał: [Babcia Helena] była jedyną córką znanego w Krakowie właściciela restauracji w Hotelu Drezdeńskim, Ziembińskiego. Bywali tu często Artur Grottger, Józef Szujski, Ludwik Kubala, Michał Bałucki, Cyprian Godebski, czasami Matejko. (...) Ziembiński był przyjacielem młodzieży, wyrozumiałym dla tych, którzy apelowali do jego kredytu. (...) pożyczał pieniędzy niejednemu z powstańców [styczniowych], który musiał uciekać.

Brat Heleny, lekarz Jan Ziembiński, był jednym z założycieli Krakowskiego Towarzystwa Ginekologicznego, najstarszego w Polsce. Jego wkładem, oprócz fachowego, był Hotel jako miejsce zebrań, poczynając od założycielskiego, 30 października 1889 r. W tym samym miejscu w 1877 r. założono także Krakowskie Towarzystwo Techniczne.

Przez cały ten okres w kamienicy działały też liczne sklepy i przedsiębiorstwa. Hotel Drezdeński był adresem księgarni i wydawnictwa Józefa Czecha w latach 1859-1870. Sklep Józefa Rudnickiego jako jeden z pierwszych w Krakowie miał telefon i drewnianą witrynę wystawową. Tak reklamował się w 1896 r.:

...i w 1888 r., w tymże samym Kalendarzu Djabelskim:

Gdy wyjdziesz wieczór na A-B, chociażbyś miał oczy słabe, to uderzy weń jak cepem szyld przed Rudnickiego sklepem, i gablotki w ktorych panie widząc rzeczy śliczne, tanie, przypatrują się ciekawie tam po całych dniach: wystawie. Czego to tam nie ma bracie: tu koszule - a tu macie necessery, portmonety - tu nowości dla kobiety, tam pantofle dla mężulka, tam jedwabna znów koszulka - harmonjony - aristony - rękawiczek miljony, dla pań, panów i dla dzieci więc nie dziw, że każdy leci i coś z tego - coś z owego kupuje u Rudnickiego.

Firma przewozowa, kantor i biuro podróży Władysława Bujańskiego zarządzały stąd transportem międzynarodowym przez ponad pięćdziesiąt lat. Oto jego reklama z 1894 r.:

Ludwik Tomaszkiewicz prowadził tutaj zakład optyczny i sklep mechaniki precyzyjnej. Reklama z 1911 r.:

Na początku XX w. Adam Piasecki, fabrykant czekolady, otworzył tutaj swoją firmową cukiernię. Jej wystrój w 1916 r. zaprojektował Franciszek Mączyński. Firma istnieje do dziś - to krakowski „Wawel” - ale jej założyciel przypłacił życiem troskę o swoich pracowników. Aresztowany w 1944 r. za wydawanie im produktów firmy wbrew okupacyjnemu zakazowi, wywieziony ostatnim transportem więziennym w przeddzień przejęcia Krakowa przez Armię Czerwoną, zmarł z wycieńczenia w obozie Bergen-Belsen tuż po jego wyzwoleniu.

Hotel Drezdeński przeminął wraz ze swoją epoką. W międzywojniu do kamienicy wprowadził się świeżo powstały wraz z nowym państwem narodowy Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego. W ciągu kolejnych dekad do dziś zmieniały się tylko nazwy banków.

Kraków 47 Main Square / 2 Floriańska St. The Margrabska House, 13th-18th c. taken on 21 October and 4 November 2017 and 10 July 2019

The house of many most's - one of the oldest stone buildings of Kraków; one of the largest residential ones since the beginning of its history and always one of the highest priced. In 1444 it was worth 2100 grzywnas - the cost of building of a large church or a middle-sized castle, comparable with that time yearly income of the town of Kraków. In November 2018 it was quoted for 55 million zł.

Built in the late 13th c., it acquired its current Roccoco appearance in the first half of 18th c. During the next centuries it underwent minor adaptations by designs of Szczepan Humbert (1814-1816), Antoni Siedek (1882) and Teodor Hoffmann (1920-1922). In 2003-2007 it got back the original coloring, replacing the grays it was wearing for the last century.

