a weekend getaway - sacramento, california

y'all - I am a born and raised Californian and I barely went to Sacramento on a personal trip to explore the city.. I've been on field trips to the State Capitol. I vaguely remember a train ride in Sacramento because we were there for a wedding. but as far as exploring the city - hasn't happened.

until.. November 2024 when I went for my birthday. thanks to a comedian that I wanted to see. but! I found that it was a cute city and I really enjoyed my trip.

so - here are 7 spots to check out in Sacramento!

okay, downtowns are usually not always the most popping place in a city. especially when work is over. however, they have some really great restaurants, the Crest theater (they have current acts come and also play old movies), there are bars and architectually cute.

midtown - midtown is the place to be. we were even told by some locals that midtown is the happening spot in Sacramento. midtown has a farmers market on the weekends, a lot of murals, coffee shops, restaurants, bars, shops and it's walkable. park your car, pay the fees and start exploring!

old town Sacramento is a touristy spot - but well worth it. it is a historical site where the buildings look like you're taking a step back in time to the wild west. it's really cool and unique to be in the city - especially the state capitol. there are shops, ice cream parlors, candy parlors, restaurants, indoor mini golf, museums, etc.

fyi - parking is kind of a bitch, but if you're lucky to find a spot in front one of the buildings, you're lucky. if not, there are parking garages nearby to park in (for a fee).

the waterfront is kind of part of old town Sacramento. it's the walk way along the river bed which is right next to old town. I recommend sitting and watching the sunset.

the tower bridge is an iconic Sacramento landmark. it's not a far walk from old town Sacramento. you can walk to the bridge, or admire it from a far along the river bank. you are allowed to walk across the bridge to the other side if you wish to take a little walk.

the California State Capitol Park is gorgeous. I recommend taking time to walk the park. there is a rose garden, memorials and the State Capitol. there were guides available for a walking tour of the park, but we ran out of time while we were there. I would have loved to have taken advantage of it to learn more about the different sights within the park.

within the park - stop at the State Capitol Park World Peace Garden. take your time to walk within the variety of roses. check out the names and the poems throughout. there are also benches to sit on and admire the beautiful roses. also.. do a little mini photo session - they're just too pretty to pass by!

there's not much to say about the California Vietnam memorial - it's heartbreaking to look at the names and ages of those we lost in the Vietnam war.

we stumbled across the California Firefighters Memorial while walking to the Capitol. again - not much to say, but a well put together memorial.

last but not least - the California State Capitol. regardless of who is in office, the building is historical and beautiful. we were there on a Sunday so we were not able to go in. however, from memory, the inside is also beautiful. take a few moments to admire the building while you're in Sacramento.
