befriend rats & kill god in a lush portal fantasy adventure by jenna moran
come on a journey with me?
there - past the scaffolding, past the rafters, up above past the windows and gables and fire escapes, if you make it to the roofs -
you'll encounter environments not of this world. rooftop gardens that have twisted themselves into dense forests, church spires that have , tiled expanses that stretch into the horizon and become meadows, gutter-lakes, deserts, mountains...
you'll encounter them, too, if you really look: the rats.
they want to show you these places, navigate them, map them, study them, know them. they want to befriend you, guide you, tell you their stories and weave new ones where you feature alongside them. if you want to make any headway, up there on the roofs, you'll need their help.
after all,
this is a place where the gods do tread. if they find you creeping about their domains, they will find you, kill you, transform you, dig their hooks into your very soul and never let go.
the rats know a secret.
gods can be killed.
you are the key.
the far roofs, currently crowdfunding, is home to some of the best role-playing game i've ever had. participating in several playtests has completely sold me on its viability as a system. notable are its set of unique oracle mechanics that tie into its freeform roleplay system, determining the physical and emotional outcomes of different events. gather hands of cards and tiles to weave together magic that can alter even monumental fates, fight peril with dice rolls, and collect components for spells and make headway on character advancement by spending time getting to know your companions, both human and murine.
it is, of course, written by dr. jenna moran, best known for previous innovative ttrpg experiences about divinity, such as nobilis, glitch, chuubo's marvelous wish-granting engine, and wisher, theurger, fatalist (WTF).
the philosophy of the far roofs is that dungeoneering is about the journey - the sights you see, the meals you make, the tales you tell, the companions you gain and lose - as much as the monster-slaying. each combat is a descriptive crescendo of the experiences faced up until that point, encompassing everything you've felt thus far. if any of this intrigues you, then, well... come on a journey with me?

PSA: There are no Dungeons in Dungeon Meshi! They're labyrinths!
(WARNING FOR MANGA SPOILERS)
Tumblr media
When the characters in the manga talk about dungeons, in Japanese they are actually using the word 迷宮 (meikyū) which means labyrinth. The connotation based on the kanji used is a palace or castle with many confusing rooms. The word “dungeon” (ダンジョン, danjon) is only every used in the manga’s title, when the narrator of the manga is referring to the title ("ahh Dungeon Meshi!"), or when Kui discusses dungoniums (ダンジョニウム/Danjoniumu) which she describes in the world guide as miniature dungeons, built to emulate a labyrinth.
The English loan word “dungeon” is most likely intended to catch Japanese reader’s eyes because it is foreign and exotic, and lead them into a false sense of security because of the Japanese pop culture perception of “dungeon” as a relatively harmless place where characters have formulaic adventures and gather resources as part of a game, or a game-like story.
“Dungeons” in Japanese pop culture can be sinister, but they have come to mean something as innocuous as “level” or “environment.” The early story of Dungeon Meshi is lighthearted and full of comedy, which reinforces this idea and leads readers to believe that the labyrinth in the story is just a generic backdrop with little inherent importance, like it is in many fantasy stories. However, Kui repeatedly suggests the labyrinth is not benign, that it is itself a monster and that anyone foolish enough to go into it is at risk of becoming food, and being devoured.
Before the word dungeon came to generically mean “place to exploit for resources” in fantasy fiction and gaming, its primary meaning was prison. So then the title “Dungeon Meshi” actually means “prison meal.” But who or what does the prison in Dungeon Meshi contain? Of all the people in the dungeon, who are the prisoners? And what does a “prison meal” really mean? A meal eaten by prisoners? A meal cooked by prisoners? A meal cooked using prisoners as ingredients? All of these meanings are implied and hinted at in the manga.
The characters in the story call the dungeon a labyrinth, which is a word that means a maze-like prison, specifically one that traps innocent young people and a man-eating monster inside. Both the monster and its food, the people, are prisoners… But which of them will die and be eaten? Who will escape the labyrinth in the end, and what will it cost them?
You’ll have to read Dungeon Meshi to find out!
======================
But so, you may ask, Mushroom, aside from all that stuff you just said, why does the dungeon/labyrinth distinction matter?
ARIADNE SPIDERS
Tumblr media
(Using the cute version here to protect anyone with arachnophobia)
These are giant spiders that the elves use to produce silk, which they use to make the armor the Canaries wear. Though we don’t know for sure, it’s likely the spiders are domesticated in order to make farming their silk easier.
Ariadne is the name of an Ancient Greek mythological character, and may be derived from the Ancient Cretan dialectical elements ari (ἀρι-) "most" (which is an intensive prefix) and adnós (ἀδνός) "holy", but the exact origins of the name are unknown. It may be pre-Greek and not from the Indo-European language family at all.
