Keith Edwards at No Lies Detected:
Since Election Day, I’ve felt an eerie quiet fall over America.  Liberals are showing little of the defiant energy that marked their preparation for Trump’s presidency after his shock 2016 win. Americans are reporting exhaustion and coping by hopping onto planes or into unreality. Stories of Americans deciding to flee abroad have become common, an ironic turn for the greatest hub of migration in human history. Some billionaires are even telling themselves that maybe Trump won’t be so bad. Checking out surely is easier.  In the closing days of World War II, people on the ruined streets of eastern Europe hailed passing Soviet tanks as their deliverers from decades of war, dictatorship, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. As it became clear that they had merely traded one totalitarian dictator for another, people coped not only by retreating inward, but even by giving themselves over to the regime mind, body, and soul. During the Soviet occupation of Poland, anti-communist writer and poet Czesław Miłosz likened the phenomenon to a patient taking a pill in his book The Captive Mind:
[Despite [the intellectual’s] resistance and despair, the crisis approaches. It can come in the middle of the night, at his breakfast table, or on the street. It comes with a metallic click as of engaged gears. But there is no other way. That much is clear. There is no other salvation on the face of the earth. This revelation lasts a second; but from that second on, the patient begins to recover. For the first time in a long while, he eats with relish, his movements take on vigor, his color returns. He sits down and writes a "positive" article, marveling at the ease with which he writes it. In the last analysis, there was no reason for raising such a fuss. Everything is in order. He is past the "crisis." ]
Miłosz fancifully called it the “pill of Murti-Bing” after a character from a then-current science fiction novel. But as we can see today, liberal public figures are taking the pill, they are “writing the positive article.” Taunting conservatives as they deluded themselves about Trump – from my own friends and family to the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal  was a common experience after his first victory; looking on as liberals lie to themselves after his second is a new and bewildering one. This is exactly the wrong time to check out.  Not only does it amount to “obeying in advance,” it emboldens would-be autocrats to proceed with their plans. As if aware of their guilty consciences, history’s dictators have always been profoundly afraid of the people they seek to oppress, especially before they solidified their grip on power. Even the most cunning of them won’t make a play for absolute power without a hand so strong and the opposition’s so weak that victory is assured: It took Vladimir Putin twenty years fully to establish personal rule in Russia, and only then when fear of a global pandemic kept people confined inside.
Fortunately for us, our country is not the Russia of the 2010s, which had only a short experience of democracy and even shorter experience of democratic institutions. Unfortunately for us, Donald Trump was seemingly designed in a lab to overwhelm our capacity for outrage and benumb us to his ever more brazen violations of our norms and laws. As Tom Nichols has written, Trump is counting on this. His firehose strategy of obnoxious cabinet nominations is a small taste of his planned war of attrition on the American psyche.
Trump will not be invincible in his second term. The good guys scored a major victory in forcing accused sex-pest Matt Gaetz to withdraw before his nomination even came before the Senate for a vote. This has the double effect of taking this (hatefully coiffed) piece off the board, but it exposes the next most vulnerable picks – say, the increasingly tragicomic Pete Hegseth or the cartoonishly villainous Kash Patel – to media, public, and ultimately Senate scrutiny. It seems likely others will share Gaetz’s fate.
Keith Edwards has a perfect article in his Substack that liberals should not check out of the political process, because fighting Donald Trump and Trumpism is importing.

Recent findings that plants employ a drought-survival mechanism to also defend against nutrient-sucking pests could inform future crop breeding programs aimed at achieving better broadscale pest control. Using an advanced fluorescent biosensor (ABACUS2) that can detect tiny changes in plant hormone concentrations at the cellular scale, scientists saw that abscisic acid (ABA), usually linked with drought response, started closing the plant's entry gates within 5 hours of being infested with spider mites. Microscopic leaf pores (stomata) are important for gas exchange but are also the major sites for water loss. When there is a water shortage, plants act to conserve water by producing the drought stress hormone ABA to close their stomata.

