While Alaska sometimes wondered how things could have gone with Joel, she does not regret marrying Ben, her partner through thick and thin, who always put a smile on her face. He gave her his unconditional love and support which she reciprocated. Her choices gave her a successful career and Ben gave her a happy family, a safe haven she could always return to.

THTH Season 2 Thoughts

Okay, it's been a while since I put together a thoughts post on THTH2, but I think one is warranted.

Anyone who likes LITG and hasn't played this yet needs to get on it. There's only 4 episodes left, so a 1-month Netflix subscription will be enough to play the whole thing, if you were waiting till it was almost done to play.

But... you might want to wait a bit longer till it's out in full, because you'll probably want to replay it - multiple times. The branching this season is SO much better than last season, like I literally just replayed a bunch of times trying to get onto a specific route. I'm thoroughly impressed. I had low expectations going in and was just hoping it wouldn't be as linear as Season 1, but Season 2 has blown me away.

There are only 4 OG LIs (compared to 7 last season), and I know a lot of people were annoyed at that, especially because the friend options are hotter (oh Santiago, what could have been), but it makes sense as there's more non-MC related storyline. And there are 4 bombshells, and at least 3 of them are LIs as well (not sure about the 4th yet because they come in next week but I have a feeling they will be).

As for the LIs, they're all great. Even if you don't like their looks, the personalities are so much more developed than S1 or the last few seasons of LITG. You get unique dialogue with every LI in just about every scene you get with them, you get to go on dates, you get to have intimate scenes (that are also unique from what I've been able to tell!!). You can even choose various interests for your MC and if they match up with a character, you get extra dialogue. The game is so replayable!

It also remembers your choices, so if you flirt with someone and then go for someone else, you'll get reactions from them. And your consequences can have actions! They may forgive you, but they may not.

I mentioned the branching, but once again, it's amazing. You're not forced into love triangles, but you can be messy af and date 3 people at once (just be careful, they might find out 🤭😏). The loyal routes are sooo good, there's a little drama on them that doesn't entirely make sense but the whole time, your LI is all for you. But if you're not loyal, those scenes can change! People will call you out for treating people wrong, or they might come asking you to give them another chance. You can break rules or keep them, and people will trust you accordingly. You can make a relationship official. There's probably an 'I love you' coming at some point, I'd think.

Oh, and there's no twin sister Amelia 🤭

Basically, it's got a lot of the things we've been asking for from Love Island, it's just a different reality show.

Oh, and there are no gem options or in-app purchases, just your monthly Netflix subscription. And when you replay, you can choose any episode to go back to, and there's a skip feature to skip to the next dialogue option or scene.

So if you can afford one month of Netflix, I definitely recommend giving it a try.

On "The Deep Sky"

I read The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei this past week. It's a sci-fi thriller about an 80 person crew sent from a changing Earth to colonize a far-off Planet X. The thriller aspect of the novel is that a bombs goes off on the ship, pulling them off course, and killing three people. Asuka, our main character, is the one who must discover who did it.

I'm not going to spoil the main plot but I do want to look at Kitasei's use of advanced technology in her story. So, spoilers for that.

We don't get an exact date of when this mission takes place but based on character ages we can surmise that this story takes place in a range of 2050-2090, give or take. The main piece of technology used in the story is DAR, an augmented reality device that starts as glasses/goggles that eventually evolves into a head implant. (Which was really fucking on the nose, probably on purpose, but still.)

I want to focus in on this DAR because currently, in modern life, tech giants are hard at work developing these exact machines for regular human use. A wide range of companies develop VR headsets, namely Meta and Google. Meta has even worked with RayBan to put that tech into glasses. Musk (the fascist dickbag) has Neuralink brain chips, which have begun limited human trials but did kill the monkey subjects. Now, at this time, the headsets are intended as immersive video game devices but the development on the RayBan glasses is an effort to incorporate VR into people's everyday lives. For certain people, this can be a benefit because it can be used as an assistive device.

So, Kitasei has taken a look at the tech we have currently and then speculated a future where this tech is common. This future Earth is ravaged by the effects of climate change: natural disasters are common, many species are dying out, and resources are finite. The children who inherit this Earth were raised with DAR, and they can customize what they see. Our main character Asuka loves birds so her DAR has plenty of augmented birds, some endangered, many extinct, that she incorporates into her display. She must pay for them, of course. Resources being scarce, your common person can't afford beautiful clothes so they just use DAR to make their shirt cooler, cleaner, and trendy. Only other people with DAR can see it though. Oh, and they can make their faces look different with DAR, quite like certain popular apps of today. These children can make the seasons seem more normal by appearance, they can create virtual safe havens from the world when it gets too scary, be who they wish they were in appearance only. They can deny reality. And I can't blame them.