Ariadne was a princess of Crete that helped the hero Thesus escape from the maze/dungeon that contained the minotaur by giving Theseus a ball of magic thread.
The spiders in the manga have a pattern on their backs that looks like a maze, and their silk thread is the thing that protects the Canaries while they’re in the dungeon, and allows them to make it back out alive. The elves may consider the spiders “most holy” because they provide the means for them to protect themselves in battle.
Having the elves use a giant spider as a type of livestock might also be a playful reference to the drow (dark elves) of Dungeons & Dragons, since they worship a spider goddess, and Kui’s elves probably don’t worship the spiders if they’re using them as livestock… Though it’s also possible that they have a reverence for the spiders similar to the way cows are worshiped in parts of India, since some of elven culture appears to be based on South Asia!
THE CANARIES ARE BEING SACRIFICED TO THE DUNGEONS
Minos, Ariadne’s father, prayed to the God Poseidon to help him defeat his brothers and become king. He was sent a snow-white bull as a sign of the God’s favor. Minos was supposed to sacrifice the bull to Posiedon to show his gratitude, but because it was so beautiful Minos kept it, and sacrificed a different, inferior bull instead.
To punish Minos, Poseidon made Mino’s wife fall in love with the bull, which resulted in her mating with it and giving birth to a half-man, half-bull monster, a minotaur that could only survive by eating human flesh. King Minos constructed a labyrinth to hide the proof of his family’s shame and keep the minotaur trapped inside it.
In order to avoid war with King Minos, the people of Athens made a bargain, and every few years they sent 14 youths from their noble families to Minos as a sacrifice. These young men and women were sent into the labyrinth, where they became lost and trapped, and were eventually eaten by the minotaur. This continued until Ariadne fell in love with one of the Athenian youths, Theseus, and gave him a ball of magic thread which allowed him to kill the minotaur and escape the labyrinth.
There’s many ways this tale parallels the story of Dungeon Meshi. The ancients used the demon to accomplish their goals, and eventually their use of the demon’s power and their failure to control it led to them having to imprison the demon in a maze, and conceal its existence from the rest of the world. Now the elves, the descendants of the ancients, regularly “sacrifice” some of the children of their noble families to the dungeon, in an attempt to keep the demon from breaking free and destroying the world…

I know not everyone has read the Delicious in Dungeon World Guide: The Adventurer's Bible, but there's an interesting section I think even some folks who did missed when it comes specifically to Mithrun and what he can and cannot do in re: taking care of himself. Spoilers for the manga. (And obviously to each their own headcanon, but I'm just looking at what's in the canon text)
On p.73 of the Delicious in Dungeon World Guide: The Adventurer's Bible, there's this bit of text in Mithrun's character section, "Even though he has no desires, he still has routine habits, so he can handle everyday life on his own. However, when he's in a dungeon, he tends to neglect things like eating and sleeping." Nowhere in there does it say anything about him needing help to bathe or go to the bathroom. We know Cithis is assigned to look after him (so that he "doesn't collapse during missions." (p.82)). We know from Daydream Hour that he at least seemingly needed help to bathe while he was recovering. It's possible he's since gotten over this and can do it on his own (one targeted focus of Milsiril helping him was to get him to keep himself clean).
Another note is that while Cithis does kind of leave things vague when asking Kabru to "see to his needs" (p.144, Volume 9, Chapter 61), the only thing she specifically tells Kabru to do is make sure Mithrun eats. Kabru is the one who takes it a lot farther. And while, yes, carrying Mithrun to safety and making sure he rests properly is a lot more than feeding him, it's also not "make sure he goes to the bathroom regularly". You could argue Cithis was just being delicate or they didn't have time... But still. Cithis didn't say this. She just says, "Until we do, we'd like you to see to his needs. Food in particular! Three meals a day. If you feed him properly... ...we'll overlook this incident." And this matches what the Adventurer's Bible says. In the Cithis comic in the Adventurer's Bible, the only things we see Cithis telling Mithrun to do are: eat, sleep, and switch out his clothes. While the clothes thing is kind of a question mark (and probably a joke), again: the only things we really see him having an issue/getting help with are really eating and sleeping properly. Principally, while it's clear he does need more help than just someone to feed him... the things we see Kabru do are adjacent to his eating and sleeping properly. Mithrun doesn't register a need to rest or eat, so he doesn't sleep or ask for food until he collapses. He's unable to sleep without aid (and a foot massage, to my knowledge, does not solve "uncomfortable but ignored need to go the bathroom"). And he generally tends to overuse his magic until he collapses. He doesn't like... collapse because he just forgot to go to the bathroom for too long. Nor does Kabru seemingly indicate that he smells. The one time he noticeably has an issue bathing is with the mushrooms, and Kabru seems to be going to the next level with making Mithrun's hair glossy, which implies maybe Kabru's either getting Mithrun better shampoo or cleaning and/or brushing Mithrun's hair himself. But outside the mushrooms it's not clear Mithrun needs the help bathing, and the difference might be because his body has changed completely due to the mushrooms.