Touch prompts: “leaning into the other’s side” for Shawn and Juliet
i apologize in advance for the peter pan references my mom rewatched it and they overtook my body before i knew what was happening. anyway this was like 4 different half-formed moment ideas and 3 different half formed thematics that sort of got stitched together - there was a lot of material on the cutting room floor, much of it suited for a very tonally different fic - and im not sure im 100% happy w how it turned out, but im trying to be unserious about it. enjoy!
One morning, three months into dating Shawn, Juliet digs a VHS of Peter Pan out of storage and does her paperwork in the conference room.
Tamara Goldberg is seven and CPS is stuck in the traffic pileup that happened after that semi got flipped over by the salsa dancing studio. Minimal casualties – Vick sent one of her other units – but Juliet is strangely grateful. Tamara (sweet-faced and quiet for her age and giggly when Shawn pretends to pull a packet of fruit gushers out of her ear) needs the distraction: Mom arrested, Dad a nonstarter, Uncle nearly incoherent when they brought him in. Therapy, Juliet thinks – therapy will be good for everyone involved.
Juliet never used to be big into therapy, but the department made her get one last year, and it’s actually kind of helped.
This case, Tamara’s case, was one of those long-haul things that dragged out over the span of two weeks and messed with everyone’s heads. Nothing close to Yin (Juliet does not want to think about Yin, therapy or not), but mundane bad. Can’t stop ‘til it’s figured out bad. There’s a little girl involved, bad. Shawn and Gus definitely slept at the Psych office a couple times (a fact Juliet knows) and Carlton might have slept at the station (something she’s forced to deduce, but Juliet is a good detective), bad. Juliet herself hasn’t had a good night’s sleep in days, hasn’t eaten anything but takeout for a week, and hasn’t had sex with her boyfriend for longer. Kind of hard to get laid when you’re both doing overtime at the same workplace that also happens to have a strict no interoffice dating rule. She’s mostly been too exhausted to dwell on it. It’s over now, almost, anyway.
“There it is, Wendy! Second star to the right and straight on til morning!”
Tamara kicks her feet slightly as the Disney music plays. She’s completely absorbed by the conference room TV, enough that the bustling sounds coming through the half-open door and the scratch of Juliet’s pen on paper don’t bother her. They don’t really bother Juliet either; she likes knowing that everything is mostly back to normal.
“Don’t you two pests have anywhere else to be?”

Before he was abruptly fired last month, Derek Copeland worked as a trainer at the US Department of Agriculture’s National Dog Detection Training Center, preparing beagles and Labrador retrievers to sniff out plants and animals that are invasive or vectors for zoonotic diseases, like swine flu. Copeland estimates the NDDTC lost about a fifth of its trainers and a number of other support staff when 6,000 employees were let go at the USDA in February as part of a government-wide purge orchestrated by the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Before he received his termination notice, he says, Copeland had just spent several months training the only dog stationed in Florida capable of detecting the Giant African land snail, an invasive mollusk that poses a significant threat to Florida agriculture. “We have dogs for spotted and lantern flies, Asian longhorn beetles,” he says, referring to two other non-native species. “I don’t think the American people realize how much crap that people bring into the United States.”
Dog trainers are just one example of the kind of highly specialized USDA staff that have been removed from their stations in recent weeks. Teams devoted to inspecting plant and food imports have been hit especially hard by the recent cuts, including the Plant Protection and Quarantine program, which has lost hundreds of staffers alone.
“It’s causing problems left and right,” says one current USDA worker, who like other federal employees in this story asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. “It’s basically a skeleton crew working now,” says another current USDA staffer, who noted that both they and most of their colleagues held advanced degrees and had many years of training to protect US food and agriculture supply chains from invasive pests. “It’s not something that is easily replaced by artificial intelligence.”
“These aren’t your average people,” says Mike Lahar, the regulatory affairs manager at US customs broker behemoth Deringer. “These were highly trained individuals—inspectors, entomologists, taxonomists.”
