I can now say that I once entertained an Oscar winner at my apartment. Well, he was there for my roommate - and he had not won anything yet - but it still counts!
Adrien won best hair & make-up for the movie The Whale.
It's always fun when a Canadian is nominated for the Oscars, ever more so when they win, but it's a different kind of thrill when you can say 'He is from my hometown. In fact, he was in my home once.'

"La ballena (The Whale)"

SIZE DOES MATTER
Now playing:
Tumblr media
The Whale--Charlie is an English professor, passionately teaching online courses in essay writing, but his center square on the Zoom grid is always blacked out. He claims the camera on his computer doesn't work, but his students, inevitably, are intrigued. Ever self-deprecating, Charlie assures them that they're not missing much.
This isn't really true. Charlie, played by Brendan Fraser, is morbidly obese, weighing in at 600 pounds. He lives alone in, and works from, a shabby apartment, visited by his sole friend Liz (Hong Chau), a nurse who tries to warn him about the imminent danger of death he's in. At the same time, she serves as his pained enabler, supplying him with fried chicken and candy bars. The two share a link to the tragedy which led to Charlie's self-destructive eating habits.
In the course of the story, Charlie bribes his furious estranged teenage daughter (Sadie Sink) to spend time with him; he's also pestered by a young missionary kid (Ty Simpkins). Eventually we get to meet Charlie's ex (Samantha Morton) as well. Almost everything takes place in or just outside the apartment; director Darren Aronofsky wisely hasn't bothered to "open out" Samuel D. Hunter's play (Hunter wrote the adaptation). This concentrated setting only adds to the claustrophobia of Charlie's situation.
It's hard to miss the story's parallel to that of Aronofsky's 2008 The Wrestler--a guy at the end of his physical rope tries for an eleventh-hour reconciliation with his daughter. And as Mickey Rourke, in a comeback role, was the story with The Wrestler, the story here is Brendan Fraser, likewise in a comeback role.
I've always found Fraser enviable--hunky looks plus an unpretentious likability. Thus even the many terrible movies he's starred in come across like they were fun to do, and that in itself made stuff like George of the Jungle and Journey to the Center of the Earth less dreary, at least a little (maybe not Furry Vengeance).
But in The Whale, Aronofsky has put Fraser's soulful sweetness to use beyond merely ingratiating himself with the audience. Working inside harrowingly convincing prosthetic makeup by Adrien Morot, Fraser is an angelic presence as Charlie, radiant with compassion and love, yet also with reflective intelligence, and depths of unexpressed sorrow and anger and desperation.
There may not really be a lot to the film beyond Fraser's performance, and the crisp, controlled mix of anger and adoration in Hong Chau's Liz. Some scenes here verge on the overwrought, I suppose, and there are revelations that would probably play better on the stage. But nothing seems campy or patronizing. The Whale is a vehicle, perhaps, but it's a vehicle for an unforgettable, maybe even classic star turn.

I vincitori dei Premi Oscar 2023
Tumblr media
Read the full article

B-5 : Oscars 2023 Predictions - A Film fan's perspective (Part - 3)
We are just a week away from the 95th Academy Awards, a.k.a. The Oscars®. It will happen on March 13 at 5:30 PM IST. The celebrations of the Oscar season are at their peak. Amid the fun and excitement, here's a look at the final segment of the technical award categories and our predictions of the winners:-
Tumblr media
Best Sound
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Viktor Prášil, Frank Kruse, Markus Stemler, Lars Ginzel, and Stefan Korte
Avatar: The Way of Water – Julian Howarth, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Dick Bernstein, Christopher Boyes, Gary Summers, and Michael Hedges
The Batman – Stuart Wilson, William Files, Douglas Murray, and Andy Nelson
Elvis – David Lee, Wayne Pashley, Andy Nelson, and Michael Keller
Top Gun: Maverick – Mark Weingarten, James H. Mather, Al Nelson, Chris Burdon, and Mark Taylor
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prediction(s): All Quiet on the Western Front/Top Gun: Maverick
It's usually a war/military movie or a musical that wins the Sound award. Topgun: Maverick seems to be a strong competitor because of the Action-filled dogfighting scenes and final combat in the climax. Western Front is also a strong contender because of the battle scenes.
Best Production Design
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Production Design: Christian M. Goldbeck; Set Decoration: Ernestine Hipper
Avatar: The Way of Water – Production Design: Dylan Cole and Ben Procter; Set Decoration: Vanessa Cole
Babylon – Production Design: Florencia Martin; Set Decoration: Anthony Carlino
Elvis – Production Design: Catherine Martin and Karen Murphy; Set Decoration: Bev Dunn
The Fabelmans – Production Design: Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Karen O'Hara
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
From the 1950s to the 1970s, the sets well-exhibit the story of the King of Rock n Roll - from his home to the carnivals to the stadiums to the TV and recording studios to the lavishing hotels of Las Vegas.
Best Cinematography
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – James Friend
Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths – Darius Khondji
Elvis – Mandy Walker
Empire of Light – Roger Deakins
Tár – Florian Hoffmeister
Tumblr media
Prediction: All Quiet on The Western Front
It's because the camera work of James Friend captures the horrors of the First World War. The fighting in broad daylight is realistic and gives chills every time you see it.
Best Makeup & Hairstyling
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Heike Merker and Linda Eisenhamerová
The Batman – Naomi Donne, Mike Marino, and Mike Fontaine
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Camille Friend and Joel Harlow
Elvis – Mark Coulier, Jason Baird, and Aldo Signoretti
The Whale – Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Anne Marie Bradley
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
Is it possible to make a movie on Elvis Presley without his puffed hair and sideburns? Hairstyles play a crucial role in his era of the 1950s-70s.
Best Costume Designing
Nominees:
Babylon – Mary Zophres
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Ruth E. Carter
Elvis – Catherine Martin
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Shirley Kurata
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris – Jenny Beavan
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
The film is all about colors, nostalgia, and costumes of the Presley years.
Best Film Editing
Nominees:
The Banshees of Inisherin – Mikkel E. G. Nielsen
Elvis – Matt Villa and Jonathan Redmond
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Paul Rogers
Tár – Monika Willi
Top Gun: Maverick – Eddie Hamilton
Tumblr media
Prediction: Top Gun: Maverick
The editing of the sortie scenes and the final aerial battle is what makes the Top Gun sequel the ultimate winner of the editing award.
Best Visual Effects
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Frank Petzold, Viktor Müller, Markus Frank, and Kamil Jafar
Avatar: The Way of Water – Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon, and Daniel Barrett
The Batman – Dan Lemmon, Russell Earl, Anders Langlands, and Dominic Tuohy
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Geoffrey Baumann, Craig Hammack, R. Christopher White, and Dan Sudick
Top Gun: Maverick – Ryan Tudhope, Seth Hill, Bryan Litson, and Scott R. Fisher
Tumblr media
Prediction: Avatar: The Way of Water
Cameron's film can become the first sequel to win the same award in this category. The beautiful visuals of the world of Pandora would surely take the trophy home.