Additionally, what does Cithis say when Mithrun is using his magic a lot on floor one: "We'll have to make sure Captain Mithrun eats soon. Once we're finished here, let's get some food in town." (p.146, Volume 8, Chapter 55). Again... all roads lead back to: he forgets to eat and sleep properly at least some of the time, and his comrades have to keep an eye on him for that. But that seems to kind of be it.
Where I think folks might be getting confused is in trusting Kabru's estimation of things a bit too much, and I do understand why. After all, he's the massage feet guy! He kept them alive (with Mithrun's help)! He helped Mithrun choose to live on! He knows his stuff!
...But that doesn't mean that Kabru is always right. In fact, he's not right a number of times in the manga (e.g., when he's describing Past!Mithrun in the Adventurer's Bible, or when he's trying to convince Laios to wait without explaining what happened to Marcille).
But let's start at the beginning: the one set of panels where it's left sort of open-ended whether or not Mithrun needs help to remember to go to the bathroom:
Tumblr media
(I personally imagine Mithrun just going along with it in the end might be due to the fact he's exhausted to the point of collapse, and just generally goes along with what other people want in these situations so long as it doesn't endanger his mission, such as with Cithis and Fleki)
I just think it's interesting it never seems to come up anywhere else that I'm aware of (even Daydream Hour doesn't show the caretakers going to that level of care, though I imagine he would at least need help getting out of his bonds to go to the bathroom), nor do we see how this specific scenario - Kabru literally dragging Mithrun out of bed to go to the bathroom while Mithrun protests he's doesn't need to go - turned out. The scene literally fades to black while they're running; not that I'd expect Kui to draw Mithrun doing his business or Kabru forcefully encouraging him to, but it does still leave it more open-ended than clear-cut. You could argue that because bathroom stuff grosses people out a lot, bringing it up once twice and solely for a gag works, but also only showing this much and not bringing it up again makes sense as well, so the fact that it isn't clear-cut + isn't brought up again doesn't necessarily mean that Kabru was wrong in his belief that Mithrun needed this help, so much as it's practical storytelling... Also Kui literally has a whole comic about Laios' poop creating forests from makeshift toilets, this manga is not above literal toilet humor.
But also it still leaves open the idea that Kabru was wrong. Because while Kabru is often right about things, he isn't right all the time (especially when he panics). And one of the notable times he was panicking about something, Mithrun was the one who slapped him to his senses.
Tumblr media
(I mean part of it was probably revenge for Kabru knocking him out at Sissel's home earlier but the point still stands). This isn't even the first time Mithrun calls out Kabru's wild imagination: it's technically the second/third.
Also as astroloquacious pointed out in the notes: Kabru's role model for caretaking was Milsiril, who was notably overbearing. Specifically before he is thrust into working with and then looking after Mithrun, he recalls a memory of Milsiril being overbearing in her caretaking of Kabru, and how he would rather stay in Merini with its dangers than return to that life. He probably internalized some of the stuff he disliked about her. And if Milsiril, who is a lot older than Kabru, can get stuff wrong about his needs, then who's to say that Kabru doesn't get stuff wrong about Mithrun's needs?
tldr; Believe what you want about this aspect of Mithrun's lifestyle. Not showing a thing doesn't make a heavily implied thing untrue. But I think the Adventurer's Bible is pretty clear. Also, according to the complete Adventurer's Bible, it seems Pattadol is still helping him a little post-Merini, and he's clearly not averse to having a helper (e.g., Fleki). I just don't think it's necessarily factual that Kabru is right in that Mithrun needs this level of care/attention in this particular area, particularly outside a dungeon.

Some notes:
I put the whole series in (and i feel pretty guilty about it, please support official sources) so you can actually do a reread of Dungeon Meshi in chronological order (I think that's the right word idk)
The translations of the manga and extra material pages are mostly English but the titles, appendix, table of contents and some litlle notes by me are all in Vietnamese (it seems back then I think of only sharing it with VN fandom, and I don't think I would want to translate them to English anytime soon)
The translations are from various sources (official, EHScan, Savaralyn and wibunomanland (Vietnamese), etc...)