Lahar and other supply chain experts warn that the losses could cause food to go rotten while waiting in ports and could lead to even higher grocery prices, in addition to increasing the chances of potentially devastating invasive species getting into the country. These dangers are especially acute at a moment when US grocery supply chains are already reeling from other business disruptions such as bird flu and President Trump’s new tariffs.
“If we're inspecting less food, the first basic thing that happens is some amount of that food we don't inspect is likely to go bad. We're going to end up losing resources,” says supply chain industry veteran and software CEO Joe Hudicka.
The USDA cuts are being felt especially in coastal states home to major shipping ports. USDA sources who spoke to WIRED estimate that the Port of Los Angeles, one of the busiest in the US, lost around 35 percent of its total Plant Protection and Quarantine staff and 60 percent of its “smuggling and interdiction” employees, who are tasked with stopping illegal pests and goods from entering the country. The Port of Miami, which handles high volumes of US plant imports, lost about 35 percent of its plant inspectors.
Navigating the workforce cuts has “been absolute chaos,” says Armando Rosario-Lebrón, a vice president of the National Association of Agriculture Employees, which represents workers in Plant Protection and Quarantine program.
“These ports were already strained in how they process cargo, and now some of them have been completely decimated,” Rosario-Lebrón says. "We could be back to pandemic-level issues for some goods if we don't fix this."
The Department of Agriculture did not respond to a request for comment. Republican senator Joni Ernst, who has been a vocal backer of DOGE’s efforts, previously publicly supported the USDA’s dog training program and cosponsored legislation that would give it permanent funding. Her office declined to comment on cuts made to it.
Two federal judges and an independent agency that assesses government personnel decisions have already ordered that fired USDA employees be reinstated. Earlier this week, the USDA said that it was pausing the terminations for 45 days and would “develop a phased plan for return-to-duty.” But affected staff remain in the dark about their future, and the Trump administration has signaled it will fight court decisions to reinstate employees, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt calling one of the rulings “absurd and unconstitutional.”
As these legal and regulatory battles continue to play out, Hudicka says he anticipates a number of trickle-down effects to happen, such as local market wars over resources, which bigger cities and larger grocery chains will be better equipped for than mom-and-pops and rural communities. Hudicka says that allowing shipping containers to sit uninspected could also impact other sectors, as the delays will prevent them from being reused for other kinds of goods. “Those containers are supposed to be moving stuff every day, and now they’re just parked somewhere,” he says.
Kit Johnson, the director of trade compliance at the US customers broker John S. James, also predicts prices and waste to increase. But what raises the most alarms for him is the increased likelihood of invasive species slipping through inspection cracks. He says the price of missing a threatening pest is “wiping out an entire agricultural commodity,” an event that could have “not just economic but national security impacts.”
Decimating the Department of Agriculture could even have consequences for US Customs and Border Protection, which deploys the dogs trained by Copeland and other staffers at the National Dog Detection Training Center. CBP works closely with the USDA in other ways as well, particularly at points of entry. The two agencies run the Agricultural Quarantine Inspection program, but it’s funded by the USDA. Many Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service programs do not rely on taxpayer dollars to operate but instead collect fees from importers and other industry players. In this way, it subsidizes some of CBP’s agriculture-related activities. CBP did not respond to a request for comment.
As the fired USDA workers wait to hear whether their reinstatements will actually take place, ports are beginning to feel their absence. “There aren’t as many inspections being done, and it doesn’t just put us at risk,” says Lahar. “It puts our farmers and our food chains at risk.”

Fandom: Boungo stray dogs

Ler: Chuuya Nakahara
Tumblr media
It was a sunny afternoon in Yokohama. Dazai was sprawled on the couch of the Ada's office, bored out of his mind as usual. When an idea struck him - why not go torment his favorite partner, Chuuya?
Soon enough he was in front of the feared Mafia's headquarters, ready to break through the intimidating place.
Dazai strolled into Chuuya's office without knocking. "Chuuuuyaaaa, entertain me!" he whined, draping himself over the smaller man's desk. Chuuya glared up at him irritably. "Get lost, you parasite. I'm busy, and you shouldn't even be here!"