Its first known owner was the Mayor of Sandomierz by name Witko - he lost the house together with his head, after choosing the wrong side in the rebellion of Mayor Albert. The longest - between the end of 16th to the first half of 19th c. - it had been remaining in the hands of the Myszkowski-Wielopolski family or the Margraves of the Pińczów Entail. That's the origin of its name - Margrabska means Margrave's. In 1792 it became the residence of the first President of Kraków - Franciszek Wielopolski - but just for five months and only on the upper floors, since the ground floor was taken by the Providence Inn. The most famous of its guests, Tadeusz Kościuszko, overnighted there between 13 and 14 December 1792. The Wielopolskis sold the house in 1814 to Piotr Lipiński, who two years later announced in The Krakowska Newspaper the following: Piotr Lipiński informs the Distinguished Public that he has furnished the House he owns at No. 499 on the corner of the Main Square and Floriańska Street for a Roadhouse or Inn for travellers, with comforts and a stable in this House, for the most moderate payment. One can also have dinners prepared to order in this House, for a few dozens of persons with all necessaries and service. (The 1st picture in the Polish text.) The old number 499 is visible on the photo of the main portal. The "Inn" had become known as the Drezdeński (Dresden) Hotel for the next century. (See the 2nd and 3rd ad.)

The composer Stanisław Moniuszko visited Kraków for the first time in the cold May of 1858. He described his impressions in a letter to his wife: It was sleeting copiously, so I took a hermetically shut coach to the Drezdeński Hotel. Here I rented a comfortable room with an excellent bedding, with a view on the Main Square, for four zlotys and 10 gr! This inexpensiveness warmed my heart. The writer Józef Ignacy Kraszewski was the Hotel's guest in 1879, when invited by the town for the festive celebration of the 50 years of his creative work. The Józef Czech Almanac related: At half past nine the delegate Count Badeni in the full uniform went to the Drezdeński Hotel under the authority of the Governor to inform the Jubilee that His Majesty has deigned to award him the Commander's Cross of His [Majesty's] Name, for which the Jubilee said he's going to come to the Governor's Office personally for the ceremony of decoration... Bolesław Prus, a beginning writer in 1877, was welcomed less pompously: Around the midnight I was finally let in after a great deal of knocking. A sleepy porter, called 'doorman' here, handed me the key, after sticking a piece of a lit candle in its hole, so I wouldn't trip somewhere on the stairs. Another writer, Gabriela Zapolska, also had restless nights in 1898: I've been staying in the Drezdeński Hotel and cannot sleep since 5 o'clock because of the Hejnał. Among others who stayed there were: A Spanish dancer and then world-famous celebrity Pepita de Oliva (December 1858), Blessed Edmund Bojanowski (1862), and a sculptor Zofia Baltarowicz-Dzielińska (1917), the first female student of the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts.

Anyone going down the Royal Route must pass by the Margrabska House, hence it was greeting in the royal manner the Emperor Franz Joseph I in his official travel across Galicia: The Drezdeński Hotel, thickly covered in flags with colours of the country and the state, and with the coats of arms of all Polish lands adorning its all outer walls, presented an imposing sight, when this decoration was emphasized by an ample illumination. The swish and rustle of the hundred pennants and flags resembled the rustle of the Hussar's eagle wings. ...reported a journalist in 1881. Over thirty years later, the victory of the German & Austro-Hungarian army at Gorlice was celebrated in a similar way: Upon the entering the Main Square, the Drezdeński Hotel's decoration draws one's attention; all the windows adorned with blue-white festoons, and there are large banners flowing on the front. ...the Cracovian Time paper reported in 1915.