There are 14 docs in total (I originally thought there would be like 3 or 4 but putting the whole series in didn't turn out so well)
Beside timeline-ing, I also tried to put the callbacks, flashbacks together whenever they appears
There's multiple little errors now that I look back, but I hope you can work it out with the context (my hyperfixation dwindled I'm sorry)
This thing started simply because I wanted to have just the Kabru Mithrun 6 days adventure right next to Laios's party adventure (visually cause I somehow couldn't really wrap my head around it) and then the timeline that Kui-sensei laid out carefully down to the days and meals that Laios party had in the Dungeon made me really want to put it down somehow, so that happened
And a photo for funsies (do you know that different covers with different fonts can give you more details of the backgrounds, why did Kui have to be so hardcore and do both the characters and the backgrounds anyway, hopefully we get an artbook someday so I can see Mithrun and the Canaries hidden behind Laios' ass in Volume 14's cover).

Dungeon Meshi Adventurer's Bible Characters Part 1
Laios, Marcille, and Chilchuck
Laios
Honestly, there isn't a huge amount of new details on him. Makes sense since he's the protagonist.
One detail I was able to notice in the Complete version is birthdays are included next to age. Laios was born November 26.
I fully agree with his stat chart.
Tumblr media
I especially agree with the Intelligence stat. Laios is smart. He's shown a great amount of problem solving, quick thinking, and ability to adapt throughout the series. He's just not good at explaining his thought process and prefers to keep things simple.
I did mention in chapter 57 that Laios looked kind of like his father and he actually keeps his hair short to not look like him. The section on family also mentioned Falin could hear the voices of the dead. Laios probably had the same talent as she did. The flashback in chapter 26 was from his perspective, and Laios understood the ghost just fine. But Falin was the one who told everyone what the ghost was saying so she was the only one persecuted for her magic ability and sent to the magic academy.
The monster research section says there's a particular researcher Laios respects because of his unfounded, wild theories. I'd like to know what they are and if he has anything to do with the Gourmet Guide. I'm also curios if Laios's adventures provided supporting evidence to any of those theories. This researcher would probably go wild if Laios tells them about Living Armor.
Laios was still a little baby when he left home. He was 12. He should have been going to the playground. And I was under the impression that he dropped out of school. He was in the army for three years.
Most of the other's thoughts on Laios are negative-leaning with Kabru's being a neutral observation and Senshi and Falin being positive. In the Complete edition, the Winged Lion also has thoughts on him
Tumblr media
Something about how Laios wants to be friends with Shuro because he's foreign.
Laios's maxims are "Before long, I started wondering how they'd taste", "We, who ate three proper meals a day and got our sleep, have been much more serious about this than you are!!", and "I'm finally prepared. I'm ready to steal and be stolen from." I'd summarize them as "Be curious, be prepared, and be willing to accept what happens."
The Laios comic looks like it was a rough sketch when it was added. If I had to guess when it was made, I'd guess it was made before the series began or a short way into it.
I think Laios would get really mad if someone pointed out that this description of his father could apply to him with a few word swaps.
Tumblr media
Laios also isn't very talkative to people he's not interested as seen with Kabru's inability to ever speak to him. Laios also doesn't have any hobbies to speak of. He's an adventurer and likes doing that. His father's decree that hunters have to give him a new pup is probably his way of tying his responsibility to govern into his interest in hunting. He was interested in breeding hunting dogs so he made a decree that promoted that interest. It's like how King Laios supported research into using magic and monsters for food production.
I bet Falin also named their cat Meowpi.
I'm not finding any real-world references to Nussa and Anoutolid as mythological figures, so that story Marcille told Laios is an in-universe mythos. I'm curious if this is a North Continental myth or if it's generally known around the world.
Tumblr media
Marcille's imagining of the myth makes Nussa look like her.
Laios and his father actually are quite alike. His dad would probably light up the exact same way Laios does with monsters if you asked him about hunting.
Marcille
So Donato isn't her father's first name, it's her family name. Marcille is also from the Northern Continent, hence why she and Laios have the same tradition about what to do with baby teeth. Her birthday is April 19. Marcille mentioned several ways to eat cephalopods and she likes seafood so she must have lived in a coastal region.
My final guess on her age was between 45 and 75 and the correct answer is 50. Yeah, she's a little kid by elf standards. I said Laios should have been going to the playground when he left home. Marcille should be at the playground right now. No wonder her half-foot form looked like a child. And this might imply ogres physically mature very early.
And while she is presumably smarter than an elf her age would usually be, she still has a lot of the mentality of the child she would be if she aged normally. The tantrums she throws at times, her inability to cope with death, and her obsession with romantic novels could all be extensions of how at heart she's a child who literally grew up too soon and doesn't yet have the skill to understand and handle her emotions. But she's expected to act like an adult because she looks like one.