But Dazai was not to be deterred so easily. He started poking and prodding at Chuuya, twisting a lock of his hair around his finger or poking his cheek. "Chiiibiii! Don't ignore me~ Play with me!" Chuuya finally snapped. "That's it, get out of here before I throw you out myself!"
He lunged at Dazai, flinging him off the desk and cocking his fist back for a punch. But the suicidal knew Chuuya's moves all too well - he dodged gracefully and landed neatly behind Chuuya's desk chair. Unfortunately Chuuya's momentum carried him too far, his flailing arm brushing against Dazai's side.
Dazai let out an un characteristic squeak and flinched away violently, stumbling over his feet. His sudden loss of balance had Chuuya staring in shock. Then a devious smirk spread over the red-head's face as realization dawned. "Why Dazai...are you...ticklish?"
The tallest opened his mouth to deny it but Chuuya was too quick, advancing on him with wiggling fingers poised. "No! Stay away from me you demon!" But Dazai was no match for Chuuya's speed and accuracy. Within moments he was collapsed on the floor, squirming and giggling helplessly under Chuuya's merciless tickling.
"Chuuuyaaaa ha-stop! I c-can't breathe!" Dazai choked out between peals of laughter. But the executive showed no signs of letting up, enjoying having found one of Dazai's rare weaknesses at last. It seemed the tables had well and truly turned - all thanks to an accidental brush and Dazai's ticklish secret being uncovered.
Chuuya continued his tickle assault on Dazai, who was curled up on the floor desperately trying to protect his vulnerable spots. "Please *haha* mercy!" Dazai begged, tears running down his cheeks from laughing so hard. But Chuuya was having far too much fun to stop just yet.
He redoubled his efforts, wriggling his fingers under Dazai's arms that proved to be an extra sensitive spot. Dazai shrieked, thrashing wildly in vain attempts to escape the onslaught. "You're e-evil Chuuya! No respect f-for your dear partnehhHEHrr !"
Chuuya simply laughed at Dazai's misery. "Consider this payback for all the times you've annoyed me, you pest!" Still he took some pity on his partner after a few more minutes, ceasing his tickling attack. Dazai lay there limp and panting, face flushed.
"You really are...too much fun to tease like this," Chuuya admitted with a grin. He offered Dazai a head pat, brushing his dark fluffy locks away from his face. "Next time I think I'll go for your neck, yeah that sounds like a great plan..."
And Chuuya didn't need anything more to make the lovely detective's blush deepen.

Esther Kimani, a computer programmer from Kenya, has won the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering’s Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. Her groundbreaking early crop pest and disease detection device wowed the judges, thanks to its remarkable ability to swiftly detect and identify agricultural pests and diseases. This innovative tool can reduce crop losses for smallholder farmers by up to 30% and boost yields by as much as 40%.
Harnessing the power of solar energy, the device employs computer vision algorithms and advanced machine learning to detect and identify crop pests, pathogens, or diseases, and the nature of the infection or infestation. Farmers receive notifications via SMS, making this an affordable alternative to traditional detection methods at just $3 per month—significantly cheaper than hiring drones or agricultural inspectors.

yeah no this is peak whatever i make from drohnen here on out will never compare to the weirdness or coolness of the Fae and their cities. I always planned on making weird living cities for this alien world but i never imagined it like this. oh my god
Tumblr media
So I think I might have to increase the longevity of the Immobile Cities by A Lot just because the cities are so advanced with what I added but here are some various things about the Fae and their Immobile Cities.
They actually generate electricity from their host's pulse using a blood turbine!
The fae have an acute sense of taste in order to detect diseases in their host's blood and to either fetch medicine or to do something about it themselves
Very few Fae are actually responsible for creating the galls they live in, and are their "engineers."
Some galls are produced to feed the Fae but the Fae also farm a lot of crops for the City on the City, though they get a lot more of their food from outside (some of their food are bloodsucking pests that want to feed on their host).