The characters inherit a world that is becoming actively hostile to human existence. The domino was tipped long before they were born and unfortunately, they were born at the point when many people believe it can't be walked back. Because of that, they will at least make their final years, or decades of they're lucky, comfortable by using DAR. They can see parts of the world covered in water as they were, they can design beautiful things for their friends to use in their DAR, and it also operates akin to a phone so they can connect with loved ones. If I was in that generations shoes, with that environmental disaster, I would probably use DAR too just to make living just a little less bleak.

But here's the problem, everyone is collectively so focused on making their lives a little less bleak that not enough energy is being put toward solving their problem. If everyone put that energy toward a solution, that may not be perfect, then they can slow down the clock on their own eventual demise. And if they do that enough, keep it going generation after generation, then they might be able to reverse their environmental collapse. They need to look at their reality and choose to do something.

And this is what I love about sci-fi. It can be set in a galaxy far, far away, or a future generation decades from now, but the story about them is always really about us.

We have the chance right now to do something about climate change. Yes, the fallout is fucking terrifying and it feels impossible to make any impact as one individual person. But that's why we need to work as a collective. All of us need to pull our heads out of the sand and work together. Together we can move our governments to regulate the corporations responsible for majority of the pollution, and we can because we've done it before. In the 1970s, the people led by C. C. Patterson convinced the American government to regulate commercial lead usage in gas, toys, and paint. This lead to regulations for lead in food and water later on. It was a hard fight, the corporations did their best to discredit Patterson, but he won in the end. And now the entire American populace is less at risk for lead poisoning, and it benefits our wildlife too. It's possible.

We have to believe that it's possible and fight for the reality we and our future generations deserve.

One BILLION Dollars

Working five days a week, 7.5 to 8 hours each day, and commuting a total of two hours is an exhausting cycle most people find themselves trapped in. Is it any wonder we all wish to strike it lucky and escape the rat race? I know I certainly do. Saddled with a mortgage and looking to eventually move out, the idea of being able to freely do whatever I want with all the time in the world, without the threat of ending up destitute hanging over me like the Sword of Damocles is a very appealing idea.

But I wouldn't need a billion dollars to be comfortable. No. At most it would be a lump sum of five million that would see me cruise through the rest of my life. Especially if I choose to continue working part-time, or use the my freed up obligations to become a full-time author. Throw in a few lavish overseas holidays and I would be golden.

And yet the hypothetical still reamins.

If I had a billion dollars at my disposal, what would I use it for? It is, after all, a ridiculous amount of money.

When I was first presented with this question on my first date with Dikottir, I'd focused on the good I might do. Invest some of the money in stocks, perhaps create a fund to help out the homeless and give poverty a kick in the nuts. Or maybe I'd pour it into actual rehabilitation programs instead of the very punitive systems most governments have in place for criminals. What about youth outreach programs? Heck, affordable housing!

The list, it felt, was endless.

Especially as I'd not be beholden to the limitations governments face when they try to spend taxpayer dollars to fund a means to better society. I, a person of means, could give back to the many. There wouldn't be any need to appease a section of the community who think helping people to develop life skills is utter tripe or who think handouts simply enable bad habits.

Of course, I wouldn't need a billion dollars to pull some of these projects off. 75 million here, 100 million there...

After I'd done all the good I could possibly do in the world to make it a better place, there's still the possibility I'd have money left over.

How much I'd still have is unknown, but I think I could say with confidence that I'd probably still have enough to buy myself a Ferrari if I was so inclined. Maybe a slew of properties I'd watch grow. And live comfortably.

What if, though, I threw away all such expectations of helping the needy? If I had a billion dollars to invest into just one thing, what would it be?

Should I, perhaps, build myself a penile looking rocket to take me up into space a la Jeff Bezos? What about constructing a whole virtual world like Mark Zuckerberg?

I mean, with humanity rushing up to meet its doom - whether that be from global warming, microplastics, nuclear showdown, other hazardous chemicals we put into things supposedly to help us - who wouldn't want to escape from our current reality? I know I certainly would.