In 1876 the Ziembiński family took over the House and the Hotel. Their descendant on the distaff side, a lawyer and mountaineer Władysław Krygowski, recalled in 1980: [Grandma Helena] was the only daughter of the owner of the restaurant in the Drezdeński Hotel, Ziembiński, famous in Kraków. Among the regulars were Artur Grottger, Józef Szujski, Ludwik Kubala, Michał Bałucki, Cyprian Godebski, sometimes Matejko. ... Ziembiński was a friend of the youth, understanding for those appealing to him about a credit. ...he used to lend money more than one of the [January] insurgents who had to run. Helena's brother, a physician Jan Ziembiński, was one of the founders of the Kraków Gynecological Society, the oldest in Poland. His contribution, besides the professional one, was the Hotel as the place of meetings, beginning from the inauguration on October 30th, 1889. Also the Kraków Technical Society was founded here in 1877.

Numerous shops and enterprises worked here all this time. The Drezdeński Hotel used to be the address of Józef Czech's bookstore & publishing house between 1859-1870. Józef Rudnicki's store had a phone and a wooden display window as one of the first in Kraków. The 4th picture is Rudnicki's ad from 1986; the 5th one, from 1894, belongs to Władysław Bujański's shipping company, exchange & travel office that had been running its world-wide business for over fifty years. The 6th ad, 1911, is Ludwik Tomaszkiewicz's optician shop and fine mechanics store. The poems are rhymed ads of the Hotel and the Rudnicki store from 1888. Adam Piasecki, a chocolate manufacturer, opened here his shop in the beginning of 20th c. Franciszek Mączyński designed its interior in 1916. The company exists to this day - it's "Wawel" - but its founder paid with his life for caring about his workers. Arrested in 1944 for giving them allowances of the company's produce against of the occupant's interdiction, carried off in the last prisoner transport on the eve of taking Kraków over by the Red Army, he died of exhaustion in the Belsen-Bergen camp just after its liberation.

The Drezdeński Hotel had gone with La Belle Époque. The National Development Bank, freshly created together with the new state, moved into the Margrabska House in the Interwar. Over the next decades, the only that's been changing to this day was the names of banks.

How does a token work?

Revenue Coin (RevCoin) is a revenue token. In buying RevCoins, you acquire the right to part of the company’s revenue. The settlement between the enterprise – the issuer of tokens – takes place by buying and burning tokens. This directly drives the increase in the value of other RevCoins. This is similar to the mentioned above share buyback mechanism, where the decreasing number of shares increases the price.

The community buys Revenue Coins : Blockchain technology allows reducing costs and formalities related to the purchase of tokens. Transaction security is ensured by the RVC smart contract, which has been audited by external companies.

Tajemniczy "Wallenrod"z Poszawsza na Żmudzi

Nazywał się Jan Prosper Witkiewicz. Pochodził ze słynnego rodu osiadłego na Żmudzi, pieczętującego się herbem Nieczuja, "z rodu ludzi niespokojnych, szlachetnych, nierzadko wspaniałych" (Zdzisław Piasecki). Był synem Wiktoryna, wicemarszałka powiatu rosieńskiego i Justyny z Mikuckich.

Urodził się 24 czerwca 1808 roku w dworku rodziców w Poszawszu na Żmudzi, został ochrzczony 28 czerwca 1808 r. (Poszawsz należał naonczas do parafii kurtowiańskiej).

Witkiewiczowie mieli majątek w sąsiednich Gordach, zbudowali tam kościół. W XVI-XVII ww. Poszawsz był własnością Bejnortów, wywodzących się ze znanego rodu szlacheckiego. Ostatni z nich, Stanisław, wychowanek o.o. jezuitów, jako bezdzietny nie miał spadkobierców. W swoim testamencie dwór w Poszawszu zapisał ojcom jezuitom. Po skasowaniu zakonu jezuitów, w 1773 r. dwór przeszedł w arendę, dzierżawił go podkomorzy Jan Wołkowski, po nim Poszawsz przejęli Witkiewiczowie.

We wspomnieniach spisanych przez bratanicę Jana Prospera Marię Witkiewiczównę zachował się opis dworu z tamtych czasów:

Dwór poszawski rozsiadł się szeroko na obszernym podwórzu, w środku którego były klomby kwiatów, krzewów, a wokoło biegła szeroka droga pod ganek o kilku schodkach, wsparty na kolumnach. (...)

W dworku w Poszawszu jeszcze przed dwoma laty mieściła się szkoła początkowa, obecnie dom został własnością prywatnych właścicieli.