Again, stats make perfect sense.
Tumblr media
Marcille's father was 32 when he married her mother. He fell in love with her because he's a history nerd and she could give a lot of first-hand accounts of things. What if he influenced her interest in ancient magic to a degree? Maybe he wanted to know about the ancient civilizations and the origin of ancient magic and it rubbed off on her.
Ambrosia's description casually drops so many major bombshells about the world. What do you mean there's a "world tree"? What do you mean there are second generation clones of it? And Ambrosia is made from its root? Is the tree in the middle of the kingdom in chapter 87 a world tree? Is Marcille's dungeon house when she became the lord based on it?
Marcille's biography doesn't say when her father died, but she enrolled in the academy when she was 35 so he was at least 47 when she was conceived. Laios left home one year before Falin went to the academy and one year after Marcille joined the academy so she would have been a third year and met Falin shortly after Falin started school.
The overall opinion on Marcille seems to be generally neutral. I don't know if Senshi's comment is a literal observation or if he's saying she has a big ego. In the complete edition, the winged lion also had something to say about Marcille.
Tumblr media
Marcille's maxims are "Because, I mean...the poor dog...", "Did you give even a moment's thought to how I'd feel surrounded by your corpses...?", and "Do not use people as pickling weights." I think these statements sum up to "Don't take life for granted, neither yours or others."
The Marcille comic's art style makes me think it was probably made somewhere around a third of the way through the series.
The Marcille comic is all about her trying to fit into the party after what happened with their last mage. I can understand why the others gave her a cold reception. They had just dealt with a woman trying to cozy up to Laios and he replaces her with a cute girl he just met.
Marcille called Chilchuck a "little boy". She didn't know what a half-foot was before meeting him.
She ended up being the heart that kept them all together, and it was because she wanted to know all the juicy gossip and drama within the party. My favorite speculation of hers was the one about Chilchuck being Namari's childhood friend who he has a one-sided love for but she's instead interested in Shuro.
Marcille also would be a third wheel whenever Shuro tried to be with Falin. But Marcille would have been malicious when she did it.
Tumblr media
Chilchuck
Chilchuck's general summary says he knows multiple languages and can act as an interpreter. That could have been an interesting thing to see. Like when the Canaries are interrogating them, there could have been a scene where they start speaking elfish and Chilchuck tells Laios and Senshi what they're saying.
His birthday is May 18.
I think Chilchuck's int should be a 4.
Tumblr media
The half-foot from the gold peelers who introduced Chilchuck is Dandan. It mentioned Dandan was part of the guild Chilchuck runs, so Dandan effectively recommended his boss to the party.
Chilchuck has to keep his weight down because he's tall for a half-foot huh? That explains why we was so scrawny when he turned into a Tall-man.
Chilchuck's wife is a childhood friend his age. So I guess that one shot in the title cover of chapter 52 was their families sharing a meal together and that was her holding the dragon doll.
Chilchuck was 13 when he got married and had his first two daughters. Something tells me it may have been a shotgun wedding.
Everyone's opinion on Chilchuck is generally positive.
Tumblr media
Chilchuck's maxims are "In this world, the people who say they don't need anything in return are the ones you should trust the least", "I don't want to lose you guys", and "Thi...this year, I'm twenty-nine." I would sum it up as "Be professional. Be upfront about what you need. And be respectful to the people you work with."
Chilchuck's first comic was definitely made later in the series, but the second was made very early in.
We get to finally see his kids.
Tumblr media
I'm gonna guess Flertom takes most after their mother. Meijack has the same hairstyle Chilchuck gave Marcille.
Their career paths are handiwoman, gold-digger, and hustler respectively.
I know Marcille has an item pouch but I didn't know it was the same one that Chilchuck has. That's fun trivia.

Dungeoneer's Guide to Monstrous Races
Chapter 2: Gnolls Now I must admit, dear readers, that I am biased here. Gnolls are a particular fascination of mine, and though I seek to omit any biases from these entries, my inherent glee in their existence may peek through every once in a while. Gnolls are a tall (7 ft average) bipedal/quadrupedal species closely related to awakened hyenas. Typically each gnoll is as strong as two standard humans, though much less creative. They are brutish, crude, and throw fantastic parties. As long as you don't mind the ensuing orgy and possible cannibalism.
Gnoll packs are typically found to the south of great deserts upon the savannas and plains of the world. Unlike goblins, gnoll birth genders are more statistically distributed, including intersex members.