But I must admit, the technology I'd really want to invest in is something akin to what Elon Musk has dreamt up. And it's been seen in many a science fiction show or game. In fact, a version of it can be seen right now. Depending on the app of course.

I'm talking about augmented reality.

Shows tell us we would be swiping at menus and screens in mid-air. But I'd like to think we would do away with such limitations and scrolling through news articles, or, ahem, questionable fanfiction could be done with just a thought.

Imagine, if you will, the possibilities.

There you are, doing something mind-numbingly boring and repetitive at work? What if you could also be doing something else? Multi-task by watching a movie on a transparent overlay?

And why stop there?

The internet is already at our fingertips. What if you could look at something and have the information already beamed to you. That's not a random flower you see struggling to peek through the cracks in the footpath. No, that's a dandelion. If we wanted to be more technical, its scientific name is taraxacum officinale. Think of how useful having a toggleable heads up display would be!

Yes. If I had a billion dollars, I'd use it to create something akin to the Horizon: Zero Dawn focus. It's light, it's versatile and it looks pretty snazzy.

And if I have some money left over, I can pour it all into creating the ultimate space shuttle for out of space. Maybe one shaped like a questionable taco? Yes, the logistics might take some figuring out, but rocket designs are so bland that something a little creative might help our scientists stretch the other parts of their brains.

Who knows, we could have gummi ships in the future!

If I had another billion dollars, perhaps that's where I'll pour all my money into!

True, I might be pulling a Bezos and trying to escape our dying planet. But at least I'm doing it in style!

And, honestly, that's probably what matters more.

#2 Laptop

Another technology I frequently use is my laptop. Although it's used among all members of my family, I'm the one who uses it the most as evidenced by the wallpaper.

I use laptop to accomplish tasks especially academic related ones. It's a lifesaver for someone like me who finds it challenging to complete tasks solely on a smartphone due to its limited screen size. With my laptop along with a monitor by my side, I can effortlessly do multiple tasks at once, which saves me time. Furthermore, whenever we have online classes, I use this device to join meetings through Google Meet.

But my laptop isn't just for academics; it's also my 'home cinema' since our TV broke down and I can't afford to go to the local cinema. Through this device, I indulge myself in watching various shows and movies such as Grey's Anatomy, One Piece, Marry My Husband, Nana Tour, EN-O'clock, and so on via Sflix, Youtube, and Fmovies when I have free time.

Having a dual monitor setup allows me to watch shows and do tasks simultaneously, which is really beneficial for me!

#3 Earbuds

Next on the list is my precious earbuds! It comes with a cute cover featuring Pompompurin. The case was actually bought by my sister but she had to give them to me because she thought the case included the earbuds themselves. Luckily, the case fit my earbuds perfectly so she had no choice but to hand it over to me!

My earbuds are truly a lifesaver, especially during my travels to and from school. I usually endure a journey of 1 hour and 30 minutes, which involves walking, riding trains, and jeeps. Fortunately, the journey isn't as worse as it used to be because I have my favorite music blasting through my earbuds, making my commute lighter than ever.

#4 Microsoft To Do

We now proceed to my favorite software applications! Let's start with Microsoft To Do. This application is incredibly essential for me, especially as a third-year college student taking up Nursing

In Nursing, there are numerous activities and tasks that we must complete, such as return demonstrations, concept maps, NCPs, and more. With Microsoft To Do, I can organize these tasks and categorize them based on their due dates. Since I started using Microsoft To Do, I've become much more efficient in completing tasks.

What I appreciate most about this application is its accessibility—it's available on both my laptop and smartphone, and I can even use it offline. This feature is very convenient, especially on my phone, where I use it as a widget to track my progress and identify which activities are nearing their due dates.

#5 Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram

Now, these are social media applications that I mostly use!

Starting with Twitter—there isn't a time when I'm not using this application. It serves as my online newspaper, offering a huge amount of information across different categories. Whether it's local or international news, updates about my favorite K-pop boy group, exposing threads, or any entertaining content, Twitter has it all!

Next on my list are Facebook and Instagram. I use Facebook daily, especially when I want to watch random videos. My favorites include summaries of movies and shows, bakers making and designing their cakes, videos of MSA, and vlogs!

As for Instagram, I use it to post pictures and videos of myself or what happened during my day or throughout the month. Additionally, I use both applications to keep up with my friends and see what's going on in their lives. I show support for their posts by liking and commenting.