Wokół domu rosną wiekowe dęby... W tym to uroczym zakątku na Żmudzi upływało dzieciństwo przyszłego "Wallenroda". Tu pobierał pierwsze nauki, a gdy podrósł wstąpił do gimnazjum w sąsiednich Krożach. Słynna szkoła gimnazjalna w Krożach podlegała Uniwersytetowi Wileńskiemu. Uczyło się w niej naonczas 411 uczniów. W tej to szkole w październiku 1823 r. został aresztowany i wywieziony do Wilna młody nauczyciel, filareta Jan Sobolewski i osadzony w więzieniu u Bazylianów, gdzie zastał już osadzonych filaretów razem z Adamem Mickiewiczem. W tym samym bodaj czasie w gimnazjum w Krożach zawiązano stowarzyszenie pod nazwą "Czarni Bracia", którego założycielami byli Jan Witkiewicz i Cyprian Janczewski uczniowie VI-ej klasy. Do stowarzyszenia należeli ponadto: Feliks Zielenowicz, Alojzy Pieślak, Mikołaj Suchocki i Wiktor Iwaszkiewicz. "Czarni Bracia" postanowili wywołać zamieszki w gimnazjum krożańskim i w innych szkołach i zakładach naukowych na Litwie. Liczono, że w ten sposób zwiększy się liczbę "winowajców" i przez to władze carskie złagodzą karę "promienistym". "Czarni Bracia" porozsyłali do dyrektora i uczniów gimnazjum, do studentów Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego listy, odezwy treści patriotycznej, w Krożach porozlepiali stosownej treści wiersze, których autorami byli Jan Witkiewicz, Cyprian Janczewski i Feliks Zielenowicz.

Komisja śledcza oddelegowana z Wilna przez senatora Nowosielcewa wykryła "spisek" i związek "Czarnych Braci" w Krożach. Aresztowano wszystkich. Po procesie zapadł wyrok niezwykle surowy. Na karę śmierci skazano Witkiewicza i Janczewskiego, pozostałych na dożywotnie ciężkie roboty i zesłanie. Wielki książę Konstanty złagodził kary. Janczewski i Zielenowicz otrzymali po 10 lat robót fortecznych w kajdanach, w twierdzy Bobrujskiej, następnie mieli być wcieleni do wojska na linii orenburskiej, bez prawa awansu. Witkiewiczowi,z powodu młodego wieku (był o rok młodszy od pozostałych) darowano życie. Został skazany razem z Pieślakiem, Iwaszkiewiczem i Suchockim na odbywanie służby w szeregach garnizonów na linii orenburskiej, bez prawa awansu, z odesłaniem do miejsca przeznaczenia w kajdanach. Wszystkich sześciu skazanych uczniów pozbawiono szlachectwa.

8 marca 1824 r. "Czarnych Braci" wywieziono z Wilna do Moskwy, skąd etapami, zakuci w kajdany szli przez długie miesiące do miejsca przeznaczenia - na linię orenburską.

Jan Witkiewicz został przydzielony do twierdzy w Orsku w 5 batalionie. Twierdza Orska była oddalona o 260 wiorst od Orenburga.

"Linia Orenburska" - miejsce zesłania Witkiewicza i jego kolegów z gimnazjum w Krożach - to rozrzucone wzdłuż rzeki Ural i jej dopływów między Rosją i Azją wojskowe posterunki graniczne na czele z miastem i twierdzą warowną Orenburg. Strzegły one ziem monarchii rosyjskiej na jej wschodnich rubieżach i chroniły przed napadami ludów stepowych, szczególnie z obszernych terytoriów Azji Środkowej, leżących na południe od ziem kazachskich. Kiedy Jan Witkiewicz i jego trzej koledzy gimnazjalni przybyli na linię orenburską w 1824 roku, by pełnić służbę graniczną - cały obszar stepowy ku północno - wschodowi od mórz Aralskiego i Kaspijskiego do basenu rzeki Irtysz i Toboł na północy, zajęty był przez Kazachów, zwanych wówczas Kirgizami, lub Kirgiz-Kajsakami. Stepy kazachskie były jedyną drogą łączącą Rosję z Azją Środkową, a więc pośrednikiem w kontaktach z Chiwą, Bucharą i Kokandą. Karawany z towarami na tej olbrzymiej przestrzeni były stale narażone na napady rozbójnicze, celem ich ukrócenia wysyłano w stepy silne ekspedycje karne. W tych operacjach brali udział zesłańcy, żołnierze granicznych batalionów Samodzielnego Korpusu Orenburskiego, a więc i Jan Witkiewicz (Władysław Jewsiewicki "Batyr").