Aside from the inherent danger in having a 7 foot tall hyena-man that can punch through a tree trunk, every gnoll is capable of SOME basic magic. Though most cannot cast spells, they each have the aptitude to craft HEXES and CHARMS. Adventuring Guilds usually attempt to clear out gnoll nests before they can become too entrenched, as after a few months the areas they inhabit are so full of minor negative effects that any who set foot in them become almost immediately lost, ensnared, and used for sport.
Gnolls are a playful people, for the most part. They take great delight in games and napping, as well as the eating of "fine meals". Oftentimes they trade with lizardmen who dwell in swamps nearby for various kinds of meats to use, as both species are carnivorous by nature.
Gnolls revere the natural world to a fetishistic degree. They willingly allow themselves to be charmed by Fey creatures, as they share a delight for games and recreation (as well as being fantastic in the art of bestial lovemaking which some Fey enjoy).
It is recommended that no less than 3 rank 2 adventurers attempt to kill a gnoll, for as soon as you kill one you will have to contend with the rest of the pack. They are fiercely loyal to one another, and do not forgive ANY grievance, no matter how slight. Fortunately, they take payment immediately and in kind, meaning that they will usually take one of the adventurers as recompense for the packmate they lost.
Being captured by a gnoll clan is not a pleasant experience, by any stretch of the imagination, and usually involves several months of unintentional psychological warfare. The HEXES they frequently make for fun (which do not affect them) turns the mind to mush and the legs to jelly, until all you can do is beg for more. Eventually this culminates in the unfortunate begging to be turned into a gnoll themselves, thus gaining the pack a new and powerful member. It is recommended that, should a party member need to be sacrificed, the order of operation is thus:
Elves first, then the healer, then the tank, then the mage. Under no circumstances should a Necromancer be allowed to be captured by a gnoll pack.
Ah, I have digressed. The social structure of a gnoll pack is a loose hierarchy wherein the most magically gifted typically "rule". The Gnoll Shaman advises the Gnoll Pack Leader (who may very well be MORE powerful than the Shaman themselves). There is also usually a roughshod council of sorts, consisting of the "best" gnolls in the tribe. I have my own names for these roles, but to use gnoll terminology: The Big, The Bad, and The Soft. Hilarious, I know.
"The Big" refers to the largest, most physically powerful gnoll in the pack. A Gnoll Big can typically take 5 human foot soldiers in combat.
"The Bad" refers to the most playful member of the pack. Likely a trickster, this one is always getting into trouble and making a mess of things. Their input is usually used to decide what NOT to do.
"The Soft" is the most dangerous of the three. Gifted in black alchemy and trained by both the Pack Leader and the Shaman, the Gnoll Soft is both the stealthiest and the most cunning of the group. A Gnoll Soft is almost always a female rogue adventurer who has been turned, though sometimes a normal gnoll can manifest these tendencies as well.

Dungeon Delicacies
Dungeon Meshi / Delicious in Dungeon Fan Song
:: LYRICS ::
Step into the dungeon, where the crew's on a mission Laios the tall man, devourin' up some fiction Marcille the elf, spellcasting with precision Senshi the dwarf, cookin' up a culinary vision Chilchuck the half-foot, dodgin' traps, no collision
In this twisted realm, we feast on more than just glory Crawling through the darkness, our hunger never bore me Poppin' open chests, searching for treasure, no worry But what we really crave? The taste of dungeon's story Cookin' up monsters, our palates never get gory
Dungeon delicacies, that's our appetite Feastin' on the unknown, we got a brand-new plight From goblins to dragons, we take a big bite Dungeon meshi, baby, it's a culinary delight
Deeper into darkness, where the echoes start to wane Laios tastes adventure with every monster slain Marcille weaves her spells, turning shadows into bane Senshi stirs the cauldron, his expertise plain Chilchuck dances through traps, his moves like a refrain
In the heart of the dungeon, where the air is thick with fear Laios carves a path, his appetite sincere Marcille chants softly, making danger disappear Senshi adds his flair, making meals to endear Chilchuck finds the way out, with secrets ever clear
Dungeon delicacies, our hunger guides the way Dungeon meshi, we're here to slay and cook another day Marching through the maze, in the pale torchlight In this dungeon kitchen, every meal’s a fight

#Househuntedgame#DungeonMeshi#WhatIfYouCouldEatAREALTORs #MyThoughts
Also I bet if you Dungeon Meshi cook a REALTORs it would be awkward but I imagine the lure body tasting like vegan meat mixed with corn.
I think the lure cord would be the vegan meat part while the plant flesh skin with the clothes would taste like greens if you boiled them and just cut up the inside of the fleshy part of the house to eat.
Maybe use the other house body parts like plates or bowls since they are snail shell like.