Moreover, just like Twitter, I use these platforms to get updates from my favorite celebrities, like Kim Mingyu (the gorgeous man on the right), Enhypen, Mark Lee, Jeon Wonwoo, and so on! ✩࿐࿔

college verse updates, developments, & additional headcanons

ㅤhigh school is finally done and over with and, to the surprise of many, byan has successfully graduated rather than failing and dropping out. not only that but, with the help of both lena, who has effectively become their big sister, and their boyfriend sol, they've been accepted into the fashion design program at the local community college. the program is only for an associate degree, so they'll only be studying for two years, but it gives them both time to decide if they want to continue their studies at another school afterward, as well as opportunities to get a job in the fashion industry by the end of those first two years regardless of whether they choose to pursue a bachelor's.

ㅤwith both of them starting college and officially becoming adults, and byan trying to work out housing now that they're out of the foster care system and the group home wants them out, sol suggests that they get their own place together. he has some money saved away from working throughout high school and still has a steady job, so he can afford it. although byan doesn't like the idea of him having to pay all the rent and bills on his own with everything he spent so long saving up, moving in with their boyfriend and finally having a place to call their own is a lot more appealing than sharing a dorm room with someone. so... they find an apartment together to call home.

ㅤdespite not wanting sol to be the only one supporting the both of them, byan refuses to get a typical job. they do, however, contribute whatever cash they can — usually money they've pickpocketed or otherwise stolen in some way, but occasionally what they've earned through various odd (usually criminal in some way) jobs, through selling things they've stolen, and through scamming people on dating apps. a few months into them both starting their classes, however, byan opens a shop on etsy to sell clothes and accessories they make in order to earn a bit more money. although quite niche, all the pieces they make being suited to their own fashion tastes, the shop ends up becoming fairly successful with those seeking alternative fashion and they start making decent money out of it, even taking on the odd commission for people willing to pay a little more. ㅤㅤ»ㅤsol helps them manage the shop, taking on most of the customer service for them after a few incidents where byan's communication with "ungrateful assholes" resulted in their page being reported several times. he also lends a hand in some of the packaging and mailing process.

ㅤnow that they're more interested in the content of their classes, they skip a lot less than they ever did in high school. they still blow classes off here and there, but they actually enjoy most of what they're learning so they're more encouraged to not miss any of it, especially now that they can actually implement a lot of what they learn into the things they're already making outside of assignments. while they were already pretty good at making and altering clothes, their skills only improve through their time in school and their work starts to look more and more professional.

ㅤalthough they enjoy more aspects of college than they did high school, byan still finds themself discouraged at times. they don't get along well with most of their classmates and don't like a lot of their professors. they struggle in classes that require more reading and hate the assignments that take them out of their comfort zone or require them to make something that doesn't suit their personal style. they don't handle critique of their art or work well, especially if it's particularly harsh, and this in particular results in them being tempted to quit college entirely on more than one occasion. seeing it as a reminder of why they're not suited for this type of environment, how they don't belong here, as proof that they're wasting their time, it often leads to them lashing out and falling back on the numerous bad habits they continue to maintain in order to cope.

ㅤthey also find themself struggling with a lot of aspects of adulthood. while they've been very independent through most of their life, supporting themself when no one else would, it's become a lot more difficult and a lot more stressful now that they have more responsibilities and now that there are more consequences for failing in those responsibilities. ...and a lot more consequences when they get caught breaking the law. fortunately, they have sol to help support them and keep them from spiralling as badly as they surely would were they alone. they're learning and adjusting together, and byan takes a great amount of comfort in knowing they don't have to figure things out on their own anymore.

ㅤat some point, byan ends up finding an injured stray (verging on feral) black cat and brings her home to fix her up and give her a safe place to stay while she heals. giving her the name 찌개 / jjigae (찌찌 / jjijji for short) due to her spicy personality, they soon end up simply adopting her with sol's agreement. it takes some time for her to get comfortable in the apartment and around both of them, but eventually she becomes quite affectionate. ...mostly with sol. although byan was the one to bring her home and treat her injuries, she remains much more feisty with them, resulting in them often calling her ungrateful (affectionately. mostly.) and getting in many little disputes with her.

ㅤsome time after that, sol ends up bringing home a stray he finds in the alley behind the coffee shop he works in and they adopt her as well. giving her the name 모모 / momo, she's a much more agreeable and quiet cat than jjijji and settles in much faster. fittingly, she chooses byan as her favourite, which results in them feeling less left out when jjijji practically mocks them (according to them, anyway) by stealing all of sol's attention for herself.