Dekretem z 14 września 1824 r. zostali zesłani do Orenburga filareci Jan Czeczot, Adam Suzin i Tomasz Zan. Dzienniki Tomasza Zana, jego korespondencja do przyjaciół, stały się najlepszym świadectwem dziejów Jana Witkiewicza na zesłaniu orenburskim.

Z monotonnego życia w garnizonie orskim wyrywały Witkiewicza wypady w stepy kazachskie. Zaczął uczyć się języków miejscowych plemion, poznawać ich obrzędy, tradycje. Znakomicie opanował też język perski, arabski, a także język pusztu, którym porozumiewały się odległe ludy afgańskie. (Według wspomnień Alojzego Pieślaka, Witkiewicz znał, łącznie z europejskimi, 19 języków). Własnym doświadczeniem zdobywał wiedzę o historii i geografii tych ziem.

O zmianach w losie Witkiewicza, jako zesłańca politycznego, zadecydował szczęśliwy przypadek. We wrześniu 1829 r. przyjechał do Orska słynny niemiecki podróżnik i badacz - geolog, profesor Aleksander von Humboldt.

"Żyjąc na samej granicy stepów kirgiskich, bogatych we wszelką zwierzynę, Witkiewicz nabrał zamiłowania do myślistwa. Napady na naszą linię pograniczną przez słabo wówczas ujarzmionych Kirgizów rozbudzały w gorącym i ulegającym wzruszeniu młodzieńcu, z natury skłonnym do czynów bohaterskich - pasję do niebezpiecznych wycieczek z niemiłego dlań Orska. Doskonale uzbrojony, na dziarskim koniu wypadał w stepy, zawierał znajomości i przyjaźnie z sułtanami kirgiskimi; nocował w aułach, poznawał ich język i obyczaje (...)

W 1829 r. Aleksander Humboldt, badając Góry Uralskie, zatrzymał się w drodze do Orenburga w twierdzy Orskiej. Przypadkowo przygotowano mu kwaterę w mieszkaniu Witkiewicza dlatego, że wydawała się ona najbardziej wygodna dla wypoczynku uczonego podróżnika. Sam Witkiewicz był w stepach. Ku własnemu zdziwieniu Humboldt ujrzał w skromnej bibliotece w jednym z przydzielonych mu pokoi swoją książkę "Essai sur Nouvelle Espagne [Essai politique syr le Royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne, 1881] oraz inne książki ujawniające zainteresowanie właściciela. Zapytał więc, czyje to jest mieszkanie i zdumiał się, gdy mu wyjaśniono, że mieszkanie i książki należą do żołnierza liniowego batalionu. Po przybyciu do Orenburga, wstawił się za Witkiewiczem u gubernatora wojskowego [...]" (ze wspomnień towarzysza Jana Witkiewicza, z czasów jego służby w Komisji Granicznej w Orenburgu, porucznika Konstantina Bucha).

Po powrocie do Petersburga, Humboldt w sprawie Witkiewicza i jego kolegów krożańskich zabiegał u cara Mikołaja I. Zabiegi te odniosły skutek. Jan Witkiewicz otrzymał awans na podoficera. Po pewnym czasie opuścił Orsk i na stałe zamieszkał w Orenburgu, w charakterze tłumacza został przydzielony do Komisji Granicznej. W kwietniu 1832 r. awansowano Witkiewicza do stopnia podchorążego (portupiej - praporszczik), który był już pierwszym szczeblem do epoletów oficerskich.