Maybe use the snail shell house body or the tree bones like cooking utensils like wooden spoons or other silverware.
Maybe have the business cards taste fruit sweet if it's a seed bearing one or bitter like if it's a pollinator one.
Maybe have to wait for the enzymes to dissipate after you kill the REALTORs then start cooking them.
You can't eat the manmade stuff the REALTORs bring in but anything fleshy might be edible but might have dangerous parts you can't eat but that's me guessing.
Now I want a fanart of the Dungeon Meshi gang meeting a REALTORs and Laois knowing that this person isn't human while wanting to eat them before this creature eats the party.
I can see a REALTORs making house eating puns and Laois saying he's hungry too.
Maybe have him follow a REALTORs lure body to the house body thinking the person was nice enough to cook him a meal in their house while his party tries to stop him.
But it was Laois plan to follow the creature to their house body to kill both parts of the creature to cook up to eat.
I wonder how people in the Dungeon Meshi series buy houses?
Like do real realtor's exsits in their world?
That's wild the if you type Househuntedgame and Maison Talo in the search you are just saying Househuntedgame House House.
Image not mine but link is there.

middle of my d&d campaign update:
playing a sentient skeleton in search of my missing band T-shirt who is, in the meantime, working for an adventuring guild with an old man and two women who share a single braincell. we guided a caravan half way up a mountain just to lose all of the cargo thanks to one of the drivers who sold us out and almost got us killed. we wrangled him and made it the rest of the way, threw him in a dungeon, nursed him back to health because he was apparently poisoned the whole time???, and then the brat had the nerve to charm me into liking him by admitting "it's all about the money" with a smile on his face while on the edge of death. well what's an old bag of bones to do but bring him a hot meal and promise a hefty payout if he changes his tune and stops fucking us over

Me: I read/watch Delicious in Dungeon for The Plot The Plot (spoilers for S1E16: Cleaners/Dried with Sweet Sake and the manga, Chapter 31: Sea Serpent, Part 1):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Never escaping from the crotch indeed lakjdladj
Tumblr media
I also really love this fond look Marcille has for Laios and his excitement/him appreciating her genius/making use of the dungeon/whatever. It's really sweet. Chilchuck is tired and doesn't like being nearly drowned in a wall by a handsy elf.
Tumblr media
Laios is so adorable when he's happy like this. Poor Senshi lol
Finally we get the first true Labru episode, my beloved.
Tumblr media
Just shocked to see this mess of an adventurer. Kabru thoughts: Oh no he's hot. (yes I know he's not the one talking here, it just looks funny)
Tumblr media
Kabru is so good-looking this episode, I took so many screencaps of him. He just looks so amazing in the anime. I love it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Putting on smooth talker mode. Love him. Gotta flirt with the blonde tall-man for intel. I blame this whole arc for making me think Kabru is short; he's not short, Laios is just taller lol (Laios is 6'1"/185 cm tall, Kabru is 5'7"/170 cm tall). Or at least Kabru is still fitting the tall-man name and a lot taller than most other races, like the elves, just not as much as Laios is. (And for the curious: Toshiro is 5'11"/180 cm tall, so even he's shorter than Laios). I think between Toshiro, Laios, and Inutade (a 6'5"/195 cm ogre), I just had a weird impression of Kabru's height. (All heights from Delicious in Dungeon World Guide: The Adventurer's Bible)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kabru being dangerous and also cute still. I just... I have too many screencaps of him alkdjalj Beautiful man.
Tumblr media
Toshiro is a saint for tolerating this man. But they are cute together.
Tumblr media
Kabru and Laios kill me T-T I wanted to fic for them ever since Kabru first showed up in the manga cause he was really cute and I wanted more of him and he seemed fucky enough that he would be fun to fic for, especially with the sort of enemies to lovers vibes of his party chasing Laios' party for revenge.
And then there's this chapter cover lol (this is actually two episodes ago story-wise, but it feels more relevant here):
Tumblr media
And I was screaming in joy XD Particularly after we got to Kabru's obsession/curiosity about Laios in particular. I was putting off ficcing for them in case they actually met and yup, they did lol I still have a lot of ideas for fics for them. Maybe someday.
Tumblr media
This man is having the time of his life with this nonsense and I love it roflmao He was like "they're either evil masterminds or stupid" and it's kind of the latter and mostly just "they're weird and it's funny" lol
Tumblr media
I know he's faking so hard but it's still cute lol (Especially cause Laios offered to treat him to a meal, like hello, Labru date????) One thing I love about them as a pairing is their weirdness interacts in fun ways and it is hilarious.
Tumblr media
This man is here for this absolute train wreck and I could not be happier for him. And them. Look at that little blush. Bless him.