The fae are still transformative Comids, and if the host requests of them, they can actually give new features to their host! Some hosts are able to request complete transformations of their bodies, though, the process may take decades to do.
The Fae's relationship with their host ranges all over the place, from platonic, familial, romantic, and spiritual awe. Nonetheless, it's generally positive, or at the very least, neutral, like how one views your house.
This way of living has actually grown much more popular in recent years due to the much smaller amount of space and energy it requires, and has extended worldwide far past the very isolated groups that practiced similar ways.
When Fae die, they are either fed to the host or are laid to rest within the host. The latter is far creepier in the long run because old corpses of Immobile cities have thousands of smaller corpses inside.

These futuristic machines offer a glimpse into the potential of sustainable farming, where innovation meets efficiency, paving the way for a healthier and more productive future for agriculture.
The Weed Problem in Agriculture
Weeds have been a persistent challenge for farmers, creating a constant battle for resources in the field. These invasive plants not only compete with crops for vital sunlight, nutrients, and water but also provide a safe haven for pests that can wreak havoc on harvests. The presence of weeds significantly reduces crop yields and quality, making effective weed management essential for agricultural success. For centuries, farmers have relied on labor-intensive methods and chemical herbicides to combat this problem, but these approaches are not without their flaws.

SLIME MONSTERS
(lore under cut)
Name: Slime [SLY-mm]
Class: Monster
Subclass: Terrian, Weightclass varies
PPL Category: 2 - Mostly harmless to peoples but invasive or detrimental to the environment.
Forger: ???
OVERVIEW
Slime monsters (also known as "slimes") are an ancient species of monster. Their place and time of origin, as well as the identity of their divine creator, remains unknown. There are several subspecies of slime monster, and some researchers theorize that they do not all share the same creator. While most slimes are not dangerous to people, all of them are considered harmful to the world's natural ecosystem.
HABITAT
Slimes cannot survive in hot, dry conditions for long. They prefer cool, damp environments such as caves, dark forests, and swamps. They are a common pest in basements and gardens worldwide. They often venture away from their lairs in search of food after dark, then return home at sunrise.
BIOLOGY
Different species of slimes have different properties, but all of them are covered in a thick layer of mucus which may be slimy, sticky, corrosive, malodorous, or neutral. They have no organs, only a permeable membrane of skin with gelatinous goo for innards. Though they have no brains or nervous systems at all, slimes are considered living creatures, as they react to stimuli and actively participate in their own survival. It seems that their intelligence is quite low, behaving purely on their mysterious, magical instincts. How they are able to sense their prey is still unknown, but researchers theorize that their mucus membrane can detect odors and sense vibrations in the air.
Because they have no bones, slime monsters are able to squeeze themselves through tiny spaces. They have quickly spread themselves across the globe by infiltrating ships and carriages, going undetected for long periods of time until they have multiplied out of control.
Slimes breed asexually by dividing themselves into two individuals. They can keep dividing until their offspring is the size of a pea. They gain more mass by eating, and lose half of their mass each time they divide. Exactly what prompts a slime to divide naturally is unknown, but they can also be forced to divide by cutting them into pieces.
Slimes will dry out and die if conditions are not moist enough. They can also be killed by freezing them solid, boiling them with flame, and exposure to large amounts of salt, which harms their mucus membrane and dries them out. (Note: red slimes are resistant to boiling)
Slime monsters cannot be killed by smashing, puncturing, or cutting them. They can survive heavy physical trauma, and gouging pieces from them only causes them to lose mass or divide into multiple slimes. They must be destroyed on a cellular level, which can be accomplished via magic spells or advanced weaponry.
There seems to be no limit to how big a slime can grow. However, they slowly lose mass over time, and the bigger they get, the more food they require to maintain their mass. They also lose half of their mass each time they reproduce. Because of this, a slime's growth is limited by its access to food, so they tend to top out to a certain size in the wild rather than growing endlessly.
The world's largest recorded slime was as big as an elephant, and in fact, had just absorbed an entire elephant when it was discovered.