W Orenburgu Witkiewicz przez pewien czas mieszkał razem z Tomaszem Zanem. Od tej pory w korespondencji Zana często zamiast "Witkiewicz" pojawia się "Batyr". "Batyr", według miejscowych obyczajów oznacza: rycerz, bohater, dzielny człowiek, wspaniały jeździec w stepowym wydaniu.

W 1834 r. "Batyr" został oficerem i adiutantem naczelnika Kraju Orenburskiego, Wasilija Perowskiego. 18 grudnia 1834 r. Zan zanotował: "Batyr" szczyci się szczególniejszymi względami dobrego i sprawiedliwego naczelnika. Wyjeżdża za kilka dni za urlopem do domu, stoi na drodze bardzo właściwej, może sobie piękną zrobić tu karierę znaczenia i wpływu. Część tej życzliwości spływa na nas i innych?.

Na święta Bożego Narodzenia "Batyr" wyjechał przez Wilno do Poszawsza, do swej matki i brata. Z pobytu w stronach rodzinnych wrócił do Orenburga 29 stycznia 1835 r. Odtąd będzie czynił intensywne przygotowania związane z zaplanowaną wyprawą dyplomatyczną do Buchary, gdzie miał zbadać coraz bardziej zagrażającą aktywność angielskich agentów, a także skłonić chana Buchary do większej wymiany handlowej z Rosją. O wyprawie Witkiewicza do Buchary pisał Tomasz Zan w swoim liście do Karola Chodkiewicza, 5 listopada 1835 r. : [...] "Rad się wybiera [Witkiewicz] w drogę, jako przedstawiającą wielkie niebezpieczeństwa, w których walczeniu rozpozna swoje siły i uczuje, iż ma jakoweś życie. Trzeba wiedzieć, że ile razy zostaje na miejscu, skarży się na nudę i na brak pobudek do czucia i do działania. Mawiał, iż wątpi, aby miał żywy powrócić".

Witkiewiczowi poruczono wykonać niezwykłe zadanie wagi państwowej. Wykonał je pomyślnie, z Buchary powrócił zdrów i cały.

W 1836 r. Witkiewicz opuścił Orenburg. Wyjeżdżał do Petersburga, gdzie Komitet Azjatycki przy Ministerstwie Spraw Zagranicznych miał go przygotować do następnej wyprawy. Tym razem była to misja dyplomatyczna Jana Witkiewicza w Afganistanie.

"Misja dyplomatyczna do Afganistanu spowodowała, że imię Witkiewicza jest wymieniane w wielu językach w różnych dokumentach, wspomnieniach i opracowaniach na temat ścierania się wpływów rosyjsko - angielskich w Azji Środkowej i w Afganistanie.

[...] Był też pierwszym Polakiem, który się tam znalazł, co również ma swój wyraz we wszystkich prawie dokumentach historycznych i opracowaniach.

Był pierwszym dyplomatą rosyjskim w Afganistanie występującym z misją oficjalną, w mundurze oficerskim?. (Władysław Jewsiewicki "Batyr")

Z poręczonych mu misji, agent carski w Afganistanie Iwan Witkiewicz wywiązał się doskonale, odniósł oszałamiający sukces w pojedynku dyplomatycznym z agentem angielskim, porucznikiem Alexandrem Burnesem. I wtedy - nagle Witkiewicz został odwołany do Petersburga.

W Petersburgu, w hotelu "Paryż" 8 maja 1839 r., w wieku niespełna 31 lat "Batyr" poniósł śmierć w nader tajemniczych okolicznościach. Według wersji oficjalnej (rządu carskiego), Jan Prosper Witkiewicz zginął śmiercią samobójczą. Według wersji niektórych badaczy rosyjskich, mógł go uśmiercić wywiad angielski. Według wersji rodzinnej - został zamordowany przez carską ochronkę, "bo za dużo wiedział". W polskim przekazie Jan Prosper Witkiewicz znany jest jako "Wallenrod", który prowadził podwójną grę polityczną, polegającą na sprowokowaniu wybuchu wojny między Rosją i Anglią.