Truly a phenomenal episode. It's also interesting seeing how... disrespectful, shall we say, to be polite, just about every character is to each other. You've got Chilchuck insulting Marcille for getting incapacitated, Marcille shoving Chilchuck into a wall to nearly drown without explanation, Toshiro's retainers - particularly Maizuru - being patronizing to all the non-tall-men (and any outsiders, really, considering at least what Maizuru thinks of Falin), Laios being... disrespectful to Toshiro with his name, and Kabru lying his ass off to get the deets on what the heck is going on and essentially being the human embodiment of -grabs popcorn-. It's a lot of really interesting character, social, and political dynamics. Everyone's a mess and I love it. I'm late cause of various nonsense with me misreading something and thinking they skipped a week and being busy but ahhhh such delicious food to catch up on. So good.
Other delicious Plot:
Season 1: Episode 3, Episode 7, Episode 9, Episode 11, Episode 13, Episode 14, Episode 15, Episode 16 (you are here), Episode 17, Episode 18, Episode 20, Episode 21, Episode 24

“Now I have an idea how you can capitalize on this problem you have. Plenty of adventures come through right? A nod. “And ever so many years someone new takes up one of the pre-dug dungeons or creates a new one?” Another nod. “Why not charge the adventures a fee. Make it a guided tour, they pay for your time and you in turn show them around, explain what they might face. If you wanted to add a bit of spice you could employ some of the lads, have them dress like monsters, give the adventures trick weapons so they can’t hurt the towns folk. Then you can pay the actors for their time out of the collected fees, the adventures walk out with bragging right, and their lives. Throw some crap into a chest at the end so they feel like they’ve earned a prize.”
Those who’d gathered while he spoke like the idea. “We could market it, a dungeon for every adventure. Get a taste for dungeon diving in the beginner levels. Been around a while test your skill on the more advanced dungeon.”
“I’d call it something other than a dungeon dive.”
“What about a dungeon crawl?” Someone offered. “Don’t want to confuse people of course. This isn’t for real.”
That would work. “But it would let those inexperienced to learn a thing or two, in a safe environment. Plus you could make money off it, and keep the real villains out.”
The guards rubbed his chin with his metal mitten. “You know, that’s a hell of an idea. It’ll take some work and a way to get things going but… I think it might just solve a lot of our problems. We could change things depending on the season, keep things fresh with new monsters. Hell we might be able to save our village with this.”
Scáth agreed. “People would come from all over, wanting to have a bit of a thrill, without the risk, the inn would house them the shops would offer them supplies they’d need, you just have to be sure they don’t bring real weapons in.”
“There are some dangerous things in the forest, we could bring in a few of them, have the party kill them off and then show them the chest which has magic weapons in it, but they’ll only work here.” He shrugged. “We’ll get to work. Plan to stick around a bit?”
“Only long enough to relax a bit more and give my horse a chance to rest.” He vowed before sitting back to enjoy the remainders of his meal.

Mucha and Pin are in the dungeon to dissect every monster, document their anatomy, and eat them. That and they're after immortality. Mu can eat practically anything and Pin is making sacrifices for science finding out what's edible. Mu is instead taking distressing amounts of risk to observe the monster's behavior.
BTW yes I have a chip on my shoulder about the fact that Laios blindly trusts that everything in this dungeon is edible and is proven correct.
Jack would very much like them to please not do this but failing that is trying to protect them both in combat and by having a stomach that's hardier than Pin's.
Bunjamin came here with the Dungeon Gourmet's Guide and is now writing The Real Dungeon Gourmet's Guide.
Nick has like Chilchuck's level of hesitant but ultimately will eat anything Buns feeds him. Passionate about revenge-eating anything that lands a hit on them or is a pest.
Jupiter is absolutely aghast at the uncivilized monster-eating practices. The others' argument that he's a dragon and out of everyone here he's the one who should have this kind of diet finds limited success.
Canary would not have come up with the idea of eating monster's but after witnessing Jupiter or Marcille's disgust is now torn between wanting to tear into everything raw then seeing what it does to her, and just indulging in the best of Buns' cooking. The former is controversial since she's by far the best healer in the party.
Hunter is trying to get in touch with how the monsters live to figure out what is the proper place of adventurers in the food chain. Everybody is a little nervous about what he's going to do about other adventuring parties once he identifies the Natural Predator of Adventurers. He's having philosophical debates with Buns and Canary about whether it is morally proper to cook meals and in what way. Mu is annoyed at his tendency to stealthily kill everything ahead of them before she can see anything.
if you have more than one oc, you can list each in the tags or just pick one for this poll. if you want you can also go more in depth about their reasoning in the tags, i’m just curious