SUBSPECIES
5 subspecies of slime monster have been documented by the World Athenaeum. They can be visually identified by color, but each has other unique properties as well.
GREEN
Green slimes are believed to be the oldest and most common subspecies. Their mucus is very slippery, making them nearly impossible to pick up. They are not dangerous to humans or animals, but they are a scourge to farms and forests, as they have a ravenous appetite for plants. Curiously, these slimes only eat plantlife which is green. They ignore flowers, bark, or any part of the plant which is a differnt color. They appear to suck the life right out of plants, leaving them gray and withered after feeding upon them. They are usually found in shady wooded areas.
Green slimes are sometimes kept as pets or even zoo attractions, as they are hardy, easy to find in the wild, and even easier to care for. While they are loathed by gardeners, some people have capitalized on green slimes by making products out of their slippery mucus, such as hair gels, soaps, and lubricants.
BLUE
Their mucus is very sticky. They use this stickiness to anchor themselves tightly to surfaces and catch prey. While they're most commonly found in caves, blue slimes may also dwell in shady riparian areas. They feed on liquids, but not just any liquid will do. Blue slimes require balanced electrolytes to survive, meaning their best source of food comes from living creatures. They feed on sweat, saliva, urine, bile, or any other electrolyte-rich liquid that seeps from other organisms.
Some natural streams contain enough minerals to sustain blue slimes, as the water cascades over mountains and vegetation, collecting nutrients as it goes. This is why blue slimes like to colonize damp caverns in particular. These slimes can feed off of rocks and algae alone, although they will grow very slowly or not at all on this diet. To grow bigger, they must hunt living creatures and harvest their nutrients.
Blue slimes are opportunistic ambush-hunters. They are known to anchor their "feet" to the cieling and drop their "heads" down upon living prey, which becomes stuck in their sticky mucus. Larger prey may have the strength to escape their clutches, but blue slimes seem to be able to judge the size of their prey before they strike, and they rarely attack prey they can't handle. Small slimes only hunt small game like insects and rodents, but larger specimens can become a danger to peoples too.
Once a blue slime has ensnared its prey, it begins passively absorbing their liquids. Their prey struggles hopelessly, and the harder they struggle, the more they sweat, nourishing the slime. As time passes, they may even begin to cry or wet themselves, and the slime grows even stronger. Eventually they perish, surrendering their blood and all other liquid nutrients.
Once every last water molecule is extracted, the blue slime leaves behind a pile of dry bones, dessicated flesh, and any clothes or objects their prey may have been carrying. These grisly piles are a good indicator that large blue slimes could be lurking nearby, so explorers should exercise caution.
However, some people actually go looking for these creatures, as their sticky and dessicant properties are useful many applications.
RED
Red slimes are considered the most dangerous subspecies, as they actively seek out and attack living creatures--including peoples. They feed exclusively off of living flesh. Their mucus is highly corrosive, causing damage to most materials including fabric, plastic, wood, and even metal. This mucus is especially harmful to skin. Brief contact with this slime may cause mild burns, but the longer material stays in contact with it, the more damage it takes. Red slime mucus can completely dissolve human flesh in just a matter of minutes. Harder materials take more time to dissolve, but given long enough, it seems to be able to dissolve just about anything.
Only a few rare materials, such as pyriad skin and hair, are completely resistant to the red slimes' effects. Curiously, red elves also boast some resistance to it. Red slimes repel water and do not respond to boiling. Salt and flash-freezing can still kill them just as effectively as other subspecies. They are prey to some fire-breathing dragon species, who don't seem to suffer any negative effects from eating them.
Red slimes are thankfully not as common as the others, as their diets are more complex, they are prey to certain animals, and their scary reputation makes peoples are more eager to eradicate them when they're found. These slimes cannot survive on plants or minerals, so they only haunt areas where people and animals dwell. Wherever there are large concentrations of critters, such as vermin, there may also be red slimes lurking about. Abandoned buildings, livestock farms, and sewers seem to be the red slimes' favorite places.
Unlike blue slimes, which only attack prey they can handle, red slimes are much less discriminating. They are notorious for attacking creatures much larger than themselves. They may even divide themselves to launch a ranged attack, "spitting" their other half at prey from a distance. This of course costs the slime some mass, but it may also slow their prey down enough to be worth it.
Not only are they dangerous to animals and peoples, but these slimes can cause considerable damage to property as well. As they slop around an area, their mucus slowly corrodes everything it touches, and this is bad news if they happen to be near walls or foundations. Though these creatures are loathed worldwide, some brave souls actually farm them and use their byproducts to make things like industrial solvents.
AMBER
Also known as "gold" or "brown" slimes, amber slimes are often smelled long before they are seen. Their oily mucus emits a foul odor, and the bigger the slime grows, the stronger this odor gets. It's no wonder they smell so bad, for this subspecies feeds entirely on decaying matter, and they are not picky about what it is. Rotting vegetables, old manure, and even decaying corpses make a delicious feast for these creatures.
Amber slimes won't consume anything that's still fresh. They only move in once matter is in the moderate stages of rot. Their mucus is only faintly corrosive and not strong enough to break down fresh matter, but it can finish digesting matter which is already breaking down. This mucus is not harmful to people or animals unless it is ingested, and it is not harmful to all species. The foul stench of these slimes is actually pleasant to trolls and ogres, and their stomachs happen to be strong enough to eat them too. In some trollish and ogrish cultures, amber slime jelly is considered a delicacy.
Peoples worldwide have used these slimes to cheaply dispose of unwanted waste. However, this has been outlawed in most regions because unlike worms and fungi, amber slimes do not produce beneficial byproducts. Worms and fungus nourish the soil with their waste as they break down matter naturally, but amber slimes just add mass to themselves while giving nothing back to nature. Because of this, they are considered harmful to the environment.
Trolls and ogres are the only creatures known to eat amber slimes, and while they may be tasty to these species, they don't actually offer much nutrition. Amber slimes are illegally farmed for culinary purposes, but for the most part they are considered loathsome pests. They tend to congregate near dumpsters, compost piles, battlefields, or anywhere flies and other vermin congregate. Large amber slime colonies are often found in sewers, where their stench might go unnoticed for a long time. But domestic infestations are rare, as home and business owners quickly catch onto the rancid odor suddenly coming from the walls, where these slimes may try feeding on rotting wood or dead vermin.
PALE
Pale slimes are the most recent subspecies to be discovered. It's rumored that they were secretly developed by a divine working with the World Athenaeum, in an experiment to control other slimes. However, Athenaeum officials have not confirmed or denied this. Pale slimes first appeared in the Midland Jungle region, but over the years their numbers have grown and sightings have spread all over the world. They are found wherever other slimes are, for they are exclusively cannibalistic, feeding only on other slimes.
This subspecies has a colorless, transluscent appearance. Their mucus is described as "neutral", not particularly sticky or slippery. It does not have corrosive properties and it is copletely odorless. Pale slimes seek out and absorb other subspecies of slimes. When they absorb a smaller slime, they temporarily take on its properties until they finish digesting it, which may take hours to days. If the pale slime tries to absorb a slime that is larger than itself, it may take on its properties permanently, essentially transforming into another subspecies.
The Peoples Protection League has tried using pale slimes to control other slime infestions with mixed results. In some cases it has proven effective, but in other cases it only made the infestation worse. This subspecies is still quite new to the scientific community and research is still ongoing, so their full potential and abilities are not yet known.
TRIVIA
-The world's largest known slime monster was a red slime, discovered deep in the Midland Jungle. It was digesting an entire elephant when researchers stumbled upon it. This was considered a highly unusual specimen, as the largest slimes overall tend to be green and amber. Blue and red subspecies are more likely to stay on the smaller side due to their complex feeding habits.
-Hunting wild amber slimes to make jelly is legal worldwide, but farming amber slimes is illegal in all Great Kingdoms.
